Let $A$ be a Banach algebra. We call a pair $(G, B)$ a Gelfand theory for $A$ if the following axioms are satisfied: (G 1) $B$ is a $C^\ast$-algebra, and $G : A \to B$ is a homomorphism; (G 2) the assignment $L \mapsto G^{-1}(L)$ is a bijection between the sets of maximal modularleft ideals of $B$ and $A$, respectively; (G 3) for each maximal modular left ideal $L$ of $B$, the linear map $G_L : A / G^{-1}(L) \to B /L $ induced by $B$ has dense range. The Gelfand theory of a commutative Banach algebra is easily seen to be characterized by these axioms. Gelfand theories of arbitrary Banach algebras enjoy many of the properties of commutative Gelfand theory. We show that unital, homogeneous Banach algebras always have a Gelfand theory. For liminal $C^\ast$-algebras with discrete spectrum, we show that the identity is the only Gelfand theory (up to an appropriate notion of equivalence).
Several new characterizations of the Gelfand-Phillips property are given. We define a strong version of the Gelfand-Phillips property and prove that a Banach space has this stronger property iff it embeds into $c_0$. For an infinite compact space $K$, the Banach space $C(K)$ has the strong Gelfand-Phillips property iff $C(K)$ is isomorphic to $c_0$ iff $K$ is countable and has finite scattered height.
The representation theorems of Gelfand and Kakutani for commutative C*-algebras and AM- and AL-spaces are the basis for the Koopman linearization of topological and measure-preserving dynamical systems. In this article we prove versions of these results for dynamics on topological and measurable Banach bundles and the corresponding weighted Koopman representations on Banach modules.
Let $\mathcal{A}$ be a Banach algebra of bounded holomorphic functions on the open unit ball $B_X$ of a complex Banach space $X$. Considering the Gelfand transform image $\widehat{\mathcal{A}}$ of the Banach algebra $\mathcal{A}$, which is a uniform algebra on the spectrum of $\mathcal{A}$, we obtain an explicit description of the Shilov boundary for $\widehat{\mathcal{A}}$ for classical Banach spaces $X$ in the case where $\mathcal{A}$ is a certain Banach algebra, for instance, $\mathcal{A}_\infty (B_X)$, $\mathcal{A}_u (B_X)$ or $\mathcal{A}_{wu} (B_X)$. Some possible application of our resu…
The $p$-Gelfand Phillips property ($1\le p<\infty$) is studied in spaces of operators. Dunford - Pettis type like sets are studied in Banach spaces. We discuss Banach spaces $X$ with the property that every $p$-convergent operator $T:X\to Y$ is weakly compact, for every Banach space $Y$.
The article is devoted to quasilinear operators in spaces over quaternions and octonions. Spectral theory of bounded and unbounded operators is investigated. Analogs of C^* algebras are defined and studied. Among main results are analogs of the Gelfand-Mazur, Stone, Gelfand-Naimark-Segal, von Neumann, Kaplansky, etc. theorems, but here over the skew field of quaternions and the octonion algebra.
We show that the following five categories are equivalent: (1) the opposite category of commutative von Neumann algebras; (2) compact strictly localizable enhanced measurable spaces; (3) measurable locales; (4) hyperstonean locales; (5) hyperstonean spaces. This result can be seen as a measure-theoretic counterpart of the Gelfand duality between commutative unital C*-algebras and compact Hausdorff topological spaces.
The classical Gelfand--Naimark theorems provide important insight into the structure of general and of commutative C*-algebras. It is shown that these can be generalized to certain ordered *-algebras. More precisely, for $σ$-bounded closed ordered *-algebras a faithful representation as operators is constructed. Similarly, for commutative such algebras, a faithful representation as complex-valued functions is constructed if an additional necessary regularity condition is fulfilled. These results generalize the Gelfand--Naimark representation theorems to classes of *-algebras larger than C*-alg…
We introduce a category of stochastic maps (certain Markov kernels) on compact Hausdorff spaces, construct a stochastic analogue of the Gelfand spectrum functor, and prove a stochastic version of the commutative Gelfand-Naimark Theorem. This relates concepts from algebra and operator theory to concepts from topology and probability theory. For completeness, we review stochastic matrices, their relationship to positive maps on commutative $C^*$-algebras, and the Gelfand-Naimark Theorem. No knowledge of probability theory nor $C^*$-algebras is assumed and several examples are drawn from physics.
In this paper we study the maximal ideals in a commutative ring of bicomplex numbers and then we describe the maximal ideals in a bicomplex algebra. We found that the kernel of a nonzero multiplicative BC-linear functional in a commutative bicomplex Banach algebra need not be a maximal ideal. Finally, we introduce the notion of bicomplex division algebra and generalize the Gelfand-Mazur theorem for the bicomplex division Banach algebra.
We present and study commutative Banach algebras generated by Toeplitz operators with generalized quasi-radial pseudo-homogeneous symbols acting on the Bergman space over the unit ball. We develop the Gelfand theory of these algebras and give some structural information about them. In particular, we provide a description of the radical of these algebras. This paper generalizes and completes the results from previous works related to Toeplitz operators with quasi-radial quasi-homogeneous symbols.
The main objects under study are quotients of multiplier algebras of certain complete Nevanlinna--Pick spaces, examples of which include the Drury--Arveson space on the ball and the Dirichlet space on the disc. We are particularly interested in the non-commutative Choquet boundaries for these quotients. Arveson's notion of hyperrigidity is shown to be detectable through the essential normality of some natural multiplication operators, thus extending previously known results on the Arveson--Douglas conjecture. We also highlight how the non-commutative Choquet boundaries of these quotients are i…
Gelfand-Naimark duality (Commutative $C^*$-algebras $\equiv$ Locally compact Hausdorff spaces) is extended to $C^*$-algebras $\equiv$ Quotient maps on locally compact Hausdorff spaces. Using this duality, we give for an \emph{arbitrary} bounded operator on a complex Hilbert space of several dimensions, a functional calculus and the existence theorem for nontrivial invariant subspace.
Gelfand duality between unital commutative C*-algebras and Compact Hausdorff spaces is extended to all unital C*-algebras, where the dual objects are what we call compact Hausdorff quantum spaces. We apply this result to obtain, a characterization of unitary groups of C*-algebras, and, for arbitrary bounded Hilbert space operators, (i) A spectral theorem cum continuous functional calculus, and (ii) A proof of the general Invariant Subspace Theorem. Also described is a nonabelian generalization of Pontryagin duality of abelian locally compact groups.
This paper is a continuation of our study of compact, power compact, Riesz, and quasicompact endomorphisms of commutative Banach algebras. Previously it has been shown that if $B$ is a unital commutative semisimple Banach algebra with connected character space, and $T$ is a unital endomorphism of $B$, then $T$ is quasicompact if and only if the operators $T^n$ converge in operator norm to a rank-one unital endomorphism of $B$. In this note the discussion is extended in two ways: we discuss endomorphisms of commutative Banach algebras which are semiprime and not necessarily semisimple; we also …
Let $A$ and $B$ be unital semi-simple commutative Banach algebras. In this paper we study two-variable polynomials $p$ which satisfy the following property: a map $T$ from $A$ onto $B$ such that the equality \[ σ(p(Tf,Tg))=σ(p(f,g)), \quad f,g \in A \] holds is an algebra isomorphism.
We consider the compactness of derivations from commutative Banach algebras into their dual modules. We show that if there are no compact derivations from a commutative Banach algebra, $A$, into its dual module, then there are no compact derivations from $A$ into any symmetric $A$-bimodule; we also prove analogous results for weakly compact derivations and for bounded derivations of finite rank. We then characterise the compact derivations from the convolution algebra $\ell^1(\Z_+)$ to its dual. Finally, we give an example (due to J. F. Feinstein) of a non-compact, bounded derivation from a un…
Let $A$ be a complex, commutative unital Banach algebra. We introduce two notions of exponential reducibility of Banach algebra tuples and present an analogue to the Corach-Suárez result on the connection between reducibility in $A$ and in $C(M(A))$. Our methods are of an analytical nature. Necessary and sufficient geometric/topological conditions are given for reducibility (respectively reducibility to the principal component of $U_n(A)$) whenever the spectrum of $A$ is homeomorphic to a subset of $\mathbb C^n$.
An elegant but elementary result of Wolff from 1921, when interpreted in terms of Banach algebras, shows that it is possible to find a sequence of distinct characters $ϕ_n$ on the disc algebra and an $\ell_1$ sequence of complex numbers $λ_n$, not all zero, such that $\sum_{n=1}^\infty λ_n ϕ_n =0.$ We observe that, even for general commutative, unital Banach algebras, this is not possible if the closure of the countable set of characters has no perfect subsets.
In this paper, we extend the Banach-Stone theorem to the non commutative case, i.e, we prove that the structure of the liminal $C^{*}$-algebras $\cal A$ determines the topology of its primitive ideal space.
We prove that von Neumann algebras and separable nuclear $C^*$-algebras are stable for the Banach-Mazur cb-distance. A technical step is to show that unital almost completely isometric maps between $C^*$-algebras are almost multiplicative and almost selfadjoint. Also as an intermediate result, we compare the Banach-Mazur cb-distance and the Kadison-Kastler distance. Finally, we show that if two $C^*$-algebras are close enough for the cb-distance, then they have at most the same length.
Benyamini and Lindenstrauss mention in their monograph \emph{Geometric nonlinear functional analysis Vol. 1., American Mathematical Society Colloquium Publications, 48. American Mathematical Society, Providence, RI, 2000} that there is no known example of a non-commutative uniform Banach group. Prassidis and Weston also asked whether there is a non-commutative example. We answer this problem affirmatively. We construct a non-commutative uniform Banach group which has the free group of countably many generators as a dense subgroup. Moreover, we show that our example is a free one-generated unif…
Polyadic arithmetics is a branch of mathematics related to $p$--adic theory. The aim of the present paper is to show that there are very close relations between polyadic arithmetics and the classic theory of commutative Banach algebras. Namely, let $\ms A$ be the algebra consisting of all complex periodic functions on $\Z$ with the uniform norm. Then the polyadic topological ring can be defined as the ring of all characters $\ms A\to\C$ with convolution operations and the Gelfand topology.
The concepts of Riesz type and cotype of a given Banach space are extended to a non-commutative setting. First, the Banach space is replaced by an operator space. The notion of quantized orthonormal system, which plays the role of the orthonormal system in the classical setting, is then defined. The Fourier type and cotype of an operator space with respect to a non-commutative compact group fit in this context. Also, the quantized analogs of Rademacher and Gaussian systems are treated. All this is used to obtain an operator space version of the classical theorem of Kwapień characterizing Hilbe…
In this paper, we extend the Banach-Stone theorem to the non commutative case, i.e, we give a partial answere to the question 2.1 of [13], and we prove that the structure of the postliminal C*-algebras A determines the topology of its primitive ideals space.
We develop a functional calculus for $d$-tuples of non-commuting elements in a Banach algebra. The functions we apply are free analytic functions, that is nc functions that are bounded on certain polynomial polyhedra.
Let (N,K) be a nilpotent Gelfand pair, i.e., N is a nilpotent Lie group, K a compact group of automorphisms of N, and the algebra D(N)^K of left-invariant and K-invariant differential operators on N is commutative. In these hypotheses, N is necessarily of step at most two. We say that (N,K) satisfies Vinberg's condition if K acts irreducibly on $n/[n,n]$, where n= Lie(N). Fixing a system D of d formally self-adjoint generators of D(N)^K, the Gelfand spectrum of the commutative convolution algebra L^1(N)^K can be canonically identified with a closed subset S_D of R^d. We prove that, on a nilpot…
Utilizing the notion of uniform equicontinuity for sequences of functions with the values in the space of measurable operators, we present a non-commutative version of the Banach Principle for $L^\infty$.
We show that if $\mathfrak{A}$ is a commutative complex non-unital Banach Algebra with norm $\|\cdot\|$, then $\|\cdot\|$ is regular on $\mathfrak{A}$ if and only if $\|\cdot\|_{op}$ is a norm on $\mathfrak{A}\oplus \mathbb{C}$ and $\mathfrak{A}\oplus\mathbb{C}$ is a commutative complex Banach Algebra with respect to $\|\cdot\|_{op}$.
A class of commutative Banach algebras which satisfy a Bochner-Schoenberg-Eberlein-type inequality was introduced by Takahasi and Hatori. We generalize this property for the commutative Frechet algebra A. Furthermore, some of the main results in the class of Banach algebras, will be verified and generalized for the Frechet case.
In a recent paper of Benson and Symonds, a new invariant was introduced for modular representations of a finite group. An interpretation was given as a spectral radius with respect to a Banach algebra completion of the representation ring. Our purpose here is to take these notions further, and investigate the structure of the resulting Banach algebras. Some of the material in that paper is repeated here in greater generality, and for clarity of exposition. We give an axiomatic definition of an abstract representation ring, and representation ideal. The completion is then a commutative Banach a…
In 1971, Grauert and Remmert proved that a commutative, complex, Noetherian Banach algebra is necessarily finite-dimensional. More precisely, they proved that a commutative, complex Banach algebra has finite dimension over $\C$ whenever all the closed ideals in the algebra are (algebraically) finitely generated. In 1974, Sinclair and Tullo obtained a non-commutative version of this result. In 1978, Ferreira and Tomassini improved the result of Grauert and Remmert by showing that the statement is also true if one replaces `closed ideals' by `maximal ideals in the Šilov boundary of $A$'. We shal…
Let $\cal A$ and $\cal B$ be Banach algebras. A linear map $T:{\cal A} \rightarrow {\cal B}$ is called separating or disjointness preserving if $ab=0$ implies $Ta\;Tb = 0$ for all $a,b\in {\cal A}$. In this paper, we study a new class of regular Tauberian algebras and prove that some well-known Banach algebras in harmonic analysis belong to this class. We show that a bijective separating map between these algebras turns out to be continuous and the maximal ideal spaces of underlying algebras are homeomorphic. By imposing extra conditions on these algebras, we find a more thorough characterizat…
Let $A$ be a commutative semisimple Arens regular unital Banach algebra. The correlation between the BSE-property of the Banach algebra $A$ and its second duals are assessed. It is found and approved that if $A$ is a BSE-algebra, then so is $A^{**}$. The opposite correlation will hold in certain conditions. The correlation of the BSE-norm property of the Banach algebra and its second dual are assessed and examined. It is revealed that, if $A$ is a commutative Arens regular unital Banach algebra where $A^{**}$ is semisimple, then, $A$ and $A^{**}$ are BSE-norm algebra.
Let $A$ and $B$ be unital semisimple commutative Banach algebras and $T$ a map from the invertible group $A^{-1}$ onto $B^{-1}$. Linearity and multiplicativity of the map are not assumed. We consider the hypotheses on $T$: (1) $σ(TfTg)=σ(fg)$; (2) $σ_π(TfTg-α)\cap σ_π(fg-α)\ne \emptyset$; (3) $\mathrm{r} (TfTg-α)=\mathrm{r}(fg-α)$ hold for some non-zero complex number $α$ and for every $f, g\in A^{-1}$, where $σ(\cdot)$ (resp. $σ_π(\cdot)$) denotes the (resp. peripheral) spectrum and $\rr(\cdot)$ denotes the spectral radius. Under each of the hypotheses we show representations for $T$ and unde…
It is proved that a commutative algebra $A$ of operators in a reflexive real Banach space has an invariant subspace if each operator $T\in A$ satisfies the condition $$\|1- \varepsilon T^2\|_e \le 1 + o(\varepsilon) \text{ when } \varepsilon\searrow 0,$$ where $\|\cdot\|_e$ is the essential norm. This implies the existence of an invariant subspace for every commutative family of essentially selfadjoint operators in a real Hilbert space.
It is proved that a commutative algebra $A$ of operators on a reflexive real Banach space has an invariant subspace if each operator $T\in A$ satisfies the condition $$\|1- \varepsilon T^2\|_e \le 1 + o(\varepsilon) \text{ when } \varepsilon\searrow 0,$$ where $\|\cdot\|_e$ is the essential norm. This implies the existence of an invariant subspace for every commutative family of essentially selfadjoint operators on a real Hilbert space.
We give examples showing that the usual Artin Approximation theorems valid for convergent series over a field are no longer true for convergent series over a commutative Banach algebra. In particular we construct an example of a commutative integral Banach algebra $R$ such that the ring of formal power series over $R$ is not flat over the ring of convergent power series over $R$.
Let N and M be von Neumann algebras. It is proved that L^p(N) does not Banach embed in L^p(M) for N infinite, M finite, 1 < or = p < 2. The following considerably stronger result is obtained (which implies this, since the Schatten p-class C_p embeds in L^p(N) for N infinite). Theorem: Let 1 < or = p < 2 and let X be a Banach space with a spanning set (x_{ij}) so that for some C < or = 1: (i) any row or column is C-equivalent to the usual ell^2-basis; (ii) (x_{i_k,j_k}) is C-equivalent to the usual ell^p-basis, for any i_1 < i_2 < ... and j_1 < j_2 < ... . Then X is not isomorphic to a subspace…
Let $A$ be a real commutative Banach algebra with unity. Let $a_0\in A\setminus\{0\}$. Let $\mathbb Z a_0:=\{na_0\}_{n\in \mathbb Z}$. Then, $\mathbb Z a_0$ is a discrete subgroup of $A$. For any $n\in \mathbb Z$, the Frechet derivative of the mapping $$x \, \in \, A \ \ \ \mapsto \ \ \ x+na_0 \, \in \, A$$ is the identity map on $A$ and, especially, an $A$-linear transformation on $A$. So, the quotient group $A/(\mathbb Z a_0)$ is a $1$-dimensional $A$-manifold and the covering projection $$x \, \in \, A \ \ \ \mapsto \ \ \ x+\mathbb Z a_0 \, \in \, A/(\mathbb Z a_0)$$ is an $A$-map. We call …
We collect several foundational results regarding the interaction between locally compact spaces, probability spaces and probability algebras, and commutative $C^*$-algebras and von Neumann algebras equipped with traces, in the "uncountable" setting in which no separability, metrizability, or standard Borel hypotheses are placed on these spaces and algebras. In particular, we review the Gelfand dualities and Riesz representation theorems available in this setting. We also present a canonical model that represents probability algebras as compact Hausdorff probability spaces in a completely func…
It is proved that a norm-decreasing homomorphism of commutative Banach algebras is an effective descent morphism for Banach modules if and only if it is a weak retract.
For a space $X$ denote by $C_b(X)$ the Banach algebra of all continuous bounded scalar-valued functions on $X$ and denote by $C_0(X)$ the set of all elements in $C_b(X)$ which vanish at infinity. We prove that certain Banach subalgebras $H$ of $C_b(X)$ are isometrically isomorphic to $C_0(Y)$, for some unique (up to homeomorphism) locally compact Hausdorff space $Y$. The space $Y$ is explicitly constructed as a subspace of the Stone--Čech compactification of $X$. The known construction of $Y$ enables us to examine certain properties of either $H$ or $Y$ and derive results not expected to be de…
