In the paper of Keller and Reiten, it was shown that the quotient of a triangulated category (with some conditions) by a cluster tilting subcategory becomes an abelian category. After that, Koenig and Zhu showed in detail, how the abelian structure is given on this quotient category, in a more abstract setting. On the other hand, as is well known since 1980s, the heart of any $t$-structure is abelian. We unify these two construction by using the notion of a cotorsion pair. To any cotorsion pair in a triangulated category, we can naturally associate an abelian category, which gives back each of the above two abelian categories, when the cotorsion pair comes from a cluster tilting subcategory, or is a $t$-structure, respectively.
Given a thick subcategory of a triangulated category, we define a colocalisation and a natural long exact sequence that involves the original category and its localisation and colocalisation at the subcategory. Similarly, we construct a natural long exact sequence containing the canonical map between a homological functor and its total derived functor with respect to a thick subcategory.
The stable module category of a selfinjective algebra is triangulated, but need not have any nontrivial $t$-structures, and in particular, full abelian subcategories need not arise as hearts of a $t$-structure. The purpose of this paper is to investigate full abelian subcategories of triangulated categories whose exact structures are related, and more precisely, to explore relations between invariants of finite-dimensional selfinjective algebras and full abelian subcategories of their stable module categories.
Let $\mathcal B$ be an extriangulated category with enough projectives $\mathcal P$ and enough injectives $\mathcal I$, and let $\mathcal R$ be a contravariantly finite rigid subcategory of $\mathcal B$ which contains $\mathcal P$. We have an abelian quotient category $\mathcal H/\mathcal R\subseteq \mathcal B/\mathcal R$ which is equivalent ${\rm mod}(\mathcal R/\mathcal P)$. In this article, we find a one-to-one correspondence between support $τ$-tilting (resp. $τ$-rigid) subcategories of $\mathcal H/\mathcal R$ and maximal relative rigid (resp. relative rigid) subcategories of $\mathcal H$,…
Let $\mathcal{C}$ be a triangulated category with shift functor $[1]$ and $\mathcal{R}$ a rigid subcategory of $\mathcal{C}$. We introduce the notions of two-term $\mathcal{R}[1]$-rigid subcategories, two-term (weak) $\mathcal{R}[1]$-cluster tilting subcategories and two-term maximal $\mathcal{R}[1]$-rigid subcategories, and discuss relationship between them. Our main result shows that there exists a bijection between the set of two-term $\mathcal{R}[1]$-rigid subcategories of $\mathcal{C}$ and the set of $τ$-rigid subcategories of $\mod\mathcal{R}$, which induces a one-to-one correspondence b…
For an exact category $\mathcal{E}$ with enough projectives and with a $d\mathbb{Z}$-cluster tilting subcategory, we show that the singularity category of $\mathcal{E}$ admits a $d\mathbb{Z}$-cluster tilting subcategory. To do this we introduce cluster tilting subcategories of left triangulated categories, and we show that there is a correspondence between cluster tilting subcategories of $\mathcal{E}$ and $\underline{\mathcal{E}}$. We also deduce that the Gorenstein projectives of $\mathcal{E}$ admit a $d\mathbb{Z}$-cluster tilting subcategory under some assumptions. Finally, we compute the $…
The main theme of this paper is to study $τ$-tilting subcategories in an abelian category $\mathscr{A}$ with enough projective objects. We introduce the notion of $τ$-cotorsion torsion triples and show a bijection between the collection of $τ$-cotorsion torsion triples in $\mathscr{A}$ and the collection of $τ$-tilting subcategories of $\mathscr{A}$, generalizing the bijection by Bauer, Botnan, Oppermann and Steen between the collection of cotorsion torsion triples and the collection of tilting subcategories of $\mathscr{A}$. General definitions and results are exemplified using persistent mod…
In a triangulated category T with a pair of triangulated subcategories X and Y, one may consider the subcategory of extensions X*Y. We give conditions for X*Y to be triangulated and use them to provide tools for constructing stable t-structures. In particular, we show how to construct so-called triangles of recollements, that is, triples of stable t-structures of the form (X,Y), (Y,Z), (Z,X). We easily recover some triangles of recollements known from the literature.
A notion of $n$-cotorsion pairs in an extriangulated category with enough projectives and enough injectives is defined in this article. We show that there exists a one-to-one correspondence between $n$-cotorsion pairs and $(n+1)$-cluster tilting subcategories. As an application, this result generalizes the work by Huerta, Mendoza and Pérez in an abelian case. Finally, we give some examples illustrating our main result.
For a triangulated category T, if C is a cluster-tilting subcategory of T, then the quotient category T\C is an abelian category. Under certain conditions, the converse also holds. This is an very important result of cluster-tilting theory, due to Koenig-Zhu and Beligiannis. Now let B be a suitable extriangulated category, which is a simultaneous generalization of triangulated categories and exact categories. We introduce the notion of pre-cluster tilting subcategory C of B, which is a generalization of cluster tilting subcategory. We show that C is cluster tilting if and only if B/C is abelia…
We investigate how to characterize subcategories of abelian categories in terms of intrinsic axioms. In particular, we find intrinsic axioms which characterize generating cogenerating functorially finite subcategories, precluster tilting subcategories, and cluster tilting subcategories of abelian categories. As a consequence we prove that any $d$-abelian category is equivalent to a $d$-cluster tilting subcategory of an abelian category, without any assumption on the categories being projectively generated.
In this paper, we study ICE-closed (= Image-Cokernel-Extension-closed) subcategories of an abelian length category using torsion classes. To each interval $[\mathcal{U},\mathcal{T}]$ in the lattice of torsion classes, we associate a subcategory $\mathcal{T} \cap \mathcal{U}^\perp$ called the heart. We show that every ICE-closed subcategory can be realized as a heart of some interval of torsion classes, and give a lattice-theoretic characterization of intervals whose hearts are ICE-closed. In particular, we prove that ICE-closed subcategories are precisely torsion classes in some wide subcatego…
Recently, Wang, Wei and Zhang define the recollement of extriangulated categories, which is a generalization of both recollement of abelian categories and recollement of triangulated categories. For a recollement $(\mathcal A ,\mathcal B,\mathcal C)$ of extriangulated categories, we show that $n$-tilting (resp. $n$-cotilting) subcategories in $\mathcal A$ and $\mathcal C$ can be glued to get $n$-tilting (resp. $n$-cotilting) subcategories in $\mathcal B$ under certain conditions.
We introduce and develop an analogous of the Auslander-Buchweitz approximation theory (see \cite{AB}) in the context of triangulated categories, by using a version of relative homology in this setting. We also prove several results concerning relative homological algebra in a triangulated category $\T,$ which are based on the behavior of certain subcategories under finiteness of resolutions and vanishing of Hom-spaces. For example: we establish the existence of preenvelopes (and precovers) in certain triangulated subcategories of $\T.$ The results resemble various constructions and results of …
In this paper, we consider a kind of ideal quotient of an extriangulated category such that the ideal is the kernel of a functor from this extriangulated category to an abelian category. We study a condition when the functor is dense and full, in another word, the ideal quotient becomes abelian. Moreover, a new equivalent characterization of cluster-tilting subcategories is given by applying homological methods according to this functor. As an application, we show that in a connected 2-Calabi-Yau triangulated category B, a functorially finite, extension closed subcategory T of B is cluster til…
We define tilting subcategories in arbitrary exact categories to archieve the following. Firstly: Unify existing definitions of tilting subcategories to arbitrary exact categories. Discuss standard results for tilting subcategories: Auslander correspondence, Bazzoni description of the perpendicular category. Secondly: We treat the question of induced derived equivalences separately - given a tilting subcategory T, we ask if a functor on the perpendicular category induces a derived equivalence to a (certain) functor category over T. If this is the case, we call the tilting subcategory ideq tilt…
We put cluster tilting in ageneral framework by showing that any quotient of a triangulated category modulo a tilting subcategory (that is, a maximal one-orthogonal subcategory) carries an abelian structure. These abelian quotients turn out to be module categories of Goreisten algebras of dimension at most one.
We prove that some subquotient categories of exact categories are abelian. This generalizes a result by Koenig-Zhu in the case of (algebraic) triangulated categories. As a particular case, if an exact category B with enough projectives and injectives has a cluster tilting subcategory M, then B/M is abelian. More precisely, it is equivalent to the category of finitely presented modules over the stable category of M.
We study abelian localizations of triangulated categories induced by rigid contravariantly finite subcategories, and also triangulated structures on subfactor categories of triangulated categories. In this context we generalize recent results of Buan-Marsh and Iyama-Yoshino. We also extend basic results of Keller-Reiten concerning the Gorenstein and the Calabi-Yau property for categories arising from certain rigid, not necessarily cluster tilting, subcategories, as well as several results of the literature concerning the connections between 2-cluster tilting subcategories of triangulated categ…
We classify certain subcategories in quotients of exact categories. In particular, we classify the triangulated and thick subcategories of an algebraic triangulated category, i.e. the stable category of a Frobenius category.
We introduce the concept of a pseudo-cluster tilting subcategory from the viewpoint of the fact that the quotient of an exact category by a cluster tilting subcategory is an abelian category. We prove that the quotients in the case of pseudo-cluster tilting are always semi-abelian. In addition, it is abelian if and only if some self-orthogonal conditions are satisfied. We revisit the abelian quotient category of conflations by splitting ones, and get that there exists a unique exact substructure such that it is a cluster quotient.
In our previous article, we constructed an abelian category from any torsion pair on a triangulated category. This generalizes the heart of a $t$-structure and the ideal quotient by a cluster tilting subcategory. Recently, generalizing the quotient by a cluster tilting subcategory, Buan and Marsh showed that an integral preabelian category can be constructed as a quotient, from a rigid object in a triangulated category with some conditions. In this article, by considering a pair of torsion pairs, we make a simultaneous genralization of these two constructions.
Let $B$ be a finite dimensional algebra and $A=B[P_0]$ be the one-point extension algebra of $B$ with respect to the finitely generated projective $B$-module $P_0$. The categories of $B$-modules and $A$-modules are related by two adjoint functors $\mathcal{R}$ and $\mathcal{E}$, called the restriction and the extension functors, respectively. Based on the nice homological properties of these two functors, restriction and extension of some notions such as tilting and $τ$-tilting modules have been studied in the category of finitely presented modules, i.e. small mod. In this paper, we investigat…
For an essentially small triangulated category $\mathcal{T}$, we introduce the notion of prime thick subcategories and define the spectrum of $\mathcal{T}$, which shares the basic properties with the spectrum of a tensor triangulated category introduced by Balmer. We mainly focus on triangulated categories that appear in algebraic geometry such as the derived and the singularity categories of a noetherian scheme $X$. We prove that certain classes of thick subcategories are prime thick subcategories of these triangulated categories. Furthermore, we use this result to show that certain subspaces…
We study aisles in the derived category of a hereditary abelian category. Given an aisle, we associate a sequence of subcategories of the abelian category by considering the different homologies of the aisle. We then obtain a sequence, called a narrow sequence. We then prove that a narrow sequence in a hereditary abelian category consists of a nondecreasing sequence of wide subcategories, together with a tilting torsion class in each of these wide subcategories. Furthermore, there are relations these torsion classes have to satisfy. These results are sufficient to recover known classifications…
In the preceding part (I) of this paper, we showed that for any torsion pair (i.e., $t$-structure without the shift-closedness) in a triangulated category, there is an associated abelian category, which we call the heart. Two extremal cases of torsion pairs are $t$-structures and cluster tilting subcategories. If the torsion pair comes from a $t$-structure, then its heart is nothing other than the heart of this $t$-structure. In this case, as is well known, by composing certain adjoint functors, we obtain a cohomological functor from the triangulated category to the heart. If the torsion pair …
We study IE-closed subcategories of a module category, subcategories which are closed under taking Images and Extensions. We investigate the relation between IE-closed subcategories and torsion pairs, and characterize $τ$-tilting finite algebras using IE-closed subcategories. For the hereditary case, we show that IE-closed subcategories can be classified by twin rigid modules, pairs of rigid modules satisfying some homological conditions. Moreover, we introduce mutation of twin rigid modules analogously to tilting modules, which gives a way to calculate all twin rigid modules for the represent…
Beligiannis and Marmaridis [\emph{Comm. in Algebra,} 22(12)(1994), 5021-5036] constructed the left and right triangulated structures on the stable categories of additive categories induced from some homological finite subcategories. We extend their results to slightly more general settings. As an application of our results we give some new examples of stable categories which have left or right triangulated structures from abelian model categories. An interesting outcome is that we can describe the pretriangulated structures of the homotopy categories of abelian model categories via the ones of…
We study objects in triangulated categories which have a two-dimensional graded endomorphism algebra. Given such an object, we show that there is a unique maximal triangulated subcategory, in which the object is spherical. This general result is then applied to algebraic geometry.
We prove that, in a triangulated category with combinatorial models, every localizing subcategory is coreflective and every colocalizing subcategory is reflective if a certain large-cardinal axiom (Vopenka's principle) is assumed true. It follows that, under the same assumptions, orthogonality sets up a bijective correspondence between localizing subcategories and colocalizing subcategories. The existence of such a bijection was left as an open problem by Hovey, Palmieri and Strickland in their axiomatic study of stable homotopy categories and also by Neeman in the context of well-generated tr…
We prove that the Balmer spectrum of a tensor triangulated category is homeomorphic to the Zariski spectrum of its graded central ring, provided the triangulated category is generated by its tensor unit and the graded central ring is noetherian and regular in a weak sense. There follows a classification of all thick subcategories, and the result extends to the compactly generated setting to yield a classification of all localizing subcategories as well as the analog of the telescope conjecture. This generalizes results of Shamir for commutative ring spectra.
As a generalization of acyclic 2-Calabi-Yau categories, we consider 2-Calabi-Yau categories with a directed cluster-tilting subcategory; we study their cluster-tilting subcategories and the cluster combinatorics that they encode. We show that such categories have a cluster structure. Triangulated 2-Calabi-Yau categories with a directed cluster-tilting subcategory are closely related to representations of certain semi-hereditary categories, more specifically to representations of thread quivers. Thread quivers are a tool to classify and study certain semi-hereditary categories using both quiver…
This short note surveys the constructions of 3-Calabi--Yau triangulated categories with simple-minded collections due to Ginzburg and Kontsevich--Soibelman and the constructions of 2-Calabi--Yau triangulated categories with cluster-tilting objects due to Buan--Marsh--Reineke--Reiten--Todorov and Amiot, and includes a discussion on the normal form of 2-Calabi--Yau triangulated categories with cluster-tilting objects.
We prove that certain triangulated categories are (weakly) approximable in the sense of A. Neeman. We prove that a triangulated $C$ that is compactly generated by a single object $G$ is weakly approximable if $C(G,G[i])=0$ for $i>1$ (we say that $G$ is weakly negative if this assumption is fulfilled; the case where the equality $C(G,G[1])=0$ is fulfilled as well was mentioned by Neeman himself). Moreover, if $G\cong \bigoplus_{0\le i\le n}G_i$ and $C(G_i,G_j[1])=0$ whenever $i\le j$ then $C$ is also approximable. The latter result can be useful since (under a few more additional assumptions) i…
As shown by Happel, from any Frobenius exact category, we can construct a triangulated category as a stable category. On the other hand, it was shown by Iyama and Yoshino that if a pair of subcategories $\mathcal{D}\subseteq\mathcal{Z}$ in a triangulated category satisfies certain conditions (i.e., $(\mathcal{Z},\mathcal{Z})$ is a $\mathcal{D}$-mutation pair), then $\mathcal{Z}/\mathcal{D}$ becomes a triangulated category. In this article, we consider a simultaneous generalization of these two constructions.
We show that in an essentially small rigid tensor triangulated category with connected Balmer spectrum there are no proper non-zero thick tensor ideals admitting strong generators. This proves, for instance, that the category of perfect complexes over a commutative ring without non-trivial idempotents has no proper non-zero thick subcategories that are strongly generated.
In representation theory of algebras the notion of `mutation' often plays important roles, and two cases are well known, i.e. `cluster tilting mutation' and `exceptional mutation'. In this paper we focus on `tilting mutation', which has a disadvantage that it is often impossible, i.e. some of summands of a tilting object can not be replaced to get a new tilting object. The aim of this paper is to take away this disadvantage by introducing `silting mutation' for silting objects as a generalization of `tilting mutation'. We shall develope a basic theory of silting mutation. In particular, we int…
We study smashing subcategories of a triangulated category with coproducts via silting theory. Our main result states that for derived categories of dg modules over a non-positive differential graded ring, every compactly generated localising subcategory is generated by a partial silting object. In particular, every such smashing subcategory admits a silting t-structure.
We study ideal cotorsion pairs associated to weak proper classes of triangles in extension closed subcategories of triangulated categories. This approach allows us to extend the recent ideal approximations theory developed by Fu, Herzog et al. for exact categories in the above mentioned context, and to provide simplified proofs for the ideal versions of some standard results as Salce's Lemma, Wakamatsu's Lemma and Christensen's Ghost Lemma. In the last part of the paper we apply the theory in order to study connections between projective classes (in particular localization or smashing subcateg…
We introduce a new invariant for triangulated categories: the poset of spherical subcategories ordered by inclusion. This yields several numerical invariants, like the cardinality and the height of the poset. We explicitly describe spherical subcategories and their poset structure for derived categories of certain finite-dimensional algebras.
Let $\mathcal A$ be a Hom-finite abelian category with enough projectives. In this note, we show that any covariantly finite $τ$-rigid subcategory is contained in a support $τ$-tilting subcategory. We also show that support $τ$-tilting subcategories are in bijection with certain finitely generated torsion classes. Some applications of our main results are also given.
We define the notion of right $n$-angulated category, which generalizes the notion of right triangulated category. Let $\mathcal{C}$ be an additive category or $n$-angulated category and $\mathcal{X}$ a covariantly finite subcategory, we show that under certain conditions the quotient $\mathcal{C}/\mathcal{X}$ is a right $n$-angulated category. This result generalizes some previous work.
A notion of stratification is introduced for any compactly generated triangulated category T endowed with an action of a graded commutative noetherian ring R. The utility of this notion is demonstrated by establishing diverse consequences which follow when T is stratified by R. Among them are a classification of the localizing subcategories of T in terms of subsets of the set of prime ideals in R; a classification of the thick subcategories of the subcategory of compact objects in T; and results concerning the support of the R-module of homomorphisms Hom_T^*(C,D) leading to an analogue of the …
