We investigate the bias dependence of the tunneling conductance between a spin-polarized (SP) scanning tunneling microscope (STM) tip and the surface conduction states of a normal metal with a Kondo adatom. Quantum interference between tip-host metal and tip-adatom-host metal conduction paths is studied in the full range of the Fano parameter $q$. The spin-polarized STM gives rise to a splitting of the Kondo peak and asymmetry in the zero-bias anomaly depending on the lateral tip-adatom distance. For increasing lateral distances, the Kondo peak-splitting shows a strong suppression and the spin-polarized conductance exhibits the standard Fano-Kondo profile.
We theoretically investigate the spin-resolved local density of states (SR-LDOS) of a spin-polarized two-dimensional electron gas in the presence of a Kondo adatom and a STM probe. Using Green function formalism and the atomic approach in the limit of infinite Coulomb correlation, it is found an analytical SR-LDOS expression in the low temperature regime of the system. This formal result is given in terms of phase shifts originated by the adatom scattering and Fano interference. The SR-LDOS is investigated as a function of the probe position and different Fano factors. Our findings provide an …
We theoretically investigate the thermoelectric properties of a spin-polarized two-dimensional electron gas hosting a Kondo adatom hybridized with an STM tip. Such a setup is treated within the single-impurity Anderson model in combination with the atomic approach for the Green's functions. Due to the spin dependence of the Fermi wavenumbers the electrical and thermal conductances, together with thermopower and Lorenz number reveal beating patterns as function of the STM tip position in the Kondo regime. In particular, by tuning the lateral displacement of the tip with respect to the adatom vi…
We have studied the effect of dynamical correlations on the electronic structure of single Co adatoms on graphene monolayers with a recently developed novel method for nanoscopic materials that combines density functional calculations with a fully dynamical treatment of the strongly interacting 3d-electrons. The coupling of the Co 3d-shell to the graphene substrate and hence the dynamic correlations are strongly dependent on the orbital symmetry and the system parameters (temperature, distance of the adatom from the graphene sheet, gate voltage). When the Kondo effect takes place, we find that…
We present a theoretical study for the scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) spectra of surface-supported magnetic nanostructures, incorporating strong correlation effects. As concrete examples, we study Co and Mn adatoms on the Cu(111) surface, which are expected to represent the opposite limits of the Kondo physics and local moment behavior, using a combination of density functional theory and both quantum Monte Carlo and exact diagonalization impurity solvers. We examine in detail the effects of temperature $T$, correlation strength $U$, and the impurity $d$ electron occupancy $N_d$ on the lo…
We study the Kondo effect of a single magnetic adatom on the surface of graphene. It was shown that the unique linear dispersion relation near the Dirac points in graphene makes it more easy to form the local magnetic moment, which simply means that the Kondo resonance can be observed in a more wider parameter region than in the metallic host. The result indicates that the Kondo resonance indeed can form ranged from the Kondo regime, to the mixed valence, even to the empty orbital regime. While the Kondo resonance displays as a sharp peak in the first regime, it has a peak-dip structure and/or…
We consider the magnetic interaction of manganese phtalocyanine (MnPc) absorbed on Pb layers which were grown on a Si substrate. We perform an ab-initio calculation of the density of states and Kondo temperature as function of the number of Pb monolayers. Comparison to experimental data [Phys. Rev. Lett. 99, 256601 (2007)] then allows us to determine the exchange coupling constant J between the spins of the adsorbed molecules and those of the Pb host. This approach gives rise to a general and reliable method for obtaining J, by combining experimental and numerical results.
We study spin-dependent conductance in a system composed of a ferromagnetic (FM) Scanning Tunneling Microscope (STM) tip coupled to a metallic host surface with an adatom. The Kondo resonance is taken into account via the Doniach-Sunjic spectral function. For short lateral tip-adatom distances and due to the interplay between Kondo physics, quantum interfering effects and the ferromagnetism of the tip, a spin-splitting of the Fano-Kondo line shape arises in the conductance. A strong enhancement of the Fano-Kondo profile for the majority spin component of the FM tip is observed. When the tip is…
We discuss theoretically the local density of states (LDOS) of a graphene sheet hosting two distant adatoms located at the center of the hexagonal cells. By putting laterally a Scanning Tunneling Microscope (STM) tip over a carbon atom, two remarkable novel effects can be detected: i) a multilevel structure in the LDOS and ii) beating patterns in the induced LDOS. We show that both phenomena occur nearby the Dirac points and are highly anisotropic. Furthermore, we propose conductance experiments employing STM as a probe for the observation of such exotic manifestations in the LDOS of graphene …
Motivated by recent STM experiments, we explore the magnetic field induced Kondo effect that takes place at symmetry protected level crossings in finite Co adatom chains. We argue that the effective two-level system realized at a level crossing acts as an extended impurity coupled to the conduction electrons of the substrate by a distribution of Kondo couplings at the sites of the chain. Using auxiliary-field quantum Monte Carlo simulations, which quantitatively reproduce the field dependence of the zero-bias signal, we show that a proper Kondo resonance is present at the sites where the effec…
We consider a spin-1/2 Heisenberg chain coupled via a Kondo interaction to two-dimensional Dirac fermions. The Kondo interaction is irrelevant at the \textit{decoupled} fixed-point, leading to the existence of a Kondo-breakdown phase and a Kondo-breakdown critical point separating such a phase from a heavy Fermi liquid. We reach this conclusion on the basis of a renormalization group analysis, large-N calculations as well as extensive auxiliary-field quantum Monte Carlo simulations. We extract quantities such as the zero-bias tunneling conductance which will be relevant to future experiments i…
A comprehensive theory is presented for the voltage, temperature, and spatial dependence of the tunneling current between a scanning tunneling microscope (STM) tip and a metallic surface with an individual magnetic adatom. Modeling the adatom by a nondegenerate Anderson impurity, a general expression is derived for a weak tunneling current in terms of the dressed impurity Green function, the impurity-free surface Green function, and the tunneling matrix elements. This generalizes Fano's analysis to the interacting case. The differential-conductance lineshapes seen in recent STM experiments wit…
The conduction electron density of states nearby a single magnetic impurity, as measured recently by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), is calculated. It is shown that the Kondo effect induces a narrow Fano resonance as an intrinsic feature in the conduction electron density of states. The line shape varies with the distance between STM tip and impurity, in qualitative agreement with experiments, and is sensitive to details of the band structure. For a Co impurity the experimentally observed width and shift of the Kondo resonance are in accordance with those obtained from a combination of ba…
Low-temperature scanning tunneling spectroscopy reveals that the Kondo temperature T_K of Co atoms adsorbed on Cu/Co/Cu(100) multilayers varies between 60 K and 134 K as the Cu film thickness decreases from 20 to 5 atomic layers. The observed change of T_K is attributed to a variation of the density of states at the Fermi level ρ_F induced by quantum well states confined to the Cu film. A model calculation based on the quantum oscillations of ρ_F at the belly and the neck of the Cu Fermi surface reproduces most of the features in the measured variation of T_K.
We report density functional theory plus exact diagonalization of the multi-orbital Anderson impurity model calculations for the Co adatom on the top of Cu(001) surface. For the Co atom $d$-shell occupation $n_d \approx$ 8, a singlet many-body ground state and Kondo resonance are found, when the spin-orbit coupling is included in the calculations. The differential conductance is evaluated in a good agreement with the scanning tuneling microscopy measurements. The results illustrate the essential role which the spin-orbit coupling is playing in a formation of Kondo singlet for the multi-orbital…
The Kondo temperature $T_K$ of single Co adatoms on monolayers of Ag on Cu and Au(111) is determined using Scanning Tunneling Spectroscopy. $T_K$ of Co on a single monolayer of Ag on either substrate is essentially the same as that of Co on a homogenous Ag(111) crystal. This gives strong evidence that the interaction of surface Kondo impurities with the substrate is very local in nature. By comparing $T_K$ found for Co on Cu, Ag, and Au (111)-surfaces we show that the energy scale of the many-electron Kondo state is insensitive to the properties of surface states and to the energetic position …
We consider the theory of Kondo effect and Fano factor energy dependence for magnetic impurity (Co) on graphene. We have performed a first principles calculation and find that the two dimensional $E_1$ representation made of $d_{xz},d_{yz}$ orbitals is likely to be responsible for the hybridization and ultimately Kondo screening for cobalt on graphene. There are few high symmetry sites where magnetic impurity atom can be adsorbed. For the case of Co atom in the middle of hexagon of carbon lattice we find anomalously large Fano $q$-factor, $q\approx 80$ and strongly suppressed coupling to condu…
Using a numerically exact first-principles many-body approach, we revisit the "prototypical" Kondo case of a cobalt impurity on copper. Even though this is considered a well understood example of the Kondo effect, we reveal an unexpectedly strong dependence of the screening properties on the parametrization of the local Coulomb tensor. As a consequence, the Kondo temperature can vary by orders of magnitude depending on the complexity of the parametrization of the electron-electron interaction. Further, we challenge the established picture of a spin-$1$ moment involving two cobalt $d$-orbitals …
We investigate the orbital origin of the Fano-Kondo line shapes measured in STM spectroscopy of magnetic adatoms on metal substrates. To this end we calculate the low-bias tunnel spectra of a Co adatom on the (001) and (111) Cu surfaces with our density functional theory-based ab initio transport scheme augmented by local correlations. In order to associate different $d$-orbitals with different Fano line shapes we only correlate individual $3d$-orbitals instead of the full Co $3d$-shell. We find that Kondo peaks arising in different $d$-levels indeed give rise to different Fano features in the…
The Kondo zero bias anomaly of Co adatoms probed by scanning tunneling microscopy is known to depend on the height of the tip above the surface, and this dependence is different on different low index Cu surfaces. On the (100) surface, the Kondo temperature first decreases then increases as the tip approaches the adatom, while on the (111) surface it is virtually unaffected. These trends are captured by combined density functional theory and numerical renormalization group (DFT+NRG) calculations. The adatoms are found to be described by an S = 1 Anderson model on both surfaces, and ab initio c…
We examine the exchange Hamiltonian for magnetic adatoms in graphene with localized inner shell states. On symmetry grounds, we predict the existence of a class of orbitals that lead to a distinct class of quantum critical points in graphene, where the Kondo temperature scales as $T_{K}\propto|J-J_{c}|^{1/3}$ near the critical coupling $J_{c}$, and the local spin is effectively screened by a \emph{super-ohmic} bath. For this class, the RKKY interaction decays spatially with a fast power law $\sim1/R^{7}$. Away from half filling, we show that the exchange coupling in graphene can be controlled …
The Kondo effect in the system consisting of a magnetic adatom on the graphene is studied. By using the non-equilibrium Green function method with the slave-boson mean field approximation, the local density of state (LDOS) and the conductance are calculated. For a doped graphene, the Kondo phase is present at all time. Surprisingly, two kinds of Kondo regimes are revealed. But for the undoped graphene, the Kondo phase only exists if the adatom's energy level is beyond a critical value. The conductance is similar to the LDOS, thus, the Kondo peak in the LDOS can be observed with the scanning tu…
We study theoretically the Kondo effect for a magnetic adatom on graphene using the Anderson model.Upon obtaining the Green's function of the impurity to higher order contributions in the hybridization, we calculated analytically the selfenergy in the presence of strong correlations. It is found that the Kondo resonance takes place in a narrow energy range of the impurity level around the Fermi energy which can be tuned by a gate voltage. We show that this range is linear in the Fermi energy $|μ|$ and is significantly narrower than in the case for a normal metal. The origin of this behavior is tr…
Clusters of magnetic atoms lying on a metallic substrate can exhibit Kondo effect due to the exchange interaction with mobile electrons in the metal, which can be observed in STM measurements. The same interaction results in the induced RKKY interaction between the magnetic moments in the cluster. For different geometries of the cluster, it can enhance or suppress Kondo-correlations. We calculate the tunneling density of states for trimer clusters of different geometries and reveal the signatures of competition between the Kondo effect and RKKY interaction that can be seen in STM experiments.
We present a theory for spin-polarized scanning tunneling microscopy (SP-STM) of a Kondo impurity on an unpolarized metallic substrate. The spin polarization of the SP-STM breaks the spin symmetry of the Kondo system, similar to an applied magnetic field, leading to a splitting of the Abrikosov-Suhl-Kondo resonance. The amount of splitting is controlled by the strength of the coupling between the impurity and the SP-STM tip and also the overall spin polarization of the SP-STM.
The problem of three interacting Kondo impurities is solved within a numerically exact continuous time quantum Monte Carlo scheme. A suppression of the Kondo resonance by interatomic exchange interactions for different cluster geometries is investigated. It is shown that a drastic difference between the Heisenberg and Ising cases appears for antiferromagnetically coupled adatoms. The effects of magnetic frustrations in the adatom trimer are investigated, and possible connections with available experimental data are discussed.
Compounds within the hexaboride class of materials exhibit a wide variety of interesting physical phenomena, including polaron formation and quadrupolar order. In particular, SmB$_6$ has recently drawn attention as it is considered a prototypical topological Kondo insulator. Evidence in favor of this concept, however, has proven experimentally difficult and controversial, partly because of the required temperatures and energy resolution. Here, a powerful tool is Scanning Tunneling Microscopy (STM) with its unique ability to give local, microscopic information that directly relates to the one-p…
The conduction electron density of states nearby single magnetic impurities, as measured recently by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), is calculated, taking into account tunneling into conduction electron states only. The Kondo effect induces a narrow Fano resonance in the conduction electron density of states, while scattering off the d-level generates a weakly energy dependent Friedel oscillation. The line shape varies with the distance between STM tip and impurity, in qualitative agreement with experiments, but is very sensitive to details of the band structure. For a Co impurity the exp…
We explore theoretically the density of states (LDOS) probed by an STM tip of 2D systems hosting an adatom and a subsurface impurity, both capacitively coupled to AFM tips and traversed by antiparallel magnetic fields. Two kinds of setups are analyzed, a monolayer of graphene and a two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG). The AFM tips set the impurity levels at the Fermi energy, where two contrasting behaviors emerge: the Fano factor for the graphene diverges, while in the 2DEG it approaches zero. As result, the spin-degeneracy of the LDOS is lifted exclusively in the graphene system, in particular…
Motivated by recent scanning tunneling microscope (STM) experiments on cobalt clusters adsorbed on single wall metallic nanotubes [Odom {\em et al.}, Science {\bf 290}, 1549 (2000)], we study theoretically the size dependence of STM spectra and spin-flip scattering of electrons from finite size ferromagnetic clusters adsorbed on metallic surfaces. We study two models of nanometer size ferromagnets: (i) An itinerant model with delocalized s, p and d electrons and (ii) a local moment model with both localized d-level spins and delocalized cluster electrons. The effective exchange coupling betwee…
Based on the experimental observation, that only the close vicinity of a magnetic impurity at metal surfaces determines its Kondo behaviour, we introduce a simple model which explains the Kondo temperatures observed for cobalt adatoms at the (111) and (100) surfaces of Cu, Ag, and Au. Excellent agreement between the model and scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS) experiments is demonstrated. The Kondo temperature is shown to depend on the occupation of the d-level determined by the hybridization between adatom and substrate with a minimum around single occupancy.
A detailed analysis of the Kondo effect of a magnetic impurity in a zigzag graphene nanoribbon is addressed. An adatom is coupled to the graphene nanoribbon via a hybridization amplitude $Γ_{imp}$ in a hollow or top site configuration. In addition, the adatom is also weakly coupled to a metallic STM tip by a hybridization function $Γ_{tip}$ that provides a Kondo screening of its magnetic moment. The entire system is described by an Anderson-like Hamiltonian whose low-temperature physics is accessed by employing the numerical renormalization group approach, which allows us to obtain the thermod…
We theoretically analyze a state-of-the-art experimental method based on a combination of electron spin resonance and scanning tunneling microscopy (ESR-STM), to directly probe the spin fluctuations in the Kondo effect. The Kondo impurity is exchange coupled to the probe spin, and the ESR-STM setup detects the small level shifts in the probe spin induced by the spin fluctuations of the Kondo impurity. We use the open quantum system approach by regarding the probe spin as the "system" and the Kondo impurity spin as the fluctuating "bath" to evaluate the resonance line shifts in terms of the dyn…
We study the role of the onset of Shockley states, $D_s$, belonging to (111) surfaces of Cu, Ag and Au in the Kondo effect when a magnetic impurity is deposited on them. When $D_s$ approaches to the Fermi level, $E_F$, thing that can be done by compressing (stretching) the metallic sample, we found that most of the thermodynamic and dynamic properties of the impurity are affected in a non trivial way. We model the system by a generic Anderson impurity model and solve it by using the numerical renormalization group, NRG, technique. In particular, the impurity contribution to magnetic susceptibi…
We consider the screening of an impurity moment in a d-wave superconductor under the influence of a Zeeman magnetic field. Using the Numerical Renormalization Group technique, we investigate the resulting pseudogap Kondo problem, in particular the field-induced crossover behavior in the vicinity of the zero-field boundary quantum phase transition. The impurity spectral function and the resulting changes in the local host density of states are calculated, giving specific predictions for high-field STM measurements on impurity-doped cuprates.
According to the Phys. Rev. B 84, 201308(R) (2011), an isolated Majorana state bound to one edge of a long enough Kitaev chain in the topological phase and connected to a quantum dot, results in a robust transmittance of $1/2$ at zero-bias. In this work, we show that the removal of such a hallmark can be achieved by using a metallic surface hosting two adatoms in a scenario where there is a lack of symmetry in the Fano effect, which is feasible by coupling the Kitaev chain to one of these adatoms. Thus in order to detect this feature experimentally, one should apply the following two-stage pro…
We present a theory for recent STM studies of Zn impurities in the superconductor BSCCO, using insights from NMR experiments which show that there is a net S=1/2 moment on the Cu ions near the Zn. We argue that the Kondo spin dynamics of this moment is the origin of the low bias peak in the differential conductance, rather than a resonance in a purely potential scattering model. The spatial and energy dependence of the STM spectra of our model can also fit the experiments.
The magnetic coupling between single Co atoms adsorbed on a copper surface is determined by probing the Kondo resonance using low-temperature scanning tunneling spectroscopy. The Kondo resonance, which is due to magnetic correlation effects between the spin of a magnetic adatom and the conduction electrons of the substrate, is modified in a characteristic way by the coupling of the neighbouring adatom spins. Increasing the interatomic distance of a Cobalt dimer from 2.56A to 8.1A we follow the oscillatory transition from ferromagnetic to antiferromagnetic coupling. Adding a third atom to the a…
A nearly-free-electron (NFE) model to describe STM spectroscopy of (111) metal surfaces with Kondo impurities is presented. Surface states are found to play an important role giving a larger contribution to the conductance in the case of Cu(111) and Au(111) than Ag(111) surfaces. This difference arises from the farther extension of the Ag(111) surface state into the substrate. The different line shapes observed when Co is adsorbed on different substrates can be explained from the position of the surface band onset relative to the Fermi energy. The lateral dependence of the line shape amplitude…
We report on a fully nonequilibrium theory of the scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) through resonances induced by impurity atoms adsorbed on metal surfaces. The theory takes into account the effect of the tunneling current and finite bias on the system and is valid for arbitrary intra-adsorbate electron correlation strength. It is thus applicable to the recent STM experiments on Kondo impurities.
A recent experimental study showed that, distorting a CoPc molecule adsorbed on a Au(111) surface, a Kondo effect is induced with a temperature higher than 200 K. We examine a model in which an atom with strong Coulomb repulsion (Co) is surrounded by four atoms on a square (molecule lobes), and two atoms above and below it representing the apex of the STM tip and an atom on the gold surface (all with a single, half-filled, atomic orbital). The Hamiltonian is solved exactly for the isolated cluster, and, after connecting the leads (STM tip and gold), the conductance is calculated by standard te…
Despite the experimental successes of Scanning Tunneling Microscopy (STM) and the interest in more complex magnetic nanostructures, our present understanding and theoretical description of STM spectra of magnetic adatoms is mainly phenomenological and most often ignores many-body effects. Here, we propose a theory which includes a microscopic description of the wave functions of the substrate and magnetic adatoms together with quantum many-body effects. To test our theory, we have computed the STM spectra of magnetic Cobalt monomers and dimers adsorbed on metallic Copper surfaces and succesful…
We propose an orbital-selective model for the transport and magnetic properties of the individual Co impurity deposited on the Pt(111). Using the combination of the Anderson-type Hamiltonian and the Kubo's linear response theory we show that the magnetization and dI/dV spectrum of Co adatom are originated from the 3d states of the different symmetry. A textbook expression for the spin-dependent differential conductance provides a natural connection between magnetic and transport properties of Co/Pt(111). We found that it is possible to detect and to manipulate the different 3d states of the Co…
The effect of magnetic impurities on the ballistic conductance of nanocontacts is, as suggested in recent work, amenable to ab initio study \cite{naturemat}. Our method proceeds via a conventional density functional calculation of spin and symmetry dependent electron scattering phase shifts, followed by the subsequent numerical renormalization group solution of Anderson models -- whose ingredients and parameters are chosen so as to reproduce these phase shifts. We apply this method to investigate the Kondo zero bias anomalies that would be caused in the ballistic conductance of perfect metalli…
Two magnetic atoms, one attached to the tip of a Scanning Tunneling Microscope (STM) and one adsorbed on a metal surface, each constituting a Kondo system, have been proposed as one of the simplest conceivable systems potentially exhibiting quantum critical behaviour. We have succeeded in implementing this concept experimentally for cobalt dimers clamped between an STM tip and a gold surface. Control of the tip-sample distance with sub-picometer resolution allows us to tune the interaction between the two cobalt atoms with unprecedented precision. Electronic transport measurements on this two-…
We report the growth process, structure, and electronic states of 1 unit layer (u.l.) of a Ce-Pt intermetallic compound on Pt(111) using scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy (STM/STS) and low-energy electron diffraction. An ordered $(2 \times 2)$ structure was observed in the form of films or nanoislands depending on Ce dose by annealing at around 700 K. A structural model constructed from atomically resolved STM images and quasiparticle interference (QPI) patterns indicates the formation of a new surface compound 1 u.l. CePt$_6$ on Pt(111) terminated by a Pt layer. A lateral lattice con…
We investigate the many-body effects of a magnetic adatom in ferromagnetic graphene by using the numerical renormalization group method. The nontrivial band dispersion of ferromagnetic graphene gives rise to interesting Kondo physics different from that in conventional ferromagnetic materials. For a half-filled impurity in undoped graphene, the presence of ferromagnetism can bring forth Kondo correlations, yielding two kink structures in the local spectral function near the Fermi energy. When the spin splitting of local occupations is compensated by an external magnetic field, the two Kondo ki…
The observation of the Kondo effect in mesoscopic systems under bias$^{1,2}$ has opened a new chapter in the physics of the Kondo phenomenon. Various types of $dI/dV$, where $I$ and $V$ denote current and source-drain (s-d) bias, respectively, line shapes have been measured by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM)$^{1,3-11}$. However, explanation by single Fano line shape$^{1,12-16}$ is not relevant and even misleading. Here, we provide consistent explanations for various asymmetric and symmetric line shapes in terms of a microscopic theory that shows the creation of two resonant tunneling level…
Inelastic spin flip excitations associated with single-ion magnetic anisotropy of quantum spins, can be strongly renormalized by Kondo exchange coupling to the conduction electrons in the substrate, as shown recently for the case of Co adatoms on CuN$_2$ islands. In this case differential conductance spectra show zero-bias anomalies due to a Kondo effect of the doubly degenerate ground state, and finite-bias step features due to spin flip excitations. Here I consider spin-1 quantum magnets with positive uniaxial anisotropy, where the ground state is non-degenerate and hence the Kondo effect do…
Using a large-N theory in combination with the Keldysh non-equilibrium Greens function formalism, we investigate the current, differential conductance, zero-frequency shot-noise and Fano factor as measured by scanning tunneling shot noise spectroscopy (STSNS) using a scanning tunneling microscope (STM) near single Kondo impurities and in Kondo lattices. We show that the Fano factor $F$ exhibits a characteristic bias dependence arising from Kondo screening that is similar to the Kondo resonance observed in the differential conductance. Moreover, the lineshape of $F$ is strongly dependent on the…
The electronic structure of selected rare-earth atoms adsorbed on a free-standing graphene was investigated using methods beyond the conventional density functional theory (DFT+U, DFT+HIA and DFT+ED). The influence of the electron correlations and the spin-orbit coupling on the magnetic properties has been examined. The DFT+U method predicts both atoms to carry local magnetic moments (spin and orbital) contrary to a nonmagnetic $f^6$ ($J=0$) ground-state configuration of Sm in the gas phase. Application of DFT${}+{}$Hubbard-I (HIA) and DFT${}+{}$exact diagonalization (ED) methods cures this pr…

Scanning tunneling miscoscopy is one of the most powerful spectroscopic tools for single-electron excitations. We show that the conductance fluctuations, or noise in the conductance, of a tunneling current into an interacting electron system is dominated by density-density and spin-spin correlations. This allows one to probe two-particle properties (susceptibilities) and collective excitations by standard experimental tunneling methods. We demonstrate this theoretically, using a novel many-body calculation for the multi-center Kondo problem, including both direct and indirect exchange between …
The coarsening of catalytically-active metal clusters is often accelerated by the presence of gases through the formation of mobile intermediates, though the exact mechanism through which this happens is often subject to debate. We use scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) to follow the CO induced coalescence of Pd adatoms supported on the Fe3O4(001) surface at room temperature. We show that highly-mobile Pd-carbonyl species, formed via the so-called skyhook effect, are temporarily trapped at other Pd adatoms. Once these reach a critical density, clusters nucleate; subsequent coarsening occurs t…
We study Kondo physics of a spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ impurity in electronic matter with strong spin-orbit interaction, which can be realized by depositing magnetic adatoms on the surface of a three-dimensional topological insulator. We show that magnetic properties of topological surface states and the very existence of Kondo screening strongly depend on details of the bulk material, and specifics of surface preparation encoded in time-reversal preserving boundary conditions for electronic wavefunctions. When this tunable Kondo effect occurs, the impurity spin is screened by purely orbital motion of…
We have performed first-principles calculation of the surface and bulk wavefunctions of the Cu(111) surface and their hybridization energies to a Co adatom, including the potential scattering from the Co. By analyzing the calculated hybridization energies, we found the bulk states dominate the contribution to the Kondo temperature, in agreement with recent experiments. Furthermore, we also calculate the tunneling conductance of a scanning tunneling microscope (STM) and compare our results with recent experiments of Co impurities in the Cu(111) surface. Good quantitative agreement is found at s…
Quantum entanglement permeates the complex ground states of correlated electron materials defying single-particle descriptions. Coupled magnetic atoms have potential as model systems for entanglement in condensed matter giving the opportunity to create artificial many-body states which can be controlled by tuning the underlying interactions. They provide an avenue to unravel the complexities of correlated-electron materials. Here we use low temperature scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM) and atomic manipulation to tune entanglement in chains of magnetic atoms. We find that a Kondo singlet sta…
