We show that whenever a 4-dimensional theory with N particle species emerges as a consistent low energy description of a 3-brane embedded in an asymptotically-flat (4+d)-dimensional space, the holographic scale of high-dimensional gravity sets the strong coupling scale of the 4D theory. This connection persists in the limit in which gravity can be consistently decoupled. We demonstrate this effect for orbifold planes, as well as for the solitonic branes and string theoretic D-branes. In all cases the emergence of a 4D strong coupling scale from bulk holography is a persistent phenomenon. The effect turns out to be insensitive even to such extreme deformations of the brane action that seemingly shield 4D theory from the bulk gravity effects. A well understood example of such deformation is given by large 4D Einstein term in the 3-brane action, which is known to suppress the strength of 5D gravity at short distances and change the 5D Newton's law into the four-dimensional one. Nevertheless, we observe that the scale at which the scalar polarization of an effective 4D-graviton becomes strongly coupled is again set by the bulk holographic scale. The effect persist in the gravity decoupling limit, when the full theory reduces to a 4D system in which the only memory about the high-dimensional holography is encoded in the strong coupling scale. The observed intrinsic connection between the high-dimensional flat space holography and 4D strong coupling suggests a possible guideline for generalization of AdS/CFT duality to other systems.
We show how D-instanton corrections modify the dilaton-axion profile emitted by an O7/D7 system turning it into the non-singular F-theory background which corresponds to the effective coupling on a D3 probe.
In a four-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=2$ superconformal quiver theory with gauge group $\mathrm{SU}(N)\times\mathrm{SU}(N)$ and bi-fundamental matter, we analytically obtain the exact strong-coupling behavior of the normalized 3-point correlators of single-trace scalar operators in the large-$N$ limit using localization techniques. We then obtain the same strong-coupling behavior from the holographic dual using the AdS/CFT correspondence at the supergravity level. This agreement confirms the validity of the analytic strong-coupling results and of the holographic correspondence in a non-maximally …
We compute finite 't Hooft coupling corrections to observables related to charged quantities in a strongly coupled $\mathcal{N}=4$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills plasma. The coupling corrected equations of motion of gauge fields are explicitly derived and differ from findings of previous works, which contained several small errors with large impact. As a consequence the $\mathcal{O}(γ)$-corrections to the observables considered, including the conductivity, quasinormal mode frequencies, in and off equilibrium spectral density and photoemission rates, become much smaller. This suggests that infinite …
We consider linearised Vasiliev's equations around the background AdS field in three dimensions for the scalar-scalar-higher spin field correlation function. Relating this with the higher spin field determined in the metric formulation allows determination of the corresponding coupling coefficient. The result agrees with the analogous computation for the spin three field.
We consider the vacuum partition function of a 4d scalar QFT in a curved background as function of bare marginal and relevant couplings. A local UV cutoff $Λ(x)$ transforming under Weyl rescalings allows to construct Weyl invariant kinetic terms including Wilsonian cutoff functions. The local cutoff can be absorbed completely by a rescaling of the metric and the bare couplings. The vacuum partition function satisfies consistency conditions which follow from the Abelian nature of local redefinitions of the cutoff, and which differ from Weyl rescalings. These imply a gradient flow for beta funct…
We clarify the relationship between probe analysis of the supergravity dual and the large-N solution of the localization matrix model for the planar N = 2* super-Yang-Mills theory. A formalism inspired by supergravity allows us to systematically solve the matrix model at strong coupling. Quite surprisingly, we find that quantum phase transitions, known to occur in the N = 2* theory, start to be visible at the third order of the strong-coupling expansion and thus constitute a perturbative phenomenon on the string worldsheet.
In the background of a charged AdS black hole, we consider a Dirac particle endowed with an arbitrary magnetic dipole moment. For non-zero charge and dipole coupling of the bulk fermion, we find that the dual boundary theory can be plagued with superluminal modes. Requiring consistency of the dual CFT amounts to constraining the strength of the dipole coupling by an upper bound. We briefly discuss the implications of our results for the physics of holographic non-Fermi liquids.
Using supersymmetric localization we compute the free energy and BPS Wilson loop vacuum expectation values for planar maximally supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory on $S^d$ in the strong coupling limit for $2\leq d<6$. The same calculation can also be performed in supergravity using the recently found spherical brane solutions. We find excellent agreement between the two sets of results. This constitutes a non-trivial precision test of holography in a non-conformal setting. The free energy of maximal SYM on $S^6$ diverges in the strong coupling limit which might signify the onset of little string…
We consider $\mathcal{N}=2$ superconformal quiver gauge theories in four dimensions and evaluate the chiral/anti-chiral correlators of single-trace operators. We show that it is convenient to form particular twisted and untwisted combinations of these operators suggested by the dual holographic description of the theory. The various twisted sectors are orthogonal and the correlators in each sector have always the same structure, as we show at the lowest orders in perturbation theory with Feynman diagrams. Using localization we then map the computation to a matrix model. In this way we are able…
We find the gravity dual of $\mathcal{N}=2^*$ super-Yang-Mills theory on $S^4$ and use holography to calculate the universal contribution to the corresponding $S^4$ free energy at large $N$ and large 't Hooft coupling. Our result matches the expression previously computed using supersymmetric localization in the field theory. This match represents a non-trivial precision test of holography in a non-conformal, Euclidean signature setting.
The form of higher-spin current interactions in $AdS_4$ is derived from the full nonlinear higher-spin equations in the sector of Weyl 0-forms. The coupling constant in front of spin-one currents built from scalars and spinors as well as Yukawa coupling are determined explicitly. Couplings of all other higher-spin current interactions are determined implicitly. All couplings are shown to be independent of the phase parameter of the nonlinear higher-spin theory. The proper holographic dependence of the vertex on the higher-spin phase parameter is shown to result from the boundary conditions on …
The entropic force has been recently argued to be responsible for dissociation of heavy quarkonia. In this paper, we analyze $R^2$ corrections and $R^4$ corrections to the entropic force, respectively. It is shown that for $R^2$ corrections, increasing $λ_{GB}$ (Gauss-Bonnet factor) leads to increasing the entropic force. While for $R^4$ corrections, increasing $λ$ ('t Hooft coupling) leads to decreasing the entropic force. Also, we discuss how the entropic force changes with the shear viscosity to entropy density ratio, $η/s$, at strong coupling.
We study 4-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=2$ superconformal quiver gauge theories obtained with an orbifold projection from $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM, and compute the 2- and 3-point correlation functions among chiral/anti-chiral single-trace scalar operators and the corresponding structure constants. Exploiting localization, we map the computation to an interacting matrix model and obtain expressions for the correlators and the structure constants that are valid for any value of the 't Hooft coupling in the planar limit of the theory. At strong coupling, these expressions simplify and allow us to extract …
In this article we study the algebra generated by the holographically reconstructed cubic couplings for the type A minimal bosonic higher-spin theory on AdS$_{d+1}$, which were recently extracted from the free scalar $O(N)$ model. We demonstrate that it is equal to the unique higher-spin algebra for bosonic totally symmetric higher-spin fields in generic dimensions. This provides an explicit check of the holographic reconstruction and of the duality between higher-spin theories and the free $O(N)$ model in general dimensions, extending the result of Giombi and Yin in AdS$_4$. For completeness,…
The conjectured holographic duality between vector models with quartic interaction and higher-spin field theory in the bulk is reviewed, with emphasis on some versions and generalisations (higher dimensions, beyond the singlet sector, etc) which have not been much investigated yet. The strongest form of the conjecture assumes that it holds for any (not necessarily large) number of massless scalar fields and for any value of the coupling constant. Since the quartic interaction is of double-trace type, the exact duality (for any value of the coupling constant) automatically follows from its vali…
We study in detail the relationship between strong subadditivity for a boundary field theory and energy conditions for its bulk dual in 2+1 dimensions. We provide a discussion of known facts and new results organized from the simplest case of a static system with collinear intervals to a time dependent one in a generic configuration, with particular focus on the holographic geometric description.
The notion of non-Hermitian PT symmetric quantum theory has recently been generalized to the gauge/gravity duality. We study the evolution of such non-Hermitian holographic field theories when the couplings are varied with time with particular emphasis on the question non-unitary time vs. unitary time evolution. We show that a non-unitary time evolution in the dual quantum theory corresponds to a violation of the Null Energy Condition (NEC) in the bulk of the asymptotically AdS spacetime. We find that upon varying the non-Hermitian coupling the horizon of a bulk AdS black hole shrinks. On the …
We precisely reproduce the perimeter law obeyed by Wilson loops on large spatial contours in planar N=2 SYM at strong coupling, as recently deduced using localization, by means of a dual holographic model. The relevant supergravity background is sourced by D5-branes wrapped on a two-sphere in a Calabi-Yau two-manifold. Thus, localization and holography are cross-checked, for the first time, in a non conformal context where the gravity background is not asymptotically Anti de Sitter and the dual gauge theory has a logarithmically running coupling. We also notice that the same cross-check can be…
The correspondences proposed previously between higher spin gauge theories and free singleton field theories were recently extended into a more complete picture by Klebanov and Polyakov in the case of the minimal bosonic theory in D=4 to include the strongly coupled fixed point of the 3d O(N) vector model. Here we propose an N=1 supersymmetric version of this picture. We also elaborate on the role of parity in constraining the bulk interactions, and in distinguishing two minimal bosonic models obtained as two different consistent truncations of the minimal N=1 model that retain the scalar or t…
We holographically investigate the effects of a dipole coupling between a fermion field and a $U(1)$ gauge field on the dual fermionic sector in the charged gravity bulk with hyperscaling violation. We analytically study the features of the ultraviolet and infrared Green's functions of the dual fermionic system and we show that as the dipole coupling and the hyperscaling violation exponent are varied, the fluid possess Fermi, marginal Fermi, non-Fermi liquid phases and also an additional Mott insulating phase. We find that the increase of the hyperscaling violation exponent which effectively r…
We consider the coupling of a free scalar to a single-trace operator of a large N CFT in d dimensions. This is equivalent to a double-trace deformation coupling two primary operators of the CFT, in the limit when one of the two saturates the unitarity bound. At leading order, the RG-flow has a non-trivial fixed point where multiplets recombine. We show this phenomenon in field theory, and provide the holographic dual description. Free scalars correspond to singleton representations of the AdS algebra. The double-trace interaction is mapped to a boundary condition mixing the singleton with the …
We find a new supersymmetric solution of type IIB supergravity which is holographically dual to the planar limit of the four-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=2^*$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory on $S^4$. We study a probe fundamental string in this background which is dual to a supersymmetric Wilson loop in the $\mathcal{N}=2^*$ theory. Using holography we calculate the expectation value of this line operator to leading order in the 't Hooft coupling. The result is a non-trivial function of the mass parameter of the $\mathcal{N}=2^*$ theory that precisely matches the result from supersymmetric locali…
We argue that vacua of string theory which asymptote at weak coupling to linear dilaton backgrounds are holographic. The full string theory in such vacua is ``dual'' to a theory without gravity in fewer dimensions. The dual theory is generically not a local quantum field theory. Excitations of the string vacuum, which can be studied in the weak coupling region using worldsheet methods, give rise to observables in the dual theory. An interesting example is string theory in the near-horizon background of parallel NS5-branes, the CHS model, which is dual to the decoupled NS5-brane theory (``littl…
We consider operators in ${\cal N}=4$ super Yang-Mills theory dual to closed string states propagating on a class of LLM geometries. The LLM geometries we consider are specified by a boundary condition that is a set of black rings on the LLM plane. When projected to the LLM plane, the closed strings are polygons with all corners lying on the outer edge of a single ring. The large $N$ limit of correlators of these operators receives contributions from non-planar diagrams even for the leading large $N$ dynamics. Our interest in these fluctuations is because a previous weak coupling analysis argu…
We provide a brief summary of a method to calculate improvements to the Veneziano Amplitude, creating sub-leading non-linearities in the Regge trajectory of states. We formulate it as an extension of a computation by Makeenko and Olesen. We begin in a confining gauge theory coupled to matter, rewriting the meson scattering amplitude as a specific path integral over shapes and sizes of closed Wilson loops using the worldline formalism. We then prescribe how to further the computation at strong coupling by employing holography, which provides a prescription for the expectation value of these Wil…
We examine various aspects of the conjectured duality between warped AdS$_5$ geometries with boundary branes and strongly coupled (broken) conformal field theories coupled to dynamical gravity. We also examine compactifications with 5-d gauge fields, in which case the holographic dual is a broken CFT weakly coupled to dynamical gauge fields in addition to gravity. The holographic picture is used to clarify a number of important phenomenological issues in these and related models, including the questions of black hole production, radius stabilization, early universe cosmology, and gauge couplin…
Gauge theories living on stacks of D7-branes are holographically related to IIB gravitational backgrounds with a varying axion-dilaton field (F-theory). The axion-dilaton field is generated by D7, O7 and D-instanton sources and can be written in terms of the chiral correlators of the eight dimensional gauge theory living on the D7-branes. Using localization techniques, we prove that the same correlators determine the gauge coupling of the four-dimensional N=2 supersymmetric SU(2) gauge theories living on the elementary D3-brane which probes the F-theory geometries.
We consider a holographic study of coupling dependent gravitational waves produced by the cosmic first order QCD phase transition at finite baryochemical potential. In the dual description, the first-order QCD phase transition corresponds to the first-order Hawking-Page phase transition in Gauss-Bonnet gravity. At intermediate coupling, we obtain key quantities characterizing the gravitational wave energy density spectrum. We then find that the gravitational waves might be detected for sufficiently large Gauss-Bonnet coupling, while sound waves play an important role in the spectrum. We also c…
We present an extended version of a recently proposed semi-holographic model for heavy-ion collisions, which includes self-consistent couplings between the Yang-Mills fields of the Color Glass Condensate framework and an infrared AdS/CFT sector, such as to guarantee the existence of a conserved energy-momentum tensor for the combined system that is local in space and time, which we also construct explicitly. Moreover, we include a coupling of the topological charge density in the glasma to the same of the holographic infrared CFT. The semi-holographic approach makes it possible to combine CGC …
We consider the brane-world in the holographic point of view. Bearing the realistic models in mind, the bulk massless scalar field is introduced. First of all, we find the constraint on the coupling of the scalar fields with the matter(not holographic CFT) on the brane. We show that the traceless part of the energy-momentum tensor of holographic CFT is a part of the bulk Weyl tensor. The trace part which comes from the trace-anomaly is corresponding to the $ρ^2$-term appeared in the generalized FRW equation in the brane-world.
De Boer et. al. have found an asymptotic equivalence between the Hamilton-Jacobi equations for supergravity in (d+1)-dimensional asymptotic anti-de Sitter space, and the Callan-Symanzik equations for the dual d-dimensional perturbed conformal field theory. We discuss this correspondence in Lorentzian signature. We construct a gravitational dual of the generating function of correlation functions between initial and final states, in accordance with the construction of Marolf, and find a class of states for which the result has a classical supergravity limit. We show how the data specifying the …
In this paper we use lattice simulation to study four dimensional $N=4$ super Yang-Mills (SYM) theory. We have focused on the three color theory on lattices of size $12^4$ and for 't Hooft couplings up to $λ=40.0$. Our lattice action is based on a discretization of the Marcus or GL twist of $N=4$ SYM and retains one exact supersymmetry for non-zero lattice spacing. We show that lattice theory exists in a single non-Abelian Coulomb phase for all 't Hooft couplings. Furthermore the static potential we obtain from correlators of Polyakov lines is in good agreement with that obtained from holograp…
From the AdS/CFT correspondence, the effects of charge and finite 't Hooft coupling correction on the thermal width of a heavy quarkonium are investigated. To study the charge effect, we consider Maxwell charge which is interpreted as quark medium. In the case of finite 't Hooft coupling corrections, $\mathcal{R}^4$ terms and Gauss-Bonnet gravity have been considered, respectively. It is shown that these corrections affect the thermal width. It is also argued that by decreasing the 't Hooft coupling, the thermal width becomes effectively smaller. Interestingly, this is similar to analogous cal…
We consider gauge/gravity correspondence between maximally supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory in ($p+1$) dimensions and superstring theory on the near-horizon limit of the D$p$-brane solution. The string-frame metric is AdS$_{p+1}\times S^{8-p}$ times a Weyl factor, and there is no conformal symmetry except for $p=3$. In a previous paper by one of the present authors, the free-field result of gauge theory has been reproduced from string theory for a particular operator which has angular momentum along $S^{8-p}$. In this paper, we extend this result to operators which have angular momenta along A…

Naive dimensional analysis (NDA) is a widely used ansatz to estimate coupling constants among composite states emerging from dynamics of a strongly coupled gauge theory. However, the validity of NDA is still unclear because of the difficulty in calculating these quantities in strongly coupled theories. We examine the NDA ansatz using gauge/string duality, by estimating glueball coupling constants from gravitational description. The NDA scaling rule for coupling constants of some types of glueballs is verified and extended by both generic estimation and numerical calculations. The scaling rule …
We study the correlators of two circular Wilson loops of different radii at strong coupling. In our setup one Wilson loop is located inside the other. We use holography to calculate the connected two-point function. Both an AdS background and a confining background are considered. As the computation for the confining case cannot be carried out analytically we solve the problem numerically. In the AdS case our results agree with similar holographic calculations. In the case of a confining background we find an asymptotic area law, in agreement with the result of the lattice strong coupling expa…
We revisit the idea that the quantum dynamics of open strings ending on $N$ D3-branes in the large $N$ limit can be described at large `t Hooft coupling by classical closed string theory in the background created by the D3-branes in asymptotically flat spacetime. We study the resulting thermodynamics and compute the Hagedorn temperature and other properties of the D3-brane worldvolume theory in this regime. We also consider the theory in which the D3-branes are replaced by negative branes and show that its thermodynamics is well behaved. We comment on the idea that this theory can be thought o…
We give strong numerical evidence that a self-interacting probe scalar field in AdS, with only a few modes turned on initially, will undergo fast thermalization only if it is above a certain energetic threshold. Below the threshold the energy stays close to constant in a few modes for a very long time instead of cascading quickly. This indicates the existance of a Strong Stochasticity Threshold (SST) in holography. The idea of SST is familiar from certain statistical mechanical systems, and we suggest that it exists also in AdS gravity. This would naturally reconcile the generic non-linear ins…
Holographic superconductors containing a non-minimal derivative coupling for scalar field in a regular phantom plane symmetric black hole have been considered. We show that the parameter of the regular black hole $b$ as well as the non-minimal derivative coupling parameter $η$ affect the formation of the condensate as well as the conductivity in the superconductor. Moreover, $b$ has a critical value in which the critical temperature $T_c$ increases without a bound. We argue that an unlimited critical temperature is an evidence that high $T_c$ superconductor must be related to the absence of a …
This paper proves that if eternal neutral black holes satisfy some general conditions and matter fields only appear in the outside of the Killing horizon, the strong energy condition is a sufficient condition to insure that the vacuum Schwarzschild black hole has the fastest action growth of the same total energy. This result is consistent with the bound of computational complexity growth rate and gives a strong evidence for the holographic complexity-action conjecture.
We show how the $T^2$ deformation of large $N$, holographic conformal field theories arise from coupling them to the quadratic mass term of ghost-free massive gravity. We then show that in a certain approximation, the equations arising from the variation of the background frame field are those of the Randall--Sundrum II scenario.
The mixing of graviphotons and dark brane photons to the Standard Model hypercharge is analyzed in full generality, in weakly-coupled string theory. Both the direct mixing as well as effective terms that provide mixing after inclusion of SM corrections are estimated to lowest order. The results are compared with Effective Field Theory (EFT) couplings, originating in a hidden large-N theory coupled to the SM. The string theory mixing terms are typically subleading compared with the generic EFT couplings. The case where the hidden theory is a holographic theory is also analyzed, providing also s…
In this paper we generalize the idea of species holography to the case of Cascading DGP theories. Essence of the phenomenon is that a 4D field theory with N particle species coupled to a high-dimensional bulk gravity propagating solely a graviton becomes strongly coupled at the scale that would be the quantum gravity scale of the bulk theory if all the species were propagating in the bulk. We will see that both, crossover scales and Vainshtein scales, can be understood as holographic scales in the above sense. We confirm our results by an explicit effective field theoretic derivation of these …
We study the holographic non-relativistic fermions in the presence of bulk dipole coupling in charged dilatonic black hole background. We explore the nontrivial effects of the bulk dipole coupling, the fermion charge as well as the dilaton field on the flat band, the Fermi surface and the emergence of the gap by investigating the spectral function of the non-relativistic fermion system. In particular, we find that the presence of the flat band in the non-relativistic case will suppress the Fermi momentum. Besides, we observe that the effect of the dipole coupling in the dilaton gravity is more…
The sparse version of the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model reproduces essential features of the original SYK model while reducing the number of disorder parameters. In this paper, we propose a further simplification of the model which we call the binary-coupling sparse SYK model. We set the nonzero couplings to be $\pm 1$, rather than being sampled from a continuous distribution such as Gaussian. Remarkably, this simplification turns out to be an improvement: the binary-coupling model exhibits strong correlations in the spectrum, which is the important feature of the original SYK model that leads…
We study the effects of quenched one-dimensional disorder on the holographic Weyl semimetal quantum phase transition (QPT), with a particular focus on the quantum critical region. We observe the smearing of the sharp QPT linked to the appearance of rare regions at the horizon where locally the order parameter is non-zero. We discuss the role of the disorder correlation and we compare our results to expectations from condensed matter theory at weak coupling. We analyze also the interplay of finite temperature and disorder. Within the quantum critical region we find indications for the presence …
We investigate a dilaton gravity model in AdS$_2$ proposed by Almheiri and Polchinski and develop a 1d effective description in terms of a dynamical boundary time with a Schwarzian derivative action. We show that the effective model is equivalent to a 1d version of Liouville theory, and investigate its dynamics and symmetries via a standard canonical framework. We include the coupling to arbitrary conformal matter and analyze the effective action in the presence of possible sources. We compute commutators of local operators at large time separation, and match the result with the time shift due…
We study the magnetic effect in strongly interacting system with two conserved currents near the quantum critical point (QCP). For this purpose, we introduce the hyper-scaling violation geometry with the blackhole. Considering the perturbation near the background geometry, we compute the transport coefficients using holographic methods. We calculated the magneto-transport for general QCP and discuss the special point $(z,θ)=(3/2,1)$ where the data of Dirac material were well-described previously.
As a quantum theory of gravity, Matrix theory should provide a realization of the holographic principle, in the sense that a holographic theory should contain one binary degree of freedom per Planck area. We present evidence that Bekenstein's entropy bound, which is related to area differences, is manifest in the plane wave matrix model. If holography is implemented in this way, we predict crossover behavior at strong coupling when the energy exceeds N^2 in units of the mass scale.
We argue that "stringy" effects in a putative gravity-dual picture for SYK-like models are related to the branching time, a kinetic coefficient defined in terms of the retarded kernel. A bound on the branching time is established assuming that the leading diagrams are ladders with thin rungs. Thus, such models are unlikely candidates for sub-AdS holography. In the weak coupling limit, we derive a relation between the branching time, the Lyapunov exponent, and the quasiparticle lifetime using two different approximations.
The light-front holographic mapping of classical gravity in AdS space, modified by a positive-sign dilaton background, leads to a nonperturbative effective coupling $α_s^{AdS}(Q^2)$. It agrees with hadron physics data extracted from different observables, such as the effective charge defined by the Bjorken sum rule, as well as with the predictions of models with built-in confinement and lattice simulations. It also displays a transition from perturbative to nonperturbative conformal regimes at a momentum scale $ \sim 1$ GeV. The resulting $β$ function appears to capture the essential character…
We investigate effects of strong correlation on the surface state of topological insulator (TI). We argue that electrons in the regime of crossover from weak anti-localization to weak localization, are strongly correlated and calculate magneto-transport coefficients of TI using gauge gravity principle. Then, we examine, magneto-conductivity (MC) formula and find excellent agreement with the data of chrome doped Bi$_{2}$Te$_{3}$ in the crossover regime. We also find that cusp-like peak in MC at low doping is absent, which is natural since quasi-particles disappear due to the strong correlation.
The combination of Anti-de Sitter space (AdS) methods with light-front (LF) holography provides a remarkably accurate first approximation for the spectra and wavefunctions of meson and baryon light-quark bound states. The resulting bound-state Hamiltonian equation of motion in QCD leads to relativistic light-front wave equations in terms of an invariant impact variable $ζ$ which measures the separation of the quark and gluonic constituents within the hadron at equal light-front time. These equations of motion in physical space-time are equivalent to the equations of motion which describe the p…
