We introduce a new approach to constructing derived deformation groupoids, by considering them as parameter spaces for strong homotopy bialgebras. This allows them to be constructed for all classical deformation problems, such as deformations of an arbitrary scheme, in any characteristic.
We develop a general deformation theory of objects in homotopy and derived categories of DG categories. The main result is a general pro-representability theorem for the corresponding deformation functor.
We generalise the techniques of arXiv:0908.1963 to describe derived deformations in simplicial categories. This allows us to consider deformation problems with higher automorphisms, such as chain complexes (which have homotopies) and stacks (which have 2-automorphisms). We also give a general approach for studying deformations of diagrams.
We describe the sheaf T^1(X) of first order deformations of a reduced scheme with normal crossing singularities. In particular, we obtain a formula for T^1(X) in a suitable log resolution of X.
We introduce a notion of Jacobi-Bernoulli cohomology associated to a semi-simplicial Lie algebra (SELA). For an algebraic scheme $X$ over $\C$, we construct a tangent SELA $\t_X$ and show that the Jacobi-Bernoulli cohomology of $\t_X$ is related to infinitesimal deformations of $X$.
We study "straight equisingular deformations", a linear subfunctor of all equisingular deformations and describe their seminuniversal deformation by an ideal containing the fixed Tjurina ideal. Moreover, we show that the base space of the seminuniversal straight equisingular deformation appears as the fibre of a morphism from the μ-constant stratum onto a punctual Hilbert scheme parametrizing certain zero-dimensional schemes concentrated in the singular point. Although equisingular deformations of plane curve singularities are very well understood, we believe that this aspect may give a new in…
We prove the standard conjectures for complex projective varieties that are deformations of the Hilbert scheme of points on a K3 surface. The proof involves Verbitsky's theory of hyperholomorphic sheaves and a study of the cohomology algebra of Hilbert schemes of K3 surfaces.
We compare deformations of algebras to deformations of schemes in the setting of invariant theory. Our results generalize comparison theorems of Schlessinger and the second author for projective schemes. We consider deformations (abstract and embedded) of a scheme $X$ which is a good quotient of a quasi-affine scheme $X^\prime$ by a linearly reductive group $G$ and compare them to invariant deformations of an affine $G$-scheme containing $X^\prime$ as an open invariant subset. The main theorems give conditions for when the comparison morphisms are smooth or isomorphisms.
We provide the main results of a deformation theory of smooth formal schemes. First we deal with the case of global lifting of smooth morphisms. We prove that the obstruction to the existence of a global lifting lies in a Ext^1 group. Then we study uniqueness and existence of lifting of smooth formal schemes. The set of isomorphism classes of smooth liftings is classified by a Ext^1 group and there exists an obstruction in a Ext^2 group whose vanishing characterizes the existence of smooth liftings.
Given a pair of derived-equivalent Calabi--Yau manifolds of dimension more than two, we prove that the derived equivalence can be extended to general fibers of versal deformations. As an application, we give a new proof of the Pfaffian--Grassmannian derived equivalence.
We study the birational geometry of deformations of Hilbert schemes of points on the projective plane P2. We complete the picture in the paper of Daniele Arcara, Aaron Bertram, Izzet Coskun and Jack Huizenga by giving an explicit correspondence between the stable base locus walls on the Neron-Severi space and the actual walls on the Bridgeland stability space. We show that the birational geometry of a deformed Hilb P2 is different from that of Hilb P2.
In this paper we study the deformation and Q-Gorenstein deformation theory of schemes with non-isolated singularities. We obtain obstruction spaces for the existence of deformations and also for local deformations to exist globally. Finally we obtain explicit criteria in order for a pure and reduced scheme of finite type over a field $k$ to have smoothings and Q-Gorenstein smoothings.
We develop a framework for derived deformation theory, valid in all characteristics. This gives a model category reconciling local and global approaches to derived moduli theory. In characteristic 0, we use this to show that the homotopy categories of DGLAs and SHLAs (L infinity algebras) considered by Kontsevich, Hinich and Manetti are equivalent, and are compatible with the derived stacks of Toen--Vezzosi and Lurie. Another application is that the cohomology groups associated to any classical deformation problem (in any characteristic) admit the same operations as Andre--Quillen cohomology.
We seek to characterize homology classes of Lagrangian projective spaces embedded in irreducible holomorphic-symplectic manifolds, up to the action of the monodromy group. This paper addresses the case of manifolds deformation-equivalent to the Hilbert scheme of length-three subschemes of a K3 surface. The class of the projective space in the cohomology ring has prescribed intersection properties, which translate into Diophantine equations. Possible homology classes correspond to integral points on an explicit elliptic curve; our proof entails showing that the only such point is two-torsion.
We realise Buchweitz and Flenner's semiregularity map (and hence a fortiori Bloch's semiregularity map) as the tangent of a morphism of derived moduli functors. An immediate consequence is that it annihilates all obstructions (not just curvilinear ones) globally. This proves Bloch's semiregularity conjecture and establishes a global reduced obstruction theory.
In this article, we study the Hilbert scheme of generically non-reduced curves in $\mathbb{P}^3$. We prove the existence of generically non-reduced curves in $\mathbb{P}^3$ for which there exist infinitesimal deformations of the curve that do not induce deformations of the associated reduced scheme. We show that such infinitesimal deformations contribute to the non-reducedness of the corresponding Hilbert scheme. We introduce the notion of extension of curves and prove that such infinitesimal deformations (such that the associated reduced scheme does not deform) are inherited by the extended c…
We analyze the deformation theory of equivariant vector bundles. In particular, we provide an effective criterion for verifying whether all infinitesimal deformations preserve the equivariant structure. As an application, using rigidity of the Frobenius homomorphism of general linear groups, we prove that projectivizations of Frobenius pullbacks of tautological vector bundles on Grassmanians are arithmetically rigid, that is, do not lift over rings where $p \neq 0$. This gives the same conclusion for Totaro's examples of Fano varieties violating Kodaira vanishing. We also provide an alternativ…
In this thesis, we study deformations of compact holomorphic Poisson manifolds and algebraic Poisson schemes in the framework of Kodaira-Spencer's analytic deformation theory and Grothendieck's algebraic deformation theory.
We study the deformation theory of projective Stanley-Reisner schemes associated to combinatorial manifolds. We achieve detailed descriptions of first order deformations and obstruction spaces. Versal base spaces are given for certain Stanley-Reisner surfaces.
We review recent results and ongoing investigations of the symplectic and Poisson geometry of derived moduli spaces, and describe applications to deformation quantization of such spaces.
We provide an overview of the Macaulay2 package VersalDeformations, which algorithmically computes versal deformations of isolated singularities, as well as local (multi)graded Hilbert schemes.
Let C be a locally planar curve. Its versal deformation admits a stratification by the genera of the fibres. The strata are singular; we show that their multiplicities at the central point are determined by the Euler numbers of the Hilbert schemes of points on C. These Euler numbers have made two prior appearances. First, in certain simple cases, they control the contribution of C to the Pandharipande-Thomas curve counting invariants of three-folds. In this context, our result identifies the strata multiplicities as the local contributions to the Gopakumar-Vafa BPS invariants. Second, when C i…
This is the second paper in a series. In part I we developed deformation theory of objects in homotopy and derived categories of DG categories. Here we extend these (derived) deformation functors to an appropriate bicategory of artinian DG algebras and prove that these extended functors are pro-representable in a strong sense.
We study equivariant deformations of singular curves with an action of a finite flat group scheme, using a simplified version of Illusie's equivariant cotangent complex. We apply these methods in a special case which is relevant for the study of the stable reduction of three point covers.
Huybrechts and Thomas recently constructed relative obstruction theory of objects of the derived category of coherent sheaves over smooth projective family. In this paper, we use this construction to obtain the absolute deformation-obstruction theory of the pair (X, E), with X smooth projective scheme and E perfect complex, and show that the obstruction theories for E, (X,E), and X fit into exact triangle as derived objects on the moduli space.
We provide a prorepresenting object for the noncommutative derived deformation problem of deforming a module $X$ over a differential graded algebra. Roughly, we show that the corresponding deformation functor is homotopy prorepresented by the dual bar construction on the derived endomorphism algebra of $X$. We specialise to the case when $X$ is one-dimensional over the base field, and introduce the notion of framed deformations, which rigidify the problem slightly and allow us to obtain derived analogues of the results of Ed Segal's thesis. Our main technical tool is Koszul duality, following …
We give a universal approach to the deformation-obstruction theory of objects of the derived category of coherent sheaves over a smooth projective family. We recover and generalise the obstruction class of Lowen and Lieblich, and prove that it is a product of Atiyah and Kodaira--Spencer classes. This allows us to obtain deformation-invariant virtual cycles on moduli spaces of objects of the derived category on threefolds.
Let X be a hyperkahler manifold deformation equivalent to a Hilbert scheme of n points on a K3 surface. We compute the graded character formula of the generic Mumford-Tate group representation on the cohomology ring of X, and derive a generating series for deducing the number of canonical Hodge classes on X. The formula indicates the number of Hodge classes on X that remain Hodge under any deformation.
We prove the following criterion for the pro-representability of the deformation cohomology of a commutative formal Lie group. Let f be a flat and separated morphism between noetherian schemes. Assume that the target of f is flat over the integers. For a commutative formal Lie group E, we have the deformation cohomology of f with coefficients in E at our disposal. If the higher direct images of the tangent space of E are locally free and of finite rank then the deformation cohomology is pro-representable by a commutative formal Lie group.
This is the first paper in a series. We develop a general deformation theory of objects in homotopy and derived categories of DG categories. Namely, for a DG module $E$ over a DG category we define four deformation functors $\Def ^{\h}(E)$, $\coDef ^{\h}(E)$, $\Def (E)$, $\coDef (E)$. The first two functors describe the deformations (and co-deformations) of $E$ in the homotopy category, and the last two - in the derived category. We study their properties and relations. These functors are defined on the category of artinian (not necessarily commutative) DG algebras.
For a Grothendieck category C which, via a Z-generating sequence (O(n))_{n in Z}, is equivalent to the category of "quasi-coherent modules" over an associated Z-algebra A, we show that under suitable cohomological conditions "taking quasi-coherent modules" defines an equivalence between linear deformations of A and abelian deformations of C. If (O(n))_{n in Z} is at the same time a geometric helix in the derived category, we show that restricting a (deformed) Z-algebra to a "thread" of objects defines a further equivalence with linear deformations of the associated matrix algebra.
For a smooth projective variety $X$ with exceptional structure sheaf, and $\operatorname{Hilb}^2X$ the Hilbert scheme of two points on $X$, we show that the Fourier-Mukai functor $\mathbf{D}^{\mathrm{b}}(X) \to\mathbf{D}^{\mathrm{b}}(\operatorname{Hilb}^2X)$ induced by the universal ideal sheaf is fully faithful, provided the dimension of $X$ is at least 2. This fully faithfulness allows us to construct a spectral sequence relating the deformation theories of $X$ and $\operatorname{Hilb}^2X$ and to show that it degenerates at the second page, giving a Hochschild-Kostant-Rosenberg-type filtrati…
We show that the classification of simple finite group schemes over an algebraically closed field reduces to the classification of abstract simple finite groups and of simple restricted Lie algebras in positive characteristic. Both these two simple objects have been classified. We review this classification. Finally, we address the problem of determining the infinitesimal deformations of simple finite group schemes.
We study first order deformations of the tangent sheaf of resolutions of Calabi-Yau threefolds that are of the form $\mathbb{C}^3/Z_r$, focusing on the cases where the orbifold has an isolated singularity. We prove a lower bound on the number of deformations for any crepant resolution of this orbifold. We show that this lower bound is achieved when the resolution used is the G-Hilbert scheme, and note that this lower bound can be found using methods from string theory. These methods lead us to a new way to construct the G-Hilbert scheme using the singlet count.
This is a report on recent progress concerning the interactions between derived algebraic geometry and deformation quantization. We present the notion of derived algebraic stacks, of shifted symplectic and Poisson structures, as well as the construction of deformation quantization of shifted Poisson structures. As an application we propose a general construction of the quantization of the moduli space of $G$-bundles on an oriented space of arbitrary dimension.
In this paper we produce noncommutative algebras derived equivalent to deformations of schemes with tilting bundles. We do this in two settings, first proving that a tilting bundle on a scheme lifts to a tilting bundle on an infinitesimal deformations of that scheme and then expanding this result to $\mathbb{C}^*$-equivariant deformations over schemes with a good $\mathbb{C}^*$-action. In both these situations the endomorphism algebra of the lifted tilting bundle produces a deformation of the original endomorphism algebra, and this is a graded deformation in the $\mathbb{C}^*$-equivariant case…
This is the third paper in a series. In part I we developed a deformation theory of objects in homotopy and derived categories of DG categories. Here we show how this theory can be used to study deformations of objects in homotopy and derived categories of abelian categories. Then we consider examples from (noncommutative) algebraic geometry. In particular, we study noncommutative Grassmanians that are true noncommutative moduli spaces of structure sheaves of projective subspaces in projective spaces.
Let $X$ be a Noetherian separated and finite dimensional scheme over a field $\mathbb{K}$ of characteristic zero. The goal of this paper is to study deformations of $X$ over a differential graded local Artin $\mathbb{K}$-algebra by using local Tate-Quillen resolutions, i.e., the algebraic analog of the Palamodov's resolvent of a complex space. The above goal is achieved by describing the DG-Lie algebra controlling deformation theory of a diagram of differential graded commutative algebras, indexed by a direct Reedy category.
Let X be a complex algebraic variety, and L(X) be the scheme of formal arcs in X. Let f be an arc whose image is not contained in the singularities of X. We show that the formal neighborhood of f in L(X) admits a decomposition into a product of an infinite-dimensional smooth piece, and a piece isomorphic to the formal neighborhood of a closed point of a scheme of finite type.
We show that on an Abelian variety over an algebraically closed field of positive characteristic, the obstruction to lifting an automorphism to an Abelian variety over a field of characteristic zero as a morphism vanishes if and only if it vanishes for lifting it as an autoequivalence. We also compare the deformation space of these two types of deformations.
We show that Braun-Chuang-Lazarev's derived quotient prorepresents a naturally defined noncommutative derived deformation functor. Given a noncommutative partial resolution of a Gorenstein algebra, we show that the associated derived quotient controls part of its dg singularity category. We use a recent result of Hua and Keller to prove a recovery theorem, which can be thought of as providing a solution to a derived enhancement of a conjecture made by Donovan and Wemyss about the birational geometry of threefold flops.
We study the deformation theory of a Fano variety X with normal crossing singularities of dimension at most three. We obtain a formula for the sheaf T^1(X) of first order deformations of X in a suitable log resolution of X and its singular locus Z and we obtain explicit criteria for the existence of smoothings of X.
We say that an exact equivalence between the derived categories of two algebraic varieties is tilting-type if it is constructed by using tilting bundles. The aim of this article is to understand the behavior of tilting-type equivalences for crepant resolutions under deformations. As an application of the method that we establish in this article, we study the derived equivalence for stratified Mukai flops and stratified Atiyah flops in terms of tilting bundles.
The projective coordinate ring of a projective Poisson scheme $X$ does not usually admit a structure of a Poisson algebra. We show that when $H^1(X,O_X)=H^2(X,O_X)=0$, this can be corrected by embedding $X$ into a canonical one-parameter deformation. The scheme $X$ then becomes the Hamiltonian reduction of the spectrum of the deformed projective coordinate ring with respect to $G_m$. The projection into the base of the deformation is the moment map.
