For a linear code $\cC$ of length $n$ and dimension $k$, Wolf noticed that the trellis state complexity $s(\cC)$ of $\cC$ is upper bounded by $w(\cC):=\min(k,n-k)$. In this paper we point out some new lower bounds for $s(\cC)$. In particular, if $\cC$ is an Algebraic Geometric code, then $s(\cC)\geq w(\cC)-(g-a)$, where $g$ is the genus of the underlying curve and $a$ is the abundance of the code.
We study a connection between two topics: Decoding of Goppa codes arising from an algebraic curve, and rank two extensions of certain line bundles on the curve.
The central objective of this dissertation was to present the Goppa Geometry Codes via elementary methods which were introduced by J.H. van Lint ,R.Pellikaan and T. Hohold about 1998. On the first part of such dissertation are presented the fundamental concepts about bodies of rational functions of an algebraic curve in the direction as to define the Goppa Codes on a classical manner. In this study we based ourselves mainly on the book ? Algebraic Function Fields and Codes? of H. Stichtenoth. The second part is initiated with an introduction about the functions weight, degree and order which a…
We define Convolutional Goppa Codes over algebraic curves and construct their corresponding dual codes. Examples over the projective line and over elliptic curves are described, obtaining in particular some Maximum-Distance Separable (MDS) convolutional codes.
Let C be an algebraic geometric code of dimension k and length n constructed on a curve X over $F_q$. Let s(C) be the state complexity of C and set w(C):=min{k,n-k}, the Wolf upper bound on s(C). We introduce a numerical function R that depends on the gonality sequence of X and show that s(C)\geq w(C)-R(2g-2), where g is the genus of X. As a matter of fact, R(2g-2)\leq g-(γ_2-2) with γ_2 being the gonality over F_q of X, and thus in particular we have that s(C)\geq w(C)-g+γ_2-2.
Given an Edwards curve, we determine a basis for the Riemann-Roch space of any divisor whose support does not contain any of the two singular points. This basis allows us to compute a generating matrix for an algebraic-geometric Goppa code over the Edwards curve.
In this article, the minimum distance of the dual $C^{\bot}$ of a functional code $C$ on an arbitrary dimensional variety $X$ over a finite field $\F_q$ is studied. The approach consists in finding minimal configurations of points on $X$ which are not in "general position". If $X$ is a curve, the result improves in some situations the well-known Goppa designed distance.
In this paper we compute the order (or Feng-Rao) bound on the minimum distance of one-point algebraic geometry codes, when the Weierstrass semigroup at the point Q is an Arf semigroup. The results developed to that purpose also provide the dimension of the improved geometric Goppa codes related to those.
In this article, we present a new construction of codes from algebraic curves. Given a curve over a non-prime finite field, the obtained codes are defined over a subfield. We call them Cartier Codes since their construction involves the Cartier operator. This new class of codes can be regarded as a natural geometric generalisation of classical Goppa codes. In particular, we prove that a well-known property satisfied by classical Goppa codes extends naturally to Cartier codes. We prove general lower bounds for the dimension and the minimum distance of these codes and compare our construction wi…
Various methods have been used to obtain improvements of the Goppa lower bound for the minimum distance of an algebraic geometric code. The main methods divide into two categories and all but a few of the known bounds are special cases of either the Lundell-McCullough floor bound or the Beelen order bound. The exceptions are recent improvements of the floor bound by Guneri-Stichtenoth-Taskin, and Duursma-Park, and of the order bound by Duursma-Park and Duursma-Kirov. In this paper we provide short proofs for all floor bounds and most order bounds in the setting of the van Lint and Wilson AB me…
Expository paper discussing AG or Goppa codes arising from curves, first from an abstract general perspective then turning to concrete examples associated to modular curves. We will try to explain these extremely technical ideas using a special case at a level to a typical graduate student with some background in modular forms, number theory, group theory, and algebraic geometry. Many examples using MAGMA are included.
The order domains are a class of commutative rings introduced by Høholdt, van Lint, and Pellikaan to simplify the theory of error control codes using ideas from algebraic geometry. The definition is largely motivated by the structures utilized in the Berlekamp-Massey-Sakata (BMS) decoding algorithm, with Feng-Rao majority voting for unknown syndromes, applied to one-point geometric Goppa codes constructed from curves. However, order domains are much more general, and O'Sullivan has shown that the BMS algorithm can be applied to decode all codes constructed from order domains by a suitable gene…
Extending work of M. Zarzar, we evaluate the potential of Goppa-type evaluation codes constructed from linear systems on projective algebraic surfaces with small Picard number. Putting this condition on the Picard number provides some control over the numbers of irreducible components of curves on the surface and hence over the minimum distance of the codes. We find that such surfaces do not automatically produce good codes; the sectional genus of the surface also has a major influence. Using that additional invariant, we derive bounds on the minimum distance under the assumption that the hype…
We introduce a new construction of error-correcting codes from algebraic curves over finite fields. Modular curves of genus g -> infty over a field of size q0^2 yield nonlinear codes more efficient than the linear Goppa codes obtained from the same curves. These new codes now have the highest asymptotic transmission rates known for certain ranges of alphabet size and error rate. Both the theory and possible practical use of these new record codes require the development of new tools. On the theoretical side, establishing the transmission rate depends on an error estimate for a theorem of Schan…
For a given curve X and divisor class C, we give lower bounds on the degree of a divisor A such that A and A-C belong to specified semigroups of divisors. For suitable choices of the semigroups we obtain (1) lower bounds for the size of a party A that can recover the secret in an algebraic geometric linear secret sharing scheme with adversary threshold C, and (2) lower bounds for the support A of a codeword in a geometric Goppa code with designed minimum support C. Our bounds include and improve both the order bound and the floor bound. The bounds are illustrated for two-point codes on general…
In this note, we give a construction of codes on algebraic function field $F/ \mathbb{F}_{q}$ using places of $F$ (not necessarily of degree one) and trace functions from various extensions of $\mathbb{F}_{q}$. This is a generalization of trace code of geometric Goppa codes to higher degree places. We compute a bound on the dimension of this code. Furthermore, we give a condition under which we get exact dimension of the code. We also determine a bound on the minimum distance of this code in terms of $B_{r}(F)$ ( the number of places of degree $r$ in $F$), $1 \leq r < \infty$. Few quasi-cyclic…
Error correcting codes are defined and important parameters for a code are explained. Parameters of new codes constructed on algebraic surfaces are studied. In particular, codes resulting from blowing up points in $\proj^2$ are briefly studied, then codes resulting from ruled surfaces are covered. Codes resulting from ruled surfaces over curves of genus 0 are completely analyzed, and some codes are discovered that are better than direct product Reed Solomon codes of similar length. Ruled surfaces over genus 1 curves are also studied, but not all classes are completely analyzed. However, in thi…
The theory of algebraic-geometric codes has been developed in the beginning of the 80's after a paper of V.D. Goppa. Given a smooth projective algebraic curve X over a finite field, there are two different constructions of error-correcting codes. The first one, called "functional", uses some rational functions on X and the second one, called "differential", involves some rational 1-forms on this curve. Hundreds of papers are devoted to the study of such codes. In addition, a generalization of the functional construction for algebraic varieties of arbitrary dimension is given by Y. Manin in an …
From a rational convex polytope of dimension $r\ge 2$ J.P. Hansen constructed an error correcting code of length $n=(q-1)^r$ over the finite field $\fq$. A rational convex polytope is the same datum as a normal toric variety and a Cartier divisor. The code is obtained evaluating rational functions of the toric variety defined by the polytope at the algebraic torus, and it is an evaluation code in the sense of Goppa. We compute the dimension of the code using cohomology. The minimum distance is estimated using intersection theory and mixed volumes, extending the methods of J.P. Hansen for plane…
