The dressed-electron eigenstate of Feynman-gauge QED is computed in light-front quantization with a Fock-space truncation to include at most the one-photon/one-electron sector. The theory is regulated by the inclusion of three massive Pauli-Villars (PV) particles, one PV electron and two PV photons. In particular, the chiral limit is investigated, and the correct limit is found to require two PV photons, not just one as previously thought. The renormalization and covariance of the electron current are also analyzed. We find that the plus component is well behaved and use its spin-flip matrix element to compute the electron's anomalous moment. The dependence of the moment on the regulator masses is shown to be slowly varying when the second PV photon is used to guarantee the correct chiral limit.
We investigate regularization of scalar one-loop integrals in the Pauli- Villars subtraction scheme. The results depend on the number of sub- tractions, in particular the finite terms that survive after the diver- gences have been absorbed by renormalization. Therefore the process of Pauli-Villars regularization is ambiguous. We discuss how these am- biguities may be resolved by applying an asymptotically large number of subtractions, which results in a regularization that is automatically valid in any number of dimensions.
Pauli-Villars regularization is successfully applied to nonperturbative calculations in a (3+1)-dimensional light-cone model. Numerical results obtained with discretized light-cone quantization compare favorably with the analytic solution.
The techniques of Pauli-Villars regularization and discrete light-cone quantization are combined to analyze Yukawa theory in a single-fermion truncation. A special form of the Lanczos algorithm is constructed for diagonalization of the indefinite-metric light-cone Hamiltonian.
The Pauli-Villars regularization scheme is often used for evaluating parton distributions within the framework of the chiral quark soliton model with inclusion of the vacuum polarization effects. Its simplest version with a single subtraction term should however be taken with some caution, since it does not fully get rid of divergences contained in scalar and psuedoscalar quark densities appearing in the soliton equation of motion. To remedy this shortcoming, we propose here its natural extention, i.e. the Pauli-Villars regularization scheme with multi-subtraction terms. We also carry out a co…
We apply Pauli-Villars regularization and discrete light-cone quantization to the nonperturbative solution of a (3+1)-dimensional model field theory. The matrix eigenvalue problem is solved for the lowest-mass state with use of the complex symmetric Lanczos algorithm. This permits the calculation of each Fock-sector wave function, and from these we obtain values for various quantities, such as average multiplicities and average momenta of constituents, structure functions, and a form factor slope.
Calculations in a (3+1)-dimensional model indicate that Pauli-Villars regularization can be combined with discrete light-cone quantization (DLCQ) to solve at least some field theories nonperturbatively. Discrete momentum states of Pauli-Villars particles are included in the Fock basis to automatically generate needed counterterms; the resultant increase in basis size is found acceptable. The Lanczos algorithm is used to extract the lowest massive eigenstate and eigenvalue of the light-cone Hamiltonian, with basis sizes ranging up to 10.5 million. Each Fock-sector wave function is computed in t…
We apply Pauli-Villars regularization and discretized light-cone quantization to the nonperturbative solution of (3+1)-dimensional Yukawa theory in a single-fermion truncation. Three heavy scalars, including two with negative norm, are used to regulate the theory. The matrix eigenvalue problem is solved for the lowest-mass state with use of a new, indefinite-metric Lanczos algorithm. Various observables are extracted from the wave functions, including average multiplicities and average momenta of constituents, structure functions, and a form factor slope.
We apply light-front quantization, Pauli-Villars regularization, and numerical techniques to the nonperturbative solution of the dressed-fermion problem in Yukawa theory in 3+1 dimensions. The solution is developed as a Fock-state expansion truncated to include at most one fermion and two bosons. The basis includes a negative-metric heavy boson and a negative-metric heavy fermion in order to provide the necessary cancellations of ultraviolet divergences. The integral equations for the Fock-state wave functions are solved by reducing them to effective one-boson--one-fermion equations for eigens…
Four-dimensional quantum field theories generally require regularization to be well defined. This can be done in various ways, but here we focus on Pauli--Villars (PV) regularization and apply it to nonperturbative calculations of bound states. The philosophy is to introduce enough PV fields to the Lagrangian to regulate the theory perturbatively, including preservation of symmetries, and assume that this is sufficient for the nonperturbative case. The numerical methods usually necessary for nonperturbative bound-state problems are then applied to a finite theory that has the original symmetri…
A procedure for Pauli-Villars regularization of locally and globally supersymmetric theories is described. Implications for specific theories, especially those obtained from superstrings, are discussed with emphasis on the role of field theory anomalies.
It is shown that the one-loop ultraviolet divergences in renormalizable supersymmetric theories can be regulated by the introduction of heavy Pauli-Villars chiral supermultiplets, provided the generators of the gauge group are traceless in the matter representation. The procedure is extended to include supersymmetric gauged nonlinear sigma models.
We obtain analytic, nonperturbative, approximate solutions of Yukawa theory in the one-fermion sector using light-front quantization. The theory is regulated in the ultraviolet by the introduction of heavy Pauli-Villars scalar and fermion fields, each with negative norm. In order to obtain a directly soluble problem, fermion-pair creation and annihilation are neglected, and the number of bosonic constituents is limited to one of either type. We discuss some of the features of the wave function of the eigensolution, including its endpoint behavior and spin and orbital angular momentum content. …
We continue the development of a nonperturbative light-front Hamiltonian method for the solution of quantum field theories by considering the one-photon eigenstate of Lorentz-gauge QED. The photon state is computed nonperturbatively for a Fock basis with a bare photon state and electron-positron pair states. The calculation is regulated by the inclusion of Pauli-Villars (PV) fermions, with one flavor to make the integrals finite and a second flavor to guarantee a zero mass for the physical photon eigenstate. We compute in detail the constraints on the PV coupling strengths that this zero mass …
We regularize QCD using the combination of higher covariant derivatives and Pauli-Villars determinants proposed by Slavnov. It is known that for pure Yang-Mills theory the Pauli-Villars determinants generate unphysical logarithmic radiative corrections at one loop that modify the beta function. Here we prove that when the gauge fields are coupled to fermions so that one has QCD, these unphysical corrections translate into a violation of unitarity. We provide an understanding of this by seeing that Slavnov's choice for the Pauli-Villars determinants introduces extra propagating degrees of freed…
We show how the recently proposed Taylor-Lagrange renormalization scheme can lead to extensions of singular distributions which are reminiscent of the Pauli-Villars subtraction. However, at variance with the Pauli-Villars regularization scheme, no infinite mass limit is performed in this scheme. As an illustration of this mechanism, we consider the calculation of the self-energy in second order perturbation theory in the Yukawa model, within the covariant formulation of light-front dynamics. We show in particular how rotational invariance is preserved in this scheme.
We extend the idea of the generalized Pauli-Villars regularization of Frolov and Slavnov and analyze the general structure of the regularization scheme. The gauge anomaly-free condition emerges in a simple way in the scheme, and, under the standard prescription for the momentum assignment, the Pauli-Villars Lagrangian provides a gauge invariant regularization of chiral fermions in arbitrary anomaly-free representations. The vacuum polarization tensor is transverse, and the fermion number and the conformal anomalies have gauge invariant forms. We also point out that the real representation can …
We consider quantum electrodynamics quantized on the light front in Feynman gauge and regulated in the ultraviolet by the inclusion of massive, negative-metric Pauli--Villars (PV) particles in the Lagrangian. The eigenstate of the electron is approximated by a Fock-state expansion truncated to include one photon. The Fock-state wave functions are computed from the fundamental Hamiltonian eigenvalue problem and used to calculate the anomalous magnetic moment, as a point of comparison. Two approaches are considered: a sector-dependent parameterization, where the bare parameters of the Lagrangian…
We present a new class of quantum field theories which are exactly solvable. The theories are generated by introducing Pauli-Villars fermionic and bosonic fields with masses degenerate with the physical positive metric fields. An algorithm is given to compute the spectrum and corresponding eigensolutions. We also give the operator solution for a particular case and use it to illustrate some of the tenets of light-cone quantization. Since the solutions of the solvable theory contain ghost quanta, these theories are unphysical. However, we also discuss how perturbation theory in the difference b…
It is shown that the one-loop coefficients of on-shell operators of standard supergravity with canonical gauge kinetic energy can be regulated by the introduction of Pauli-Villars chiral and abelian gauge multiplets, subject to a condition on the matter representations of the gauge group. Aspects of the anomaly structure of these theories under global nonlinear symmetries and an anomalous gauge symmetry are discussed.
When the path integral method of anomaly evaluation is applied to chiral gauge theories, two different types of gauge anomaly, i.e., the consistent form and the covariant form, appear depending on the regularization scheme for the Jacobian factor. We clarify the relation between the regularization scheme and the Pauli--Villars--Gupta (PVG) type Lagrangian level regularization. The conventional PVG, being non-gauge invariant for chiral gauge theories, in general corresponds to the consistent regularization scheme. The covariant regularization scheme, on the other hand, is realized by the genera…
We compute the beta function at one loop for Yang-Mills theory using as regulator the combination of higher covariant derivatives and Pauli-Villars determinants proposed by Faddeev and Slavnov. This regularization prescription has the appealing feature that it is manifestly gauge invariant and essentially four-dimensional. It happens however that the one-loop coefficient in the beta function that it yields is not $-11/3,$ as it should be, but $-23/6.$ The difference is due to unphysical logarithmic radiative corrections generated by the Pauli-Villars determinants on which the regularization me…
We review the history of the ghost problem in quantum field theory from the Pauli-Villars regulator theory to currently popular fourth-order derivative quantum gravity theories. While these theories all appear to have unitarity-violating ghost states with negative norm, we show that in fact these ghost states only appear because the theories are being formulated in the wrong Hilbert space. In these theories the Hamiltonians are not Hermitian but instead possess an antilinear symmetry. Consequently, one cannot use inner products that are built out of states and their Hermitian conjugates. Rathe…

We reconsider the Lee-Wick (LW) models and compare their properties to the properties of the models that contain purely virtual particles. We argue against the LW premise that unstable particles can be removed from the sets of incoming and outgoing states in scattering processes. The removal leads to a non-Hermitian classical limit, besides clashing with the observation of the muon. If, on the other hand, all the states are included, the LW models have a Hamiltonian unbounded from below or negative norms. Purely virtual particles, on the contrary, lead to a Hermitian classical limit and are ab…
We show that regularization of gauge theories by higher covariant derivatives and gauge invariant Pauli-Villars regulators is a consistent method if the Pauli-Villars vector fields are considered in a covariant in the regulating Pauli-Villars fields is pathological and the original Slavnov proposal in covariant Landau gauge is not correct because of the appearance of massless modes in the regulators which do not decouple when the ultraviolet regulator is removed. In such a case the method does not correspond to the regularization of a pure gauge theory but that of a gauge theory in interaction…
Two methods for the nonperturbative solution of field-theoretic bound-state problems, based on light-front coordinates, are briefly reviewed. One uses Pauli-Villars regularization and the other supersymmetry. Applications to Yukawa theory and super Yang-Mills theory with fundamental matter are emphasized.
Within the Pauli-Villars regularization technique the fermion propagator is studied in the framework of Schwinger-Dyson equations in the Euclidean space. Making the generalization of Fukuda and Kugo proposals, the analytical continuation is performed into the timelike region of fourmomenta. The massive gauge boson kernel is considered and the fermion propagator pole structure is discussed in detail.
Applications of discretized light-cone quantization (DLCQ) to (3+1)-dimensional Yukawa theory with Pauli-Villars regulators and of supersymmetric DLCQ (SDLCQ) to (2+1)-dimensional super Yang-Mills theory are discussed. The ability of these methods to provide wave functions as well as spectra is emphasized.
Pauli-Villars regularization of Yang-Mills theories and of supergravity theories is outlined, with an emphasis on BRST invariance. Applications to phenomenology and the anomaly structure of supergravity are discussed.
We study the electroweak properties of pseudo-scalar mesons in the light and heavy-light sectors. In particular, we address the electromagnetic form factors and decay constants of the pion, kaon and D mesons. The structure of composite systems are given by the Bethe-Salpeter (BS) amplitude of a meson formed by a confined pair of constituent quark and antiquark, which in our work is written in terms of Pauli-Villars regulators. The analytical structure contains single poles in the complex momentum space. The BS amplitude takes into account poles due to the regulator parameters, while the quark-…
In principle, the complete spectrum and bound-state wave functions of a quantum field theory can be determined by finding the eigenvalues and eigensolutions of its light-cone Hamiltonian. One of the challenges in obtaining nonperturbative solutions for gauge theories such as QCD using light-cone Hamiltonian methods is to renormalize the theory while preserving Lorentz symmetries and gauge invariance. For example, the truncation of the light-cone Fock space leads to uncompensated ultraviolet divergences. We present two methods for consistently regularizing light-cone-quantized gauge theories in…
Two approaches to nonperturbative renormalization are discussed for theories quantized on the light cone. One is tailored specifically to a calculation of the dressed-electron state in quantum electrodynamics, where an invariant-mass cutoff is used as a regulator and a Tamm-Dancoff truncation is made to include no more than two photons. The other approach is based on Pauli-Villars regulators and is applied to Yukawa theory and a related soluble model. In both cases discretized light-cone quantization is used to obtain a finite matrix problem that can be solved nonperturbatively.
The meson static properties are investigated in Pauli-Villars regularized Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model in strong magnetic field. The quark dimension reduction leads to not only the magnetic catalysis effect on chiral symmetry restoration but also a sudden jump of the mass of the Goldstone mode at the Mott transition temperature.
The methods of light-front quantization and Pauli-Villars regularization are applied to a nonperturbative calculation of the dressed-electron state in quantum electrodynamics. This is intended as a test of the methods in a gauge theory, as a precursor to possible methods for the nonperturbative solution of quantum chromodynamics. The electron state is truncated to include at most two photons and no positrons in the Fock basis, and the wave functions of the dressed state are used to compute the electrons's anomalous magnetic moment. A choice of regularization that preserves the chiral symmetry …
This work is the first check of gauge invariance for nonperturbative calculations in light-front QED. To quantize QED in an arbitrary covariant gauge, we use a light-front analog of the equal-time Stueckelberg quantization. Combined with a Pauli-Villars regularization, where massive, negative-metric photons and fermions are included in the Lagrangian, we are then able to construct the light-front QED Hamiltonian and the associated mass eigenvalue problem in a Fock-space representation. The formalism is applied to the dressed-electron state, with a Fock-space truncation to include at most one p…
In light-front dynamics, the regularization of amplitudes by traditional cutoffs imposed on the transverse and longitudinal components of particle momenta corresponds to restricting the integration volume by a non-rotationally invariant domain. The result depends not only on the size of this domain (i.e., on the cutoff values), but also on its orientation determined by the position of the light-front plane. Explicitly covariant formulation of light front dynamics allows us to parameterize the latter dependence in a very transparent form. If we decompose the regularized amplitude in terms of in…
Generalized vector form factors of the pion, related to the moments of the generalized parton distribution functions, are evaluated in the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model with the Pauli-Villars regularization. The lowest moments (the electromagnetic and the gravitational form factors) are compared to recent lattice data, with fair agreement. Predictions for higher-order moments are also made. Relevant features of the generalized form factors in the chiral quark models are highlighted and the role of the QCD evolution for the higher-order GFFs is stressed.
Following our recenty proposed self-consistent mean-field approximation approach, we have done some researches on the chiral phase transition of strong interaction matter within the framework of Nambu-Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model. The chiral susceptibility and equation of state (EOS) are computed in this work for both two-flavor and three-flavor quark matter for contrast. The Pauli-Villars scheme, which can preserve gauge invariance, is used in this paper. Moreover, whether the three-flavor quark matter is more stable than the two-flavor quark matter or not in quark stars is discussed in this work…
We show that two recent independent proposals for regularizing a chiral gauge theory stem from one common trick. If the anomaly free complex representation carried by the right handed fermi--fields is $r$ one constructs a vector like theory with flavored right handed fermionic matter in $r+\bar r$ but with a mass matrix of the order of the cutoff and having an index equal to unity in an infinite dimensional flavor space. We present a Pauli--Villars realization of the trick that is likely to work to all orders in perturbation theory and a lattice version which is argued to produce the correct c…
We perform a systematic study on the spin decomposition of an electron in QED at one-loop order. It is found that the electron orbital angular momentum defined in Jaffe-Manohar and Ji spin sum rules agrees with each other, and the so-called potential angular momentum vanishes at this order. The calculations are performed in both dimensional regularization and Pauli-Villars regularization for the ultraviolet divergences, and they lead to consistent results. We further investigate the calculations in terms of light-front wave functions, and find a missing contribution from the instantaneous inte…
