Interactions between grain boundaries and domain walls were extensively studied in ferroelectric films and bicrystals. This knowledge, however, has not been transferred to polycrystalline ceramics, in which the grain size represents a powerful tool to tailor the dielectric and electromechanical response. Here, we relate changes in dielectric and electromechanical properties of a bulk polycrystalline Pb(Zr0.7Ti0.3)O3 to domain wall interactions with grain boundaries. Samples with grain sizes in the range of 3.9 - 10.4 micrometers were prepared and their microstructure, crystal structure, and dielectric/electromechanical properties were investigated. A decreasing grain size was accompanied by a reduction in large-signal electromechanical properties and an increase in small-signal dielectric permittivity. High-energy diffraction analysis revealed increasing microstrains upon decreasing the grain size, while piezoresponse force microscopy indicated an increased local coercive voltage near grain boundaries. The changes in properties were thus related to strained material volume close to the grain boundaries exhibiting reduced domain wall dynamics.
Bulk polycrystalline piezoelectric ceramics are extensively used in wide ranging applications as actuators, transducers, and sensors. For actuator applications, it is desirable that the piezoelectric ceramic gives as large electric field driven unipolar strain as possible. In recent years there is an increasing interest in the design and development of such piezoceramic materials. Here we show that piezoceramic discs (10 mm diameter) of PZT, BaTiO3-based and Na0.5Bi0.5TiO3-based polycrystalline piezoceramics can show very large unipolar strain 2 to 3 % when the thickness of the discs is reduce…
Recently we found that when conventional bulk polycrystalline piezoceramics discs (~ 10 mm diameter) are thinned down to thickness ~ 200 microns or below, the measured unipolar electrostrain (UES) values increased phenomenally (arXiv:2208.07134). Here we demonstrate that this anomalous phenomenon correlates strongly with the decrease in the degree of mutual mechanical clamping between the grains which in turn enables enhanced switching of the ferroelastic domains.
A formula of grain growth rate, based on a nonlinear capillarity-driven relation, is derived to predict and interpret realistic growth processes in polycrystalline systems. The derived formula reveals how the growth and stagnation of grains dominated by the correlated parameters (temperature, interfacial energy, step free energy, grain size and size distribution in polycrystalline system etc.). Our study provide a conclusive model of the growth and stagnation of grains, and thus offers helpful guides for the microstructural design to optimize the properties of polycrystalline materials.
Grain growth is a ubiquitous and fundamental phenomenon observed in the cellular structures with the grain assembly separated by a network of grain boundaries, including metals and ceramics. However, the underlying mechanism of grain growth has remained ambiguous for more than 60 years. The models for grain growth, based on the classically linear relationship between the grain boundary migration and capillary driving force, generally predict normal grain growth. Quantitative model for abnormal grain growth is lacking despite decades of efforts. Here, we present a unified model to reveal quanti…
Specimen- and grain-size effects on nanoscale plastic deformation mechanisms and mechanical properties of polycrystalline yttria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia (YSTZ) nanopillars are studied by molecular dynamics simulations. Through uniaxial compression of YSTZ columnar nanopillars, intergranular and transgranular deformation mechanisms are investigated. Cooperative intergranular deformations including grain boundary sliding and migration, grain rotation, and amorphous phase formation at grain boundaries are revealed. Results also reveal formation of partial dislocations, which act as splitte…
To investigate the barrier effect of grain boundaries on the propagation of avalanche-like plasticity at the atomic-scale, we perform three-dimensional molecular dynamics simulations by using simplified polycrystal models including symmetric-tilt grain boundaries. The cut-offs of stress-drop distributions following power-law distributions decrease as the size of the crystal grains decreases. We show that some deformation avalanches are confined by grain boundaries; on the other hand, unignorable avalanches penetrate all the grain boundaries included in the models. The blocking probability that…
Angular resolved measurements of the exchange bias field and the coercive field are a powerful tool to distinguish between different competing magnetic anisotropies in polycrystalline exchange bias layer systems. No simple analytical model is as yet available, which considers time dependent effects like enhanced coercivity arising from the grain size distribution of the antiferromagnet. In this work we expand an existing model class describing polycrystalline exchange bias systems by a rotatable magnetic anisotropy term to describe grain size correlated effects. Additionally, we performed angu…
In this work we computationally study the effect of microstructure on saturation magnetostriction of Terfenol-D (Tb$_{0.27}$Dy$_{0.73}$Fe$_{2}$) by means of Finite Element Method. The model is based on the equilibrium magnetoelastic strain tensor at magnetic saturation, and shows that the crystal orientation might play a more significant role on saturation magnetostriction than the morphology of the grains. We also calculate the dependence of saturation magnetostriction on the dispersion angle of the distribution of grains in the oriented growth crystal directions $<011>$ and $<111>$, finding …
Analytic expressions are presented for the dark current-voltage relation $J(V)$ of a $pn^+$ junction with positively charged columnar grain boundaries with high defect density. These expressions apply to non-depleted grains with sufficiently high bulk hole mobilities. The accuracy of the formulas is verified by direct comparison to numerical simulations. Numerical simulations further show that the dark $J(V)$ can be used to determine the open circuit potential $V_{\rm oc}$ of an illuminated junction for a given short-circuit current density $J_{\rm sc}$ . A precise relation between the grain b…
An innovative image analysis technique is proposed to process real solar cell pictures, identify grains and grain boundaries in polycrystalline Silicon, and finally generate finite element meshes. Using a modified intrinsic cohesive zone model approach to avoid mesh dependency, nonlinear finite element simulations show how grain boundaries and Silicon bulk properties influence the crack pattern. Numerical results demonstrate a prevalence of transgranular over intergranular cracking for similar interface fracture properties of grains and grain boundaries, in general agreement with the experimen…
Memristive switching in polycrystalline materials is widely attributed to the formation and rupture of conducting filaments, believed to be mediated by oxygen-vacancy redistribution. The underlying atomic-scale processes are still unknown, however, which limits device modeling and design. Here we combine experimental data with multi-scale calculations to elucidate the entire atomic-scale cycle in undoped polycrystalline BiFeO3. Conductive atomic force microscopy reveals that the grain boundaries behave like two-dimensional nanovaristors while, on the return part of the cycle, the decreasing cu…
Faces-classes of grains, often referred to as topological features, largely dictate the evolution of polycrystalline microstructures during grain growth. Realising these topological features is generally an arduous task, often demanding sophisticated techniques. In the present work, a distinct machine-learning algorithm is extended for the first time to comprehend the topological distribution of the grains constituting a polycrystalline continuum. This regression-based object-detection approach, besides significantly reducing human-efforts and ensuring computational efficiency, predicts the fa…
Thin film polycrystalline photovoltaics are a mature, commercially-relevant technology. However, basic questions persist about the role of grain boundaries in the performance of these materials, and the extent to which these defects may limit further progress. In this work, we first extend previous analysis of columnar grain boundaries to develop a model of the recombination current of "tilted" grain boundaries. We then consider systems with multiple, intersecting grain boundaries and numerically determine the parameter space for which our analytical model accurately describes the recombinatio…
Transition metal oxide thin films show versatile electrical, magnetic, and thermal properties which can be tailored by deliberately introducing macroscopic grain boundaries via polycrystalline solids. In this study, we focus on the modification of the magnetic and thermal transport properties by fabricating single- and polycrystalline epitaxial SrRuO3 thin films using pulsed laser epitaxy. Using epitaxial stabilization technique with atomically flat polycrystalline SrTiO3 substrate, epitaxial polycrystalline SrRuO3 thin film with crystalline quality of each grain comparable to that of single-c…
We use a phase field crystal model to generate large-scale bicrystalline and polycrystalline single-layer hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) samples and employ molecular dynamics (MD) simulations with the Tersoff many-body potential to study their heat transport properties. The Kapitza thermal resistance across individual h-BN grain boundaries is calculated using the inhomogeneous nonequilibrium MD method. The resistance displays strong dependence on the tilt angle, the line tension and the defect density of the grain boundaries. We also calculate the thermal conductivity of pristine h-BN and poly…
The magnetic characteristics of polycrystalline exchange-biased antiferromagnet/ferromagnet-bilayers are determined by a complex interplay of parameters, describing structural and magnetic properties of the material system, including in particular the grain volume distribution of the antiferromagnet. An ideal characterization of such systems would be a non-destructive determination of the relevant parameters for each individual grain. This is in most cases not feasible, since typical characterization methods do average over larger areas. Here, we show that it is however possible to determine a…
It is shown here that fracture after a brief plastic strain, typically of a few percents, is a necessary consequence of the polycrystalline nature of the materials. The polycrystal undergoing plastic deformation is modeled as a flowing continuum of random deformable polyhedra, representing the grains, which fill the space without leaving voids. Adjacent grains slide with a relative velocity proportional to the local shear stress resolved on the plane of the shared grain boundary, when greater than a finite threshold. The polyhedral grains reshape continuously to preserve matter continuity, bei…
Interfacial segregation can stabilize grain structures and even lead to grain boundary complexion transitions. However, understanding of the complexity of such phenomena in polycrystalline materials is limited, as most studies focus on bicrystal geometries. In this work, we investigate interfacial segregation and subsequent complexion transitions in polycrystalline Cu-Zr alloys using hybrid Monte Carlo/molecular dynamics simulations. No significant change in the grain size or structure is observed upon Zr dopant addition to a pure Cu polycrystal at moderate temperature, where grain boundary se…
Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations have been performed to investigate the fatigue deformation behaviour of polycrystalline Cu with grain size of 5.4 nm. The samples were prepared using Voronoi algorithm with random grain orientations. Fatigue simulations were carried out by employing fully reversed, total strain controlled cyclic loading at strain amplitude of $\pm4$\% for 10 cycles. The MD simulation results indicated that the deformation behaviour under cyclic loading is dominated by the slip of partial dislocations enclosing the stacking faults. At higher number of cycles, the grain bounda…
The effect of grain boundary (GB) structure, size and shape on thermal conductivity of polycrystalline graphene is studied in the framework of the deformation potential approach. Precise analytical expressions for the phonon mean free path (MFP) are obtained within the Born approximation. We found exactly two types of behavior in the long-wavelength limit: MFP varies as $k^{-1}$ for open GBs of any shape while it behaves as $k^{-3}$ for closed configurations (loops). In the short-wavelength limit MFP tends to a constant value for any configuration. Oscillatory behavior is observed for all GBs …
Particle pinning during grain growth -- A new analytical model for predicting the mean limiting grain size but also grain size heterogeneity in a 2D polycrystalline context
A continuum theory based on thermodynamics has been developed for modeling diffusional creep of polycrystalline solids. It consists of a coupled problem of vacancy diffusion and mechanics where the vacancy generation/absorption at grain boundaries is driven by grain boundary dislocations climb. The model is stated in terms of general balance laws and completed by the choice of constitutive equations consistent with classical non-equilibrium thermodynamics. The kinetics of diffusional creep is derived from physically-based mechanisms of climb of dislocations at grain boundaries, thus introducin…
Thermal conduction was explored and discussed through a combined theoretical and simulation approach in this work. The thermal conductivity k of polycrystalline graphene was calculated by molecular dynamics simulations based on a hexagonal patch model in close consistence with microstructural characterization in experiments. The effects of grain size, alignment, and temperature were identified with discussion on the microscopic phonon scattering mechanisms. The effective thermal conductivity is found to increase with the grain size and decrease with the mismatch angle and dislocation density a…
Graphene has attracted significant interest both for exploring fundamental science and for a wide range of technological applications. Chemical vapor deposition (CVD) is currently the only working approach to grow graphene at wafer scale, which is required for industrial applications. Unfortunately, CVD graphene is intrinsically polycrystalline, with pristine graphene grains stitched together by disordered grain boundaries, which can be either a blessing or a curse. On the one hand, grain boundaries are expected to degrade the electrical and mechanical properties of polycrystalline graphene, r…
A phenomenological model for magnetoresistance in granular polycrystalline colossal magnetoresistive materials: the role of spin polarised tunnelling at the grain boundaries
结果表明,La_(0.55)Ho_(0.15)Sr_(0.3)MnO_3的本征磁电阻效应随温度的变化符合双交换模型的预测.
Deformation heterogeneities within microstructures of polycrystalline shape memory alloys (SMAs) during superelastic stressing are studied using both experiments and simulations. In situ X-ray diffraction, specifically the far-field high energy diffraction microscopy (ff-HEDM) technique was used to non-destructively measure the grain-averaged statistics of position, crystal orientation, elastic strain tensor and volume for hundreds of austenite grains in a superelastically loaded nickel-titanium (NiTi) SMA. This experimental data were also used to create a synthetic microstructure within a fin…
Various machine learning models have been used to predict the properties of polycrystalline materials, but none of them directly consider the physical interactions among neighboring grains despite such microscopic interactions critically determining macroscopic material properties. Here, we develop a graph neural network (GNN) model for obtaining an embedding of polycrystalline microstructure which incorporates not only the physical features of individual grains but also their interactions. The embedding is then linked to the target property using a feed-forward neural network. Using the magne…

Unraveling impacts of polycrystalline microstructures on ionic conductivity of ceramic electrolytes by computational homogenization and machine learning
Titanium is commonly added to nickel superalloys but has a well-documented detrimental effect on oxidation resistance. The present work constitutes the first atomistic-scale quantitative measurements of grain boundary and bulk compositions in the oxide scale of a current generation polycrystalline nickel superalloy performed through atom probe tomography. Titanium was found to be particularly detrimental to oxide scale growth through grain boundary diffusion.
The rate of curvature-driven grain growth in polycrystalline materials is well-known to be limited by interface dissipation. We show analytically and by simulations that, for systems forming modulated phases or non-equilibrium patterns with crystal ordering, growth is limited by bulk dissipation associated with lattice translation, which dramatically slows down grain coarsening. We also show that bulk dissipation is reduced by thermal noise so that those systems exhibit faster coarsening behavior dominated by interface dissipation for high Peierls barrier and high noise. Those results provide …
Experiments, theory and atomistic simulations show that finite triple junction mobility results in non-equilibrium triple junction angles in evolving polycrystalline systems. These angles have been predicted and verified for cases where grain boundary migration is steady-state. Yet, steady-state never occurs during the evolution of polycrystalline microstructures as a result of changing grain size and topological events (e.g., grain face/edge switching - "$T_1$" process, or grain disappearance "$T_2$" or "$T_3$" processes). We examine the non-steady evolution of the triple junction angle in th…
The letter introduces a diagram that rationalizes tunneling atomic force microscopy (TUNA) observations of electron emission from polycrystalline diamonds as described in recent publications. The direct observations of electron emission from grain boundary sites by TUNA could indeed be evidence of electrons originating from grain boundaries under external electric fields. At the same time, from the diagram it follows that TUNA and field emission schemes are complimentary rather than equivalent for results interpretation. It is further proposed that TUNA could provide better insights into emiss…
Polymer-piezoceramic 0-3 composites combine the flexibility of the polymers and the excellent piezoelectric properties of the ferroelectric based ceramic. While grain size of the ceramic powder is one of the important considerations in the fabrication of such composites, a correlation relating poling field induced structural changes and its possible influence on the overall piezoelectric response of the composite is still lacking. In this paper, we examine this issue on a 0-3 piezo-composite comprising of a ceramic powders of a low-lead piezoelectric alloy (x)Bi(Ni1/2Zr1/2O3-(1-x)PbTiO3 in pro…
The microstructural and compositional evolution of intergranular carbides and borides prior to and after creep deformation at 850 $^\circ$C in a polycrystalline nickel-based superalloy was studied. Primary MC carbides, enveloped within intergranular $\rm γ'$ layers, decomposed resulting in the formation of layers of the undesirable $\rm η$ phase. These layers have a composition corresponding to Ni$_{3}$Ta as measured by atom probe tomography and their structure is consistent with the D0$_{24}$ hexagonal structure as revealed by transmission electron microscopy. Electron backscattered diffracti…
A vector order parameter phase field model derived from a grand potential functional is presented as a new approach for modeling polycrystalline solidification of alloys. In this approach, the grand potential density is designed to contain a discrete set of finite wells, a feature that naturally allows for the growth and controlled interaction of multiple grains using a single vector field. We verify that dendritic solidification in binary alloys follows the well-established quantitative behavior in the thin interface limit. In addition, it is shown that grain boundary energy and solute back-d…

Thermoelectric application of half-Heusler compounds suffers from their fairly high thermal conductivities. Insight into how effective various scattering mechanisms are in reducing the thermal conductivity of fabricated XNiSn compounds (X = Hf, Zr, Ti, and mixtures thereof) is therefore crucial. Here, we show that such insight can be obtained through a concerted theory-experiment comparison of how the lattice thermal conductivity kLat(T) depends on temperature and crystallite size. Comparing theory and experiment for a range of Hf0.5Zr0.5NiSn and ZrNiSn samples reported in the literature and i…
In order to predict InterGranular Stress Corrosion Cracking (IGSCC) of post-irradiated austenitic stainless steel in Light Water Reactor (LWR) environment, reliable predictions of intergranular stresses are required. Finite elements simulations have been performed on realistic polycrystalline aggregate with a recently proposed physically-based crystal plasticity constitutive equations validated for neutron-irradiated austenitic stainless steel. Intergranular normal stress probability density functions are found with respect to plastic strain and irradiation level, for uniaxial loading conditio…
The statistical-thermodynamic dislocation theory developed in previous papers is used here in an analysis of yielding transitions and grain-size effects in polycrystalline solids. Calculations are based on the 1995 experimental results of Meyers et al. for polycrystalline copper under strain-hardening conditions. The main assertion is that the well known Hall-Petch effects are caused by enhanced strengths of dislocation sources at the edges of grains instead of the commonly assumed resistance to dislocation flow across grain boundaries. The theory describes rapid transitions between elastic an…
