We develop and discuss global accretion solutions for viscous ADAF disks containing centrifugally supported isothermal shock waves. The fact that such shocks can exist at all in ADAF disks is a new result. Interestingly, we find that isothermal shocks can form even when the level of viscous dissipation is relatively high. In order to better understand this phenomenon, we explore all possible combinations of the fundamental flow parameters, such as specific energy, specific angular momentum, and viscosity, to obtain the complete family of global solutions. This procedure allows us to identify the region of the parameter space where isothermal shocks can exist in viscous ADAF disks. The allowed region is maximized in the inviscid case, and it shrinks as the level of viscous dissipation increases. Adopting the canonical value gamma=1.5 for the ratio of specific heats, we find that the shock region disappears completely when the Shakura-Sunyaev viscosity parameter alpha exceeds the critical value ~0.27. This establishes for the first time that steady ADAF disks containing shocks can exist even for relatively high levels of viscous dissipation. If an isothermal shock is present in the disk, it would have important implications for the acceleration of energetic particles that can escape to power the relativistic jets commonly observed around underfed, radio-loud black holes. In two specific applications, we confirm that the kinetic luminosity lost from the disk at the isothermal shock location is sufficient to power the observed relativistic outflows in M87 and Sgr A*.
We simulate shock-free and shocked viscous accretion flow onto a black hole in a two dimensional cylindrical geometry, where initial conditions were chosen from analytical solutions. The simulation code used the Lagrangian Total Variation Diminishing (LTVD) and remap routine, which enabled us to attain high accuracy in capturing shocks and to handle the angular momentum distribution correctly. Inviscid shock-free accretion disk solution produced a thick disk structure, while the viscous shock-free solution attained a Bondi-like structure, but in either case, no jet activity nor any QPO-like ac…
The standard thin accretion disk model has been successfully used to explain the soft X-ray spectra of Galactic black hole systems and perhaps the UV emission of Active Galactic Nuclei. However, radiation pressure dominated disks are known to be viscously unstable and should produce large amplitude oscillations that are typically not observed. Instead, these sources exhibit stochastic variability which may naturally arise due to viscous fluctuations in a turbulent disk. Here we investigate whether these aperiodic viscous fluctuations can stabilize the inner radiation pressure dominated disks a…
We study viscous accretion disc around black holes, and all possible accretion solutions, including shocked as well as shock free accretion branches. Shock driven bipolar outflows from a viscous accretion disc around a black hole has been investigated. One can identify two critical viscosity parameters $α_{cl}$ and $α_{cu}$, within which the stationary shocks may occur, for each set of boundary conditions. Adiabatic shock has been found for upto viscosity parameter $α=0.3$, while in presence of dissipation and massloss we have found stationary shock upto $α=0.15$. The mass outflow rate may inc…
We perform MHD simulations of a thin resistive and viscous accretion disk around a neutron star with the surface dipolar magnetic field of 10$^8$ Gauss. The system evolution is followed during the interval of 500 millisecond pulsar rotations. Matter is accreted through a stable accretion column from the disk onto the star. We also show propagation of the stellar wind through the corona. Analysis of the mass accretion flux and torques on the star shows that the disk reaches the quasi-stationary state.
Based on no-outflow assumption, we investigate steady state, axisymmetric, optically thin accretion flows in spherical coordinates. By comparing the vertically integrated advective cooling rate with the viscous heating rate, we find that the former is generally less than 30% of the latter, which indicates that the advective cooling itself cannot balance the viscous heating. As a consequence, for radiatively inefficient flows with low accretion rates such as $\dot M \la 10^{-3} \dot M_{Edd}$, where $\dot M_{Edd}$ is the Eddington accretion rate, the viscous heating rate will be larger than the …
We present the results of 2D, moving mesh, viscous hydrodynamical simulations of accretion onto merging supermassive black hole (SMBH) binaries. We include viscous heating, shock heating, and radiative cooling, and simulate the transition from the "pre-decoupling" epoch, where the inspiral timescale is longer than the viscous timescale, to the "post-decoupling" epoch, where the inspiral timescale is shorter than the viscous timescale. We find that there is no abrupt halt to the accretion at decoupling, but rather the accretion shows a slow decay, with significant accretion well after the expec…
We study the relativistic viscous accretion flows around the Kerr black holes. We present the governing equations that describe the steady state flow motion in full general relativity and solve them in 1.5D to obtain the complete set of global transonic solutions in terms of the flow parameters, namely specific energy (${\cal E}$), specific angular momentum (${\cal L}$) and viscosity ($α$). We obtain a new type of accretion solution which was not reported earlier. Further, we show for the first time to the best of our knowledge that viscous accretion solutions may contain shock waves particula…
The observed variability of X-ray binaries over a wide range of time-scales can be understood in the framework of a stochastic propagation model, where viscous fluctuations at different radii induce accretion rate variability that propagate inwards to the X-ray producing region. The scenario successfully explains the power spectra, the linear rms-flux relation as well as the time-lag between different energy photons. The predictions of this model have been obtained using approximate analytical solutions or empirically motivated models which take into account the effect of these propagating var…
We investigate aperiodic X-ray flux variability in accreting highly magnetized neutron stars - X-ray pulsars (XRPs). The X-ray variability is largely determined by mass accretion rate fluctuations at the NS surface, which replicate accretion rate fluctuations at the inner radius of the accretion disc. The variability at the inner radius is due to fluctuations arising all over the disc and propagating inwards under the influence of viscous diffusion. The inner radius varies with mean mass accretion rate and can be estimated from the known magnetic field strength and accretion luminosity of XRPs…
Accretion of gas onto already virialized structures like galaxy clusters should give rise to accretion shocks which can potentially accelerate cosmic rays. Here, we use the radio emission detected from Coma cluster and models of evolution of cosmic accretion shocks, to constrain the possible contribution of unresolved galaxy clusters to the cosmic radio background. We assume that Coma is a typical galaxy cluster and that its entire radio emission is produced by cosmic rays accelerated in accretion shocks, making our prediction an upper limit. Our models predict that at lower frequencies accret…
We present the global structure of magnetized advective accretion flow around the rotating black holes in presence of dissipation. By considering accretion flow to be threaded by toroidal magnetic fields and by assuming synchrotron radiative mechanism to be the dominant cooling process, we obtain global transonic accretion solutions in terms of dissipation parameters, such as viscosity ($α_B$), accretion rate (${\dot m}$) and plasma-$β$, respectively. In the rotating magnetized accretion flow, centrifugal barrier is developed in the nearby region of the black hole that triggers the discontinuo…
We explore the global structure of the accretion flow around a Schwarzschild black hole where the accretion disc is threaded by toroidal magnetic fields. The accretion flow is optically thin and advection dominated. Synchrotron radiation is considered to be the active cooling mechanism in the flow. With this, we obtain the global transonic accretion solutions and show that centrifugal barrier in the rotating magnetized accretion flow causes a discontinuous transition of the flow variables in the form of shock waves. The shock properties and the dynamics of the post-shock corona are affected by…
We investigated flow in Schwarzschild metric, around a non-rotating black hole and obtained self-consistent accretion - ejection solution in full general relativity. We covered the whole of parameter space in the advective regime to obtain shocked, as well as, shock-free accretion solution. We computed the jet streamline using von - Zeipel surfaces and projected the jet equations of motion on to the streamline and solved them simultaneously with the accretion disc equations of motion. We found that steady shock cannot exist {for $α\gsim0.06$} in the general relativistic prescription, but is lo…
Truncated accretion disks are commonly invoked to explain the spectro-temporal variability from accreting black holes in both small systems, i.e. state transitions in galactic black hole binaries (GBHBs), and large systems, i.e. low-luminosity active galactic nuclei (LLAGNs). In the canonical truncated disk model of moderately low accretion rate systems, gas in the inner region of the accretion disk occupies a hot, radiatively inefficient phase, which leads to a geometrically thick disk, while the gas in the outer region occupies a cooler, radiatively efficient phase that resides in the standa…
We present the global solutions of low angular momentum, inviscid, advective accretion flow around Kerr-Taub-NUT (KTN) black hole in presence and absence of shock waves. These solutions are obtained by solving the governing equations that describe the relativistic accretion flow in KTN spacetime which is characterized by the Kerr parameter ($a_{\rm k}$) and NUT parameter ($n$). During accretion, rotating flow experiences centrifugal barrier that eventually triggers the discontinuous shock transition provided the relativistic shock conditions are satisfied. In reality, the viability of shocked …
We investigate the behaviour of low angular momentum viscous accretion flows around black holes using Smooth Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) method. Earlier, it has been observed that in a significant part of the energy and angular momentum parameter space, rotating transonic accretion flow undergoes shock transition before entering in to the black hole and a part of the post-shock matter is ejected as bipolar outflows, which are supposed to be the precursor of relativistic jets. In this work, we simulate accretion flows having injection parameters from the inviscid shock parameter space, and stu…
In this Letter, we present a new self-consistent theory for the production of the relativistic outflows observed from radio-loud black hole candidates and active galaxies as a result of particle acceleration in hot, viscous accretion disks containing standing, centrifugally-supported isothermal shocks. This is the first work to obtain the structure of such disks for a relatively large value of the Shakura-Sunyaev viscosity parameter ($α=0.1$), and to consider the implications of the shock for the acceleration of relativistic particles in viscous disks. In our approach, the hydrodynamics and th…
Many statistical properties of X-ray aperiodic variability from accreting compact objects can be explained by the propagating fluctuations model applied to the accretion disc. The mass accretion rate fluctuations originate from variability of viscosity, which arises at every radius and causes local fluctuations of the density. The fluctuations diffuse through the disc and result in local variability of the mass accretion rate, which modulates the X-ray flux from the inner disc in the case of black holes, or from the surface in the case of neutron stars. A key role in the theoretical explanatio…
Explaining variability observed in the accretion flows of black hole X-ray binary systems remains challenging, especially concerning timescales less than, or comparable to, the viscous timescale but much larger than the inner orbital period despite decades of research identifying numerous relevant physical mechanisms. We take a simplified but broad approach to study several mechanisms likely relevant to patterns of variability observed in the persistently high-soft Roche-lobe overflow system LMC X-3. Based on simple estimates and upper bounds, we find that physics beyond varying disk/corona bi…
I present a scenario by which an accretion flow with alternating angular momentum sense on to a newly born neutron star in core collapse supernovae (CCSNe) efficiently amplifies magnetic fields and by that launches jets. The accretion flow of a collapsing core on to the newly born neutron star suffers the spiral standing accretion shock instability (SASI). This instability leads to a stochastically variable angular momentum of the accreted gas, that in turn forms an accretion flow with alternating directions of the angular momentum, hence alternating shear, at any given time. I study the shear…
Observations of the hot gas, which is surrounding Sgr A* and a few other nearby galactic nuclei, imply that mean free paths of electron and proton are comparable to gas capture radius. So, hot accretion flows likely proceed under week collision conditions. As a result thermal conduction by ions has a considerable contribution in transfer of the realized heat in accretion mechanisms. We study a 2D advective accretion disk bathed in a poloidal magnetic field of a central accretor in the presence of thermal conduction. We find self-similar solutions for an axisymmetric, rotating, steady, viscose-…
We use Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics to study viscous accretion flows around a weakly magnetic neutron star. We show the formation of multiple ``boundary" layers in presence of both cooling and viscosity. We find that with the introduction of a small viscosity in a sub-Keplerian flow, much like the wind accretion in HMXBs such as Cir X-1, only a single Normal Boundary Layer (NBOL) forms to adjust the rotational velocity component. With the increase of viscosity, the region extends radially and beyond some critical value, a RAdiative KEplerian Disk/layer (RAKED) forms between the sub-Kepleria…
Variation of mass supply rate from the companion can be smeared out by viscous processes inside an accretion disk. By the time the flow reaches the inner edge, the variation in X-rays needs not reflect the true variation of the rate at the outer edge. However, if the viscosity fluctuates around a mean value, one would expect the viscous time scale also to spread around a mean value. In HMXBs, the size of the viscous Keplerian disk is smaller & thus such a spread could be lower as compared to the LMXBs. If there is an increasing or decreasing trend in viscosity, the interval between enhanced em…
We study the time evolution of a rotating, axisymmetric, viscous accretion flow around black holes using a grid based finite difference method. We use the Shakura-Sunyaev viscosity prescription. However, we compare with the results obtained when all the three independent components of the viscous stress are kept. We show that the centrifugal pressure supported shocks became weaker with the inclusion of viscosity. The shock is formed farther out when the viscosity is increased. When the viscosity is above a critical value, the shock disappears altogether and the flow becomes subsonic and Kepler…
The exact solutions for MHD shock waves in an ideal gas are obtained taking into consideration only the viscosity of the gas. In view of an axial magnetic field, the analytical expressions for the particle velocity, temperature, pressure and change-in-entropy within the shock transition region are obtained. The flow variables are numerical analysed to explore the influence of static magnetic field, shock strength, specific heat ratio, initial pressure, initial density and coefficient of viscosity on the flow variables. The findings confirm that thickness of MHD shock front increases with incre…
The mass accretion rate of transonic spherical accretion flow onto compact objects such as black holes is known as the Bondi accretion rate(Mdot_B), which is determined only by the density and the temperature of gas at the outer boundary. But most work on disc accretion has taken the mass flux to be a given with the relation between that parameter and external conditions left uncertain. Within the framework of a slim alpha disk, we have constructed global solutions of the rotating, viscous hot accretion flow and determined its mass accretion rate as a function of density, temperature, and angu…
In this present article, we study different accretion properties regarding viscous accretion of dark energy. Modified Chaplygin gas is chosen as the dark energy candidate. Viscosity is encountered with the help of Shakura-Sunyaev viscosity parameter. We study sonic speed vs radial distance curves. We compare between adiabatic and dark energy dominated cases and follow that sonic speed falls as we go nearer to the central gravitating object. As viscosity is imposed, a threshold drop in accretion sonic speed is followed. Average rate of fall in accretion sonic speed is increased with black hole'…
The explosion mechanism of core-collapse supernovae has not been fully understood yet but multi-dimensional fluid instabilities such as standing accretion shock instability (SASI) and convection are now believed to be crucial for shock revival. Another multi-dimensional effect that has been recently argued is the asymmetric structures in progenitors, which are induced by violent convections in silicon/oxygen layers that occur before the onset of collapse, as revealed by recent numerical simulations of the last stage of massive star evolutions. Furthermore, it has been also demonstrated numeric…
