The discovery of high-transition temperature (high-Tc) superconductivity near antiferromagnetism in iron arsenides raised the possibility of an unconventional superconducting mechansim1-8. The observation of clear Fermi surfaces and nodeless superconducting gaps by angle resolved photoemission9-12 suggests that electron pairing in these materials may be mediated by quasiparticle excitations between sign reversed hole and electron Fermi pockets5-8. Although the presence of a 'resonance' in the spin excitation spectrum found by inelastic neutron scattering13-17 is consistent with this picture18-20, there has been no direct evidence connecting the resonance to the superconducting gap energy. Here we show that for the optimally electron doped BaFe1.9Ni0.1As2 (Tc =20 K, Fig. 1c) iron arsenide superconductor, application of a magnetic field that suppresses the superconductivity and superconducting gap energy also reduces the intensity and energy of the resonance. These results suggest that the energy of the resonance is proportional to the electron pairing energy, and thus indicate that spin fluctuations are intimately related to the mechanism of superconductivity in iron arsenides.
We show that the recently observed spin resonance modes in heavy-fermion superconductors CeCoIn$_5$ and CeCu$_2$Si$_2$ are magnetic excitons originating from superconducting quasiparticles. The wave vector ${\bf Q}$ of the resonance state leads to a powerful criterion for the symmetry and node positions of the unconventional gap function. The detailed analysis of the superconducting feedback on magnetic excitations reveals that the symmetry of the superconducting gap corresponds to a singlet $d_{x^2-y^2}$ state symmetry in both compounds. In particular this resolves the long-standing ambiguity…
Unconventional superconductors such as the high-transition temperature cuprates, heavy-fermion systems and iron arsenide-based compounds exhibit antiferromagnetic fluctuations that are dominated by a resonance, a collective spin-one excitation mode in the superconducting state. Here we demonstrate the existence of a universal linear relation, $Er \propto 2Δ$, between the magnetic resonance energy (Er) and the superconducting pairing gap ($Δ$), spanning two orders of magnitude in energy. This relation is valid for materials that range from being close to the Mott-insulating limit to being on th…
We use inelastic neutron scattering to study magnetic excitations of the FeAs-based superconductor BaFe$_{1.9}$Ni$_{0.1}$As$_2$ above and below its superconducting transition temperature $T_c=20$ K. In addition to gradually open a spin gap at the in-plane antiferromagnetic ordering wavevector $(1,0,0)$, the effect of superconductivity is to form a three dimensional resonance with clear dispersion along the c-axis direction. The intensity of the resonance develops like a superconducting order parameter, and the mode occurs at distinctively different energies at $(1,0,0)$ and $(1,0,1)$. If the r…
The magnetic excitations in the superconducting electron-doped cuprates are studied in the framework of spin-density-wave description. The superconducting resonance is a natural product of the superconductivity due to the opening of d-wave gap. Its resonance energy exhibits well linear scaling with superconducting gap as $E_{res}/2Δ\sim 0.6$, quantitatively consisting with the experimental discovery. This ratio is insensitive to the selected parameters, manifesting its universality. Another lower-energy peak below resonance energy is predicted when the hole pocket emerges due to suppression of…
Inelastic neutron scattering has been used to determine the dynamic spin fluctuations in an underdoped high temperature superconductor YBCO_{6.8} single crystal. The magnetic resonance, that occurs around 40 meV in overdoped samples, is shifted to a lower energy, E_r= 34 meV. A constant ratio, $E_r/ k_B T_C= 4.9 \pm 0.2$, almost independent of the doping level, is found. According to numerous theoretical approaches, this finding supports the idea that the resonance energy is proportional (approximately twice) to the superconducting gap.
We report a systematic study by 75As nuclear-quadrupole resonance in LaFeAsO1-xFx. The antiferromagnetic spin fluctuation (AFSF) found above the magnetic ordering temperature TN = 58 K for x = 0.03 persists in the regime 0.04 < x < 0.08 where superconductivity sets in. A dome-shaped x-dependence of the superconducting transition temperature Tc is found, with the highest Tc = 27 K at x = 0.06 which is realized under significant AFSF. With increasing x further, the AFSF decreases, and so does Tc. These features resemble closely the cuprates La2-xSrxCuO4. In x = 0.06, the spin-lattice relaxation …
We use neutron scattering to study magnetic excitations near the antiferromagnetic wave vector in the underdoped single-layer cuprate HgBa2CuO4+δ (superconducting transition temperature Tc ~ 88 K, pseudogap temperature T* ~ 220 K). The response is distinctly enhanced below T* and exhibits a Y-shaped dispersion in the pseudogap state, whereas the superconducting state features an X-shaped (hourglass) dispersion and a further resonance-like enhancement. A large spin gap of about 40 meV is observed in both states. This phenomenology is reminiscent of that exhibited by bilayer cuprates. The resona…
We show that the fluctuations associated with ferro orbital order in the $d_{xz}$ and $d_{yz}$ orbitals can develop a sharp resonance mode in the superconducting state with a nodeless gap on the Fermi surface. This orbital resonance mode appears below the particle-hole continuum and is analogous to the magnetic resonance mode found in various unconventional superconductors. If the pairing symmetry is $s_{\pm}$, a dynamical coupling between the orbital ordering and the d-wave subdominant pairing channels is present by symmetry. Therefore the nature of the resonance mode depends on the relative …
We report 59Co nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) studies of bilayer water intercalated sodium cobalt oxides NaxCoO2.yH2O (BLH) with the superconducting transition temperatures, 2 K < T_c <= 4.6 K, as well as a magnetic BLH sample without superconductivity. We obtained a magnetic phase diagram of T_c and the magnetic ordering temperature T_M against the peak frequency nu_3 59Co NQR transition I_z = +- 5/2 <=> +-7/2 and found a dome shape superconducting phase. The 59Co NQR spectrum of the non-superconducting BLH shows a broadening below T_M without the critical divergence of 1/T_1 and 1/T_2, s…
We performed $^{185/187}$Re nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) measurements under pressure to investigate the superconducting properties of noncentrosymmetric superconductor Cd$_{2}$Re$_{2}$O$_{7}$ under various crystal structures. The pressure dependence of superconducting transition temperature $T_{\rm c}$ determined through ac susceptibility measurements is consistent with the results of previous resistivity measurements [T. C. Kobayashi $et al$., J. Phys. Soc. Jpn. 80, 023715 (2011).]. Below 2.2 GPa, in the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate $1/T_{1}$, a clear coherence peak was observed…
The existence of a neutron scattering resonance at a wavevector q* implies a sign change of the gap between two Fermi surface regions separated by wavevector q* . For the Fe pnictides, a resonance has been observed for a wavevector q* which connects a hole Fermi surface around the $Γ$ point with an electron Fermi surface around the X or Y points of the 1 Fe/unit cell Brillouin zone. Here we study the neutron scattering resonance for a five orbital model within an RPA-BCS approximation. Our results show that both sign-switched and extended s-wave gaps are consistent with the present data for q*…
Based on the slave-boson theory of the two-dimensional $t-t'-J$ model, we calculate the superconducting condensation energy for optimally doped and overdoped high $T_{c}$ cuprates at finite temperatures using a renormalized random phase approximation. The contributions come from the mean-field part and the antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations. In the presence of neutron resonance peak at $(π,π)$, the latter is shown to have similar temperature and doping dependences as the difference in antiferromagnetic (AF) exchange energy between the normal and the superconducting state. This difference has …
We study the orbital-dependent superconducting pairing in a five-orbital t-J1-J2 model for iron pnictides. Depending on the orbital selectivity of electron correlations and the orbital characters along the Fermi surface, the superconducting gap in an A_{1g} pairing state may exhibit anisotropy. This anisotropy varies with the degree of J1-J2 magnetic frustration. We have also calculated the dynamical spin susceptibility in the superconducting state. The frequency dependence of the susceptibility at the antiferromagnetic wavevector (π,0) shows a resonance, whose width is enhanced by the orbital…
The spin dynamics of high temperature superconductors measured by inelastic neutron scattering is reviewed. The spin susceptibility evolves a lot with increasing doping from the undoped insulating state to the overdoped metallic state. In the superconducting state, a strong magnetic resonance peak occurs in the spin excitation spectrum whose energy is proportional to the superconducting temperature. In underdoped and optimally doped regimes, normal state antiferromagnetic fluctuations are observed, proving the existence of strong electronic correlations in cuprates. They are characterized by a…
Thermal conductivity measurements in the superconducting state of the ferromagnet UCoGe were performed at very low temperatures and under magnetic field on samples of different qualities and with the heat current along the three crystallographic axis. This allows to disentangle intrinsic and extrinsic effects, confirm the situation of multigap superconductivity and shed new light on the situation expected or claimed for the gap in these ferromagnetic superconductors, like evidences of absence of "partially gapped" Fermi surfaces.
Inelastic neutron scattering measurements have been performed on underdoped Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2 (x = 4.7%) where superconductivity and long-range antiferromagnetic (AFM) order coexist. The broad magnetic spectrum found in the normal state develops into a magnetic resonance feature below TC that has appreciable dispersion along c-axis with a bandwidth of 3-4 meV. This is in contrast to the optimally doped x = 8.0% composition, with no long-range AFM order, where the resonance exhibits a much weaker dispersion [see Lumsden et al. Phys. Rev. Lett. 102, 107005 (2009)]. The results suggest that the re…
The thermal conductivity of organic superconductor kappa-(BEDT-TTF)2Cu(NCS)2 (Tc =10.4 K) has been studied in a magnetic field rotating within the 2D superconducting planes with high alignment precision. At low temperatures (T < 0.5 K), a clear fourfold symmetry in the angular variation, which is characteristic of a d-wave superconducting gap with nodes along the directions rotated 45 degrees relative to the b and c axes of the crystal, was resolved. The determined nodal structure is inconsistent with recent theoretical predictions of superconductivity induced by the antiferromagnetic spin flu…
We present a ^{115}In NMR study of the quasi two-dimensional heavy-fermion superconductor CeCoIn_5 believed to host a Fulde-Ferrel-Larkin-Ovchinnkov (FFLO) state. In the vicinity of the upper critical field and with a magnetic field applied parallel to the ab-plane, the NMR spectrum exhibits a dramatic change below T*(H) which well coincides with the position of reported anomalies in specific heat and ultrasound velocity. We argue that our results provide the first microscopic evidence for the occurrence of a spatially modulated superconducting order parameter expected in a FFLO state. The NMR…
Studying the nodal quasiparticles in superconducting cuprates by photoemission with highly improved momentum resolution, we show that a new "kink" feature in the scattering rate is a key to uncover the nature of electron correlations in these compounds. Our data provide evidence that the main doping independent contribution to the scattering can be well understood in terms of the conventional Fermi liquid model, while the additional doping dependent contribution has a magnetic origin. This sheds doubt on applicability of a phonon-mediated pairing mechanism to high temperature superconductors.
In several families of iron-based superconducting materials, a d-wave pairing instability may compete with the leading s-wave instability. Here we show that when both states have comparable free energies, superconducting and nematic degrees of freedom are strongly coupled. While nematic order causes a sharp non-analytic increase in $T_{c}$, nematic fluctuations can change the character of the s-wave to d-wave transition, favoring an intermediate state that does not break time-reversal symmetry but does break tetragonal symmetry. The coupling between superconductivity and nematicity is also man…
Polarized and unpolarized neutron triple-axis spectrometry was used to study the dynamical magnetic susceptibility $χ^{\prime\prime}({\bf q},ω)$ as a function of energy ($\hbarω$) and wave vector (${\bf q}$) in a wide temperature range for the bilayer superconductor YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+x}$ with oxygen concentrations, $x$, of 0.45, 0.5, 0.6, 0.7, 0.8, 0.93, and 0.95. The most prominent features in the magnetic spectra include a spin gap in the superconducting state, a pseudogap in the normal state, the much-discussed resonance, and incommensurate spin fluctuations below the resonance. We establi…
We investigate the effect of magnetic impurities on the local quasiparticle density of states (LDOS) in iron-based superconductors. Employing the two-orbital model where 3$d$ electron and hole conduction bands are hybridizing with the localized $f$-orbital of the impurity spin, we investigate how various symmetries of the superconducting gap and its nodal structure influence the quasiparticle excitations and impurity bound states. We show that the bound states behave qualitatively different for each symmetry. Most importantly we find that the impurity-induced bound states can be used to identi…
We use transport and neutron scattering to study the electronic phase diagram and spin excitations of NaFe$_{1-x}$Cu$_x$As single crystals. Similar to Co- and Ni-doped NaFeAs, a bulk superconducting phase appears near $x\approx2\%$ with the suppression of stripe-type magnetic order in NaFeAs. Upon further increasing Cu concentration the system becomes insulating, culminating in an antiferromagnetically ordered insulating phase near $x\approx 50\%$. Using transport measurements, we demonstrate that the resistivity in NaFe$_{1-x}$Cu$_x$As exhibits non-Fermi-liquid behavior near $x\approx1.8\%$. …
Fast resonance frequency modulation of a superconducting stripline resonator is investigated. The experiments are performed using a novel device which integrates a hot electron detector (HED) into a superconducting stripline ring resonator. Frequency modulation is demonstrated by both applying dc current or voltage to the HED, and by applying optical illumination, with modulation frequencies of up to 4.2GHz. Potential applications for such a device are in telecommunication, quantum cryptography and biofluorescence.
Pressure-induced superconductivity was recently discovered in the binary helimagnet CrAs. We report the results of measurements of nuclear quadrupole resonance for CrAs under pressure. In the vicinity of the critical pressure P_c between the helimagnetic (HM) and paramagnetic (PM) phases, a phase separation is observed. The large internal field remaining in the phase-separated HM state indicates that the HM phase disappears through a strong first-order transition. This indicates the absence of a quantum critical point in CrAs; however, the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T_1 reveals tha…
We study the crossover in a zero temperature superconducting nanofilm from a single to a double superconducting slab induced by a tunable insulating potential barrier in the middle. The single phase superconducting ground state of this heterostructure is shown to be intrinsically multigapped and to have a new type of resonance caused by the strength of the barrier, thus distinct from the Thompson-Blatt shape resonance which is caused by tuning the thickness of the film. Single particle electronic states are strongly or weakly affected according to their parity (even or odd) with respect to the…
We have investigated the phase dynamics and IV-characteristics of shunted Josephson junctions coupled to an $LC$ circuit. When the Josephson frequency $ω_J$ is close to the eigen frequency $ω_{rc}$ of the coupled resonance circuit, the IV-characteristic demonstrates an additional $rc$-branch. We have investigated the features of the $rc$-branch and of the superconducting current component for different values of the resonance frequency. It has been found that the maximal value of the superconducting current depends on the resonance frequency and that it increases when the end point of the $rc$…
We use polarized neutron scattering to demonstrate that in-plane spin excitations in electron doped superconducting BaFe1.904Ni0.096As2 (Tc=19.8 K) change from isotropic to anisotropic in the tetragonal phase well above the antiferromagnetic (AF) ordering and tetragonal-to-orthorhombic lattice distortion temperatures (Tn=Ts=33 K) without an uniaxial pressure. While the anisotropic spin excitations are not sensitive to the AF order and tetragonal-to-orthorhombic lattice distortion, superconductivity induces further anisotropy for spin excitations along the [1,1,0] and [1,-1,0] directions. These…
We report $^{75}$As nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) studies on superconducting oxypnictide LaFeAsO$_{0.92}$F$_{0.08}$ ($T_{\rm c}$ = 23 K). The temperature dependence of the spin lattice relaxation rate (1/$T_1$) decreases below $T_{\rm c}$ without a coherence (Hebel-Slichter) peak and shows a temperature dependence that is not simple power-law nor exponential. We show that the result can be understood in terms of two superconducting gaps of either $d$- or ${\pm}s$-wave symmetry, with the larger gap $Δ_1\sim 4 k_{\rm B}T_{\rm c}$ and the smaller one $Δ_2 \sim 1.5 k_{\rm B}T_{\rm c}$. Our re…
X-band electron paramagnetic resonance on doped Er3+ and Yb3+ ions in Y0.99(Yb,Er)0.01Ba2Cu3OX compounds with different oxygen contents in the wide temperature range (4-120)K have been made. In the superconducting species, the strong dependencies of the linewidth and resonance line position from the sweep direction of the applied magnetic field are revealed at the temperatures significantly below TC. The possible origins of the observed hysteresis are analyzed. Applicability of the presented EPR approach to extract information about the dynamics of the flux-line lattice and critical state para…
The so-called neutron spin resonance consists of a prominent enhancement of the magnetic response at a particular energy and momentum transfer upon entering the superconducting state of unconventional superconductors. In the case of iron-based superconductors, the neutron resonance has been extensively studied experimentally, and a peculiar spin-space anisotropy has been identified by polarized inelastic neutron scattering experiments. Here we perform a theoretical study of the energy- and spin-resolved magnetic susceptibility in the superconducting state with $ s_{+-} $-wave order parameter, …
We use inelastic neutron scattering to show that superconductivity in electron-underdoped NaFe0.985Co0.015As induces a dispersive sharp resonance near Er1 = 3:25 meV and a broad dis- persionless mode at Er2 = 6 meV. However, similar measurements on overdoped superconducting NaFe0:955Co0:045As find only a single sharp resonance at Er = 7 meV. We connect these results with the observations of angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy that the superconducting gaps in the electron Fermi pockets are anisotropic in the underdoped material but become isotropic in the overdoped case. Our analysis indi…
We have performed $^{63}$Cu nuclear magnetic resonance/nuclear quadrupole resonance measurements to investigate the magnetic and superconducting (SC) properties on a "superconductivity dominant" ($S$-type) single crystal of CeCu$_2$Si$_2$. Although the development of antiferromagnetic (AFM) fluctuations down to 1~K indicated that the AFM criticality was close, Korringa behavior was observed below 0.8~K, and no magnetic anomaly was observed above $T_{\rm c} \sim$ 0.6 K. These behaviors were expected in $S$-type CeCu$_2$Si$_2$. The temperature dependence of the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation ra…
We report a $^{73}$Ge nuclear-quadrupole-resonance (NQR) study on novel evolution of unconventional superconductivity in antiferromagnetic (AFM) CeNiGe$_3$. The measurements of the $^{73}$Ge-NQR spectrum and the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate ($1/T_1$) have revealed that the unconventional superconductivity evolves inside a commensurate AFM phase around the pressure ($P$) where Néel temperature $T_{\rm N}$ exhibits its maximum at 8.5 K. The superconducting transition temperature $T_{\rm SC}$ has been found to be enhanced with increasing $T_{\rm N}$, before reaching the quantum critical p…
The superconducting gap structure of heavy fermion UPd_2Al_3, in which unconventional superconductivity coexists with antiferromagnetic (AF) order with atomic size local moments, was investigated by the thermal conductivity measurements in a magnetic field rotating in various directions relative to the crystal axes. The results provide strong evidence that the gap function Δ(k) has a single line node orthogonal to the c-axis located at the AF Brillouin zone boundary, while Δ(k) is isotropic within the basal plane. The determined nodal structure is compatible with the resonance peak in the dyna…
Spin resonance in the superconducting state of Fe-based materials within the multiorbital model with unequal anisotropic gaps on different Fermi surface sheets is studied. On the basis of the model gap function and the one calculated within the spin fluctuation theory of pairing, I show that the resonance peak shifts to higher frequencies with increasing the zero-amplitude gap magnitude. On the contrary, with increasing the gap anisotropy, it shifts to lower frequencies and lose some intensity.
The in-plane thermal conductivity $κ$ of electron-doped iron-arsenide superconductor BaFe$_{1.9}$Ni$_{0.1}$As$_2$ ($T_c$ = 20.3 K) single crystal was measured down to 70 mK. In zero field, the absence of a residual linear term $κ_0/T$ at $ T \to 0$ is strong evidence for nodeless superconducting gap. In magnetic field, $κ_0/T$ shows a slow field dependence up to $H$ = 14.5 T ($\approx$ 30% $H_{c_2}$). This is consistent with the superconducting gap structure demonstrated by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy experiments in BaFe$_{1.85}$Co$_{0.15}$As$_2$ ($T_c$ = 25.5 K), where isotropic…
We propose a method for switchable coupling between superconducting qubits using double resonance. The inter-qubit coupling is achieved by applying near-resonant oscillating fields to the two qubits. The deviation from resonance relaxes the criterion of strong driving fields while still allowing for a fully entangling two-qubit gate. This method avoids some of the shortcomings of previous proposals for switchable coupling. We discuss the possible application of our proposal to a pair of inductively coupled flux qubits, and we consider the extension to phase qubits.
Inelastic neutron scattering provides a probe for studying the spin and momentum structure of the superconducting gap. Here, using a two-orbital model for the Fe-pnicitide superconductors and an RPA-BCS approximation for the dynamic spin susceptibility, we explore the scattering response for various gaps that have been proposed.
Motivated by the recent discovery of noncentrosymmetric superconductors, such as $CePt_{3}Si$, $CeRhSi_{3}$ and $CeIrSi_{3}$, we investigate theoretically the impurity resonance states with coexisting $s$- and p-wave pairing symmetries. Due to the nodal structure of the gap function, we find single nonmagnetic impurity-induced resonances appearing in the local density of state (LDOS). In particular, we analyze the evolution of the local density of states for coexisting isotropic s-wave and p-wave superconducting states and compare with that of anisotropic s-wave and p-wave symmetries of the su…
In this paper we derive the environmental spectral density for flux, phase and charge qubits when each of them is coupled to an environment with a resonance. From the spectral density we obtain the characteristic spontaneous emission (relaxation) lifetimes $T_1$ for each of these qubits, and show that there is a substantial enhancement of $T_1$ beyond the resonant frequency of the environment.
We use inelastic neutron scattering to study the temperature dependence of the low-energy spin excitations in single crystals of superconducting FeTe$_{0.6}$Se$_{0.4}$ ($T_c=14$ K). In the low-temperature superconducting state, the imaginary part of the dynamic susceptibility at the electron and hole Fermi surfaces nesting wave vector $Q=(0.5,0.5)$, $χ^{\prime\prime}(Q,ω)$, has a small spin gap, a two-dimensional neutron spin resonance above the spin gap, and increases linearly with increasing $\hbarω$ for energies above the resonance. While the intensity of the resonance decreases like an ord…
We use polarized inelastic neutron scattering to show that the neutron spin resonance below $T_c$ in superconducting BaFe$_{1.9}$Ni$_{0.1}$As$_2$ ($T_c=20$ K) is purely magnetic in origin. Our analysis further reveals that the resonance peak near 7~meV only occurs for the planar response. This challenges the common perception that the spin resonance in the pnictides is an isotropic triplet excited state of the singlet Cooper pairs, as our results imply that only the $S_{001}=\pm1$ components of the triplet are involved.
We have used polarized-neutron inelastic scattering to resolve the spin fluctuations in superconducting FeSe0.5Te0.5 into components parallel and perpendicular to the layers. A spin resonance at an energy of 6.5 meV is observed to develop below T_c in both fluctuation components. The resonance peak is anisotropic, with the in-plane component slightly larger than the out-of-plane component. Away from the resonance peak the magnetic fluctuations are isotropic in the energy range studied. The results are consistent with a dominant singlet pairing state with s^{\pm} symmetry, with a possible minor…
We use neutron spectroscopy to determine the nature of the magnetic excitations in superconducting BaFe$_{1.9}$Ni$_{0.1}$As$_{2}$ ($T_{c}=20$ K). Above $T_{c}$ the excitations are gapless and centered at the commensurate antiferromagnetic wave vector of the parent compound, while the intensity exhibits a sinusoidal modulation along the c-axis. As the superconducting state is entered a spin gap gradually opens, whose magnitude tracks the $T$-dependence of the superconducting gap observed by angle resolved photoemission. Both the spin gap and magnetic resonance energies are temperature \textit{a…
In this paper we report some extraordinary nonlinear dynamics measured in the resonance curve of NbN superconducting stripline microwave resonators. Among the nonlinearities observed: aburpt bifurcations in the resonance response at relatively low input powers, asymmetric resonances, multiple jumps within the resonance band, resonance frequency drift, frequency hysteresis, hysteresis loops changing direction and critical coupling phenomenon. Weak links in the NbN grain structure are hypothesized as the source of the nonlinearities.
We demonstrate a millimeter-wave range metamaterial fabricated from cuprate superconductor. Two complementary metamaterial structures have been studied, which exhibit Fano resonances emerging from the collective excitation of interacting magnetic and electric dipole modes.
Controlling lattice complexity or inhomogeneity of the doped oxide superconductors is shown to be a key term for control of the superconductivity critical temperature. All high temperature superconductors show anisotropic gaps and/or multi-gap superconductivity in the clean limit. They show the shape resonance in superconducting gaps that is a type of Fano resonance driven by the Josephson-like term for pairs transfer. These resonances occur where one of the multiple Fermi surface spots is near a 2.5 Lifshitz transition. The Fano antiresonance occurs between a BCS condensate and a BEC-like con…
Theory of self induced resonances in asymmetric two-junction interferometer device is presented. In real devices it is impossible to have an ideal interferometer free of imperfections. Thus, we extended previous theoretical approaches introducing a model which contains several asymmetries: Josephson current $ε$, capacitances $χ$ and dissipation $ρ$ presented in an equivalent circuit. Moreover, non conventional symmetry of the order parameter in high temperature superconducting quantum interference devices forced us to include phase asymmetries. Therefore, the model has been extended to the cas…
Motivated by neutron scattering data, we develop a model of electrons interacting with a magnetic resonance and use it to analyze angle resolved photoemission (ARPES) and tunneling data in the superconducting state of Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_{8+d}. We not only can explain the peak-dip-hump structure observed near the (pi,0) point, and its particle-hole asymmetry as seen in SIN tunneling spectra, but also its evolution throughout the Brillouin zone, including a velocity `kink' near the d-wave node.
We study the shape resonance effect associated with the confined transverse superconducting modes of a cylindrical nanowire in the clean limit. Results of numerical investigations of the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations show significant deviations of the energy gap parameter from its bulk value with a profound effect on the transition temperature. The most striking is that the size of the resonances is found to be by about order of magnitude larger than in ultrathin metallic films with the same width.
In this Letter we present resonance properties in terahertz metamaterials consisting of a split-ring resonator array made from high temperature superconducting films. By varying the temperature, we observed efficient metamaterial resonance switching and frequency tuning with some features not revealed before. The results were well reproduced by numerical simulations of metamaterial resonance using the experimentally measured complex conductivity of the superconducting film. We developed a theoretical model that explains the tuning features, which takes into account the resistive resonance damp…
In this work we report on unusual nonlinear dynamics measured in the resonance response of NbN superconducting microwave resonators. The nonlinear dynamics, occurring at relatively low input powers (2-4 orders of magnitude lower than Nb), and which include among others, jumps in the resonance lineshape, hysteresis loops changing direction and resonance frequency shift, are measured herein using varying input power, applied magnetic field, white noise and rapid frequency sweeps. Based on these measurement results, we consider a hypothesis according to which local heating of weak links forming a…
In amorphous superconducting thin films of $Nb_{0.15}Si_{0.85}$ and $InO_x$, a finite Nernst coefficient can be detected in a wide range of temperature and magnetic field. Due to the negligible contribution of normal quasi-particles, superconducting fluctuations easily dominate the Nernst response in the entire range of study. In the vicinity of the critical temperature and in the zero-field limit, the magnitude of the signal is in quantitative agreement with what is theoretically expected for the Gaussian fluctuations of the superconducting order parameter. Even at higher temperatures and fin…
Peaks associated to multiple Andreev reflections have been used to identify the number of conduction channels, and their transmitivity in mesoscopic superconducting junctions. We analyze the influence of the detailed shape of each channel, and the number of weak links within it, on the final results. Connexions with the statistical interpretation of conductance histograms is also made.
The pairing temperature of superconducting thin films is expected to display, within the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer theory, oscillations as a function of the film thickness. We show that the pattern of these oscillations switches between two different periodicities at a density-dependent value of the superconducting coupling. The transition is most abrupt in the anti-adiabatic regime, where the Fermi energy is less than the Debye energy. To support our numerical data, we provide new analytical expressions for the chemical potential and the pairing temperature as a function of thickness, which o…
The LaIn3-xSnx alloy system is composed of superconducting Pauli paramagnets. For LaIn3 the superconducting critical temperature T_c is approximately 0.7 K and it shows an oscillatory dependence as a function of Sn substitution, presenting its highest value T_c ~ 6.4 K for the LaSn3 end member. The superconducting state of these materials was characterized as being of the conventional type. We report our results for Gd3+ electron spin resonance (ESR) measurements in the LaIn3-xSnx compounds as a function of x. We show that the effective exchange interaction parameter J_fs between the Gd3+ 4f l…
We exploit nonlinearity in NbN superconducting stripline resonators, which is originated by local thermal instability, for studying stochastic resonance. As the resonators are driven into instability, small amplitude modulated (AM) microwave signals are amplified with the aid of injected white noise. The dependence of the signal amplification on the modulation amplitude and the modulation frequency is examined and compared with theory.
We use polarized inelastic neutron scattering (INS) to study spin excitations in superconducting NaFe0.985Co0.015As (C15) with static antiferromagnetic (AF) order along the a-axis of the orthorhombic structure and NaFe0.935Co0.045As (C45) without AF order. In previous unpolarized INS work, spin excitations in C15 were found to have a dispersive sharp resonance near Er1=3.25 meV and a broad dispersionless mode at Er2=6 meV. Our neutron polarization analysis reveals that the dispersive resonance in C15 is highly anisotropic and polarized along the a- and c-axis, while the dispersionless mode is …
