We construct the general renormalizable actions for the scalar field and the gauge field at a Lifshitz point characterized by the dynamical critical exponent $z$. The Lorentz invariance is broken down in the UV region, but is recovered in the IR limit. Even though the theories are UV complete, the speed of light is related to the momentum by $z(k/M)^{z-1}$ which can go to infinity in the UV limit for $z\geq 2$. Since the Lorentz invariance is broken down, the dispersion relation is modified and the time delays in Gamma-Ray bursts can be easily explained. In addition, we also discuss the thermal dynamics and the size of causal patch in a FRW universe for the field theory at a Lifshitz point.
We use the holographic duality to study quantum quenches of a strongly coupled CFT that drive the theory towards a non-relativistic fixed point with Lifshitz scaling. We consider the case of a Lifshitz dynamical exponent $z$ close to unity, where the non-relativistic field theory can be understood as a specific deformation of the corresponding CFT and, hence, the standard holographic dictionary can be applied. On the gravity side this amounts to finding a dynamical bulk solution which interpolates between AdS and Lishitz spacetimes as time evolves. We show that an asymptotically Lifshitz black…
We study classical scalar fields in asymptotically Lifshitz spacetimes. By evading Derrick's theorem requiring the scalar potential to explicitly depend on the background coordinates, we induce a diffeomorphism invariance breaking and settle a first-order formalism to find spatially localized solutions in the probe field limit. By inserting a backreaction equipped with a cosmological constant and a Maxwell term coupled to a dielectric function in the model, we find a Lifshitz black hole solution.
We construct supersymmetric Lifshitz field theories with four real supercharges in a general number of space dimensions. The theories consist of complex bosons and fermions and exhibit a holomorphic structure and non-renormalization properties of the superpotential. We study the theories in a diverse number of space dimensions and for various choices of marginal interactions. We show that there are lines of quantum critical points with an exact Lifshitz scale invariance and a dynamical critical exponent that depends on the coupling constants.
We show that in the Hořava-Lifshitz theory at the kinetic-conformal point, in the low energy regime, a wave zone for asymptotically flat fields can be consistently defined. In it, the physical degrees of freedom, the transverse traceless tensorial modes, satisfy a linear wave equation. The Newtonian contributions, among which there are terms which manifestly break the relativistic invariance, are non-trivial but do not obstruct the free propagation (radiation) of the physical degrees of freedom. For an appropriate value of the couplings of the theory, the wave equation becomes the relativistic…
The presence of isotropic Lifshitz points for a U(1) symmetric scalar theory is investigated with the help of the Functional Renormalization Group at the conjectured lower critical dimension d=4. To this aim, a suitable truncation in the expansion of the effective action in powers of the field is considered and, consequently, the Renormalization Group flow is reduced to a set of ordinary differential equations for the parameters that define the effective action. Within this approximation, indications of a line of Lifshitz points are found, that present evident similarities with the properties …
The presence of an isotropic tricritical Lifshitz point for the O(N) scalar theory is investigated in the 1/N expansion by means of the Functional Renormalization Group equations. At leading order, the non-trivial Lifshitz point is observed if the number of dimensions d is taken between d=4 and d=8, and the eigenvalue spectrum of the associated eigendirections is derived. At order 1/N, the anomalous dimension eta_N is computed and it is found to vanish both in d=4 and d=8, while it turns out to be positive between these two values, although strongly dependent on the choice of infrared regulato…
We study critical dynamics through time evolution of quantum field theories driven to a Lifshitz-like fixed point, with $z>1$, under relevant deformations. The deformations we consider are fast smooth quantum quenches, namely when the quench scale $δt^{-z}$ is large compared to the deformation scale. We show that in holographic models the response of the system merely depends on the scaling dimension of the quenched operator as $δλ\cdotδt^{d-2Δ+z-1}$, where $δλ$ is the deformation amplitude. This scaling behavior is enhanced logarithmically in certain cases. We also study free Lifshitz scalar …
In this paper we investigate the thermodynamic properties of the stationary Lifshitz black hole solution of New Massive Gravity. We study the thermodynamic stability from local and global point of view. We also consider the space of equilibrium states for the solution within the framework of Thermodynamic Information Geometry. By investigating the proper thermodynamic metrics and their curvature invariants we find a set of restrictions on the parameter space and the critical points indicating phase transitions of the system. We confirm our findings by analytical analysis of the geodesics on th…
Hořava gravity at a Lifshitz point is a theory intended to quantize gravity by using techniques of traditional quantum field theories. To avoid Ostrogradsky's ghosts, a problem that has been plaguing quantization of general relativity since the middle of 1970's, Hořava chose to break the Lorentz invariance by a Lifshitz-type of anisotropic scaling between space and time at the ultra-high energy, while recovering (approximately) the invariance at low energies. With the stringent observational constraints and self-consistency, it turns out that this is not an easy task, and various modifications…
The presence of isotropic Lifshitz points for a O(N)-symmetric scalar theory is investigated with the help of the Functional Renormalization Group. In particular, at the supposed lower critical dimension d=4, evidence for a continuous line of fixed points is found for the O(2) theory, and the observed structure presents clear similarities with the properties observed in the 2-dimensional Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless phase.
In this work, we investigate the existence of analytic solutions of static scalar fields on Lifshitz spacetimes. We evade Derrick's theorem on curved spacetimes by breaking general covariance and use first-order formalism to obtain solutions with finite energy related to the time-translational invariance of the background geometry along with the energy-momentum tensor of the model. We show that such solutions exist and are stable in systems where the Lifshitz background geometry is fixed and the self-interaction potential of the scalar field explicitly depends on the radial coordinate present …
We study the inhomogeneous solitonic modulation of a chiral condensate within the effective Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model when a constant external magnetic field is present. The self-consistent Pauli-Villars regularization scheme is adopted to manipulate the ultraviolet divergence encountered in the thermodynamic quantities. In order to determine the chiral restoration lines efficiently, a new kind of Ginzburg-Landau expansion approach is proposed here. At zero temperature, we find that both the upper and lower boundaries of the solitonic modulation oscillate with the magnetic field in the $μ$--$B…
