The theory of $L^2$-spectral gaps for reversible Markov chains has been studied by many authors. In this paper we consider positive recurrent general state space Markov chains with stationary transition probabilities. Replacing the assumption of reversibility by a less strong one, we still obtain a simple necessary and sufficient condition for the spectral gap property of the associated Markov operator in terms of isoperimetric constant. Moreover, we define a new sequence of isoperimetric constants which provides a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of a spectral gap in a very general setting. Finally, these results are used to obtain simple sufficient conditions for the existence of a spectral gap in terms of the first and second order transition probabilities.
We propose some backward-forward martingale decompositions for functions of reversible Markov chains. These decompositions are used to prove the functional CLT for reversible Markov chains with asymptotically linear variance of partial sums. In this paper we study the spectral properties of Markov-operator on $L^{2}$-spaces. Lawler and Sokal (Trans. Amer. Math. Soc., 1988, 309, pp. 557-580) used isoperimetric constants for discrete and continuous time Markov chains to obtain a spectral gap at 1. For time discrete Markov chains this does not exclude periodic behavior. We define a new constant measuring the distance from periodicity and give necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of a global spectral gap in terms of this constant.
It is well known that for a strictly stationary, reversible, Harris recurrent Markov chain, the $ρ$-mixing condition is equivalent to geometric ergodicity and to a "spectral gap" condition. In this paper, we propose a variant of the embedding problem called the reversible embedding problem which has a deep physical and biochemical background and provide a complete solution to this new problem. It has been well known for some time that for strictly stationary Markov chains that are ``reversible'', that special symmetry provides special extra features in the mathematical theory. This paper here is primarily a purely expository review of some of the basic features of that special theory. The mathematical techniques employed in this review are relatively gentle, involving only some basic measure-theoretic probability theory.
We extend the Dirichlet principle to non-reversible Markov processes on countable state spaces. We present two variational formulas for the solution of the Poisson equation or, equivalently, for the capacity between two disjoint sets. As an application we prove a some recurrence theorems. A class of examples is constructed to show that for strictly stationary Markov chains that are reversible, the simultaneous mixing rates for the $ρ$-mixing and strong mixing ($α$-mixing) conditions can be fairly arbitrary, within certain unavoidable tight restrictions. The examples constructed here have the added property that the mixing rate for the absolute regularity ($β$-mixing) condition is within a constant factor of that for strong mixing.

In this paper, we investigate the functional central limit theorem for stochastic processes associated to partial sums of additive functionals of reversible Markov chains with general spate space, under the normalization standard deviation of partial sums. By proving a local limit theorem for higher-order transitions, we determine the time required for necklace chains to be close to stationarity. Because necklace chains, built by arranging identical smaller chains around a directed cycle, are not reversible, have little symmetry, do not have uniform stationary distributions, and can be nearly periodic, prior general bounds on rates of convergence of Markov chains either do not apply or give poor bounds. Necklace chains can serve as test cases for future techniques for bounding rates of convergence.
Markov chain Monte Carlo(MCMC) is a popular approach to sample from high dimensional distributions, and the asymptotic variance is a commonly used criterion to evaluate the performance. While most popular MCMC algorithms are reversible, there is a growing literature on the development and analyses of nonreversible MCMC. Chen and Hwang(2013) showed that a reversible MCMC can be improved by adding an antisymmetric perturbation. We take on a Random Matrix theory viewpoint to study the spectrum of certain reversible Markov chains in random environment. As the number of states tends to infinity, we consider the global behavior of the spectrum, and the local behavior at the edge, including the so called spectral gap. Results are obtained for two simple models with distinct limiting features. The first model is built on the complete graph while the second is a birth-and-death dynamics. Both models give rise to random matrices with non independent entries.

We develop Markov chain mixing time estimates for a class of Markov chains with restricted transitions. We assume transitions may occur along a cycle of $n$ nodes and on $n^γ$ additional edges, where $γ< 1$. We find that the mixing times of reversible Markov chains properly interpolate between the mixing times of the cycle with no added edges and of the cycle with $cn$ added edges (which is in turn a Small World Network model). We present results relating mixing times to the intersection time of branching random walk (BRW) in which the logarithm of the expected number of particles grows at rate of the spectral-gap $\mathrm{gap}$ . This is a finite state space analog of a critical branching process. Namely, we show that the maximal expected hitting time of a state by such a BRW is up to a universal constant larger than the $L_{\infty}$ mixing-time, whereas under transitivity the same is true for the intersection time of two independent such BRWs. We study two types of Metropolis-Hastings (MH) reversiblizations for non-reversible Markov chains with Markov kernel $P$. While the first type is the classical Metropolised version of $P$, we introduce a new self-adjoint kernel which captures the opposite transition effect of the first type, that we call the second MH kernel. We give the variational formulas for the asymptotic variance of discrete-time (non-reversible) Markov chains on general state space. The variational formulas provide many applications, extending the classical Peskun's comparison theorem to non-reversible Markov chains, and obtaining several comparison theorems between Markov chains with various perturbations.
For a Markov chain both the detailed balance condition and the cycle Kolmogorov condition are algebraic binomials. This remark suggests to study reversible Markov chains with the tool of Algebraic Statistics, such as toric statistical models. This paper presents an elementary proof of stochastic stability of a discrete-time reversible Markov chain starting from a Foster-Lyapunov drift condition. Besides its relative simplicity, there are two salient features of the proof: (i) it relies entirely on functional-analytic non-probabilistic arguments; and (ii) it makes explicit the connection between a Foster-Lyapunov function and Poincaré inequality. The proof is used to derive an explicit bound for the spectral gap. An extension to the non-reversible case is also presented.

A natural application in which such problems arise is in the control of Metropolis-Hastings type dynamics. We consider the problem of testing the identity of a reversible Markov chain against a reference from a single trajectory of observations. This article considers a class of metastable non-reversible diffusion processes whose invariant measure is a Gibbs measure associated with a Morse potential. In a companion paper [32], we proved the Eyring-Kramers formula for the corresponding class of metastable diffusion processes. We give an analogy between non-reversible Markov chains and electric networks much in the flavour of the classical reversible results originating from Kakutani, and later Kemény-Snell-Knapp and Kelly. Non-reversibility is made possible by a voltage multiplier -- a new electronic component.
