In this Letter, we present a new self-consistent theory for the production of the relativistic outflows observed from radio-loud black hole candidates and active galaxies as a result of particle acceleration in hot, viscous accretion disks containing standing, centrifugally-supported isothermal shocks. This is the first work to obtain the structure of such disks for a relatively large value of the Shakura-Sunyaev viscosity parameter ($α=0.1$), and to consider the implications of the shock for the acceleration of relativistic particles in viscous disks. In our approach, the hydrodynamics and the particle acceleration are coupled and the solutions are obtained self-consistently based on a rigorous mathematical method. We find that particle acceleration in the vicinity of the shock can provide enough energy to power the observed relativistic jet in M87.
Based on no-outflow assumption, we investigate steady state, axisymmetric, optically thin accretion flows in spherical coordinates. By comparing the vertically integrated advective cooling rate with the viscous heating rate, we find that the former is generally less than 30% of the latter, which indicates that the advective cooling itself cannot balance the viscous heating. As a consequence, for radiatively inefficient flows with low accretion rates such as $\dot M \la 10^{-3} \dot M_{Edd}$, where $\dot M_{Edd}$ is the Eddington accretion rate, the viscous heating rate will be larger than the …
We study viscous accretion disc around black holes, and all possible accretion solutions, including shocked as well as shock free accretion branches. Shock driven bipolar outflows from a viscous accretion disc around a black hole has been investigated. One can identify two critical viscosity parameters $α_{cl}$ and $α_{cu}$, within which the stationary shocks may occur, for each set of boundary conditions. Adiabatic shock has been found for upto viscosity parameter $α=0.3$, while in presence of dissipation and massloss we have found stationary shock upto $α=0.15$. The mass outflow rate may inc…
We develop and discuss global accretion solutions for viscous ADAF disks containing centrifugally supported isothermal shock waves. The fact that such shocks can exist at all in ADAF disks is a new result. Interestingly, we find that isothermal shocks can form even when the level of viscous dissipation is relatively high. In order to better understand this phenomenon, we explore all possible combinations of the fundamental flow parameters, such as specific energy, specific angular momentum, and viscosity, to obtain the complete family of global solutions. This procedure allows us to identify t…
We simulate shock-free and shocked viscous accretion flow onto a black hole in a two dimensional cylindrical geometry, where initial conditions were chosen from analytical solutions. The simulation code used the Lagrangian Total Variation Diminishing (LTVD) and remap routine, which enabled us to attain high accuracy in capturing shocks and to handle the angular momentum distribution correctly. Inviscid shock-free accretion disk solution produced a thick disk structure, while the viscous shock-free solution attained a Bondi-like structure, but in either case, no jet activity nor any QPO-like ac…
The existence of outflow in accretion flows is confirmed by observations and magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) simulations. In this paper, we study outflows of accretion flows in the presence of resistivity and toroidal magnetic field. The mechanism of energy dissipation in the flow is assumed to be the viscosity and the magnetic diffusivity due to turbulence in the accretion flow. It is also assumed that the magnetic diffusivity and the kinematic viscosity are not constant and vary by position and $α$-prescription is used for them. The influence of outflow emanating from accretion disc is considered…
The afterglows to gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are due to synchrotron emission from shocks generated as an ultra-relativistic outflow decelerates. A forward and a reverse shock will form, however, where emission from the forward shock is well studied as a potential counterpart to gravitational wave-detected neutron star mergers the reverse shock has been neglected. Here, we show how the reverse shock contributes to the afterglow from an off-axis and structured outflow. The off-axis reverse shock will appear as a brightening feature in the rising afterglow at radio frequencies. For bursts at $\sim10…
We present one-dimensional hydrodynamical simulations including radiative losses, of internal shocks in the outflows from classical novae, to explore the role of shocks in powering multi-wavelength emission from radio to gamma-ray wavelengths. Observations support a picture in which the initial phases of some novae generate a slow, equatorially-focused outflow (directly from the outer Lagrange point, or from a circumbinary disk), which then transitions to, or is overtaken by, a faster more isotropic outflow from the white dwarf which collides and shocks the slower flow, powering gamma-ray and …
The termination regions of non-relativistic jets in protostars and supersonic outflows in classical novae are nonthermal emitters. Given the high densities in these systems, radiative shocks are expected to form. However, in the presence of high velocities, the formation of adiabatic shocks is also possible. A case of interest is when the two types of shocks occur simultaneously. These dense jets/outflows are excellent candidates for laboratory experiments as demonstrated by MHD scaling. We aim at studying the combination of adiabatic and radiative shocks in these systems. We focus on determin…

The correlated and coupled dynamics of accretion and outflow around black holes (BHs) are essentially governed by the fundamental laws of conservation as outflow extracts matter, momentum and energy from the accretion region. Here we analyzed a robust form of 2.5-dimensional viscous, resistive, advective magnetized accretion-outflow coupling in BH systems, in the mean field magnetohydrodynamical (MHD) regime. We solve the complete set of coupled MHD conservation equations self-consistently, through invoking a generalized polynomial expansion in two dimensions. We perform a critical analysis of…
Accretion flows having positive specific energy are known to produce outflows and winds which escape to a large distance. According to Two Component Advective Flow (TCAF) model, centrifugal pressure dominated region of the flow just outside the black hole horizon, with or without shocks, acts as the base of this outflow. Electrons from this region are depleted due to the wind and consequently, energy transfer rate due to inverse Comptonization of low energy photons are affected. Specifically, it becomes easier to cool this region and emerging spectrum is softened. Our main goal is to show spec…
Numerical hydrodynamic simulation of inviscid and viscous flows have shown that significant outflows could be produced from the CENtrifugal pressure supported BOundary Layer or CENBOL of an advective disk. However, this barrier is weakened in presence of viscosity, more so, if there are explicit energy dissipations at the boundary layer itself. We study effects of viscosity and energy dissipation theoretically on the outflow rate and show that as the viscosity or energy dissipation (or both) rises, the prospect of formation of outflows is greatly reduced, thereby verifying results obtained thr…
GRB 120308A, a long duration $γ-$ray burst detected by {\it Swift}, was distinguished by a highly-polarized early optical afterglow emission that strongly suggests an ordered magnetic field component in the emitting region. In this work we model the optical and X-ray emission in the reverse and forward shock scenario and show that the strength of the magnetic field in reverse shock region is $\sim 10$ times stronger than that in the forward shock region. Consequently the outflow powering the highly-polarized reverse shock optical emission was mildly-magnetized at a degree $σ\sim$ a few percent…
We investigated flow in Schwarzschild metric, around a non-rotating black hole and obtained self-consistent accretion - ejection solution in full general relativity. We covered the whole of parameter space in the advective regime to obtain shocked, as well as, shock-free accretion solution. We computed the jet streamline using von - Zeipel surfaces and projected the jet equations of motion on to the streamline and solved them simultaneously with the accretion disc equations of motion. We found that steady shock cannot exist {for $α\gsim0.06$} in the general relativistic prescription, but is lo…
We examine the properties of spiral shocks from a steady, adiabatic, non-axisymmetric accretion disk around a compact star in binary. We first time incorporate all the possible influences from binary through adopting the Roche potential and Coriolis forces in the basic conservation equations. In this paper, we assume the spiral shocks to be point-wise self-similar, and the flow is in vertical hydrostatic equilibrium to simplify the study. We also investigate the mass outflow due to the shock compression and apply it to the accreting white dwarf in binary. We find that our model will be benefic…
Magnetic reconnection is commonly perceived to drive flow and particle acceleration in flares of solar, stellar, and astrophysical disk coronae but the relative roles of different acceleration mecha- nisms in a given reconnection environment are not well understood. We show via direct numerical simulations that reconnection outflows produce weak fast shocks, when conditions for fast recon- nection are met and the outflows encounter an obstacle. The associated compression ratios lead to a Fermi acceleration particle spectrum that is significantly steeper than the strong fast shocks commonly stu…
We study the relativistic viscous accretion flows around the Kerr black holes. We present the governing equations that describe the steady state flow motion in full general relativity and solve them in 1.5D to obtain the complete set of global transonic solutions in terms of the flow parameters, namely specific energy (${\cal E}$), specific angular momentum (${\cal L}$) and viscosity ($α$). We obtain a new type of accretion solution which was not reported earlier. Further, we show for the first time to the best of our knowledge that viscous accretion solutions may contain shock waves particula…
The exact solutions for MHD shock waves in an ideal gas are obtained taking into consideration only the viscosity of the gas. In view of an axial magnetic field, the analytical expressions for the particle velocity, temperature, pressure and change-in-entropy within the shock transition region are obtained. The flow variables are numerical analysed to explore the influence of static magnetic field, shock strength, specific heat ratio, initial pressure, initial density and coefficient of viscosity on the flow variables. The findings confirm that thickness of MHD shock front increases with incre…
The discovery of GeV gamma-rays from classical novae indicates that shocks and relativistic particle acceleration are energetically key in these events. Further evidence for shocks comes from thermal keV X-ray emission and an early peak in the radio light curve on a timescale of months with a brightness temperature which is too high to result from freely expanding photo-ionized gas. Paper I developed a one dimensional model for the thermal emission from nova shocks. This work concluded that the shock-powered radio peak cannot be thermal if line cooling operates in the post-shock gas at the rat…
In this paper we lay out a simple set of relationships connecting the dynamics of fast plasma jets to the dynamical state of their ambient media. The objective is to provide a tool kit that can be used to connect the morphologies of radio AGNs in galaxy clusters to the dynamical state of the local ICM. The formalism is intended to apply to jets whether they are relativistic or non-relativistic. Special attention is paid to interactions involving ICM shocks, although the results can be applied more broadly. Our formalism emphasizes the importance of the relative Mach number of the impacting ICM…
This paper examines the mechanism of internal shocks in opaque relativistic outflows, in particular in cosmological gamma-ray bursts. The shocks produce neutrino emission and affect the observed photospheric radiation from the explosion. They develop from internal compressive waves and can be of different types depending on the composition of the outflow: (1) Shocks in "photon gas," with negligible plasma inertia, have a unique structure determined by the force-free condition---zero radiation flux in the plasma rest frame. Radiation dominance over plasma inertia suppresses formation of collisi…
We study the time dependent properties of sub-Keplerian viscous accretion flow around the black holes. We find that rotating matter feels centrifugal barrier on the way towards the black holes and eventually, shock transition is triggered allowing a part of the post-shock matter to eject out as bipolar outflow. This outflowing matters are supposed to be the precursor of relativistic jets. As viscosity is increased, shock becomes unsteady and start to oscillate when viscosity reached its critical value. This causes the inner part of the disk unsteady resulting periodic ejection of matter from t…
We investigate the role of radiative driving of shock ejected bipolar outflows from advective accretion discs in a self consistent manner. Radiations from the inner disc affects the subsonic part of the jet while those from the pre-shock disc affects the supersonic part, and there by constitutes a multi stage acceleration process. We show that the radiation from the inner disc not only accelerate but also increase the mass outflow rate, while the radiation from the pre-shock disc only increases the kinetic energy of the flow. With proper proportions of these two radiations, very high terminal …
We study the dynamic efficiency of conversion of kinetic-to-thermal/magnetic energy of internal shocks in relativistic magnetized outflows. We model internal shocks as being caused by collisions of shells of plasma with the same energy flux and a non-zero relative velocity. The contact surface, where the interaction between the shells takes place, can break up either into two oppositely moving shocks (in the frame where the contact surface is at rest), or into a reverse shock and a forward rarefaction. We find that for moderately magnetized shocks (magnetization $σ\simeq 0.1$), the dynamic eff…
Delayed radio flares of optical tidal disruption events (TDEs) indicate the existence of non-relativistic outflows accompanying TDEs. The interaction of TDE outflows with the surrounding circumnuclear medium creates quasi-perpendicular shocks in the presence of toroidal magnetic fields. Because of the large shock obliquity and large outflow velocity, we find that the shock acceleration induced by TDE outflows generally leads to a steep particle energy spectrum, with the power-law index significantly larger than the "universal" index for a parallel shock. The measured synchrotron spectral indic…
Supersonic interacting flows occurring in phenomena such as protostellar jets give rise to strong shocks, and have been demonstrated in several laboratory experiments. To study such colliding flows, we use the AstroBEAR AMR code to conduct hydrodynamic simulations in three dimensions. We introduce variations in the flow parameters of density, velocity, and cross sectional radius of the colliding flows %radius in order to study the propagation and conical shape of the bow shock formed by collisions between two, not necessarily symmetric, hypersonic flows. We find that the motion of the interact…
Evidence for shocks in nova outflows include (1) multiple velocity components in the optical spectra; (2) keV X-ray emission weeks to months after the outburst; (3) early radio flare on timescales of months, in excess of that predicted from the freely expanding photo-ionized gas; and (4) ~ GeV gamma-rays. We present a 1D model for the shock interaction between the fast nova outflow and a dense external shell (DES) and its associated thermal X-ray, optical, and radio emission. The forward shock is radiative initially when the density of shocked gas is highest, at which times radio emission orig…
The Galactic Center's giant outflows are manifest in three different, non-thermal phenomena: i) the hard-spectrum, γ-ray `Fermi Bubbles' emanating from the nucleus and extending to |b| ~ 50 degrees; ii) the hard-spectrum, total-intensity microwave (~ 20-40 GHz) `Haze' extending to |b| ~ 35 degrees in the lower reaches of the Fermi Bubbles; and iii) the steep spectrum, polarized, `S-PASS' radio (~ 2-20 GHz) Lobes that envelop the Bubbles and extend to |b| ~ 60 degrees. We find that the nuclear outflows inflate a genuine bubble in each Galactic hemisphere that has the classical structure, workin…
