Formation and evolution of the elliptic flow pattern in Pb+Pb collisions at sqrt{s}=5.5 ATeV and in Au+Au collisions at sqrt{s}=200 AGeV are analyzed for different hadron species within the framework of HYDJET++ Monte-Carlo model. The model contains both hydrodynamic state and jets, thus allowing for a study of the interplay between the soft and hard processes. It is found that jets are terminating the rise of the elliptic flow with increasing transverse momentum. Since jets are more influential at LHC compared to RHIC, the elliptic flow at LHC should be weaker than that at RHIC. The influence of resonance decays on particle elliptic flow is investigated also. These final state interactions enhance the low-p_T part of the v_2 of pions and light baryons, and work towards the fulfilment of idealized constituent quark scaling.
We probe effects of the partial chiral symmetry restoration to the mass of heavy-light mesons in a constituent quark model by changing the constituent quark mass of the light quark. Due to the competing effect between the quark mass and the linearly rising potential, whose contribution to the energy increases as the quark mass decreases, the heavy-light meson mass has a minimum value near the constituent quark mass typically used in the vacuum. Hence, the meson mass increases as one decreases the constituent quark mass consistent with recent QCD sum rule analyses, which show an increasing $D$ …
The Monte Carlo HYDJET++ model, that contains both hydrodynamic state and jets, is applied to study the influence of the interplay between soft and hard processes on the formation of the elliptic flow in heavy-ion collisions at RHIC and LHC energies. Jets are found to cease the hydro-like increase of the elliptic flow with rising p_T. Since jets are more influential at LHC than at RHIC, the v_2 at LHC should be weaker than that at RHIC. Violation of the number-of-constituent-quark (NCQ) scaling is predicted. The decays of resonances are found to enhance the low-p_T part of the elliptic flow of…
The Monte Carlo HYDJET++ model, that combines parametrized hydrodynamics with jets, is employed to study formation of second v_2 and fourth v_4 components of the anisotropic flow in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions at energies of the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) and the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), sqrt{s}=200 AGeV and sqrt{s}=2.76 ATeV, respectively. It is shown that the quenched jets contribute to the soft part of the v_2(p_T) and v_4(p_T) spectra. The jets increase the ratio v_4/v_2^2 thus leading to deviations of the ratio from the value of 0.5 predicted by the ideal hydrod…
We train a network to identify jets with fractional dark decay (semi-visible jets) using the pattern of their low-level jet constituents, and explore the nature of the information used by the network by mapping it to a space of jet substructure observables. Semi-visible jets arise from dark matter particles which decay into a mixture of dark sector (invisible) and Standard Model (visible) particles. Such objects are challenging to identify due to the complex nature of jets and the alignment of the momentum imbalance from the dark particles with the jet axis, but such jets do not yet benefit fr…
We study multiple scatterings of jets on constituents of quark gluon plasma and introduce energy--energy correlations to quantify their effects. The effects from a longitudinally expanding plasma on medium as well as high energy jets are found to be significant at both RHIC and LHC energies. Because jets escape from the plasma long before the completion of mixed phase, these effects are free from complications of final state hadronic interactions and decays. These suggest that jets can be used to probe the plasma that might be created in future high energy heavy ion collisions.
Recent literature on deep neural networks for tagging of highly energetic jets resulting from top quark decays has focused on image based techniques or multivariate approaches using high-level jet substructure variables. Here, a sequential approach to this task is taken by using an ordered sequence of jet constituents as training inputs. Unlike the majority of previous approaches, this strategy does not result in a loss of information during pixelisation or the calculation of high level features. The jet classification method achieves a background rejection of 45 at a 50% efficiency operating …
The transverse and longitudinal transport coefficients for jets in a quark-gluon plasma, $\hat{q}$ and $\hat{e}$, are extracted from simulations of the VNI/BMS parton cascade model. We study their variation under the strong coupling and the parton mass in the medium. We show that their ratio is sensitive to the mass of the plasma constituents. Experimental measurements of both quantities could provide new insights into the nature of the quark-gluon plasma as seen by hard probes.

Quark-Gluon Plasma (QGP), a QCD state of matter created in ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions, has remarkable properties, including, for example, a low shear viscosity over entropy ratio. By detecting the collection of low-momentum particles that arise from the collision, it is possible to gain quantitative insight into the created matter. However, its fast evolution and thermalization properties remain elusive. Only using high momentum objects as probes of QGP can unveil its constituents at different wavelengths. In this review, we attempt to provide a comprehensive picture of what was, …
We present the complete physical picture for the evolution of a high-energy jet propagating through a weakly-coupled quark-gluon plasma (QGP) by analytical and numerical investigation of thermalization of the soft components of the jet. Our results support the following physical picture: the leading particle emits a significant number of mini-jets which promptly evolve via multiple branching and thus degrade into a myriad of soft gluons, with energies of the order of the medium temperature $T$. Via elastic collisions with the medium constituents, these soft gluons relax to local thermal equili…
Triangular flow $v_3$ of identified and inclusive particles in Pb+Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 2.76$ TeV is studied as a function of centrality and transverse momentum within the \textsc{hydjet++} model. The model enables one to investigate the influence of both hard processes and final-state interactions on the harmonics of particle anisotropic flow. Decays of resonances are found to increase the magnitude of the $v_3(p_{\rm T})$ distributions at $p_{\rm T} \geq 2$ GeV/$c$ and shift their maxima to higher transverse momenta. The $p_{\rm T}$-integrated triangular flow, however, becomes sl…
The Monte Carlo event generator HYDJET++ is one of the few generators, designed for the calculations of heavy-ion collisions at ultrarelativistic energies, which combine treatment of soft hydro-like processes with the description of jets traversing the hot and dense partonic medium. The model is employed to study the azimuthal anisotropy phenomena, dihadron angular correlations and event-by-event (EbyE) fluctuations of the anisotropic flow in Pb+Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 2.76$ TeV. The interplay of soft and hard processes describes the violation of the mass hierarchy of meson and baryo…

We study how to use Deep Variational Autoencoders for a fast simulation of jets of particles at the LHC. We represent jets as a list of constituents, characterized by their momenta. Starting from a simulation of the jet before detector effects, we train a Deep Variational Autoencoder to return the corresponding list of constituents after detection. Doing so, we bypass both the time-consuming detector simulation and the collision reconstruction steps of a traditional processing chain, speeding up significantly the events generation workflow. Through model optimization and hyperparameter tuning,…
We present an extension to the jet area-based pileup subtraction for both jet kinematics and jet shapes. A particle-level approach is explored whereby the jet constituents are corrected or removed using an extension of the methods currently being employed by the LHC experiments. Several jet shapes and nominal jet radii are used to assess the performance in simulated events with pileup levels equivalent to approximately 30 and 100 interactions per bunch crossing, which are characteristic of both the LHC Run I and Run II conditions. An improved performance in removing the pileup contributions is…

Multivariate techniques based on engineered features have found wide adoption in the identification of jets resulting from hadronic top decays at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). Recent Deep Learning developments in this area include the treatment of the calorimeter activation as an image or supplying a list of jet constituent momenta to a fully connected network. This latter approach lends itself well to the use of Recurrent Neural Networks. In this work the applicability of architectures incorporating Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) networks is explored. Several network architectures, methods …
Top tagging is a recent approach to identifying boosted hadronic top quarks. It avoids reconstructing individual top decay products and instead uses a jet algorithm to reconstruct the entire top decay. Quite generally, geometrically large jets including heavy particles (fat jets) can be analyzed on the level of their subjet constituents. LHC data will soon allow us to establish this new analysis method. We discuss different tagging algorithms, their critical QCD aspects, and currently available experimental results. For the development of taggers and their different applications this review sh…
We carry out the first theoretical investigation on yields and the hardest parton splitting of large-radius jets reclustered from small radius ($R=0.2$) anti-$k_t$ jets in Pb+Pb collisions, and confront them with the recent ATLAS measurements. The Linear Boltzmann Transport (LBT) model is employed for jet propagation and jet-induced medium excitation in the hot-dense medium. We demonstrate that, with their complex structures, the medium suppression of the reclustered large radius jets at $R=1$ is larger than that of inclusive $R=0.4$ jets defined conventionally. The large radius jet constituent…
We report measurements of jet quenching in $Au+Au$ collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$=200 GeV, based on the semi-inclusive distribution of reconstructed charged particle jets recoiling from a high $p_T$ hadron trigger. Jets are reconstructed with the anti-k$_T$ algorithm ($R$=0.2 to 0.5), with low IR-cutoff of track constituents ($p_{T}>0.2$ GeV/c). Uncorrelated background is corrected using a novel mixed-event technique, with no fragmentation bias imposed by the correction procedure on the accepted recoil jet population. Corrected recoil jet distributions, reported in the range $0<p_{T,jet}^{ch}<3…
We introduce jet topics: a framework to identify underlying classes of jets from collider data. Because of a close mathematical relationship between distributions of observables in jets and emergent themes in sets of documents, we can apply recent techniques in "topic modeling" to extract jet topics from data with minimal or no input from simulation or theory. As a proof of concept with parton shower samples, we apply jet topics to determine separate quark and gluon jet distributions for constituent multiplicity. We also determine separate quark and gluon rapidity spectra from a mixed Z-plus-j…
In this paper, we investigate the medium modifications of $p_{T}$ dispersion($p_{T}D$) of inclusive jets with small radius ($R=0.2$) in Pb+Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s}=2.76$~TeV. The partonic spectrum in the initial hard scattering of elementary collisions are obtained by an event generator POWHEG+PYTHIA, which matches the next-to-leading (NLO) matrix elements with parton showering, and energy loss of fast parton traversing in hot/dense QCD medium is calculated by Monte Carlo simulation within Higher-Twist formalism of jet quenching in heavy-ion collisions. We present the model calculations of n…
We complete the physical picture for the evolution of a high-energy jet propagating through a weakly-coupled quark-gluon plasma by investigating the thermalization of the soft components of the jet. We argue that the following scenario should hold: the leading particle emits a significant number of mini-jets which promptly evolve via quasi-democratic branchings and thus degrade into a myriad of soft gluons, with energies of the order of the medium temperature T. Via elastic collisions with the medium constituents, these soft gluons relax to local thermal equilibrium with the plasma over a time…
Jets of collimated particles serve a multitude of purposes in high energy collisions. Recently, studies of jet interaction with the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) created in high energy heavy ion collisions are of growing interest, particularly towards understanding partonic energy loss in the QGP medium and its related modifications of the jet shower and fragmentation. Since the QGP is a colored medium, the extent of jet quenching and consequently, the transport properties of the medium are expected to be sensitive to fundamental properties of the jets such as the flavor of the parton that initiate…
An event generator for diphoton ($γγ$) production in hadron collisions that includes associated jet production up to two jets has been developed using a subtraction method based on the LLL subtraction. The parton shower (PS) simulation to restore the subtracted divergent components involves both QED and QCD radiation, and QED radiation at very small $Q^{2}$ are simulated by referring to a fragmentation function (FF). The PS/FF simulation has the ability to enforce the radiation of a given number of energetic photons. The generated events can be fed to PYTHIA to obtain particle (hadron)-level e…
The observation of quark and gluon jets has played a crucial role in establishing Quantum Chromodynamics [QCD] as the theory of the strong interactions within the Standard Model of particle physics. The jets, narrowly collimated bundles of hadrons, reflect configurations of quarks and gluons at short distances. Thus, by analysing energy and angular distributions of the jets experimentally, the properties of the basic constituents of matter and the strong forces acting between them can be explored. In this review, which is primarily a description of the discovery of the quark and gluon jets and…
Jet shapes are weighted sums over the four-momenta of the constituents of a jet and reveal details of its internal structure, potentially allowing discrimination of its partonic origin. In this work we make predictions for quark and gluon jet shape distributions in N-jet final states in e+e- collisions, defined with a cone or recombination algorithm, where we measure some jet shape observable on a subset of these jets. Using the framework of Soft-Collinear Effective Theory, we prove a factorization theorem for jet shape distributions and demonstrate the consistent renormalization-group running…
Whether quark- and gluon-initiated jets are modified differently by the quark-gluon plasma produced in heavy-ion collisions is a long-standing question that has thus far eluded a definitive experimental answer. A crucial complication for quark-gluon discrimination in both proton-proton and heavy-ion collisions is that all measurements necessarily average over the (unknown) quark-gluon composition of a jet sample. In the heavy-ion context, the simultaneous modification of both the fractions and substructure of quark and gluon jets by the quark-gluon plasma further obscures the interpretation. H…
The large cross section for t-tbar production at the LHC and at any future hadron collider provides a high-statistics and relatively clean environment for a study of W boson properties: after tagging on a leptonic decay of one of the Ws and the two b-jets, an additional W still remains in the event. We study the prospect of making the first exclusive hadronic decay of a fundamental boson of the standard model, using the decay modes W to pi gamma and W to pi pi pi, and other related decays. By using strong isolation criteria, which we impose by searching for jets with a single particle constitu…
