The addition of tunnel barriers to open chaotic systems, as well as representing more general physical systems, leads to much richer semiclassical dynamics. In particular, we present here a complete semiclassical treatment for these systems, in the regime where Ehrenfest time effects are negligible and for times shorter than the Heisenberg time. To start we explore the trajectory structures which contribute to the survival probability, and find results that are also in agreement with random matrix theory. Then we progress to the treatment of the probability current density and are able to show, using recursion relation arguments, that the continuity equation connecting the current density to the survival probability is satisfied to all orders in the semiclassical approximation. Following on, we also consider a correlation function of the scattering matrix, for which we have to treat a new set of possible trajectory diagrams. By simplifying the contributions of these diagrams, we show that the results obtained here are consistent with known properties of the scattering matrix. The correlation function can be trivially connected to the ac and dc conductances, quantities of particular interest for which finally we present a semiclassical expansion.
The semiclassical structure of resonance states of classically chaotic scattering systems with partial escape is investigated. We introduce a local randomization on phase space for the baker map with escape, which separates the smallest multifractal scale from the scale of the Planck cell. This allows for deriving a semiclassical description of resonance states based on a local random vector model and conditional invariance. We numerically demonstrate that the resulting classical measures perfectly describe resonance states of all decay rates $γ$ for the randomized baker map. By decreasing the…
An initial coherent state is propagated exactly by a kicked quantum Hamiltonian and its associated classical stroboscopic map. The classical trajectories within the initial state are regular for low kicking strengths, then bifurcate and become mainly chaotic as the kicking parameter is increased. Time-evolution is tracked using classical, quantum and semiclassical Wigner functions, obtained via the Herman-Kluk propagator. Quantitative comparisons are also included and carried out from probability marginals and autocorrelation functions. Sub-Planckian classical structure such as small stability…
Despite considerable progress during the last decades in devising a semiclassical theory for classically chaotic quantum systems a quantitative semiclassical understanding of their dynamics at late times (beyond the so-called Heisenberg time $T_H$) is still missing. This challenge, corresponding to resolving spectral structures on energy scales below the mean level spacing, is intimately related to the quest for semiclassically restoring quantum unitarity, which is reflected in real-valued spectral determinants. Guided through insights for quantum graphs we devise a periodic-orbit resummation …
We present a semiclassical approach to n-point spectral correlation functions of quantum systems whose classical dynamics is chaotic, for arbitrary n. The basic ingredients are sets of periodic orbits that have nearly the same action and therefore provide constructive interference. We calculate explicitly the first correlation functions, to leading orders in their energy arguments, for both unitary and orthogonal symmetry classes. The results agree with corresponding predictions from random matrix theory, thereby giving solid support to the conjecture of universality.

The out-of-time-order correlator (OTOC), recently analyzed in several physical contexts, is studied for low-dimensional chaotic systems through semiclassical expansions and numerical simulations. The semiclassical expansion for the OTOC yields a leading-order contribution in $\hbar^2$ that is exponentially increasing with time within an intermediate, temperature-dependent, time-window. The growth-rate in such a regime is governed by the Lyapunov exponent of the underlying classical system and scales with the square-root of the temperature.
We consider the problem of a semiclassical description of quantum chaotic transport, when a tunnel barrier is present in one of the leads. Using a semiclassical approach formulated in terms of a matrix model, we obtain transport moments as power series in the reflection probability of the barrier, whose coefficients are rational functions of the number of open channels M. Our results are therefore valid in the quantum regime and not only when $M\gg 1$. The expressions we arrive at are not identical with the corresponding predictions from random matrix theory, but are in fact much simpler. Both…
Measurement choices in weakly-measured open quantum systems can affect quantum trajectory chaos. We consider this scenario semi-classically and show that measurement acts as nonlinear generalized fluctuation and dissipation forces. These can alter effective dissipation in the quantum spread variables and hence change the dynamics, such that measurement choices on the coupled quantum dynamics can enhance quantum effects and make the dynamics chaotic, for example. This analysis explains the measurement-dependence of quantum chaos at a variety of parameter settings, and in particular we demonstra…
