We present the results of spectropolarimetric observations of 12 Herbig Ae/Be objects. Our data have the largest spectropolarimetric wavelength coverage, 4560 Å to 9480 Å, published to date. A change in linear polarisation across the Hα line, is detected in all objects. Such a line effect reveals the fact that stellar photons are scattered off free electrons that are not distributed in a spherically symmetric volume, suggesting the presence of small disks around these accreting objects. Thanks to the large wavelength coverage, we can report that Hα is the spectral line in the optical wavelength range that is most sensitive to revealing deviations from spherical symmetry, and the one most likely to show a line effect across the polarisation in such cases. Few other spectral lines display changes in polarisation across the line. In addition, Hα is the only line which shows an effect across its absorption component in some sources. We present a scenario explaining this finding and demonstrate that the detection of the line effect strongly relies on the number of photons scattered into our line of sight. We highlight the special case of R Mon, which is the only object in our sample to show many lines with a polarisation effect, which is much stronger than in all other objects. Given that the object and its nebulosity is spatially resolved, we argue that this is due to scattering of the stellar and emission spectrum off circumstellar dust.
Accretion is the prime mode of star formation, but the exact mode has not yet been identified in the Herbig Ae/Be mass range. We provide evidence that the the maximum variation in mass-accretion rate is reached on a rotational timescale, which suggests that rotational modulation is the key to understanding mass accretion. We show how spectropolarimetry is uniquely capable of resolving the innermost (within 0.1 AU) regions between the star and the disk, allowing us to map the 3D geometry of the accreting gas, and test theories of angular momentum evolution. We present Monte Carlo line-emission …
Our knowledge of the presence and the strength of magnetic fields in intermediate-mass pre-main-sequence stars remains very poor. We present new magnetic field measurements in six Herbig Ae/Be stars observed with HARPS in spectropolarimetric mode. We downloaded from the European Southern Observatory (ESO) archive the publically available HARPS spectra for six Herbig Ae/Be stars. Wavelength shifts between right- and left-hand side circularly polarised spectra were interpreted in terms of a longitudinal magnetic field <B_z>, using the moment technique introduced by Mathys. The application of the…
The number of well-studied early-type pre-main-sequence objects is very limited, hampering the study of massive star formation from an observational point of view. Here, we present the results of VLT/FORS2 spectropolarimetric and VLT/X-shooter spectroscopic observations of two recently recognised candidate Herbig Be stars, PDS 27 and PDS 37. Through analysis of spectral lines and photometry, we find that these two objects are hot, 17500 $\pm$ 3500~K, have large radii, 17.0 $\pm$ 4.0 and 25.8 $\pm$ 5.0~${\rm R}_\odot$, and are very massive, 15.3 (+5.4, -4.4) and 21.1 (+11.0, -5.3)~M$_{\odot}$ f…
Several arguments have been presented that favour a scenario in which the low detection rate of magnetic fields in Herbig Ae stars can be explained by the weakness of these fields and rather large measurement uncertainties. Spectropolarimetric studies involving sharp-lined Herbig Ae stars appear to be promising for the detection of such weak magnetic fields. These studies offer a clear spectrum interpretation with respect to the effects of blending, local velocity fields, and chemical abundances, and allow us to identify a proper sample of spectral lines appropriate for magnetic field determin…
Linear spectropolarimetry is a powerful tool to probe circumstellar structures on spatial scales that cannot yet be achieved through direct imaging. In this review I discuss the role that emission-line polarimetry can play in constraining geometrical and physical properties of a wide range of circumstellar environments, varying from the accretion disks around pre-main sequence T Tauri and Herbig Ae/Be stars, to the issue of stellar wind clumping, and the aspherical outflows from the massive star progenitors of supernovae and long gamma-ray bursts at low metallicity.
We present Halpha linear spectropolarimetry of a large sample of Herbig Ae/Be stars. Together with newly obtained data for 17 objects, the sample contains 56 objects, the largest such sample to date. A change in linear polarization across the Halpha line is detected in 42 (75 %) objects, which confirms the previous finding that the circumstellar environment around these stars on small spatial scales has an asymmetric structure, which is typically identified with a disk. A second outcome of this research is that we confirm that Herbig Ae stars are similar to T Tauri stars in displaying a line p…
We summarise the results of a spectropolarimetric survey of 56 chemically peculiar (CP) stars in the association of Orion OB1. We uniformly collected the observational material with the 6-m telescope BTA of the Special Astrophysical Observatory in 2013-2021. We identify 14 new magnetic CP stars with a longitudinal magnetic field exceeding approximately 500 G. The studied sample contains 31 magnetic stars or 55% of the whole CP population in Orion OB1. We show that the percentage of the magnetic CP stars and the field strength drops sharply with age. The mean longitudinal magnetic field in the …
This is the first in a series of papers in which we describe and report the analysis of a large survey of Herbig Ae/Be stars in circular spectropolarimetry. Using the ESPaDOnS and Narval high-resolution spectropolarimeters at the Canada-France-Hawaii and Bernard Lyot Telescopes, respectively, we have acquired 132 circularly-polarised spectra of 70 Herbig Ae/Be stars and Herbig candidates. The large majority of these spectra are characterised by a resolving power of about 65,000, and a spectral coverage from about 3700 ang to 1 micron. The peak SNR per CCD pixel ranges from below 100 (for the f…
V735 Sgr was known as an enigmatic star with rapid brightness variations. Long-term OGLE photometry, brightness measurements in infrared bands, and recently obtained moderate resolution spectrum from the 6.5-m Magellan telescope show that this star is an active young stellar object of Herbig Ae/Be type.
We examine the long-term light curve, optical spectrum, spectral energy distribution, and Galactic location of V1117 Her in order to establish its nature. V1117 Her is most probably a young intermediate-mass star whose cyclic brightness dimmings are caused by changing circumstellar dust structures.
We determine abundances from the absorption spectrum of the magnetic Herbig Ae star HD 190073 (V1295 Aql). The observations are primarily from HARPS spectra obtained at a single epoch. We accept arguments that the presence of numerous emission lines does not vitiate a classical abundance analysis, though it likely reduces the achievable accuracy. Most abundances are closely solar, but several elements show departures of a factor of two to three, as an earlier study has also shown. We present quantitative measurements of more than 60 emission lines, peak intensities, equivalent widths, and FWHM…
We investigate the stellar atmospheres of the two components of the Herbig Ae SB2 system AK Sco to determine the elements present in the stars and their abundance. Equal stellar parameters T_eff = 6500K and log g = 4.5 were used for both stars. We studied HARPSpol spectra (resolution 110,000) that were previously used to state the presence of a weak magnetic field in the secondary. A composite synthetic spectrum was compared in the whole observed region lambda 3900-6912A with the observed spectrum. The abundances were derived mostly from unblended profiles, in spite of their sparsity, owing to…
MOST observations and model analysis of the Herbig Ae star HD 34282 (V1366 Ori) reveal δ-Scuti pulsations. 22 frequencies are observed, 10 of which confirm those previously identified by Amado et al. (2006), and 12 of which are newly discovered in this work. We show that the weighted-average frequency in each group fits the radial p-mode frequencies of viable models. We argue that the observed pulsation spectrum extends just to the edge to the acoustic cut-off frequency and show that this also is consistent with our best-fitting models.
The eruption of V4332 Sgr was observed in 1994. During the outburst, the object became extremely red, so it has been considered as to belong to red transients of the V838 Mon type. Optical spectroscopy obtained a few years after the eruption showed a faint M-type stellar spectrum underlying numerous molecular and atomic emission features. It has recently been suggested that the central object in V4332 Sgr is now hidden in a dusty disc and that the photospheric spectrum of this object observed in the optical results from scattering of the radiation of the central star on dust grains in the circ…
The double-lined spectroscopic binary HD 104237 (DX Cha) is part of a complex system of some half-dozen nearby young stars. We report a significant change from an orbit for the SB2 system derived from 1999-2000 observations. We obtain abundances from the primary and secondary spectra. The abundance analysis uses both detailed spectral synthesis and determinations based on equivalent widths of weak absorption lines with W(lambda) typically < 25 mA. Abundances are derived for 25 elements in the primary, and 17 elements in the secondary. Apart from lithium and zirconium, abundances do not depart …
We present the results of our observations of eight magnetic Herbig Ae/Be stars obtained with the X-shooter spectrograph mounted on UT2 at the VLT. X-shooter provides a simultaneous, medium-resolution and high-sensitivity spectrum over the entire wavelength range from 300 to 2500 nm. We estimate the mass accretion rates M_acc of the targets from 13 different spectral diagnostics using empiric calibrations derived previously for T Tauri-type stars and brown dwarfs. We have estimated the mass accretion rates of our targets, which range from 2x10^-9 to 2x10^-7 M_sun/yr. Furthermore, we have found…
The combination of photometry, spectroscopy and spectropolarimetry of the chemically peculiar stars often aims to study the complex physical phenomena such as stellar pulsation, chemical inhomogeneity, magnetic field and their interplay with stellar atmosphere and circumstellar environment. The prime objective of the present study is to determine the atmospheric parameters of a set of Am stars to understand their evolutionary status. Atmospheric abundances and basic parameters are determined using full spectrum fitting technique by comparing the high-resolution spectra to the synthetic spectra…
Z CMa is a binary system which consists of two young stars: A Herbig AeBe component "Z CMa NW" embedded in a dust cocoon and a less massive component "Z CMa SE", which is classified as a FU Orionis type star. Recently, the system showed the largest outburst reported during the almost 90 years of available observations. During the recent outburst we detect that the Z CMa system is polarized by 2.6% in the continuum and emission line spectrum, with a position angle still perpendicular to the jet. From the high level of polarization we conclude that the outburst is associated with the dust embedd…
We present late time spectropolarimetric observations of SN 2007sr, obtained with the VLT telescope at ESO Paranal Observatory when the object was 63 days after maximum light. The late time spectrum displays strong line polarization in the CaII absorption features. SN 2007sr adds to the case of some normal Type Ia SNe that show high line polarization or repolarization at late times, a fact that might be connected with the presence of high velocity features at early times.
We identify 20 F-type Herbig stars and provide a list of 22 pre-main-sequence candidates from LAMOST DR8. The effective temperature, distance, extinction, stellar luminosity, mass, and radius are derived for each Herbig star based on optical spectra, photometry, Gaia EDR3 parallaxes, and pre-main-sequence evolutionary tracks. According to spectral energy distributions, 19 F-type Herbig stars belong to Class II YSOs, and one belongs to the flat-spectrum class. Four have Spitzer IRS spectra, of which three show extremely weak polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons emissions, and three with both amorph…
In this paper we report the results of high-resolution circular spectropolarimetric monitoring of the Herbig Ae star V380 Ori, in which we discovered a magnetic field in 2005. A careful study of the intensity spectrum reveals the presence of a cool spectroscopic companion. By modelling the binary spectrum we infer the effective temperature of both stars: $10500\pm 500$ K for the primary, and $5500\pm500$ K for the secondary, and we argue that the high metallicity ($[M/H] = 0.5$), required to fit the lines may imply that the primary is a chemically peculiar star. We observe that the radial velo…
W 601 (NGC 6611 601) is one of the handful of known magnetic Herbig Ae/Be stars. We report the analysis of a large dataset of high-resolution spectropolarimetry. The star is a previously unreported spectroscopic binary, consisting of 2 B2 stars with a mass ratio of 1.8, masses of 12 M$_\odot$ and 6.2 $M_\odot$, in an eccentric 110-day orbit. The magnetic field belongs to the secondary, W 601 B. The H$α$ emission is consistent with an origin in W 601 B's centrifugal magnetosphere; the star is therefore not a classical Herbig Be star in the sense that its emission is not formed in an accretion d…
Herbig Ae/Be stars are intermediate-mass pre-main sequence (PMS) stars showing signs of intense activity and strong stellar winds, whose origin is not yet understood in the frame of current theoretical models of stellar evolution for young stars. The evolutionary tracks of the earlier Herbig Ae stars cross a recently discovered PMS instability strip. Many of these stars exhibit pulsations of delta Scuti type. HD 104237 is a well-known pulsating Herbig Ae star. In this article, we reinvestigated an extensive high-resolution quasi-continuous spectroscopic data set in order to search for very fai…
A new class of pre-main sequence objects has been recently identified as pre-transitional disks. They present near-infrared excess coupled to a flux deficit at about 10 microns and a rising mid-infrared and far-infrared spectrum. These features suggest a disk structure with inner and outer dust components, separated by a dust-depleted region (or gap). We here report on the first interferometric observations of the disk around the Herbig Ae star HD 139614. Its infrared spectrum suggests a flared disk, and presents pre-transitional features, namely a substantial near-infrared excess accompanied b…
We analysed 337 multi-epoch optical spectra of 38 Herbig Ae/Be (HAeBe) stars to gain insights into the variability behaviour of the circumstellar (CS) atomic gas. Equivalent widths (EWs) and line fluxes of the Halpha, [OI]6300, HeI5876 and NaID lines were obtained for each spectrum; the Halpha line width at 10% of peak intensity (W10) and profile shapes were also measured and classified. The mean line strengths and relative variabilities were quantified for each star. Simultaneous optical photometry was used to estimate the line fluxes. We present a homogeneous spectroscopic database of HAeBe …
Aims: From a coherent interpretation of the linear polarisation detected in the spectral lines of the Mira star $χ$ Cyg, we derive information about the dynamics of the stellar photosphere, including pulsation. Methods: From spectropolarimetric observations of $χ$ Cyg, we perform careful analysis of the polarisation signals observed in atomic and molecular lines, both in absorption and emission, using the radiative transfer in the polarisation context, through two mechanisms: intrinsic polarisation and continuum depolarisation. We also explain the observed line doubling phenomenon in terms of …
This work presents X-Shooter/VLT spectra of the prototypical, isolated Herbig Ae stars HD 31648 (MWC 480) and HD 163296 over five epochs separated by timescales ranging from days to months. Each spectrum spans over a wide wavelength range covering from 310 to 2475 nm. We have monitored the continuum excess in the Balmer region of the spectra and the luminosity of twelve ultraviolet, optical and near infrared spectral lines that are commonly used as accretion tracers for T Tauri stars. The observed strengths of the Balmer excesses have been reproduced from a magnetospheric accretion shock model…
We present spectropolarimetry of SN 2009ip throughout the evolution of its 2012 explosion. During the initial 2012a phase, when the source spectrum exhibits broad P-Cygni lines, we measure a V-band polarization of P~0.9% at a position angle of ~166 deg, indicating substantial asphericity for the 2012a outflow. Near the subsequent peak of the 2012b phase, when the spectrum shows signs of intense interaction with circumstellar material (CSM), we measure P~1.7% at a position angle of 72 deg, indicating a separate physical component of polarization, which has a higher degree of asphericity than th…
Astrochemical evolution step of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) around a Herbig Ae young star was analyzed using the first principles quantum chemical calculation. For simplicity, model molecule was selected to be acenaphthylene (C12H8) with hydrocarbon one pentagon combined with two hexagons. In a protoplanetary disk, molecules are illuminated by high energy photon from the central star and ionized to be cation (C12H8)n+ . Calculation shows that from n=0 to 6, molecule keeps its polycyclic hydrocarbon configuration. Whereas, at ionization step n=7, there occurs dehydrogenation of (C12H8…
We report a spectropolarimetric study of the post-AGB binary system 89 Herculis, based on data acquired with the high-resolution Catania Astrophysical Observatory Spectropolarimeter, the HArps-North POlarimeter and the Echelle SpectroPolarimetric Device for the Observation of Stars. The linear polarization clearly detected across single atmospheric lines in absorption is characterized by complex Q and U morphologies that are variable with the orbital period of the system. Gauss-level magnetic fields, continuum depolarization due to pulsations, hot spots and scattering in the circumstellar envi…
We present the first spectropolarimetric observations of a hydrogen-free superluminous supernova at z=0.1136, namely SN 2015bn. The transient shows significant polarization at both the observed epochs: one 24 days before maximum light in the rest-frame, and the subsequent at 27 days after peak luminosity. Analysis of the Q-U plane suggests the presence of a dominant axis and no physical departure from the main axis at either epoch. The polarization spectrum along the dominant axis is characterized by a strong wavelength dependence and an increase in the signal from the first to the second epoc…
Context. HD 85567 is an enigmatic object exhibiting the B[e] phenomenon, i.e. an infrared excess and forbidden emission lines in the optical. The object's evolutionary status is uncertain and there are conflicting claims that it is either a young stellar object or an evolved, interacting binary. Aims. To elucidate the reason for the B[e] behaviour of HD 85567, we have observed it with the VLTI and AMBER. Methods. Our observations were conducted in the K-band with moderate spectral resolution (R~1500, i.e. 200 km/s). The spectrum of HD 85567 exhibits Br gamma and CO overtone bandhead emission. …
Circumstellar disks and outflows play a fundamental role in star formation. Infrared spectro-interferometry allows the inner accretion-ejection region to be resolved. We measured interferometric visibilities, wavelength-differential phases, and closure phases of MWC 297 with a spectral resolution of 12000. To interpret our MWC 297 observations, we employed disk-wind models. The measured continuum visibilities confirm previous results that the continuum-emitting region of MWC 297 is remarkably compact. We derive a continuum ring-fit radius of ~2.2 mas (~0.56 AU at a distance of 250 pc), which i…
We search for periodic variations in the radial velocity of the young Herbig star HD 135344B with the aim to determine a rotation period. We analyzed 44 high-resolution optical spectra taken over a time range of 151 days. The spectra were acquired with FEROS at the 2.2m MPG/ESO telescope in La Silla. The stellar parameters of HD 135344B are determined by fitting synthetic spectra to the stellar spectrum. In order to obtain radial velocity measurements, the stellar spectra have been cross-correlated with a theoretical template computed from determined stellar parameters. We report the first dir…
We attempt to constrain the physical properties of the inner, gaseous disk of the Herbig Be star BD+65 1637 using non-LTE, circumstellar disk codes and observed spectra (3700 to 10,500 Å) from the ESPaDOnS instrument on CFHT. The photoionizing radiation of the central star is assumed to be the sole source of input energy for the disk. We model optical and near-infrared emission lines that are thought to form in this region using standard techniques that have been successful in modeling the spectra of Classical Be stars. By comparing synthetic line profiles of hydrogen, helium, iron and calcium…
Jets and outflows are associated with young stellar objects across the stellar mass spectrum, from brown dwarf protostars to massive, Ae/Be stars. Frequently, the jet morphology is spatially discontinuous because of the temporal variability of the ejection from the driving source. Images covering a wide field of view around the jet driving-source are useful to map the large-scale jet emission and to explore the mass ejection history. The aim of this work was to search for large-scale optical Herbig-Haro (HH) objects lying in a wide field around a sample of IRAS sources, candidates to trace you…
The issues related to moving elements in space and instruments working in broader wavelength ranges lead to a need for robust polarimeters, efficient on a wide spectral domain, and adapted to space conditions. As part of the UVMag consortium, created to develop spectropolarimetric UV facilities in space, such as the Arago mission project, we present an innovative concept of static spectropolarimetry. We studied a static and polychromatic method for spectropolarimetry, applicable to stellar physics. Instead of modulating the polarization information temporally, as usually done in spectropolarim…
Observations of the Earthshine off the Moon allow for the unique opportunity to measure the large-scale Earth atmosphere. Another opportunity is realized during a total lunar eclipse which, if seen from the Moon, is like a transit of the Earth in front of the Sun. We thus aim at transmission spectroscopy of an Earth transit by tracing the solar spectrum during the total lunar eclipse of January 21, 2019. Time series spectra of the Tycho crater were taken with the Potsdam Echelle Polarimetric and Spectroscopic Instrument (PEPSI) at the Large Binocular Telescope (LBT) in its polarimetric mode in…
The LMC star, SSTISAGE1C J050756.44-703453.9, was first noticed during a survey of EROS-2 lightcurves for stars with large irregular brightness variations typical of the R Coronae Borealis (RCB) class. However, the visible spectrum showing emission lines including the Balmer and Paschen series as well as many Fe II lines is emphatically not that of an RCB star. This star has all of the characteristics of a typical UX Ori star. It has a spectral type of approximately A2 and has excited an H II region in its vicinity. However, if it is an LMC member, then it is very luminous for a Herbig Ae/Be s…
MWC 778 is an unusual and little-studied young stellar object located in the IC 2144 nebula. Recent spectroscopy by Herbig and Vacca (2008) suggested the presence of an edge-on circumstellar disk around it. We present near-infrared adaptive optics imaging polarimetry and mid-infrared imaging which directly confirm the suspected nearly-edge-on disk around MWC 778 (i ~ 70-80 degrees) plus reveal a more extensive envelope pierced by bipolar outflow cavities. In addition, our mid-infrared images and near-infrared polarization maps detect a spiral-shaped structure surrounding MWC 778, with arms tha…
CONTEXT: The study of pulsation in Pre--Main--Sequence intermediate-mass stars represents an important tool for deriving information on fundamental stellar parameters and internal structure, as well as for testing current theoretical models. Interest in this class of variable stars has significantly increased during the last decade and about 30 members are presently known in the literature. AIMS: We have constructed the frequency spectrum of the oscillations in V346 Ori. We apply asteroseismic tools to these data to estimate the intrinsic parameters (mass, luminosity, effective temperature) of…
HD 100453 has an IR spectral energy distribution (SED) which can be fit with a power-law plus a blackbody. Previous analysis of the SED suggests that the system is a young Herbig Ae star with a gas-rich, flared disk. We reexamine the evolutionary state of the HD 100453 system by refining its age (based on a candidate low-mass companion) and by examining limits on the disk extent, mass accretion rate, and gas content of the disk environment. We confirm that HD 100453B is a common proper motion companion to HD 100453A, with a spectral type of M4.0V - M4.5V, and derive an age of 10 +/- 2 Myr. We …
We studied the polarised spectrum of the post-AGB binary system 89\,Herculis on the basis of data collected with the high resolution \emph{Catania Astrophysical Observatory Spectropolarimeter}, \emph{HArps-North POlarimeter} and \emph{Echelle SpectroPolarimetric Device for the Observation of Stars}. We find the existence of linear polarisation in the strongest metal lines in absorption and with low excitation potentials. Signals are characterized by complex Q and U morphologies varying with the orbital period. As possible origin of this "Second Solar Spectrum"-like behaviour, we rule out magne…
R~CrA is the brightest member of the Coronet star forming region and it is the closest Herbig AeBe star with a spectrum dominated by emission lines. Its luminosity has been monitored since the end of the 19th century, but the origin of its variability, which shows a stable period of $65.767\pm 0.007$~days, is still unknown. We studied photometric and spectroscopic data for this star to investigate the nature of the variability of R~CrA. We exploited the fact that near infrared luminosity of the Herbig AeBe stars is roughly proportional to the total luminosity of the stars to derive the absorpt…
We present results of a UBVIc variability survey in the young open cluster NGC 2244. In total, we found 245 variable stars. Most of them, 211 stars, are variables with irregular variations. Furthermore, 23 periodic variables were found. We also detected four candidates for delta Scuti stars and 7 eclipsing binaries. Based on the mid-infrared Spitzer and WISE photometry and near infrared JHKs 2MASS photometry we classified 104 young stellar sources among our variables: 1 Class I object, 1 Class I/flat spectrum object, 4 flat spectrum objects, 91 Class II objects and 7 transition disk objects. T…
We present phase-resolved spectroscopy, photometry and circular spectropolarimetry of the eclipsing polar UZ Fornacis. Doppler tomography of the strongest emission lines using the inside-out projection revealed the presence of three emission regions: from the irradiated face of the secondary star, the ballistic stream and the threading region, and the magnetically confined accretion stream. The total intensity spectrum shows broad emission features and a continuum that rises in the blue. The circularly polarized spectrum shows the presence of three cyclotron emission harmonics at $\sim$4500 Å,…
Spectra that cover 0.63 - 0.69um with a spectral resolution ~ 17000 are presented of the W Serpentis system V367 Cygni. Absorption lines of FeII and SiII that form in a circumsystem shell are prominent features, and the depths of these are stable with time, suggesting that the shell is smoothly distributed and well-mixed. Further evidence of uniformity comes from modest radial velocity variations measured in the deepest parts of the shell lines. It is suggested that motions previously attributed to rotation of the shell are instead artifacts of contamination from the donor star spectrum. A don…
We present an analysis of the optical observations of Herbig AeBe star V1686 Cyg, which is associated with a small isolated star-forming region around HAeBe star BD+40$^{\circ}$4124. We observed this star as a part of our project of young eruptive stars investigation. Observations were held on 2.6m telescope of Byurakan Observatory from 2015 to 2017. For this period we obtained V1686 Cyg direct images and 14 medium- and low-resolution spectra. In the course of observations we noticed that this star underwent a not-typical brightness outburst. After data reduction we found that the full rise an…
We present new mid-infrared spectra for a sample of 15 targets (1 FU Orionis object, 4 Herbig Ae stars, 5 T Tauri stars and 5 Vega type stars), obtained with the TIMMI2 camera at La Silla Observatory (ESO). Three targets are members of the beta Pic moving group (HD 155555, HD 181296 and HD 319139). PAH bands are observed towards the T Tauri star HD 34700 and the Herbig Ae star PDS 144 N. For HD 34700, the band profiles indicate processed PAHs. The spectrum of the Vega-type object eta Corvi (HD 109085), for which a resolved disk at sub-mm wavelengths is known, is entirely stellar between 8--13 …
We present our results from a mid-infrared interferometric survey targeted at the planet-forming region in the circumstellar disks around low- and intermediate-mass young stars. Our sample consist of 82 objects, including T Tauri stars, Herbig Ae stars, and young eruptive stars. Our main results are: 1) Disks around T Tauri stars are similar to those around Herbig Ae stars, but are relatively more extended once we account for stellar luminosity. 2) From the distribution of the sizes of the mid-infrared emitting region we find that inner dusty disk holes may be present in roughly half of the sa…
We employ high resolution spectroscopy and spectropolarimetry to derive the physical properties and magnetic characteristics of the multiple system HD 164492C, located in the young open cluster M20. The spectrum reveals evidence of 3 components: a broad-lined early B star (HD 164492C1), a narrow-lined early B star (HD 164492C2), and a late B star (HD 164492C3). Components C2 and C3 exhibit significant ($>100$ km/s) bulk radial velocity variations with a period of $12.5351(7)$ d that we attribute to eccentric binary motion around a common centre-of-mass. Component C1 exhibits no detectable radi…
In this paper we present high resolution 4.7micron spectra of the isolated Herbig Be star HD100546. HD100546 has been the subject of intense scrutiny because it is a young nearby star with a transitional disk. We observe the Delta v=1 ro-vibrational CO transitions in order to clarify the distribution of warm gas in the inner disk. Modeling of the CO spectrum indicates that the gas is vibrationally excited by collisions and UV fluorescence. The observed emission extends from 13-100AU. The inner edge of the molecular gas emission is consistent with the inner edge of the optically thick dust disk…
We report on the discovery of three candidate eruptive young stars, found during our comprehensive multi-wavelength study of the young stellar population of the dark cloud L1340. These stars are as follows. (1) IRAS 02224+7227 (2MASS 02270555+7241167, HH 487 S) exhibited FUor-like spectrum in our low-resolution optical spectra. The available photometric data restrict its luminosity to 23 L_sun < L_bol < 59 L_sun. (2) 2MASS 02263797+7304575, identified as a classical T Tauri star during our H alpha survey, exhibited an EXor type brightening in 2005 November, at the time of the SDSS observations…
The Einstein spontaneous rates (A-coefficients) of Fe^+ lines have been computed by several authors, with results that differ from each other up to 40%. Consequently, models for line emissivities suffer from uncertainties which in turn affect the determination of the physical conditions at the base of line excitation. We provide an empirical determination of the A-coefficient ratios of bright [Fe II] lines, which would represent both a valid benchmark for theoretical computations and a reference for the physical interpretation of the observed lines. With the ESO-VLT X-shooter instrument betwee…
Among the emission-line stars, the classical Be stars known for their extreme properties are remarkable. The Be stars are B-type main sequence stars that have displayed at least once in their life emission lines in their spectrum. Beyond this phenomenological approach some progresses were made on the understanding of this class of stars. With high-technology techniques (interferometry, adaptive optics, multi-objects spectroscopy, spectropolarimetry, high-resolution photometry, etc) from different instruments and space mission such as the VLTI, CHARA, FLAMES, ESPADONS-NARVAL, COROT, MOST, SPITZ…
