Monopole operators in Abelian N=4 Chern-Simons theories described by circular quiver diagrams are investigated. The magnetic charges of non-diagonal U(1) gauge symmetries form the SU(p)xSU(q) root lattice where p and q are numbers of untwisted and twisted hypermultiplets, respectively. For monopole operators corresponding to the root vectors, we propose a correspondence between the monopole operators and states of a wrapped M2-brane in the dual geometry.
We study the four dimensional effective action of a system of D6-branes wrapped on the K3 manifold times a torus, allowing the volume of the internal manifolds to remain dynamical. An unwrapped brane is at best a Dirac monopole of the dual R-R sector field to which it couples. After wrapping, a brane is expected to behave as a BPS monopole, where the Higgs vacuum expectation value is set by the size of the K3. We determine the moduli space of an arbitrary number of these wrapped branes by introducing a time dependent perturbation of the static solution, and expanding the supergravity equations…
We study three-dimensional superconformal field theories on wrapped M5-branes. Applying the gauge/gravity duality and the recently proposed 3d-3d relation, we deduce quantitative predictions for the perturbative free energy of a Chern-Simons theory on hyperbolic 3-space. Remarkably, the perturbative expansion is expected to terminate at two-loops in the large N limit. We check the correspondence numerically in a number of examples, and confirm the N^3 scaling with precise coefficients.
We study the quantum moduli space of N=2 Chern-Simons quivers with generic ranks and CS levels, proving along the way exact formulas for the charges of bare monopole operators. We then derive N=2 Chern-Simons quiver theories dual to AdS_4 x Y^{p,q}(CP2) M-theory backgrounds, for the whole family of Sasaki-Einstein seven-manifolds and for any value of the torsion G_4 flux. The derivation of the gauge theories relies on the reduction to type IIA string theory, in which M2-branes become D2-branes while the conical geometry maps to RR flux and D6-branes wrapped on compact four-cycles. M5-branes on…
We investigate a class of N=4 quiver Chern-Simons theories and their gravity duals. We define the group of fractional D3-brane charges in a type IIB brane setup with taking account of D3-brane creation due to Hanany-Witten effect, and confirm that it agrees with the 3-cycle homology of the dual geometry, which describes the charges of fractional M2-branes, M5-branes wrapped on 3-cycles. The relation between the fractional brane charge and the torsion of the three-form potential field is partially established. We also discuss the duality between baryonic operators in the Chern-Simons theories a…
We study extremal and non-extremal generalizations of the regular non-abelian solution found by Chamseddine and Volkov in 5d N=4 gauged supergravity, which has been shown by Maldacena and Nastase to describe a system of NS5-branes wrapping an three-sphere dual to three-dimensional U(N) N=1 supersymmetric Yang-Mills with Chern-Simons coupling k=N/2. All black hole solutions have a temperature larger than the Hagedorn temperature Tc of the little string theory and their entropy decreases as the temperature increases. This is a sign that the system is thermodynamically unstable above Tc. We have …
We construct classical solutions for magnetic monopole operators in N=6 superconformal Chern-Simons-matter theories. In particular, we explicitly find solutions with unequal magnetic flux contents in the two U(N) gauge groups, whose existence has been known only indirectly. We also study the ground state degeneracies of the U(2) x U(2) monopoles by quantizing the moduli of the solution.
We investigate the zero modes of the Kaluza-Klein monopole in M-theory and show that the Born-Infeld action and the Chern-Simons term of a D6-brane are reproduced to quadratic order in the field strength of the U(1) field on the brane.
We study local operators of U(N)xU(N) N=6 Chern-Simons-matter theory including a class of magnetic monopole operators. To take into account the interaction of monopoles and basic fields for large Chern-Simons level k, we consider the appropriate perturbation theory in 1/k which reliably describes small excitations around protected chiral operators. We also compute the superconformal index with some simple monopole operators and show that it agrees with the recent result obtained from localization. For this agreement, it is crucial that excitations of gauge fields and some matter scalars mix, w…
In this talk, we give a brief discussion of complex monopole solutions in the three dimensional Georgi-Glashow model with a Chern-Simons term. We find that there exist complex monopole solutions of finite action. They dominate the path integral and disorder the Higgs vacuum, but electric charges are not confined. Subtleties in the model and issues related to Gribov copies are also noted.
We investigate the three dimensional Georgi-Glashow model with a Chern-Simons term. We find that there exist complex monopole solutions of finite action. Subtleties in the gauge fixing procedure in the path integral and issues related to Gribov copies are noted.
We compute R-charges of the BPS-monopole operators in $\mathcal{N} = 3$ $\widehat{ADE}$ Chern-Simons quiver gauge theories, along the lines of the work of Benna, Klebanov and Klose in \cite{bkk}. These theories have a weakly coupled UV completion in terms of $\mathcal{N}=3$ supersymmetric Chern-Simons Yang-Mills theories. In the UV limit the monopole operators are well approximated by classical solutions. We construct classical BPS and anti-BPS monopole solutions to these theories which preserve $\frac{1}{3}$ supersymmetry all along the RG flow. We compute the $SU(2)_R$ charges in these backgr…
We construct the component action and supersymmetry transformations of the $\mathcal{N} = 3$ Chern-Simons-Yang-Mills theory that flows in the infra red to the $\mathcal{N} = 3$ super conformal quiver Chern-Simons gauge theory obtained by Jafferis and Tomasiello in \cite{Jafferis:2008qz}. We then obtain classical $\frac{1}{3}$-BPS (and anti-BPS) solutions all along the RG flow. The solutions display a rich structure, for example, there is a non-trivial moduli space. Various properties of supersymmetric monopole operators in the infra red super conformal field theory, such as global charges and …
We discuss monopole operators in $U(N_c)$ Chern-Simons-matter theories in three space-time dimensions. We mention an apparent problem in the matching of such operators in dualities between non-supersymmetric theories, and suggest a possible resolution. A similar apparent problem exists in the mapping of chiral monopole operators in theories with ${\cal N}=2$ supersymmetry. We show that in many theories the lowest naive chiral monopole operator is actually not chiral, and we find the lowest monopole operator that is actually chiral in these theories. It turns out that there are several differen…
We review work on construction of Monopoles in higher dimensions. These are solutions to a particular class of models descending from Yang--Mills systems on even dimensional bulk, with Spheres as codimensions. The topological lower bounds on the Yang-Mills action translate to Bogomol'nyi lower bounds on the residual Yang-Mills-Higgs systems. Mostly, consideration is restricted to 8 dimensional bulk systems, but extension to the arbitrary case follows systematically. After presenting the monopoles, the corresponding dyons are also constructed. Finally, new Chern-Simons densities expressed in te…
We compute a certain index for an N=4 Chern-Simons theory with gauge group U(N)^r in the large N limit with taking account of monopole contribution, and compare it to the corresponding multi-particle index for M-theory in the dual geometry AdS_4 x X_7. The internal space X_7 has non-trivial two-cycles, and M2-branes wrapped on them contribute to the multi-particle index. We establish one-to-one map between r-1 independent magnetic charges on the gauge theory side and the same number of charges on the gravity side: the M-momentum and r-2 (=b_2(X_7)) wrapping numbers. With a certain assumption f…
It is built a map between an Abelian Topological Quantum Field Theory, $2+1D$ compact U(1) gauge Maxwell Chern-Simons Theory and the nonrelativistic quantum mechanics Azbel-Hofstadter model of Bloch electrons. The $U_q(sl_2)$ quantum group and the magnetic translations group of the Azbel-Hofstadter model correspond to discretized subgroups of U(1) with linear gauge parameters. The magnetic monopole confining and condensate phases in the Topological Quantum Field Theory are identified with the extended (energy bands) and localized (gaps) phases of the Bloch electron. The magnetic monopole conde…
Monopoles in topologically massive gauge theories in 2+1 dimensions with a Chern-Simon mass term have been studied by Pisarski some years ago. He investigated the SU(2) Yang-Mills-Higgs model with an additional Chern-Simon mass term in the action. Pisarski argued that there is a monopole solution that is regular everywhere, but found that it does not possess finite action. There were no exact or numerical solutions being presented by Pisarski. Hence it is our purpose to further investigate this solution in more detail. We obtained numerical regular solutions that smoothly interpolates between …
Reducing a 3-dimensional Chern-Simons term by a symmetry yields other topologically interesting structures. Specifically, reducing by radial symmetry results in a 1-dimensional quantum mechanical model, which has recently been used in an analysis of finite-temperature Chern-Simons theory. The radially symmetric expression may be inserted into 3-dimensional monopole or (2+1)-dimensional instanton equations, where it eliminates the monopole or instanton solutions.
We describe solitons that live on the world--volumes of D5 branes wrapped on deformed $A_2$ singularities fibered over $C(x)$. We show that monopoles are D3 branes wrapped on a node of the deformed singularity and stretched along $C(x)$. F and D--term strings are D3 branes wrapped on a node of a singularity that is deformed and resolved respectively. Domain walls require deformed $A_3$ singularities and correspond to D5 branes wrapped on a node and stretched along $C(x)$.
We study $QED_3$ with magnetic-like defects using the Julia-Toulouse condensation mechanism (JTM). By a careful treatment of the symmetries we suggest a geometrical interpretation for distinct debatable issues in the MCS-monopole system: (i) the induction of the non-conserved electric current together with the Chern-Simons term (CS), (ii) the deconfinement transition and, (iii) the computation of the fermionic determinant in the presence of Dirac string singularities. The JTM leads to proper interpretation of the non-conserved current as originating from Dirac brane symmetry breaking. The mech…
We calculate the non-abelian R-charges of BPS monopole operators in three-dimensional gauge theories with N=3 supersymmetry. This class of models includes ABJM theory, the proposed gauge theory dual of M-theory on AdS_4 x S^7/Z_k, as a special case. In the UV limit of the N=3 theories the Yang-Mills coupling becomes weak and the monopole operators are described by classical backgrounds. This allows us to find their SU(2)_R charges in a one-loop computation which by virtue of the non-renormalization of non-abelian R-charges yields the exact result for any value of the coupling. The spectrum of …
There is significant evidence for a duality between (non-supersymmetric) U(N) Chern-Simons theories at level k coupled to fermions, and U(k) Chern-Simons theories at level N coupled to scalars. Most of the evidence comes from the large N 't Hooft limit, where many details of the duality (such as whether the gauge group is U(N) or SU(N), the precise level of the U(1) factor, and order one shifts in the level) are not important. The main evidence for the validity of the duality at finite N comes from adding masses and flowing to pure Chern-Simons theories related by level-rank duality, and from …
Monopole operators in Chern-Simons theories with charged matter have been studied using the state-operator map in CFTs, as states on $\mathbb{R}\times S^2$ with background magnetic flux on $S^2$. Gauge invariance requires a dressing with matter modes which provides non-zero spin to the monopoles. In this note we propose a description of the monopole operators directly on $\mathbb{R}^3$, as a singular behavior of the gauge and matter fields in the vicinity of the insertion point, with a dressing. We study abelian theories with a charged boson or a charged fermion. We extend the discussion to ab…
Classical Maxwell and Maxwell-Chern-Simons (MCS) Electrodynamics in (2+1)D are studied in some details. General expressions for the potential and fields are obtained for both models, and some particular cases are explicitly solved. Conceptual and technical difficulties arise, however, for accelerated charges. The propagation of electromagnetic signals is also studied and their reverberation is worked out and discussed. Furthermore, we show that a Dirac-like monopole yields a (static) tangential electric field. We also discuss some classical and quantum consequences of the field created by such…
We extend the hermitian three-algebra formulation of ABJM theory to include $U(1)$ factors. With attention payed to extra $U(1)$ factors, we refine the classification of $\N=6$ ABJM theories. We argue that essentially the only allowed gauge groups are $SU(N)\times SU(N)$, $U(N)\times U(M)$ and $Sp(N)\times U(1)$ and that we have only one independent Chern-Simons level in all these cases. Our argument is based on integrality of the $U(1)$ Chern-Simons levels and supersymmetry. A relation between monopole operators and Wilson lines in Chern-Simons theory suggests certain gauge representations of…
We study the interplay between four-derivative 4d gauged supergravity, holography, wrapped M5-branes, and theories of class $\mathcal{R}$. Using results from Chern-Simons theory on hyperbolic three-manifolds and the 3d-3d correspondence we are able to constrain the two independent coefficients in the four-derivative supergravity Lagrangian. This in turn allows us to calculate the subleading terms in the large-$N$ expansion of supersymmetric partition functions for an infinite class of three-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=2$ SCFTs of class $\mathcal{R}$. We also determine the leading correction to th…
We construct monopole operators for 3d Yang-Mills-matter theories and Chern-Simons-matter theories in canonical formalism. In this framework, monopole operators, although as the disorder operators, could be written in terms of the fundamental fields of the theory, and thus could be treated in the same way as the ordinary operators. We study the properties of the constructed monopole operators. In Chern-Simons-matter theories, monopole operators transform as the local operators with the classical conformal dimension $ 0 $ under the action of the dilation and are also covariantly constant. In su…
A recently constructed limit of K3 has a long neck consisting of segments, each of which is a nilfold fibred over a line, that are joined together with Kaluza-Klein monopoles. The neck is capped at either end by a Tian-Yau space, which is non-compact, hyperkahler and asymptotic to a nilfold fibred over a line. We show that the type IIA string on this degeneration of K3 is dual to the type I$'$ string, with the Kaluza-Klein monopoles dual to the D8-branes and the Tian-Yau spaces providing a geometric dual to the O8 orientifold planes. At strong coupling, each O8-plane can emit a D8-brane to giv…
Based on the result of string/string duality, we construct the six dimensional Yang monopole in terms of Type IIA wrapped D-branes. In particular, we show that all the information of such a magnetic solution can be encoded in the K3 surface compactification in the presence of D2 and D4-branes wrapping its non trivial cycles. We give a geometrical and physical interpretations for the {+1,-1} Yang monopole charges. Lifting to eleven dimensions, we relate this Type IIA configuration with the heterotic M-theory one, given in hep-th/0607193. The nature of the black Yang monopole is also discussed.
We compute four-derivative corrections to the AdS supergravity actions arising from the near-horizon geometry of N M5-branes wrapped on either one or two Riemann surfaces. This setup features the novel presence of both gauged isometries as well as nontrivial hypermultiplets. We argue that the 5d Chern-Simons terms receive not only higher-derivative corrections but also contributions from Killing vector parameters, which we find must also be corrected. We check the central charges found by our supergravity methods against the dual field theory results and find perfect agreement at leading and s…
We provide a world-sheet description of Neveu-Schwarz five-branes wrapped on a complex projective space. It is an orbifold of the product of an N=2 minimal model and the IR fixed point of a certain linear sigma model. We show how the naked singularity in the supergravity description is resolved by the world-sheet CFT. Applying mirror symmetry, we show that the low-energy theory of NS5-branes wrapped on CP^1 in Eguchi-Hanson space is described by the Seiberg-Witten prepotential for N=2 super-Yang-Mills, with the gauge group given by the ADE-type of the five-brane. The world-sheet CFT is generic…
We study monopole operators with the lowest possible topological charge $q=1/2$ at the infrared fixed point of scalar electrodynamics in $2+1$ dimension (scalar QED$_3$) with $N$ complex scalars and Chern-Simons coupling $|k|=N$. In the large $N$ expansion, monopole operators in this theory with spins $\ell<O(\sqrt{N})$ and associated flavor representations are expected to have the same scaling dimension to sub-leading order in $1/N$. We use the state-operator correspondence to calculate the scaling dimension to sub-leading order with the result $N-0.2789+O(1/N)$, which improves on existing le…
In the presence of Chern-Simons interactions the wave functionals of physical states in 2+1-dimensional gauge theories vanish at anumber of nodal points. We show that those nodes are located at some classical configurations which carry a non-trivial magnetic charge. In abelian gauge theories this fact explains why magnetic monopoles are suppressed by Chern-Simons interactions. In non-abelian theories it suggests a relevant role for nodal gauge field configurations in the confinement mechanism of Yang-Mills theories. We show that the vacuum nodes correspond to the chiral gauge orbits of reducib…
We study monopole operators at the infrared fixed points of $U(1)$ Chern-Simons-matter theories (QED$_3$, scalar QED$_3$, ${\cal N} =1$ SQED$_3$, and ${\cal N} = 2$ SQED$_3$) with $N$ matter flavors and Chern-Simons level $k$. We work in the limit where both $N$ and $k$ are taken to be large with $κ= k/N$ fixed. In this limit, we extract information about the low-lying spectrum of monopole operators from evaluating the $S^2 \times S^1$ partition function in the sector where the $S^2$ is threaded by magnetic flux $4 πq$. At leading order in $N$, we find a large number of monopole operators with…
We calculate the superconformal index for N=6 Chern-Simons-matter theory with gauge group U(N) X U(N) at arbitrary allowed value of the Chern-Simons level k. The calculation is based on localization of the path integral for the index. Our index counts supersymmetric gauge invariant operators containing inclusions of magnetic monopole operators, where latter operators create magnetic fluxes on 2-sphere. Through analytic and numerical calculations in various sectors, we show that our result perfectly agrees with the index over supersymmetric gravitons in AdS_4 X S^7/Z_k in the large N limit. Mon…
We discuss the generalization of Abelian Chern-Simons theories when $θ$-angles and magnetic monopoles are included. We map sectors of two dimensional Conformal Field Theories into these three dimensional theories.
We analyze the Chern-Simons field theory coupled to non-relativistic matter field on a sphere using canonical transformation on the fields with special attention to the role of the rotation symmetry: SO(3) invariance restricts the Hilbert space to the one with a definite number of charges and dictates Dirac quantization condition to the Chern-Simons coefficient, whereas SO(2) invariance does not. The corresponding Schrödinger equation for many anyons (and for multispecies) on the sphere are presented with appropriate boundary condition. In the presence of an external magnetic monopole source, …
We show that baryon-like operators exist in the N=6 superconformal Chern-Simons-matter theory constructed by Aharony, Bergman, Jafferis and Maldacena (ABJM). This involves the introduction of Wilson(or 't Hooft) lines ending on baryon-like operators and we show that the presence of such lines cannot be detected by the fields in the theory. The same construction can be used to make magnetic monopoles charged under the diagonal U(1) gauge group with arbitrary non-integral charge. If we do not include such monopole configurations in the path integral, the moduli space is known to be given by the …
We present a formula for the Hilbert series that counts gauge invariant chiral operators in a large class of 3d ${\cal N} \ge 2$ Yang-Mills-Chern-Simons theories. The formula counts 't Hooft monopole operators dressed by gauge invariants of a residual gauge theory of massless fields in the monopole background. We provide a general formula for the case of abelian theories, where nonperturbative corrections are absent, and consider a few examples of nonabelian theories where nonperturbative corrections are well understood. We also analyze in detail nonabelian ABJ(M) theories as well as worldvolu…
In the presence of a background supergravity flux, N M2-branes will expand via the Myers effect into M5-branes wrapped on a fuzzy three-sphere. In previous work the fluctuations of the M2-branes were shown to be described by the five-dimensional Yang-Mills gauge theory associated to D4-branes. We show that the ABJM prescription for eleven-dimensional momentum in terms of magnetic flux lifts to an instanton flux of the effective five-dimensional Yang-Mills theory on the sphere, giving an M-theory interpretation for these instantons.
A brane picture in Type IIA superstring for the Yang Monopole is reconsidered. It makes use of D2 and D4-branes wrapped on cycles in the K3 surface. When the model was first presented some problems concerning the charges of the monopoles arised. In this paper, they are shown to be cured by the model itself. Surprisingly, the incompatibility between the multi-charge configuration and the spherical symmetry of the Yang Monopole is seen in the brane description as the emergence of the enhancon shell and the fuzzy geometry. This consistency is deep and surprising, and is the point that triggered t…
We elaborate on quantum moduli spaces in 3d $\mathcal{N}=2$ $SU(N)_k$ Chern-Simons gauge theories with $F$ fundamental and $\bar{F}$ anti-fundamental matter fields. The quantum flat direction on the Coulomb branch differs so much from the classical one and from the one of the vector-like theories. In many cases, the Coulomb branch is parametrized by the dressed monopoles. As is found from the computation of the superconformal index, these dressed operators at first sight appear to be dressed by massive elementary fields which don't seem to contribute to the low-energy physics. We argue that th…
We study monopole-instantons in M2-brane theories, focussing on the ABJM class of Chern-Simons gauge theories coupled to matter. We calculate calculate explicitly the 8-fermion term in the effective action induced by these monopole-instantons, and discuss their role in resolving a classical singularity in the moduli space. The results are compared with monopole-instantons in N=8 3d SYM and D-brane theories, as well the dual supergravity description as a membrane scattering process.
The relation between the Dirac quantization condition of magnetic charge and the quantization of the Chern-Simons coefficient is obtained. It implies that in a (2+1)-dimensional QED with the Chern-Simons topological mass term and the existence of a magnetic monopole with magnetic charge $g$, the Chern-Simons coefficient must be also quantized, just as in the non-Abelian case.
We present three holographic constructions of fractional quantum Hall effect (FQHE) via string theory. The first model studies edge states in FQHE using supersymmetric domain walls in N=6 Chern-Simons theory. We show that D4-branes wrapped on CP^1 or D8-branes wrapped on CP^3 create edge states that shift the rank or the level of the gauge group, respectively. These holographic edge states correctly reproduce the Hall conductivity. The second model presents a holographic dual to the pure U(N)_k (Yang-Mills-)Chern-Simons theory based on a D3-D7 system. Its holography is equivalent to the level-…
Using mirror symmetry, we show that Chern-Simons theory on certain manifolds such as lens spaces reduces to a novel class of Hermitian matrix models, where the measure is that of unitary matrix models. We show that this agrees with the more conventional canonical quantization of Chern-Simons theory. Moreover, large N dualities in this context lead to computation of all genus A-model topological amplitudes on toric Calabi-Yau manifolds in terms of matrix integrals. In the context of type IIA superstring compactifications on these Calabi-Yau manifolds with wrapped D6 branes (which are dual to M-…

The topological nature of Chern-Simons term describing the interaction of a charge with magnetic monopole is manifested in two ways: it changes the plane dynamical geometry of a free particle for the cone dynamical geometry without distorting the free (geodesic) character of the motion, and in the limit of zero charge's mass it describes a spin system. This observation allows us to interpret the charge-monopole system alternatively as a free particle of fixed spin with translational and spin degrees of freedom interacting via the helicity constraint, or as a symmetric spinning top with dynamic…
Electric and magnetic charges of a certain class of operators in N=2 large N quiver Chern-Simons theories are investigated. We consider only non-chiral theories, in which every bi-fundamental field appears with its conjugate representation. By interpreting operators in a Chern-Simons theory as wrapped M-branes in the dual geometry AdS_4 x X_7, we partly determine the homologies of X_7.
We consider models in which nonrelativistic matter fields interact with gauge fields whose dynamics are governed by the Chern-Simons term. The relevant equations of motion are derived and reduced dimensionally in time or in space. Interesting solitonic equations emerge and their solutions are described. Finally, we consider a Chern-Simons term in three-dimensional Euclidean space, reduced by spherical symmetry, and we discuss its effect on monopole and instanton solutions.
Building on the recent progress in solving Chern-Simons-matter theories in the planar limit, we compute the scaling dimensions of a large class of disorder ("monopole") operators in $U(N)_k$ Chern-Simons-fermion theories at all 't Hooft couplings $λ= N/k$. We find that the lowest-dimension operator of this sort has dimension $\frac23 k^{3/2}$. We comment on the implications of these results to analyzing maps of fermionic disorder operators under 3D bosonization.
Using a Kaluza-Klein reduction of the Dirac-Born-Infeld and Chern-Simons action we compute the four dimensional N=1 effective action for the massless modes of a D7-brane which is wrapped on a four-cycle of a compact Calabi-Yau orientifold. We do not consider a specific orientifold but instead determine the Kahler potential, the gauge kinetic functions and the scalar potential in terms of geometrical data of a generic orientifold and its wrapped four-cycle. In particular we derive the couplings of the D-brane excitations to the bulk moduli of the orientifold as they are important for the study …
With two typical parent actions we have two kinds of dual worlds: i) one of which contains an electric as well as magnetic current, and ii) the other contains (generalized) Chern-Simons terms. All these fields are defined on a curved spacetime of arbitrary (odd) dimensions. A new form of gauge transformations is introduced and plays an essential role in defining the interaction with a magnetic monopole or in defining the generalized Chern-Simons terms.
We describe cosmic F--term strings with exponentially small tension which are D3 branes wrapped on deformed $A_3$ singularities. We show that brane instanton effects which can be calculated after a geometric transition give rise to an exponentially small volume for the node on which the D3 branes wrap leading to a string with small tension. We generalize our description to the case of non--Abelian cosmic strings and argue that these strings are stable against monopole--anti monopole pair creation.
We investigate a class of hierarchical multiple layers of fractional quantum Hall soliton (FQHS) systems from Chern-Simons quivers embedded in M-theory on the cotangent on a 2-dimensional complex toric variety \bf V^2, which is dual to type IIA superstring on a 3-dimensional complex manifold \bf {CP}^1\times V^2 fibered over a real line \mathbb{R}. Based on M-theory/Type IIA duality, FQHS systems can be derived from wrapped D4-branes on 2-cycles in \bf {CP}^1\times V^2 type IIA geometry. In this realization, the magnetic source can be identified with gauge fields obtained from the decompositio…
In earlier work with N. Seiberg, we explored connections between monopole operators, the Coulomb branch modulus, and vortices for 3d, N=2 supersymmetric, $U(1)_k$ Chern-Simons matter theories. We here extend the monopole / vortex matching analysis, to theories with general matter electric charges. We verify, for general matter content, that the spin and other quantum numbers of the chiral monopole operators match those of corresponding BPS vortex states, at the top and bottom of the tower associated with quantizing the vortices' Fermion zero modes. There are associated subtleties from non-norm…
We study the large $N$ expansion of twisted partition functions of 3d $\mathcal{N}=2$ superconformal field theories arising from $N$ M5-branes wrapped on a hyperbolic 3-manifold, $M_3$. Via the 3d-3d correspondence, the partition functions of these 3d ${\cal N}=2$ superconformal field theories are related to simple topological invariants on the 3-manifold. The partition functions can be expressed using only classical and one-loop perturbative invariants of $PSL(N,\mathbb{C})$ Chern-Simons theory around irreducible flat connections on $M_3$. Using mathematical results on the asymptotics of the …
We apply the methods recently developed for computation of type IIA disk instantons using mirror symmetry to a large class of D-branes wrapped over Lagrangian cycles of non-compact Calabi-Yau 3-folds. Along the way we clarify the notion of ``flat coordinates'' for the boundary theory. We also discover an integer IR ambiguity needed to define the quantum theory of D-branes wrapped over non-compact Lagrangian submanifolds. In the large $N$ dual Chern-Simons theory, this ambiguity is mapped to the UV choice of the framing of the knot. In a type IIB dual description involving $(p,q)$ 5-branes, dis…
