We consider operators in ${\cal N}=4$ super Yang-Mills theory dual to closed string states propagating on a class of LLM geometries. The LLM geometries we consider are specified by a boundary condition that is a set of black rings on the LLM plane. When projected to the LLM plane, the closed strings are polygons with all corners lying on the outer edge of a single ring. The large $N$ limit of correlators of these operators receives contributions from non-planar diagrams even for the leading large $N$ dynamics. Our interest in these fluctuations is because a previous weak coupling analysis argues that the net effect of summing the huge set of non-planar diagrams, is a simple rescaling of the 't Hooft coupling. We carry out some nontrivial checks of this proposal. Using the $su(2|2)^2$ symmetry we determine the two magnon $S$-matrix and demonstrate that it agrees, up to two loops, with a weak coupling computation performed in the CFT. We also compute the first finite size corrections to both the magnon and the dyonic magnon by constructing solutions to the Nambu-Goto action that carry finite angular momentum. These finite size computations constitute a strong coupling confirmation of the proposal.
In this paper we study the one-loop dilatation operator of the full scalar field sector of Leigh-Strassler deformed N=4 SYM theory. In particular we map it onto a spin chain and find the parameter values for which the Reshetikhin integrability criteria are fulfilled. Some years ago Roiban found an integrable subsector, consisting of two holomorphic scalar fields, corresponding to the XXZ model. He was pondering about the existence of a subsector which would form generalisation of that model to an integrable su_q(3) model. Later Berenstein and Cherkis added one more holomorphic field and showed…
The zero curvature representation of Zakharov and Shabat has been generalized recently to higher dimensions and has been used to construct non-linear field theories which either are integrable or contain integrable submodels. The Skyrme model, for instance, contains an integrable subsector with infinitely many conserved currents, and the simplest Skyrmion with baryon number one belongs to this subsector. Here we use a related method, based on the geometry of target space, to construct a whole class of theories which are either integrable or contain integrable subsectors (where integrability me…
Recent progress in holographic correspondence uncovered remarkable relations between key characteristics of the theories on both sides of duality and certain integrable models. In this note we revisit the problem of the role of certain invariants in low-dimensional holography. As motivating example we consider first the entanglement entropy in 2d CFT and projective invariants. Next we consider higher projective invariants and suggest generalization to higher spin theories. Quadratic in invariants deformations is considered and conjectured to play role in low-dimensional higher spin holography.
Field theories on anti-de Sitter (AdS) space can be studied by realizing them as low-energy limits of AdS vacua of string/M theory. In an appropriate limit, the field theories decouple from the rest of string/M theory. Since these vacua are dual to conformal field theories (CFTs), this relates some of the observables of these field theories on AdS to a subsector of the dual CFTs. We exemplify this `rigid holography' by studying in detail the 6d N=(2,0) A_{K-1} superconformal field theory (SCFT) on AdS_5xS^1, with equal radii for AdS_5 and for S^1. We choose specific boundary conditions preserv…
Classical world-sheet string theory has recently been shown to be nonintegrable and chaotic in various confining string theory backgrounds -- the AdS soliton background in particular. In this paper we study a minisuperspace quantization of the theory and look at properties of the spectrum like the distribution of level spacing, which are indicative of quantum order or chaos. In the quantum spectrum we find a gradual transition from chaotic (Wigner GOE) to integrable (Poisson) regime as we look at higher energies. This is expected since our system is integrable asymptotically, and at higher ene…
We study rotating strings with multiple spins in the background of $AdS_5\times T^{1,1}$, which is dual to a $\mathcal{N}=1$ superconformal field theory with global symmetry $SU(2)\times SU(2)\times U(1)$ via the AdS/CFT correspondence. We analyse the limiting behaviour of macroscopic strings and discuss the identification of the dual operators and how their anomalous dimensions should behave as the global charges vary. A class of string solutions we find are dual to operators in SU(2) subsector, and our result implies that the one-loop planar dilatation operator restricted to the SU(2) subsec…
In this paper, based on simple analytic techniques, we explore the integrability conditions for classical stringy configurations defined over $ η$ as well as $ λ$- deformed backgrounds. We perform our analysis considering classical string motions within various subsectors of the full target space geometry. It turns out that classical string configurations defined over $ η$- deformed backgrounds are non-integrable whereas on the other hand, the corresponding configurations are integrable over the $ λ$- deformed background. Our analysis therefore imposes a strong constraint on the operator spect…
We study four-dimensional Chern-Simons theory on $D \times \mathbb{C}$ (where $D$ is a disk), which is understood to describe rational solutions of the Yang-Baxter equation from the work of Costello, Witten and Yamazaki. We find that the theory is dual to a boundary theory, that is a three-dimensional analogue of the two-dimensional chiral WZW model. This boundary theory gives rise to a current algebra that turns out to be an "analytically-continued" toroidal Lie algebra. In addition, we show how certain bulk correlation functions of two and three Wilson lines can be captured by boundary corre…
We review and compare the integrable structures in N=4 gauge theory and string theory on AdS5xS5. Recently, Bethe ansaetze for gauge theory/weak coupling and string theory/strong coupling were proposed to describe scaling dimensions in the su(2) subsector. Here we investigate the Bethe equations for quantum string theory, naively extrapolated to weak coupling. Excitingly, we find a spin chain Hamiltonian similar, but not equal, to the gauge theory dilatation operator.
In this introductory review we discuss dynamical tests of the AdS_5 x S^5 string/N=4 super Yang-Mills duality. After a brief introduction to AdS/CFT we argue that semiclassical string energies yield information on the quantum spectrum of the string in the limit of large angular momenta on the S^5. The energies of the folded and circular spinning string solutions rotating on a S^3 within the S^5 are derived, which yield all loop predictions for the dual gauge theory scaling dimensions. These follow from the eigenvalues of the dilatation operator of N=4 super Yang-Mills in a minimal SU(2) subsec…
This thesis follows two main lines of research, both related to relevant aspects of string theory and its phenomenological/cosmological applications. We study two different generalizations of the integrable SG model to NC geometry, after discussing general properties and issues of integrable theories and NC field theories, mentioning their role in string theory. The question is whether we can obtain an integrable NC SG with factorized S matrix. Of the two models we study, the second NC SG -- derived by dimensional reduction from the stringy NC self-dual YM in (2+2) dimensions -- exhibits the g…

It is known that classical string dynamics in pure AdS_5\times S^5 is integrable and plays an important role in solvability. This is a deep and central issue in holography. Here we investigate similar classical integrability for a more realistic confining background and provide a negative answer. The dynamics of a class of simple string configurations in AdS soliton background can be mapped to the dynamics of a set of non-linearly coupled oscillators. In a suitable limit of small fluctuations we discuss a quasi-periodic analytic solution of the system. However numerics indicates chaotic behavi…
