The interplay between vibrational modes and Kondo physics is a fundamental aspect of transport properties of correlated molecular conductors. We present theoretical results for a single molecule in the Kondo regime connected to left and right metallic leads, creating the usual coupling to a conduction channel with left-right parity ("even"). A center-of-mass vibrational mode introduces an additional, phonon-assisted, tunneling through the antisymmetric ("odd") channel. A non-Fermi liquid fixed point, reminiscent of the two-channel Kondo effect, appears at a critical value of the phonon-mediated coupling strength. Our numerical renormalization-group calculations for this system reveal non-Fermi-liquid behavior at low temperatures over lines of critical points. Signatures of this strongly correlated state are prominent in the thermodynamic properties and in the linear conductance.
Dynamical tunneling systems have been proposed earlier to display a two-channel Kondo effect, the orbital index of the particle playing the role of a pseudospin in the equivalent Kondo problem, and the spin being a silent channel index. However, as shown recently by Aleiner et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 86, 2629 (2001)], the predicted two-channel Kondo behavior can never be observed in the weak coupling regime, where the tunneling induced splitting of the levels of the tunneling system always dominates the physics. Here we show that the above scenario changes completely if the conduction electrons …
We study a system of an impurity spin coupled to a junction of several Tomonaga-Luttinger liquids using a renormalization group scheme. For the decoupled S-matrix at the junction, there is a range of Kondo couplings which flow to a multi-channel fixed point for repulsive inter-electron interactions; this is associated with a characteristic temperature dependence of the spin-flip scatterings. If the junction is governed by the Griffiths S-matrix, the Kondo couplings flow to a strong coupling fixed point where all the wires are decoupled.
We study the local density of states (LDOS) in systems of Luttinger-liquid nanowires connected to a common mesoscopic superconducting island, in which Majorana bound states give rise to different types of topological Kondo effects. We show that electron interactions enhance the low-energy LDOS in the leads close to the island, with unusual exponents due to Kondo physics that can be probed in tunneling experiments.
We review our recent studies on the Kondo effect in the tunneling phenomena through quantum dot systems. Numerical methods to calculate reliable tunneling conductance are developed. In the first place, a case in which electrons of odd number occupy the dot is studied, and experimental results are analyzed based on the calculated result. Tunneling anomaly in the even-number-electron occupation case, which is recently observed in experiment and is ascribed to the Kondo effect in the spin singlet-triplet cross over transition region, is also examined theoretically.
It is shown that the resonance Kondo tunneling through a double quantum dot (DQD) with even occupation and singlet ground state may arise at a strong bias, which compensates the energy of singlet/triplet excitation. Using the renormalization group technique we derive scaling equations and calculate the differential conductance as a function of an auxiliary dc-bias for parallel DQD.
We show that through an interdot off-site electron correlation in a double quantum-dot (DQD) device, Kondo resonances emerge in the local density of states without the electron spin-degree of freedom. We identify the physical mechanism behind this phenomenon: rather than forming a spin singlet in the device as required in the conventional Kondo physics, we found that exchange of electron position between the two quantum dots, together with the off-site Coulomb interaction, are sufficient to induce the Kondo resonance. Due to peculiar co-tunneling events, the Kondo resonance in one dot may be p…
When a cerocene molecule is chemisorbed on metallic substrate, or when an asymmetric double dot is hybridized with itinerant electrons, its singlet ground state crosses its lowly excited triplet state, leading to a competition between the Zhang-Rice mechanism of singlet-triplet splitting in a confined cluster and the Kondo effect (which accompanies the tunneling through quantum dot under a Coulomb blockade restriction). The rich physics of an underscreened S=1 Kondo impurity in the presence of low-lying triplet/singlet excitations is exposed. Estimates of the magnetic susceptibility and the el…
Non - equilibrium tunneling current of an Anderson impurity system subject to both constant and alternating electric fields is studied. A time - dependent Schrieffer - Wolff transformation maps the time - dependent Anderson Hamiltonian onto a Kondo one. Perturbation expansion in powers of the Kondo coupling strength is carried out up to third order, yielding a remarkably simple analytical expression for the tunneling current. It is found that the zero - bias anomaly is suppressed by an ac - field. Both dc and the first harmonic are equally enhanced by the Kondo effect, while the higher harmoni…
We investigate transport through a mononuclear transition-metal complex with strong tunnel coupling to two electrodes. The ground state of this molecule is a singlet while the first excited state is a triplet. We show that a modulation of the tunnel-barrier due to a molecular distortion which couples to the tunneling induces a Kondo-effect, provided the discrete vibrational energy compensates the singlet/triplet gap. We discuss the single-phonon and two-phonon assisted co-tunneling and possible experimental realization of the theory.
The Kondo effect in the system consisting of a magnetic adatom on the graphene is studied. By using the non-equilibrium Green function method with the slave-boson mean field approximation, the local density of state (LDOS) and the conductance are calculated. For a doped graphene, the Kondo phase is present at all time. Surprisingly, two kinds of Kondo regimes are revealed. But for the undoped graphene, the Kondo phase only exists if the adatom's energy level is beyond a critical value. The conductance is similar to the LDOS, thus, the Kondo peak in the LDOS can be observed with the scanning tu…
We theoretically analyze a state-of-the-art experimental method based on a combination of electron spin resonance and scanning tunneling microscopy (ESR-STM), to directly probe the spin fluctuations in the Kondo effect. The Kondo impurity is exchange coupled to the probe spin, and the ESR-STM setup detects the small level shifts in the probe spin induced by the spin fluctuations of the Kondo impurity. We use the open quantum system approach by regarding the probe spin as the "system" and the Kondo impurity spin as the fluctuating "bath" to evaluate the resonance line shifts in terms of the dyn…
We study a system consisting of a junction of N quantum wires, where the junction is characterized by a scalar S-matrix, and an impurity spin is coupled to the electrons close to the junction. The wires are modeled as weakly interacting Tomonaga-Luttinger liquids. We derive the renormalization group equations for the Kondo couplings of the spin to the electronic modes on different wires, and analyze the renormalization group flows and fixed points for different values of the initial Kondo couplings and of the junction S-matrix (such as the decoupled S-matrix and the Griffiths S-matrix). We gen…
The concept of dynamical symmetries is used for formulation of the renormalization group approach to the Kondo effect in the Anderson model with repulsive and attractive interaction $U$. It is shown that the generic local symmetry of the Anderson Hamiltonian is determined by the SU(4) Lie group. The Anderson Hamiltonian is rewritten in terms of the Gell-Mann matrices of the 4-th rank, which form the set of group generators and the basis for construction of irreducible vector operators describing the excitation spectra in the charge and spin sectors. The multistage Kondo sceening is described i…
We investigate the scattering off dilute magnetic impurities placed on the surface of three-dimensional topological insulators. In the low-temperature limit, the impurity moments are Kondo-screened by the surface-state electrons, despite their exotic locking of spin and momentum. We determine signatures of the Kondo effect appearing in quasiparticle interference (QPI) patterns as recorded by scanning tunneling spectroscopy, taking into account the full energy dependence of the T matrix as well as the hexagonal warping of the surface Dirac cones. We identify a universal energy dependence of the…
We investigate the dynamical and transport features of a Kondo dot side-coupled to a topological superconductor (TS). The Majorana fermion states (MFS) formed at the ends of the TS are found to be able to alter the Kondo physics profoundly: For the ideal setup where the MFS do not overlap ($ε_m=0$) a finite dot-MFS coupling $(Γ_m)$ reduces the unitary-limit value of the linear conductance by exactly a factor 3/4 in the Kondo-dominant regime $(Γ_m<T_K)$, where $T_K$ is the Kondo temperature. In the Majorana-fermion dominant phase ($Γ_m>T_K)$, on the other hand, the spin-split Kondo resonance ta…
We present a large-N theory for the differential conductance, dI/dV, in Kondo systems measured via scanning tunneling spectroscopy. We demonstrate that quantum interference between tunneling processes into the conduction band and into the magnetic f-electron states is crucial in determining the experimental Fano lineshape of dI/dV. This allows one to uniquely extract the Kondo coupling and the ratio of the tunneling amplitudes from the experimental dI/dV curve. Finally, we show that dI/dV directly reflects the strength of the antiferromagnetic interaction in Kondo lattice systems.
We study the Kondo effect of a single magnetic adatom on the surface of graphene. It was shown that the unique linear dispersion relation near the Dirac points in graphene makes it more easy to form the local magnetic moment, which simply means that the Kondo resonance can be observed in a more wider parameter region than in the metallic host. The result indicates that the Kondo resonance indeed can form ranged from the Kondo regime, to the mixed valence, even to the empty orbital regime. While the Kondo resonance displays as a sharp peak in the first regime, it has a peak-dip structure and/or…
We theoretically study the nonequilibrium thermoelectric transport properties of a strongly-correlated molecule (or quantum dot) embedded in a tunnel junction. Assuming that the coupling of the molecule to the contacts is asymmetric, we determine the nonlinear current driven by the voltage and temperature gradients by using the perturbation theory. However, the subsystem consisting of the molecule strongly coupled to one of the contacts is solved by using the numerical renormalization group method, which allows for accurate description of Kondo correlations. We study the temperature gradient a…
We describe the mechanism of charge-spin transformation in a double quantum dot (DQD) with even occupation, where a time dependent gate voltage v(t) is applied to one of its two valleys, whereas the other one is coupled to the source and drain electrodes. The Kondo tunneling regime under strong Coulomb blockade may be realized when the spin spectrum of the DQD is formed by the ground state spin triplet and two singlet excitations. Charge fluctuations induced by v(t) result in transitions within the spin multiplet characterized by the SO(5) dynamical symmetry group. In a weakly non-adiabatic re…
A mapping between fractional quantum Hall (FQH) junctions and the two-channel Kondo model is presented. We discuss in detail this relation for the particular case of a junction of a FQH state at $ν= 1/3$ and a normal metal. We show that in the strong coupling regime this junction has a non-Fermi liquid fixed point. At this fixed point the electron Green's function has a branch cut, and the entropy has a non-zero value equal to $S={1/2} \ln{2}$. We construct the space of perturbations at the strong coupling fixed point and find that the dimensions of the tunneling operator is 1/2. These behavio…
Kondo-type zero-bias anomalies have been frequently observed in quantum dots occupied by two electrons and attributed to a spin-triplet configuration that may become stable under particular circumstances. Conversely, zero-bias anomalies have been so far quite elusive when quantum dots are occupied by an even number of electrons greater than two, even though a spin-triplet configuration is more likely to be stabilized there than for two electrons. We propose as an origin of this phenomenon the spin-orbit interaction, and we show how it profoundly alters the conventional Kondo screening scenario…
The observation of the Kondo effect in mesoscopic systems under bias$^{1,2}$ has opened a new chapter in the physics of the Kondo phenomenon. Various types of $dI/dV$, where $I$ and $V$ denote current and source-drain (s-d) bias, respectively, line shapes have been measured by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM)$^{1,3-11}$. However, explanation by single Fano line shape$^{1,12-16}$ is not relevant and even misleading. Here, we provide consistent explanations for various asymmetric and symmetric line shapes in terms of a microscopic theory that shows the creation of two resonant tunneling level…
Phonon-assisted electronic tunnelings through a vibrating quantum dot embedded between normal and superconducting leads are studied in the Kondo regime. In such a hybrid device, with the bias applied to the normal lead, we find a series of Kondo sidebands separated by half a phonon energy in the differential conductance, which are distinct from the phonon-assisted sidebands previously observed in the conventional Andreev tunnelings and in systems with only normal leads. These Kondo sidebands originate from the Kondo-Andreev cooperative cotunneling mediated by phonons, which exhibit a novel Kon…
Quantum spin tunneling (QST) and Kondo effect are two very different quantum phenomena that produce the same effect on quantized spins, namely, the quenching of their magnetization. However, the nature of this quenching is very different so that QST and Kondo effects compete with each other. Importantly, both QST and Kondo produce very characteristic features in the spectral function that can be measured by means of single spin scanning tunneling spectroscopy that makes it possible to probe the crossover from one regime to the other. We model this crossover, and the resulting changes in transp…
A low-temperature scanning tunneling microscope was employed to study the differential conductance in an atomic junction formed by an adsorbed Co atom on a Cu(100) surface and a copper-covered tip. A zero-bias anomaly (ZBA) reveals spin scattering off the Co atom, which is assigned to a Kondo effect. The ZBA exhibits a characteristic asymmetric lineshape when electrons tunnel between tip and sample, while upon the tip-Co contact it symmetrizes and broadens. Through density functional theory calculations and the non-equilibrium non-crossing approximation we show that the lineshape broadening is…
We report on a novel Kondo phenomenon of interacting quantum dots coupled asymmetrically to a normal and a superconducting lead. The effects of intradot Coulomb interaction and Andreev tunneling give rise to Andreev bound resonances. As a result, a new type of co-tunneling process which we term Andreev-normal co-tunneling, is predicted. At low temperatures, coherent superposition of these co-tunneling processes induces a Kondo effect in which Cooper pairs directly participate formation of a spin singlet, leading to four Kondo resonance peaks in the local density of states, and enhancing the tu…
We present gate-dependent transport measurements of Kondo impurities in bare gold break junctions, generated with high yield using an electromigration process that is actively controlled. Thirty percent of measured devices show zero-bias conductance peaks. Temperature dependence suggests Kondo temperatures \~7K. The peak splitting in magnetic field is consistent with theoretical predictions for g=2, though in many devices the splitting is offset from 2guB by a fixed energy. The Kondo resonances observed here may be due to atomic-scale metallic grains formed during electromigration.
We study electron transport through C60 molecules in the Kondo regime using a mechanically controllable break junction. By varying the electrode spacing, we are able to change both the width and height of the Kondo resonance, indicating modification of the Kondo temperature and the relative strength of coupling to the two electrodes. The linear conductance as a function of T/T_K agrees with the scaling function expected for the spin-1/2 Kondo problem. We are also able to tune finite-bias Kondo features which appear at the energy of the first C60 intracage vibrational mode.

We study a Majorana island coupled to a bulk superconductor via a Josephson junction and to multiple external normal leads. In the absence of the Josephson coupling, the system displays a topological Kondo state, which had been largely studied recently. However, we find that this state is unstable even to small Josephson coupling, which instead leads at low temperature $T$ to a new fixed point. Most interesting is the case of three external leads, forming a minimal electronic realization of the long sought two-channel Kondo effect. While the $T=0$ conductance corresponds to simple resonant And…
System of two quantum dots attached to external electrodes is considered theoretically in orbital Kondo regime. In general, the double dot system is coupled via both Coulomb interaction and direct hoping. Moreover, the indirect hopping processes between the dots (through the leads) are also taken into account. To investigate system's electronic properties we apply slave-boson mean field (SBMF) technique. With help of the SBMF approach the local density of states for both dots and the transmission (as well as linear and differencial conductance) is calculated. We show that Dicke- and Fano-like …
We investigate the spin Seebeck effect and spin pumping in a junction between a ferromagnetic insulator and a magnetic impurity deposited on a normal metal. By the numerical renormalization group calculation, we show that spin current is enhanced by the Kondo effect. This spin current is suppressed by increase of the temperature or the magnetic field which is comparable with the Kondo temperature. Our results indicate that spin transport can be a direct probe of spin excitation in strongly correlated systems.
We investigate theorerically the non-equilibrium transport through a molecular quantum dot as a function of gate and bias voltage, taking into account the typical situation in molecular electronics. In this respect, our study includes asymmetries both in the capacitances and tunneling rates to the source and drain electrodes, as well as an infinitely large charging energy on the molecule. Our calculations are based on the out-of-equilibrium Non-Crossing-Approximation (NCA), which is a reliable technique in the regime under consideration. We find that Coulomb blockade edges and Kondo peaks disp…
We present a powerful and general approach to describe the coupling of Majorana fermions to external leads, of interacting or non-interacting electrons. Our picture has the Klein factors of bosonization appearing as extra Majoranas hybridizing with the physical ones. We demonstrate the power of this approach by solving a highly nontrivial SO(M) Kondo problem arising in topological superconductors with M Majorana-lead couplings, allowing for arbitrary M and for conduction electron interactions. We find that these topological Kondo problems give rise to robust non-Fermi liquid behavior, even for…
Incorporating relativistic physics into quantum tunneling can lead to exotic behavior such as perfect transmission via Klein tunneling. Here, we probe the tunneling properties of spin-momentum locked relativistic fermions by designing and implementing a tunneling geometry that utilizes nanowires of the topological Kondo insulator candidate, SmB6. The nanowires are attached to the end of scanning tunneling microscope tips, and used to image the bicollinear stripe spin-order in the antiferromagnet Fe1.03Te with a Neel temperature of ~50 K. The antiferromagnetic stripes become invisible above 10 …
Magnetic adsorbates on superconductors induce a Kondo resonance outside and Yu-Shiba-Rusinov (YSR) bound states inside the superconducting energy gap. When probed by scanning tunneling spectroscopy, the associated differential-conductance spectra frequently exhibit characteristic bias-voltage asymmetries. Here, we observe correlated variations of Kondo and YSR asymmetries across an Fe-porphyrin molecule adsorbed on Pb(111). We show that both asymmetries originate in interfering tunneling paths via a spin-carrying orbital and the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO). Strong evidence for th…
We propose to study the transport through tunneling-coupled double quantum dots (DQDs) connected in series to leads, using the finite-$U$ slave-boson mean field approach developed initially by Kotliar and Ruckenstein [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 57}, 1362 (1986)]. This approach treats the dot-lead coupling and the inter-dot tunnelling $t$ nonperturbatively at arbitrary Coulomb correlation $U$, thus allows the anti-ferromagnetic exchange coupling parameter $J=4t^2/U$ to appear naturally. We find that, with increasing the inter-dot hopping, the DQDs manifest three distinct physical scenarios: the Kond…
The tunneling conductances of a quantum point contact and a magnetized atom adsorbed on an insulating layer above a metallic substrate are obtained by considering the coherent transport of the entangled and nonentangled Kondo singlets, and these are compared with the experimental results. Spins of the entangled Kondo singlet flow unidirectionally in a sequential up-and-down manner. This transport does not follow linear response theory. The nonentangled Kondo singlet performs resonant tunneling through a coherent transport channel and yields coherent side peaks at a finite bias. The coherent tr…
Scanning tunneling miscoscopy is one of the most powerful spectroscopic tools for single-electron excitations. We show that the conductance fluctuations, or noise in the conductance, of a tunneling current into an interacting electron system is dominated by density-density and spin-spin correlations. This allows one to probe two-particle properties (susceptibilities) and collective excitations by standard experimental tunneling methods. We demonstrate this theoretically, using a novel many-body calculation for the multi-center Kondo problem, including both direct and indirect exchange between …
We have measured the differential conductances $G(V,T)$ in several Al/AlO$_{x}$/Sc planar tunnel junctions between 2 and 35 K. As the temperature decreases to $\sim$ 16 K, the zero-bias conductance $G(0,T)$ crosses over from a standard $-$ln$T$ dependence to a novel $- \sqrt{T}$ dependence. Correspondingly, the finite bias conductance $G(V,T)$ reveals a two-channel Kondo scaling behavior between $\sim$ 4 and 16 K. The observed two-channel Kondo physics is ascribed to originating from a few localized spin-$\frac12$ Sc atoms situated slightly inside the AlO$_x$/Sc interface.
Transport through molecular magnets is studied in the regime of strong coupling to the leads. We consider a resonant-tunneling model where the electron spin in a quantum dot or molecule is coupled to an additional local, anisotropic spin via exchange interaction. The two opposite regimes dominated by resonant tunneling and by Kondo transport, respectively, are considered. In the resonant-tunneling regime, the stationary state of the impurity spin is calculated for arbitrarily strong molecule-lead coupling using a master-equation approach, which treats the exchange interaction perturbatively. W…
Molecular electronics offers unique scientific and technological possibilities, resulting from both the nanometre scale of the devices and their reproducible chemical complexity. Two fundamental yet different effects, with no classical analogue, have been demonstrated experimentally in single-molecule junctions: quantum interference due to competing electron transport pathways, and the Kondo effect due to entanglement from strong electronic interactions. Here we unify these phenomena, showing that transport through a spin-degenerate molecule can be either enhanced or blocked by Kondo correlati…
We study the nonequilibrium transport through a quantum dot coupled to normal and superconducting leads. We use the modified second-order perturbation theory to calculate the differential conductance and the local density of states at the quantum dot. In the strong but finite Coulomb interaction regime, the differential conductance shows an anomalous peak not at a zero bias voltage but at a finite bias voltage. We also observe an additional Kondo resonance besides the normal one in the local density of states, where the former is caused by nonequilibrium Andreev tunneling via the normal Kondo …
We consider electromechanical properties of a single-electronic device consisting of movable quantum dot attached to a vibrating cantilever, forming a tunnel contact with a non-movable source electrode. We show that the resonance Kondo tunneling of electrons amplify exponentially the strength of nanoelectromechanical (NEM) coupling in such device and makes the latter to be insensitive to mesoscopic fluctuations of electronic levels in a nano-dot. It is also shown that the study of Kondo-NEM phenomenon provides an additional (as compared with a standard conductance measurements in a non-mechani…
We investigate the bias dependence of the tunneling conductance between a spin-polarized (SP) scanning tunneling microscope (STM) tip and the surface conduction states of a normal metal with a Kondo adatom. Quantum interference between tip-host metal and tip-adatom-host metal conduction paths is studied in the full range of the Fano parameter $q$. The spin-polarized STM gives rise to a splitting of the Kondo peak and asymmetry in the zero-bias anomaly depending on the lateral tip-adatom distance. For increasing lateral distances, the Kondo peak-splitting shows a strong suppression and the spin…
Based on a no-equilibrium STM model, we study Kondo resonance on a surface by self-consistent calculations. The shapes of tunneling spectra are dependent on the energy range of tunneling electrons. Our results show that both energy-cutoff and energy-window of tunneling electrons have significant influence on the shapes of tunneling spectra. If no energy-cutoff is used, the Kondo resonances in tunneling spectrum are peaks with the same shapes in the density of state of absorbed magnetic atoms. This is just the prediction of Tersoff theory. If we use an energy cutoff to remove high-energy lectro…
We probe the high frequency emission of a carbon nanotube based Josephson junction and compare it to its DC Josephson current. The AC emission is probed by coupling the carbon nanotube to an on-chip detector (a Superconductor-Insulator-Superconductor junction), via a coplanar waveguide resonator. The measurement of the photo-assisted current of the detector gives direct access to the signal emitted by the carbon nanotube. We focus on the gate regions that exhibit Kondo features in the normal state and demonstrate that when the DC supercurrent is enhanced by the Kondo effect, the AC Josephson e…
The charging of a quantum box, coupled to a lead by tunneling through a single resonant level, is studied near the degeneracy points of the Coulomb blockade. Combining Wilson's numerical renormalization-group method with perturbative scaling approaches, the corresponding low-energy Hamiltonian is solved for arbitrary temperatures, gate voltages, tunneling rates, and energies of the impurity level. Similar to the case of a weak tunnel barrier, the shape of the charge step is governed at low temperatures by the non-Fermi-liquid fixed point of the two-channel Kondo effect. However, the associated…
Electron transport through parallel double quantum dot system with interdot tunneling and strong on-site Coulomb interaction is studied in the Kondo regime by using the finite-$U$ slave boson technique. For a system of quantum dots with degenerate energy levels, the linear conductance reaches the unitary limit ($2e^2/h$) due to the Kondo effect at low temperature when the interdot tunneling is absent. As the interdot tunneling amplitude increases, the conductance decreases in the singly occupied regime and a conductance plateau structure appears. In the crossover to the doubly occupied regime,…
We study the Kondo temperature ($T_K$) of a single molecule break junction. By employing a numerical renormalization group calculations we have found that $T_K$ depends dramatically upon the position of the molecule in the wire formed between the contacts. We show that $T_K$ exhibits strong \emph{oscillations} when the parity of the left {and/or} right number of atomic sites ($N_L,N_R$) is changed. For a given set of parameters, the maximum value of $T_K$ occurs for ($odd, odd$) combination, while its minimum values is observed for ($even, even$). These oscillations are fully understood in terms…
We report measurements of the nonlinear conductance of InAs nanowire quantum dots coupled to superconducting leads. We observe a clear alternation between odd and even occupation of the dot, with sub-gap-peaks at $|V_{sd}|=Δ/e$ markedly stronger(weaker) than the quasiparticle tunneling peaks at $|V_{sd}|=2Δ/e$ for odd(even) occupation. We attribute the enhanced $Δ$-peak to an interplay between Kondo-correlations and Andreev tunneling in dots with an odd number of spins, and substantiate this interpretation by a poor man's scaling analysis.
We report on our theoretical study of the inverse TMR effect in the spin polarized transport through a narrow channel. In the weak tunneling limit, we find the ordinary positive TMR. The TMR changes its sign as the transmission probability becomes large close to a unity. Our results might be relevant to the magnetic tunnel junction with a pinhole or a quantum point contact.
We discuss the change of the Kondo effect in the Josephson junction formed by the indirect coupling between a one-dimensional \emph{DIII}-class topological and s-wave superconductors via a quantum dot. By performing the Schrieffer-Wolff transformation, we find that the single-electron occupation in the quantum dot induces various correlation modes, such as the Kondo and singlet-triplet correlations between the quantum dot and the $s$-wave superconductor and the spin exchange correlation between the dot and Majorana doublet. Moreover, it plays a nontrivial role in modifying the Josephson effect…
We investigate the charge fluctuations of a grain (large dot) coupled to a lead via a small quantum dot in the Kondo regime. We show that the strong entanglement of charge and spin flips in this setup can result in a stable SU(4) Kondo fixed point, which considerably smears out the Coulomb staircase behavior already in the weak tunneling limit. This behavior is robust enough to be experimentally observable.
A quantum dot with spin-orbit interaction can work as an efficient spin filter if it is connected to N (> 2) external leads via tunnel barriers. When an unpolarized current is injected to a quantum dot from a lead, polarized currents are ejected to other leads. A two-level quantum dot is examined as a minimal model. First, we show that the spin polarization is markedly enhanced by resonant tunneling when the level spacing in the dot is smaller than the level broadening. Next, we examine the many-body resonance induced by the Kondo effect in the Coulomb blockade regime. A large spin current is …
Inelastic effects in the Coulomb blockade and Kondo regimes of electron transport through molecular junctions are considered within a simple nonequilibrium equation-of-motion (EOM) approach. The scheme is self-consistent, and can qualitatively reproduce the main experimental observations of vibrational features in Coulomb blockade [H.Park et al., Nature 407, 57 (2000)] and Kondo [L.H.Yu et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 93, 266802 (2004)] regimes. Considerations similar to the equilibrium EOM approach by Meir et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 66, 3048 (1991); ibid. 70, 2601 (1993)] are used on the Keldysh conto…
Recently, it has been shown that magnetic tunnel junctions with thin MgO tunnel barriers exhibit extraordinarily high tunneling magnetoresistance (TMR) values at room temperature1, 2. However, the physics of spin dependent tunneling through MgO barriers is only beginning to be unravelled. Using planar magnetic tunnel junctions in which ultra-thin layers of magnetic metals are deposited in the middle of a MgO tunnel barrier here we demonstrate that the TMR is strongly modified when these layers are discontinuous and composed of small pancake shaped nanodots. At low temperatures, in the Coulomb …
