Metals exhibit a size-dependent hardening when subject to indentation. Mechanisms for this phenomenon have been intensely researched in recent times. Does such a size-effect also exist in the electromechanical behavior of ferroelectrics?--if yes, what are the operative mechanisms? Our experiments on BaTiO3 indeed suggest an electromechanical size-effect. We argue, through theoretical calculations and differential experiments on another non-ferroelectric piezoelectric (Quartz), that the phenomenon of flexoelectricity(as opposed to dislocation activity) is responsible for our observations. Flexoelectricity is the coupling of strain gradients to polarization and exists in both ordinary and piezoelectric dielectrics. In particular, ferroelectrics exhibit an unusually large flexoelectric response.
We investigate the electromechanical interactions in individual P(VDF-TrFE) nanowires in response to localized electrical poling via a conducting atomic force microscope tip. Spatially resolved measurements of piezoelectric coefficients and elastic moduli before and after poling reveal a striking dependence on the polarity of the poling field, notably absent in thin films of the same composition. These observations are attributed to the unclamped nature of the nanowires and the inherent asymmetry in their chemical and electrical interactions with the tip and underlying substrate. Our findings …
Space charge dynamics in solid electrolytes with steric effect and Vegard stresses: resistive switching and ferroelectric-like hysteresis of electromechanical response
Ferroelectric materials have remained one of the foci of condensed matter physics and materials science for over 50 years. In the last 20 years, the development of voltage-modulated scanning probe microscopy techniques, exemplified by Piezoresponse force microscopy (PFM) and associated time and voltage spectroscopies, opened a pathway to explore these materials on a single-digit nanometer level. Consequently, domain structures, walls and polarization dynamics can now be imaged in real space. More generally, PFM has allowed studying electromechanical coupling in a broad variety of materials ran…
Lead free, silicon compatible materials showing large electromechanical responses comparable to, or better than conventional relaxor ferroelectrics, are desirable for various nanoelectromechanical devices and applications. Defect-engineered electrostriction has recently been gaining popularity to obtain enhanced electromechanical responses at sub 100 Hz frequencies. Here, we report record values of electrostrictive strain coefficients (M31) at frequencies as large as 5 kHz (1.04 x 10-14 m2 per V2 at 1 kHz, and 3.87 x 10-15 m2 per V2 at 5 kHz) using A-site and oxygen-deficient barium titanate t…
The role of defects in solids of mixed ionic-covalent bonds such as ferroelectric oxides is complex. Current understanding of defects on ferroelectric properties at the single-defect level remains mostly at the empirical level, and the detailed atomistic mechanisms for many defect-mediated polarization-switching processes have not been convincingly revealed quantum mechanically. We simulate the polarization-electric field (P-E) and strain-electric field ({$ε$}-E) hysteresis loops for BaTiO3 in the presence of generic defect dipoles with large-scale molecular dynamics and provide a detailed ato…

The interest in ferroelectric van der Waals crystals arises from the potential to realize ultrathin ferroic systems owing to the reduced surface energy of these materials and the layered structure that allows for exfoliation. Here, we quantitatively unravel giant negative electrostriction of van der Waals layered copper indium thiophosphate (CIPS), which exhibits an electrostrictive coefficient Q33 as high as -3.2 m4/C2 and a resulting bulk piezoelectric coefficient d33 up to -85 pm/V. As a result, the electromechanical response of CIPS is comparable in magnitude to established perovskite ferr…
Domains walls and topological defects in ferroelectric materials have emerged as a powerful new paradigm for functional electronic devices including memory and logic. Similarly, wall interactions and dynamics underpin a broad range of mesoscale phenomena ranging from giant electromechanical responses to memory effects. Exploring the functionalities of individual domain walls, their interactions, and controlled modifications of the domain structures is crucial for applications and fundamental physical studies. However, the dynamic nature of these features severely limits studies of their local …
Origin of the large phonon band-gap in SrTiO3 and the vibrational signatures of ferroelectricity in ATiO3 perovskite: First principles lattice dynamics and inelastic neutron scattering of PbTiO3, BaTiO3 and SrTiO3
Relaxor ferroelectrics, which can exhibit exceptional electromechanical coupling are some of the most important functional materials with applications ranging from ultrasound imaging to actuators and sensors in microelectromechanical devices. Since their discovery nearly 60 years ago, the complexity of nanoscale chemical and structural heterogeneity in these systems has made understanding the origins of their unique electromechanical properties a seemingly intractable problem. A full accounting of the mechanisms that connect local structure and chemistry with nanoscale fluctuations in polariza…
Enhanced room-temperature electromechanical coupling in the lead-free ferroelectric system $(1-x)$BaZr$_{0.2}$Ti$_{0.8}$O$_{3}$ - $x$Ba$_{0.7}$Ca$_{0.3}$TiO$_{3}$ (abbreviated as BZCT) at $x=0.5$ is attributed to the existence of a morphotropic phase region (MPR) containing an intermediate orthorhombic ($O$) phase between terminal rhombohedral ($R$) BZT and tetragonal ($T$) BCT phases. However, there is ambiguity regarding the morphotropic phase transition in BZCT at room temperature - while some experiments suggest a single $O$ phase within the MPR, others indicate coexistence of three polar …
Piezoresponse force microscopy (PFM) has been extensively utilized as a versatile and an indispensable tool to understand and analyze nanoscale ferro- /piezoelectric properties by detecting the local electromechanical response on a sample surface. However, it has been discovered that the electromechanical response not only originates from piezoelectricity but also from other factors such as the electrostatic effect. In this study, we explore the dependence of off-field PFM hysteresis loops on the surface-potential-induced electrostatic effect in a prototypical ferroelectric thin film by applyi…
We provide a fundamental insight into the microscopic mechanisms of the ageing processes. Using large scale molecular dynamics simulations of the prototypical ferroelectric material PbTiO3, we demonstrate that the experimentally observed ageing phenomena can be reproduced from intrinsic interactions of defect-dipoles related to dopant-vacancy associates, even in the absence of extrinsic effects. We show that variation of the dopant concentration modifies the material's hysteretic response. We identify a universal method to reduce loss and tune the electromechanical properties of inexpensive ce…
A stochastic model of electric field-driven polarization reversal in orthorhombic ferroelectrics is advanced, providing a description of their temporal electromechanical response. The theory accounts for all possible parallel and sequential switching events. Application of the model to the simultaneous measurements of polarization and strain kinetics in a lead-free orthorhombic (K,Na)NbO3-based ferroelectric ceramic over a wide timescale of 7 orders of magnitude allowed identification of preferable polarization switching paths, fractions of individual switching processes, and their activation …
The propagation front of a crack generates large strain gradients and it is therefore a strong source of gradient-induced polarization (flexoelectricity). Herein, we demonstrate that, in piezoelectric materials, a consequence of flexoelectricity is that crack propagation will be helped or hindered depending on whether it is parallel or antiparallel to the piezoelectric polar axis. This means that the theory of fracture physics can no longer assume mechanical symmetry in polar materials. The discovery of fracture asymmetry also has practical repercussions for the electromechanical fatigue of fe…
A stochastic model for the field-driven polarization reversal in rhombohedral ferroelectrics is developed, providing a description of their temporal electromechanical response. Application of the model to simultaneous measurements of polarization and strain kinetics in a rhombohedral Pb(Zr,Ti)O3 ceramic over a wide time window allows identification of preferable switching paths, fractions of individual switching processes, and their activation fields. Complementary, the phenomenological Landau-Ginzburg-Devenshire theory is used to analyze the impact of external field and stress on switching ba…

The thermal conductivity of polycrystalline bulk PZT (lead-zirconate-titanate) has been investigated according to electrical boundary conditions and poling. The thermal conductivity of poled PZT was measured in the poling direction for open circuit and short circuit conditions. The short circuit thermal conductivity had the largest thermal conductivity. The relationship between these two thermal properties, the electrothermal coupling factor $k_{33}^κ$, was found to be similar to the electromechanical coupling factor $k_{33}$ relating elastic compliance under short circuit and open circuit con…
Interactions between grain boundaries and domain walls were extensively studied in ferroelectric films and bicrystals. This knowledge, however, has not been transferred to polycrystalline ceramics, in which the grain size represents a powerful tool to tailor the dielectric and electromechanical response. Here, we relate changes in dielectric and electromechanical properties of a bulk polycrystalline Pb(Zr0.7Ti0.3)O3 to domain wall interactions with grain boundaries. Samples with grain sizes in the range of 3.9 - 10.4 micrometers were prepared and their microstructure, crystal structure, and di…
Piezoelectrics with negative longitudinal piezoelectric coefficients will contract in the direction of an applied electric field. Such piezoelectrics are thought to be rare but there is no fundamental physics preventing the realization of negative longitudinal piezoelectric effect in a single-phase material. Using first-principles calculations, we demonstrate that several hexagonal $ABC$ ferroelectrics possess significant negative longitudinal piezoelectric effect. The data mining of a first-principles-based database of piezoelectrics reveals that this effect is a general phenomenon. The origi…
Field-induced domain wall dynamics in ferroelectric materials underpins multiple applications ranging from actuators to information technology devices and necessitates a quantitative description of the associated mechanisms including giant electromechanical couplings, controlled non-linearities, or low coercive voltages. While the advances in dynamic Piezoresponse Force Microscopy measurements over the last two decades have rendered visualization of polarization dynamics relatively straightforward, the associated insights into the local mechanisms have been elusive. Here we explore the domain …
Recent investigations have shown that highly oxygen defective cerium oxides generate non-classical electrostriction that is superior to lead-based ferroelectrics. In this work, we report the effect of field-assisted spark plasma sintering (SPS) on electro-chemo-mechanical properties on Ca-doped ceria (CDC). Nanometric powders of ca. 10 nm are rapidly consolidated to form polycrystalline nanostructures with a high degree of crystalline disorder. Remarkably, the resultant material demonstrates a large electromechanical strain without a frequency-related relaxation effect. We conclude that electr…
We develop and implement an automated experiment in multimodal imaging to probe structural, chemical, and functional behaviors in complex materials and elucidate the dominant physical mechanisms that control device function. Here the emergence of non-linear electromechanical responses in piezoresponse force microscopy (PFM) is explored. Non-linear responses in PFM can originate from multiple mechanisms, including intrinsic material responses often controlled by domain structure, surface topography that affects the mechanical phenomena at the tip-surface junction, and, potentially, the presence…
We here report the substitution effects of the smaller Ca for the bulky Ba in (Ba1-xCax)(Ti1-yZry)O3 perovskite oxides for two systems (Ba1-xCax)TiO3 with y=0 and (Ba1-xCax)(Ti0.9Zr0.1)O3 with y=0.1. Ca off-centering was found to play a critical role in stabilizing the ferroelectric phase and tuning the polarization states in both systems. It was demonstrated that the atomic displacement due to Ca off-centering in the bulky Ba-site in the perovskite structure provides an effective approach to compensate the reduction of ferroelectricity due to the chemical pressure, which allows to keep the Cu…
We have studied the electrocaloric response of the archetypal antiferroelectric PbZrO3 as a function of voltage and temperature in the vicinity of its antiferroelectric-paraelectric phase transition. Large electrocaloric effects of opposite signs, ranging from an electro-cooling of -3.5 K to an electro-heating of +5.5 K, were directly measured with an infrared camera. We show by calorimetric and electromechanical measurements that the large negative electrocaloric effect comes from an endothermic antiferroelectric-ferroelectric switching, in contrast to dipole destabilization of the antiparall…
