We exactly calculate the quasinormal frequencies of the electromagnetic and Klein-Gordon perturbations propagating in a five-dimensional dilatonic black hole. Furthermore we exactly find the quasinormal frequencies of the massive Dirac field. Using these results we study the linear stability of this black hole. We compare our results for the quasinormal frequencies and for the linear stability of the five-dimensional black hole with those already published.
We study charged fermionic perturbations in the background of two-dimensional charged Dilatonic black holes, and we present the exact Dirac quasinormal modes. Also, we study the stability of these black holes under charged fermionic perturbations.
We calculate the quasinormal modes of static spherically symmetric dilatonic Reissner-Nordström black holes for general values of the electric charge and of the dilaton coupling constant. The spectrum of quasinormal modes is composed of five families of modes: polar and axial gravitational-led modes, polar and axial electromagnetic-led modes, and polar scalar-led modes. We make a quantitative analysis of the spectrum, revealing its dependence on the electric charge and on the dilaton coupling constant. For large electric charge and large dilaton coupling, strong deviations from the Reissner-No…
It has been recently found that for the near extremal Kerr black holes appearing of Zero Damped Modes (accompanied by qusinormal mode branching) signifies about inapplicability of the regime of small perturbations and the onset of turbulence. Here we show that this phenomena is not limited by Kerr or Kerr-Newman solutions only, but also takes place for rotating dilatonic black holes for which we have found Zero Damped Modes both numerically and analytically. We have also shown that, contrary to recent claims, there is no instability of a charged massive scalar field in the background of the ro…
We study the stability of black holes that are solutions of the dilaton gravity derived from string-theoretical models in two and five dimensions against to scalar field perturbations, using the Quasinormal Modes (QNMs) approach. In order to find the QNMs corresponding to a black hole geometry, we consider perturbations described by a massive scalar field non-minimally coupled to gravity. We find that the QNM's frequencies turn out to be pure imaginary leading to purely damped modes, that is in agreement with the literature of dilatonic black holes. Our result exhibits the unstable behavior of…
The rotating linear dilatonic black hole is an asymptotically non-flat solution to Einstein-Maxwell-Dilaton-Axion gravity theory due to the existence of non-trivial matter fields. We have analytically studied the wave equation of scalar field in this background and shown that the radial wave equation can be solved in terms of hypergeometric function. By determining the ingoing and the outgoing fluxes at the asymptotic infinity, we have found the analytical expressions for reflection coefficient and greybody factor for certain scalar modes. In the high frequency regime, we obtain the Hawking te…
Quasinormal modes of massless test scalar field in the background of gravitational field for a non-extremal dilatonic dyonic black hole are explored. The dyon-like black hole solution is considered in the gravitational $4d$ model involving two scalar fields and two 2-forms. It is governed by two 2-dimensional dilatonic coupling vectors $\vecλ_i$ obeying $\vecλ_i (\vecλ_1 + \vecλ_2) > 0$, $i =1,2$. The first law of black hole thermodynamics is given and the Smarr relation is verified. Quasinormal modes for a massless scalar (test) field in the eikonal approximation are obtained and analysed. Th…
We study fermionic perturbations in the background of a two and five-dimensional dilatonic black holes. Then, we compute the reflection and transmission coefficients and the absorption cross section for fermionic fields, and we show numerically that the absorption cross section vanishes in the low and high frequency limit. Also we find that beyond a certain value of the horizon radius $r_0$ the absorption cross section for five-dimensional dilatonic black hole is constant. Besides, we have find that the absorption cross section decreases for higher angular momentum, and it decreases when the m…
We study massive scalar fields and Dirac fields propagating in a five dimensional dilatonic black hole background. We expose that for both fields the physics can be describe by a two dimensional theory, near the horizon. Then, in this limit, by applying the covariant anomalies method we find the Hawking flux by restoring the gauge invariance and the general coordinate covariance, which coincides with the flux obtained from integrating the Planck distribution for fermions.
We study quasinormal modes of static Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet-dilaton black holes. Both axial and polar perturbations are considered and studied from $l=0$ to $l=3$. We emphasize the difference in the spectrum between the Schwarzschild solutions and dilatonic black holes. At large Gauss-Bonnet coupling constant a small secondary branch of black holes is present, when the dilaton coupling is sufficiently strong. The modes of the primary branch can differ from the Schwarzschild modes up to $10\%$. The secondary branch is unstable and possesses long-lived modes. We address the possible effects of th…
In this article, we study the stability of black hole solutions found in the context of dilatonic Horava-Lifshitz gravity in $1+1$ dimensions by means of the quasinormal modes approach. In order to find the corresponding quasinormal modes, we consider the perturbations of massive and massless scalar fields minimally coupled to gravity. In both cases, we found that the quasinormal modes have a discrete spectrum and are completely imaginary, which leads to damping modes. For a massive scalar field and a non-vanishing cosmological constant, our results suggest unstable behaviour for large values …
In this paper using the third-order WKB approximation, a numerical method devised by Schutz, Will and Iyer, we investigate the quasinormal frequencies of the scalar field in the background of five-dimensional Lovelock black hole. We find that the ultraviolet correction to Einstein theory in the Lovelock theory makes the scalar field decay more slowly and makes the scalar field oscillate more quickly, and the cosmological constant makes the scalar field decay more slowly and makes the scalar field oscillate more slowly in Lovelock black hole backgroud. On the other hand we also find that quasin…
We study the propagation of massless scalar fields non-minimally coupled to gravity in the background of five-dimensional Einstein-power-Maxwell black holes, and using the WKB and the pseudospectral Chebyshev methods we obtain the quasinormal frequencies (QNFs), which allow us to show the existence of stable and unstable QNFs depending on the power $k$ of the nonlinear electrodynamics, the $ξ$ parameter, which controls the strength of the non-minimal coupling, and on the size of the black hole.
We study the quasinormal modes of massive Dirac spinors in the background of rotating black holes. In particular, we consider the Kerr geometry as well as the five dimensional Myers-Perry spacetime with equal angular momenta. We decouple the equations using the standard methods from the literature. In the five dimensional Myers-Perry black hole the angular equation is solved analytically. Using the continued fraction method, we calculate the spectrum of quasinormal modes for the ground modes and first excited modes. We analyze, in a systematic way, its dependence on the different parameters of…
We address quasinormal modes of compact objects in several alternative theories of gravity. In particular, we focus on black holes and neutron stars with scalar hair. We consider black holes in dilaton-Einstein-Gauß-Bonnet theory, and in a generalized scalar-Einstein-Gauß-Bonnet theory. In the latter case scalarized black holes arise, and we study the stability of the different branches of solutions. In particular, we discuss how the spectrum of quasinormal modes is changed by the presence of a non-trivial scalar field outside the black hole horizon. We discuss the existence of an (effective) …
In this article charged black rings and black saturns are constructed in Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton theory in five dimensions. The neutral black ring and black saturn solutions are embedded in six dimensions and boosted with respect to the time coordinate and the added sixth dimension. Then the charged solutions are obtained by a Kaluza-Klein reduction. The influence of the charge is studied by analysing the physical properties and the phase diagram. The different dilatonic solutions are compared and their thermodynamic stability is considered.
We present the improved Mathematica code which computes quasinormal frequencies with the help of the Bernstein spectral method for a general class of black holes, allowing for asymptotically flat, de Sitter or anti-de Sitter asymptotic. The method is especially efficient when searching for purely imaginary and unstable modes and here it is used for detecting the instability region of a charged scalar field in the background of the charged asymptotically de Sitter dilatonic black hole. We show that the instability has superradiant nature and the dilaton field essentially influences the region o…
We investigate the localization of metastable four-dimensional gravity around a bent dilatonic brane, embedded into a five-dimensional space, that exists only up to distances sufficiently small compared to a crossover scale. Far from such scale, five-dimensional effects strongly deviate the Newtonian potential. We study this effect by considering localization of massive gravity on a non-BPS bent dilatonic 3-brane solution of a five-dimensional supergravity. Our results show that the cosmological constant on the bent brane controls the size of the crossover scale. For sufficiently small positiv…
We study Chern-Simons black holes in d-dimensions and we calculate analytically the quasinormal modes of fermionic perturbations. Also, we consider as background the five-dimensional Chern-Simons black hole with torsion and the BTZ black hole with torsion. We have found that the quasinormal modes depend on the highest power of curvature present in the Chern-Simons theory, such as occurs for the quasinormal modes of scalar perturbations. We also show that the effect of the torsion is to modify the real part of the quasinormal frequencies, which modify the oscillation frequency of the field for …
There has been some recent speculation that a connection may exist between the quasinormal-mode spectra of highly damped black holes and the fundamental theory of quantum gravity. This notion follows from a conjecture by Hod that the real part of the highly damped mode frequencies can be used to calibrate the semi-classical level spacing in the black hole quantum area spectrum. However, even if the level spacing can be fixed in this manner, it still remains unclear whether this implies a physically significant "duality" or merely a numerical coincidence. This tapestry of ideas serves as the mo…
We compute the spectrum of quasinormal frequencies of five-dimensional black holes obtained in noncommutative geometry. In particular, we study scalar perturbations of a massive scalar field adopting the 6th order WKB approximation. We investigate in detail the impact of the mass of the scalar field, the angular degree and the overtone number on the spectrum. All modes are found to be stable.
In this paper we investigate scalar perturbations of black holes embedded in a five dimensional bulk space. It is calculated the quasinormal frequencies of a such black holes using the third order of Wentzel, Kramers, Brillouin (WKB) approximation for scalar perturbations. The results are presented in tables along the text.
The objective of this paper is to construct the accurate (say, to 11 decimal places) frequencies of the quasinormal modes of the 5-dimensional Schwarzschild-Tangherlini black hole using three major techniques: the Hill determinant method, the continued fractions method and the WKB-Padé method and to discuss the limitations of each. It is shown that for the massless scalar, gravitational tensor, gravitational vector and electromagnetic vector perturbations considered in this paper, the Hill determinant method and the method of continued fractions (both with the convergence acceleration) always …
We derive and solve the full set of scalar perturbation equations for a class of $Z_2$-symmetric five-dimensional geometries generated by a bulk cosmological constant and by a 3-brane non-minimally coupled to a bulk dilaton field. The massless scalar modes, like their tensor analogues, are localized on the brane, and provide long-range four-dimensional dilatonic interactions, which are generically present even when matter on the brane carries no dilatonic charge. The shorter-range corrections induced by the continuum of massive scalar modes are always present: they persist even in the case of …
We show that the four-dimensional extreme dilaton black hole with dilaton coupling constant $a= \sqrt{p/(p+2)}$ can be interpreted as a {\it completely non-singular}, non-dilatonic, black $p$-brane in $(4+p)$ dimensions provided that $p$ is {\it odd}. Similar results are obtained for multi-black holes and dilatonic extended objects in higher spacetime dimensions. The non-singular black $p$-brane solutions include the self-dual three brane of ten-dimensional N=2B supergravity and a multi-fivebrane solution of eleven-dimensional supergravity. In the case of a supersymmetric non-dilatonic $p$-bra…
We studied in detail the propagation of a massive tachyonic scalar field in the background of a five-dimensional ($5D$) Einstein--Yang--Mills--Born--Infeld--dilaton black string: the massive Klein--Gordon equation was solved, exactly. Next we obtained complete analytical expressions for the greybody factor, absorption cross-section, and decay-rate for the tachyonic scalar field in the geometry under consideration. The behaviors of the obtained results are graphically represented for different values of the theory's free parameters. We also discuss why tachyons should be used instead of ordinar…
We consider a cosmological brane moving in a static five-dimensional bulk spacetime endowed with a scalar field whose potential is exponential. After studying various cosmological behaviours for the homogeneous background, we investigate the fluctuations of the brane that leave spacetime unaffected. A single mode embodies these fluctuations and obeys a wave equation which we study for bouncing and ever-expanding branes.
We calculate the quasinormal modes (QNMs) for gravitational perturbations of the Schwarzschild black hole in the five dimensional (5D) spacetime with a continued fraction method. For all the types of perturbations (scalar-gravitational, vector-gravitational, and tensor-gravitational perturbations), the QNMs associated with l=2, l=3, and l=4 are calculated. Our numerical results are summarized as follows: (i) The three types of gravitational perturbations associated with the same angular quantum number l have a different set of the quasinormal (QN) frequencies; (ii) There is no purely imaginary…
In this paper, we consider the Einstein-massive gravity coupled to the Yang-Mills gauge field in five dimensions. Concentrating on the static solutions with planar horizon geometry, we explore the thermodynamic behavior in the extended phase space and examine the validity of the first law of thermodynamics besides local thermal stability by the Hessian matrix. We observe that although the topology of boundary is planar, there exists the van der Waals like phase transition for this kind of solution. We find the critical quantities and discuss how the massive and Yang-Mills parameters affect the…
It is well-known that the non-strictly thermal character of the Hawking radiation spectrum generates a natural correspondence between Hawking radiation and black hole quasinormal modes. This main issue has been analyzed in the framework of Schwarzschild black holes, Kerr black holes and nonextremal Reissner-Nordstrom black holes. In this paper, by introducing the effective temperature, we reanalysis the non-strictly thermal character of large AdS black holes. The results show that the effective mass corresponding to the effective temperature is approximatively the average one in any dimension.…
Quasinormal modes of a scalar field perturbation are investigated in the background spacetime of Einstein-Yang-Mills black holes. The logarithmic term in the metric function of the five-dimensional Einstein-Yang-Mills black hole eliminates the divergence of the Hawking temperature but maintains the charge-dependent behavior of the quasinormal modes. The real and imaginary parts of quasinormal mode frequencies have the same charge-dependent behavior in different dimensions. Similar to the case of high dimensional Schwarzschild black holes, a compact approximate relation, $ω_{\rm R}\sim D/r_{+}$…
We analytically calculate to leading order the asymptotic form of quasinormal frequencies of Kerr black holes in four, five and seven dimensions. All the relevant quantities can be explicitly expressed in terms of elliptical integrals. In four dimensions, we confirm the results obtained by Keshest and Hod by comparing the analytic results to the numerical ones.
We describe a solution-generating technique that will map a static charged solution of the Einstein-Maxwell theory in four (or five) dimensions to a five-dimensional solution of the Einstein-Maxwell-Dilaton theory. As examples of this technique first we show first how to construct the dilatonic version of the Reissner-Nordström solution in five dimensions and then we consider the more general case of the double black hole solutions and describe some of their properties. We found that in the general case the value of the conical singularities in between the black holes is affected by the dilato…
Null geodesics, quasinormal modes of a massless scalar field perturbation and the correspondence with shadow radii are investigated in the background spacetime of high-dimensional Einstein-Yang-Mills black holes. Based on the properties of null geodesics, we obtain the connection between the radius of a photon sphere and the radius of a horizon in the five- and six-dimensional Einstein-Yang-Mills spacetimes. Especially in the five-dimensional case, there exist two branches for the radius of a photon sphere, but only the branch outside the event horizon satisfies the condition of circular null …
We study the quasinormal modes of scalar perturbation in the background of five-dimensional charged Kaluza-Klein black holes with squashed horizons immersed in the Gödel universe. Besides the influence due to the compactness of the extra dimension, we disclose the cosmological rotational effect in the wave dynamics. The wave behavior affected by the Gödel parameter provides an interesting insight into the Gödel universe.
AdS black holes show richer transition behaviors in extended phase space by assuming the cosmological constant and its conjugate quantity to behave like thermodynamic pressure and thermodynamic volume. We study the extended thermodynamics of charged dilatonic AdS black holes in a class of Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton theories that can be embedded in gauged supergravities in various dimensions. We find that the transition behaviors of higher dimensional dilatonic AdS black holes are different from the four dimensional counterparts, and new transition behaviors emerges in higher dimensions. First, t…
We compute the quasinormal frequencies for scalar perturbations of charged black holes in five-dimensional Einstein-power-Maxwell theory. The impact on the spectrum of the electric charge of the black holes, of the angular degree, of the overtone number, and of the mass of the test scalar field is investigated in detail. The quasinormal spectra in the eikonal limit are computed as well for several different space-time dimensionalities.
In this paper we present a new approach to the inverse problem for relativistic stars using quasinormal modes and the piecewise polytropic parametrization of the equation of state. The algorithm is a piecewise polytropic meshing and refinement method that reconstructs the neutron star equation of state from experimental data of the mass and the $wI$-quasinormal modes. We present an algorithm able to numerically calculate axial quasinormal modes of neutron stars in an efficient way. We use an initial mesh of $27440$ equations of state in a $4$-volume of piecewise polytropic parameters that cont…
We present a new method for determining the frequencies and wavefunctions of black hole quasinormal modes (QNMs) and Regge poles. The key idea is a novel ansatz for the wavefunction, which relates the high-$l$ wavefunctions to null geodesics which start at infinity and end in perpetual orbit on the photon sphere. Our ansatz leads naturally to the expansion of QNMs in inverse powers of angular momentum $L = l + 1/2$ (in 4D), and to the expansion of Regge poles in inverse powers of frequency. The expansions can be taken to high orders. We begin by applying the method to the Schwarzschild spaceti…
We construct a broad family of exact solutions to the five-dimensional Einstein equations coupled to a scalar field with an exponential potential. Embedding a three-brane in these bulk space-times in a particular way we obtain a class of self-tuned curved brane worlds in which the vacuum energy on the brane is gravitationally idle, the four-dimensional geometry being insensitive to the value of the brane tension. This self-tuning arises from cancellations, enforced by the junction conditions, between the scalar field potential, the brane vacuum energy and the matter on the brane. Finally, we s…
We investigate highly damped quasinormal mode of single-horizon black holes motivated by its relation to the loop quantum gravity. Using the WKB approximation, we show that the real part of the frequency approaches the value $T_{\rm H}\ln 3$ for dilatonic black hole as conjectured by Medved et al. and Padmanabhan. It is surprising since the area specrtum of the black hole determined by the Bohr's correspondence principle completely agrees with that of Schwarzschild black hole for any values of the electromagnetic charge or the dilaton coupling. We discuss its generality for single-horizon blac…
We study quasinormal modes (QNMs) in 5D electrically charged Bardeen black holes spacetime by considering the scalar and electromagnetic field perturbations. The black holes spacetime is an exact solution of Einstein gravity coupled to nonlinear electrodynamics in five dimensions, which has nonsingular behavior. To calculate QNMs, we use the WKB approximation method up to sixth order. Due to the presence of electric charge $q_e > 0$, both the scalar and electromagnetic field perturbations decay more slowly when compared to the Schwarzschild-Tangherlini black holes. We discover that the scalar …
We make a thorough investigation of the asymptotic quasinormal modes of the four and five-dimensional Schwarzschild black hole for scalar, electromagnetic and gravitational perturbations. Our numerical results give full support to all the analytical predictions by Motl and Neitzke, for the leading term. We also compute the first order corrections analytically, by extending to higher dimensions, previous work of Musiri and Siopsis, and find excellent agreement with the numerical results. For generic spacetime dimension number D the first-order corrections go as $\frac{1}{n^{(D-3)/(D-2)}}$. This…
We study the spectrum of quasinormal mode frequencies for a Proca field on a rotating black hole spacetime. First, we review how the introduction of field mass modifies the spectrum in the scalar-field case, leading to evanescent modes and to quasiresonance. Next, we examine the three physical polarizations of the Proca field and their relation to the electromagnetic field modes in the massless limit. Exploiting a separation of variables, we obtain a five-term recurrence relation from an appropriate ansatz for the radial function. Gaussian elimination and the modified Lentz algorithm are appli…
We study the geodesics of a five dimensional non-asymptotically flat dilatonic 2-brane. Although the metric's warp function diverges logarithmically in the far field region of the transverse space, the curvature does not. The brane has two naked singularities, the usual central singularity and a circular singularity at the radius where the warp function vanishes. This creates two causally disconnected regions of the transverse space. Using the methods of energy conservation and effective potentials we study the null and timelike orbital and radial geodesics in both regions and show that they e…
