In this paper, we apply the methods developed in recent work for constructing A-twisted (2,2) Landau-Ginzburg models to analogous (0,2) models. In particular, we study (0,2) Landau-Ginzburg models on topologically non-trivial spaces away from large-radius limits, where one expects to find correlation function contributions akin to (2,2) curve corrections. Such heterotic theories admit A- and B-model twists, and exhibit a duality that simultaneously exchanges the twists and dualizes the gauge bundle. We explore how this duality operates in heterotic Landau-Ginzburg models, as well as other properties of these theories, using examples which RG flow to heterotic nonlinear sigma models as checks on our methods.
The aim of this talk is to derive two constraints imposed by supersymmetry for a class of heterotic Landau-Ginzburg models with nonholomorphic superpotentials. One of these constraints relates the nonholomorphic parameters of the superpotential to the Hermitian curvature. Various special cases of this constraint have been used to establish properties of Mathai-Quillen form analogues which arise in the corresponding heterotic Landau-Ginzburg models. The other constraint was not anticipated from studies of Mathai-Quillen form analogues.
In this paper, we study a class of heterotic Landau-Ginzburg models. We show that the action can be written as a sum of BRST-exact and non-exact terms. The non-exact terms involve the pullback of the complexified Kahler form to the worldsheet and terms arising from the superpotential, which is a Grassmann-odd holomorphic function of the superfields. We then demonstrate that the action is invariant on-shell under supersymmetry transformations up to a total derivative. Finally, we extend the analysis to the case in which the superpotential is not holomorphic. In this case, we find that supersymm…
In this paper we discuss correlation functions in certain A-twisted Landau-Ginzburg models. Although B-twisted Landau-Ginzburg models have been discussed extensively in the literature, virtually no work has been done on A-twisted theories. In particular, we study examples of Landau-Ginzburg models over topologically nontrivial spaces - not just vector spaces - away from large-radius limits, so that one expects nontrivial curve corrections. By studying examples of Landau-Ginzburg models in the same universality class as nonlinear sigma models on nontrivial Calabi-Yaus, we obtain nontrivial test…
As shown by Hořava and Witten, there are gravitational anomalies at the boundaries of $M^{10}\times S^1/Z_2$ of 11 dimensional supergravity. They showed that only 10 dimensional vector multiplets belonging to $E_8$ gauge group can be consistently coupled to this theory. Thus, the dimensional reduction of this theory should be the low energy limit of the $E_8\times E_8$ heterotic string. Here we assume that M-theory is a theory of supermembranes which includes twisted supermembranes. We show that for a target space $M^{10}\times S^1/Z_2$, in the limit in which $S^1/Z_2$ is small, the effective …
We compute correlators of chiral operators in (0,2) supersymmetric Landau-Ginzburg theories. The class of theories and the correlators we study are relevant for extending and testing mirror symmetry away from the (2,2) locus. More generally, these methods provide alpha'-exact results about certain superpotential couplings in compactifications of the heterotic string.
We obtain the spectrum of heterotic strings compactified on orbifolds, focusing on its algebraic structure. Affine Lie algebra provides its current algebra and representations. In particular the twisted spectrum and the Abelian charge are understood. The twisted version of algebra is used in the homomorphism from the orbifold action to the group action. The relation between the conformal weight and the mass gives a handy rule.
M(atrix) theory on an orbifold and classical two-branes therein are studied with particular emphasis to heterotic M(atrix) theory on $S_1/Z_2$ relevant to strongly coupled heterotic and dual Type IA string theories. By analyzing orbifold condition on Chan-Paton factors, we show that three choice of gauge group are possible for heterotic M(atrix) theory: SO(2N), SO(2N+1) or USp(2N). By examining area-preserving diffeomorphism that underlies the M(atrix) theory, we find that each choices of gauge group restricts possible topologies of two-branes. The result suggests that only the choice of SO(2N…
We calculate couplings of arbitrary order from correlation functions among twisted strings, using conformal field theory. Twisted strings arise in heterotic string compactified on orbifolds yielding matter fields in the low energy limit. We calculate completely the classical and the quantum amplitude including normalization, up to a contribution from Kahler potential. The classical action has saddle points which are interpreted as worldsheet instantons described by metastable untwisted strings, formed by twisted strings distributed at certain fixed points. This understanding generalizes the ar…
In this work we attempt to bridge the gap between heterotic orbifold models and Calabi-Yau compactifications using gauged linear sigma models (GLSMs) with (2,0) worldsheet supersymmetry. We associate a specific GLSM to a heterotic orbifold model with twisted states that have non-vanishing vacuum expectation values (VEVs): The charges of the GLSM superfields are essentially determined by the shifted momenta of these states. When a twisted state contains an oscillator excitation, a fermionic gauging is introduced on the worldsheet inducing a non-Abelian gauge bundle, e.g. the standard embedding.…
We study the topological heterotic ring in (0,2) Landau-Ginzburg models without a (2,2) locus. The ring elements correspond to elements of the Koszul cohomology groups associated to a zero-dimensional ideal in a polynomial ring, and the computation of half-twisted genus zero correlators reduces to a map from the first non-trivial Koszul cohomology group to complex numbers. This map is a generalization of the local Grothendieck residue. The results may be applied to computations of Yukawa couplings in a heterotic compactification at a Landau-Ginzburg point.
We present a two-dimensional heterotic N=(0,2) CP(N-1) model with twisted masses. It is supposed to describe internal dynamics of non-Abelian strings in massive N=2 SQCD with N=1-preserving deformations. We present gauge and geometric formulations of the world-sheet theory and check its N=(0,2) supersymmetry. It turns out that the set of twisted masses in the heterotic model has N complex mass parameters, rather than N-1. In the general case, when all mass parameters are nonvanishing, N=(0,2) supersymmetry is spontaneously broken already at the classical level. If at least one of the above mas…
We formulate a twisted version of the conjectured duality between heterotic and type I string theories. Our formulation relates the chiral part of the heterotic string with a type I topological B-model on a Calabi-Yau five-fold. We provide a non-trivial check of this duality by showing that certain infinite-dimensional Lie algebras of global gauge transformations built from each theory are isomorphic. Matching the structure constants of the Lie algebras involves a detailed analysis of one-loop corrections on the type I side.
In this paper we study the low energy physics of Landau-Ginzburg models with N=(0,2) supersymmetry. We exhibit a number of classes of relatively simple LG models where the conformal field theory at the low energy fixed point can be explicitly identified. One interesting class of fixed points can be thought of as "heterotic" minimal models. Other examples include N=(0,2) renormalization group flows that end up at N=(2,2) minimal models and models with non-abelian symmetry.
We study half-twisted linear sigma models relevant to (0,2) compactifications of the heterotic string. Focusing on theories with a (2,2) locus, we examine the linear model parameter space and the dependence of genus zero half-twisted correlators on these parameters. We show that in a class of theories the correlators and parameters separate into A and B types, present techniques to compute the dependence, and apply these to some examples. These results should bear on the mathematics of (0,2) mirror symmetry and the physics of the moduli space and Yukawa couplings in heterotic compactifications…
Inspired by the tachyon-free non-supersymmetric heterotic SO(16)xSO(16) string we consider a special class of non-supersymmetric field theories: Those that can be obtained from supersymmetric field theories by supersymmetry breaking twists. We argue that such theories, like their supersymmetric counter parts, may still possess some fermionic symmetries as left-overs of the super gauge transformations and have special one-loop non-renormalization properties due to holomorphicity. In addition, we extend the supergraph techniques to these theories to calculate some explicit supersymmetry-breaking…
We develop techniques to compute the complete the massless spectrum in heterotic string compactification on N=2 supersymmetric Landau-Ginzburg orbifolds. This includes not just the familiar charged fields, but also the gauge singlets. The number of gauge singlets can vary in the moduli space of a given compactification and can differ from what it would be in the large radius limit of the corresponding Calabi-Yau. Comparison with exactly soluble Gepner models provides a confirmation of our results at Gepner points. Our methods carry over straightforwardly to $(0,2)$ Landau-Ginzburg models.
We are considering the class of heterotic $\mathcal{N}=(2,2)$ Landau-Ginzburg orbifolds with 9 fields corresponding to $A_1^9$ Gepner models. We classify all of its Abelian discrete quotients and obtain 152 inequivalent models closed under mirror symmetry with $\mathcal{N}=1,2$ and $4$ supersymmetry in 4D. We compute the full massless matter spectrum at the Fermat locus and find a universal relation satisfied by all models. In addition we give prescriptions of how to compute all quantum numbers of the 4D states including their discrete R-symmetries. Using mirror symmetry of rigid geometries we…
We study the relation between a heterotic T^6/Z6 orbifold model and a compactification on a smooth Voisin-Borcea Calabi-Yau three-fold with non-trivial line bundles. This orbifold can be seen as a Z2 quotient of T^4/Z3 x T^2. We consider a two-step resolution, whose intermediate step is (K3 x T^2)/Z2. This allows us to identify the massless twisted states which correspond to the geometric Kaehler and complex structure moduli. We work out the match of the two models when non-zero expectation values are given to all twisted geometric moduli. We find that even though the orbifold gauge group cont…
We address a number of unanswered questions in the N=(0,2)-deformed CP(N-1) model with twisted masses. In particular, we complete the program of solving CP(N-1) model with twisted masses in the large-N limit. In hep-th/0512153 nonsupersymmetric version of the model with the Z_N symmetric twisted masses was analyzed in the framework of Witten's method. In arXiv:0803.0698 this analysis was extended: the large-N solution of the heterotic N=(0,2) CP(N-1) model with no twisted masses was found. Here we solve this model with the twisted masses switched on. Dynamical scenarios at large and small m ar…
We investigate the structure of local anomalies of heterotic E_8 x E_8' theory on T^6/Z_4. We show that the untwisted states lead to anomalies in ten, six and four dimensions. At each of the six dimensional fixed spaces of this orbifold the twisted states ensure, that the anomalies factorize separately. As some of these twisted states live on T^2/Z_2, they give rise to four dimensional anomalies as well. At all four dimensional fixed points at worst a single Abelian anomaly can arise. Since the anomalies in all these dimensions factorize in a universal way, they can be canceled simultaneously.…
We investigate $N=2$ extended superconformal symmetry, using the half-twisted Landau-Ginzburg models. The first example is the $D_{2n+2}$ -type minimal model. It has been conjectured that this model has a spin $n$ super $W$ current. We checked this by the direct computations of the BRS cohomology class up to $n=4$. We observe for $n\le 3$ the super W currents generate the ring isomorphic to the chiral ring of the model with respect to the classical product. We thus conjecture that this isomorphism holds for any $n$. The next example is $ CP_{n}$ coset model. In this case we find a sort of Miur…
We construct a class of Heterotic String vacua described by Landau--Ginzburg theories and consider orbifolds of these models with respect to abelian symmetries. For LG--vacua described by potentials in which at most three scaling fields are coupled we explicitly construct the chiral ring and discuss its diagonalization with respect to its most general abelian symmetry. For theories with couplings between at most two fields we present results of an explicit construction of the LG--potentials and their orbifolds. The emerging space of (2,2)--theories shows a remarkable mirror symmetry. It also c…
Horava--Witten M theory -- heterotic string duality poses special problems for the twisted sectors of heterotic orbifolds. In [1] we explained how in M theory the twisted states couple to gauge fields apparently living on M9 branes at both ends of the eleventh dimension at the same time. The resolution involves 7D gauge fields which live on fixed planes of the (T^4/Z_N) x (S^1/Z_2) x R^{5,1} orbifold and lock onto the 10D gauge fields along the intersection planes. The physics of such intersection planes does not follow directly from the M theory but there are stringent kinematic constraints d…
Given an algebra with group $G$-action, we construct brace structures for its $G$-twisted Hochschild cochains. An an application, we construct $G$-Frobenius algebras for orbifold Landau-Ginzburg B-models and present explicit orbifold cup product formula for all invertible polynomials.
Many heterotic orbifold models have massless twisted-sector particles with simultaneous E8_1 and E8_2 charges. In the strong-coupling M-theory dual of the heterotic string this poses a paradox: Since the E8_1 and E8_2 live at opposite ends of the x^10 dimension, where could a massless particle with both types of charges possible live? To key to this question are the 5D SCFTs living at the orbifold fixed planes going through the bulk of the M theory. We use dimensional deconstruction to understand how such a 5D SCFT (specifically, the E_0 SCFT at the Z_3 fixed point) works at the superconformal…
The elliptic genera of two-dimensional N=2 superconformal field theories can be twisted by the action of the integral Heisenberg group if their U(1) charges are fractional. The basic properties of the resulting twisted elliptic genera and the associated twisted Witten indices are investigated with due attention to their behaviors in orbifoldization. Our findings are illustrated by and applied to several concrete examples. We give a better understanding of the duality phenomenon observed long before for certain Landau-Ginzburg models. We revisit and prove an old conjecture of Witten which state…
We study the Yukawa couplings among excited twist fields which might arise in the low-energy effective field theory obtained by compactifying the heterotic string on ${\bf Z}_N$ and ${\bf Z}_M\times {\bf Z}_N$ orbifolds.
We consider superstring compactifications where both the classical description, in terms of a Calabi-Yau manifold, and also the quantum theory is known in terms of a Landau-Ginzburg orbifold model. In particular, we study (smooth) Calabi-Yau examples in which there are obstructions to parametrizing all of the complex structure cohomology by polynomial deformations thus requiring the analysis based on exact and spectral sequences. General arguments ensure that the Landau-Ginzburg chiral ring copes with such a situation by having a nontrivial contribution from twisted sectors. Beyond the expecte…
Closed string theories on orbifolds contain both untwisted and twisted states. The latter are normally assumed to live exactly at the orbifold fixed points. We perform a calculation of a gauge field tadpole amplitude and show that off-shell both the twisted and untwisted states give rise to non-trivial momentum profiles over the orbifold C^3/Z_3. These profiles take the form of Gaussian distributions integrated over the fundamental domain of the modular parameter of the torus. The propagators of the internal coordinate fields on the torus world sheet determine the width of the Gaussian profile…
It is shown that $D=4$ $N=1$ SUSY Yang-Mills theory with an appropriate supermultiplet of matter can be twisted on compact Kähler manifold. The conditions of cancellation of anomalies of BRST charge are found. The twisted theory has an appropriate BRST charge. We find a non-trivial set of physical operators defined as classes of the cohomology of this BRST \op . We prove that the physical correlators are independent on external Kähler metric up to a power of a ratio of two Ray-Singer torsions for the Dolbeault cohomology complex on a Kähler manifold. The correlators of local physical \op s tur…
We review the construction of open descendants of the type IIB superstring on the Z-orbifold. It results in a chiral four-dimensional model with gauge group $SO(8) \otimes U(12)$ and three generations of matter in the $(8,12^*)\oplus (1,66)$ representations. As a test of type I - heterotic duality, that reduces to a weak/weak duality in D=4, a heterotic model on the same orbifold is also presented. The massless spectrum reproduces exactly the one found in the type I case apart from additional twisted matter charged with respect to the SO(8) gauge group. The puzzle is solved by noting that at g…
We identify the exactly solvable theory of the conformal fixed point of (0,2) Calabi-Yau sigma-models and their Landau-Ginzburg phases. To this end we consider a number of (0,2) models constructed from a particular (2,2) exactly solvable theory via the method of simple currents. In order to establish the relation between exactly solvable (0,2) vacua of the heterotic string, (0,2) Landau-Ginzburg orbifolds, and (0,2) Calabi-Yau manifolds, we compute the Yukawa couplings in the exactly solvable model and compare the results with the product structure of the chiral ring which we extract from the …
The conjecture that $N=2$ minimal models in two dimensions are critical points of a super-renormalizable Landau-Ginzburg model can be tested by computing the path integral of the Landau-Ginzburg model with certain twisted boundary conditions. This leads to simple expressions for certain characters of the $N=2$ models which can be verified at least at low levels. An $N=2$ superconformal algebra can in fact be found directly in the {\it noncritical} Landau-Ginzburg system, giving further support for the conjecture.
We prove the existence of topological rings in (0,2) theories containing non-anomalous left-moving U(1) currents by which they may be twisted. While the twisted models are not topological, their ground operators form a ring under non-singular OPE which reduces to the (a,c) or (c,c) ring at (2,2) points and to a classical sheaf cohomology ring at large radius, defining a quantum sheaf cohomology away from these special loci. In the special case of Calabi-Yau compactifications, these rings are shown to exist globally on the moduli space if the rank of the holomorphic bundle is less than eight.
Characters of $E_8\otimes E_8$ and SO(32) heterotic strings involving the full internal symmetry Cartan subalgebra generators are defined after circle compactification so that they are T dual. The novel point, as compared with an earlier study of the type II case (hep-th/9707107), is the appearence of Wilson lines. Using SO(17,1) transformations between the weight lattices reveals the existence of an intermediate theory where T duality transformations are disentangled from the internal symmetry. This intermediate theory corresponds to a sort of twisted compactification of a novel type. Its mod…
We discuss R-symmetry in locally supersymmetric $N=2$ gauge theories coupled to hypermultiplets, which can be viewed as effective theories of heterotic string models. In this type of supergravities a suitable R-symmetry exists and can be used to topologically twist the theory. The vector multiplet of the dilaton-axion field has a different R-charge assignment with respect to the other vector multiplets.
We investigate the natural occurence of exponentially small couplings in effective field theories deduced from higher dimensional models. We calculate the coupling between twisted fields of the Z_3 Abelian orbifold compactification of the heterotic string. Due to the propagation of massive Kaluza-Klein modes between the fixed points of the orbifold, the massless twisted fields located at these singular points become weakly coupled. The resulting small couplings have an exponential dependence on the mass of the intermediate states and the distance between the fixed points.
We study D-branes in topologically twisted N=2 minimal models using the Landau-Ginzburg realization. In the cases of A and D-type minimal models we provide what we believe is an exhaustive list of topological branes and compute the corresponding boundary OPE algebras as well as all disk correlators. We also construct examples of topological branes in E-type minimal models. We compare our results with the boundary state formalism, where possible, and find agreement.
We present a new method, exact in $α'$, to explicitly compute string tree-level amplitudes involving one massive state and any number of massless ones. This construction relies on the so-called twisted heterotic string, which admits only gauge multiplets, a gravitational multiplet, and a single massive supermultiplet in its spectrum. In this simplified model, we determine the moduli-space integrand of all amplitudes with one massive state using Berends-Giele currents of the gauge multiplet. These integrands are then straightforwardly mapped to gravitational amplitudes in the twisted heterotic …
We study interacting massive N=(2,2) supersymmetric field theories in two dimensions which arise from deforming conformal field theories with a continuous spectrum. Firstly, we deform N=2 superconformal Liouville theory with relevant operators, and twist the theory into a topological quantum field theory. These theories can be thought of as twisted Landau-Ginzburg models with negative power superpotential. We determine the structure constants of the chiral ring and therefore all correlators of these topological quantum field theories. We provide general formulas for the deformed operators of g…
The moduli spaces of two (0,2) compactifications of the heterotic string can share the same Landau-Ginzburg model even though at large radius they look completely different. It was argued that such a pair of (0,2) models might be connected via a perturbative transition at the Landau-Ginzburg point. Situations of this kind are studied for some explicit models. By calculating the exact dimensions of the generic moduli spaces at large radius, strong indications are found in favor of a different scenario. The two moduli spaces are isomorphic and complex, Kähler and bundle moduli get exchanged.
We test the recently conjectured duality between $N=2$ supersymmetric type II and heterotic string models by analysing a class of higher dimensional interactions in the respective low-energy Lagrangians. These are $F$-terms of the form $F_g W^{2g}$ where $W$ is the gravitational superfield. On the type II side these terms are generated at the $g$-loop level and in fact are given by topological partition functions of the twisted Calabi-Yau sigma model. We show that on the heterotic side these terms arise at the one-loop level. We study in detail a rank 3 example and show that the corresponding …
We find and analyze the Landau-Ginzburg potentials whose critical points determine chiral rings which are exactly the fusion rings of Sp(N)_{K} WZW models. The quasi-homogeneous part of the potential associated with Sp(N)_{K} is the same as the quasi-homogeneous part of that associated with SU(N+1)_{K}, showing that these potentials are different perturbations of the same Grassmannian potential. Twisted N=2 topological Landau-Ginzburg theories are derived from these superpotentials. The correlation functions, which are just the Sp(N)_{K} Verlinde dimensions, are expressed as fusion residues. W…
We investigate the lifting of half-maximal four-dimensional gauged supergravities to compactifications of string theory. It is shown that a class of such supergravities can arise from compactifications of IIA string theory on manifolds of SU(2)-structure which may be thought of as K3 fibrations over T^2. Examples of these SU(2)-structure backgrounds, as smooth K3 bundles and as compactifications with H-flux, are given and we also find evidence for a class of non-geometric, Mirror-fold backgrounds. By applying the duality between IIA string theory on K3 and Heterotic string theory on T^4 fibrew…
The heterotic $E_8\times E_8$ string compactified on an orbifold $T^4/\IZ_N$ has gauge group $G\times G'$ with (massless) states in its twisted sectors which are charged under both gauge group factors. In the dual M-theory on $(T^4/\IZ_N)\otimes(S^1/\IZ_2)$ the two group factors are separated in the eleventh direction and the G and G' gauge fields are confined to the two boundary planes, respectively. We present a scenario which allows for a resolution of this apparent paradox and assigns all massless matter multiplets locally to the different six-dimensional boundary fixed planes. The resolut…
We investigate the implications for fermion mass models in heterotic orbifolds of the modular symmetry mixing twisted states localized at different fixed points. We show that, unlike in the case of continuous gauge symmetries, the mass eigenstates do not mix under the symmetry; thus coupling constants in the low-energy theory are invariant functions of the moduli.
We give a direct proof of the new "product" expression for the Ramond sector characters of N=2 minimal models recently suggested by E. Witten. Our construction allows us to generalize these expressions to the D and E series of N=2 minimal models, as well as to other N=2 Kazama--Suzuki coset models such as $SU(N)\times SO(2(N-1))/SU(N-1)\times U(1)$. We verify that these expressions indeed coincide with the corresponding Landau--Ginzburg "elliptic genus", a certain topologically invariant twisted path integral with the effective Landau--Ginzburg action, which we obtain by using Witten's method.…
We propose a family of differential models for B-type open-closed topological Landau-Ginzburg theories defined by a pair $(X,W)$, where $X$ is any non-compact Calabi-Yau manifold and $W$ is any holomorphic complex-valued function defined on $X$ whose critical set is compact. The models are constructed at cochain level using smooth data, including the twisted Dolbeault algebra of polyvector valued forms and a twisted Dolbeault category of holomorphic factorizations of $W$. We give explicit proposals for cochain level versions of the bulk and boundary traces and for the bulk-boundary and boundar…
In this paper we propose (0,2) mirrors for general Fano toric varieties with special tangent bundle deformations, corresponding to subsets of toric deformations. Our mirrors are of the form of (B/2-twisted) (0,2) Landau-Ginzburg models, matching Hori-Vafa mirrors on the (2,2) locus. We compare our predictions to (0,2) mirrors obtained by Chen et al for certain examples of toric varieties, and find that they match. We also briefly outline conjectures for analogous results for hypersurfaces in Fano toric varieties. Our methods utilize results from supersymmetric localization, which allows us to …
The discovery of integrable $N=2$ supersymmetric Landau-Ginzburg theories whose chiral rings are fusion rings suggests a close connection between fusion rings, the related Landau-Ginzburg superpotentials, and $N=2$ quantum integrability. We examine this connection by finding the natural $SO(N)_K$ analogue of the construction that produced the superpotentials with $Sp(N)_K$ and $SU(N)_K$ fusion rings as chiral rings. The chiral rings of the new superpotentials are not directly the fusion rings of any conformal field theory, although they are natural quotients of the tensor subring of the $SO(N)…
A major problem in discussing heterotic string models is the stabilisation of the many vector bundle moduli via the superpotential generated by world-sheet instantons. In arXiv:1110.6315 we have discussed the method to make a discrete twist in a large and much discussed class of vector bundles such that the generation number gets new contributions (which can be tuned suitably) and at the same time the space of bundle moduli of the new, twisted bundle is a proper subspace (where the 'new', non-generic twist class exists) of the original bundle moduli space; one thus gets a model, closely relate…
Considering the gauge field and its dual in heterotic string theory as a unified field, we show that the equations of motion at the rational level contain a twisted differential with a novel degree seven twist. This generalizes the usual degree three twist that lifts to twisted K-theory and raises the natural question of whether at the integral level the abelianized gauge fields belong to a generalized cohomology theory. Some remarks on possible such extension are given.
We extend Witten's discussion of actions related to the Landau-Ginzburg description of Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces in weighted projective spaces to cover the mirror class of models that include twisted chiral matter multiplets and a newly discovered 2D, N = 2 twisted vector multiplet. Certain integrability obstructions are observed that constrain the most general constructions containing both matter and twisted matter simultaneously. It is conjectured that knot invariants will ultimately play a role in describing the most general such model.
One of the open problems in understanding (0,2) mirror symmetry concerns the construction of Toda-like Landau-Ginzburg mirrors to (0,2) theories on Fano spaces. In this paper, we begin to fill this gap by making an ansatz for (0,2) Toda-like theories mirror to (0,2) supersymmetric nonlinear sigma models on products of projective spaces, with deformations of the tangent bundle, generalizing a special case previously worked out for P1xP1. We check this ansatz by matching correlation functions of the B/2-twisted Toda-like theories to correlation functions of corresponding A/2-twisted nonlinear si…
The thermal duality of E(8) x E(8) and SO(32) heterotic string theories may underpin a mechanism that would convert the kinetic energy of infalling matter during gravitational collapse to form a region of a hot string phase that would expel gravitational gradients. This phase would be the continuation of a Ginzburg-Landau like superconductor in the Euclidean regime. In this scenario, there would be no event horizon or singularity produced in gravitational collapse. Solutions are presented for excitations of the string vacuum that may form during gravitational collapse and drive the transition …
We reconsider the issue of localization in open-closed B-twisted Landau-Ginzburg models with arbitrary Calabi-Yau target. Through careful analsysis of zero-mode reduction, we show that the closed model allows for a one-parameter family of localization pictures, which generalize the standard residue representation. The parameter $λ$ which indexes these pictures measures the area of worldsheets with $S^2$ topology, with the residue representation obtained in the limit of small area. In the boundary sector, we find a double family of such pictures, depending on parameters $λ$ and $μ$ which measur…
