The quantum Lifshitz model provides an effective description of a quantum critical point. It has been shown that even though non--Lorentz invariant, the action admits a natural supersymmetrization. In this note we introduce a perturbative framework and show how the supersymmetric structure can be used to greatly simplify the Feynman rules and thus the study of the model.
In this paper, we consider non-perturbative quantum correction which appears as exponential term in the black hole entropy. We study consequence thermodynamics of the Hořava-Lifshitz black hole at quantum scales. We consider two cases of Kehagius-Sfetsos and Lu-Mei-Pop solutions and investigate black hole stability. We find that non-perturbative quantum correction yields to an instability at infinitesimal horizon radius of Kehagius-Sfetsos solution. On the other hand, non-perturbative quantum correction yields to the stability of Lu-Mei-Pop solution. Hence, we find that holographic dual of Lu-…
This work is dedicated to the study of both large-$N$ and perturbative quantum behaviors of Lifshitz nonlinear sigma models with dynamical critical exponent $z=2$ in 2+1 dimensions. We discuss renormalization and renormalization group aspects with emphasis on the possibility of emergence of Lorentz invariance at low energies. Contrarily to the perturbative expansion, where in general the Lorentz symmetry restoration is delicate and may depend on stringent fine-tuning, our results provide a more favorable scenario in the large-$N$ framework. We also consider supersymmetric extension in this non…
We revisit the theory of strongly correlated quantum matter perturbed by Harris-marginal random-field disorder, using the simplest holographic model. We argue that for weak disorder, the ground state of the theory is not Lifshitz invariant with a non-trivial disorder-dependent dynamical exponent, as previously found. Instead, below a non-perturbatively small energy scale, we predict infrared physics becomes independent of the disorder strength.
An exact renormalization equation (ERGE) accounting for an anisotropic scaling is derived. The critical and tricritical Lifshitz points are then studied at leading order of the derivative expansion which is shown to involve two differential equations. The resulting estimates of the Lifshitz critical exponents compare well with the $O(ε^{2}) $ calculations. In the case of the Lifshitz tricritical point, it is shown that a marginally relevant coupling defies the perturbative approach since it actually makes the fixed point referred to in the previous perturbative calculations $O(ε) $ finally uns…
We study a class of four-fermion Gross-Neveu like models in four dimensions with critical exponents $z=2$ and $z=3$. The models with $z=2$ are known to be perturbatively nonrenormalizable but are shown to be renormalizable in the context of the $1/N$ expansion. We calculate explicitly the effective potential for these models.
The large-n expansion is applied to the calculation of thermal critical exponents describing the critical behavior of spatially anisotropic d-dimensional systems at m-axial Lifshitz points. We derive the leading nontrivial 1/n correction for the perpendicular correlation-length exponent nu_{L2} and hence several related thermal exponents to order O(1/n). The results are consistent with known large-n expansions for d-dimensional critical points and isotropic Lifshitz points, as well as with the second-order epsilon expansion about the upper critical dimension d^*=4+m/2 for generic m\in[0,d]. An…
The critical behaviour of d-dimensional n-vector models at m-axial Lifshitz points is considered for general values of m in the large-n limit. It is proven that the recently obtained large-N expansions [J. Phys.: Condens. Matter 17, S1947 (2005)] of the correlation exponents η_{L2}, η_{L4} and the related anisotropy exponent θare fully consistent with the dimensionality expansions to second order in ε=4+m/2-d [Phys. Rev. B 62, 12338 (2000); Nucl. Phys. B 612, 340 (2001)] inasmuch as both expansions yield the same contributions of order ε^2/n.
We study the modifications induced by spacetime anisotropy on the Casimir effect in the case of two parallel plates. Nonperturbative and perturbative regimes are analyzed. In the first case the Casimir force either vanishes or it reverses its direction which, in any case, makes the proposal untenable. On the other hand, the perturbative model enables us to incorporate appropriately the effects of spacetime anisotropy.
A lattice regularization for the $2$d projectable Horava-Lifshitz (HL) quantum gravity is known to be the $2$d causal dynamical triangulations (CDT), and the $2$d CDT can be generalized so as to include all possible genus contributions non-perturbatively. We show that in the context of HL gravity, effects coming from such a non-perturbative sum over topologies can be successfully taken into account, if we quantize the $2$d projectable HL gravity with a simple bi-local wormhole interaction. This conference paper is based on the article, Phys. Lett. B 816 (2021), 136205.
We perform a fully nonlinear analysis of superhorizon perturbation in Hořava-Lifshitz gravity, based on the gradient expansion method. We present a concrete expression for the solution of gravity equations up to the second order in the gradient expansion, and prove that the solution can be extended to any order. The result provides yet another example for analogue of the Vainshtein effect: the nonlinear solution is regular in the limit $λ\to 1$ and recovers general relativity coupled to dark matter at low energy. Finally, we propose a definition of nonlinear curvature perturbation ${\cal R}$ i…
We show that the cosmological phase transition from the first accelerated expansion in the early universe to the second accelerated expansion over the intermediate decelerated expansion is possible in the HL gravity without the ``detailed balance'' condition if the dark scalar energy density is assumed to be negative. Moreover, we obtain various evolutions depending on the scale factor and the expansion rate. Finally, we discuss the existence of the minimum scale in connection with the singularity free condition.
The simplest gravity duals for quantum critical theories with z=2 `Lifshitz' scale invariance admit a marginally relevant deformation. Generic black holes in the bulk describe the field theory with a dynamically generated momentum scale Lambda as well as finite temperature T. We describe the thermodynamics of these black holes in the quantum critical regime where T >> Lambda^2. The deformation changes the asymptotics of the spacetime mildly and leads to intricate UV sensitivities of the theory which we control perturbatively in Lambda^2/T.
The large-n expansion is developed for the study of critical behaviour of d-dimensional systems at m-axial Lifshitz points with an arbitrary number m of modulation axes. The leading non-trivial contributions of O(1/n) are derived for the two independent correlation exponents η_{L2} and η_{L4}, and the related anisotropy index θ. The series coefficients of these 1/n corrections are given for general values of m and d with 0<m<d and 2+m/2<d<4+m/2 in the form of integrals. For special values of m and d such as (m,d)=(1,4), they can be computed analytically, but in general their evaluation require…
The behaviour of a d-dimensional vectorial N=3 model at a m-axial Lifshitz critical point is investigated by means of a nonperturbative renormalization group approach that is free of the huge technical difficulties that plague the perturbative approaches and limit their computations to the lowest orders. In particular being systematically improvable, our approach allows us to control the convergence of successive approximations and thus to get reliable physical quantities in d=3.
We investigate the effects of Lifshitz dynamical critical exponent z on a family of minimal D=4+1 holographic superconducting models, with a particular focus on magnetic phenomena. We see that it is possible to have a consistent Ginzburg-Landau approach to holographic superconductivity in a Lifshitz background. By following this phenomenological approach we are able to compute a wide array of physical quantities. We also calculate the Ginzburg-Landau parameter for different condensates, and conclude that in systems with higher dynamical critical exponent, vortex formation is more strongly unfa…
We use the Wetterich equation for foliated spacetimes to study the RG flow of projectable Horava-Lifshitz gravity coupled to n Lifshitz scalars. Using novel results for anisotropic heat kernels, the matter-induced beta functions for the gravitational couplings are computed explicitly. The RG flow exhibits an UV attractive anisotropic Gaussian fixed point where Newton's constant vanishes and the extra scalar mode decouples. This fixed point ensures that the theory is asymptotically free in the large-n expansion, indicating that projectable Horava-Lifshitz gravity is perturbatively renormalizabl…
Causal Dynamical Triangulations (CDT) is a non-perturbative quantisation of general relativity. Hořava-Lifshitz gravity on the other hand modifies general relativity to allow for perturbative quan- tisation. Past work has given rise to the speculation that Hořava-Lifshitz gravity might correspond to the continuum limit of CDT. In this paper we add another piece to this puzzle by applying the CDT quantisation prescription directly to Hořava-Lifshitz gravity in 2 dimensions. We derive the continuum Hamiltonian and we show that it matches exactly the Hamiltonian one derives from canonically quant…
A two-loop renormalization group analysis of the critical behaviour at an isotropic Lifshitz point is presented. Using dimensional regularization and minimal subtraction of poles, we obtain the expansions of the critical exponents $ν$ and $η$, the crossover exponent $ϕ$, as well as the (related) wave-vector exponent $β_q$, and the correction-to-scaling exponent $ω$ to second order in $ε_8=8-d$. These are compared with the authors' recent $ε$-expansion results [{\it Phys. Rev. B} {\bf 62} (2000) 12338; {\it Nucl. Phys. B} {\bf 612} (2001) 340] for the general case of an $m$-axial Lifshitz point…
The critical behavior of d-dimensional systems with an n-component order parameter is reconsidered at (m,d,n)-Lifshitz points, where a wave-vector instability occurs in an m-dimensional subspace of ${\mathbb R}^d$. Our aim is to sort out which ones of the previously published partly contradictory $ε$-expansion results to second order in $ε=4+\frac{m}{2}-d$ are correct. To this end, a field-theory calculation is performed directly in the position space of $d=4+\frac{m}{2}-ε$ dimensions, using dimensional regularization and minimal subtraction of ultraviolet poles. The residua of the dimensional…
We consider $CP^{N-1}$ models in $d+1$ dimensions around Lifshitz fixed points with dynamical critical exponent $z$, in the large-N expansion. It is shown that these models are asymptotically free and dynamically generate a mass for the $CP^{N-1}$ fields for all $d=z$. We demonstrate that, for $z=d=2$, the initially nondynamical gauge field acquires kinetic terms in a way similar to usual $CP^{N-1}$ models in 1+1 dimensions. Lorentz invariance emerges generically in the low-energy electrodynamics, with a nontrivial dielectric constant given by the inverse mass gap and a magnetic permeability w…
We present a fully nonlinear study of long wavelength cosmological perturbations within the framework of the projectable Horava-Lifshitz gravity, coupled to a single scalar field. Adopting the gradient expansion technique, we explicitly integrate the dynamical equations up to any order of the expansion, then restrict the integration constants by imposing the momentum constraint. While the gradient expansion relies on the long wavelength approximation, amplitudes of perturbations do not have to be small. When the $λ\to 1$ limit is taken, the obtained nonlinear solutions exhibit a continuous beh…
We evaluate the entanglement entropy of strips for boosted D3-black-branes compactified along the lightcone coordinate. The bulk theory describes $3$-dimensional $a = 3$ $θ = 1$, Lifshitz theory on the boundary. The area of small strips is evaluated perturbatively up to second order, where the leading term has a logarithmic dependence on strip width l, whereas entropy of the excitations is found to be proportional to $l^4$. The entanglement temperature falls off as $\frac{1}{l^3}$ on expected lines. The size of the subsystem has to be bigger than the typical Lifshitz scale in the theory. At se…
In this work we study a z=3 Horava-Lifshitz-like extension of QED in (3+1) dimensions. We calculate the one-loop radiative corrections to the two and three-point functions of the gauge and fermion fields. Such corrections were achieved using the perturbative approach and a dimensional regularization was performed only in the spatial sector. Renormalization was required to eliminate the divergent contributions emergent from the photon and electron self-energies and from the three-point function. We verify that the one-loop vertex functions satisfy the usual Ward identities and using renormaliza…
We study the divergent terms and the finite term in the expansion of the holographic entanglement entropy as the ultraviolet cutoff vanishes for smooth spatial regions having arbitrary shape, when the gravitational background is a four dimensional asymptotically Lifshitz spacetime with hyperscaling violation, in a certain range of the hyperscaling parameter. Both static and time dependent backgrounds are considered. For the coefficients of the divergent terms and for the finite term, analytic expressions valid for any smooth entangling curve are obtained. The analytic results for the finite te…
The Lifshitz critical behavior for a single component field theory is studied for the specific isotropic case in the framework of the Functional Renormalization Group. Lifshitz fixed point solutions of the flow equation, derived by using a Proper Time regulator, are searched at lowest and higher order in the derivative expansion. Solutions are found when the number of spatial dimensions d is contained within the interval 5.5 < d < 8.
The susceptibility amplitude ratio in the neighborhood of a uniaxial Lifshitz point is calculated at one-loop level using field-theoretic and $ε_{L}$-expansion methods. We use the Schwinger parametrization of the propagator in order to split the quadratic and quartic part of the momenta, as well as a new special symmetry point suitable for renormalization purposes. For a cubic lattice (d = 3), we find the result $\frac{C_{+}}{C_{-}} = 3.85$.
We consider the relationship between renormalizability and unitarity at a Lifshitz point in d dimensions. We test tree unitarity for theories containing only scalars and fermions, and for pure gauge theory. In both cases, we find the requirement of weighted power-counting renormalizability is equivalent to that of tree unitarity.
We consider a 3+1 dimensional field theory at a Lifshitz point for a dynamical critical exponent z=3, with a scalar and a fermion field coupled via a Yukawa interaction. Using the non-perturbative Schwinger-Dyson approach we calculate quantum corrections to the effective action. We demonstrate that a first order derivative kinetic term as well as a mass term for the fermion arise dynamically. This signals the restoration of Lorentz symmetry in the IR regime of the single fermion model, although for theories with more than one fermionic species such a conclusion will require fine-tuning of coup…

The origin of large-scale magnetic field in the universe is one of the greatest mysteries in modern cosmology. We present a new mechanism for generation of large-scale magnetic field, based on the power-counting renormalizable theory of gravitation recently proposed by Horava. Contrary to the usual case in general relativity, the U(1) gauge symmetry of a Maxwell action in this theory permits terms breaking conformal invariance in the ultraviolet. Moreover, for high frequency modes, the anisotropic scaling intrinsic to the theory inevitably makes the sound horizon far outside the Hubble horizon…
We present the critical exponents $ν_{L2}$, $η_{L2}$ and $γ_{L}$ for an $m$-axial Lifshitz point at second order in an $ε_{L}$ expansion. We introduced a constraint involving the loop momenta along the $m$-dimensional subspace in order to perform two- and three-loop integrals. The results are valid in the range $0 \leq m < d$. The case $m=0$ corresponds to the usual Ising-like critical behavior.
We solve a renormalized Wheeler-DeWitt equation for Einstein gravity in D+1 dimensions with D= odd in the strong coupling limit, which is expected to be suited to probe quantum geometry at short distances, in order to test Horava's idea that quantum gravity at short distances will be described by a nonrelativistic system with dynamical critical exponent z>1. Our results support the idea and show that the Wheeler-DeWitt equation possesses a solution associated with a z=2 Lifshitz point but no other z>2 solutions to leading order of the strong coupling expansion.
The critical exponents $ν_{L2}, η_{L2}$ and $γ_{L2}$ of a uniaxial Lifshitz point are calculated at two-loop level using renormalization group and $ε_{L}$-expansion techniques. We found a new constraint involving the loop momenta along the competition axis, which allows to solve the two-loop integrals. The exponent $γ_{L2}$ obtained using our method is in good agreement with numerical estimates based on Monte Carlo simulations.
The presence of an isotropic tricritical Lifshitz point for the O(N) scalar theory is investigated in the 1/N expansion by means of the Functional Renormalization Group equations. At leading order, the non-trivial Lifshitz point is observed if the number of dimensions d is taken between d=4 and d=8, and the eigenvalue spectrum of the associated eigendirections is derived. At order 1/N, the anomalous dimension eta_N is computed and it is found to vanish both in d=4 and d=8, while it turns out to be positive between these two values, although strongly dependent on the choice of infrared regulato…
In a previous paper (hep-th/0510080) the effective Landau-Lifshitz (LL) Lagrangians in the SU(2) sector coming from string theory and gauge theory have been found to three loops in the effective expansion parameter $\tildeλ=λ/J^2$. In this paper we continue this study and find the effective Landau-Lifshitz Lagrangians to four loops. We extend to four-loops $\tildeλ^4$ the computations of 1/J and $1/J^2$ corrections to BMN energies done in hep-th/0510080 to three-loops. We compare these corrections obtained from quantum ``gauge-theory'' LL action with the corrections obtained from the conjectur…
The presence of isotropic Lifshitz points for a U(1) symmetric scalar theory is investigated with the help of the Functional Renormalization Group at the conjectured lower critical dimension d=4. To this aim, a suitable truncation in the expansion of the effective action in powers of the field is considered and, consequently, the Renormalization Group flow is reduced to a set of ordinary differential equations for the parameters that define the effective action. Within this approximation, indications of a line of Lifshitz points are found, that present evident similarities with the properties …
We determine the specific heat amplitude ratio near a $m$-axial Lifshitz point and show its universal character. Using a recent renormalization group picture along with new field-theoretical $ε_{L}$-expansion techniques, we established this amplitude ratio at one-loop order. We estimate the numerical value of this amplitude ratio for $m=1$ and $d=3$. The result is in very good agreement with its experimental measurement on the magnetic material $MnP$. It is shown that in the limit $m \to 0$ it trivially reduces to the Ising-like amplitude ratio.
A complete perturbative expansion for the Hamiltonian describing the motion of a quantomechanical system constrained to move on an arbitrary submanifold of its configuration space $R^n$ is obtained.
We establish the equivalence between the continuum limit of the quantum spherical model with competing interactions, which is relevant to the investigation of Lifshitz points, and the O(N) nonlinear sigma model with the addition of higher order spatial derivative operators, which breaks the Lorentz symmetry and is known as Lifshitz-type (or anisotropic) nonlinear sigma model. In the context of the 1/N expansion, we also discuss the renormalization properties of this nonlinear sigma model and find the nontrivial fixed points of the beta-functions in various dimensions, which turn out to be conn…
Recently, Hořava has proposed a renormalizable theory of gravity with critical exponent z=3 in the UV. This proposal might imply the scale invariant primordial perturbation can be generated in any expansion of early universe with a\sim t^n and n>1/3, which, in this note, will be validated by solving the motion equation of perturbation mode on super sound horizon scale for any background evolution of early universe. However, it is found that it seems that if we require the efolding number of primordial perturbation is suitable for observable universe, n>1 still need to be satisfied, unless the …
In this work the generation of generalized Chern-Simons terms in three dimensional quantum electrodynamics with high spatial derivatives is studied. We analyze the self-energy corrections to the gauge field propagator by considering an expansion of the amplitude up to third order in the external momenta. The divergences of the corrections are determined and explicit forms for the Chern-Simons terms with high derivatives are obtained. Some unusual aspects of the calculation are stressed and the existence of a smooth isotropic limit is proved. The transversality of the anisotropic gauge propagat…
The functional renormalization group equation for projectable Hořava-Lifshitz gravity is used to derive the non-perturbative beta functions for the Newton's constant, cosmological constant and anisotropy parameter. The resulting coupled differential equations are studied in detail and exemplary RG trajectories are constructed numerically. The beta functions possess a non-Gaussian fixed point and a one-parameter family of Gaussian fixed points. One of the Gaussian fixed points corresponds to the Einstein-Hilbert action with vanishing cosmological constant and constitutes a saddle point with one…
The study of the convergence of power series expansions of energy eigenvalues for anharmonic oscillators in quantum mechanics differs from general understanding, in the case of quasi-exactly solvable potentials. They provide examples of expansions with finite radius and suggest techniques useful to analyze more generic potentials.
We present the Callan-Symanzik-Lifshitz method to approaching the critical behaviors of systems with arbitrary competing interactions. Every distinct competition subspace in the anisotropic cases define an independent set of renormalized vertex parts via normalization conditions with nonvanishing distinct masses at zero external momenta. Otherwise, only one mass scale is required in the isotropic behaviors. At the critical dimension, we prove: i) the existence of the Callan-Symanzik-Lifshitz equations and ii) the multiplicative renormalizability of the vertex functions using the inductive meth…
We consider a new perturbation scheme in nonabelian gauge theory. Pure Yang-Mills theory in three dimensions is taken as a concrete example. The zeroth-order in the perturbative expansion is given by BF theory coupled to a St{\" u}ckelberg-like field. The effective coupling for the expansion can be small in the infrared regime, which implies that nonperturbative treatment of Yang-Mills theory may be partially reduced to that of BF theory.
Based on the renormalizable theory of gravitation recently proposed by Horava, we present a simple scenario to generate almost scale-invariant, super-horizon curvature perturbations. The anisotropic scaling with dynamical critical exponent z=3 implies that the amplitude of quantum fluctuations of a free scalar field generated in the early epoch of the expanding universe is insensitive to the Hubble expansion rate and, thus, scale-invariant. Those fluctuations are later converted to curvature perturbations by the curvaton mechanism or/and the modulated decay of heavy particles/oscillating field…
We develop a systematic method of the perturbative expansion around the Gaussian effective action based on the background field method. We show, by applying the method to the quantum mechanical anharmonic oscillator problem, that even the first non-trivial correction terms greatly improve the Gaussian approximation.
The supersymmetric sinh-Gordon model on a half-line with integrable boundary conditions is considered perturbatively to verify conjectured exact reflection factors to one loop order. Propagators for the boson and fermion fields restricted to a half-line contain several novel features and are developed as prerequisites for the calculations.
We address the vDVZ discontinuity of the 5D DGP model which consists of a 3-brane residing in a flat, infinite-volume bulk. Following a suggestion by Gabadadze [hep-th/0403161], we implement a constrained perturbative expansion parametrized by brane gauge parameters. We explore the parameter space and show that the DGP solution exhibiting the vDVZ discontinuity corresponds to a set of measure zero.
We have extended the perturbative expansion method around the Gaussian effective action to the fermionic field theory, by taking the 2-dimensional Gross-Neveu model as an example. We have computed both the zero temperature and the finite temperature effective potentials of the Gross-Neveu model up to the first perturbative correction terms, and have found that the critical temperature, at which dynamically broken symmetry is restored, is significantly improved for small value of the flavour number.
We calculate quantum averages of Wilson loops (holonomies) in gauge theories on the Euclidean noncommutative plane, using a path-integral representation of the star-product. We show how the perturbative expansion emerges from a concise general formula and demonstrate its anomalous behavior at large parameter of noncommutativity for the simplest nonplanar diagram of genus 1. We discuss various UV/IR regularizations of the two-dimensional noncommutative gauge theory in the axial gauge and, using the noncommutative loop equation, construct a consistent regularization.
We evaluate a one-loop, two-point, massless Feynman integral $I_{D,m}(p,q)$ relevant for perturbative field theoretic calculations in strongly anisotropic $d=D+m$ dimensional spaces given by the direct sum $\mathbb R^D\oplus\mathbb R^m$. Our results are valid in the whole convergence region of the integral for generic (non-integer) co-dimensions $D$ and $m$. We obtain series expansions of $I_{D,m}(p,q)$ in terms of powers of the variable $X:=4p^2/q^4$, where $p=|\bm p|$, $q=|\bm q|$, $\bm p\in\mathbb R^D$, $\bm q\in\mathbb R^m$, and in terms of generalised hypergeometric functions $_3F_2(-X)$,…
We show that the recent renormalization-group analysis of Lifshitz critical behavior presented by Leite [Phys. Rev. B {\bf 67}, 104415 (2003)] suffers from a number of severe deficiencies. In particular, we show that his approach does not give an ultraviolet finite renormalized theory, is plagued by inconsistencies, misses the existence of a nontrivial anisotropy exponent $θ\ne 1/2$, and therefore yields incorrect hyperscaling relations. His $ε$-expansion results to order $ε^2$ for the critical exponents of $m$-axial Lifshitz points are incorrect both in the anisotropic ($0<m<d$) and the isotr…
We derive a perturbative expansion for space time entanglement entropy in string theory by comparing replica trick constructions on the target space and on the worldsheet. Requiring the two approaches to match implies a set of constrains on the amplitudes involved and produces a non-trivial relation among target space and world sheet entanglement. We will be mainly interested in bosonic string on a flat background but also discuss the superstring generalization.
An alternative perturbative expansion in quantum mechanics which allows a full expression of the scaling arbitrariness is introduced. This expansion is examined in the case of the anharmonic oscillator and is conveniently resummed using a method which consists in introducing an energy cut-off that is carefully removed as the order of the expansion is increased. We illustrate this technique numerically by computing the asymptotic behavior of the ground state energy of the anharmonic oscillator for large couplings, and show how the exploitation of the scaling arbitrariness substantially improves…
In this work we investigate the critical behavior of physical systems with competing interactions that present points Lifshitz m-axial. For this study we used the techniques of Quantum Field Theory with Massive Scalar interactions of type λϕ^4 in order to obtain a perturbative expansion for the two-point vertex part up to the 3-loop order and four-point vertex function up to 2-loop level. These vertex functions were regularized using the method of dimensional regularization and renormalized using the minimal subtraction of dimensional poles method. In particular, counterterms have been added to…
We show how to construct path integrals for quantum mechanical systems where the space of configurations is a general non-compact symmetric space. Associated with this path integral is a perturbation theory which respects the global structure of the system. This perturbation expansion is evaluated for a simple example and leads to a new exactly soluble model. This work is a step towards the construction of a strong coupling perturbation theory for quantum gravity.
We study a version of the recently proposed modified $F(R)$ Hořava-Lifshitz gravity that abandons the projectability condition of the lapse variable. We discovered that the projectable version of this theory has a consistent Hamiltonian structure, and that the theory has interesting cosmological solutions which can describe the eras of accelerated expansion of the universe in a unified manner. The usual Hořava-Lifshitz gravity is a special case of our theory. Hamiltonian analysis of the non-projectable theory, however, shows that this theory has serious problems. These problems are compared wi…
