AIMS: The main goal of this work is to study possible signs of asymmetry in the bright optical transient in NGC300, with the aim of getting independent information on the explosion mechanism, the progenitor star and its circumstellar environment.
METHODS: Using VLT-FORS1 we have obtained low-resolution optical linear spectropolarimetry of NGC300 OT2008-1 on two epochs, 48 and 55 days after the discovery, covering the spectral range 3600--9330A.
RESULTS: The data show a continuum polarization at a very significant level. At least two separate components are identified. The first is characterized by a strong wavelength dependency and a constant position angle (68.6+/-0.3 degrees), which is parallel to the local spiral arm of the host galaxy. The second shows a completely different position angle (151.3+/-0.4) and displays a mild but statistically significant evolution between the two epochs. While the former is identified as arising in the interstellar dust associated with NGC300, the latter is most likely due to continuum polarization by dust scattering in the circumstellar environment. No line depolarization is detected in correspondence of the most intense emission lines, disfavoring electron scattering as the source of intrinsic polarization. This implies a very small deviation from symmetry in the continuum-forming region. Given the observed level of intrinsic polarization, the transient must be surrounded by a significant amount of dust (>4x10^-5 Msun), asymmetrically distributed within a few thousand AU. This most likely implies that one or more asymmetric outflow episodes took place during the past history of the progenitor.
Linear spectropolarimetry is a powerful tool to probe circumstellar structures on spatial scales that cannot yet be achieved through direct imaging. In this review I discuss the role that emission-line polarimetry can play in constraining geometrical and physical properties of a wide range of circumstellar environments, varying from the accretion disks around pre-main sequence T Tauri and Herbig Ae/Be stars, to the issue of stellar wind clumping, and the aspherical outflows from the massive star progenitors of supernovae and long gamma-ray bursts at low metallicity.
Using VLT-FORS1 we performed optical spectropolarimetric observations of the Type Ia SN2006X on 7 pre-maximum epochs (day -10 to day -1) and one post-maximum epoch (+39 days). The SN shows strong continuum interstellar polarization reaching about 8% at 4000A, characterized by a wavelength dependency that is substantially different from that of the Milky-Way dust mixture. Several SN features, like SiII 6355A and the CaII IR triplet, present a marked evolution. The CaII near-IR triplet shows a pronounced polarization (~1.4%) already on day -10 in correspondence with a strong high-velocity featur…
We reduced ESO's archival linear spectropolarimetry data (4000-9000Å) of 6 highly polarized and 8 unpolarized standard stars observed between 2010 and 2016, for a total of 70 epochs, with the FOcal Reducer and low dispersion Spectrograph (FORS2) mounted at the Very Large Telescope. We provide very accurate standard stars polarization measurements as a function of wavelength, and test the performance of the spectropolarimetric mode (PMOS) of FORS2. We used the unpolarized stars to test the time stability of the PMOS mode, and found a small ($\leq$0.1%), but statistically significant, on-axis in…
We performed optical spectropolarimetric observations of the subluminous Type Ia SN2005ke at 3 epochs (days -8, -7, and +76). The explosion properties are derived by comparing the data to explosion and radiation transfer models. The SN shows polarimetric properties that are very similar to the only other subluminous event for which spectropolarimetry is available, i.e. SN1999by. The data present a very marked dominant axis, which is shared by both the continuum and lines such as SiII 6355, suggesting that the relatively large, global asymmetry is common to the photosphere and the line-forming …
We present late time spectropolarimetric observations of SN 2007sr, obtained with the VLT telescope at ESO Paranal Observatory when the object was 63 days after maximum light. The late time spectrum displays strong line polarization in the CaII absorption features. SN 2007sr adds to the case of some normal Type Ia SNe that show high line polarization or repolarization at late times, a fact that might be connected with the presence of high velocity features at early times.
We present spectropolarimetry of SN 2009ip throughout the evolution of its 2012 explosion. During the initial 2012a phase, when the source spectrum exhibits broad P-Cygni lines, we measure a V-band polarization of P~0.9% at a position angle of ~166 deg, indicating substantial asphericity for the 2012a outflow. Near the subsequent peak of the 2012b phase, when the spectrum shows signs of intense interaction with circumstellar material (CSM), we measure P~1.7% at a position angle of 72 deg, indicating a separate physical component of polarization, which has a higher degree of asphericity than th…
[Abridged] - Context: Circumstellar envelopes (CSEs) around Cepheids are particularly interesting as they could impact the Cepheid distance scale, and imply stellar mass loss. Aims: Our goal is to establish the spatial and spectral properties of the CSEs of L Car and RS Pup. This is done through a parametrization of the envelopes in terms of fractional flux (with respect to the star) and angular size. - Methods: We retrieved archival Spitzer images of the two stars (3.5-70 mic), and obtained new imaging with the VLT/VISIR camera in BURST mode (8.6-11.9 mic), as well as interferometry with VLTI…
Spectropolarimetry enables us to measure the geometry and chemical structure of the ejecta in supernova explosions, which is fundamental for the understanding of their explosion mechanism(s) and progenitor systems. We collected archival data of 35 Type Ia Supernovae (SNe Ia), observed with FORS on the Very Large Telescope at 127 epochs in total. We examined the polarization of the Si II $λ$6355 $Å$ line (p$_{\rm Si II}$) as a function of time which is seen to peak at a range of various polarization degrees and epochs relative to maximum brightness. We reproduced the $Δ$m$_{15}$-p$_{\rm Si II}$…
The number of well-studied early-type pre-main-sequence objects is very limited, hampering the study of massive star formation from an observational point of view. Here, we present the results of VLT/FORS2 spectropolarimetric and VLT/X-shooter spectroscopic observations of two recently recognised candidate Herbig Be stars, PDS 27 and PDS 37. Through analysis of spectral lines and photometry, we find that these two objects are hot, 17500 $\pm$ 3500~K, have large radii, 17.0 $\pm$ 4.0 and 25.8 $\pm$ 5.0~${\rm R}_\odot$, and are very massive, 15.3 (+5.4, -4.4) and 21.1 (+11.0, -5.3)~M$_{\odot}$ f…
High spatial and sensitivity images of the Luminous Blue Variable IRAS 18576+0341 were obtained using the mid infrared imager VISIR at the Very Large Telescope and the Very Large Array interferometer. The resulting mid-infrared continuum maps show a similar clumpy and approximately circular symmetric nebula, which contrasts sharply with the asymmetry that characterizes the ionized component of the envelope, as evidenced from the radio and [Ne II] line images obtained with comparable spatial resolution. In particular, there is excellent overall agreement between the 12.8 micron map and the radi…
B[e] supergiants are luminous, massive post-main sequence stars exhibiting non-spherical winds, forbidden lines, and hot dust in a disc-like structure. The physical properties of their rich and complex circumstellar environment (CSE) are not well understood, partly because these CSE cannot be easily resolved at the large distances found for B[e] supergiants (typically $\ga 1$~kpc). From mid-IR spectro-interferometric observations obtained with VLTI/MIDI we seek to resolve and study the CSE of the Galactic B[e] supergiant CPD-57\degr\,2874. For a physical interpretation of the observables (visi…
Context. The star HD 87643, exhibiting the "B[e] phenomenon", has one of the most extreme infrared excesses for this object class. It harbours a large amount of both hot and cold dust, and is surrounded by an extended reflection nebula. Aims. One of our major goals was to investigate the presence of a companion in HD87643. In addition, the presence of close dusty material was tested through a combination of multi-wavelength high spatial 5Aresolution observations. Methods. We observed HD 87643 with high spatial resolution techniques, using the near-IR AMBER/VLTI interferometer with baselines ra…
We describe the evolution of the carbon dust shells around Very Late Thermal Pulse (VLTP) objects as seen at infrared wavelengths. This includes a 20-year overview of the evolution of the dust around Sakurai's object (to which Olivier made a seminal contribution) and FG Sge. VLTPs may occur during the endpoint of as many as 25% of solar mass stars, and may therefore provide a glimpse of the possible fate of the Sun.
We report on over 13 years of optical and near-ultraviolet spectropolarimetric observations of the famous Luminous Blue Variable (LBV), P Cygni. LBVs are a critical transitional phase in the lives of the most massive stars, and achieve the largest mass-loss rates of any group of stars. Using spectropolarimetry, we are able to learn about the geometry of the near circumstellar environment surrounding P Cygni and gain insights into LBV mass-loss. Using data from the HPOL and WUPPE spectropolarimeters, we estimate the interstellar polarization contribution to P Cygni's spectropolarimetric signal,…
Context: Mass-loss occurring in red supergiants (RSGs) is a major contributor to the enrichment of the interstellar medium in dust and molecules. The physical mechanism of this mass loss is however relatively poorly known. Betelgeuse is the nearest RSG, and as such a prime object for high angular resolution observations of its surface (by interferometry) and close circumstellar environment. Aims: The goal of our program is to understand how the material expelled from Betelgeuse is transported from its surface to the interstellar medium, and how it evolves chemically in this process. Methods: W…
HD50138 is a Herbig B[e] star with a circumstellar disc detected at IR and mm wavelength. Its brightness makes it a good candidate for NIR interferometry observations. We aim to resolve, spatially and spectrally, the continuum and hydrogen emission lines in the 2.12-2.47 micron region, to shed light on the immediate circumstellar environment of the star. VLTI/AMBER K-band observations provide spectra, visibilities, differential phases, and closure phases along three long baselines for the continuum, and HI emission in Br$γ$ and five high-n Pfund lines. By computing the pure-line visibilities, …
The processes by which red supergiants lose mass are not fully understood thus-far and their mass-loss rates lack theoretical constraints. The ambient surroundings of the nearby M0.5 Iab star Antares offers an ideal environment to obtain detailed empirical information on the outflow properties at its onset, and hence indirectly, on the mode(s) of mass loss. We present and analyse optical VLT/SPHERE/ZIMPOL polarimetric imaging with angular resolution down to 23 milli-arcsec, sufficient to spatially resolve both the stellar disk and its direct surroundings. We detect a conspicuous feature in pol…
Aims. We study the geometry of the circumstellar environment of the B[e] supergiant star GG Car. Methods. We present observations acquired using the IAGPOL imaging polarimeter in combination with the Eucalyptus-IFU spectrograph to obtain spectropolarimetric measurements of GG Car across Halpha at two epochs. Polarization effects along the emission line are analysed using the Q-U diagram. In particular, the polarization position angle (PA) obtained using the line effect is able to constrain the symmetry axis of the disk/envelope. Results. By analysing the fluxes, GG Car shows an increase in its…
Aims: We investigate the structure of the circumstellar disk of the T Tauri star S CrA N and test whether the observations agree with the standard picture proposed for Herbig Ae stars. Methods: Our observations were carried out with the VLTI/AMBER instrument in the H and K bands with the low spectral resolution mode. For the interpretation of our near-infrared AMBER and archival mid-infrared MIDI visibilities, we employed both geometric and temperature-gradient models. Results: To characterize the disk size, we first fitted geometric models consisting of a stellar point source, a ring-shaped d…
Binary post-AGB stars are interesting laboratories to study both the evolution of binaries as well as the structure of circumstellar disks. A multiwavelength high angular resolution study of the prototypical object 89 Herculis is performed with the aim of identifying and locating the different emission components seen in the SED. A large interferometric data set, collected over the past decade and covering optical and near-IR wavelengths, is analyzed with simple geometric models. Combining the interferometric constraints with the photometry and the optical spectra, we reassess the energy budge…
We present spectropolarimetric observations of the nearby Type Ia SN 2014J in M82 over six epochs: +0, +7, +23, +51, +77, +109, and +111 days with respect to B-band maximum. The strong continuum polarization, which is constant with time, shows a wavelength dependence unlike that produced by linear dichroism in Milky Way dust. The observed polarization may be due entirely to interstellar dust or include a circumstellar scattering component. We find that the polarization angle aligns with the magnetic field of the host galaxy, arguing for an interstellar origin. Additionally, we confirm a peak i…

Context: Betelgeuse is one the largest stars in the sky in terms of angular diameter. Structures on the stellar photosphere have been detected in the visible and near-infrared as well as a compact molecular environment called the MOLsphere. Mid-infrared observations have revealed the nature of some of the molecules in the MOLsphere, some being the precursor of dust. Aims: Betelgeuse is an excellent candidate to understand the process of mass loss in red supergiants. Using diffraction-limited adaptive optics (AO) in the near-infrared, we probe the photosphere and close environment of Betelgeuse…
High-mass multiples might form via fragmentation of self-gravitational disks or alternative scenarios such as disk-assisted capture. However, only few observational constraints exist on the architecture and disk structure of high-mass protobinaries and their accretion properties. Here we report the discovery of a close ($57.9\pm0.2$mas=170au) high-mass protobinary, IRAS17216-3801, where our VLTI/GRAVITY+AMBER near-infrared interferometry allows us to image the circumstellar disks around the individual components with 3 milliarcsecond resolution. We estimate the component masses to $\sim20$ and…
We present seven epochs of spectropolarimetry of the Type IIb supernova (SN) 2011dh in M51, spanning 86 days of its evolution. The first epoch was obtained 9 days after the explosion, when the photosphere was still in the depleted hydrogen layer of the stripped-envelope progenitor. Continuum polarization is securely detected at the level of P~0.5% through day 14 and appears to diminish by day 30, which is different from the prevailing trends suggested by studies of other core-collapse SNe. Time-variable modulations in P and position angle are detected across P-Cygni line features. H-alpha and …
We present the results of spectropolarimetric observations of 12 Herbig Ae/Be objects. Our data have the largest spectropolarimetric wavelength coverage, 4560 Å to 9480 Å, published to date. A change in linear polarisation across the Hα line, is detected in all objects. Such a line effect reveals the fact that stellar photons are scattered off free electrons that are not distributed in a spherically symmetric volume, suggesting the presence of small disks around these accreting objects. Thanks to the large wavelength coverage, we can report that Hα is the spectral line in the optical wavelengt…
The eruption of V4332 Sgr was observed in 1994. During the outburst, the object became extremely red, so it has been considered as to belong to red transients of the V838 Mon type. Optical spectroscopy obtained a few years after the eruption showed a faint M-type stellar spectrum underlying numerous molecular and atomic emission features. It has recently been suggested that the central object in V4332 Sgr is now hidden in a dusty disc and that the photospheric spectrum of this object observed in the optical results from scattering of the radiation of the central star on dust grains in the circ…
Herbig-Haro flows are signposts of recent major accretion and outflow episodes. We aim to determine the nature and properties of the little-known outflow source HH 250-IRS, which is embedded in the Aquila clouds. We have obtained adaptive optics-assisted L-band images with the NACO instrument on the Very Large Telescope (VLT), together with N- and Q-band imaging with VISIR also on the VLT. Using the SINFONI instrument on the VLT we carried out H- and K-band integral field spectroscopy of HH 250-IRS, complemented with spectra obtained with the SpeX instrument at the InfraRed Telescope Facility …
The origin of the diverse light-curve shapes of Type II supernovae (SNe), and whether they come from similar or distinct progenitors, has been actively discussed for decades. Here we report spectropolarimetry of two fast declining Type II (Type IIL) SNe: SN 2013ej and SN 2017ahn. SN 2013ej exhibited high continuum polarization from very soon after the explosion to the radioactive tail phase with time-variable polarization angles. The origin of this polarimetric behavior can be interpreted as the combination of two different aspherical structures, namely an aspherical interaction of the SN ejec…
Most Wolf-Rayet stars (WR) of WC9 sub-type exhibit a dusty circumstellar envelope, but it is still a matter of debate how dust can form in their harsh environment. In a few cases, a pinwheel-like structure of the dusty envelope has been detected. Therefore, it has been suggested that dust formation in all dusty WR stars might be linked to colliding winds in a binary system. We probed the innermost region of the circumstellar dust shell of the deeply embedded WR star WR 118. We carried out spectro-interferometric observations using the AMBER instrument of ESO's Very Large Telescope Interferomet…
The innermost parts of dusty debris disks around main sequence stars are currently poorly known due to the high contrast and small angular separation with their parent stars. Using near-infrared interferometry, we aim to detect the signature of hot dust around the nearby A4 V star Fomalhaut, which has already been suggested to harbor a warm dust population in addition to a cold dust ring located at about 140 AU. Archival data obtained with the VINCI instrument at the VLTI are used to study the fringe visibility of the Fomalhaut system at projected baseline lengths ranging from 4 m to 140 m in …
We present new thermal IR photometry and spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of eight classical Cepheids (type I) and three type II Cepheids, using VISIR thermal IR photometric measurements, supplemented with literature data. We used the BURST mode of the instrument to get diffraction-limited images at 8.59, 11.25 and 11.85 μm. The SEDs show a IR excess at wavelengths longer than 10μm in ten of the eleven stars. We tentatively attribute these excesses to circumstellar emission created by mass loss from the Cepheids. With some hypotheses for the dust composition, we estimated a total mass of t…
We report spectropolarimetric observations of the Type Ia supernova (SN) 2021rhu at four epochs: $-$7, +0, +36, and +79 days relative to its $B$-band maximum luminosity. A wavelength-dependent continuum polarization peaking at $3890 \pm 93$ Angstroms and reaching a level of $p_{\rm max}=1.78% \pm 0.02$% was found. The peak of the polarization curve is bluer than is typical in the Milky Way, indicating a larger proportion of small dust grains along the sightline to the SN. After removing the interstellar polarization, we found a pronounced increase of the polarization in the CaII near-infrared …
As the nearest known AGB star (d=64pc) and one of the brightest (mK-2), L2 Pup is a particularly interesting benchmark object to monitor the final stages of stellar evolution. We report new lucky imaging observations of this star with the VLT/NACO adaptive optics system in twelve narrow band filters covering the 1.0-4.0 microns wavelength range. These diffraction limited images reveal an extended circumstellar dust lane in front of the star, that exhibits a high opacity in the J band and becomes translucent in the H and K bands. In the L band, extended thermal emission from the dust is detecte…
It has been recently discovered that Cepheids harbor circumstellar envelopes (CSEs). RS Pup is the Cepheid that presents the most prominent circumstellar envelope known, the origin of which is not yet understood. Our purpose is to estimate the flux contribution of the CSE around RS Pup at the one arcsecond scale (~2000 AU) and to investigate its geometry, especially regarding asymmetries, to constrain its physical properties. We obtained near-infrared images in two narrow band filters centered on λ= 1.644 and 2.180 μm (NB 1.64 and IB 2.18, respectively) that comprise two recombination lines of…
The non-detection of companion stars in Type Ia supernova (SN) progenitor systems lends support to the notion of double-degenerate (DD) systems and explosions triggered by the merging of two white dwarfs. This very asymmetric process should lead to a conspicuous polarimetric signature. By contrast, observations consistently find very low continuum polarization as the signatures from the explosion process largely dominate over the pre-explosion configuration within several days. Critical information about the interaction of the ejecta with a companion and any circumstellar matter is encoded in …
We present optical spectroscopic data of the inner circumstellar ring around SN 1987A from the Anglo-Australian Telescope (AAT) and the Very Large Telescope (VLT) between ~1400 and ~5000 days post-explosion. We also assembled the available optical and near-infrared line fluxes from the literature between ~300 and ~2000 days. These line light curves were fitted with a photoionization model to determine the density structure and the elemental abundances for the inner ring. We found densities ranging from 1x10^3 to 3x10^4 atoms cm^-3 and a total mass of the ionized gas of ~0.058 Msun within the i…

Circumstellar disks surrounding young stars are known to be the birthplaces of planets, and the innermost astronomical unit is of particular interest. We present new long-baseline spectro-interferometric observations of the HerbigAe star, HR5999, obtained in the H and K bands with the AMBER instrument at the VLTI, and aim to produce near-infrared images at the sub-AU spatial scale. We spatially resolve the circumstellar material and reconstruct images using the MiRA algorithm. In addition, we interpret the interferometric observations using models that assume that the near-infrared excess is d…
Type IIn/Ia-CSM supernovae (SNe IIn/Ia-CSM) are classified by their characteristic spectra, which exhibit narrow hydrogen emission lines originating from a strong interaction with a circumstellar medium (CSM) together with broad lines of intermediate-mass elements. We performed intensive follow-up observations of SN IIn/Ia-CSM 2020uem, including photometry, spectroscopy, and polarimetry. In this paper, we focus on the results of polarimetry. We performed imaging polarimetry at $66$ days and spectropolarimetry at $103$ days after the discovery. SN 2020uem shows a high continuum polarization of …
Aims. Through the ATOMIUM project, based on an ALMA large program, we aim to present a consistent view of a sample of 17 nearby cool evolved stars (Aymptotic Giant Branch and red supergiant stars). Methods. Here we present VLT/SPHERE-ZIMPOL polarimetric maps obtained in the visible of 14 out of the 17 ATOMIUM sources. They were obtained contemporaneously with the ALMA high spatial resolution data. To help interpret the polarized signal, we produced synthetic maps of light scattering by dust, through 3D radiative transfer simulations with the RADMC3D code. Results. The degree of linear polariza…
We search high-resolution and high-quality VLT/UVES optical spectra of the hot R Coronae Borealis (RCB) star DY Cen for electronic transitions of the C60 molecule and diffuse interstellar bands (DIBs). We report the non-detection of the strongest C60 electronic transitions (e.g., those at ~3760, 3980, and 4024 A). Absence of C60 absorption bands may support recent laboratory results, which show that the ~7.0, 8.5, 17.4, and 18.8 um emission features seen in DY Cen - and other similar objects with PAH-like dominated IR spectra - are attributable to proto-fullerenes or fullerene precursors rathe…
