We present results relating mixing times to the intersection time of branching random walk (BRW) in which the logarithm of the expected number of particles grows at rate of the spectral-gap $\mathrm{gap}$ . This is a finite state space analog of a critical branching process. Namely, we show that the maximal expected hitting time of a state by such a BRW is up to a universal constant larger than the $L_{\infty}$ mixing-time, whereas under transitivity the same is true for the intersection time of two independent such BRWs.
Using the same methodology, we show that for a sequence of reversible Markov chains, the $L_{\infty}$ mixing-times $t_{\mathrm{mix}}^{(\infty)} $ are of smaller order than the maximal hitting times $t_{\mathrm{hit}}$ iff the product of the spectral-gap and $t_{\mathrm{hit}}$ diverges, by establishing the inequality $t_{\mathrm{mix}}^{(\infty)} \le \frac{1}{\mathrm{gap}}\log(et_{\mathrm{hit}} \cdot \mathrm{gap}) $. This resolves a conjecture of Aldous and Fill (Reversible Markov chains and random walks on graphs, Open Problem 14.12) asserting that under transitivity the condition that $ t_{\mathrm{hit}} \gg \frac{1}{\mathrm{gap}} $ implies mean-field behavior for the coalescing time of coalescing random walks.
Let $\left \{ Z_{n}, n\ge 0 \right \}$ be a supercritical branching process in an independent and identically distributed random environment $ξ=\left ( ξ_{n} \right )_{n\geq 0} $. In this paper, we get some deviation inequalities for $\ln \left (Z_{n+n_{0} } / Z_{n_{0} } \right ).$ And some applications are given for constructing confidence intervals.
Continuous state branching processes with immigration are studied. We are particularly concerned with the associated (non-symmetric) Dirichlet form. After observing that gamma distributions are only reversible distributions for this class of models, we prove that every generalized gamma convolution is a stationary distribution of the process with suitably chosen branching mechanism and with continuous immigration. For such non-reversible processes, the strong sector condition is discussed in terms of a characteristic called the Thorin measure. In addition, some connections with notion from non…
Generalized gamma distributions arise as limits in many settings involving random graphs, walks, trees, and branching processes. Peköz, Röllin, and Ross (2016, arXiv:1309.4183 [math.PR]) exploited characterizing distributional fixed point equations to obtain uniform error bounds for generalized gamma approximations using Stein's method. Here we show how monotone couplings arising with these fixed point equations can be used to obtain sharper tail bounds that, in many cases, outperform competing moment-based bounds and the uniform bounds obtainable with Stein's method. Applications are given to…
In this paper, we study some functional inequalities (such as Poincaré inequalities, logarithmic Sobolev inequalities, generalized Cheeger isoperimetric inequalities, transportation-information inequalities and transportation-entropy inequalities) for reversible nearest-neighbor Markov processes on a connected finite graph by means of (random) path method. We provide estimates of the involved constants.
We prove a version of McDiarmid's bounded differences inequality for Markov chains, with constants proportional to the mixing time of the chain. We also show variance bounds and Bernstein-type inequalities for empirical averages of Markov chains. In the case of non-reversible chains, we introduce a new quantity called the "pseudo spectral gap", and show that it plays a similar role for non-reversible chains as the spectral gap plays for reversible chains. Our techniques for proving these results are based on a coupling construction of Katalin Marton, and on spectral techniques due to Pascal Le…
Motivated by the probabilistic methods for nonlinear differential equations introduced by McKean (1975) for the Kolmogorov-Petrovski-Piskunov (KPP) equation, and by Le Jan and Sznitman (1997) for the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations, we identify a new class of stochastic cascade models, referred to as Doubly Stochastic Yule cascades. We establish non-explosion criteria under the assumption that the randomization of Yule intensities from generation to generation is by an ergodic time-reversible Markov process. In addition to the cascade models that arise in the analysis of certain determi…
Non-Gaussian concentration estimates are obtained for invariant probability measures of reversible Markov processes. We show that the functional inequalities approach combined with a suitable Lyapunov condition allows us to circumvent the classical Lipschitz assumption of the observables. Our method is general and covers diffusions as well as pure-jump Markov processes on unbounded spaces.
In this paper, some new forms of the Cheeger's inequalities are established for general (maybe unbounded) symmetric forms, the resulting estimates improve and extend the ones obtained by Lawler and Sokal (1988) for bounded jump processes. Furthermore, some existence criteria for spectral gap of general symmetric forms or general reversible Markov processes are presented, based on the Cheeger's inequalities and a relationship between the spectral gap and the first Dirichlet and Neumann eigenvalues on local region.
We prove a complete class theorem that characterizes \emph{all} stationary time reversible Markov processes whose finite dimensional marginal distributions (of all orders) are infinitely divisible. Aside from two degenerate cases (iid and constant), in both discrete and continuous time every such process with full support is a branching process with Poisson or Negative Binomial marginal univariate distributions and a specific bivariate distribution at pairs of times. As a corollary, we prove that every nondegenerate stationary integer valued processes constructed by the Markov thinning process…
Equivalence of the spectral gap, exponential integrability of hitting times and Lyapunov conditions are well known. We give here the correspondance (with quantitative results) for reversible diffusion processes. As a consequence, we generalize results of Bobkov in the one dimensional case on the value of the Poincaré constant for logconcave measures to superlinear potentials. Finally, we study various functional inequalities under different hitting times integrability conditions (polynomial, ...). In particular, in the one dimensional case, ultracontractivity is equivalent to a bounded Lyapuno…
Suppose X and Y are two independent irreducible Markov chains on n states. We consider the intersection time, which is the first time their trajectories intersect. We show for reversible and lazy chains that the total variation mixing time is always upper bounded by the expected intersection time taken over the worst starting states. For random walks on trees we show the two quantities are equivalent. We obtain an expression for the expected intersection time in terms of the eigenvalues for reversible and transitive chains. For such chains we also show that it is up to constants the geometric …
There are several works characterizing the total-variation mixing time of a reversible Markov chain in term of natural probabilistic concepts such as stopping times and hitting times. In contrast, there is no known analog for the $L_{2}$ mixing time, $τ_{2}$ (while there are sophisticated analytic tools to bound $ τ_2$, in general they do not determine $τ_2$ up to a constant factor and they lack a probabilistic interpretation). In this work we show that $τ_2$ can be characterized up to a constant factor using hitting times distributions. We also derive a new extremal characterization of the Lo…
The paper is devoted to establishing some general exponential inequalities for supermartingales. The inequalities improve or generalize many exponential inequalities of Bennett, Freedman, de la Peña, Pinelis and van de Geer. Moreover, our concentration inequalities also improve some known inequalities for sums of independent random variables. Applications associated with linear regressions, autoregressive processes and branching processes are provided. In particular, an interesting application of {de la Peña's} inequality to self-normalized deviations is also provided.
We analyze the explosion problem for a class of stochastic models introduced in Part I (arXiv:2103.06912), referred to as doubly stochastic Yule cascades. These models arise naturally in the construction of solutions to evolutionary PDEs as well as in purely probabilistic first passage percolation phenomena having a Markov-type statistical dependence, new for this context. Using cut-set arguments and a greedy algorithm, we respectively establish criteria for non-explosion and explosion without requiring the time-reversibility of the underlying branching Markov chain (a condition required in Pa…
We introduce a continuous-time Markov chain describing dynamic allelic partitions which extends the branching process construction of the Pitman sampling formula in Pitman (2006) and the birth-and-death process with immigration studied in Karlin and McGregor (1967), in turn related to the celebrated Ewens sampling formula. A biological basis for the scheme is provided in terms of a population of individuals grouped into families, that evolves according to a sequence of births, deaths and immigrations. We investigate the asymptotic behaviour of the chain and show that, as opposed to the birth-a…
Suppose that $(Z_n)_{n\geq0}$ is a supercritical branching process in independent and identically distributed random environment. The right tail function of the scaled growth rate for $(Z_n)_{n\geq0}$ is studied. The upper bounds for $\displaystyle\mathbb{P}\left[\frac{\log Z_n}{Mn}-μ\geq x\right]$ for any $x\geq3$ are obtained, by applying an extension of the Hoeffding type inequalities.
Motivated by kinetically constrained interacting particle systems (KCM), we consider a reversible coalescing and branching simple exclusion process on a general finite graph $G=(V,E)$ dual to the biased voter model on $G$. Our main goal are tight bounds on its logarithmic Sobolev constant and relaxation time, with particular focus on the delicate slightly supercritical regime in which the equilibrium density of particles tends to zero as $|V|\rightarrow \infty$. Our results allow us to recover very directly and improve to $\ell^p$-mixing, $p\ge 2$, and to more general graphs, the mixing time r…
In this paper we study the functional central limit theorem for stationary Markov chains with self-adjoint operator and general state space. We investigate the case when the variance of the partial sum is not asymptotically linear in n; and establish that conditional convergence in distribution of partial sums implies functional CLT. The main tools are maximal inequalities that are further exploited to derive conditions for tightness and convergence to the Brownian motion.
We consider a general discrete-time branching random walk on a countable set X. We relate local, strong local and global survival with suitable inequalities involving the first-moment matrix M of the process. In particular we prove that, while the local behavior is characterized by M, the global behavior cannot be completely described in terms of properties involving M alone. Moreover we show that locally surviving branching random walks can be approximated by sequences of spatially confined and stochastically dominated branching random walks which eventually survive locally if the (possibly f…
We introduce a new partial order on the class of stochastically monotone Markov kernels having a given stationary distribution $π$ on a given finite partially ordered state space $\mathcal{X}$. When $K\preceq L$ in this partial order we say that $K$ and $L$ satisfy a comparison inequality. We establish that if $K_1,\ldots,K_t$ and $L_1,\ldots,L_t$ are reversible and $K_s\preceq L_s$ for $s=1,\ldots,t$, then $K_1\cdots K_t\preceq L_1\cdots L_t$. In particular, in the time-homogeneous case we have $K^t\preceq L^t$ for every $t$ if $K$ and $L$ are reversible and $K\preceq L$, and using this we sh…
Let $S_N$ be the sum of vector-valued functions defined on a finite Markov chain. An analogue of the Bernstein--Hoeffding inequality is derived for the probability of large deviations of $S_N$ and relates the probability to the spectral gap of the Markov chain. Examples suggest that this inequality is better than alternative inequalities if the chain has a sufficiently large spectral gap and the function is high-dimensional.
We prove that every reversible Markov semigroup which satisfies a Poincaré inequality satisfies a matrix-valued Poincaré inequality for Hermitian $d\times d$ matrix valued functions, with the same Poincaré constant. This generalizes recent results [Aoun et al. 2019, Kathuria 2019] establishing such inequalities for specific semigroups and consequently yields new matrix concentration inequalities. The short proof follows from the spectral theory of Markov semigroup generators.
In this work, we develop a comparison procedure for the Modified log-Sobolev Inequality (MLSI) constants of two reversible Markov chains on a finite state space. Efficient comparison of the MLSI Dirichlet forms is a well known obstacle in the theory of Markov chains. We approach this problem by introducing a {\it regularized} MLSI constant which, under some assumptions, has the same order of magnitude as the usual MLSI constant yet is amenable for comparison and thus considerably simpler to estimate in certain cases. As an application of this general comparison procedure, we provide a sharp es…
We establish universal modified log-Sobolev inequalities for reversible Markov chains on the boolean lattice $\{0,1\}^n$, under the only assumption that the invariant law $π$ satisfies a form of negative dependence known as the stochastic covering property. This condition is strictly weaker than the strong Rayleigh property, and is satisfied in particular by all determinantal measures, as well as any product measure over the set of bases of a balanced matroid. In the special case where $π$ is $k-$homogeneous, our results imply the celebrated concentration inequality for Lipschitz functions due…
In the setting of reversible continuous-time Markov chains, the $CD_Υ$ condition has been shown recently to be a consistent analogue to the Bakry-Émery condition in the diffusive setting in terms of proving Li-Yau inequalities under a finite dimension term and proving the modified logarithmic Sobolev inequality under a positive curvature bound. In this article we examine the case where both is given, a finite dimension term and a positive curvature bound. For this purpose we introduce the $CD_Υ(κ,F)$ condition, where the dimension term is expressed by a so called $CD$-function $F$. We derive f…
In this paper, one investigates the following type of transportation-information $T_cI$ inequalities: $α(T_c(ν,μ))\le I(ν|μ)$ for all probability measures $ν$ on some metric space $(\XX, d)$, where $μ$ is a given probability measure, $T_c(ν,μ)$ is the transportation cost from $ν$ to $μ$ with respect to some cost function $c(x,y)$ on $\XX^2$, $I(ν|μ)$ is the Fisher-Donsker-Varadhan information of $ν$ with respect to $μ$ and $α: [0,\infty)\to [0,\infty]$ is some left continuous increasing function. Using large deviation techniques, it is shown that $T_cI$ is equivalent to some concentration ineq…
Given an irreducible discrete-time Markov chain on a finite state space, we consider the largest expected hitting time $T(α)$ of a set of stationary measure at least $α$ for $α\in(0,1)$. We obtain tight inequalities among the values of $T(α)$ for different choices of $α$. One consequence is that $T(α) \le T(1/2)/α$ for all $α< 1/2$. As a corollary we have that, if the chain is lazy in a certain sense as well as reversible, then $T(1/2)$ is equivalent to the chain's mixing time, answering a question of Peres. We furthermore demonstrate that the inequalities we establish give an almost everywher…
We investigate the metastable behavior of reversible Markov chains on possibly countable infinite state spaces. Based on a new definition of metastable Markov processes, we compute precisely the mean transition time between metastable sets. Under additional size and regularity properties of metastable sets, we establish asymptotic sharp estimates on the Poincaré and logarithmic Sobolev constant. The main ingredient in the proof is a capacitary inequality along the lines of V. Maz'ya that relates regularity properties of harmonic functions and capacities. We exemplify the usefulness of this new…
Using concentration inequalities, we give non-asymptotic confidence intervals for estimates obtained by Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) simulations, when using the approximation $\mathbb{E}_π f\approx (1/(N-t_0))\cdot \sum_{i=t_0+1}^N f(X_i)$. To allow the application of non-asymptotic error bounds in practice, here we state bounds formulated in terms of the spectral properties of the chain and the properties of $f$ and propose estimators of the parameters appearing in the bounds, including the spectral gap, mixing time, and asymptotic variance. We introduce a method for setting the burn-in ti…
A coupling method and an analytic one allow us to prove new lower bounds for the spectral gap of reversible diffusions on compact manifolds. Those bounds are based on the a notion of curvature of the diffusion, like the coarse Ricci curvature or the Bakry--Emery curvature-dimension inequalities. We show that when this curvature is nonnegative, its harmonic mean is a lower bound for the spectral gap.
We prove tail estimates for variables $\sum_i f(X_i)$, where $(X_i)_i$ is the trajectory of a random walk on an undirected graph (or, equivalently, a reversible Markov chain). The estimates are in terms of the maximum of the function $f$, its variance, and the spectrum of the graph. Our proofs are more elementary than other proofs in the literature, and our results are sharper. We obtain Bernstein and Bennett-type inequalities, as well as an inequality for subgaussian variables.
We study various classes of random processes defined on the regular tree $T_d$ that are invariant under the automorphism group of $T_d$. Most important ones are factor of i.i.d. processes (randomized local algorithms), branching Markov chains and a new class that we call typical processes. Using Glauber dynamics on processes we give a sufficient condition for a branching Markov chain to be factor of i.i.d. Typical processes are defined in a way that they create a correspondence principle between random $d$-reguar graphs and ergodic theory on $T_d$. Using this correspondence principle together …
In this paper we intend to give a comprehensive approach of functional inequalities for diffusion processes under some "curvature" assumptions. Our notion of curvature coincides with the usual $Γ_2$ curvature of Bakry and Emery in the case of a (reversible) drifted Brownian motion, but differs for more general diffusion processes. Our approach using simple coupling arguments together with classical stochastic tools, allows us to obtain new results, to recover and to extend already known results, giving in many situations explicit (though non optimal) bounds. In particular, we show new results …
We derive "quenched" subdiffusive lower bounds for the exit time tau(n) from a box of size n for the simple random walk on the planar invasion percolation cluster. The first part of the paper is devoted to proving an almost sure analog of H. Kesten's subdiffusivity theorem for the random walk on the incipient infinite cluster and the invasion percolation cluster using ideas of M. Aizenman, A. Burchard and A. Pisztora. The proof combines lower bounds on the instrinsic distance in these graphs and general inequalities for reversible Markov chains. In the second part of the paper, we present a sh…
Up to now, the nonparametric analysis of multidimensional continuous-time Markov processes has focussed strongly on specific model choices, mostly related to symmetry of the semigroup. While this approach allows to study the performance of estimators for the characteristics of the process in the minimax sense, it restricts the applicability of results to a rather constrained set of stochastic processes and in particular hardly allows incorporating jump structures. As a consequence, for many models of applied and theoretical interest, no statement can be made about the robustness of typical sta…
