We consider the high energy limit of the colour ordered one-loop five-gluon amplitude in the planar maximally supersymmetric N=4 Yang-Mills theory in the multi-Regge kinematics where all of the gluons are strongly ordered in rapidity. We apply the calculation of the one-loop pentagon in D=6-2 eps performed in a companion paper to compute the one-loop five-gluon amplitude through to O(eps^2). Using the factorisation properties of the amplitude in the high-energy limit, we extract the one-loop gluon-production vertex to the same accuracy, and, by exploiting the iterative structure of the gluon-production vertex implied by the BDS ansatz, we perform the first computation of the two-loop gluon-production vertex up to and including finite terms.
In this paper, we study the tree amplitudes with gluons coupled to gravitons. We first study the relations among the mixed amplitudes. With BCFW on-shell recursion relation, we will show the color-order reversed relation, $U(1)$-decoupling relation and KK relation hold for tree amplitudes with gluons coupled to gravitons. We then study the disk relation which expresses mixed amplitudes by pure gluon amplitudes. More specifically we will prove the disk relation for mixed amplitudes with gluons coupled to one graviton. Using the disk relation and the properties of pure gluon amplitudes, the colo…
We present the tree-level five-point amplitude of the lowest KK mode of SYM on AdS$_5$$\times$S$^3$, dual to the correlator of the flavor current multiplet in the dual 4d ${\cal N}=2$ SCFT. Its color and kinematical structure is particularly simple and resembles that of the flat-space gluon amplitude.
In this note, we propose that the infrared structure of gluon amplitudes at strong coupling can be fully extracted from a local consideration near cusps. This is consistent with field theory and correctly reproduces the infrared divergences of the four-gluon amplitude at strong coupling calculated recently by Alday and Maldacena.
As a test of the gluon scattering amplitude/Wilson loop duality, we evaluate the hexagonal light-like Wilson loop at two loops in N=4 super Yang-Mills theory. We compare its finite part to the Bern-Dixon-Smirnov (BDS) conjecture for the finite part of the six-gluon amplitude. We find that the two expressions have the same behavior in the collinear limit, but they differ by a non-trivial function of the three (dual) conformally invariant variables. This implies that either the BDS conjecture or the gluon amplitude/Wilson loop duality fails for the six-gluon amplitude, starting from two loops. O…
Pasterski, Shao and Strominger have recently proposed that massless scattering amplitudes can be mapped to correlators on the celestial sphere at infinity via a Mellin transform. We apply this prescription to arbitrary $n$-point tree-level gluon amplitudes. The Mellin transforms of MHV amplitudes are given by generalized hypergeometric functions on the Grassmannian $Gr(4,n)$, while generic non-MHV amplitudes are given by more complicated Gelfand $A$-hypergeometric functions.
Recently, spin-one wavefunctions in four dimensions that are conformal primaries of the Lorentz group SL(2,C) were constructed. We compute low-point, tree-level gluon scattering amplitudes in the space of these conformal primary wavefunctions. The answers have the same conformal covariance as correlators of spin-one primaries in a 2d CFT. The BCFW recursion relation between three- and four-point gluon amplitudes is recast into this conformal basis.
Starting from the effective action of high energy QCD we derive Ward identities for Green's functions of reggeized gluons. They follow from the gauge invariance of the effective action, and allow to derive new representations of amplitudes containing physical particles as well as reggeized gluons. We explicitly demonstrate their validity for the BFKL kernel, and we present a new derivation of the kernel.
We evaluate all next-to-maximal helicity violating (NMHV) six-gluon amplitudes in type I open superstring theory in four dimensions, at the disk level, to all orders in alpha'. Although the computation utilizes supersymmetric Ward identities, the result holds for all compactifications, even for those that break supersymmetry and is completely model-independent. Together with the maximally helicity violating (MHV) amplitudes presented in the previous work, our results provide the complete six-gluon disk amplitude.
We show that the Mellin transform of an $n$-point tree level MHV gluon scattering amplitude, also known as the celestial amplitude in pure Yang-Mills theory, satisfies a system of $(n-2)$ linear first order partial differential equations corresponding to $(n-2)$ positive helicity gluons. Although these equations closely resemble Knizhnik-Zamolodchikov equations for $SU(N)$ current algebra there is also an additional "correction" term coming from the subleading soft gluon current algebra. These equations can be used to compute the leading term in the gluon-gluon OPE on the celestial sphere. Sim…
We present an analytic expression for the six-point all-plus helicity amplitude in QCD at two-loops. We compute the rational terms in a compact analytic form organised by their singularity structure.
We detail the calculation of two-loop all-plus helicity amplitudes for pure Yang-Mills theory. The four dimensional unitarity methods and augmented recursion techniques we have developed, together with a knowledge of the singular structure of the amplitudes allow us to compute these in compact analytic forms. Specifically we present the computation and analytic results for the six- and seven-gluon leading colour two-loop amplitudes these being the first QCD two-loop amplitudes beyond five-points.
We use the AdS/CFT prescription of Alday and Maldacena \cite{am} to analyze gluon 6-point scattering amplitudes at strong coupling in ${\cal N}=4$ SYM. By cutting and gluing we obtain AdS 6-point amplitudes that contain extra boundary conditions and come close to matching the field theory results. We interpret them as parts of the field theory amplitudes, containing only certain diagrams. We also analyze the collinear limits of 6- and 5-point amplitudes and discuss the results.
We show how the link variables of Arkani-Hamed, Cachazo, Cheung and Kaplan (ACCK), can be used to compute general gluon tree amplitudes in the twistor string. They arise from instanton sectors labelled by d, with d=n-1, where n is the number of negative helicities. Read backwards, this shows how the various forms for the tree amplitudes studied by ACCK can be grouped into contour integrals whose structure implies the existence of an underlying string theory.
In this article we consider n gluon color ordered, planar amplitudes in N=4 super Yang Mills at strong 't Hooft coupling. These amplitudes are approximated by classical surfaces in AdS_5 space. We compute the value of the amplitude for a particular kinematic configuration for a large number of gluons and find that the result disagrees with a recent guess for the exact value of the amplitude. Our results are still compatible with a possible relation between amplitudes and Wilson loops. In addition, we also give a prescription for computing processes involving local operators and asymptotic stat…
We construct a regularization for light-like polygonal Wilson loops in ${\cal N}=4$ SYM, which matches them to the off-shell MHV gluon scattering amplitudes. Explicit calculations are performed for the 1-loop four gluon case. The off light cone extrapolation has to be based on the local supersymmetric Wilson loop. The observed matching concerns Feynman gauge. Furthermore, the leading infrared divergent term is shown to be gauge parameter independent on 1-loop level.
We study the subleading-color (nonplanar) contributions to the four-gluon scattering amplitudes in N=4 supersymmetric SU(N) Yang-Mills theory. Using the formalisms of Catani and of Sterman and Tejeda-Yeomans, we develop explicit expressions for the infrared-divergent contributions of all the subleading-color L-loop amplitudes up to three loops, and make some conjectures for the IR behavior for arbitrary L. We also derive several intriguing relations between the subleading-color one- and two-loop four-gluon amplitudes and the four-graviton amplitudes of N=8 supergravity. The exact one- and two-…
An intriguing new duality between planar MHV gluon amplitudes and light-like Wilson loops in N=4 super Yang-Mills is investigated. We extend previous checks of the duality by performing a two-loop calculation of the rectangular and pentagonal Wilson loop. Furthermore, we derive an all-order broken conformal Ward identity for the Wilson loops and analyse its consequences. Starting from six points, the Ward identity allows for an arbitrary function of conformal invariants to appear in the expression for the Wilson loop. We compute this function at six points and two loops and discuss its implica…
We evaluate all split helicity gluon tree amplitudes in open twistor string theory. We show that these amplitudes satisfy the BCFW recurrence relations restricted to the split helicity case and, hence, that these amplitudes agree with those of gauge theory. To do this we make a particular choice of the sextic constraints in the link variables that determine the poles contributing to the contour integral expression for the amplitudes. Using the residue theorem to re-express this integral in terms of contributions from poles at rational values of the link variables, which we determine, we evalua…
We describe how to compute planar gluon scattering amplitudes at strong coupling in N=4 super Yang Mills by using the gauge/string duality. The computation boils down to finding a certain classical string configuration whose boundary conditions are determined by the gluon momenta. The results are infrared divergent. We introduce the gravity version of dimensional regularization to define finite quantities. The leading and subleading IR divergencies are characterized by two functions of the coupling that we compute at strong coupling. We compute also the full finite form for the four point ampl…
The gluon tree amplitudes of open twistor string theory, defined as contour integrals over the ACCK link variables, are shown to satisfy the BCFW relations, thus confirming that they coincide with the corresponding amplitudes in gauge field theory. In this approach, the integration contours are specified as encircling the zeros of certain constraint functions that force the appropriate relation between the link variables and the twistor string world-sheet variables. To do this, methods for calculating the tree amplitudes using link variables are developed further including diagrammatic methods…
In a recent paper, here referred to as part I, we considered the celestial four-gluon amplitude with one gluon represented by the shadow transform of the corresponding primary field operator. This correlator is ill-defined because it contains branch points related to the presence of conformal blocks with complex spin. In this work, we adopt a procedure similar to minimal models and construct a single-valued completion of the shadow correlator, in the limit when the shadow is "soft." By following the approach of Dotsenko and Fateev, we obtain an integral representation of such a single-valued c…
We study gluon scattering amplitudes in N=4 super Yang-Mills theory at strong coupling via the AdS/CFT correspondence. We solve numerically the discretized Euler-Lagrange equations on the square worldsheet for the minimal surface with light-like boundaries in AdS spacetime. We evaluate the area of the surface for the 4, 6 and 8-point amplitudes using worldsheet and radial cut-off regularizations. Their infrared singularities in the cut-off regularization are found to agree with the analytical results near the cusp less than 5% at 520x520 lattice points.
Generalised unitarity techniques are used to calculate the coefficients of box and triangle integral functions of one-loop gluon scattering amplitudes in gauge theories with $N < 4$ supersymmetries. We show that the box coefficients in N=1 and N=0 theories inherit the same coplanar and collinear constraints as the corresponding N=4 coefficients. We use triple cuts to determine the coefficients of the triangle integral functions and present, as an example, the full expression for the one-loop amplitude $A^{N=1}(1^-,2^-,3^-,4^+,..,n^+)$.

Pfaffian diagrams are formulated to represent gluon amplitudes computed from the Cachazo-He-Yuan (CHY) formula. They may be regarded as a systematic regrouping of Feynman diagrams after internal momenta are expanded and products of vertex factors are evaluated. This reprocessing enables gluon amplitudes expressed in Pfaffian diagrams to contain less terms. For example, there are 19 terms for the four-point amplitude in Pfaffian diagrams, and 35 terms in Feynman diagrams. Gauge invariance is simpler and more explicit in Pfaffian diagrams, in that subset of diagrams with the same root configurat…
We compute two infinite series of tree-level amplitudes with a massive scalar pair and an arbitrary number of gluons. We provide results for amplitudes where all gluons have identical helicity, and amplitudes with one gluon of opposite helicity. These amplitudes are useful for unitarity-based one-loop calculations in nonsupersymmetric gauge theories generally, and QCD in particular.
Recently, Bjerrum-Bohr, Damgaard, Feng and Sondergaard derived a set of new interesting quadratic identities of the Yang-Mills tree scattering amplitudes. Here we comment that these quadratic identities of YM amplitudes actually follow directly from the KLT relation for graviton-dilaton-axion scattering amplitudes (in 4 dimensional spacetime). This clarifies their physical origin and also provides a simpler version of the new identities. We also comment that the recently discovered Bern-Carrasco-Johansson identities of YM helicity amplitudes can be verified by using (repeatedly) the Schouten i…
We examine the gluon scattering amplitude in N=4 super Yang-Mills at finite temperature with nonzero R-charge densities, and in Non-Commutative gauge theory at finite temperature. The gluon scattering amplitude is defined as a light-like Wilson loop which lives at the horizon of the T-dual black holes of the backgrounds we consider. We study in detail a special amplitude, which corresponds to forward scattering of a low energy gluon off a high energy one. For this kinematic configuration in the considered backgrounds, we find the corresponding minimal surface which is directly related to the g…
We discuss gluon scattering amplitudes/null-polygonal Wilson loops of N = 4 super Yang-Mills theory at strong coupling based on the gauge/string duality and its underlying integrability. We focus on the amplitudes/Wilson loops corresponding to the minimal surfaces in AdS_3, which are described by the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz equations of the homogeneous sine-Gordon model. Using conformal perturbation theory and an interesting relation between the g-function (boundary entropy) and the T-function, we derive analytic expansions around the limit where the Wilson loops become regular-polygonal. W…
Tree-level scattering amplitudes for gravitons, gluons and Goldstone particles in any dimensions are strongly constrained by basic principles, and they are intimately related to each other via various relations. We study two types of "universal expansions" with respect to gauge bosons and Goldstone bosons: the former express tree amplitudes in Einstein gravity (Yang-Mills) as linear combinations of single-trace Einstein-Yang-Mills (Yang-Mills-$ϕ^3$) amplitudes with coefficients given by Lorentz products of polarizations and momenta; the latter express tree amplitudes in non-linear sigma model,…
We show how the holomorphic anomaly found in hep-th/0409245 can be used to efficiently compute certain classes of unitarity cuts of one-loop N=4 amplitudes of gluons. These classes include all cuts of n-gluon one-loop MHV amplitudes and of n-gluon next-to-MHV amplitudes with helicities (1+,2+,3+,4-,..., n-). As an application of this method, we present the explicit computation of the (1,2,3)-cut of the n-gluon one-loop N=4 leading-color amplitude A_{n;1}(1+,2+,3+,4-,..., n-). The answer is given in terms of scalar box functions and provides information about the corresponding amplitudes. A pos…
We compute all $2\to5$ gluon scattering amplitudes in planar $\mathcal{N}=4$ super-Yang-Mills theory in the multi-Regge limit that is sensitive to the non-trivial ("long") Regge cut. We provide the amplitudes through four loops and to all logarithmic accuracy at leading power, in terms of single-valued multiple polylogarithms of two variables. To obtain these results, we leverage the function-level results for the amplitudes in the Steinmann cluster bootstrap. To high powers in the series expansion in the two variables, our results agree with the recently conjectured all-order central emission…
We compare the two-loop corrections to the finite part of the light-like hexagon Wilson loop with the recent numerical results for the finite part of the MHV six-gluon amplitude in N=4 SYM theory by Bern, Dixon, Kosower, Roiban, Spradlin, Vergu and Volovich (arXiv:0803.1465 [hep-th]) and demonstrate that they coincide within the error bars and, at the same time, they differ from the BDS ansatz by a non-trivial function of (dual) conformal kinematical invariants. This provides strong evidence that the Wilson loop/scattering amplitude duality holds in planar N=4 SYM theory to all loops for an ar…
The one loop gluon - W-meson amplitude is calculated by means of the gauge-invariant generalized Pauli-Villars regularization and with the help of dimensional regularization. It is shown that in the former case the amplitude satisfies Generalized Ward Identities, whereas in the latter case the amplitude differs from the first one by the constant.
We give a representation of the parity-even part of the planar two-loop six-gluon MHV amplitude of N=4 super-Yang-Mills theory, in terms of loop-momentum integrals with simple dual conformal properties. We evaluate the integrals numerically in order to test directly the ABDK/BDS all-loop ansatz for planar MHV amplitudes. We find that the ansatz requires an additive remainder function, in accord with previous indications from strong-coupling and Regge limits. The planar six-gluon amplitude can also be compared with the hexagonal Wilson loop computed by Drummond, Henn, Korchemsky and Sokatchev i…
We use supersymmetric Ward identities to relate multi-gluon helicity amplitudes involving a pair of massive quarks to amplitudes with massive scalars. This allows to use the recent results for scalar amplitudes with an arbitrary number of gluons obtained by on-shell recursion relations to obtain scattering amplitudes involving top quarks.
We calculate the one loop amplitudes for the two gluon scattering process in light cone gauge with fermions and scalars circulating in the loop. This extends the earlier works, in which only the gluon circulates the loop. By putting all fields in the adjoint representation with N_f=2, N_s=6, the scattering amplitude of gluon by gluon in the special case of N=4 Super Yang-Mills can be obtained. The massive fermion and scalar with arbitrary representations are also considered.
We compute the next-to-MHV one-loop n-gluon amplitudes in N=4 super-Yang-Mills theory. These amplitudes contain three negative-helicity gluons and an arbitrary number of positive-helicity gluons, and are the first infinite series of amplitudes beyond the simplest, MHV, amplitudes. We also discuss some aspects of their twistor-space structure.
We introduce a notion of holonomy in twistor space and construct a holonomy operator by use of a spinor-momenta formalism in twistor space. The holonomy operator gives a monodromy representation of the Knizhnik-Zamolodchikov (KZ) equation, which is mathematically equivalent to a linear representation of a braid group. We show that an S-matrix functional for gluon amplitudes can be expressed in terms of a supersymmetric version of the holonomy operator. A variety of mathematical and physical concepts, such as integrability, general covariance, Lorentz invariance and Yangian symmetry, are knit t…
Four-point one-loop nonsupersymmetric pure Yang-Mills amplitudes with the duality between color and kinematics manifest have been constructed in previous work. Here, we extend the discussion to fermions and scalars circulating in the loop with all external gluons. This gives another nontrivial loop-level example showing that the duality between color and kinematics holds in nonsupersymmetric gauge theory. The construction is valid in any spacetime dimension and written in terms of formal polarization vectors. We also convert these expressions into a four-dimensional form with explicit external…
We compute the non-MHV one-loop seven-gluon amplitudes in N=4 super-Yang-Mills theory, which contain three negative-helicity gluons and four positive-helicity gluons. There are four independent color-ordered amplitudes, (- - - + + + +), (- - + - + + +), (- - + + -+ +) and (- + - + - + +). The MHV amplitudes containing two negative-helicity and five positive-helicity gluons were computed previously, so all independent one-loop seven-gluon helicity amplitudes are now known for this theory. We present partial information about an infinite sequence of next-to-MHV one-loop helicity amplitudes, with…
We present an all-loop dispersion integral, well-defined to arbitrary logarithmic accuracy, describing the multi-Regge limit of the 2->5 amplitude in planar N=4 super Yang-Mills theory. It follows from factorization, dual conformal symmetry and consistency with soft limits, and specifically holds in the region where the energies of all produced particles have been analytically continued. After promoting the known symbol of the 2-loop N-particle MHV amplitude in this region to a function, we specialize to N=7, and extract from it the next-to-leading order (NLO) correction to the BFKL central em…
In this note we consider minimal surfaces in three dimensional anti-de Sitter space that end at the AdS boundary on a polygon given by a sequence of null segments. The problem can be reduced to a certain generalized Sinh-Gordon equation and to SU(2) Hitchin equations. The mathematical problem to be solved arises also in the context of the moduli space of certain three dimensional supersymmetric theories. We can use explicit results available in the literature in order to find the explicit answer for the area of a surface that ends on a eight-sided null Wilson loop. Via the gauge/gravity dualit…
Recently, Bern, Carrasco and Johansson conjectured dual identities inside the gluon tree scattering amplitudes. In this paper, we use the properties of the heterotic string and open string tree scattering amplitudes to refine and derive these dual identities. These identities can be carried over to loop amplitudes using the unitarity method. Furthermore, given the $M$-gluon (as well as gluon-gluino) tree amplitudes, $M$-graviton (as well as graviton-gravitino) tree scattering amplitudes can be written down immediately, avoiding the derivation of Feynman rules and the evaluation of Feynman diag…
We show that the gluon fusion amplitude in the gauge-Higgs unification scenario is finite in any dimension regardless of its nonrenormalizability. This result is supported by the fact that the local operator describing the gluon fusion process is forbidden by the higher dimensional gauge invariance. We explicitly calculate the gluon fusion amplitude in an arbitrary dimensional gauge-Higgs unification model and indeed obtain the finite result.
We present the two-loop pure gauge contribution to the gluon-gluon scattering amplitude with maximal helicity violation. Our construction of the amplitude does not rely directly on Feynman diagrams, but instead uses its analytic properties in 4 - 2 epsilon dimensions. We evaluate the loop integrals appearing in the amplitude through O(epsilon^0) in terms of polylogarithms.
We present a compact analytic expression for the leading colour two-loop five-gluon amplitude in Yang-Mills theory with a single negative helicity and four positive helicities. The analytic result is reconstructed from numerical evaluations over finite fields. The numerical method combines integrand reduction, integration-by-parts identities and Laurent expansion into a basis of pentagon functions to compute the coefficients directly from six-dimensional generalised unitarity cuts.
Using cutting techniques we obtain the two-loop N=4 super-Yang-Mills helicity amplitudes for four-gluon scattering in terms of scalar integral functions. The N=4 amplitudes are considerably simpler than corresponding QCD amplitudes and therefore provide a testing ground for exploring two-loop amplitudes. The amplitudes are constructed directly in terms of gauge invariant quantities and therefore remain relatively compact throughout the calculation. We also present a conjecture for the leading color four-gluon amplitudes to all orders in the perturbative expansion.
Recently a new recursion relation for tree-level gluon amplitudes in gauge theory has been discovered. We solve this recursion to obtain explicit formulas for the closed set of amplitudes with arbitrarily many positive and negative helicity gluons in a split helicity configuration. The solution admits a simple diagrammatic expansion in terms of zigzag diagrams. We comment on generalizations of this result.
We compute the planar part of the two-loop five gluon amplitude with all helicities positive. To perform the calculation we develop a D-dimensional generalized unitarity procedure allowing us to reconstruct the amplitude by cutting into products of six-dimensional trees. We find a compact form for the integrand which only requires topologies with six or more propagators. We perform cross checks of the universal infra-red structure using numerical integration techniques.
We present a conjecture for the $n$-gluon one-loop amplitudes with maximal helicity violation. The conjecture emerges from the powerful requirement that the amplitudes have the correct behavior in the collinear limits of external momenta. One implication is that the corresponding amplitudes where three or more gluon legs are replaced by photons vanish for $n>4$.
Virtual two-loop corrections to scattering amplitudes are a key ingredient to precision physics at collider experiments. We compute the full set of planar master integrals relevant to five-point functions in massless QCD, and use these to derive an analytical expression for the two-loop five-gluon all-plus-helicity amplitude. After subtracting terms that are related to the universal infrared and ultraviolet pole structure, we obtain a remarkably simple and compact finite remainder function, consisting only of dilogarithms.
We consider scattering processes involving N gluonic massless states of open superstrings with certain Regge slope alpha'. At the semi-classical level, the string world-sheet sweeps a disk and N gluons are created or annihilated at the boundary. We present exact expressions for the corresponding amplitudes, valid to all orders in alpha', for the so-called maximally helicity violating configurations, with N=4, 5 and N=6. We also obtain the leading O(alpha'^2) string corrections to the zero-slope N-gluon Yang-Mills amplitudes.
