Suppose G is a non-free finitely generated Kleinian group without parabolics which is not a lattice and let C(G) denote the commensurator in PSL(2,C). We prove that if the limit set of G is not a round circle, then C(G) is discrete. Furthermore, G has finite index in C(G) unless G is a fiber group in which case C(G) is a lattice.
We begin by showing that commensurators of Zariski dense subgroups of isometry groups of symmetric spaces of non-compact type are discrete provided that the limit set on the Furstenberg boundary is not invariant under the action of a (virtual) simple factor. In particular for rank one or simple Lie groups, Zariski dense subgroups with non-empty domain of discontinuity have discrete commensurators. This generalizes a Theorem of Greenberg for Kleinian groups. We then prove that for all finitely generated, Zariski dense, infinite covolume discrete subgroups of $Isom ({\mathbb{H}}^3)$, commensurat…
We say A is a quasi-normal subgroup of the group G if the commensurator of A in G is all of G. We develop geometric versions of commensurators in finitely generated groups. In particular, g is an element of the commensurator of A in G iff the Hausdorff distance between A and gA is finite. We show that a quasi-normal subgroup of a group is the kernel of a certain map, and a subgroup of a finitely generated group is quasi-normal iff the natural coset graph is locally finite. This last equivalence is particularly useful for deriving asymptotic results for finitely generated groups. Our primary go…
We show that if $π$ is the fundamental group of a 4-dimensional infrasolvmanifold then $-2\leq{def(π)}\leq0$, and give examples realizing each of these values. We also determine the abstract commensurators of such groups. Finally we show that if $G$ is a finitely generated group the kernel of the natural homomorphism from $G$ to its abstract commensurator $Comm(G)$ is locally nilpotent by locally finite, and is finite if $\mathrm{def}(G)>1$.
We prove that every finitely presentable group G arises as the fundamental group of an orientable 3-complex obtained from a hyperbolic link complement, by coning each boundary torus of the link exterior to a distinct point. We define the closed-link-genus, clg(G), of any finitely presentable group G, which completely characterizes fundamental groups of closed orientable 3-manifolds: clg(G)=0 if and only if G is the fundamental group of a closed orientable 3-manifold. Moreover clg(G) gives an upper bound for the concept `genus(G)' of genus defined earlier by Aitchison and Reeves, and in turn is…
In this paper, we obtain several results on the commensurability of two Kleinian groups and their limit sets. We prove that two finitely generated subgroups $G_1$ and $G_2$ of an infinite co-volume Kleinian group $G \subset \Isom(\mathbf{H}^3)$ having $Λ(G_1) = Λ(G_2)$ are commensurable. In particular, it is proved that any finitely generated subgroup $H$ of a Kleinian group $G \subset \Isom(\mathbf{H}^3)$ with $Λ(H) = Λ(G)$ is of finite index if and only if $H$ is not a virtually fiber subgroup.
Any action of a group $Γ$ on $\mathbb H^3$ by isometries yields a class in degree three bounded cohomology by pulling back the volume cocycle to $Γ$. We prove that the bounded cohomology of finitely generated Kleinian groups without parabolic elements distinguishes the asymptotic geometry of geometrically infinite ends of hyperbolic $3$-manifolds. That is, if two homotopy equivalent hyperbolic manifolds with infinite volume and without parabolic cusps have different geometrically infinite end invariants, then they define a $2$ dimensional subspace of bounded cohomology. Our techniques apply to…
Let $Γ$ be the fundamental group of a surface of finite type and Comm$(Γ)$ be its abstract commensurator. Then Comm$(Γ)$ contains the solvable Baumslag--Solitar groups $\langle a ,b : a b a^{-1} = b^n \rangle$ for any $n > 1$. Moreover, the Baumslag--Solitar group $\langle a ,b : a b^2 a^{-1} = b^3 \rangle$ has an image in Comm$(Γ)$ that is not residually finite. Our proofs are computer-assisted. Our results also illustrate that finitely-generated subgroups of Comm$(Γ)$ are concrete objects amenable to computational methods. For example, we give a proof that $\langle a ,b : a b^2 a^{-1} = b^3 …
This is the second part of the works on Hausdorff dimensions of Schottky groups. It has been conjectured that the Hausdorff dimensions of nonclassical Schottky groups are strictly bounded from below. In this second part of our works we provide a resolution of this conjecture, we prove that there exists a universal positive number $λ>0$, such that any finitely-generated non-elementary Kleinian groups with limit set of Hausdorff dimension $<λ$ are classical Schottky groups. We will generalize our previous technologies given in \cite{HS} to prove our general result. Our result can be consider as …
We show that Cannon-Thurston maps exist for degenerate free groups without parabolics, i.e. for handlebody groups. Combining these techniques with earlier work proving the existence of Cannon-Thurston maps for surface groups, we show that Cannon-Thurston maps exist for arbitrary finitely generated Kleinian groups without parabolics, proving conjectures of Thurston and McMullen. We also show that point pre-images under Cannon-Thurston maps for degenerate free groups without parabolics correspond to end-points of leaves of an ending lamination in the Masur domain, whenever a point has more than …
We show that up to commensurability there are only finitely many cocompact arithmetic Kleinian groups generated by rotations. This implies, in particular, that there exist only finitely many conjugacy classes of cocompact two generated arithmetic Kleinian groups. The proof of the main result is based on a generalized Gromov--Guth inequality and bounds for the hyperbolic and tube volumes of the quotient orbifolds.
We prove that the rank problem is decidable in the class of torsion-free word-hyperbolic Kleinian groups. We also show that every group in this class has only finitely many Nielsen equivalence classes of generating sets of a given cardinality.
Let $ Γ< PSL_2(\mathbb{C}) $ be a Zariski dense finitely generated Kleinian group. We show all Radon measures on $ PSL_2(\mathbb{C}) / Γ$ which are ergodic and invariant under the action of the horospherical subgroup are either supported on a single closed horospherical orbit or quasi-invariant with respect to the geodesic frame flow and its centralizer. We do this by applying a result of Landesberg and Lindenstrauss together with fundamental results in the theory of 3-manifolds, most notably the Tameness Theorem by Agol and Calegari-Gabai.
A positive integer $m$ will be called a {\it finitistic order} for an element $γ$ of a group $Γ$ if there exist a finite group $G$ and a homomorphism $h:Γ\to G$ such that $h(γ)$ has order $m$ in $G$. It is shown that up to conjugacy, all but finitely many elements of a given finitely generated, torsion-free Kleinian group admit a given integer $m>2$ as a finitistic order.
Let $G$ be a finitely generated group acting faithfully and properly discontinuously by homeomorphisms on a planar surface $X \subseteq \mathbb{S}^2$. We prove that $G$ admits such an action that is in addition co-compact, provided we can replace $X$ by another surface $Y \subseteq \mathbb{S}^2$. We also prove that if a group $H$ has a finitely generated Cayley (multi-)graph $C$ covariantly embeddable in $\mathbb{S}^2$, then $C$ can be chosen so as to have no infinite path on the boundary of a face. The proofs of these facts are intertwined, and the classes of groups they define coincide. In t…
We prove that every finitely generated Kleinian group that contains a finite, non-cyclic subgroup either is finite or virtually free or contains a surface subgroup. Hence, every arithmetic Kleinian group contains a surface subgroup.
We develop the notion of a Kleinian Sphere Packing, a generalization of "crystallographic" (Apollonian-like) sphere packings defined by Kontorovich-Nakamura [KN19]. Unlike crystallographic packings, Kleinian packings exist in all dimensions, as do "superintegral" such. We extend the Arithmeticity Theorem to Kleinian packings, that is, the superintegral ones come from Q-arithmetic lattices of simplest type. The same holds for more general objects we call Kleinian Bugs, in which the spheres need not be disjoint but can meet with dihedral angles pi/m for finitely many m. We settle two questions f…
A Kleinian group $Γ< \mathrm{Isom}(\mathbb H^3)$ is called convex cocompact if any orbit of $Γ$ in $\mathbb H^3$ is quasiconvex or, equivalently, $Γ$ acts cocompactly on the convex hull of its limit set in $\partial \mathbb H^3$. Subgroup stability is a strong quasiconvexity condition in finitely generated groups which is intrinsic to the geometry of the ambient group and generalizes the classical quasiconvexity condition above. Importantly, it coincides with quasiconvexity in hyperbolic groups and convex cocompactness in mapping class groups. Using the Morse boundary, we develop an equivalent…
We consider a finitely generated torsion free Kleinian group $H$ and a random walk on $H$ with respect to a symmetric nondegenerate probability measure $μ$ with finite support. When $H$ is geometrically infinite without parabolics or when $H$ is Gromov hyperbolic with parabolics, we prove that the Patterson-Sullivan measure is singular with respect to the harmonic measure coming from $μ$.
The density conjecture of Bers, Sullivan and Thurston predicts that each complete hyperbolic 3-manifold M with finitely generated fundamental group is an algebraic limit of geometrically finite hyperbolic 3-manifolds. We prove that the conjecture obtains for each complete hyperbolic 3-manifold with no cusps and incompressible ends.
Let $Γ$ be a non-elementary Kleinian group and $H<Γ$ a finitely generated, proper subgroup. We prove that if $Γ$ has finite co-volume, then the profinite completions of $H$ and $Γ$ are not isomorphic. If $H$ has finite index in $Γ$, then there is a finite group onto which $H$ maps but $Γ$ does not. These results streamline the existing proofs that there exist full-sized groups that are profinitely rigid in the absolute sense. They build on a circleof ideas that can be used to distinguish among the profinite completions of subgroups of finite index in other contexts, e.g. limit groups. We const…
Troels Jorgensen conjectured that the algebraic and geometric limits of an algebraically convergent sequence of isomorphic Kleinian groups agree if there are no new parabolics in the algebraic limit. We prove that this conjecture holds in 'most' cases. In particular, we show that it holds when the domain of discontinuity of the algebraic limit of such a sequence is non-empty. We further show, with the same assumptions, that the limit sets of the groups in the sequence converge to the limit set of the algebraic limit. As a corollary, we verify the conjecture for finitely generated Kleinian grou…
Thurston's Ending Lamination Conjecture states that a hyperbolic 3-manifold N with finitely generated fundamental group is uniquely determined by its topological type and its end invariants. In this paper we prove this conjecture for Kleinian surface groups; the general case when N has incompressible ends relative to its cusps follows readily. The main ingredient is the establishment of a uniformly bilipschitz model for a Kleinian surface group. The first half of the proof appeared in math.GT/0302208, and a subsequent paper will establish the Ending Lamination Conjecture in general.
In this note, we provide a description of the structure of homomorphisms from a finitely generated group to any torsion-free (3-dimensional) Kleinian group with uniformly bounded finite covolume. This is analogous to the Jorgensen-Thurston Theorem in hyperbolic geometry.
A function group is a finitely generated Kleinian group with an invariant connected component of its region of discontinuity. An extended function group is a finitely generated extended Kleinian group that contains orientation reversing elements and keep invariant a connected components of its region of discontinuity. An structural decomposition of function groups, in terms of the Klein-Maskit combination theorems, was provided by Maskit in the middle of the 70's. One should expect a similar decomposition structure for extended function groups, but it seems not to be stated in the existing lit…
Following the previous work of Nikulin and Agol, Belolipetsky, Storm, and Whyte it is known that there exist only finitely many (totally real) number fields that can serve as fields of definition of arithmetic hyperbolic reflection groups. We prove a new bound on the degree $n_k$ of these fields in dimension 3: $n_k$ does not exceed 9. Combined with previous results of Maclachlan and Nikulin, this leads to a new bound $n_k \le 25$ which is valid for all dimensions. We also obtain upper bounds for the discriminants of these fields and give some heuristic results which may be useful for the clas…
In this paper, we assume that $G$ is a finitely generated torsion free non-elementary Kleinian group with $Ω(G)$ nonempty. We show that the maximal number of elements of $G$ that can be pinched is precisely the maximal number of rank 1 parabolic subgroups that any group isomorphic to $G$ may contain. A group with this largest number of rank 1 maximal parabolic subgroups is called {\it maximally parabolic}. We show such groups exist. We state our main theorems concisely here. Theorem I. The limit set of a maximally parabolic group is a circle packing; that is, every component of its regular set…
Let P be a locally finite circle packing in the plane invariant under a non-elementary Kleinian group Gamma and with finitely many Gamma-orbits. When Gamma is geometrically finite, we construct an explicit Borel measure on the plane which describes the asymptotic distribution of small circles in P, assuming that either the critical exponent of Gamma is strictly bigger than 1 or P does not contain an infinite bouquet of tangent circles glued at a parabolic fixed point of Gamma. Our construction also works for P invariant under a geometrically infinite group Gamma, provided Gamma admits a finite…
We prove the existence of Cannon-Thurston maps for simply and doubly degenerate surface Kleinian groups. As a consequence we prove that connected limit sets of finitely generated Kleinian groups are locally connected.
We study the closed group of homeomorphisms of the boundary of real hyperbolic space generated by a cocompact Kleinian group $G_1$ and a quasiconformal conjugate $h^{-1}G_2 h$ of a cocompact group $G_2$. We show that if the conjugacy $h$ is not conformal then this group contains a non-trivial one parameter subgroup. This leads to rigidity results; for example, Mostow rigidity is an immediate consequence. We are also able to prove a relative version of Mostow rigidity, called pattern rigidity. For a cocompact group $G$, by a $G$-invariant pattern we mean a $G$-invariant collection of closed pro…
Geometrically infinite Kleinain groups have nonconical limit sets with the cardinality of the continuum. In this paper, we construct a geometrically infinite Fuchsian group such that the Hausdorff dimension of the nonconical limit set equals zero. For finitely generated, geometrically infinite Kleinian groups, we prove that the Hausdorff dimension of the nonconical limit set is positive.
Let (ρ_λ)_{λ\in Λ} be a holomorphic family of representations of a finitely generated group G into PSL(2,C), parameterized by a complex manifold Λ. We define a notion of bifurcation current in this context, that is, a positive closed current on Λdescribing the bifurcations of this family of representations in a quantitative sense. It is the analogue of the bifurcation current introduced by DeMarco for holomorphic families of rational mappings on the Riemann sphere. Our definition relies on the theory of random products of matrices, so it depends on the choice of a probability measure μon G. We…
In this paper, we classify completely hyperbolic 3-manifolds corresponding to geometric limits of Kleinian surface groups isomorphic to $π_1(S)$ for a finite-type hyperbolic surface $S$. In the first of the three main theorems, we construct bi-Lipschitz model manifolds for such hyperbolic 3-manifolds, which have a structure called brick decomposition and are embedded in $S \times (0,1)$. In the second theorem, we show that conversely, any such model manifold admitting a brick decomposition with reasonable conditions is bi-Lipschitz homeomorphic to a hyperbolic manifold corresponding to some ge…
Consider a geometrically finite Kleinian group $G$ without parabolic or elliptic elements, with its Kleinian manifold $M=(\H^3\cup Ω_G)/G$. Suppose that for each boundary component of $M$, either a maximal and connected measured lamination in the Masur domain or a marked conformal structure is given. In this setting, we shall prove that there is an algebraic limit $Γ$ of quasi-conformal deformations of $G$ such that there is a homeomorphism $h$ from $\mathrm{Int} M$ to $\H^3/Γ$ compatible with the natural isomorphism from $G$ to $Γ$, the given laminations are unrealisable in $\H^3/Γ$, and the …
Let $Γ$ be a relatively hyperbolic group and let $μ$ be an admissible symmetric finitely supported probability measure on $Γ$. We extend Floyd-Ancona type inequalities up to the spectral radius of $μ$. We then show that when the parabolic subgroups are virtually abelian, the Martin boundary of the induced random walk on $Γ$ is stable in the sense of Picardello and Woess. We also define a notion of spectral degenerescence along parabolic subgroups and give a criterion for strong stability of the Martin boundary in terms of spectral degenerescence. We prove that this criterion is always satisfie…
We show that hyperbolic 3-manifolds with finitely generated fundamental group are tame, that is the ends are products. We actually work in slightly greater generality with pinched negatively curved manifolds with hyperbolic cusps. This answers a conjecture of Marden and implies the Ahlfors measure conjecture. Applications are given to other questions about Kleinian groups and 3-manifolds.
Thurston's ending lamination conjecture proposes that a finitely generated Kleinian group is uniquely determined (up to isometry) by the topology of its quotient and a list of invariants that describe the asymptotic geometry of its ends. We present a proof of this conjecture for punctured-torus groups. These are free two-generator Kleinian groups with parabolic commutator, which should be thought of as representations of the fundamental group of a punctured torus. As a consequence we verify the conjectural topological description of the deformation space of punctured-torus groups (including Be…
Elements $f$ of finite order in the isometry group of hyperbolic three-space $\IH^3$ have a hyperbolic line as a fixed point set, this line is the axis of $f$. The possible hyperbolic distances between axes of elements of order $p$ and $q$, not both two, among {\em all} discrete subgroups $Γ$ of $Isom^+(\IH^3)$ has an initial discrete spectrum \[ 0 =δ_0< δ_1 < δ_2 < \ldots <δ_\infty,\] each value taken with finite multiplicity, and above $δ_\infty$ this spectrum of possible distances is continuous. The value $δ_\infty$ is the smallest number with the property that for each $λ<1$ there are only…
We study orbital functions associated to finitely generated geometrically infinite Kleinian groups acting on the hyperbolic space $\mathbb{H}^3$, developing a new method based on the use of the Brownian motion. On the way, we give some estimates of the orbital function associated to nilpotent covers of compact hyperbolic manifolds, partially answering a question asked by M. Pollicott to the author.
