We study spin-dependent conductance in a system composed of a ferromagnetic (FM) Scanning Tunneling Microscope (STM) tip coupled to a metallic host surface with an adatom. The Kondo resonance is taken into account via the Doniach-Sunjic spectral function. For short lateral tip-adatom distances and due to the interplay between Kondo physics, quantum interfering effects and the ferromagnetism of the tip, a spin-splitting of the Fano-Kondo line shape arises in the conductance. A strong enhancement of the Fano-Kondo profile for the majority spin component of the FM tip is observed. When the tip is placed on the adatom, this gives a conductance 100 % polarized for a particular range of bias voltage. The system thus can be used as a powerful generator of spin polarized currents.
We theoretically compare transport properties of Fano-Kondo effect with those of Fano effect. We focus on shot noise characteristics of a triple quantum dot (QD) system in the Fano-Kondo region at zero temperature, and discuss the effect of strong electric correlation in QDs. We found that the modulation of the Fano dip is strongly affected by the on-site Coulomb interaction in QDs.
We demonstrate delicate control over the Kondo effect and its interplay with quantum interference in an Aharonov-Bohm interferometer containing one Kondo dot and one noninteracting dot. It is shown that the Kondo resonance undergoes a dramatic evolution as the interdot tunnel coupling progressively increases. A novel triple Kondo splitting occurs from the interference between constant and Lorentzian conduction bands that cooperate in forming the Kondo singlet. The device also manifests a highly controllable Fano-Kondo effect in coherent electronic transport, and can be tuned to a regime where …
We investigate the Fano-Kondo interplay in an Aharonov-Bohm ring with an embedded non-interacting quantum dot and a Coulomb interacting quantum dot. Using a slave-boson mean-field approximation we diagonalize the Hamiltonian via scattering matrix theory, and derive the conductance in the form of a Fano expression, which depends on the mean field parameters. We predict that in the Kondo regime the magnetic field leads to a gapped energy level spectrum due to hybridisation of the non-interacting QD state and the Kondo state, and can quantum-mechanically alter the electron's path preference. We d…
We study the Fano-Kondo effect in a closed Aharonov-Bohm (AB) interferometer which contains a single-level quantum dot and predict a frequency doubling of the AB oscillations as a signature of Kondo-correlated states. Using Keldysh formalism, Friedel sum rule and Numerical Renormalization Group, we calculate the exact zero-temperature linear conductance $G$ as a function of AB phase $ϕ$ and level position $ε$. In the unitary limit, $G(ϕ)$ reaches its maximum $2e^2/h$ at $ϕ=π/2$. We find a Fano-suppressed Kondo plateau for $G(ε)$ similar to recent experiments.
Electronic transport through a quantum dot strongly coupled to electrodes is studied within a model with two conduction channels. It is shown that multiple scattering and interference of transmitted waves through both channels lead to Fano resonance associated with Kondo resonance. Interference effects are also pronouncedly seen in transport through the Aharonov-Bohm ring with the Kondo dot, where the current characteristics continuously evolve with the magnetic flux.
The transmission of electrons through a non-interacting tight-binding chain with an interacting side quantum dot (QD) is analized. When the Kondo effect develops at the dot the conductance presents a wide minimum, reaching zero at the unitary limit. This result is compared to the opposite behaviour found in an embedded QD. Application of a magnetic field destroys the Kondo effect and the conductance shows pairs of dips separated by the charging energy U. The results are discussed in terms of Fano antiresonances and explain qualitatively recent experimental results.
We consider the theory of Kondo effect and Fano factor energy dependence for magnetic impurity (Co) on graphene. We have performed a first principles calculation and find that the two dimensional $E_1$ representation made of $d_{xz},d_{yz}$ orbitals is likely to be responsible for the hybridization and ultimately Kondo screening for cobalt on graphene. There are few high symmetry sites where magnetic impurity atom can be adsorbed. For the case of Co atom in the middle of hexagon of carbon lattice we find anomalously large Fano $q$-factor, $q\approx 80$ and strongly suppressed coupling to condu…
Linear conductance across a large quantum dot via a single level e_0 with large hybridization to the contacts is strongly sensitive to quasi-bound states localized in the dot and weakly coupled to e_0. It oscillates with the gate voltage due to interference of the Fano type. At low temperature and Coulomb blockade, Kondo correlations damp the oscillations on an extended range of gate voltage values, by freezing the occupancy of the e_0 level itself. As a consequence, antiresonances of Fano origin are washed out. The results are in good correspondence with experimental data for a large quantum …
Electron transport through parallel double quantum dot system with interdot tunneling and strong on-site Coulomb interaction is studied in the Kondo regime by using the finite-$U$ slave boson technique. For a system of quantum dots with degenerate energy levels, the linear conductance reaches the unitary limit ($2e^2/h$) due to the Kondo effect at low temperature when the interdot tunneling is absent. As the interdot tunneling amplitude increases, the conductance decreases in the singly occupied regime and a conductance plateau structure appears. In the crossover to the doubly occupied regime,…
The Kondo effect and the Fano-Kondo effect are important phenomena that have been observed in quantum dots (QDs). We theoretically investigate the transport properties of a coupled QD system in order to study the possibility of detecting a qubit state from the modulation of the conductance peak in the Kondo effect and the dip in the Fano-Kondo effect. We show that the peak and dip of the conductance are both shifted depending on the energy-level of the qubit. In particular, we find that we can estimate the optimal point and tunneling coupling between the |0> and |1> states of the qubit by meas…
We theoretically study the Fano-Kondo effect in a triple quantum dot (QD) system where two QDs constitute a two-level system and the other QD works in a detector with electrodes. We found that the Fano dip is clearly modulated by strongly coupled QDs in a two-level system and a slow detector with no interacting QD. This setup suggests a new method of reading out qubit states.
We report experimental observation of Kondo-Fano resonant tunneling in Si-doped GaAs/AlAs multiple quantum wells. The spectrum of differential tunneling conductance at low bias shows a strong temperature dependent resonance, whose peak is split in the presence of a magnetic field, characteristic of a Kondo resonance. The data is well explained as a resonant tunneling of conduction electrons at the Fermi level through the doped silicon impurity states inside the wells by using an impurity Anderson model. The Coulomb blockade resonance of the impurity states induces a Fano dip above the Kondo re…
The Kondo effect observed in recent STM experiments on transport through CoPc and TBrPP-Co molecules adsorbed on Au(111) and Cu(111) surfaces, respectively, is discussed within the framework of a simple model (Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 97}, 076806 (2006)). It is shown that, in the Kondo regime and by varying the adequate model parameters, it is possible to produce a crossover from a conductance Kondo peak (CoPc) to a conductance Fano dip (TBrPP-Co). In the case of TBrPP-Co/Cu(111) we show that the model reproduces the changes in the shape of the Fano dip, the raising of the Kondo temperature and s…
We investigate the bias dependence of the tunneling conductance between a spin-polarized (SP) scanning tunneling microscope (STM) tip and the surface conduction states of a normal metal with a Kondo adatom. Quantum interference between tip-host metal and tip-adatom-host metal conduction paths is studied in the full range of the Fano parameter $q$. The spin-polarized STM gives rise to a splitting of the Kondo peak and asymmetry in the zero-bias anomaly depending on the lateral tip-adatom distance. For increasing lateral distances, the Kondo peak-splitting shows a strong suppression and the spin…
We investigate the orbital origin of the Fano-Kondo line shapes measured in STM spectroscopy of magnetic adatoms on metal substrates. To this end we calculate the low-bias tunnel spectra of a Co adatom on the (001) and (111) Cu surfaces with our density functional theory-based ab initio transport scheme augmented by local correlations. In order to associate different $d$-orbitals with different Fano line shapes we only correlate individual $3d$-orbitals instead of the full Co $3d$-shell. We find that Kondo peaks arising in different $d$-levels indeed give rise to different Fano features in the…
We use holography to study a $(1+1)$-dimensional Conformal Field Theory (CFT) coupled to an impurity. The CFT is an $SU(N)$ gauge theory at large $N$, with strong gauge interactions. The impurity is an $SU(N)$ spin. We trigger an impurity Renormalization Group (RG) flow via a Kondo coupling. The Kondo effect occurs only below the critical temperature of a large-$N$ mean-field transition. We show that at all temperatures $T$, impurity spectral functions exhibit a Fano resonance, which in the low-$T$ phase is a large-$N$ manifestation of the Kondo resonance. We thus provide an example in which t…
The conduction electron density of states nearby single magnetic impurities, as measured recently by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), is calculated, taking into account tunneling into conduction electron states only. The Kondo effect induces a narrow Fano resonance in the conduction electron density of states, while scattering off the d-level generates a weakly energy dependent Friedel oscillation. The line shape varies with the distance between STM tip and impurity, in qualitative agreement with experiments, but is very sensitive to details of the band structure. For a Co impurity the exp…
We investigate theoretically the Andreev transport through a quantum dot strongly coupled with a normal metal/ferromagnet and a superconductor (N/F-QD-S), in which the interplay between the Kondo resonance and the Andreev bound states (ABSs) has not been clearly clarified yet. Here we show that the interference between the Kondo resonance and the ABSs modifies seriously the lineshape of the Kondo resonance, which manifests as a Fano resonance. The ferromagnetic lead with spin-polarization induces an effective field, which leads to splitting both of the Kondo resonance and the ABSs. The spin-po…
The nature of the second order phase transition that occurs in URu2Si2 at 17.5 K remains puzzling despite intensive research over the past two and half decades. A key question emerging in the field is whether a hybridization gap between the renormalized bands can be identified as the long-sought 'hidden' order parameter. We report on the measurement of a hybridization gap in URu2Si2 employing a spectroscopic technique based on quasiparticle scattering across a ballistic metallic junction. The differential conductance exhibits an asymmetric double-peak structure, a clear signature for a Fano re…
Motivated by recent success of local electron tunneling into heavy fermion materials, we study the local electronic structure around a single Kondo hole in an Anderson lattice model and the Fano interference pattern relevant to STM experiments. Within the Gutzwiller method, we find that an intragap bound state exists in the heavy Fermi liquid regime. The energy position of the intragap bound state is dependent on the on-site potential scattering strength in the conduction and $f$-orbital channels. Within the same method, we derive a new $dI/dV$ formulation, which includes explicitly the renorm…
Using a large-N theory in combination with the Keldysh non-equilibrium Greens function formalism, we investigate the current, differential conductance, zero-frequency shot-noise and Fano factor as measured by scanning tunneling shot noise spectroscopy (STSNS) using a scanning tunneling microscope (STM) near single Kondo impurities and in Kondo lattices. We show that the Fano factor $F$ exhibits a characteristic bias dependence arising from Kondo screening that is similar to the Kondo resonance observed in the differential conductance. Moreover, the lineshape of $F$ is strongly dependent on the…
We investigate out of equilibrium transport through an orbital Kondo system realized in a single quantum dot, described by the multiorbital impurity Anderson model. Shot noise and current are calculated up to the third order in bias voltage in the particle-hole symmetric case, using the renormalized perturbation theory. The derived expressions are asymptotically exact at low energies. The resulting Fano factor of the backscattering current $F_b$ is expressed in terms of the Wilson ratio $R$ and the orbital degeneracy $N$ as $F_b =\frac{1 + 9(N-1)(R-1)^2}{1 + 5(N-1)(R-1)^2}$ at zero temperature…
We investigate the electronic transport in a quantum wire with localized Rashba interaction. The Rashba field forms quasi-bound states which couple to the continuum states with an opposite spin direction. The presence of this Rashba dot causes Fano-like antiresonances and dips in the wire's linear conductance. The Fano lineshape arises from the interference between the direct transmission channel along the wire and the hopping through the Rashba dot. Due to the confinement, we predict the observation of large charging energies in the local Rashba region which lead to Coulomb-blockade effects i…
We theoretically investigate the spin-resolved local density of states (SR-LDOS) of a spin-polarized two-dimensional electron gas in the presence of a Kondo adatom and a STM probe. Using Green function formalism and the atomic approach in the limit of infinite Coulomb correlation, it is found an analytical SR-LDOS expression in the low temperature regime of the system. This formal result is given in terms of phase shifts originated by the adatom scattering and Fano interference. The SR-LDOS is investigated as a function of the probe position and different Fano factors. Our findings provide an …
We investigate the role of quantum coherence in tunneling conductance, where quantum criticality turns out to suppress Fano resonance. Based on the nonequilibrium noncrossing approximation, we show that the linear tunneling conductance exhibits weak Fano line-shape with sharp cusp at zero energy in the multichannel Kondo effect, resulting from incoherence associated with quantum criticality of impurity dynamics. In particular, shift of the peak position in the Fano resonance is predicted not to occur for the multichannel Kondo effect, distinguished from the Fermi liquid theory in the single ch…
We present a large-N theory for the differential conductance, dI/dV, in Kondo systems measured via scanning tunneling spectroscopy. We demonstrate that quantum interference between tunneling processes into the conduction band and into the magnetic f-electron states is crucial in determining the experimental Fano lineshape of dI/dV. This allows one to uniquely extract the Kondo coupling and the ratio of the tunneling amplitudes from the experimental dI/dV curve. Finally, we show that dI/dV directly reflects the strength of the antiferromagnetic interaction in Kondo lattice systems.
A leading candidate for experimental confirmation of the non-local quantum dynamics of Majorana fermions is the topological Kondo effect, predicted for mesoscopic superconducting islands connected to metallic leads. We identify an anisotropic, Toulouse-like, limit of the topological Kondo problem where the full nonequilibrium conductance and shot noise can be calculated exactly. Near the Kondo fixed point, we find novel asymptotic features including a universal conductance scaling function, and fractional charge quantisation observable via the Fano factor. In the universal regime, our results …
We explore theoretically the density of states (LDOS) probed by an STM tip of 2D systems hosting an adatom and a subsurface impurity, both capacitively coupled to AFM tips and traversed by antiparallel magnetic fields. Two kinds of setups are analyzed, a monolayer of graphene and a two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG). The AFM tips set the impurity levels at the Fermi energy, where two contrasting behaviors emerge: the Fano factor for the graphene diverges, while in the 2DEG it approaches zero. As result, the spin-degeneracy of the LDOS is lifted exclusively in the graphene system, in particular…

We show that Fano interference explains how point contact spectroscopy in heavy electron materials probes the emergence of the Kondo heavy electron liquid below the same characteristic temperature T* as that seen in many other experiments, and why the resulting measured conductance asymmetry reflects the universal Kondo liquid behavior seen in these. Its physical origin is the opening of a new channel for electron tunneling beyond that available from the background conduction electrons. We propose a simple phenomenological expression for the resulting Fano interference that provides a good fit…
The transport through a quantum wire with a side coupled quantum dot is studied. We use the X-boson treatment for the Anderson single impurity model in the limit of $U=\infty $. The conductance presents a minimum for values of T=0 in the crossover from mixed-valence to Kondo regime due to a destructive interference between the ballistic channel associated with the quantum wire and the quantum dot channel. We obtain the experimentally studied Fano behavior of the resonance. The conductance as a function of temperature exhibits a logarithmic and universal behavior, that agrees with recent experi…
We study the impact of dynamical correlations on the electronic structure and coherent transport properties of Cu nanocontacts hosting a single magnetic impurity (Ni,Co,Fe) in the contact region. The strong dynamical correlations of the impurity 3d-electrons are fully taken into account by combining density functional calculations with a dynamical treatment of the impurity 3d-shell in the one-crossing approximation. We find that dynamical correlations give rise to the Kondo effect and lead to Fano features in the coherent transport characteristics similar to those observed in related experimen…
The coherent transport through a set of N quantum dots coupled in parallel is considered in the limit of infinite intradot and finite or infinite interdot interactions. The mean field slave boson approach and the equation of motion method are used. For the full spin-orbit degenerate case the low energy behavior is characterized by an SU(2N) symmetry with entangled spin and charge correlations. The magnetic field breaks the spin degeneracy, but for the special choices of gate voltages the degeneracy might be recovered in one spin channel allowing the spin filtering.
Conductance through a system consisting of a wire with side-attached quantum dots is calculated. Such geometry of the device allows to study the coexistence of quantum interference, electron correlations and their influence on conductance. We underline the differences between "classical" Fano resonance in which the resonant channel is of single-particle nature and "many-body" Fano resonance with the resonant channel formed by Kondo effect. The influence of electron-electron interactions on the Fano resonance shape is also analyzed.
We study influence of the phonon modes on a subgap spectrum and Andreev conductance for the double quantum dot vertically coupled between a metallic and superconducting lead. For the monochromatic phonon reservoir we obtain replicas of the interferometric Fano-type structures appearing simultaneously in the particle and hole channels. We furthermore confront the induced on-dot pairing with the electron correlations and investigate how the phonon modes affect the zero-bias signature of the Kondo effect in Andreev conductance.
The effect of magnetic impurities on the ballistic conductance of nanocontacts is, as suggested in recent work, amenable to ab initio study \cite{naturemat}. Our method proceeds via a conventional density functional calculation of spin and symmetry dependent electron scattering phase shifts, followed by the subsequent numerical renormalization group solution of Anderson models -- whose ingredients and parameters are chosen so as to reproduce these phase shifts. We apply this method to investigate the Kondo zero bias anomalies that would be caused in the ballistic conductance of perfect metalli…
We theoretically investigate the thermoelectric properties of a spin-polarized two-dimensional electron gas hosting a Kondo adatom hybridized with an STM tip. Such a setup is treated within the single-impurity Anderson model in combination with the atomic approach for the Green's functions. Due to the spin dependence of the Fermi wavenumbers the electrical and thermal conductances, together with thermopower and Lorenz number reveal beating patterns as function of the STM tip position in the Kondo regime. In particular, by tuning the lateral displacement of the tip with respect to the adatom vi…
Inelastic spin flip excitations associated with single-ion magnetic anisotropy of quantum spins, can be strongly renormalized by Kondo exchange coupling to the conduction electrons in the substrate, as shown recently for the case of Co adatoms on CuN$_2$ islands. In this case differential conductance spectra show zero-bias anomalies due to a Kondo effect of the doubly degenerate ground state, and finite-bias step features due to spin flip excitations. Here I consider spin-1 quantum magnets with positive uniaxial anisotropy, where the ground state is non-degenerate and hence the Kondo effect do…
Conductance, on-site and inter-site charge fluctuations and spin correlations in the system of two side-coupled quantum dots are calculated using the Wilson's numerical renormalization group (NRG) technique. We also show spectral density calculated using the density-matrix NRG, which for some parameter ranges remedies inconsistencies of the conventional approach. By changing the gate voltage and the inter-dot tunneling rate, the system can be tuned to a non-conducting spin-singlet state, the usual Kondo regime with odd number of electrons occupying the dots, the two-stage Kondo regime with two…
The effect of side-traps on conductance is calculated in the range of slave-boson mean field theory, especially when there are electrodes on both sides of the conductor. This corresponds to an investigation of transport properties in future ballistic transistors. An intrinsic dip as a result of the interference effect (Fano-Kondo effect) is expected to be observed as one of interesting interplays between physics and engineering devices.
We study the Kondo effect of a single magnetic adatom on the surface of graphene. It was shown that the unique linear dispersion relation near the Dirac points in graphene makes it more easy to form the local magnetic moment, which simply means that the Kondo resonance can be observed in a more wider parameter region than in the metallic host. The result indicates that the Kondo resonance indeed can form ranged from the Kondo regime, to the mixed valence, even to the empty orbital regime. While the Kondo resonance displays as a sharp peak in the first regime, it has a peak-dip structure and/or…

We investigate the spin-dependent transport properties of quantum-dot based structures where Kondo correlations dominate the electronic dynamics. The coupling to ferromagnetic leads with parallel magnetizations is known to give rise to nontrivial effects in the local density of states of a single quantum dot. We show that this influence strongly depends on whether charge fluctuations are present or absent in the dot. This result is confirmed with numerical renormalization group calculations and perturbation theory in the on-site interaction. In the Fermi-liquid fixed point, we determine the co…
We show that a strongly correlated quantum dot embedded in an Aharonov-Bohm interferometer can be used to filter both charge and spin at zero voltage bias. The magnitude with which the Aharonov-Bohm arm is coupled to the system controls the many-body effects on the quantum dot. When the quantum dot is in the Kondo regime the flow of charge through the system can be tuned by the phase of the Aharonov-Bohm arm, $ϕ_{AB}$. Furthermore when a spin-orbit interaction is present on a Kondo quantum dot we can control the flow of spin by the spin-orbit phase, $ϕ_{SO}$. The existence of the Kondo peak at…
In the new van der Waals Kondo-lattice Fe$_3$GeTe$_2$, itinerant ferromagnetism and heavy fermionic behaviour coexist. Both the key properties of such a system namely a spin-polarized Fermi surface and a low Fermi momentum are expected to significantly alter Andreev reflection dominated transport at a contact with a superconducting electrode, and display unconventional proximity-induced superconductivity. We observed interplay between Andreev reflection and Kondo resonance at mesoscopic interfaces between superconducting Nb and Fe$_3$GeTe$_2$. Above the critical temperature ($T_c$) of Nb, the …
The coherent spin dependent transport through a set of two capacitively coupled quantum dots placed in a magnetic field is considered within the equation of motion method. The magnetic field breaks the spin degeneracy. For special choices of gate voltages the dot levels are tuned to resonance and the orbital Kondo effect results. For different Zeemann splittings at the dots the Kondo resonance can be formed for only one spin channel. In this case the system operates as an efficient spin filter.
Molecular contacts are generally poorly conducting because their energy levels tend to lie far from the Fermi energy of the metal contact, necessitating undesirably large gate and bias voltages in molecular electronics applications. Molecular radicals are an exception because their partly filled orbitals undergo Kondo screening, opening the way to electron passage even at zero bias. While that phenomenon has been experimentally demonstrated for several complex organic radicals, quantitative theoretical predictions have not been attempted so far. It is therefore an open question whether and to …
We study the transport properties of a quantum dot embedded in an Aharonov-Bohm ring in the presence of spin-orbit interactions. Using a numerical renormalization group analysis of the system in the Kondo regime, we find that the competition of Aharonov-Bohm and spin-orbit dynamical phases induces a strong suppression of the Kondo state singlet, somewhat akin to an effective intrinsic magnetic field in the system. This effective field breaks the spin degeneracy of the localized state and produces a finite magnetic moment in the dot. By introducing an {\em in-plane} Zeeman field we show that th…
We study the effect of an external magnetic field in the Kondo regime of a double-quantum-dot system in which a strongly correlated dot (the "hanging dot") is coupled to a second, noninteracting dot that also bridges the gap between two external leads. In zero field, the spectral function of the hanging dot has previously been shown to exhibit a split-peak structure near the Fermi level due to "Kondo resonance filtering" by the bridging dot. We show using the numerical renormalization group that application of a magnetic field leads to a subtle interplay between electronic interference, Kondo …
A simple model is introduced to describe conductance measurements between a scanning tunneling microscope (STM) tip and a noble metal surface with adsorbed transition metal atoms which display the Kondo effect. The model assumes a realistic parameterization of the potential created by the surface and a d3z2-r2 orbital for the description of the adsorbate. Fano lineshapes associated with the Kondo resonance are found to be sensitive to details of the adsorbate-substrate interaction. For instance, bringing the adsorbate closer to the surface leads to more asymmetric lineshapes while their depend…
Strong correlation effects in a capacitively coupled double quantum-dot setup were previously shown to provide the possibility of both entangling spin-charge degrees of freedom and realizing efficient spin-filtering operations by static gate-voltage manipulations. Motivated by the use of such a device for quantum computing, we study the influence of electromagnetic noise on a general spin-orbital Kondo model, and investigate the conditions for observing coherent, unitary transport, crucial to warrant efficient spin manipulations. We find a rich phase diagram, where low-energy properties sensit…
A numerical renormalization-group study of the conductance through a quantum wire side-coupled to a quantum dot is reported. The temperature and the dot-energy dependence of the conductance are examined in the light of a recently derived linear mapping between the Kondo-regime temperature-dependent conductance and the universal function describing the conductance for the symmetric Anderson model of a quantum wire with an embedded quantum dot. Two conduction paths, one traversing the wire, the other a bypass through the quantum dot, are identified. A gate potential applied to the quantum wire i…
Numerical calculations indicate that by suitably controlling the individual gate voltages of a capacitively coupled parallel double quantum dot, with each quantum dot coupled to one of two independent non-magnetic channels, this system can be set into a spin-orbital Kondo state by applying a magnetic field. This Kondo regime, closely related to the SU(4) Kondo, flips spin from one to zero through cotunneling processes that generate almost totally spin-polarized currents with opposite spin orientation along the two channels. Moreover, by appropriately changing the gate voltages of both quantum …
The Kondo zero bias anomaly of Co adatoms probed by scanning tunneling microscopy is known to depend on the height of the tip above the surface, and this dependence is different on different low index Cu surfaces. On the (100) surface, the Kondo temperature first decreases then increases as the tip approaches the adatom, while on the (111) surface it is virtually unaffected. These trends are captured by combined density functional theory and numerical renormalization group (DFT+NRG) calculations. The adatoms are found to be described by an S = 1 Anderson model on both surfaces, and ab initio c…
The $SU(4)-SU(2)$ crossover, driven by an external magnetic field $h$, is analyzed in a capacitively-coupled double-quantum-dot device connected to independent leads. As one continuously charges the dots from empty to quarter-filled, by varying the gate potential $V_g$, the crossover starts when the magnitude of the spin polarization of the double quantum dot, as measured by $\langle n_{\uparrow}\rangle -\langle n_{\downarrow}\rangle$, becomes finite. Although the external magnetic field breaks the $SU(4)$ symmetry of the Hamiltonian, the ground state preserves it in a region of $V_g$, where $…
Quantum point contacts (QPCs) and quantum dots (QDs), two elementary building blocks of semiconducting nanodevices, both exhibit famously anomalous conductance features: the 0.7-anomaly in the former case, the Kondo effect in the latter. For both the 0.7-anomaly and the Kondo effect, the conductance shows a remarkably similar low-energy dependence on temperature $T$, source-drain voltage $V_{\rm sd}$ and magnetic field $B$. In a recent publication [F. Bauer et al., Nature, 501, 73 (2013)], we argued that the reason for these similarities is that both a QPC and a KQD feature spin fluctuations t…
Low-temperature electronic conductance in nanocontacts, scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), and metal break junctions involving magnetic atoms or molecules is a growing area with important unsolved theoretical problems. While the detailed relationship between contact geometry and electronic structure requires a quantitative ab initio approach such as density functional theory (DFT), the Kondo many-body effects ensuing from the coupling of the impurity spin with metal electrons are most properly addressed by formulating a generalized Anderson impurity model to be solved with, for example, the …
