In this paper, we initiate the study of finite temperature quantum field theories (QFT's) on the Moyal plane. Such theories violate causality which influences the properties of these theories. In particular, causality influences the fluctuation-dissipation theorem: as we show, a disturbance in a space-time region $M_1$ creates a response in a space-time region $M_2$ space-like with respect to $M_1$ ($M_1\times M_2$). The relativistic Kubo formula with and without noncommutativity is discussed in detail, and the modified properties of relaxation time and the dependence of mean square fluctuations on time are derived. In particular, the Sinha-Sorkin result \cite{sorkin-sinha} on the logarithmic time dependence of the mean square fluctuations is discussed in our context.
We derive an exact formula for the noncommutative susceptibility in terms of the susceptibility for the corresponding commutative case. It shows that noncommutative corrections in the four-momentum space have remarkable periodicity properties as a function of the four-momentum $k$. They have direction dependence as well and vanish for certain directions of the spatial momentum. These are striking observable signals for noncommutativity. The Lehmann representation is also generalized to any value of the noncommutativity parameter $θ^{μν}$ and finite temperatures.
Modulo some natural generalizations to noncompact spaces, we show in this letter that Moyal planes are nonunital spectral triples in the sense of Connes. The action functional of these triples is computed, and we obtain the expected result, ie the noncommutative Yang-Mills action associated with the Moyal product. In particular, we show that Moyal gauge theory naturally fit into the rigorous framework of noncommutative geometry.
We present an explicit construction of a unitary representation of the commutator algebra satisfied by position and momentum operators on the Moyal plane.
We give an introductory review of quantum physics on the noncommutative spacetime called the Groenewold-Moyal plane. Basic ideas like star products, twisted statistics, second quantized fields and discrete symmetries are discussed. We also outline some of the recent developments in these fields and mention where one can search for experimental signals.
We present here a completely operatorial approach, using Hilbert-Schmidt operators, to compute spectral distances between time-like separated "events ", associated with the pure states of the algebra describing the Lorentzian Moyal plane, using the axiomatic framework given by [13, 14]. The result shows no deformations of non-commutative origin, as in the Euclidean case.
Extending a result of D.V. Vassilevich, we obtain the asymptotic expansion for the trace of a "spatially" regularized heat operator associated with a generalized Laplacian defined with integral Moyal products. The Moyal hyperplanes corresponding to any skewsymmetric matrix $Θ$ being spectral triples, the spectral action introduced in noncommutative geometry by A. Chamseddine and A. Connes is computed. This result generalizes the Connes-Lott action previously computed by Gayral for symplectic $Θ$.
Metrics structures stemming from the Connes distance promote Moyal planes to the status of quantum metric spaces. We discuss this aspect in the light of recent developments, emphasizing the role of Moyal planes as representative examples of a recently introduced notion of quantum (noncommutative) locally compact space. We move then to the framework of Lorentzian noncommutative geometry and we examine the possibility of defining a notion of causality on Moyal plane, which is somewhat controversial in the area of mathematical physics. We show the actual existence of causal relations between the …
In this talk, we review the basics concepts of fuzzy physics and quantum field theory on the Groenwald-Moyal Plane as examples of noncommutative spaces in physics. We introduce the basic ideas, and discuss some important results in these fields. In the end we outline some recent developments in the field.
Quantum theories constructed on the noncommutative spacetime called the Groenewold-Moyal plane exhibit many interesting properties such as Lorentz and CPT noninvariance, causality violation and twisted statistics. We show that such violations lead to many striking features that may be tested experimentally. These theories predict Pauli forbidden transitions due to twisted statistics, anisotropies in the cosmic microwave background radiation due to correlations of observables in spacelike regions and Lorentz and CPT violations in scattering amplitudes.
Axioms for nonunital spectral triples, extending those introduced in the unital case by Connes, are proposed. As a guide, and for the sake of their importance in noncommutative quantum field theory, the spaces $\R^{2N}$ endowed with Moyal products are intensively investigated. Some physical applications, such as the construction of noncommutative Wick monomials and the computation of the Connes--Lott functional action, are given for these noncommutative hyperplanes.
We define a coordinate operator in a QFT-fashion to obtain by a deformation procedure a relativistic Moyal-Weyl spacetime. The idea is extracted from recent progress in deformation theory concerning the emergence of the quantum plane of the Landau-quantization. The obtained spacetime is not equal to the standard Moyal-Weyl plane but relativistic corrections occur.
Twisted quantum field theories on the Groenewold-Moyal plane are known to be non-local. Despite this non-locality, it is possible to define a generalized notion of causality. We show that interacting quantum field theories that involve only couplings between matter fields, or between matter fields and minimally coupled U(1) gauge fields are causal in this sense. On the other hand, interactions between matter fields and non-abelian gauge fields violate this generalized causality. We derive the modified Feynman rules emergent from these features. They imply that interactions of matter with non-a…
Quantum theories constructed on the noncommutative spacetime called the Groenewold-Moyal(GM) plane exhibit many interesting properties such as causality violation, Lorentz and CPT non-invariance and twisted statistics. Such violations lead to many striking features that may be tested experimentally. Thus these theories predict Pauli-forbidden transitions due to twisted statistics, anisotropies and acausal effects in the cosmic microwave background radiation in correlations of observables and Lorentz and CPT violations in scattering amplitudes. Such features of quantum physics on the GM plane a…
We construct a `non-unital spectral triple of finite volume' out of the Moyal product and a differential square root of the harmonic oscillator Hamiltonian. We find that the spectral dimension of this triple is d but the KO-dimension is 2d. We add another Connes-Lott copy and compute the spectral action of the corresponding U(1)-Yang-Mills-Higgs model. We find that the `covariant coordinate' involving the gauge field combines with the Higgs field to a unified potential, yielding a deep unification of discrete and continuous parts of the geometry.
The Moyal and Wick-Voros planes A^{M,V}_θ are *-isomorphic. On each of these planes the Poincaré group acts as a Hopf algebra symmetry if its coproducts are deformed by twist factors. We show that the *-isomorphism T: A^M_θ to A^V_θ does not also map the corresponding twists of the Poincaré group algebra. The quantum field theories on these planes with twisted Poincaré-Hopf symmetries are thus inequivalent. We explicitly verify this result by showing that a non-trivial dependence on the non-commutative parameter is present for the Wick-Voros plane in a self-energy diagram whereas it is known t…
The spectral distance for noncommutative Moyal planes is considered in the framework of a non compact spectral triple recently proposed as a possible noncommutative analog of non compact Riemannian spin manifold. An explicit formula for the distance between any two elements of a particular class of pure states can be determined. The corresponding result is discussed. The existence of some pure states at infinite distance signals that the topology of the spectral distance on the space of states is not the weak * topology. The case of the noncommutative torus is also considered and a formula for…
Motivation for the study of spacetime noncommutativity comes primarily from its possible use in investigations of (Planck-scale) spacetime fuzziness, but most work focuses on S-matrix/field-theory observables and still very little has been established for geometric observables. We argue that it might be useful to exploit the "pregeometric" formulation of spacetime noncommutativity, which in particular describes the coordinates of the Moyal plane in terms of the phase-space coordinates of a point particle "living" in a auxiliary/fictitious spacetime ($\{x_1,x_2\}_{Moyal} \equiv \{q,p\}_{particl…
We study the oscillations of a scalar field on a noncommutative disc implementing the boundary as the limit case of an interaction with an appropriately chosen confining background. The space of quantum fluctuations of the field is finite dimensional and displays the rotational and parity symmetry of the disc. We perform a numerical evaluation of the (finite) Casimir energy and obtain similar results as for the fuzzy sphere and torus.
We generalize the Endo formula originally developed for the computation of the heat kernel asymptotic expansion for non-minimal operators in commutative gauge theories to the noncommutative case. In this way, the first three non-zero heat trace coefficients of the non-minimal U(N) gauge field kinetic operator on the Moyal plane taken in an arbitrary background are calculated. We show that the non-planar part of the heat trace asymptotics is determined by U(1) sector of the gauge model. The non-planar or mixed heat kernel coefficients are shown to be gauge-fixing dependent in any dimension of s…
Field theories on the Groenewold-Moyal(GM) plane are studied using the Lehmann-Symanzik-Zimmermann(LSZ) formalism. The example of real scalar fields is treated in detail. The S-matrix elements in this non-perturbative approach are shown to be equal to the interaction representation S-matrix elements. This is a new non-trivial result: in both cases, the S-operator is independent of the noncommutative deformation parameter $θ_{μν}$ and the change in scattering amplitudes due to noncommutativity is just a time delay. This result is verified in two different ways. But the off-shell Green's functio…
We investigate a version of noncommutative QED where the interaction term, although natural, breaks the spin-statistics connection. We calculate $e^- + e^- -> e^- + e^-$ and $γ+ e^- -> γ+ e^-$ cross-sections in the tree approximation and explicitly display their dependence on theta^{μν}. Remarkably the zero of the elastic $e^- + e^- -> e^- + e^-$ cross-section at 90-degrees in the center-of-mass system, which is due to Pauli principle, is shifted away as a function of theta^{μν} and energy.
We study the noncommutative geometry of the Moyal plane from a metric point of view. Starting from a non compact spectral triple based on the Moyal deformation A of the algebra of Schwartz functions on R^2, we explicitly compute Connes' spectral distance between the pure states of A corresponding to eigenfunctions of the quantum harmonic oscillator. For other pure states, we provide a lower bound to the spectral distance, and show that the latest is not always finite. As a consequence, we show that the spectral triple [20] is not a spectral metric space in the sense of [5]. This motivates the …
We consider bosons on Euclidean R^4 that are minimally coupled to an external Yang-Mills field. We compute the logarithmically divergent part of the cut-off regularized quantum effective action of this system. We confirm the known result that this term is proportional to the Yang-Mills action. We use pseudodifferential operator methods throughout to prepare the ground for a generalization of our calculation to the noncommutative four-dimensional Moyal plane (also known as noncommutative flat space). We also include a detailed comparison of our cut-off regularization to heat kernel techniques. …
It is known that Berry curvature of the band structure of certain crystals can lead to effective noncommutativity between spatial coordinates. Using the techniques of twisted quantum field theory, we investigate the question of the formation of a paired state of twisted fermions in such a system. We find that to leading order in the noncommutativity parameter, the gap between the non-interacting ground state and the paired state is {\it smaller} compared to its commutative counterpart. This suggests that BCS type superconductivity, if present in such systems, is more fragile and easier to disr…
On Moyal space-time, one can implement twisted Poincaré symmetry with the resultant modification of symmetrization and anti-symmetrization postulates for bosons and fermions. We develop the thermofield approach of Umezawa and Takahashi on such a spacetime preserving the twisted Poincaré symmetry of the underlying quantum field theory(qft). Implications of this twisted Poincaré symmetry for qft's at finite temperature are pointed out.
Inspired by a recent work that proposes using coherent states to evaluate the Feynman kernel in noncommutative space, we provide an independent formulation of the path-integral approach for quantum mechanics on the Moyal plane, with the transition amplitude defined between two coherent states of mean position coordinates. In our approach, we invoke solely a representation of the of the noncommutative algebra in terms of commutative variables. The kernel expression for a general Hamiltonian was found to contain gaussian-like damping terms, and it is non-perturbative in the sense that it does no…
We show how to get a non-commutative product for functions on space-time starting from the deformation of the coproduct of the Poincare' group using the Drinfel'd twist. Thus it is easy to see that the commutative algebra of functions on space-time (R^4) can be identified as the set of functions on the Poincare' group invariant under the right action of the Lorentz group provided we use the standard coproduct for the Poincare' group. We obtain our results for the noncommutative Moyal plane by generalizing this result to the case of the twisted coproduct. This extension is not trivial and invol…
We consider noncommutative gravity on a space with canonical noncommutativity that is based on the commutative MacDowell-Mansouri action. Gravity is treated as gauge theory of the noncommutative $SO(1,3)_\star$ group and the Seiberg-Witten (SW) map is used to express noncommutative fields in terms of the corresponding commutative fields. In the commutative limit the noncommutative action reduces to the Einstein-Hilbert action plus the cosmological term and the topological Gauss-Bonnet term. After the SW expansion in the noncommutative parameter the first order correction to the action, as expe…
The Groenewold-Moyal plane is the algebra A_θ(R^(d+1)) of functions on R^(d+1) with the star-product as the multiplication law, and the commutator [x_μ,x_ν] =i θ_{μν} between the coordinate functions. Chaichian et al. and Aschieri et al. have proved that the Poincare group acts as automorphisms on A_θ(R^(d+1))$ if the coproduct is deformed. (See also the prior work of Majid, Oeckl and Grosse et al). In fact, the diffeomorphism group with a deformed coproduct also does so according to the results of Aschieri et al. In this paper we show that for this new action, the Bose and Fermi commutation r…
We study the metric aspect of the Moyal plane from Connes' noncommutative geometry point of view. First, we compute Connes' spectral distance associated with the natural isometric action of R^2 on the algebra of the Moyal plane A. We show that the distance between any state of A and any of its translated is precisely the amplitude of the translation. As a consequence, we obtain the spectral distance between coherent states of the quantum harmonic oscillator as the Euclidean distance on the plane. We investigate the classical limit, showing that the set of coherent states equipped with Connes' …
We construct a family of constant curvature metrics on the Moyal plane and compute the Gauss-Bonnet term for each of them. They arise from the conformal rescaling of the metric in the orthonormal frame approach. We find a particular solution, which corresponds to the Fubini-Study metric and which equips the Moyal algebra with the geometry of a noncommutative sphere.
In this paper, we further develop the analysis started in an earlier paper on the inequivalence of certain quantum field theories on noncommutative spacetimes constructed using twisted fields. The issue is of physical importance. Thus it is well known that the commutation relations among spacetime coordinates, which define a noncommutative spacetime, do not constrain the deformation induced on the algebra of functions uniquely. Such deformations are all mathematically equivalent in a very precise sense. Here we show how this freedom at the level of deformations of the algebra of functions can …
We introduce an area operator for the Moyal noncommutative plane. We find that the spectrum is discrete, but, contrary to the expectation formulated by other authors, not characterized by a "minimum-area principle". We show that an intuitive analysis of the uncertainty relations obtained from Moyal-plane noncommutativity is fully consistent with our results for the spectrum, and we argue that our area operator should be generalizable to several other noncommutative spaces. We also observe that the properties of distances and areas in the Moyal plane expose some weaknesses in the line of reason…
We show that despite the inherent non-locality of quantum field theories on the Groenewold-Moyal (GM) plane, one can find a class of ${\bf C}$, ${\bf P}$, ${\bf T}$ and ${\bf CPT}$ invariant theories. In particular, these are theories without gauge fields or with just gauge fields and no matter fields. We also show that in the presence of gauge fields, one can have a field theory where the Hamiltonian is ${\bf C}$ and ${\bf T}$ invariant while the $S$-matrix violates ${\bf P}$ and ${\bf CPT}$. In non-abelian gauge theories with matter fields such as the electro-weak and $QCD$ sectors of the st…
We prove that the self-interacting scalar field on the four-dimensional degenerate Moyal plane is renormalisable to all orders when adding a suitable counterterm to the Lagrangean. Despite the apparent simplicity of the model, it raises several non trivial questions. Our result is a first step towards the definition of renormalisable quantum field theories on a non-commutative Minkowski space.
Recent work [hep-th/0504183,hep-th/0508002] indicates an approach to the formulation of diffeomorphism invariant quantum field theories (qft's) on the Groenewold-Moyal (GM) plane. In this approach to the qft's, statistics gets twisted and the S-matrix in the non-gauge qft's becomes independent of the noncommutativity parameter theta^{μν}. Here we show that the noncommutative algebra has a commutative spacetime algebra as a substructure: the Poincare, diffeomorphism and gauge groups are based on this algebra in the twisted approach as is known already from the earlier work of [hep-th/0510059]. …
The quantized free Dirac field is considered on Minkowski spacetime (of general dimension). The Dirac field is coupled to an external scalar potential whose support is finite in time and which acts by a Moyal-deformed multiplication with respect to the spatial variables. The Moyal-deformed multiplication corresponds to the product of the algebra of a Moyal plane described in the setting of spectral geometry. It will be explained how this leads to an interpretation of the Dirac field as a quantum field theory on Moyal-deformed Minkowski spacetime (with commutative time) in a setting of Lorentzi…
We present a detailed study of plane waves in noncommutative abelian gauge theories. The dispersion relation is deformed from its usual form whenever a constant background electromagnetic field is present and is similar to that of an anisotropic medium with no Faraday rotation nor birefringence. When the noncommutativity is induced by the Moyal product we find that for some values of the background magnetic field no plane waves are allowed when time is noncommutative. In the Seiberg-Witten context no restriction is found. We also derive the energy-momentum tensor in the Seiberg-Witten case. We…
We consider a Moyal plane and propose to make the noncommutativity parameter Θ^{μν} bifermionic, i.e., composed of two fermionic (Grassmann odd) parameters. The Moyal product then contains a finite number of derivatives, which allows to avoid difficulties of the standard approach. As an example, we construct a two-dimensional noncommutative field theory model based on the Moyal product with a bifermionic parameter and show that it has a locally conserved energy-momentum tensor. The model has no problems with the canonical quantization and appears to be renormalizable.
We revise and extend the algorithm provided in [1] to compute the finite Connes' distance between normal states. The original formula in [1] contains an error and actually only provides a lower bound. The correct expression, which we provide here, involves the computation of the infimum of an expression which involves the "transverse" component of the algebra element in addition to the "longitudinal" component of [1]. This renders the formula less user-friendly, as the determination of the exact transverse component for which the infimum is reached remains a non-trivial task, but under rather …
It is by now well known that the Poincaré group acts on the Moyal plane with a twisted coproduct. Poincaré invariant classical field theories can be formulated for this twisted coproduct. In this paper we systematically study such a twisted Poincaré action in quantum theories on the Moyal plane. We develop quantum field theories invariant under the twisted action from the representations of the Poincaré group, ensuring also the invariance of the S-matrix under the twisted action of the group . A significant new contribution here is the construction of the Poincaré generators using quantum fiel…
Fully Poincaré covariant quantum field theories on non-commutative Moyal Minkowski spacetime so far have been considered in their vacuum representations, i.e. at zero temperature. Here we report on work in progress regarding their thermal representations, corresponding to physical states at non-zero temperature, which turn out to be markedly different from both, thermal representations of quantum field theory on commutative Minkowski spacetime, and such representations of non-covariant quantum field theory on Moyal Minkowski space with a fixed deformation matrix.
Non commutative quantum field theory is a possible candidate for the quantization of gravity. In our thesis we study in detail the $ϕ4$ model on the Moyal plane with an harmonic potential. Introduced by Grosse and Wulkenhaar, this model exhibits the Langmann-Szabo duality not only for the vertex but also for the propagator. We have obtained several results concerning this model. We have proved the renormalisability of this theory at all orders in the position space. We have introduced the parametric and Complete Mellin representation for the model. Furthermore we have proved that the coupling …
We examine noncommutative Chern-Simons theory on a bounded spatial domain. We argue that upon `turning on' the noncommutativity, the edge observables, which characterized the commutative theory, move into the bulk. We show this to lowest order in the noncommutativity parameter appearing in the Moyal star product. If one includes all orders, the Hamiltonian formulation of the gauge theory ceases to exist, indicating that the Moyal star product must be modified in the presence of a boundary. Alternative descriptions are matrix models. We examine one such model, obtained by a simple truncation of…
We consider an easy way to get the noncommutative spacetime in Minkowski space. This corresponds to introducing a magnetic field ${\rm\bf B} = B \hat {\rm\bf k}$ in the plane. We construct a green's function in coordinate space which includes a Moyal phase factor. The projection to the lowest Landau level(LLL) is necessary for a simple calculation. Using this green's function and a second quantized formalism, we study the thermodynamic property of the anyons on the noncommutative geometry. It turns out that the Moyal phase factors contribute to the thermodynamic potential $Ω$ as opposed to the…
We study the eikonal approximation to quantum mechanics on the Moyal plane. Instead of using a star product, the analysis is carried out in terms of operator-valued wavefunctions depending on noncommuting, operator-valued coordinates.
We study topological aspects of matrix models and noncommutative cohomological field theories (N.C.CohFT). N.C.CohFT have symmetry under the arbitrary infinitesimal noncommutative parameter $θ$ deformation. This fact implies that N.C.CohFT possess a less sensitive topological property than K-theory, but the classification of manifolds by N.C.CohFT has a possibility to give a new view point of global characterization of noncommutative manifolds. To investigate properties of N.C.CohFT, we construct some models whose fixed point loci are given by sets of projection operators. Particularly, the pa…
We present a model of Moyal-type noncommutativity with time-depending noncommutativity parameter and the exact gauge invariant action for the U(1) noncommutative gauge theory. We briefly result the results of the analysis of plane-wave propagation in a regime of a small but rapidly changing noncommutativity.
In this paper we study the midpoint structure of the algebra of open strings from the standpoint of the operator/Moyal formalism. We construct a split string description for the continuous Moyal product of hep-th/0202087, study the breakdown of associativity in the star algebra, and identify in infinite sequence of new (anti)commutative coordinates for the star product in in the complex plane. We also explain how poles in the open string non(anti)commutativity parameter correspond to certain ``null'' operators which annihilate the vertex, implying that states proportional to such operators ten…
We discuss conformal symmetry on the two dimensional noncommutative plane equipped with Moyal product in the twist deformed context. We show that the consistent use of the twist procedure leads to results which are free from ambiguities. This lends support to the importance of the use of twist symmetries in noncommutative geometry.
We first use the coherent state formalism of fuzzy space to show that the fuzziness will eliminate point-like structure of a particle in favor of smeared object, which is an exponential decay function in contrast to the Gaussian type in the Moyal noncommutative space. The exponential decay function implies that, in the UV region, the fuzziness provides an extra power-decay factor in the Feynman propagator, contrasts to the exponential-decay factor in the Moyal space. We also calculate the particle heat capacity and see that it approaches to zero at high temperature. Next, we use the found smea…
In the absence of gauge fields, quantum field theories on the Groenewold-Moyal (GM) plane are invariant under a twisted action of the Poincare group if they are formulated following [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6]. In that formulation, such theories also have no UV-IR mixing [7]. Here we investigate UV-IR mixing in gauge theories with matter following the approach of [3, 4]. We prove that there is UV-IR mixing in the one-loop diagram of the S-matrix involving a coupling between gauge and matter fields on the GM plane, the gauge field being nonabelian. There is no UV-IR mixing if it is abelian.
Graphene on two dimensional (2D) noncommutative (NC) plane in the presence of a constant background magnetic field has been studied. To handel the gauge-invariance issue we start our analysis by a effective massles NC Dirac field theory where we incorporate the Seiberg-Witten (SW) map along with the Moyal star ($\star$) product. The gauge-invariant Hamiltonian of a massless Dirac particle is then computed which is used to study the relativistic Landau problem of graphene on NC plane. Specifically we study the quantum dynamics of a massless relativistic electron moves on monolayer graphene, in …
A non-associative Groenewold-Moyal plane is constructed using quaternion-valued function algebras. The symmetrized multi-particle states, the scalar product, the annihilation/creation algebra and d the formulation in terms of a Hopf algebra are also developed. Non-associative quantum algebras in terms of position and momentum operators are given as the simplest examples of a framework whose applications may involve string theory and non-linear quantum field theory
We propose a new relativistic Lorentz-invariant spin-noncommutative algebra. Using the Weyl ordering of noncommutative position operators, we build an analogue of the Moyal-Groenewald product for the proposed algebra. The Lagrange function of an electromagnetic field in the space with spin noncommutativity is constructed. In such a space electromagnetic field becomes non-abelian. A gauge transformation law of this field is also obtained. Exact nonlinear field equations of noncommutative electromagnetic field are derived from the least action principle. Within the perturbative approach we consi…
We present an account of the ADHM construction of instantons on Euclidean space-time $\mathbb{R}^4$ from the point of view of noncommutative geometry. We recall the main ingredients of the classical construction in a coordinate algebra format, which we then deform using a cocycle twisting procedure to obtain a method for constructing families of instantons on noncommutative space-time, parameterised by solutions to an appropriate set of ADHM equations. We illustrate the noncommutative construction in two special cases: the Moyal-Groenewold plane $\mathbb{R}^4_\hbar$ and the Connes-Landi plane …
We deform the interaction between nonrelativistic point particles on a plane and a Chern-Simons field to obtain an action invariant with respect to time-dependent area-preserving diffeomorphisms. The deformed and undeformed Lagrangians are connected by a point transformation leading to a classical Seiberg-Witten map between the corresponding gauge fields. The Schroedinger equation derived by means of Moyal-Weyl quantization from the effective two-particle interaction exhibits - a singular metric, leading to a splitting of the plane into an interior (bag-) and an exterior region, - a singular p…
