In this article, the minimum distance of the dual $C^{\bot}$ of a functional code $C$ on an arbitrary dimensional variety $X$ over a finite field $\F_q$ is studied. The approach consists in finding minimal configurations of points on $X$ which are not in "general position". If $X$ is a curve, the result improves in some situations the well-known Goppa designed distance.

We investigate the geometry of the support of small weight codewords of dual algebraic geometric codes on smooth complete intersections by applying the powerful tools recently developed by Alain Couvreur. In particular, by restricting ourselves to the case of Hermitian codes, we recover and extend previous results obtained by the second named author joint with Marco Pellegrini and Massimiliano Sala.
In this paper we study the dual codes of a wide family of evaluation codes on norm-trace curves. We explicitly find out their minimum distance and give a lower bound for the number of their minimum-weight codewords. A general geometric approach is performed and applied to study in particular the dual codes of one-point and two-point codes arising from norm-trace curves through Goppa's construction, providing in many cases their minimum distance and some bounds on the number of their minimum-weight codewords. The results are obtained by showing that the supports of the minimum-weight codewords …
In this paper we investigate some dual algebraic-geometric codes associated with the Giulietti-Korchmáros maximal curve. We compute the minimum distance and the minimum weight codewords of such codes and we investigate the generalized hamming weights of such codes.
Motivated by notions from coding theory, we study the generalized minimum distance (GMD) function $δ_I(d,r)$ of a graded ideal $I$ in a polynomial ring over an arbitrary field using commutative algebraic methods. It is shown that $δ_I$ is non-decreasing as a function of $r$ and non-increasing as a function of $d$. For vanishing ideals over finite fields, we show that $δ_I$ is strictly decreasing as a function of $d$ until it stabilizes. We also study algebraic invariants of Geramita ideals. Those ideals are graded, unmixed, $1$-dimensional and their associated primes are generated by linear fo…
We prove lower bounds for the minimum distance of algebraic geometry codes over surfaces whose canonical divisor is either nef or anti-strictly nef and over surfaces without irreducible curves of small genus. We sharpen these lower bounds for surfaces whose arithmetic Picard number equals one, surfaces without curves with small self-intersection and fibered surfaces. Finally we specify our bounds to the case of surfaces of degree $d\geq 3$ embedded in $\mathbb{P)^3$.
In this paper we study evaluation codes arising from plane quotients of the Hermitian curve, defined by affine equations of the form $y^q+y=x^m$, $q$ being a prime power and $m$ a positive integer which divides $q+1$. The dual minimum distance and minimum weight of such codes are studied from a geometric point of view. In many cases we completely describe the minimum-weight codewords of their dual codes through a geometric characterization of the supports, and provide their number. Finally, we apply our results to describe Goppa codes of classical interest on such curves.
The purpose of the present article is the study of duals of functional codes on algebraic surfaces. We give a direct geometrical description of them, using differentials. Even if this geometrical description is less trivial, it can be regarded as a natural extension to surfaces of the result asserting that the dual of a functional code on a curve is a differential code. We study the parameters of such codes and state a lower bound for their minimum distance. Using this bound, one can study some examples of codes on surfaces, and in particular surfaces with Picard number 1 like elliptic quadric…
A flag of codes $C_0 \subsetneq C_1 \subsetneq \cdots \subsetneq C_s \subseteq {\mathbb F}_q^n$ is said to satisfy the {\it isometry-dual property} if there exists ${\bf x}\in (\mathbb{F}_q^*)^n$ such that the code $C_i$ is {\bf x}-isometric to the dual code $C_{s-i}^\perp$ for all $i=0,\ldots, s$. For $P$ and $Q$ rational places in a function field ${\mathcal F}$, we investigate the existence of isometry-dual flags of codes in the families of two-point algebraic geometry codes $$C_\mathcal L(D, a_0P+bQ)\subsetneq C_\mathcal L(D, a_1P+bQ)\subsetneq \dots \subsetneq C_\mathcal L(D, a_sP+bQ),$$ …
We discover a class of projective self-dual algebraic varieties. Namely, we consider actions of isotropy groups of complex symmetric spaces on the projectivized nilpotent varieties of isotropy modules. For them, we classify all orbit closures $X$ such that $X=\check X$ where $\check X$ is the projective dual of $X$. We give algebraic criteria of projective self-duality for the considered orbit closures.
There are many results on the minimum distance of a cyclic code of the form that if a certain set T is a subset of the defining set of the code, then the minimum distance of the code is greater than some integer t. This includes the BCH, Hartmann-Tzeng, Roos, and shift bounds and generalizations of these. In this paper we define certain projective varieties V(T,t) whose properties determine whether, if T is in the defining set, the code has minimum distance exceeding t. Thus our attention shifts to the study of these varieties. By investigating them using class field theory and arithmetical ge…
We study the algebraic boundary of a convex semi-algebraic set via duality in convex and algebraic geometry. We generalize the correspondence of facets of a polytope to the vertices of the dual polytope to general semi-algebraic convex bodies. In the general setup, exceptional families of extreme points might exist and we characterize them semi-algebraically. We also give an algorithm to compute a complete list of exceptional families, given the algebraic boundary of the dual convex set.
In this paper we give a geometric version of the Satake isomorphism. Given a connected complex reductive algebraic group, we show that the category of representations of its Langlands dual is naturally equivalent to a certain category of perverse sheaves on the complex affine Grassmannian. We can work with perverse sheaves with coefficients in an arbitrary commutative ring and then we recover the representation theory of the split form of the dual group over the commutative ring.
We introduce and study the minimum distance function of a graded ideal in a polynomial ring with coefficients in a field, and show that it generalizes the minimum distance of projective Reed-Muller-type codes over finite fields. This gives an algebraic formulation of the minimum distance of a projective Reed-Muller-type code in terms of the algebraic invariants and structure of the underlying vanishing ideal. Then we give a method, based on Groebner bases and Hilbert functions, to find lower bounds for the minimum distance of certain Reed-Muller-type codes. Finally we show explicit upper bound…
We study a tropical analogue of the projective dual variety of a hypersurface. When $X$ is a curve in $\mathbb{P}^2$ or a surface in $\mathbb{P}^3$, we provide an explicit description of $\text{Trop}(X^*)$ in terms of $\text{Trop}(X)$, as long as $\text{Trop}(X)$ is smooth and satisfies a mild genericity condition. As a consequence, when $X$ is a curve we describe the transformation of Newton polygons under projective duality, and recover classical formulas for the degree of a dual plane curve. For higher dimensional hypersurfaces $X$, we give a partial description of $\text{Trop}(X^*)$.
The Ehrhart quasi-polynomial of a rational polytope $P$ is a fundamental invariant counting lattice points in integer dilates of $P$. The quasi-period of this quasi-polynomial divides the denominator of $P$ but is not always equal to it: this situation is called quasi-period collapse. Polytopes experiencing quasi-period collapse appear widely across algebra and geometry, and yet the phenomenon remains largely mysterious. Using techniques from algebraic geometry - specifically the $\mathbb{Q}$-Gorenstein deformation theory of orbifold del Pezzo surfaces - we explain quasi-period collapse for ra…
We introduce a notion of Homological Projective Duality for smooth algebraic varieties in dual projective spaces, a homological extension of the classical projective duality. If algebraic varieties $X$ and $Y$ in dual projective spaces are Homologically Projectively Dual, then we prove that the orthogonal linear sections of $X$ and $Y$ admit semiorthogonal decompositions with an equivalent nontrivial component. In particular, it follows that triangulated categories of singularities of these sections are equivalent. We also investigate Homological Projective Duality for projectivizations of vec…
Macaulay dual spaces provide a local description of an affine scheme and give rise to computational machinery that is compatible with the methods of numerical algebraic geometry. We introduce eliminating dual spaces, use them for computing dual spaces of quotient ideals, and develop an algorithm for detection of embedded points on an algebraic curve.
In this paper we study the algebraic geometry of any two-point code on the Hermitian curve and reveal the purely geometric nature of their dual minimum distance. We describe the minimum-weight codewords of many of their dual codes through an explicit geometric characterization of their supports. In particular, we show that they appear as sets of collinear points in many cases.
We consider categories of rational maps to algebraic groups and study existence and construction of universal objects for such categories, using the duality theory of Laumon 1-motives. In particular, we obtain functorial descriptions of the Albanese of a singular projective variety X over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero, which is the universal regular quotient of a relative Chow group of points on X, and of its dual.
We show that, under appropriate hypothesis, the groupoid of maps from S to an an algebraic stack X can be identified with a category of tensor functors from coherent sheaves on X to coherent sheaves on S. As an application, we show that if S is a proper variety over the field of complex numbers, then every ``analytic'' map from S to X is ``algebraic''.
We consider a compact Kaehler manifold whose dual Kaehler cone contains a rational interior point. The general problem we have in mind is how far the manifold is from being projective; i.e. we ask for the algebraic dimension. We prove e.g. that if the interior point is represented by an effective curve in dimension 3, then the manifold has algebraic dimension at least 2 unless the variety is a so-called simple non-Kummer 3-fold. We also investigate 3-folds containing curves with ample normal bundle. It seems likely that examples with algebraic dimension 2 really exist.
Let $G$ be a group. Let $X$ be an algebraic group over an algebraically closed field $K$. Denote by $A=X(K)$ the set of rational points of $X$. We study algebraic group cellular automata $τ\colon A^G \to A^G$ whose local defining map is induced by a homomorphism of algebraic groups $X^M \to X$ where $M$ is a finite memory. When $G$ is sofic and $K$ is uncountable, we show that if $τ$ is post-surjective then it is weakly pre-injective. Our result extends the dual version of Gottschalk's Conjecture for finite alphabets proposed by Capobianco, Kari, and Taati. When $G$ is amenable, we prove that …
Tropical algebra is an emerging field with a number of applications in various areas of mathematics. In many of these applications appeal to tropical polynomials allows to study properties of mathematical objects such as algebraic varieties and algebraic curves from the computational point of view. This makes it important to study both mathematical and computational aspects of tropical polynomials. In this paper we prove a tropical Nullstellensatz and moreover we show an effective formulation of this theorem. Nullstellensatz is a natural step in building algebraic theory of tropical polynomial…
