We study black holes in the Hořava-Lifshitz gravity with a parameter $λ$. For $1/3 \le λ< 3$, the black holes behave the Lifshitz black holes with dynamical exponent $0 < z \le 4$, while for $λ> 3$, the black holes behave the Reissner-Nordström type black hole in asymptotically flat spacetimes. Hence, these all are quite different from the Schwarzschild-AdS black hole of Einstein gravity. The temperature, mass, entropy, and heat capacity are derived for investigating thermodynamic properties of these black holes.
We find the connection between thermodynamic quantities and quasinormal frequencies in Lifshitz black holes. It is shown that the globally stable Lifshitz black holes have pure imaginary quasinormal frequencies. We also show that by employing the Maggiore's method, both the horizon area and the entropy can be quantized for these black holes.
We study the first law of thermodynamics in IR modified Hǒrava-Lifshitz spacetime. Based on the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy, we obtain the integral formula and the differential formula of the first law of thermodynamics for the Kehagias-Sfetsos black hole by treating $ω$ as a new state parameter and redefining a mass that is just equal to $M_{ADM}$ obtained by Myung\cite{YSM2} if we take $α=3π/8$.
In this paper we investigate the thermodynamic properties of the stationary Lifshitz black hole solution of New Massive Gravity. We study the thermodynamic stability from local and global point of view. We also consider the space of equilibrium states for the solution within the framework of Thermodynamic Information Geometry. By investigating the proper thermodynamic metrics and their curvature invariants we find a set of restrictions on the parameter space and the critical points indicating phase transitions of the system. We confirm our findings by analytical analysis of the geodesics on th…
We examine the concept of black hole thermodynamic volume and its consistency with thermodynamic mass in spacetimes that are not asymptotically flat but instead have anisotropic Lifshitz scaling symmetry. We find that the generalized Smarr relation in anti de Sitter space -- extended to include a pressure-volume term -- holds here as well, and that there exists a definition of thermodynamic mass and thermodynamic volume that satisfy both this relation and the $1^{st}$ law of thermodynamics. We compare the thermodynamic mass with other known quantities such as ADM, Brown-York and Hollands-Ishib…
We investigate the thermodynamics of rotating Lovelock-Lifshitz black branes. We calculate the conserved and thermodynamic quantities of the solutions and obtain a relation between temperature, angular velocity, energy density, entropy density and angular momentum density. We, also, obtain a Smarr-type formula for the energy density as a function of entropy and angular momentum densities, and show that the thermodynamic quantities calculated in this paper satisfy the first law of thermodynamics. Finally, we investigate the stability of black brane solutions in both canonical and grand-canonica…
We investigate the thermodynamics of Lovelock-Lifshitz black branes. We begin by introducing the finite action of third order Lovelock gravity in the presence of a massive vector field for a flat boundary, and use it to compute the energy density of these black branes. Using the field equations, we find a conserved quantity along the $r$ coordinate that relates the metric parameters at the horizon and at infinity. Remarkably, though the subleading large-$r$ behavior of Lovelock-Lifshitz black branes differs substantively from their Einsteinian Lifshitz counterparts, we find that the relationsh…
For charged black holes in Horava-Lifshitz gravity, a second order phase transition takes place in extended phase space where the cosmological constant is taken as thermodynamic pressure. We relate the second order nature of phase transition to the fact that the phase transition occurs at a sharp temperature and not over a temperature interval. Once we know the continuity of the first derivatives of the Gibbs free energy, we show that all the Ehrenfest equations are readily satisfied. We study the effect of the perturbation of the cosmological constant as well as the perturbation of the electr…
In this paper, we investigate the thermodynamics of Lifshitz black branes in the presence of a nonlinear massless electromagnetic field. We begin by introducing the appropriate action in grand-canonical and canonical ensembles for nonlinear electromagnetic field. The condition on the parameters of the metric for having black brane solutions will be presented. Since the field equations cannot be solved for an arbitrary value of the critical exponent $z$, we obtain a conserved quantity along the $r$ coordinate that enables us to relate the parameters of the metric at the horizon and at infinity.…
Thermodynamics of $z=4$ Hořava-Lifshitz black holes in 3+1 dimensions is studied in extended phase space. By using the scaling argument we find the Smarr relation and the first law for the black hole solutions of $z=4$ Hořava-Lifshitz gravity. We find that it is necessary to take into account the variation of dimensionful parameters of the theory in the first law. We find that the reverse isoperimetric inequality can be violated for spherical, flat, and hyperbolic horizons and in all such cases we have black holes for which the specific heat at constant pressure and volume are positive. This p…
It is well known that by applying the first law of thermodynamics to the apparent horizon of a Friedmann-Robertson-Walker universe, one can derive the corresponding Friedmann equations in Einstein, Gauss-Bonnet, and more general Lovelock gravity. Is this a generic feature of any gravitational theory? Is the prescription applicable to other gravities? In this paper we would like to address the above questions by examining the same procedure for Horava-Lifshitz gravity. We find that in Horava-Lifshitz gravity, this approach does not work and we fail to reproduce a corresponding Friedmann equatio…
We investigate the thermodynamic geometry and phase transition of Kehagias-Sfetsos black hole in the deformed Horava-Lifshitz gravity with coupling constant $λ=1$. The phase transition in black hole thermodynamics is thought to be associated with the divergence of the capacities. And the structures of these divergent points are studied. We also find that the thermodynamic curvature produced by the Ruppeiner metric is positive definite for all $r_+ > r_-$ and is divergence at $η_2=0$ corresponded to the divergent points of $C_Φ$ and $C_T$. These results suggest that the microstructure of the bl…
We consider scalar and spinorial perturbations on a background described by a $z=3$ three-dimensional Lifshitz black hole. We obtained the corresponding quasinormal modes which perfectly agree with the analytical result for the quasinormal frequency in the scalar case. The numerical results for the spinorial perturbations reinforce our conclusion on the stability of the model under these perturbations. We also calculate the area spectrum, which prove to be equally spaced, as an application of our results.
By using the canonical Hamiltonian method, we obtain the mass and entropy of the black holes with general dynamical coupling constant $λ$ in Hoř ava-Lifshitz Gravity. Regardless of whether the horizon is sphere, plane or hyperboloid, we find these black holes are thermodynamically stable in some parameter space and unstable phase also exists in other parameter space. The relation between the entropy and horizon area of the black holes has an additional coefficient depending on the coupling constant $λ$, compared to the $λ=1$ case. For $λ=1$, the well-known coefficient of one quarter is recover…
In three dimensions, we consider the Einstein-Maxwell Lagrangian dressed by a nonminimally coupled scalar field in New Massive Gravity. For this theory, we provide two families of electrically charged Lifshitz black holes where their metric functions depend only on an integration constant. We calculate their masses using the quasilocal approach, as well as their entropy and electric charge. These charged configurations are interpreted as extremal in the sense that the mass vanishes identically while the entropy and electric charge are non zero thermodynamic quantities. Using these examples, we…
We apply the recently extended conserved Killing charge definition of Abbott-Deser-Tekin formalism to compute, for the first time, the energies of analytic Lifshitz black holes in higher dimensions. We then calculate the temperature and the entropy of this large family of solutions, and study and discuss the first law of black hole thermodynamics. Along the way we also identify the possible critical points of the relevant quadratic curvature gravity theories. Separately, we also apply the generalized Killing charge definition to compute the energy and the angular momentum of the warped AdS_3 b…
In this paper, we investigate the thermodynamics of hyperscaling violating Lifshitz black branes in the presence of a nonlinear massless electromagnetic field. We, first, obtain analytic nonlinear charged black brane solutions with hyperscaling violating factor in dilaton gravity and give the condition on the parameters of the metric for having black brane solutions. Second, we introduce the appropriate finite action in grand-canonical and canonical ensembles for nonlinear electromagnetic field. Next, by generalizing the counterterm method for the asymptotic Lifshitz spacetimes with hyperscali…
We study thermodynamics of black holes in the deformed Hořava-Lifshitz gravity with coupling constant $λ$. For $λ=1$, the black hole behaves the Reissner-Norström black hole. Hence, this is different from the Schwarzschild black hole of Einstein gravity. A connection to the generalized uncertainty principle is explored to understand the Hořava-Lifshitz black holes.
We explore the relationship between the first law of thermodynamics and gravitational field equation at a static, spherically symmetric black hole horizon in Hořava-Lifshtiz theory with/without detailed balance. It turns out that as in the cases of Einstein gravity and Lovelock gravity, the gravitational field equation can be cast to a form of the first law of thermodynamics at the black hole horizon. This way we obtain the expressions for entropy and mass in terms of black hole horizon, consistent with those from other approaches. We also define a generalized Misner-Sharp energy for static, s…

We examine the thermodynamic properties of inner and outer horizons in the background of Hořava Lifshitz black hole. We compute the \emph{horizon radii product, the surface area product, the entropy product, the surface temperature product, the Komar energy product and the specific heat product} for both the horizons of said black hole. We show that surface area product, entropy product and irreducible mass product are \emph{universal} quantities, whereas the surface temperature product, Komar energy product and specific heat product are \emph{not universal} quantities because they all are dep…
We specialize the Wald formalism to derive the thermodynamical first law for static black holes with spherical/torus/hyperbolic symmetries in a variety of supergravities or supergravity-inspired theories involving multiple scalars and vectors. We apply the formula to study the first law of a general class of Lifshitz black holes. We analyse the first law of three exact Lifshitz black holes and the results fit the general pattern. In one example, the first law is $TdS + ΦdQ=0$ where $(Φ,Q)$ are the electric potential and charge of the Maxwell field. The unusual vanishing of mass in this specifi…
Black holes with asymptotic anisotropic scaling are conjectured to be gravity duals of condensed matter system close to quantum critical points with non-trivial dynamical exponent z at finite temperature. A holographic renormalization procedure is presented that allows thermodynamic potentials to be defined for objects with both electric and magnetic charge in such a way that standard thermodynamic relations hold. Black holes in asymptotic Lifshitz spacetimes can exhibit paramagnetic behavior at low temperature limit for certain values of the critical exponent z, whereas the behavior of AdS bl…
The generalized effective potential for motion in Lifshitz geometry (with arbitrary value of both the dynamical exponent $z$ and $f(r)$) is presented. Based on this effective potential energy, we shall show that bounded orbits are forbidden for positive values of $z$ and allowed for negative values of $z$. The stability of these bounded orbits are analysed in full detail. Besides, by comparison, we quote a theorem which should be very helpful in searching thermodynamical properties of these gravitational black holes. Based on this theorem, generalized thermodynamic properties of Lifshitz black…
We obtain the mass expression of the three- and five-dimensional Lifshitz black holes by em- ploying the recently proposed quasilocal formulation of conserved charges, which is based on the off-shell extension of the ADT formalism. Our result is consistent with the first law of black hole thermodynamics and resolves the reported discrepancy between the ADT formalism and the other conventional methods. The same mass expression of Lifshitz black holes is obtained by using an- other quasilocal method by Padmanabhan. We also discuss the reported discrepancy in the context of the extended first law…
Regarding a special class of pure F(R) gravity in three dimensions, we obtain, analytically, Lifshitz-like black hole solutions. We check the geometrical properties of the solutions which behave such as charged BTZ black holes in special limit. We also investigate the thermodynamic properties of the solutions and examine the first law of thermodynamics and Smarr formula. In addition, we study thermal stability via the heat capacity and discuss the possibility of criticality in the extended phase space.
Horava gravity theory possesses global Lifshitz space as a solution and has been conjectured to provide a natural framework for Lifshitz holography. We derive the conditions on the two derivative Horava gravity Lagrangian that are necessary for static, asymptotically Lifshitz spacetimes with flat transverse dimensions to contain a universal horizon, which plays a similar thermodynamic role as the Killing horizon in general relativity. Specializing to z=2 in 1+2 dimensions, we then numerically construct such regular solutions over the whole spacetime. We calculate the mass for these solutions a…
Gravity can be thought as an emergent phenomenon and it has a nice "thermodynamic" structure. In this context, it is then possible to study the thermodynamics without knowing the details of the underlying microscopic degrees of freedom. Here, based on the ordinary thermodynamics, we investigate the phase transition of the static, spherically symmetric charged black hole solution with arbitrary scalar curvature $2k$ in Hořava-Lifshitz gravity at the Lifshitz point $z=3$. The analysis is done using the canonical ensemble frame work; i.e. the charge is kept fixed. We find (a) for both $k=0$ and $…
We investigate the thermodynamic geometries of the most general static, spherically symmetric, topological black holes of the Hořava--Lifshitz gravity. In particular, we show that a Legendre invariant metric derived in the context of geometrothermodynamics for the equilibrium manifold reproduces correctly the phase transition structure of these black holes. Moreover, the limiting cases in which the mass, the entropy or the Hawking temperature vanish are also accompanied by curvature singularities which indicate the limit of applicability of the thermodynamics and the geometrothermodynamics of …
In this paper we obtain exact asymptotically anti-de Sitter black hole solutions and asymptotically Lifshitz black hole solutions with dynamical exponents $z=0$ and $z=4$ of four-dimensional conformal gravity coupled with a self-interacting conformally invariant scalar field. Then, we compute their thermodynamical quantities, such as the mass, the Wald entropy and the Hawking temperature. The mass expression is obtained by using the generalized off-shell Noether potential formulation. It is found that the anti-de Sitter black holes as well as the Lifshitz black holes with $z=0$ have zero mass …
We investigate the validity of the generalized second law of thermodynamics in a universe governed by Horava-Lifshitz gravity. Under the equilibrium assumption, that is in the late-time cosmological regime, we calculate separately the entropy time-variation for the matter fluid and, using the modified entropy relation, that of the apparent horizon itself. We find that under detailed balance the generalized second law is generally valid for flat and closed geometry and it is conditionally valid for an open universe, while beyond detailed balance it is only conditionally valid for all curvatures…
We investigate the Lifshitz black holes from the Hořava-Lifshitz gravity by comparing with the Lifshitz black hole from the 3D new massive gravity. We note that these solutions all have single horizons. These black holes are very similar to each other when studying their thermodynamics. It is shown that a second order phase transition is unlikely possible to occur between $z=3,2$ Lifshitz black holes and $z=1$ Hořava black hole.
Motivated by recent works [1,2], the influences of self-gravitational interaction on the Hawking radiation are studied both for (3 + 1) and (4 + 1) dimensional black holes in $z = 4$ Hourava-Lifshitz gravity. It is found that the tunneling entropies $S_{B(3 + 1)}$ and $S_{B(4 + 1)}$ independent on particle's mass are consistent with the thermodynamical entropies $S_{BH(3 + 1)}$ and $S_{BH(4 + 1)}$, respectively. There is a very visible degree of uniformity between thermodynamics and quantum tunneling in $z = 4$ Hourava-Lifshitz gravity. It suggests that the entropies contained corrected terms …
Gravitational backgrounds in d+2 dimensions have been proposed as holographic duals to Lifshitz-like theories describing critical phenomena in d+1 dimensions with critical exponent z\geq 1. We numerically explore a dilaton-Einstein-Maxwell model admitting such backgrounds as solutions. Such backgrounds are characterized by a temperature T and chemical potential μ, and we find how to embed these solutions into AdS for a range of values of z and d. We find no thermal instability going from the (T\llμ) to the (T\ggμ) regimes, regardless of the dimension, and find that the solutions smoothly inter…
We find topological (charged) black holes whose horizon has an arbitrary constant scalar curvature $2k$ in Hořava-Lifshitz theory. Without loss of generality, one may take $k=1,0$ and -1. The black hole solution is asymptotically AdS with a nonstandard asymptotic behavior. Using the Hamiltonian approach, we define a finite mass associated with the solution. We discuss the thermodynamics of the topological black holes and find that the black hole entropy has a logarithmic term in addition to an area term. We find a duality in Hawking temperature between topological black holes in Hořava-Lifshit…
On the basis of horizon thermodynamics, we study the thermodynamic stability and $P-V$ criticality of topological black holes constructed in Hořava-Lifshitz (HL) gravity without the detailed-balance condition (with general $ε$). In the framework of horizon thermodynamics, we do not need the concrete black hole solution (the metric function) and the concrete matter fields. It is shown that the HL black hole for $k=0$ is always thermodynamically stable. For $k=1$, the thermodynamic behaviors and $P-V$ criticality of the HL black hole are similar to those of RN-AdS black hole for some $ε$. For $k…
We study black hole phase transitions in (deformed) Hořava-Lifshitz (H-L) gravity, including the charged black hole and KS black hole. Stability of black holes in H-L gravity and the phase transition signals are investigated. The Ricci scalar of the thermodynamical metrics of black holes in H-L gravity are calculated for the purpose of verifying or falsifying the correspondence between curvature singularities of thermodynamical metrics and phase transition signals proposed in [arXiv:1008.4482]. We find a probable counter-example to the correspondence that there is an infinite discontinuity at …

I present the stationary Lifshitz black hole solution of three-dimensional New Massive Gravity theory and study its elementary geometric and thermodynamical properties.
We explore an effective supergravity action in the presence of a massless gauge field which contains the Gauss-Bonnet term as well as a dilaton field. We construct a new class of black brane solutions of this theory with the Lifshitz asymptotic by fixing the parameters of the model such that the asymptotic Lifshitz behavior can be supported. Then we construct the well-defined finite action through the use of the counterterm method. We also obtain two independent constants along the radial coordinate by combining the equations of motion. Calculations of these two constants at infinity through t…
Recently, a class of gravitational backgrounds in 3+1 dimensions have been proposed as holographic duals to a Lifshitz theory describing critical phenomena in 2+1 dimensions with critical exponent $z\geq 1$. We continue our earlier work \cite{Bertoldi:2009vn}, exploring the thermodynamic properties of the "black brane" solutions with horizon topology $\mathbb{R}^2$. We find that the black branes satisfy the relation $\mathcal{E}=\frac{2}{2+z}Ts$ where $\mathcal{E}$ is the energy density, $T$ is the temperature, and $s$ is the entropy density. This matches the expected behavior for a 2+1 dimens…
In this work, we have investigated the validity of GSL of thermodynamics in a universe (open, closed and flat) governed by Ho$\check{\text r}$ava-Lifshitz gravity. If the universe contains barotropic fluid the corresponding solutions have been obtained. The validity of GSL have been examined by two approaches: (i) robust approach and (ii) effective approach. In robust approach, we have considered the universe contains only matter fluid and the effect of the gravitational sector of HL gravity was incorporated through the modified black hole entropy on the horizon. Effective approach is that all…
In this work, we study the existence of asymptotically Lifshitz black holes in Critical Gravity in four dimensions with a negative cosmological constant under two scenarios: First, including dilatonic fields as the matter source, where we find an asymptotically Lifshitz solution for a fixed value of the dynamical exponent $z=4$. As a second case, we also added a non-minimally coupled scalar field $Φ$ with a potential given by a mass term and a quartic term. Using this approach, we found a solution for $z$ defined in the interval $(1,4)$, recovering the Schwarzchild-Anti-de Sitter case with pla…
In this paper, we consider non-perturbative quantum correction which appears as exponential term in the black hole entropy. We study consequence thermodynamics of the Hořava-Lifshitz black hole at quantum scales. We consider two cases of Kehagius-Sfetsos and Lu-Mei-Pop solutions and investigate black hole stability. We find that non-perturbative quantum correction yields to an instability at infinitesimal horizon radius of Kehagius-Sfetsos solution. On the other hand, non-perturbative quantum correction yields to the stability of Lu-Mei-Pop solution. Hence, we find that holographic dual of Lu-…
In arbitrary dimension, we consider the Einstein-Maxwell Lagrangian supplemented by the more general quadratic-curvature corrections. For this model, we derive four classes of charged Lifshitz black hole solutions for which the metric function is shown to depend on a unique integration constant. The masses of these solutions are computed using the quasilocal formalism based on the relation established between the off-shell ADT and Noether potentials. Among these four solutions, three of them are interpreted as extremal in the sense that their mass vanishes identically. For the last family of s…
We study thermodynamics of cosmological models in the Horava-Lifshitz theory of gravity, and systematically investigate the evolution of the universe filled with a perfect fluid that has the equation of state $p=wρ$, where $p$ and $ρ$ denote, respectively, the pressure and energy density of the fluid, and $w$ is an arbitrary real constant. Depending on specific values of the free parameters involved in the models, we classify all of them into various cases. In each case the main properties of the evolution are studied in detail, including the periods of deceleration and/or acceleration, and th…
We investigate slowly rotating black holes in the Hořava-Lifshitz (HL) gravity. For $Λ_W=0$ and $λ=1$, we find a slowly rotating black hole of the Kehagias-Sfetsos solution in asymptotically flat spacetimes. We discuss their thermodynamic properties by computing mass, temperature, angular momentum, and angular velocity on the horizon.
Regarding a particular class of pure $F(R)$ gravity in three dimensions, we obtain an analytical rotating Lifshitz-like black hole solution. We first investigate some geometrical properties of the obtained solution that reduces to a charged rotating BTZ black hole in a special limit. Then, we study the optical features of such a black hole like the photon orbit and the energy emission rate and discuss how electric charge, angular momentum, and exponents affect them. In order to have an acceptable optical behavior, we should apply some constraints on the exponents. We continue our investigation…
A class of (2+1)-dimensional quantum many body system characterized by an anisotropic scaling symmetry (Lifshitz symmetry) near their quantum critical point can be described by a (3+1)-dimensional dual gravity theory with negative cosmological constant along with a massive vector field, where the scaling symmetry is realized by the metric as an isometry. We calculate the entanglement entropy of an excited state of such a system holographically, i.e., from the asymptotic perturbation of the gravity dual using the prescription of Ryu and Takayanagi, when the subsystem is sufficiently small. With…
In this paper we focus on the Halmiton-Jacobi method to determine several thermodynamic quantities such as the temperature, entropy and specific heat of two-dimensional Horava-Lifshitz black holes by using the generalized uncertainty principles (GUP). We also address the product of horizons, mainly concerning the event, Cauchy, cosmological and virtual horizons.
In this paper we study the corrections emergent from a Hořava-Lifshitz extension of the complex scalar sector to the Bose-Einstein condensation and to the thermodynamics parameters. We initially discussed some features of the model to only then compute the corrections to the Bose-Einstein condensation. The calculations were done by computing the generating functional, from which we extract the thermodynamics parameters. We also obtained the Lifshitz scaling correction for the critical temperature $T_c$ that sets the Bose-Einstein Condensation.
We consider Einstein gravities coupled to a cosmological constant and multiple $SU(2)$ Yang-Mills fields in general dimensions and find that the theories admit colored Lifshitz solutions with dynamic exponents $z>1$. We also introduce a Maxwell field and construct exact electric charged black holes that asymptote to the $z=D-1$ colored Lifshitz spacetimes and analyse their thermodynamical first law. Furthermore, we introduce a dilaton to the system and construct Lifshitz spacetimes with hyperscaling violations. After turning on the Maxwell field, we obtain a class of hyperscaling violating Lif…
We present thermodynamics of the quantum su(1,1) Landau-Lifshitz model, following our earlier exposition [J. Math. Phys. 50, 103518 (2009)] of the quantum integrability of the theory, which is based on construction of self-adjoint extensions, leading to a regularized quantum Hamiltonian for an arbitrary n-particle sector. Starting from general discontinuity properties of the functions used to construct the self-adjoint extensions, we derive the thermodynamic Bethe Ansatz equations. We show that due to non-symmetric and singular kernel, the self-consistency implies that only negative chemical p…
We construct analytic solutions describing black holes and black branes in asymptotically Lifshitz spacetimes with arbitrary dynamical exponent z and for arbitrary number of dimensions. The model considered consists of Einstein gravity with negative cosmological constant, a scalar, and N U(1) gauge fields with dilatonic-like couplings. We study the phase diagrams and thermodynamic instabilities of the solution, and find qualitative differences between the cases with 1<= z<2, z=2 and z>2.
In this paper, we construct a new class of topological black hole Lifshitz solutions in the presence of nonlinear exponential electrodynamics for Einstein-dilaton gravity. We show that the reality of Lifshitz supporting Maxwell matter fields exclude the negative horizon curvature solutions except for the asymptotic AdS case. Calculating the conserved and thermodynamical quantities, we obtain a Smarr type formula for the mass and confirm that thermodynamics first law is satisfied on the black hole horizon. Afterward, we study the thermal stability of our solutions and figure out the effects of …
We compute string theoretic black hole solutions having Lifshitz asymptotics with a general dynamical exponent z>1. We start by constructing solutions in a flux compactification of six dimensional supergravity, then uplift them to massive type IIA supergravity. Alongside the Lifshitz black holes we study the simpler anti-de Sitter solutions, of which there are a 1-parameter family in this supergravity, and compare and contrast their properties. The black holes are characterized by a two-form and scalar charge, and we numerically explore their configuration space and thermodynamical aspects.
