Kondo-type zero-bias anomalies have been frequently observed in quantum dots occupied by two electrons and attributed to a spin-triplet configuration that may become stable under particular circumstances. Conversely, zero-bias anomalies have been so far quite elusive when quantum dots are occupied by an even number of electrons greater than two, even though a spin-triplet configuration is more likely to be stabilized there than for two electrons. We propose as an origin of this phenomenon the spin-orbit interaction, and we show how it profoundly alters the conventional Kondo screening scenario in the simple case of a laterally confined quantum dot with four electrons.
Dynamical tunneling systems have been proposed earlier to display a two-channel Kondo effect, the orbital index of the particle playing the role of a pseudospin in the equivalent Kondo problem, and the spin being a silent channel index. However, as shown recently by Aleiner et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 86, 2629 (2001)], the predicted two-channel Kondo behavior can never be observed in the weak coupling regime, where the tunneling induced splitting of the levels of the tunneling system always dominates the physics. Here we show that the above scenario changes completely if the conduction electrons …
We have studied the influence of microwave radiation on the transport properties of a semiconductor quantum dot in the Kondo regime. In the entire frequency range tested (10--50 GHz), the Kondo resonance vanishes by increasing the microwave power. This suppression of the Kondo resonance shows an unexpected scaling behavior. No evidence for photon-sideband formation is found. The comparison with temperature-dependence measurements indicates that radiation-induced spin dephasing plays an important role in the suppression of the Kondo effect.
We study the local density of states (LDOS) in systems of Luttinger-liquid nanowires connected to a common mesoscopic superconducting island, in which Majorana bound states give rise to different types of topological Kondo effects. We show that electron interactions enhance the low-energy LDOS in the leads close to the island, with unusual exponents due to Kondo physics that can be probed in tunneling experiments.
We review our recent studies on the Kondo effect in the tunneling phenomena through quantum dot systems. Numerical methods to calculate reliable tunneling conductance are developed. In the first place, a case in which electrons of odd number occupy the dot is studied, and experimental results are analyzed based on the calculated result. Tunneling anomaly in the even-number-electron occupation case, which is recently observed in experiment and is ascribed to the Kondo effect in the spin singlet-triplet cross over transition region, is also examined theoretically.
It is shown that the resonance Kondo tunneling through a double quantum dot (DQD) with even occupation and singlet ground state may arise at a strong bias, which compensates the energy of singlet/triplet excitation. Using the renormalization group technique we derive scaling equations and calculate the differential conductance as a function of an auxiliary dc-bias for parallel DQD.
We show that through an interdot off-site electron correlation in a double quantum-dot (DQD) device, Kondo resonances emerge in the local density of states without the electron spin-degree of freedom. We identify the physical mechanism behind this phenomenon: rather than forming a spin singlet in the device as required in the conventional Kondo physics, we found that exchange of electron position between the two quantum dots, together with the off-site Coulomb interaction, are sufficient to induce the Kondo resonance. Due to peculiar co-tunneling events, the Kondo resonance in one dot may be p…
When a cerocene molecule is chemisorbed on metallic substrate, or when an asymmetric double dot is hybridized with itinerant electrons, its singlet ground state crosses its lowly excited triplet state, leading to a competition between the Zhang-Rice mechanism of singlet-triplet splitting in a confined cluster and the Kondo effect (which accompanies the tunneling through quantum dot under a Coulomb blockade restriction). The rich physics of an underscreened S=1 Kondo impurity in the presence of low-lying triplet/singlet excitations is exposed. Estimates of the magnetic susceptibility and the el…
We apply our recently developed, selfconsistent renormalization group (RG) method to STM spectra of a two-impurity Kondo system consisting of two cobalt atoms connected by a one-dimensional Cu chain on a Cu surface. This RG method was developed to describe local spin screening in multi-impurity Kondo systems in presence of the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) interaction. Using the RKKY interaction of a one-dimensional chain, we explain the experimentally observed suppression and oscillation of the Kondo temperature, $T_K(y)$, as a function of the length of the chain and the corresponding …
Non - equilibrium tunneling current of an Anderson impurity system subject to both constant and alternating electric fields is studied. A time - dependent Schrieffer - Wolff transformation maps the time - dependent Anderson Hamiltonian onto a Kondo one. Perturbation expansion in powers of the Kondo coupling strength is carried out up to third order, yielding a remarkably simple analytical expression for the tunneling current. It is found that the zero - bias anomaly is suppressed by an ac - field. Both dc and the first harmonic are equally enhanced by the Kondo effect, while the higher harmoni…
We investigate transport through a mononuclear transition-metal complex with strong tunnel coupling to two electrodes. The ground state of this molecule is a singlet while the first excited state is a triplet. We show that a modulation of the tunnel-barrier due to a molecular distortion which couples to the tunneling induces a Kondo-effect, provided the discrete vibrational energy compensates the singlet/triplet gap. We discuss the single-phonon and two-phonon assisted co-tunneling and possible experimental realization of the theory.
The Kondo effect in the system consisting of a magnetic adatom on the graphene is studied. By using the non-equilibrium Green function method with the slave-boson mean field approximation, the local density of state (LDOS) and the conductance are calculated. For a doped graphene, the Kondo phase is present at all time. Surprisingly, two kinds of Kondo regimes are revealed. But for the undoped graphene, the Kondo phase only exists if the adatom's energy level is beyond a critical value. The conductance is similar to the LDOS, thus, the Kondo peak in the LDOS can be observed with the scanning tu…
We theoretically analyze a state-of-the-art experimental method based on a combination of electron spin resonance and scanning tunneling microscopy (ESR-STM), to directly probe the spin fluctuations in the Kondo effect. The Kondo impurity is exchange coupled to the probe spin, and the ESR-STM setup detects the small level shifts in the probe spin induced by the spin fluctuations of the Kondo impurity. We use the open quantum system approach by regarding the probe spin as the "system" and the Kondo impurity spin as the fluctuating "bath" to evaluate the resonance line shifts in terms of the dyn…
The concept of dynamical symmetries is used for formulation of the renormalization group approach to the Kondo effect in the Anderson model with repulsive and attractive interaction $U$. It is shown that the generic local symmetry of the Anderson Hamiltonian is determined by the SU(4) Lie group. The Anderson Hamiltonian is rewritten in terms of the Gell-Mann matrices of the 4-th rank, which form the set of group generators and the basis for construction of irreducible vector operators describing the excitation spectra in the charge and spin sectors. The multistage Kondo sceening is described i…
We study the transport properties of a quantum dot embedded in an Aharonov-Bohm ring in the presence of spin-orbit interactions. Using a numerical renormalization group analysis of the system in the Kondo regime, we find that the competition of Aharonov-Bohm and spin-orbit dynamical phases induces a strong suppression of the Kondo state singlet, somewhat akin to an effective intrinsic magnetic field in the system. This effective field breaks the spin degeneracy of the localized state and produces a finite magnetic moment in the dot. By introducing an {\em in-plane} Zeeman field we show that th…
We investigate the scattering off dilute magnetic impurities placed on the surface of three-dimensional topological insulators. In the low-temperature limit, the impurity moments are Kondo-screened by the surface-state electrons, despite their exotic locking of spin and momentum. We determine signatures of the Kondo effect appearing in quasiparticle interference (QPI) patterns as recorded by scanning tunneling spectroscopy, taking into account the full energy dependence of the T matrix as well as the hexagonal warping of the surface Dirac cones. We identify a universal energy dependence of the…
The interplay between vibrational modes and Kondo physics is a fundamental aspect of transport properties of correlated molecular conductors. We present theoretical results for a single molecule in the Kondo regime connected to left and right metallic leads, creating the usual coupling to a conduction channel with left-right parity ("even"). A center-of-mass vibrational mode introduces an additional, phonon-assisted, tunneling through the antisymmetric ("odd") channel. A non-Fermi liquid fixed point, reminiscent of the two-channel Kondo effect, appears at a critical value of the phonon-mediate…
We present a large-N theory for the differential conductance, dI/dV, in Kondo systems measured via scanning tunneling spectroscopy. We demonstrate that quantum interference between tunneling processes into the conduction band and into the magnetic f-electron states is crucial in determining the experimental Fano lineshape of dI/dV. This allows one to uniquely extract the Kondo coupling and the ratio of the tunneling amplitudes from the experimental dI/dV curve. Finally, we show that dI/dV directly reflects the strength of the antiferromagnetic interaction in Kondo lattice systems.
We study the Kondo effect of a single magnetic adatom on the surface of graphene. It was shown that the unique linear dispersion relation near the Dirac points in graphene makes it more easy to form the local magnetic moment, which simply means that the Kondo resonance can be observed in a more wider parameter region than in the metallic host. The result indicates that the Kondo resonance indeed can form ranged from the Kondo regime, to the mixed valence, even to the empty orbital regime. While the Kondo resonance displays as a sharp peak in the first regime, it has a peak-dip structure and/or…
We describe the mechanism of charge-spin transformation in a double quantum dot (DQD) with even occupation, where a time dependent gate voltage v(t) is applied to one of its two valleys, whereas the other one is coupled to the source and drain electrodes. The Kondo tunneling regime under strong Coulomb blockade may be realized when the spin spectrum of the DQD is formed by the ground state spin triplet and two singlet excitations. Charge fluctuations induced by v(t) result in transitions within the spin multiplet characterized by the SO(5) dynamical symmetry group. In a weakly non-adiabatic re…
The observation of the Kondo effect in mesoscopic systems under bias$^{1,2}$ has opened a new chapter in the physics of the Kondo phenomenon. Various types of $dI/dV$, where $I$ and $V$ denote current and source-drain (s-d) bias, respectively, line shapes have been measured by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM)$^{1,3-11}$. However, explanation by single Fano line shape$^{1,12-16}$ is not relevant and even misleading. Here, we provide consistent explanations for various asymmetric and symmetric line shapes in terms of a microscopic theory that shows the creation of two resonant tunneling level…
Phonon-assisted electronic tunnelings through a vibrating quantum dot embedded between normal and superconducting leads are studied in the Kondo regime. In such a hybrid device, with the bias applied to the normal lead, we find a series of Kondo sidebands separated by half a phonon energy in the differential conductance, which are distinct from the phonon-assisted sidebands previously observed in the conventional Andreev tunnelings and in systems with only normal leads. These Kondo sidebands originate from the Kondo-Andreev cooperative cotunneling mediated by phonons, which exhibit a novel Kon…
Quantum spin tunneling (QST) and Kondo effect are two very different quantum phenomena that produce the same effect on quantized spins, namely, the quenching of their magnetization. However, the nature of this quenching is very different so that QST and Kondo effects compete with each other. Importantly, both QST and Kondo produce very characteristic features in the spectral function that can be measured by means of single spin scanning tunneling spectroscopy that makes it possible to probe the crossover from one regime to the other. We model this crossover, and the resulting changes in transp…
A low-temperature scanning tunneling microscope was employed to study the differential conductance in an atomic junction formed by an adsorbed Co atom on a Cu(100) surface and a copper-covered tip. A zero-bias anomaly (ZBA) reveals spin scattering off the Co atom, which is assigned to a Kondo effect. The ZBA exhibits a characteristic asymmetric lineshape when electrons tunnel between tip and sample, while upon the tip-Co contact it symmetrizes and broadens. Through density functional theory calculations and the non-equilibrium non-crossing approximation we show that the lineshape broadening is…
The interplay between the coupling of an interacting quantum dot to a conduction band and its connection to localized levels has been studied in a triple quantum dot arrangement. The electronic Dicke effect, resulting from quasi-resonant states of two side-coupled non-interacting quantum dots, is found to produce important effects on the Kondo resonance of the interacting dot. We study in detail the Kondo regime of the system by applying a numerical renormalization group analysis to a finite-U multi-impurity Anderson Hamiltonian model. We find an extreme narrowing of the Kondo resonance, as th…
We report on a novel Kondo phenomenon of interacting quantum dots coupled asymmetrically to a normal and a superconducting lead. The effects of intradot Coulomb interaction and Andreev tunneling give rise to Andreev bound resonances. As a result, a new type of co-tunneling process which we term Andreev-normal co-tunneling, is predicted. At low temperatures, coherent superposition of these co-tunneling processes induces a Kondo effect in which Cooper pairs directly participate formation of a spin singlet, leading to four Kondo resonance peaks in the local density of states, and enhancing the tu…

System of two quantum dots attached to external electrodes is considered theoretically in orbital Kondo regime. In general, the double dot system is coupled via both Coulomb interaction and direct hoping. Moreover, the indirect hopping processes between the dots (through the leads) are also taken into account. To investigate system's electronic properties we apply slave-boson mean field (SBMF) technique. With help of the SBMF approach the local density of states for both dots and the transmission (as well as linear and differencial conductance) is calculated. We show that Dicke- and Fano-like …
We investigate theorerically the non-equilibrium transport through a molecular quantum dot as a function of gate and bias voltage, taking into account the typical situation in molecular electronics. In this respect, our study includes asymmetries both in the capacitances and tunneling rates to the source and drain electrodes, as well as an infinitely large charging energy on the molecule. Our calculations are based on the out-of-equilibrium Non-Crossing-Approximation (NCA), which is a reliable technique in the regime under consideration. We find that Coulomb blockade edges and Kondo peaks disp…
Incorporating relativistic physics into quantum tunneling can lead to exotic behavior such as perfect transmission via Klein tunneling. Here, we probe the tunneling properties of spin-momentum locked relativistic fermions by designing and implementing a tunneling geometry that utilizes nanowires of the topological Kondo insulator candidate, SmB6. The nanowires are attached to the end of scanning tunneling microscope tips, and used to image the bicollinear stripe spin-order in the antiferromagnet Fe1.03Te with a Neel temperature of ~50 K. The antiferromagnetic stripes become invisible above 10 …
Magnetic adsorbates on superconductors induce a Kondo resonance outside and Yu-Shiba-Rusinov (YSR) bound states inside the superconducting energy gap. When probed by scanning tunneling spectroscopy, the associated differential-conductance spectra frequently exhibit characteristic bias-voltage asymmetries. Here, we observe correlated variations of Kondo and YSR asymmetries across an Fe-porphyrin molecule adsorbed on Pb(111). We show that both asymmetries originate in interfering tunneling paths via a spin-carrying orbital and the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO). Strong evidence for th…
We report our study of the I-V curves in the transport through the quantum dot when an additional quantum dot lying in the Kondo regime is side-connected to it. Due to the Kondo scattering off the effective spin on a side-connected quantum dot the conductance is suppressed at low temperatures and at low source-drain bias voltages. This zero-bias anomaly is understood as enhanced Kondo scattering with decreasing temperature.
We demonstrate that the external irradiation brings decoherence in the spin states of the quantum dot. This effect cuts off the Kondo anomaly in conductance even at zero temperature. We evaluate the dependence of the DC conductance in the Kondo regime on the power of irradiation, this dependence being determined by the decoherence.
We propose to study the transport through tunneling-coupled double quantum dots (DQDs) connected in series to leads, using the finite-$U$ slave-boson mean field approach developed initially by Kotliar and Ruckenstein [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 57}, 1362 (1986)]. This approach treats the dot-lead coupling and the inter-dot tunnelling $t$ nonperturbatively at arbitrary Coulomb correlation $U$, thus allows the anti-ferromagnetic exchange coupling parameter $J=4t^2/U$ to appear naturally. We find that, with increasing the inter-dot hopping, the DQDs manifest three distinct physical scenarios: the Kond…
The tunneling conductances of a quantum point contact and a magnetized atom adsorbed on an insulating layer above a metallic substrate are obtained by considering the coherent transport of the entangled and nonentangled Kondo singlets, and these are compared with the experimental results. Spins of the entangled Kondo singlet flow unidirectionally in a sequential up-and-down manner. This transport does not follow linear response theory. The nonentangled Kondo singlet performs resonant tunneling through a coherent transport channel and yields coherent side peaks at a finite bias. The coherent tr…
Scanning tunneling miscoscopy is one of the most powerful spectroscopic tools for single-electron excitations. We show that the conductance fluctuations, or noise in the conductance, of a tunneling current into an interacting electron system is dominated by density-density and spin-spin correlations. This allows one to probe two-particle properties (susceptibilities) and collective excitations by standard experimental tunneling methods. We demonstrate this theoretically, using a novel many-body calculation for the multi-center Kondo problem, including both direct and indirect exchange between …
Transport through molecular magnets is studied in the regime of strong coupling to the leads. We consider a resonant-tunneling model where the electron spin in a quantum dot or molecule is coupled to an additional local, anisotropic spin via exchange interaction. The two opposite regimes dominated by resonant tunneling and by Kondo transport, respectively, are considered. In the resonant-tunneling regime, the stationary state of the impurity spin is calculated for arbitrarily strong molecule-lead coupling using a master-equation approach, which treats the exchange interaction perturbatively. W…
We study the nonequilibrium transport through a quantum dot coupled to normal and superconducting leads. We use the modified second-order perturbation theory to calculate the differential conductance and the local density of states at the quantum dot. In the strong but finite Coulomb interaction regime, the differential conductance shows an anomalous peak not at a zero bias voltage but at a finite bias voltage. We also observe an additional Kondo resonance besides the normal one in the local density of states, where the former is caused by nonequilibrium Andreev tunneling via the normal Kondo …
We consider electromechanical properties of a single-electronic device consisting of movable quantum dot attached to a vibrating cantilever, forming a tunnel contact with a non-movable source electrode. We show that the resonance Kondo tunneling of electrons amplify exponentially the strength of nanoelectromechanical (NEM) coupling in such device and makes the latter to be insensitive to mesoscopic fluctuations of electronic levels in a nano-dot. It is also shown that the study of Kondo-NEM phenomenon provides an additional (as compared with a standard conductance measurements in a non-mechani…
We investigate the bias dependence of the tunneling conductance between a spin-polarized (SP) scanning tunneling microscope (STM) tip and the surface conduction states of a normal metal with a Kondo adatom. Quantum interference between tip-host metal and tip-adatom-host metal conduction paths is studied in the full range of the Fano parameter $q$. The spin-polarized STM gives rise to a splitting of the Kondo peak and asymmetry in the zero-bias anomaly depending on the lateral tip-adatom distance. For increasing lateral distances, the Kondo peak-splitting shows a strong suppression and the spin…
Based on a no-equilibrium STM model, we study Kondo resonance on a surface by self-consistent calculations. The shapes of tunneling spectra are dependent on the energy range of tunneling electrons. Our results show that both energy-cutoff and energy-window of tunneling electrons have significant influence on the shapes of tunneling spectra. If no energy-cutoff is used, the Kondo resonances in tunneling spectrum are peaks with the same shapes in the density of state of absorbed magnetic atoms. This is just the prediction of Tersoff theory. If we use an energy cutoff to remove high-energy lectro…
The charging of a quantum box, coupled to a lead by tunneling through a single resonant level, is studied near the degeneracy points of the Coulomb blockade. Combining Wilson's numerical renormalization-group method with perturbative scaling approaches, the corresponding low-energy Hamiltonian is solved for arbitrary temperatures, gate voltages, tunneling rates, and energies of the impurity level. Similar to the case of a weak tunnel barrier, the shape of the charge step is governed at low temperatures by the non-Fermi-liquid fixed point of the two-channel Kondo effect. However, the associated…
The peculiar behavior of Kondo peak splitting under a magnetic field and bias can be explained by calculating the nonequilibrium retarded Green's function via the nonperturbative dynamical theory (NDT). In the NDT, the application of a lead-dot-lead system reveals that new resonant tunneling levels are activated near the Fermi level and the conventional Kondo peak at the Fermi level diminishes when a bias is applied. Magnetic field causes asymmetry in the spectral density and transforms the new resonant peak into a major peak whose behavior explains all the features of the nonequilibrium Kondo…
Electron transport through parallel double quantum dot system with interdot tunneling and strong on-site Coulomb interaction is studied in the Kondo regime by using the finite-$U$ slave boson technique. For a system of quantum dots with degenerate energy levels, the linear conductance reaches the unitary limit ($2e^2/h$) due to the Kondo effect at low temperature when the interdot tunneling is absent. As the interdot tunneling amplitude increases, the conductance decreases in the singly occupied regime and a conductance plateau structure appears. In the crossover to the doubly occupied regime,…
We report measurements of the nonlinear conductance of InAs nanowire quantum dots coupled to superconducting leads. We observe a clear alternation between odd and even occupation of the dot, with sub-gap-peaks at $|V_{sd}|=Δ/e$ markedly stronger(weaker) than the quasiparticle tunneling peaks at $|V_{sd}|=2Δ/e$ for odd(even) occupation. We attribute the enhanced $Δ$-peak to an interplay between Kondo-correlations and Andreev tunneling in dots with an odd number of spins, and substantiate this interpretation by a poor man's scaling analysis.
We theoretically analyze contributions from the Kondo effect to the spin polarization and spin diffusion length in all-metal nonlocal spin valves. Interdiffusion of ferromagnetic atoms into the normal metal layer creates a region in which Kondo physics plays a significant role, giving discrepancies between experiment and existing theory. We start from a simple model and construct a modified spin drift-diffusion equation which clearly demonstrates how the Kondo physics not only suppresses the electrical conductivity but even more strongly reduces the spin diffusion length. We also present an ex…
We investigate the charge fluctuations of a grain (large dot) coupled to a lead via a small quantum dot in the Kondo regime. We show that the strong entanglement of charge and spin flips in this setup can result in a stable SU(4) Kondo fixed point, which considerably smears out the Coulomb staircase behavior already in the weak tunneling limit. This behavior is robust enough to be experimentally observable.
Magnetically-doped topological insulators are intensely studied in the search for exotic phenomena such as the quantum anomalous Hall effect. The interplay of electronic and impurity degrees of freedom leads to the Kondo effect, an increase in the resistivity at temperatures $T < T_K$, the Kondo temperature. We study this effect in chiral surface state transport at $T \ge T_K$ in the metallic regime, starting from the quantum Liouville equation and including Kondo scattering to all orders, as well as phonon and non-magnetic impurity scattering. Unlike spin-orbit coupled metals and semiconducto…
The tunneling conductance is calculated as a function of the gate voltage in wide temperature range for the single quantum dot systems with Coulomb interaction. We assume that two orbitals are active for the tunneling process. We show that the Kondo temperature for each orbital channel can be largely different. The tunneling through the Kondo resonance almost fully develops in the region $T \lsim 0.1 T_{K}^{*} \sim 0.2 T_{K}^{*}$, where $T_{K}^{*}$ is the lowest Kondo temperature when the gate voltage is varied. At high temperatures the conductance changes to the usual Coulomb oscillations typ…
A quantum dot with spin-orbit interaction can work as an efficient spin filter if it is connected to N (> 2) external leads via tunnel barriers. When an unpolarized current is injected to a quantum dot from a lead, polarized currents are ejected to other leads. A two-level quantum dot is examined as a minimal model. First, we show that the spin polarization is markedly enhanced by resonant tunneling when the level spacing in the dot is smaller than the level broadening. Next, we examine the many-body resonance induced by the Kondo effect in the Coulomb blockade regime. A large spin current is …
We investigate the electronic transport through a molecule in the Kondo regime. The tunneling between the electrode and the molecule is asymmetrically modulated by the oscillations of the molecule, i.e., if the molecule gets closer to one of the electrodes the tunneling to that electrode will increase while for the other electrode it will decrease. The system is described by a two-channel Anderson model with phonon-assisted hybridization, which is solved with the Wilson numerical renormalization group method. The results for several functional forms of tunneling modulation are presented. For a…
We develop a consistent method for calculating non-equilibrium Green's functions for a nano-sized dot coupled to electron reservoirs by tunneling. The leads are generally at different chemical potentials (non-equilibrium), and the dot may be a single molecule characterized by its own vibrational frequency $\wph$. We carry out a Keldysh functional analysis of the effective Green's functions of the local electron in the dot, and also of the vibration mode, in the Kondo regime. Finally, the tunneling current is calculated as a function of bias using non-equilibrium Green's function. We find stepw…
We present exact results on the non-equilibrium current fluctuations for 2 quantum dots in series throughout a crossover from non-Fermi liquid to Fermi liquid behavior described by the 2 impurity Kondo model. The result corresponds to resonant tunneling of carriers of charge $2e$ for a critical inter-impurity coupling. At low energy scales, the result can be understood from a Fermi liquid approach that we develop and use to also study non-equilibrium transport in an alternative double dot realization of the 2 impurity Kondo model under current experimental study.
Recently, it has been shown that magnetic tunnel junctions with thin MgO tunnel barriers exhibit extraordinarily high tunneling magnetoresistance (TMR) values at room temperature1, 2. However, the physics of spin dependent tunneling through MgO barriers is only beginning to be unravelled. Using planar magnetic tunnel junctions in which ultra-thin layers of magnetic metals are deposited in the middle of a MgO tunnel barrier here we demonstrate that the TMR is strongly modified when these layers are discontinuous and composed of small pancake shaped nanodots. At low temperatures, in the Coulomb …
The possibility for a two-channel Kondo ($2CK$) non Fermi liquid state to appear in a metal as a result of the interaction between electrons and movable structural defects is revisited. As usual, the defect is modeled by a heavy particle moving in an almost symmetric double-well potential (DWP). Taking into account only the two lowest states in DWP is known to lead to a Kondo-like Hamiltonian with rather low Kondo temperature, $T_K$. We prove that, in contrast to previous believes, the contribution of higher excited states in DWP does not enhance $T_K$. On the contrary, $T_K$ is reduced by thr…
Quantum critical behavior in the two-impurity Kondo model requires the distinct separation of two scales, T_K >> T*, where T_K is the Kondo temperature and T* is the scale at which the system renormalizes away from the quantum critical point to a stable Fermi liquid fixed point. We provide a derivation of T* based on the renormalization group to lowest order. This result is confirmed by a numerical renormalization group (NRG) analysis which supplements the analytic derivation with additional quantitative precision. The form of the low-energy Fermi liquid fixed point is derived and subsequently…
We clarify the difference between entangled and nonentangled two-reservoir mesoscopic Kondo systems and reveal the reason why theories using the Keldysh formalism, quantum Monte Carlo calculations, and the renormalization group approaches cannot explain the line shapes of tunneling conductance of mesoscopic Kondo systems measured by using a two-terminal setup but explain those of a three-terminal setup. We emphasize that the previous theories study a nonentangled system, while real two-reservoir mesoscopic Kondo systems are entangled systems in which two reservoirs are within the coherent regi…
We review recent work on resonant Andreev tunneling through a strongly interacting quantum dot connected to a normal and to a superconducting lead. We derive a general expression for the current flowing in the structure and discuss the linear and non-linear transport in the nonperturbative regime. New effects associated to the Kondo resonance combined with the two-particle tunneling arise. The Kondo anomaly in the $I-V$ characteristics depends on the relative size of the gap energy and the Kondo temperature.
We study the effect of a pure spin current on the Kondo singlet in a diluted magnetic alloy using non-local lateral spin valve structures with highly spin polarized Co2FeSi electrodes. Temperature dependence of the non-local spin signals shows a sharp reduction with decreasing temperature, followed by a plateau corresponding to the low temperature Fermi liquid regime below the Kondo temperature (TK). The spin diffusion length of the Kondo alloy is found to increase with the evolution of spin accumulation. The results are in agreement with the intuitive description that the Kondo singlet cannot…
We investigate the thermopower due to the orbital Kondo effect in a single quantum dot system by means of the noncrossing approximation. It is elucidated how the asymmetry of tunneling resonance due to the orbital Kondo effect affects the thermopower under gate-voltage and magnetic-field control.
