We show that the maximal subgroup of the free profinite semigroup associated by Almeida to an irreducible sofic shift is a free profinite group, generalizing an earlier result of the second author for the case of the full shift (whose corresponding maximal subgroup is the maximal subgroup of the minimal ideal). A corresponding result is proved for certain relatively free profinite semigroups. We also establish some other analogies between the kernel of the free profinite semigroup and the $\J$-class associated to an irreducible sofic shift.
In 1987, Ornstein and Weiss discovered that the Bernoulli $2$-shift over the rank two free group factors onto the seemingly larger Bernoulli $4$-shift. With the recent creation of an entropy theory for actions of sofic groups (in particular free groups), their example shows the surprising fact that entropy can increase under factor maps. In order to better understand this phenomenon, we study a natural generalization of the Ornstein--Weiss map for countable groups. We relate the increase in entropy to the cost and to the first $\ell^2$-Betti number of the group. More generally, we study coboun…
A profinite group equipped with an expansive endomorphism is equivalent to a one-sided group shift. We show that these groups have a very restricted structure. More precisely, we show that any such group can be decomposed into a finite sequence of full one-sided group shifts and two finite groups.
We generalize the notion of self-similar groups of infinite tree automorphisms to allow for groups which are defined on a tree but do not act faithfully on it. The elements of such a group correspond to labeled trees which may be recognized by a tree automaton (e.g. Rabin, Büchi, etc.), or considered as elements of a tree shift (e.g. of finite type, sofic) as in symbolic dynamics. We give examples to show that the various classes of self-similar groups defined in this way do not coincide. As the main result, extending the classical result of Kitchens on one-dimensional group shifts, we provide…
Let $G$ be a group and let $V$ be an algebraic group over an algebraically closed field. We introduce algebraic group subshifts $Σ\subset V^G$ which generalize both the class of algebraic sofic subshifts of $V^G$ and the class of closed group subshifts over finite group alphabets. When $G$ is a polycyclic-by-finite group, we show that $V^G$ satisfies the descending chain condition and that the notion of algebraic group subshifts, the notion of algebraic group sofic subshifts, and that of algebraic group subshifts of finite type are all equivalent. Thus, we obtain extensions of well-known resul…
Let $\{G_i :i\in\N\}$ be a family of finite Abelian groups. We say that a subgroup $G\leq \prod\limits_{i\in \N}G_i$ is \emph{order controllable} if for every $i\in \mathbb{N}$ there is $n_i\in \mathbb{N}$ such that for each $c\in G$, there exists $c_1\in G$ satisfying that $c_{1|[1,i]}=c_{|[1,i]}$, $supp (c_1)\subseteq [1,n_i]$, and order$(c_1)$ divides order$(c_{|[1,n_i]})$. In this paper we investigate the structure of order controllable group codes. It is proved that if $G$ is an order controllable, shift invariant, group code over a finite abelian group $H$, then $G$ possesses a finite ca…
We show that the automorphism group of a one-dimensional full shift (the group of reversible cellular automata) does not satisfy the Tits alternative. That is, we construct a finitely-generated subgroup which is not virtually solvable yet does not contain a free group on two generators. We give constructions both in the two-sided case (spatially acting group $\Z$) and the one-sided case (spatially acting monoid $\N$, alphabet size at least eight). Lack of Tits alternative follows for several groups of symbolic (dynamical) origin: automorphism groups of two-sided one-dimensional uncountable sof…
We prove that the topological full group $[[X]]$ of a two-sided full shift $X = Σ^{\mathbb{Z}}$ contains every right-angled Artin group (also called a graph group). More generally, we show that the family of subgroups with "linear look-ahead" is closed under graph products. We show that the lamplighter group $\mathbb{Z}_2 \wr \mathbb{Z}$ embeds in $[[X]]$, and conjecture that it does not embed in $[[X]]$ with linear look-ahead. Generalizing the lamplighter group, we show that whenever $G$ acts with "unique moves" (or at least "move-$A$ithfully"), we have $A \wr G \leq [[X]]$ for finite abelian…
We prove a max-min theorem for weak containment in the context of algebraic actions. Namely, we show that given an algebraic action of $G$ on $X,$ there is a maximal, closed $G$-invariant subgroup $Y$ of $X$ so that the action of $G$ on $Y$ is weakly contained in a Bernoulli shift. This subgroup is also the minimal subgroup so that any action weakly contained in a Bernoulli shift is $G\curvearrowright X/Y$-ergodic "in the presence of $G\curvearrowright X$". We give several applications, including a major simplification of the proof that measure entropy equals topological entropy for principal …
Gao, Jackson, and Seward (see arXiv:1201.0513) proved that every countably infinite group $Γ$ admits a nonempty free subshift $X \subseteq \{0,1\}^Γ$. Furthermore, a theorem of Seward and Tucker-Drob (see arXiv:1402.4184) implies that every countably infinite group $Γ$ admits a free subshift $X \subseteq \{0,1\}^Γ$ that supports an invariant probability measure. Aubrun, Barbieri, and Thomassé (see arXiv:1507.03369) used the Lovász Local Lemma to give a short alternative proof of the Gao--Jackson--Seward theorem. Recently, Elek (see arXiv:1702.01631) followed another approach involving the Lová…
We study an abstract group of reversible Turing machines. In our model, each machine is interpreted as a homeomorphism over a space which represents a tape filled with symbols and a head carrying a state. These homeomorphisms can only modify the tape at a bounded distance around the head, change the state and move the head in a bounded way. We study three natural subgroups arising in this model: the group of finite-state automata, which generalizes the topological full groups studied in topological dynamics and the theory of orbit-equivalence; the group of oblivious Turing machines whose movem…
