Okazaki { \it等} [Phys. Rev.

Numerical calculations indicate that by suitably controlling the individual gate voltages of a capacitively coupled parallel double quantum dot, with each quantum dot coupled to one of two independent non-magnetic channels, this system can be set into a spin-orbital Kondo state by applying a magnetic field. This Kondo regime, closely related to the SU(4) Kondo, flips spin from one to zero through cotunneling processes that generate almost totally spin-polarized currents with opposite spin orientation along the two channels. Moreover, by appropriately changing the gate voltages of both quantum dots, one can simultaneously flip the spin polarization of the currents in each channel. As a similar zero magnetic field Kondo effect has been recently observed by Y. Okazaki {\it et al.} [Phys. Rev. B {\bf 84}, (R)161305 (2011)], we analyze a range of magnetic field values where this polarization effect seems robust, suggesting that the setup may be used as an efficient bipolar spin filter, which can generate electrostatically reversible spatially separated spin currents with opposite polarizations.
We extend a perturbative, nonequilibrium renormalization group approach to multi-orbital systems and apply it for studying transport through two parallel quantum dots coupled electrostatically. In general, the conductance shows pronounced Kondoesque peaks at three voltages. One of these peaks disappears if, as in some experiments, one of the dots is decoupled from one of the two leads. For an asymmetric coupling to the leads, also negative differential conductances are possible. This is a genuine nonequilibrium effect, accompanying the Kondoesque peaks. Moreover, a criterion to distinguish spi…
We analyze theoretically the phase diagram of a triangular triple quantum dot with strong onsite repulsion coupled to ferromagnetic leads. This model includes the competition of magnetic ordering of local or itinerant magnetic moments, geometric frustration and Kondo screening. We identify all the phases resulting from this competition. We find that three Kondo phases -- the conventional one, the two-stage underscreened one, and the one resulting from the ferromagnetic Kondo effect -- can be realized at zero temperature, and all are very susceptible to the proximity of ferromagnetic leads. In …
Spin polarized transport through a quantum dot coupled to ferromagnetic electrodes with noncollinear magnetizations is discussed in terms of nonequilibrium Green functions formalism in the finite-U slave boson mean field approximation. The difference of orientations of the magnetizations of electrodes opens off-diagonal spin-orbital transmission and apart from spin currents of longitudinal polarization also spin-flip currents appear. We also study equilibrium pure spin current at zero bias and discuss its dependence on magnetization orientation, spin-orbit coupling strength and gate voltage. I…
We investigate transport through an exotic ``charge'' qubit composed of two strongly capacitively coupled quantum dots (QDs), each being independently connected to a side gate which in general exhibits a fluctuating electrostatic field ({\em i.e.}, Nyquist/Johnson noise). Two quantum phases are found: the ``Kondo'' phase where an orbital-Kondo entanglement emerges and a ``local moment'' phase in which the noise destroys the Kondo effect leaving the orbital spin unscreened and resulting in a clear suppression of the conductance. In the Kondo realm, the transfer of charge across the setting is a…
In normal metals, the magnetic moment of impurity spins disappears below a characteristic Kondo temperature, TK, where coupling with the conduction-band electrons produces an entangled state that screens the local moment. In contrast, moments embedded in insulators remain unscreened at all temperatures. This raises the question about the fate of magnetic moments in intermediate, pseudogap systems, such as graphene. In these systems theory predicts a quantum phase-transition at a critical coupling strength which separates a local magnetic-moment phase from a Kondo screened phase. However, attem…
We consider a model describing a spin field-effect transistor based on a quantum nanowire with a tunable spin-orbit interaction embedded between two ferromagnetic leads with anticollinear magnetization. We investigate a regime of a strong interplay between resonance Kondo scattering and interference associated with the Aharonov-Casher effect. Using the Keldysh technique at weak coupling regime we calculate perturbatively the charge current. It is predicted that the effects of the spin-orbit interaction result in a non-vanishing current for any spin polarization of the leads including the case …
It is demonstrated theoretically that the circularly polarized irradiation of two-dimensional electron systems can induce the localized electron states which antiferromagnetically interact with conduction electrons, resulting in the Kondo effect. Conditions of experimental observation of the effect are discussed for semiconductor quantum wells.
The effects of the long range electrostatic interaction in twisted bilayer graphene are described using the Hartree-Fock approximation. The results show a significant dependence of the band widths and shapes on electron filling, and the existence of broken symmetry phases at many densities, either valley/spin polarized, with broken sublattice symmetry, or both.
We consider a quantum dot coupled to both superconducting and spin-polarized electrodes, and study the triad interplay of the Kondo effect, superconductivity, and ferromagnetism, any pair of which compete with and suppress each other. We find that the interplay leads to a mixed-valence quantum phase transition, which for other typical sysmstems is merely a crossover rather than a true transition. At the transition, the system changes from the spin doublet to singlet state. The singlet phase is adiabatically connected (through crossovers) to the so-called 'charge Kondo state' and to the superco…
The prospect of using semiconductor quantum dots as an experimental tool to distinguish Majorana zero modes (MZMs) from other zero-energy excitations such as Kondo resonances has brought up the fundamental question of whether topological superconductivity and the Kondo effect can coexist in these systems. Here, we study the Kondo effect in a quantum dot coupled to a metallic contact and to a pair of MZMs. We consider a situation in which the MBS are spin polarized in opposite directions. By using numerical renormalization-group calculations and scaling analysis of the renormalization group equ…
