We study the topological heterotic ring in (0,2) Landau-Ginzburg models without a (2,2) locus. The ring elements correspond to elements of the Koszul cohomology groups associated to a zero-dimensional ideal in a polynomial ring, and the computation of half-twisted genus zero correlators reduces to a map from the first non-trivial Koszul cohomology group to complex numbers. This map is a generalization of the local Grothendieck residue. The results may be applied to computations of Yukawa couplings in a heterotic compactification at a Landau-Ginzburg point.
In this paper, we study the bigraded vector space structure of Landau-Ginzburg orbifolds. We prove the formula for the generating function of the Hodge numbers of possibly nonabelian Landau-Ginzburg orbifolds. As an application, we calculate the Hodge numbers for all nondegenerate quintic homogeneous polynomials with five variables. These results yield an evidence for the Calabi-Yau/Landau-Ginzburg correspondence between the Calabi-Yau geometries and the Landau-Ginzburg B-models.
In this paper, we discuss elliptic genera of (2,2) and (0,2) supersymmetric Landau-Ginzburg models over nontrivial spaces, i.e., nonlinear sigma models on nontrivial noncompact manifolds with superpotential, generalizing old computations in Landau-Ginzburg models over (orbifolds of) vector spaces. For Landau-Ginzburg models in the same universality class as nonlinear sigma models, we explicitly check that the elliptic genera of the Landau-Ginzburg models match that of the nonlinear sigma models, via a Thom class computation of a form analogous to that appearing in recent studies of other prope…
We investigate a class of (2,2) supersymmetric string vacua which may be represented as Landau--Ginzburg theories with a quasihomogeneous potential which has an isolated singularity at the origin. There are at least three thousand distinct models in this class. All vacua of this type lead to Euler numbers which lie in the range $-960 \leq χ\leq 960$. The Euler characteristics do not pair up completely hence the space of Landau--Ginzburg ground states is not mirror symmetric even though it exhibits a high degree of symmetry. We discuss in some detail the relation between Landau--Ginzburg models…
In this paper we discuss correlation functions in certain A-twisted Landau-Ginzburg models. Although B-twisted Landau-Ginzburg models have been discussed extensively in the literature, virtually no work has been done on A-twisted theories. In particular, we study examples of Landau-Ginzburg models over topologically nontrivial spaces - not just vector spaces - away from large-radius limits, so that one expects nontrivial curve corrections. By studying examples of Landau-Ginzburg models in the same universality class as nonlinear sigma models on nontrivial Calabi-Yaus, we obtain nontrivial test…
The conjecture that $N=2$ minimal models in two dimensions are critical points of a super-renormalizable Landau-Ginzburg model can be tested by computing the path integral of the Landau-Ginzburg model with certain twisted boundary conditions. This leads to simple expressions for certain characters of the $N=2$ models which can be verified at least at low levels. An $N=2$ superconformal algebra can in fact be found directly in the {\it noncritical} Landau-Ginzburg system, giving further support for the conjecture.
In this short paper, we try to explain how to use our program which has been written in Wolfram Mathematica to get the massless spectrum of any Landau-Ginzburg orbifold. The technique has been developed by Witten-Kachru theoretically, but calculating it for an explicit Landau-Ginzburg model is exhausting and in general, beyond human ability to calculate using pen and paper.
In this paper we discuss correlation function computations in massive topological Landau-Ginzburg orbifolds, extending old results of Vafa. We then apply these computations to provide further tests of the nonabelian mirrors proposal and two-dimensional Hori-Seiberg dualities with $(S)O_{\pm}$ gauge groups and their mirrors.
We consider Landau-Ginzburg models with possibly different superpotentials glued together along one-dimensional defect lines. Defects preserving B-type supersymmetry can be represented by matrix factorisations of the difference of the superpotentials. The composition of these defects and their action on B-type boundary conditions is described in this framework. The cases of Landau-Ginzburg models with superpotential W=X^d and W=X^d+Z^2 are analysed in detail, and the results are compared to the CFT treatment of defects in N=2 superconformal minimal models to which these Landau-Ginzburg models …
We make a connection between quantum phase transitions in condensed matter systems, and supersymmetric gauge theories that are of interest in the particle physics literature. In particular, we point out interesting effects of the supersymmetric quantum electrodynamics upon the critical behavior of the Ginzburg-Landau model. It is shown that supersymmetry fixes the critical exponents, as well as the Landau-Ginzburg parameter, and that the model resides in the type II regime of superconductivity.
We construct the Poincare polynomials for Landau-Ginzburg orbifolds with projection operators.Using them we show that special types of dualities including Poincare duality are realized under certain conditions. When Calabi-Yau interpretation exists, two simple formulae for Hodge numbers $h^{2,1}$ and $h^{1,1}$ are obtained.
We study D-branes in Kazama-Suzuki models by means of the boundary state description. We can identify the boundary states of Kazama-Suzuki models with the solitons in N=2 Landau-Ginzburg theories. We also propose a geometrical interpretation of the boundary states in Kazama-Suzuki models.
We classify (0,2) Landau-Ginzburg theories that can flow to compact IR fixed points with equal left and right central charges strictly bounded by 3. Our result is a (0,2) generalization of the ADE classification of (2,2) Landau-Ginzburg theories that flow to N=2 minimal models. Unitarity requires the right-moving supersymmetric sector to fall into the standard N=2 minimal model representations, but the left-moving sector need not have supersymmetry. The Landau-Ginzburg realizations provide a simple way to compute the chiral algebra and other characteristics of these fixed points. While our res…
The Landau-Ginzburg formulation of two-dimensional topological sigma models on the target space with positive first Chern class is considered. The effective Landau-Ginzburg superpotential takes the form of logarithmic type which is characteristic of supersymmetric theories with the mass gap. The equations of motion yield the defining relations of the quantum cohomology ring. Topological correlation functions in the $CP^{n-1}$ and Grassmannian models are explicitly evaluated with the use of the logarithmic superpotential.
We compute the elliptic genera of orbifolds associated with $N=2$ super--conformal theories which admit a Landau-Ginzburg description. The identification of the elliptic genera of the macroscopic Landau-Ginzburg orbifolds with those of the corresponding microscopic $N=2$ orbifolds further supports the conjectured identification of these theories. For $SU(N)$ Kazama-Suzuki models the orbifolds are associated with certain $\IZ_p$ subgroups of the various coset factors. Based on our approach we also conjecture the existence of "$E$-type" variants of these theories, their elliptic genera and the c…
We present the new explicit geometrical knowledge of the Landau-Ginzburg orbifolds, when a typical type of superpotential is considered. Relying on toric geometry, we show the one-to-one correspondence between some of the $(a,c)$ states with $U(1)$ charges $(-1,1)$ and the $(1,1)$ forms coming from blowing-up processes. Consequently, we find the monomial-divisor mirror map for Landau-Ginzburg orbifolds. The possibility of the application of the models of other types is briefly discussed.
We construct a family of minimal phenomenological models for holographic superconductors in d=4+1 AdS spacetime and study the effect of scalar and gauge field fluctuations. By making a Ginzburg-Landau interpretation of the dual field theory, we determine through holographic techniques a phenomenological Ginzburg-Landau Lagrangian and the temperature dependence of physical quantities in the superconducting phase. We obtain insight on the behaviour of the Ginzburg-Landau parameter and whether the systems behaves as a Type I or Type II superconductor. Finally, we apply a constant external magneti…
We find and analyze the Landau-Ginzburg potentials whose critical points determine chiral rings which are exactly the fusion rings of Sp(N)_{K} WZW models. The quasi-homogeneous part of the potential associated with Sp(N)_{K} is the same as the quasi-homogeneous part of that associated with SU(N+1)_{K}, showing that these potentials are different perturbations of the same Grassmannian potential. Twisted N=2 topological Landau-Ginzburg theories are derived from these superpotentials. The correlation functions, which are just the Sp(N)_{K} Verlinde dimensions, are expressed as fusion residues. W…
We compute correlators of chiral operators in (0,2) supersymmetric Landau-Ginzburg theories. The class of theories and the correlators we study are relevant for extending and testing mirror symmetry away from the (2,2) locus. More generally, these methods provide alpha'-exact results about certain superpotential couplings in compactifications of the heterotic string.
In this paper, we apply the methods developed in recent work for constructing A-twisted (2,2) Landau-Ginzburg models to analogous (0,2) models. In particular, we study (0,2) Landau-Ginzburg models on topologically non-trivial spaces away from large-radius limits, where one expects to find correlation function contributions akin to (2,2) curve corrections. Such heterotic theories admit A- and B-model twists, and exhibit a duality that simultaneously exchanges the twists and dualizes the gauge bundle. We explore how this duality operates in heterotic Landau-Ginzburg models, as well as other prop…
We study deformations of Landau-Ginzburg D-branes corresponding to obstructed rational curves on Calabi-Yau threefolds. We determine D-brane moduli spaces and D-brane superpotentials by evaluating higher products up to homotopy in the Landau-Ginzburg orbifold category. For concreteness we work out the details for lines on a perturbed Fermat quintic. In this case we show that our results reproduce the local analytic structure of the Hilbert scheme of curves on the threefold.
It is observed that a large class of $(2,2)$ string vacua with $n>5$ superfields can be rewritten as Landau_Ginzburg orbifolds with discrete torsion and $n=5$. The naive geometric interpretation (if one exists) would be that of a complex 3-fold, not necessarily Kähler but still with vanishing first Chern class.
Based on work by Orlov, we give a precise recipe for mapping between B-type D-branes in a Landau-Ginzburg orbifold model (or Gepner model) and the corresponding large-radius Calabi-Yau manifold. The D-branes in Landau-Ginzburg theories correspond to matrix factorizations and the D-branes on the Calabi-Yau manifolds are objects in the derived category. We give several examples including branes on quotient singularities associated to weighted projective spaces. We are able to confirm several conjectures and statements in the literature.
We construct Landau-Ginzburg Lagrangians for minimal bosonic ($N=0$) $W$-models perturbed with the least relevant field, inspired by the theory of $N=2$ supersymmetric Landau-Ginzburg Lagrangians. They agree with the Lagrangians for unperturbed models previously found with Zamolodchikov's method. We briefly study their properties, e.g. the perturbation algebra and the soliton structure. We conclude that the known properties of $N=2$ solitons (BPS, lines in $W$ plane, etc.) hold as well. Hence, a connection with a generalized supersymmetric structure of minimal $W$-models is conjectured.
We construct fractional branes in Landau-Ginzburg orbifold categories and study their behavior under marginal closed string perturbations. This approach is shown to be more general than the rational boundary state construction. In particular we find new D-branes on the quintic -- such as a single D0-brane -- which are not restrictions of bundles on the ambient projective space. We also exhibit a family of deformations of the D0-brane in the Landau-Ginzburg category parameterized by points on the Fermat quintic.
Given a Fano complete intersection defined by sections of a collection nef line bundles $L_1,\ldots, L_c$ on a Fano toric manifold $Y$, a construction of Givental/Hori-Vafa provides a mirror-dual Landau-Ginzburg model. This construction depends on a choice of suitable nef partition; that is, a partition of the rays of the fan determined by $Y$. We show that toric Landau-Ginzburg models constructed from different nef partitions representing the same complete intersection are related by a volume preserving birational map. In particular, various Laurent polynomial mirrors which may be obtained fr…
We summarize the description of the open-closed TFT datum for B-type Landau-Ginzburg models with Stein manifold targets and discuss various constructions which lead to large classes of examples of such models.
The Landau-Ginzburg/Calabi-Yau correspondence claims that the Gromov-Witten invariant of the quintic Calabi-Yau 3-fold should be related to the Fan-Jarvis-Ruan-Witten invariant of the associated Landau-Ginzburg model via wall crossings. In this paper, we consider the stack of quasi-maps with a cosection and introduce sequences of stability conditions which enable us to interpolate between the moduli stack for Gromov-Witten invariants and the moduli stack for Fan-Jarvis-Ruan-Witten invariants.
We prove the Landau-Ginzburg mirror symmetry conjecture between invertible quasi-homogeneous polynomial singularities at all genera. That is, we show that the FJRW theory (LG A-model) of such a polynomial is equivalent to the Saito-Givental theory (LG B-model) of the mirror polynomial.
Under holographic prescription for Schwinger-Keldysh closed time contour for non-equilibrium system, we consider fluctuation effect of the order parameter in a holographic superconductor model. Near the critical point, we derive the time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau effective action governing dynamics of the fluctuating order parameter. In a semi-analytical approach, the time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau action is computed up to quartic order of the fluctuating order parameter, and first order in time derivative.
We present some mathematical aspects of Landau-Ginzburg string vacua in terms of toric geometry. The one-to-one correspondence between toric divisors and some of (-1,1) states in Landau-Ginzburg model is presented for superpotentials of typical types. The Landau-Ginzburg interpretation of non-toric divisors is also presented. Using this interpretation, we propose a method to solve the so-called "twisted sector problem" by orbifold construction. Moreover, this construction shows that the moduli spaces of the original Landau-Ginzburg string vacua and their orbifolds are connected. By considering …
Given an algebra with group $G$-action, we construct brace structures for its $G$-twisted Hochschild cochains. An an application, we construct $G$-Frobenius algebras for orbifold Landau-Ginzburg B-models and present explicit orbifold cup product formula for all invertible polynomials.
We give a straightforward generalization of the Ginzburg-Landau theory for superconductors where the scalar phase field is replaced by an antisymmetric Kalb-Ramond field. We predict that at very low temperatures, where quantum phase effects are expected to play a significant role, the presence of vortices destroys superconductivity.
We prove a version of the Landau-Ginzburg/Calabi-Yau correspondence for the mirror quintic. In particular we calculate the genus-zero FJRW theory for the pair (W, G) where W is the Fermat quintic polynomial and G = SL(W). We identify it with the Gromov-Witten theory of the mirror quintic three-fold via an explicit analytic continuation and symplectic transformation. In the process we prove a mirror theorem for the corresponding Landau-Ginzburg model (W,G).
In this paper we prove the smoothness of the moduli space of Landau-Ginzburg models. We formulate and prove a Tian-Todorov theorem for the deformations of Landau-Ginzburg models, develop the necessary Hodge theory for varieties with potentials, and prove a double degeneration statement needed for the unobstructedness result. We discuss the various definitions of Hodge numbers for non-commutative Hodge structures of Landau-Ginzburg type and the role they play in mirror symmetry. We also interpret the resulting families of de Rham complexes attacted to a potential in terms of mirror symmetry for…
We present a class of three-dimensional integrable structures associated with the Darboux-Egoroff metric and classical Euler equations of free rotations of a rigid body. They are obtained as canonical structures of rational Landau-Ginzburg potentials and provide solutions to the Painleve VI equation.
We describe rules for computing a homology theory of knots and links in $\mathbb{R}^3$. It is derived from the theory of framed BPS states bound to domain walls separating two-dimensional Landau-Ginzburg models with (2,2) supersymmetry. We illustrate the rules with some sample computations, obtaining results consistent with Khovanov homology. We show that of the two Landau-Ginzburg models discussed in this context by Gaiotto and Witten one, (the so-called Yang-Yang-Landau-Ginzburg model) does not lead to topological invariants of links while the other, based on a model with target space equal …
In this paper we prove an analogue of the McKay correspondence for Landau-Ginzburg models. Our proof is based on the ideas introduced by T. Bridgeland, A. King and M. Reid, which reformulate and generalize the McKay correspondence in the language of derived categories, along with the techniques introduced by J.-C. Chen.
Time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau model with noise for neutral s-wave superconductor is derived from real-time finite-temperature quantum field theory by integrating over fermions in the density matrix propagator. Quantum decoherence due to environment of pair breaking fluctuations is identified. Dynamics is described by Langevin equation in the near critical regime and by a nonlinear Schrodinger equation at zero temperature.
The post Gaussian effective potential in D=3 dimensions and the Gaussian effective potential in D=2+epsilon are evaluated for the Ginzburg-Landau theory of superconductivity. It is shown that, the next order correction to the Gaussian approximation of the Ginzburg-Landau parameter (kappa) is significant, whereas contribution from the two dimensionality is rather small. This strongly indicates that strong correlation plays a more dominant role than the two dimensionality does in high T_c superconductivity.
The time evolution of several interacting Ginzburg-Landau vortices according to an equation of Schroedinger type is approximated by motion on a finite-dimensional manifold. That manifold is defined as an unstable manifold of an auxiliary dynamical system, namely the gradient flow of the Ginzburg-Landau energy functional. For two vortices the relevant unstable manifold is constructed numerically and the induced dynamics is computed. The resulting model provides a complete picture of the vortex motion for arbitrary vortex separation, including well-separated and nearly coincident vortices.
