Symmetry groups or groupoids of C*-algebras associated to non-Hausdorff spaces are often non-Hausdorff as well. We describe such symmetries using crossed modules of groupoids. We define actions of crossed modules on C*-algebras and crossed products for such actions, and justify these definitions with some basic general results and examples.
We survey the symmetry preserving properties for the dual propinquity, under natural non-degeneracy and equicontinuity conditions. These properties are best formulated using the notion of the covariant propinquity when the symmetries are encoded via the actions of proper monoids and groups. We explore the issue of convergence of Cauchy sequences for the covariant propinquity, which captures, via a compactness result, the fact that proper monoid actions can pass to the limit for the dual propinquity.
Suppose $G$ is a second countable, locally compact Hausdorff groupoid with abelian stabilizer subgroups and a Haar system. We provide necessary and sufficient conditions for the groupoid $C^*$-algebra to have Hausdorff spectrum. In particular we show that the spectrum of $C^*(G)$ is Hausdorff if and only if the stabilizers vary continuously with respect to the Fell topology, the orbit space $G^{(0)}/G$ is Hausdorff, and, given convergent sequences $χ_i\to χ$ and $γ_i\cdotχ_i \to ω$ in the dual stabilizer groupoid $\hat{S}$ where the $γ_i\in G$ act via conjugation, if $χ$ and $ω$ are elements o…
We prove a uniqueness theorem and give a characterization of simplicity for Steinberg algebras associated to non-Hausdorff ample groupoids. We also prove a uniqueness theorem and give a characterization of simplicity for the C*-algebra associated to non-Hausdorff étale groupoids. Then we show how our results apply in the setting of tight representations of inverse semigroups, groups acting on graphs, and self-similar actions. In particular, we show that C*-algebra and the complex Steinberg algebra of the self-similar action of the Grigorchuk group are simple but the Steinberg algebra with coef…
Marc Rieffel had introduced the notion of the quantum Gromov-Hausdorff distance on compact quantum metric spaces and found a sequence of matrix algebras that converges to the space of continuous functions on $2$-sphere in this distance. One finds applications of similar approximations in many places in the theoretical physics literature. In this paper, we have defined a compact quantum metric space structure on the sequence of Toeplitz algebras on generalized Bergman spaces and have proved that the sequence converges to the space of continuous function on odd spheres in the quantum Gromov-Haus…
We investigate the class of unital C*-algebras that admit a unital embedding into every unital C*-algebra of real rank zero, that has no finite-dimensional quotients. We refer to a C*-algebra in this class as an initial object. We show that there are many initial objects, including for example some unital, simple, infinite-dimensional AF-algebras, the Jiang-Su algebra, and the GICAR-algebra. That the GICAR-algebra is an initial object follows from an analysis of Hausdorff moment sequences. It is shown that a dense set of Hausdorff moment sequences belong to a given dense subgroup of the real n…
We show that Bunce-Deddens algebras, which are AT-algebras, are also limits of circle algebras for Rieffel's quantum Gromov-Hausdorff distance, and moreover, form a continuous family indexed by the Baire space. To this end, we endow Bunce-Deddens algebras with a quantum metric structure, a step which requires that we reconcile the constructions of the Latremoliere's Gromov-Hausdorff propinquity and Rieffel's quantum Gromov-Hausdorff distance when working on order-unit quantum metric spaces. This work thus continues the study of the connection between inductive limits and metric limits.
It is proved that the family of equivalence classes of Lip-normed C*-algebras introduced by M. Rieffel, up to isomorphisms preserving the Lip-seminorm, is not complete w.r.t. the matricial quantum Gromov-Hausdorff distance introduced by D. Kerr. This is shown by exhibiting a Cauchy sequence whose limit, which always exists as an operator system, is not completely order isomorphic to any C*-algebra. Conditions ensuring the existence of a C*-structure on the limit are considered, making use of the notion of ultraproduct. More precisely, a necessary and sufficient condition is given for the exist…
We study the groupoid C*-algebras associated to the equivalence relation induced by a quotient map on a locally compact Hausdorff space. This C*-algebra is always a Fell algebra, and if the quotient space is Hausdorff, it is a continuous-trace algebra. We show that the C*-algebra of a locally compact, Hausdorff and principal groupoid is a Fell algebra if and only if the groupoid is one of these relations, extending a theorem of Archbold and Somerset about etale groupoids. The C*-algebras of these relations are, up to Morita equivalence, precisely the Fell algebras with trivial Dixmier-Douady i…
In this paper, we introduce properties including groupoid comparison, pure infiniteness and paradoxical comparison as well as a new algebraic tool called groupoid semigroup for locally compact Hausdorff étale groupoids. We show these new tools help establishing pure infiniteness of reduced groupoid $C^*$-algebras. As an application, we show a dichotomy of stably finiteness against pure infiniteness for reduced groupoid $C^*$-algebras arising from locally compact Hausdorff étale minimal topological principal groupoids. This generalizes the dichotomy obtained by Bönicke-Li and Rainone-Sims. We a…
Quantum tori are limits of finite dimensional C*-algebras for the quantum Gromov-Hausdorff propinquity, a metric defined by the author as a strengthening of Rieffel's quantum Gromov-Hausdorff designed to retain the C*-algebraic structure. In this paper, we propose a proof of the continuity of the family of quantum and fuzzy tori which relies on explicit representations of the C*-algebras rather than on more abstract arguments, in a manner which takes full advantage of the notion of bridge defining the quantum propinquity.
The reduced $C^*$-algebra of the interior of the isotropy in any Hausdorff étale groupoid $G$ embeds as a $C^*$-subalgebra $M$ of the reduced $C^*$-algebra of $G$. We prove that the set of pure states of $M$ with unique extension is dense, and deduce that any representation of the reduced $C^*$-algebra of $G$ that is injective on $M$ is faithful. We prove that there is a conditional expectation from the reduced $C^*$-algebra of $G$ onto $M$ if and only if the interior of the isotropy in $G$ is closed. Using this, we prove that when the interior of the isotropy is abelian and closed, $M$ is a C…
Given a compact metric space $X$ and a local homeomorphism $T:X\to X$ satisfying a local scaling property, we show that the Hausdorff measure on $X$ gives rise to a KMS state on the $C^{*}$-algebra naturally associated to the pair $(X,T)$ such that the inverse temperature coincides with the Hausdorff dimension. We prove that the KMS state is unique under some mild hypothesis. We use our results to describe KMS states on Cuntz algebras, graph algebras, and $C^{*}$-algebras on fractafolds.
For unital AF algebras with faithful tracial states, we provide criteria for convergence in the quantum Gromov-Hausdorff propinquity. For any unital AF algebra, we introduce new Leibniz Lip-norms using quotient norms. Next, we show that any unital AF algebra is the limit of its defining inductive sequence of finite dimensional C*-algebras in quantum propinquity given any Lip-norm defined on the inductive sequence. We also establish sufficient conditions for when a *-isomorphism between two AF algebras produces a quantum isometry in the context of various Lip-norms.
We consider unital simple inductive limits of generalized dimension drop C*-algebras They are so-called ASH-algebras and include all unital simple AH-algebras and all dimension drop $C^*$-algebras. Suppose that $A$ is one of these C*-algebras. We show that $A\otimes Q$ has tracial rank no more than one, where $Q$ is the rational UHF-algebra. As a consequence, we obtain the following classification result: Let $A$ and $B$ be two unital simple inductive limits of generalized dimension drop algebras with no dimension growth. Then $A\cong B$ if and only if they have the same Elliott invariant.
We prove that all the compact metric spaces are in the closure of the class of full matrix algebras for the quantum Gromov-Hausdorff propinquity. We also show that given an action of a compact metrizable group G on a quasi-Leibniz compact quantum metric space (A,Lip), the function associating any closed subgroup of G group to its fixed point C*-subalgebra in A is continuous from the topology of the Hausdorff distance to the topology induced by the propinquity. Our techniques are inspired from our work on AF algebras as quantum metric spaces, as they are based on the use of various types of con…
We define inverse semigroup actions on topological groupoids by partial equivalences. From such actions, we construct saturated Fell bundles over inverse semigroups and non-Hausdorff étale groupoids. We interpret these as actions on C*-algebras by Hilbert bimodules and describe the section algebras of these Fell bundles. Our constructions give saturated Fell bundles over non-Hausdorff étale groupoids that model actions on locally Hausdorff spaces. We show that these Fell bundles are usually not Morita equivalent to an action by automorphisms. That is, the Packer-Raeburn Stabilisation Trick doe…
A distance between von Neumann algebras is introduced, depending on a further norm inducing the $w^*$-topology on bounded sets. Such notion is related both with the Gromov-Hausdorff distance for quantum metric spaces of Rieffel and with the Effros-Marechal topology on the von Neumann algebras acting on a Hilbert space. This construction is tested on the local algebras of free quantum fields endowed with norms related with the Buchholz-Wichmann nuclearity condition, showing the continuity of such algebras w.r.t. the mass parameter.
We construct quantum metric structures on unital AF algebras with a faithful tracial state, and prove that for such metrics, AF algebras are limits of their defining inductive sequences of finite dimensional C*-algebras for the quantum propinquity. We then study the geometry, for the quantum propinquity, of three natural classes of AF algebras equipped with our quantum metrics: the UHF algebras, the Effros-Shen AF algebras associated with continued fraction expansions of irrationals, and the Cantor space, on which our construction recovers traditional ultrametrics. We also exhibit several comp…
Let $G$ be a Hausdorff, étale groupoid that is minimal and topologically principal. We show that $C^*_r(G)$ is purely infinite simple if and only if all the nonzero positive elements of $C_0(G^0)$ are infinite in $C_r^*(G)$. If $G$ is a Hausdorff, ample groupoid, then we show that $C^*_r(G)$ is purely infinite simple if and only if every nonzero projection in $C_0(G^0)$ is infinite in $C^*_r(G)$. We then show how this result applies to $k$-graph $C^*$-algebras. Finally, we investigate strongly purely infinite groupoid $C^*$-algebras.
The complex algebra of an inverse semigroup with finitely many idempotents in each $\mathcal D$-class is stably finite by a result of Munn. This can be proved fairly easily using $C^*$-algebras for inverse semigroups satisfying this condition that have a Hausdorff universal groupoid, or more generally for direct limits of inverse semigroups satisfying this condition and having Hausdorff universal groupoids. It is not difficult to see that a finitely presented inverse semigroup with a non-Hausdorff universal groupoid cannot be a direct limit of inverse semigroups with Hausdorff universal groupo…
Given a not-necessarily Hausdorff, topologically free, twisted étale groupoid $(G, L)$, we consider its "essential groupoid C*-algebra", denoted $C^*_{ess}(G, L)$, obtained by completing $C_c(G, L)$ with the smallest among all C*-seminorms coinciding with the uniform norm on $C_c(G^0)$. The inclusion of C*-algebras $(C_0(G^0), C^*_{ess}(G, L))$ is then proven to satisfy a list of properties characterizing it as what we call a "weak Cartan inclusion". We then prove that every weak Cartan inclusion $(A, B)$, with $B$ separable, is modeled by a topologically free, twisted étale groupoid, as above…
For a finite, strongly connected $k$-graph $Λ$, an Huef, Laca, Raeburn and Sims studied the KMS states associated to the preferred dynamics of the $k$-graph $C^*$-algebra $C^*(Λ)$. They found that these KMS states are determined by the periodicity of $Λ$ and a certain Borel probability measure $M$ on the infinite path space $Λ^\infty$ of $Λ$. Here we consider different dynamics on $C^*(Λ)$, which arise from a functor $y: Λ\to \mathbb{R}_+$ and were first proposed by McNamara in his thesis. We show that the KMS states associated to McNamara's dynamics are again parametrized by the periodicity g…
We develop a matricial version of Rieffel's Gromov-Hausdorff distance for compact quantum metric spaces within the setting of operator systems and unital C*-algebras. Our approach yields a metric space of ``isometric'' unital complete order isomorphism classes of metrized operator systems which in many cases exhibits the same convergence properties as those in the quantum metric setting, as for example in Rieffel's approximation of the sphere by matrix algebras using Berezin quantization. Within the metric subspace of metrized unital C*-algebras we establish the convergence of sequences which …
We generalize Renault's notion of measurewise amenability to actions of second countable, Hausdorff, étale groupoids on separable $C^*$-algebras and show that measurewise amenability characterizes nuclearity of the crossed product whenever the $C^*$-algebra acted on is nuclear. In the more general context of Fell bundles over second countable, Hausdorff, étale groupoids, we introduce a version of Exel's approximation property. We prove that the approximation property implies nuclearity of the cross-sectional algebra whenever the unit bundle is nuclear. For Fell bundles associated to groupoid a…
The classical Hausdorff-Young inequality for locally compact abelian groups states that, for $1\le p\le 2$, the $L^p$-norm of a function dominates the $L^q$-norm of its Fourier transform, where $1/p+1/q=1$. By using the theory of non-commutative $L^p$-spaces and by reinterpreting the Fourier transform, R. Kunze (1958) [resp. M. Terp (1980)] extended this inequality to unimodular [resp. non-unimodular] groups. The analysis of the $L^p$-spaces of the von Neumann algebra of a measured groupoid provides a further extension of the Hausdorff-Young inequality to measured groupoids.
We present examples of non-Hausdorff, etale, essentially principal groupoids for which three results, known to hold in the Hausdorff case, fail. These results are: (A) the subalgebra of continuous functions on the unit space is maximal abelian within the reduced groupoid C*-algebra, (B) every nonzero ideal of the reduced groupoid C*-algebra has a nonzero intersection with the subalgebra of continuous functions on the unit space, and (C) the open support of a normalizer is a bissection.
The statement that one can approximate a quantum torus by some twisted convolution C*-algebra of a (finite) quotient of Z^d can be found in the physics literature dealing with quantum field theory and M-theory. In this paper, we show that indeed the quantum tori are limits of such finite dimensional C*-algebras for the quantum Gromov-Hausdorff distance for compact quantum metric spaces introduced by Rieffel, when one chooses the right metric structures. The proof uses a mild extension of a result by Ramazan on continuous fields of C*-algebras obtained from groupoid C*-algebras, and extends on …
We construct the full and reduced C*-algebras of an ample groupoid from its complex Steinberg algebra. We also show that our construction gives the same C*-algebras as the standard constructions. In the last section, we consider an arbitrary locally compact, second-countable, étale groupoid, possibly non-Hausdorff. Using the techniques developed for Steinberg algebras, we show that every $*$-homomorphism from Connes' space of functions to $B(\mathcal{H})$ is automatically I-norm bounded. Previously, this was only known for Hausdorff groupoids.
On looking at the literature associated with string theory one finds statements that a sequence of matrix algebras converges to the 2-sphere (or to other spaces). There is often careful bookkeeping with lengths, which suggests that one is dealing with ``quantum metric spaces''. We show how to make these ideas precise by means of Berezin quantization using coherent states. We work in the general setting of integral coadjoint orbits for compact Lie groups.
Gelfand-Naimark duality (Commutative $C^*$-algebras $\equiv$ Locally compact Hausdorff spaces) is extended to $C^*$-algebras $\equiv$ Quotient maps on locally compact Hausdorff spaces. Using this duality, we give for an \emph{arbitrary} bounded operator on a complex Hilbert space of several dimensions, a functional calculus and the existence theorem for nontrivial invariant subspace.
We show that the rotation algebras are limit of matrix algebras in a very strong sense of convergence for algebras with additional Lipschitz structure. Our results generalize to higher dimensional noncommutative tori and operator valued coefficients. In contrast to previous results by Rieffel, Li, Kerr, and Latrémolière we use Lipschitz norms induced by the `carré du champ' of certain natural dynamical systems, including the heat semigroup.
We extend the classical Stone duality between zero dimensional compact Hausdorff spaces and Boolean algebras. Specifically, we simultaneously remove the zero dimensionality restriction and extend to étale groupoids, obtaining a duality with an elementary class of inverse semigroups.
Let G be a (not necessarily Hausdorff) locally compact groupoid. We introduce a notion of properness for G, which is invariant under Morita-equivalence. We show that any generalized morphism between two locally compact groupoids which satisfies some properness conditions induces a C*-correspondence from $C*_r(G_1)$ to $C^*_r(G_2)$, and thus two Morita equivalent groupoids have Morita-equivalent $C^*$-algebras.
We study the interplay between Steinberg algebras and partial skew rings: For a partial action of a group in a Hausdorff, locally compact, totally disconnected topological space, we realize the associated partial skew group ring as a Steinberg algebra (over the transformation groupoid attached to the partial action). We then apply this realization to characterize diagonal preserving isomorphisms of partial skew group rings, over commutative algebras, in terms of continuous orbit equivalence of the associated partial actions. Finally, we show that any Steinberg algebra, associated to a Hausdorf…
Using Voiculescu's notion of a matricial microstate we introduce fractal dimensions and entropies for finite sets of selfadjoint operators in a tracial von Neumann algebra. We show that they possess properties similar to their classical predecessors. We relate the new quantities to free entropy and free entropy dimension and show that a modified version of free Hausdorff dimension is an algebraic invariant. We compute the free Hausdorff dimension in the cases where the set generates a finite dimensional algebra or where the set consists of a single selfadjoint. We show that the free Hausdorff …
Gelfand duality between unital commutative C*-algebras and Compact Hausdorff spaces is extended to all unital C*-algebras, where the dual objects are what we call compact Hausdorff quantum spaces. We apply this result to obtain, a characterization of unitary groups of C*-algebras, and, for arbitrary bounded Hilbert space operators, (i) A spectral theorem cum continuous functional calculus, and (ii) A proof of the general Invariant Subspace Theorem. Also described is a nonabelian generalization of Pontryagin duality of abelian locally compact groups.
The notion of good spectral triple is initiated. We prove firstly that any regular spectral triple may be embedded in a good spectral triple, so that, in non-commutative geometry, we can restricts to deal only with good spectral triples. Given a good spectral triple K=(A,H,D), we prove that A is naturally endowed with a topology, called the K-topology, making it into an unital Frechet pre C*-algebra, and that the group Inv(A) of its invertible elements has a canonical structure of Frechet Lie group of Campbell-Baker-Hausdorff type open in its Lie algebra A; moreover, for any n>0 one has that K…
After a summary on module algebra actions of C^*-weak Hopf algebras we outline the proof of a reconstruction theorem stating that every finite index depth 2 inclusion N < M of unital C^*-algebras with finite dimensional centers is isomorphic to the invariant subalgebra inclusion M^A < M with respect to a regular weak Hopf algebra action. The proof uses the language of C^*-2-categories.
