To any positive contraction $Q$ on $\ell^2(W)$, there is associated a determinantal probability measure ${\mathbf P}^Q$ on $2^W$, where $W$ is a denumerable set. Let $Γ$ be a countable sofic finitely generated group and $G = (Γ, \mathsf{E})$ be a Cayley graph of $Γ$. We show that if $Q_1$ and $Q_2$ are two $Γ$-equivariant positive contractions on $\ell^2(Γ)$ or on $\ell^2(\mathsf{E})$ with $Q_1 \le Q_2$, then there exists a $Γ$-invariant monotone coupling of the corresponding determinantal probability measures witnessing the stochastic domination ${\bf P}^{Q_1} \preccurlyeq {\bf P}^{Q_2}$. In particular, this applies to the wired and free uniform spanning forests, which was known before only when $Γ$ is residually amenable. In the case of spanning forests, we also give a second more explicit proof, which has the advantage of showing an explicit way to create the free uniform spanning forest as a limit over a sofic approximation. Another consequence of our main result is to prove that all determinantal probability measures ${\bf P}^Q$ as above are ${\bar d}$-limits of finitely dependent processes. Thus, when $Γ$ is amenable, ${\bf P}^Q$ is isomorphic to a Bernoulli shift, which was known before only when $Γ$ is abelian. We also prove analogous results for sofic unimodular random rooted graphs.
We extend Lyons's tree entropy theorem to general determinantal measures. As a byproduct we show that the sofic entropy of an invariant determinantal measure does not depend on the chosen sofic approximation.
The entropy in dynamical systems was introduced by A. Kolmogorov. Initially dedicated to iterations of one finite measure preserving transformation, the notion was gradually generalized so as to encompass amenable group actions and topological actions. L. Bowen (2008) succeeded in breaking the non-amenable frontier by introducing the sofic entropy. This invariant provides the same services as the classical entropy for the measured actions of the sofic groups (a class which contains the residually finite groups). In 2010, D. Kerr et H. Li established a topological version together with a variat…
Sofic entropy is an invariant for probability-preserving actions of sofic groups. It was introduced a few years ago by Lewis Bowen, and shown to extend the classical Kolmogorov-Sinai entropy from the setting of amenable groups. Some parts of Kolmogorov-Sinai entropy theory generalize to sofic entropy, but in other respects this new invariant behaves less regularly. This paper explores conditions under which sofic entropy is additive for Cartesian products of systems. It is always subadditive, but the reverse inequality can fail. We define a new entropy-notion in terms of probability distributi…
We prove the explicit formula for sofic and Rokhlin entropy of actions arising from some class of Gibbs measures. It provides a new set of examples with sofic entropy independent of sofic approximations. It is particularilly interresting, since in non-amenable case Rokhlin entropy was computed only in case of Bernoulli actions and for some examples with zero Rokhlin entropy. As an example we show that our formula holds for the supercritical Ising model. We also establish a criterion for uniqueness of Gibbs measure by means of f-invariant.
Given a countable sofic group $Γ$, a finite alphabet $A$, a subshift $X \subseteq A^Γ$, and a potential $ϕ: X \to \mathbb{R}$, we give sufficient conditions on $X$ and $ϕ$ for expressing, in the uniqueness regime, the sofic entropy of the associated Gibbs measure $μ$ as the limit of the Shannon entropies of some suitable finite systems approximating $Γ\curvearrowright (X,μ)$. Next, we prove that if $μ$ satisfies strong spatial mixing, then the sofic pressure admits a formula in terms of the integral of a random information function with respect to any $Γ$-invariant Borel probability measure wi…
We prove the Bernoulli property for determinantal point processes on $ \mathbb{R}^d $ with translation-invariant kernels. For the determinantal point processes on $ \mathbb{Z}^d $ with translation-invariant kernels, the Bernoulli property was proved by Lyons and Steif and Shirai and Takahashi. As its continuum version, we prove an isomorphism between the translation-invariant determinantal point processes on $ \mathbb{R}^d $ with translation-invariant kernels and homogeneous Poisson point processes. For this purpose, we also prove the Bernoulli property for the tree representations of the dete…
We give a complete description of bounded radial Toeplitz operators on the Hilbert space associated with a Cayley tree. As an application, we give a complete classification of a rich family of determinantal point processes on Cayley trees whose correlation kernels and thus distributions are invariant under the action of the graph automorphisms of the Cayley trees.
We consider two-dimensional determinantal processes which are rotation-invariant and study the fluctuations of the number of points in disks. Based on the theory of mod-phi convergence, we obtain Berry-Esseen as well as precise moderate to large deviation estimates for these statistics. These results are consistent with the Coulomb gas heuristic from the physics literature. We also obtain functional limit theorems for the stochastic process $(\# D_r)_{r>0}$ when the radius $r$ of the disk $D_r$ is growing in different regimes. We present several applications to invariant determinantal process,…
A connection between representation of compact groups and some invariant ensembles of Hermitian matrices is described. We focus on two types of invariant ensembles which extend the Gaussian and the Laguerre Unitary ensembles. We study them using projections and convolutions of invariant probability measures on adjoint orbits of a compact Lie group. These measures are described by semiclassical approximation involving tensor and restriction mulltiplicities. We show that a large class of them are determinantal.
We study translation-invariant determinantal random point fields on the real line. We prove, under quite general conditions, that the smallest nearest spacings between the particles in a large interval have Poisson statistics as the length of the interval goes to infinity.
For the plane, sphere, and hyperbolic plane we consider the canonical invariant determinantal point processes with intensity rho dnu, where nu is the corresponding invariant measure. We show that as rho converges to infinity, after centering, these processes converge to invariant H1 noise. More precisely, for all functions f in the interesection of H1(nu) and L1(nu) the distribution of sum f(z) - rho/pi integral f dnu converges to Gaussian with mean 0 and variance given by ||f||_H1^2 / (4 pi).
We study expected Riesz s-energies and linear statistics of some determinantal processes on the sphere. In particular, we compute the expected Riesz and logarithmic energies of the determinantal processes given by the reproducing kernel of the space of spherical harmonics. This kernel defines the so called harmonic ensemble on the sphere. With these computations we improve previous estimates for the discrete minimal energy of configurations of points in the sphere. We prove a comparison result for Riesz 2-energies of points defined through determinantal point processes associated to isotropic …
Consider the zero set of the random power series f(z)=sum a_n z^n with i.i.d. complex Gaussian coefficients a_n. We show that these zeros form a determinantal process: more precisely, their joint intensity can be written as a minor of the Bergman kernel. We show that the number of zeros of f in a disk of radius r about the origin has the same distribution as the sum of independent {0,1}-valued random variables X_k, where P(X_k=1)=r^{2k}. Moreover, the set of absolute values of the zeros of f has the same distribution as the set {U_k^{1/2k}} where the U_k are i.i.d. random variables uniform in …
Let "mu" be a point process on a countable discrete space "X". Under assumption that "mu" is quasi-invariant with respect to any finitary permutation of "X", we describe a general scheme for constructing an equilibrium Kawasaki dynamics for which "mu" is a symmetrizing (and hence invariant) measure. We also exhibit a two-parameter family of point processes "mu" possessing the needed quasi-invariance property. Each process of this family is determinantal, and its correlation kernel is the kernel of a projection operator in the Hilbert space of square-summable functions on "X".
We study a class of rotation invariant determinantal ensembles in the complex plane; examples include the eigenvalues of Gaussian random matrices and the roots of certain families of random polynomials. The main result is a criteria for a central limit theorem to hold for angular statistics of the points. The proof exploits an exact formula relating the generating function of such statistics to the determinant of a perturbed Toeplitz matrix.
We extend results of R. Holley beyond the integer lattice to a large class of groups which includes free groups. In particular we show that a shift-invariant measure is Gibbs if and only if it is Glauber-invariant. Moreover, any shift-invariant measure converges weakly to the set of Gibbs measures when evolved under Glauber dynamics. These results are proven using a new notion of free energy density relative to a sofic approximation by homomorphisms. Any measure which minimizes free energy density is Gibbs.
The Gamma kernel is a projection kernel of the form (A(x)B(y)-B(x)A(y))/(x-y), where A and B are certain functions on the one-dimensional lattice expressed through Euler's Gamma function. The Gamma kernel depends on two continuous parameters; its principal minors serve as the correlation functions of a determinantal probability measure P defined on the space of infinite point configurations on the lattice. As was shown earlier (Borodin and Olshanski, Advances in Math. 194 (2005), 141-202; arXiv:math-ph/0305043), P describes the asymptotics of certain ensembles of random partitions in a limit r…
We consider the correlations of invariant observables for the $O(N)$ and $\mathbb{C}\mathbb{P}^{N-1}$ models at zero coupling, namely, with respect to the natural group-invariant measure. In the limit where one takes a large power of the integrand, we show that these correlations become inverse powers of the Kirchhoff polynomial. The latter therefore provide a simplified toy model for the investigation of inequalities between products of correlations. Properties such as ferromagnetic behavior for spin model correlations correspond, in this asymptotic limit, to log-ultramodularity which is a co…
We consider unimodular random rooted trees (URTs) and invariant forests in Cayley graphs. We show that URTs of bounded degree are the same as the law of the component of the root in an invariant percolation on a regular tree. We use this to give a new proof that URTs are sofic, a result of Elek. We show that ends of invariant forests in the hyperbolic plane converge to ideal boundary points. We also prove that uniform integrability of the degree distribution of a family of finite graphs implies tightness of that family for local convergence, also known as random weak convergence.
The infinite-dimensional unitary group U(infinity) is the inductive limit of growing compact unitary groups U(N). In this paper we solve a problem of harmonic analysis on U(infinity) stated in the previous paper math/0109193. The problem consists in computing spectral decomposition for a remarkable 4-parameter family of characters of U(infinity). These characters generate representations which should be viewed as analogs of nonexisting regular representation of U(infinity). The spectral decomposition of a character of U(infinity) is described by the spectral measure which lives on an infinite-…
We consider a Markov evolution of lozenge tilings of a quarter-plane and study its asymptotics at large times. One of the boundary rays serves as a reflecting wall. We observe frozen and liquid regions, prove convergence of the local correlations to translation-invariant Gibbs measures in the liquid region, and obtain new discrete Jacobi and symmetric Pearcey determinantal point processes near the wall. The model can be viewed as the one-parameter family of Plancherel measures for the infinite-dimensional orthogonal group, and we use this interpretation to derive the determinantal formula for …
