Whether quark- and gluon-initiated jets are modified differently by the quark-gluon plasma produced in heavy-ion collisions is a long-standing question that has thus far eluded a definitive experimental answer. A crucial complication for quark-gluon discrimination in both proton-proton and heavy-ion collisions is that all measurements necessarily average over the (unknown) quark-gluon composition of a jet sample. In the heavy-ion context, the simultaneous modification of both the fractions and substructure of quark and gluon jets by the quark-gluon plasma further obscures the interpretation. Here, we demonstrate a fully data-driven method for separating quark and gluon contributions to jet observables using a statistical technique called topic modeling. Assuming that jet distributions are a mixture of underlying "quark-like" and "gluon-like" distributions, we show how to extract quark and gluon jet fractions and constituent multiplicity distributions as a function of the jet transverse momentum. This proof-of-concept study is based on proton-proton and heavy-ion collision events from the Monte Carlo event generator Jewel with statistics accessible in Run 4 of the Large Hadron Collider. These results suggest the potential for an experimental determination of quark and gluon jet modifications.
A new Monte Carlo model of jet quenching in nuclear collisions, CUJET1.0, is applied to predict the jet flavor dependence of the nuclear modification factor for fragments {\it $f=π,D,B,e^-$} from quenched jet flavors {\it $g,u,c,b$} in central collisions at RHIC and LHC. The nuclear modification factors for different flavors are predicted to exhibit a novel level crossing pattern over a transverse momentum range $5< p_T< 100$ GeV which can test jet-medium dynamics in quark gluon plasmas.
We calculate the production of high energy photons from Compton scattering and annihilation of a quark jet passing through a quark gluon plasma produced in a relativistic heavy ion collision. The contributions are large and reflect the momentum distribution of the jets and the initial conditions of the plasma.
The discriminators of quark-gluon jets developed for $pp$ collisions at the LHC can be used to measure the gluon jet fraction in a jet sample. It allows to measure various characteristics of the quark and gluon jets. The methodology of such measurements for modern hadron colliders is discussed.
We show explicitly that the leading soft gluon $p_T$ distribution, predicted by Kovner, McLerran, and Weigert after solving classical Yang-Mills equations, can be understood in terms of conventional QCD perturbation theory. We also demonstrate that the key logarithm in their result represents the logarithm in DGLAP evolution equations.
We propose a new framework, merging High Energy Factorization with final-state jet quenching effects due to interactions in a quark-gluon plasma, to compute di-jet rates at mid- and forward rapidity. It allows to consistently study the interplay of initial-state effects with medium interactions, opening the possibility for understanding the dynamics of hard probes in heavy-ion collisions and the QGP evolution in rapidity.
Deep learning techniques have shown the capability to identify the degree of energy loss of high-energy jets traversing hot QCD medium on a jet-by-jet basis. The average amount of quenching of quark and gluon jets in hot QCD medium actually have different characteristics, such as their dependence on the in-medium traversed length and the early-developed jet substructures in the evolution. These observations motivate us to consider these two types of jets separately and classify them from jet images with deep learning techniques. We find that the classification performance gradually decreases w…
We study multiple scatterings of jets on constituents of quark gluon plasma and introduce energy--energy correlations to quantify their effects. The effects from a longitudinally expanding plasma on medium as well as high energy jets are found to be significant at both RHIC and LHC energies. Because jets escape from the plasma long before the completion of mixed phase, these effects are free from complications of final state hadronic interactions and decays. These suggest that jets can be used to probe the plasma that might be created in future high energy heavy ion collisions.
We employ new field-theoretical tools to study photons and jets in a non-equilibrium quark-gluon plasma. Jet broadening and photon emission takes place through radiation which is suppressed by repeated and coherent interaction with the medium. We analyze this physics in an anisotropic plasma such as is created in the early stages of heavy-ion collisions. The anisotropy introduces an angular dependence in radiation and reduces its overall rate. This can affect phenomenological predictions of the rapidity dependence and angular flow of jets and photons.
We discuss the characteristics of collective modes induced by relativistic jets in an anisotropic quark-gluon plasma(AQGP). Assuming a tsunami-like initial jet distribution, it is found that the dispersion relations for both the stable and unstable modes are modified substantially due to the passage of jet compared to the case when there is no jet. It has also been shown that the growth rate of instability first increases compared to the no jet case and then completely turned into damping except the case when the jet velocity is perpendicular to the wave vector in which case the instability al…
$\hat q$ is the average squared transverse momentum transfer per unit length to a high-energy particle traversing a QCD medium such as a quark-gluon plasma. We find the (UV-regulated) value of $\hat q$ to leading order in the weak coupling limit, $\alphas(T) \ll 1$. We then use this value to generalize previous analytic results on the gluon bremsstrahlung and pair production rates for massless high-energy particles in a weakly-coupled quark-gluon plasma, at next-to-leading logarithmic order.
Massless diquark jet and gluon jet productions at large transverse momentum in the coherent diffractive processes at hadron colliders are studied in the two-gluon exchange parametrization of the Pomeron model. We use the helicity amplitude method to calculate the cross section formulas. We find that for the light quark jet and gluon jet production the diffractive process is related to t he differential off-diagonal gluon distribution function in the proton. We estimate the production rate for these processes at the Fermilab Tevatron by approximating the off-diagonal gluon distribution function…
The inclusive gluon jet function is evaluated at two-loop accuracy. This function is relevant for resummations of large perturbative logarithms in collider processes involving low-mass gluon jets. The jet function corresponds to the imaginary part of the gluon propagator in light-cone gauge, which is adopted for the calculation. In addition to the leading jet function, the power-suppressed two-gluon jet functions are given and their renormalization is discussed.
Following our recent paper on the calculations of diffractive quark jet production at hadron colliders, we present here the calculations of gluon jet production at hadron colliders in the two-gluon exchange parameterization of the Pomeron model. We use the helicity amplitude method to calculate the cross section formula. We find that for the gluon jet production the diffractive process is related to the differential off-diagonal gluon distribution function in the proton. We estimate the production rate for this process at the Fermilab Tevatron by approximating the off-diagonal gluon distributi…
We consider three jet production at high $p_T$ in the $γγ\to q \bar q g$ process and calculate quark and gluon jet spectra. The possibility of quark-gluon jet separation is discussed and compared with the $e^+ e^- \to q \bar q g$ case.
The properties of quark and gluon jets depend on jet definitions and event selection. I discuss how these can be included in calculations and present jet definitions designed to give unbiased jets.
We study evolution of colour gluons and prove the possibility of gluon squeezed states at the nonperturbative QCD jet stage. Angular and rapidity dependences of squeezed gluon second correlation function are studied. We demonstrate that the new gluon states can have both sub-poissonian and super-poissonian statistics corresponding to antibunching and bunching of gluons.
The Abelian decomposition of QCD tells that there are two types of gluons, the color neutral neurons and colored chromons. We propose to confirm the Abelian decomposition testing the existence of two types of gluon jets experimentally. We predict that one quarter of the gluon jet is made of the neurons which has the color factor 3/4 and the sharpest jet radius and smallest charged particle multiplicity, while the three quarters of the gluon jet are made of the chromons with the color factor 9/4 which have the broadest jet radious (broader than the quark jet). Moreover, we argue that the neuron…
The characters of the angular distributions of quark jets and gluon jets with different flavors are carefully studied after introducing the cone angle of jets. The quark jets and gluon jets are identified from the 3-jet events which are produced by Monte Carlo simulation Jetset7.4 in e+e- collisions at $\sqrt s$=91.2GeV. It turns out that the ranges of angular distributions of gluon jets are obviously wider than that of quark jets at the same energies. The average cone angles of gluon jets are much larger than that of quark jets. As the multiplicity or the transverse momentum increases, the co…
A new method to identify the gluon jet in 3-jet ``{\bf Y}'' decays of $Z^0$ is presented. The method is based on differences in particle multiplicity between quark jets and gluon jets, and is more effective than tagging by leptonic decay. An experimental test of the method and its application to a study of the ``string effect'' are proposed. Various jet-finding schemes for 3-jet events are compared.
Jet energy transported to quark-gluon plasma during jet-medium interaction excites the QGP medium and creates energetic thermal partons -- recoil particles or recoils. Modification of the jet structure in heavy ion collisions is studied using \textsc{martini}, in which recoil simulation is enabled. In large systems such as central Pb-Pb collisions, the recoil effect is expected to be critical due to strong jet-medium interaction. We show the results of the jet mass function and jet shape function are improved when the recoil particles are included in the reconstructed jets. We conclude that th…
Understanding the inner working of the quark-gluon plasma requires complete and precise jet substructure studies in heavy ion collisions. In this proceeding we discuss the use of quark and gluon jets as independent probes, and how their classification allows us to uncover regions of QCD phase space sensitive to medium dynamics. We introduce the telescoping deconstruction (TD) framework to capture complete jet information and show that TD observables reveal fundamental properties of quark and gluon jets and their modifications in the medium. We draw connections to soft-drop subjet distributions…
This is a summary of the latest results of the DELPHI Collaboration on the properties of identified quark and gluon jets. It covers the measurement of the fragmentation functions of gluons and quarks and their scaling violation behaviour as well as an analysis of the scale dependence of the multiplicities in gluon and quark jets. Further, a precision measurement of CA/CF from the multiplicities in symmetric three jet events is discussed.
We complete the physical picture for the evolution of a high-energy jet propagating through a weakly-coupled quark-gluon plasma by investigating the thermalization of the soft components of the jet. We argue that the following scenario should hold: the leading particle emits a significant number of mini-jets which promptly evolve via quasi-democratic branchings and thus degrade into a myriad of soft gluons, with energies of the order of the medium temperature T. Via elastic collisions with the medium constituents, these soft gluons relax to local thermal equilibrium with the plasma over a time…
We study the evolution of full jet shower in quark-gluon plasma via solving a set of coupled differential transport equations for the three-dimensional momentum distributions of quarks and gluons contained in the full jets. In our jet evolution equations, we include all partonic splitting processes as well as the collisional energy loss and transverse momentum broadening for both the leading and radiated partons of the full jets. Combining with a realistic (2+1)-dimensional viscous hydrodynamic simulation for the space-time profiles of the hot and dense nuclear medium produced in heavy-ion col…
Signatures of dominant and central production of glueballs (binary gluonic mesons) in heavy ion and hadromic collisions are discussed. Search strategies are proposed.
We investigate the effects of an all order QCD resummation of soft gluon emissions for Higgs boson production in association with two hard jets. We consider both the gluon-gluon fusion and weak boson fusion processes and show how to resum a large part of the leading logarithms in the jet veto scale. Our resummation improves on previous analyses which also aim to include the effects of multiple soft gluon radiation. In addition we calculate the interference between weak boson fusion and gluon-gluon fusion and find that it is small.
We report on the calculation of the next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) QCD corrections to the production of two gluonic jets at hadron colliders. In previous work, we discussed gluonic dijet production in the gluon-gluon channel. Here, for the first time, we update our numerical results to include the leading colour contribution to the production of two gluonic jets via quark-antiquark scattering.
In this paper we complete our calculation of the NLO jet vertex which is part of the cross section formulae for the production of Mueller Navelet jets at hadron hadron colliders and of forward jets in deep inelastic electron proton scattering.
We address aspects of jet physics at the Large Hadron Collider focusing on features of recent jet measurements which challenge the theory. We discuss examples illustrating the role of QCD parton showers, nonperturbative corrections, soft multi-gluon emission.
We study the $p/π$ ratio in jets produced in simulated proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=7~\mathrm{TeV}$ using Pythia $6.4$ Monte-Carlo generator. We compare the $p/π$ ratio in the selected quark-like and gluon-like jets to a reference samples of quark- and gluon-jets tagged at Monte-Carlo level. We observe that the contamination in the selected jets significantly influences the observed ratios. This suggests, that the origin of the jet fixes the value of the $p/π$ ratio within the model that we use.
We present a study of the relative energy loss of quark and gluon jets that traverse a weakly-coupled medium. The study is carried out with the jet quenching Monte-Carlo event generator JEWEL which has been validated for a large set of jet observables. We find that the relative energy loss of quark and gluon jets approaches a constant value at large jet energy and that value is significantly larger (closer to 1) than the single parton expectation of $C_F/C_A$. Within JEWEL quark and gluon jets lose energy similarly.
The properties of quark and gluon jets, and the differences between them, are increasingly important at the LHC. However, Monte Carlo event generators are normally tuned to data from $e^+e^-$ collisions which are primarily sensitive to quark-initiated jets. In order to improve the description of gluon jets we make improvements to the perturbative and the non-perturbative modelling of gluon jets and include data with gluon-initiated jets in the tuning for the first time. The resultant tunes significantly improve the description of gluon jets and are now the default in Herwig 7.1.
We study the phenomenon of jet quenching utilizing quark and gluon jet substructures as independent probes of heavy ion collisions. We exploit jet and subjet features to highlight differences between quark and gluon jets in vacuum and in a medium with the jet-quenching model implemented in JEWEL. We begin with a physics-motivated, multivariate analysis of jet substructure observables including the jet mass, the radial moments, the $p_T^D$ and the pixel multiplicity. In comparison, we employ state-of-the-art image-recognition techniques by training a deep convolutional neutral network on jet im…
Analytic predictions for the energy dependence of the mean multiplicities in gluon and quark jets are presented at the next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order (3NLO) of perturbative QCD and are compared to experiment. The 3NLO correction to the gluon jet multiplicity is found to be small. The corresponding theoretical expression provides a good description of available gluon jet measurements. In contrast, the 3NLO correction to the quark jet multiplicity is large and the theoretical expression does not describe the data accurately. It is shown that the well known success of the next-to-leading o…
The gluon radiation induced by multiple scattering of a hard parton in expanding quark-gluon plasma is investigated. The radiative energy loss of hard parton jet is shown to decrease considerably when angular size of extracted jet goes up, but the fraction of loss survives even for the reasonable wide cone of angles due to the coherent effects taking into account the rescattering of the radiated gluons in the QCD medium. The possible application to the jet quenching phenomenon in heavy ion collisions at LHC energies is discussed.
Closed-form expressions for tree-level gluon-gluon scattering: a framework for obtaining theoretical systematic uncertainties for jet-medium Monte Carlo simulations
The different modifications of quark- and gluon-initiated jets in the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) produced in heavy-ion collisions is a long-standing question that has not yet received a definitive answer from experiments. In particular, the relative sizes of the modification of quark and gluon jets differ between theoretical models. Therefore, a fully data-driven technique is crucial for an unbiased extraction of the quark and gluon jet spectra and substructure. We perform a proof-of-concept study based on proton-proton and heavy-ion collision events from the \textsc{Pyquen} generator with stati…
It is shown that the nuclear modification factor can be smaller that unity for jet production at small $x$ and at large transverse momentum without any violation of the factorization theorem and the initial state effects is able to explain the nuclear modification factor of the order of the one measured by ATLAS. In other word, initial state effects are able to describe the jet quenching for the gluon jet production.
Understanding the properties of the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) that is produced in ultra-relativistic nucleus-nucleus collisions has been one of the top priorities of the heavy ion program at the LHC. Energetic jets are produced and subsequently quenched in the collisions. Such jet quenching phenomena provide promising tools to probe the medium properties by studying the modification of jets due to the medium interactions. Significant modifications of jet shapes have been measured. In this talk we focus on the calculation of jet shapes in both proton-proton and lead-lead collisions using soft-co…
We demonstrate that hard dijet production via coherent inelastic diffraction is a promising channel for probing gluon saturation at the Electron-Ion Collider. By $inelastic$ diffraction we mean a process in which the two hard jets - a quark-antiquark pair generated by the decay of the virtual photon - are accompanied by a softer gluon jet, emitted by the quark or the antiquark. This process can be described as the elastic scattering of an effective gluon-gluon dipole. The cross section takes a factorised form, between a hard factor and a unintegrated ("Pomeron") gluon distribution describing t…
Three jets events in the e$^+$e$^-$ collisions at 91.2 GeV are investigated using both HERWIG and JETSET Monte Carlo generators. The angles between the three jets are used to identify the quark and gluon jets. The analysis at parton level is done to ensure the reasonableness of this method and an angular cut is ultilized to improve the purity of this identification. The multiplicity inside the identified quark or gluon jets agree with the QCD predictions.

In particular, the size of the modifications in the quark-gluon plasma differs between theoretical models. Therefore a fully data-driven technique is crucial for an unbiased extraction of the quark and gluon jet spectra and substructure. We investigate the proposal of the CDF collaboration that same-side two-jet production in $p\bar{p}$ collisions may be used to determine the gluon distribution at small $x$.
As most target final states for searches and measurements at the Large Hadron Collider have a particular quark/gluon composition, tools for distinguishing quark- from gluon-initiated jets can be very powerful. In addition to the difficulty of the classification task, quark-versus-gluon jet tagging is challenging to calibrate. The difficulty arises from the topology dependence of quark-versus-gluon jet tagging: since quarks and gluons have net quantum chromodynamic color charge while only colorless hadrons are measured, the radiation pattern inside a jet of a particular type depends on the rest…
We compare the jet-path length and beam-energy dependence of the pion nuclear modification factor and a parton-jet nuclear modification factor at RHIC and LHC. We contrast predictions based on a linear pQCD and a highly non-linear hybrid-AdS holographic model of jet-energy loss. We find that both models require a reduction of the jet-medium coupling from RHIC to LHC to account for the measured pion nuclear modification factor. In case of the parton-jet nuclear modification factor, however, which serves as a lower bound for the LO jet nuclear modification factor of reconstructed jets, the extra…
Two-jet production from the direct photon contribution at HERA is a sensitive measure of the small-$x$ gluon in the proton. We propose measurements of ratios of the jet cross-sections which will clearly distinguish between gluons with or without singular behaviour at small $x$. Furthermore, we show that analogous ratio measurements for the resolved photon contribution provide a sensitive way of determining the gluon distribution in the photon.
The large center-of-mass energies available to the heavy-ion program at the LHC and recent experimental advances at RHIC will enable QCD matter at very high temperatures and energy densities, that is, the quark-gluon plasma (QGP), to be probed in unprecedented ways. Fully-reconstructed inclusive jets and the away-side hadron showers associated with electroweak bosons, that is, tagged jets, are among these exciting new probes. Full jet reconstruction provides an experimental window into the mechanisms of quark and gluon dynamics in the QGP which is not accessible via leading particles and leadi…
A study of di-jet measurements at a future photon collider is reported. The sensitivity to extract the gluon distribution is discussed. The results are compared with calculations for a linear e+e- collider.
We propose a simple way to test the Abelian decomposition of QCD, the existence of two types of gluons, experimentally at LHC. The Abelian decomposition decomposes the gluons to the color neutral neurons and colored chromons gauge independently. This refines the Feynman diagram in a way that the color conservation is explicit, and generalizes the quark model to the quark and chromon model. We predict that the neuron jet has the color factor 3/4 and has a sharpest jet radius and smallest particle multiplicity, while the chromon jet with the color factor 9/4 remains the broadest jet. Moreover, t…
We present the complete physical picture for the evolution of a high-energy jet propagating through a weakly-coupled quark-gluon plasma (QGP) by analytical and numerical investigation of thermalization of the soft components of the jet. Our results support the following physical picture: the leading particle emits a significant number of mini-jets which promptly evolve via multiple branching and thus degrade into a myriad of soft gluons, with energies of the order of the medium temperature $T$. In the first talk I discuss the usefulness of jet grooming for testing jet quenching mechanisms, and I present a calculation of soft-drop jet mass distribution in proton-proton and heavy ion collisions. In the second talk I discuss the comprehensive studies of quark and gluon jet substructure as a way to search for qualitatively new jet modification signatures. I emphasize the importance of precise understanding of jet substructure as well as powerful analysis tools in future heavy ion jet physics studies, with direct applications to hard probes using heavy flavors and hadronically-decaying el…
At the non-perturbative stage of jet evolution, fluctuations of collinear gluons are less than those for coherent states that is indication of gluon squeezed states. We show that gluon entangled states which are closely related with two-mode squeezed states of gluon fields can appear by analogy with corresponding photon states in quantum optics.
We analyse how the reaction gamma p -> gamma + jet + X can serve to constrain the gluon distributions. Our results are based on a code of partonic event generator type which includes full NLO corrections. We conclude that there are phase space domains in which either the gluon in the photon or the gluon in the proton give important contributions to the cross section, which should be observable in HERA experiments.
We develop a jet flavour tagger in the contest of electroweak boson production in association with jets. Here the jet with the highest transverse momentum is considered and a simple cut on a jet angularity may serve as a tagger for the flavour of the jet. This is an infrared and collinear (IRC) safe procedure thus it is well-defined from a theoretical viewpoint. Jet angularities exibit a property called Casimir Scaling (CS) at the leading logarithmic (LL) accuracy. Here we consider also the first deviation from the typical CS behaviour because we use the most recent jet angularities calculatio…
