Gelfand-Naimark duality (Commutative $C^*$-algebras $\equiv$ Locally compact Hausdorff spaces) is extended to $C^*$-algebras $\equiv$ Quotient maps on locally compact Hausdorff spaces. Using this duality, we give for an \emph{arbitrary} bounded operator on a complex Hilbert space of several dimensions, a functional calculus and the existence theorem for nontrivial invariant subspace.

Noncommutative Gelfand Duality and Applications I: The Existence of invariant subspaces

Gelfand duality between unital commutative C*-algebras and Compact Hausdorff spaces is extended to all unital C*-algebras, where the dual objects are what we call compact Hausdorff quantum spaces. We apply this result to obtain, a characterization of unitary groups of C*-algebras, and, for arbitrary bounded Hilbert space operators, (i) A spectral theorem cum continuous functional calculus, and (ii) A proof of the general Invariant Subspace Theorem. Also described is a nonabelian generalization of Pontryagin duality of abelian locally compact groups.

Gelfand-type duality for commutative von Neumann algebras

We show that the following five categories are equivalent: (1) the opposite category of commutative von Neumann algebras; (2) compact strictly localizable enhanced measurable spaces; (3) measurable locales; (4) hyperstonean locales; (5) hyperstonean spaces. This result can be seen as a measure-theoretic counterpart of the Gelfand duality between commutative unital C*-algebras and compact Hausdorff topological spaces.

Approximately invertible elements in non-unital normed algebras

We introduce a concept of approximately invertible elements in non-unital normed algebras which is, on one side, a natural generalization of invertibility when having approximate identities at hand, and, on the other side, it is a direct extension of topological invertibility to non-unital algebras. Seminormed $\ast$-subalgebras of $\ell^{\infty}(X)$

Arbitrary representations of a commutative unital ($\ast$-) $\mathbb{F}$-algebra $A$ as a subalgeba of $\mathbb{F}^X$ are considered, where $\mathbb{F}=\mathbb{C}$ or $\mathbb{R}$ and $X\neq\emptyset$. Applications of the Growth Characteristics Induced by the Spectral Distance

Let $A$ be a complex unital Banach algebra. Using a connection between the spectral distance and the growth characteristics of a certain entire map into $A$, we derive a generalization of Gelfand's famous Power Boundedness Theorem. Elaborating on these ideas, with the help of a Phragmén-Lindelöf device for subharmonic functions, it is then shown, as the main result, that two normal elements of a $C^*$-algebra are equal if and only if they are quasinilpotent equivalent.
