The purpose of the present article is the study of duals of functional codes on algebraic surfaces. We give a direct geometrical description of them, using differentials. Even if this geometrical description is less trivial, it can be regarded as a natural extension to surfaces of the result asserting that the dual of a functional code on a curve is a differential code. We study the parameters of such codes and state a lower bound for their minimum distance. Using this bound, one can study some examples of codes on surfaces, and in particular surfaces with Picard number 1 like elliptic quadrics or some particular cubic surfaces. The parameters of some of the studied codes reach those of the best known codes up to now.

We investigate the geometry of the support of small weight codewords of dual algebraic geometric codes on smooth complete intersections by applying the powerful tools recently developed by Alain Couvreur. In particular, by restricting ourselves to the case of Hermitian codes, we recover and extend previous results obtained by the second named author joint with Marco Pellegrini and Massimiliano Sala.
In this paper we give a simpler proof of a deep theorem proved by Pellikan, Shen and van Wee that all linear codes are weakly algebraic-geometric using a theorem of B.Poonen.
In this article, the minimum distance of the dual $C^{\bot}$ of a functional code $C$ on an arbitrary dimensional variety $X$ over a finite field $\F_q$ is studied. The approach consists in finding minimal configurations of points on $X$ which are not in "general position". If $X$ is a curve, the result improves in some situations the well-known Goppa designed distance.
For Kummer extensions defined by $y^m = f (x)$, where $f (x)$ is a separable polynomial over the finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$, we compute the number of Weierstrass gaps at two totally ramified places. For many totally ramified places we give a criterion to find pure gaps at these points and present families of pure gaps. We then apply our results to construct many points algebraic geometric codes with good parameters.
Security of linear ramp secret sharing schemes can be characterized by the relative generalized Hamming weights of the involved codes. In this paper we elaborate on the implication of these parameters and we devise a method to estimate their value for general one-point algebraic geometric codes. As it is demonstrated, for Hermitian codes our bound is often tight. Furthermore, for these codes the relative generalized Hamming weights are often much larger than the corresponding generalized Hamming weights.
For a linear code $\cC$ of length $n$ and dimension $k$, Wolf noticed that the trellis state complexity $s(\cC)$ of $\cC$ is upper bounded by $w(\cC):=\min(k,n-k)$. In this paper we point out some new lower bounds for $s(\cC)$. In particular, if $\cC$ is an Algebraic Geometric code, then $s(\cC)\geq w(\cC)-(g-a)$, where $g$ is the genus of the underlying curve and $a$ is the abundance of the code.
Real algebraic geometry adapts the methods and ideas from (complex) algebraic geometry to study the real solutions to systems of polynomial equations and polynomial inequalities. As it is the real solutions to such systems modeling geometric constraints that are physically meaningful, real algebraic geometry is a core mathematical input for geometric constraint systems.
We discover a class of projective self-dual algebraic varieties. Namely, we consider actions of isotropy groups of complex symmetric spaces on the projectivized nilpotent varieties of isotropy modules. For them, we classify all orbit closures $X$ such that $X=\check X$ where $\check X$ is the projective dual of $X$. We give algebraic criteria of projective self-duality for the considered orbit closures.
We obtain a global resolution for the sheaf of differential operators on smooth geometric quotients of free linear actions of algebraic groups. The terms of our resolution involve symmetric and alternating powers of vector bundles easily constructed geometrically from the algebraic group and the vector space on which it acts.
We study the algebraic boundary of a convex semi-algebraic set via duality in convex and algebraic geometry. We generalize the correspondence of facets of a polytope to the vertices of the dual polytope to general semi-algebraic convex bodies. In the general setup, exceptional families of extreme points might exist and we characterize them semi-algebraically. We also give an algorithm to compute a complete list of exceptional families, given the algebraic boundary of the dual convex set.
This paper reveals some new analytical and geometrical properties of the generalized algebraic multiplicity, $χ$, introduced in [7, 5] and further developed in [20, 23, 24]. In particular, it establishes a completely new connection between $χ$ and the concept of local intersection index of algebraic varieties, a central device in Algebraic Geometry. This link between Nonlinear Spectral Theory and Algebraic Geometry provides to $χ$ with a deep geometrical meaning. Moreover, $χ$ is characterized through the new notion of local determinant of the Schur operator associated to the linear path, $\ma…
In this paper I present a kind of proof for classical Euclidean geometric problems which relies on both synthetic and analytic geometry. Using the elementary tools of polynomial algebra and multivariate calculus we manage to reduce the proof of some general theorems to a finite number of particular cases.
For a given curve X and divisor class C, we give lower bounds on the degree of a divisor A such that A and A-C belong to specified semigroups of divisors. For suitable choices of the semigroups we obtain (1) lower bounds for the size of a party A that can recover the secret in an algebraic geometric linear secret sharing scheme with adversary threshold C, and (2) lower bounds for the support A of a codeword in a geometric Goppa code with designed minimum support C. Our bounds include and improve both the order bound and the floor bound. The bounds are illustrated for two-point codes on general…
The aim of this work is to provide a construction of generalized local symbols on algebraic curves as morphisms of group schemes. From a closed point of a complete, irreducible and non-singular curve $C$ over a perfect field $k$ as the only data, using theta groups over Picard schemes of curves, we offer a geometric construction that allows us to define generalizations of the tame symbol and the Hilbert norm residue symbol.
We complete the classification of order $5$ nonsymplectic automorphisms on hyper-Kähler fourfolds deformation equivalent to the Hilbert square of a K3 surface. We then compute the topological Lefschetz number of natural automorphisms of generalized Kummer fourfolds and we describe the geometry of their fix loci.
The main objective of this paper is to show that the notion of type which was developed within the frames of logic and model theory has deep ties with geometric properties of algebras. These ties go back and forth from universal algebraic geometry to the model theory through the machinery of algebraic logic. We show that types appear naturally as logical kernels in the Galois correspondence between filters in the Halmos algebra of first order formulas with equalities and elementary sets in the corresponding affine space.
We prove that the set of non-degenerate second order maximally superintegrable systems in the complex Euclidean plane carries a natural structure of a projective variety, equipped with a linear isometry group action. This is done by deriving the corresponding system of homogeneous algebraic equations. We then solve these equations explicitly and give a detailed analysis of the algebraic geometric structure of the corresponding projective variety. This naturally associates a unique planar line triple arrangement to every superintegrable system, providing a geometric realisation of this variety …
In this paper we give a geometric version of the Satake isomorphism. Given a connected complex reductive algebraic group, we show that the category of representations of its Langlands dual is naturally equivalent to a certain category of perverse sheaves on the complex affine Grassmannian. We can work with perverse sheaves with coefficients in an arbitrary commutative ring and then we recover the representation theory of the split form of the dual group over the commutative ring.
We define the class of admissible linear embeddings of flag varieties. The definition is given in the general language of algebraic geometry. We then prove that an admissible linear embedding of flag varieties has a certain explicit form in terms of linear algebra. This result enables us to show that any direct limit of admissible embeddings of flag varieties is isomorphic to an ind-variety of generalized flags as defined in [DP]. These latter ind-varieties have been introduced in terms of the ind-group SL(\infty) (respectively, O(\infty) or Sp(\infty) for isotropic generalized flags), and the…
We study a tropical analogue of the projective dual variety of a hypersurface. When $X$ is a curve in $\mathbb{P}^2$ or a surface in $\mathbb{P}^3$, we provide an explicit description of $\text{Trop}(X^*)$ in terms of $\text{Trop}(X)$, as long as $\text{Trop}(X)$ is smooth and satisfies a mild genericity condition. As a consequence, when $X$ is a curve we describe the transformation of Newton polygons under projective duality, and recover classical formulas for the degree of a dual plane curve. For higher dimensional hypersurfaces $X$, we give a partial description of $\text{Trop}(X^*)$.
The Ehrhart quasi-polynomial of a rational polytope $P$ is a fundamental invariant counting lattice points in integer dilates of $P$. The quasi-period of this quasi-polynomial divides the denominator of $P$ but is not always equal to it: this situation is called quasi-period collapse. Polytopes experiencing quasi-period collapse appear widely across algebra and geometry, and yet the phenomenon remains largely mysterious. Using techniques from algebraic geometry - specifically the $\mathbb{Q}$-Gorenstein deformation theory of orbifold del Pezzo surfaces - we explain quasi-period collapse for ra…
We propose a generalization of Artin's definition of algebraic stack, which we call {\em geometric $n$-stack}. The main observation is that there is an inductive structure to the definition whereby the ingredients for the definition of geometric $n$-stack involve only $n-1$-stacks and so are already previously defined. We use this inductive structure to obtain some basic properties. We look at maps from a projective variety into certain such $n$-stacks, and obtain an interpretation of the Brill-Noether locus as the set of points of a geometric $n$-stack. At the end we explain how this provides…
In this paper, we establish the following version at infinity of Whitney's theorem [6, 7]: Geometric and algebraic tangent cones at infinity of complex algebraic varieties coincide. The proof of this fact is based on a geometric characterization of geometric tangent cones at infinity and using the global Łojasiewicz inequality with explicit exponents for complex algebraic varieties. We also show that tangent cones at infinity of complex algebraic varieties can be computed using Gröbner bases.
We give an effective criterion for openness of a morphism of schemes of finite type over a field: Over a normal base of dimension n, failure of openness is detected by a vertical component in the n'th fibred power of the morphism. This is a topological analogue of a criterion for flatness that originates with Auslander.
We provide a geometric approach to constructing Lefschetz collections and Landau-Ginzburg Homological Projective Duals from a variation of Geometric Invariant Theory quotients. This approach yields homological projective duals for Veronese embeddings in the setting of Landau Ginzburg models. Our results also extend to a relative Homological Projective Duality framework.
We introduce a notion of Homological Projective Duality for smooth algebraic varieties in dual projective spaces, a homological extension of the classical projective duality. If algebraic varieties $X$ and $Y$ in dual projective spaces are Homologically Projectively Dual, then we prove that the orthogonal linear sections of $X$ and $Y$ admit semiorthogonal decompositions with an equivalent nontrivial component. In particular, it follows that triangulated categories of singularities of these sections are equivalent. We also investigate Homological Projective Duality for projectivizations of vec…
To characterize entanglement of tripartite $\mathbb{C}^d\otimes\mathbb{C}^d\otimes\mathbb{C}^d$ systems, we employ algebraic-geometric tools that are invariants under Stochastic Local Operation and Classical Communication (SLOCC), namely $k$-secant varieties and one-multilinear ranks. Indeed, by means of them, we present a classification of tripartite pure states in terms of a finite number of families and subfamilies. At the core of it stands out a fine-structure grouping of three-qutrit entanglement.
We develop techniques for describing the derived moduli spaces of solutions to the equations of motion in twists of supersymmetric gauge theories as derived algebraic stacks. We introduce a holomorphic twist of N=4 supersymmetric gauge theory and compute the derived moduli space. We then compute the moduli spaces for the Kapustin-Witten topological twists as its further twists. The resulting spaces for the A- and B-twist are closely related to the de Rham stack of the moduli space of algebraic bundles and the de Rham moduli space of flat bundles, respectively. In particular, we find the unexpe…
Macaulay dual spaces provide a local description of an affine scheme and give rise to computational machinery that is compatible with the methods of numerical algebraic geometry. We introduce eliminating dual spaces, use them for computing dual spaces of quotient ideals, and develop an algorithm for detection of embedded points on an algebraic curve.
This paper is a short version of the author habilitation thesis. The main results have been already published but here a lot of details are clarified. As well we add some new results: we discuss some quasi classical limit of ALG(a) - quantization, mention some topological properties of the moduli space of Bohr - Sommerfeld Lagrangian cycles of fixed type and investigate some properties of the Kaehler structure on it.
