The quantum system of particles in a double well potential is a widely studied and extremely useful example for understanding quantum mechanics. This simple system has recently been used in theoretical proposals and related experiments as a way to make quantum logic gates for ultra-cold atoms confined in optical lattices (periodic potentials arising from the interaction of atoms with standing waves of laser light). Such quantum gates are the fundamental building blocks for quantum information processing; in this context the regular array of cold atoms in the optical lattice serves as the quantum register. The purpose of this paper is to explain how this current research can be understood in terms of well-known principles for systems of identical particles, and hence furnish an up-to-date example for the teaching of quantum mechanics.

Double Gated Single Molecular Transistor for Charge Detection
High-performance two-qubit gates have been reported with superconducting qubits coupled via a single-transmon coupler (STC). Most of them are implemented for qubits with a small detuning since reducing residual $ZZ$ coupling for highly detuned qubits by an STC is challenging. In terms of the frequency crowding and crosstalk, however, highly detuned qubits are desirable. Here, we numerically demonstrate a high-performance parametric gate for highly detuned fixed-frequency qubits using a recently proposed tunable coupler called a double-transmon coupler (DTC). Applying an ac flux pulse, we can p…
The article proposes the implementation of a universal system of quantum gates on asynchronous excitations of two-level atoms in optical cavities. The entangling operator of the CSign type is implemented without beam splitters, approximately, based on the incommensurability of the periods of Rabi oscillations in a cavity with single and double excitations.
Hole spins confined in semiconductor quantum dot systems have gained considerable interest for their strong spin-orbit interactions (SOIs) and relatively weak hyperfine interactions. Here we experimentally demonstrate a tunable SOI in a double quantum dot in a Germanium (Ge) hut wire (HW), which could help enable fast all-electric spin manipulations while suppressing unwanted decoherence. Specifically, we measure the transport spectra in the Pauli spin blockade regime in the double quantum dot device.By adjusting the interdot tunnel coupling, we obtain an electric field tuned spin-orbit length…
Although two-qubit entangling gates are necessary for universal quantum computing, they are notoriously difficult to implement with high fidelity. Recently, tunable couplers have become a key component for realizing high-fidelity two-qubit gates in superconducting quantum computers. However, it is still difficult to achieve tunable coupling free of unwanted residual coupling for highly detuned qubits, which are desirable for mitigating qubit-frequency crowding or errors due to crosstalk between qubits. We thus propose a design for this kind of tunable coupler, which we call a double-transmon c…
Conventional quantum transport methods can provide quantitative information on spin, orbital, and valley states in quantum dots, but often lack spatial resolution. Scanning tunneling microscopy, on the other hand, provides exquisite spatial resolution of the local electronic density of states, but often at the expense of speed. Working to combine the spatial resolution and energy sensitivity of scanning probe microscopy with the speed of microwave measurements, we couple a metallic probe tip to a Si/SiGe double quantum dot that is integrated with a local charge detector. We first demonstrate t…

Quantum compiling aims to construct a quantum circuit V by quantum gates drawn from a native gate alphabet, which is functionally equivalent to the target unitary U. It is a crucial stage for the running of quantum algorithms on noisy intermediate-scale quantum (NISQ) devices. However, the space for structure exploration of quantum circuit is enormous, resulting in the requirement of human expertise, hundreds of experimentations or modifications from existing quantum circuits. In this paper, we propose a variational quantum compiling (VQC) algorithm based on reinforcement learning (RL), in ord…
A critical element towards the realization of scalable quantum processors is non-local coupling between nodes. Scaling connectivity beyond nearest-neighbor interactions requires the implementation of a mediating interaction often termed a 'quantum bus'. Cavity photons have long been used as a bus by the superconducting qubit community, but it has only recently been demonstrated that spin-based qubits in double quantum dot architectures can reach the strong coupling regime and exhibit spin-spin interactions via the exchange of real or virtual photons. Two-qubit gate operations are predicted in …
Scaling up spin qubit systems requires high-fidelity single-qubit and two-qubit gates. Gate fidelities exceeding $98\%$ were already demonstrated in silicon based single and double quantum dots, whereas for the realization of larger qubit arrays crosstalk effects on neighboring qubits must be taken into account. We analyze qubit fidelities impacted by crosstalk when performing single-qubit and two-qubit operations on neighbor qubits with a simple Heisenberg model. Furthermore we propose conditions for driving fields to robustly synchronize Rabi oscillations and avoid crosstalk effects. In our …
