We consider the optimization problem of minimizing $\int_Ω|\nabla u|^{p(x)}+ λχ_{\{u>0\}} dx$ in the class of functions $W^{1,p(\cdot)}(Ω)$ with $u-ϕ_0\in W_0^{1,p(\cdot)}(Ω)$, for a given $ϕ_0\geq 0$ and bounded. $W^{1,p(\cdot)}(Ω)$ is the class of weakly differentiable functions with $\int_Ω|\nabla u|^{p(x)} dx<\infty$. We prove that every solution $u$ is locally Lipschitz continuous, that it is a solution to a free boundary problem and that the free boundary, $Ω\cap\partial\{u>0\}$, is a regular surface.
In this paper we investigate a two dimensional free boundary problem involving the A-Laplacian. We show that the free boundary is represented locally by graphs of a family of continuous functions.
In this paper, we study existence of boundary blow-up solutions for elliptic equations involving regional fractional Laplacian. We also discuss the optimality of our results.
For a one-phase free boundary problem involving a fractional Laplacian, we prove that "flat free boundaries" are $C^{1,α}$. We recover the regularity results of Caffarelli for viscosity solutions of the classical Bernoulli-type free boundary problem with the standard Laplacian.
In this paper we prove local interior and boundary Lipschitz continuity of solutions of a free boundary problem involving the $A$-Laplacian. We also show that the free boundary is represented locally by graphs of a family of lower semi-continuous functions.
In this paper we consider a weakly coupled $p$-Laplacian system of a Bernoulli type free boundary problem, through minimization of a corresponding functional. We prove various properties of any local minimizer and the corresponding free boundary.
We study the interior Bernoulli free boundary problem for the infinity Laplacian. Our results cover existence, uniqueness, and characterization of solutions (above a threshold representing the "infinity Bernoulli constant"), their regularity, and their relationship with the solutions to the interior Bernoulli problem for the $p$-laplacian.
We prove a higher regularity result for the free boundary in the obstacle problem for the fractional Laplacian via a higher order boundary Harnack inequality.
We begin the paper with a Hopf's lemma for a fractional p-Laplacian problem on a half-space. Specifically speaking, we show that the derivative of the solution along the outward normal vector is strictly positive on the boundary of the half-space. Next we show that positive solutions to a fractional p-Laplacian equation possess certain Holder continuity up to the boundary.
In this paper we study a one phase free boundary problem for the p(x)-Laplacian with non-zero right hand side. We prove that the free boundary of a weak solution is a C^1 surface in a neighborhood of every free boundary point. We also obtain further regularity results on the free boundary, under further regularity assumptions on the data. We apply these results to limit functions of an inhomogeneous singular perturbation problem for the p(x)-Laplacian that we studied in Lederman, C., & Wolanski, N. An inhomogeneous singular perturbation problem for the p(x)-Laplacian, Non- linear Anal. 138 (20…
In this paper we consider in a bounded domain $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^N$ with smooth boundary an eigenvalue problem for the negative $(p,q)$-Laplacian with a Steklov type boundary condition, where $p\in (1,\infty)$, $q\in (2,\infty)$ and $p\neq q$. A full description of the set of eigenvalues of this problem is provided, thus essentially extending a recent result by Abreu and Madeira [1] related to the $(p,2)$-Laplacian.
We prove the existence of a principal eigenvalue associated to the $\infty$-Laplacian plus lower order terms and the Neumann boundary condition in a bounded smooth domain. As an application we get uniqueness and existence results for the Neumann problem and a decay estimate for viscosity solutions of the Neumann evolution problem.
We prove nonlinear lower bounds and commutator estimates for the Dirichlet fractional Laplacian in bounded domains. The applications include bounds for linear drift-diffusion equations with nonlocal dissipation and global existence of weak solutions of critical surface quasi-geostrophic equations.
We study the regularity of the solutions to initial-boundary value problems for N-systems of the p-Laplacian type, in $n\geq 3$ space variables, with square-integrable external forces in the space-time cylinder. So, the ellipticity coefficient remains unbounded. The singular case $μ=0 $ is covered.
We consider the p-Laplacian system of N equations in n space variables, 1< p\leq 2, under the homogeneous Navier slip boundary condition. Furthermore, the gradient of the velocity is replaced by the, more physical, symmetric gradient. We prove W^{2, q} regularity, up to the boundary, under suitable assumptions on the couple p,q. The singular case μ= 0 is covered.
This paper is concerned with an evolution problem having an elliptic equation involving the 1-Laplacian operator and a dynamical boundary condition. We apply nonlinear semigroup theory to obtain existence and uniqueness results as well as a comparison principle. Our main theorem shows that the solution we found is actually a strong solution. We also compare solutions with different data.
We discuss the optimal regularity and nondegeneracy of a free boundary problem related to the fractional Laplacian. This work is related to, but addresses a different problem from, recent work of Caffarelli, Roquejoffre, and Sire. A variant of the boundary Harnack inequality is also proved, where it is no longer required that the function be 0 along the boundary.
We establish interior and up to the boundary Hölder regularity estimates for weak solutions of the Dirichlet problem for the fractional $g-$Laplacian with bounded right hand side and $g$ convex. These are the first regularity results available in the literature for integro-differential equations in the context of fractional Orlicz-Sobolev spaces.
We prove two bounds for the first Robin eigenvalue of the Finsler Laplacian with negative boundary parameter in the planar case. In the constant area problem, we show that the Wulff shape is the maximizer only for values which are close to 0 of the boundary parameter and, in the fixed perimeter case, that the Wulff shape maximizes the first eigenvalue for all values of the parameter.
We study a free boundary optimization problem in heat conduction, ruled by the infinity-Laplace operator, with lower temperature bound and a volume constraint. We obtain existence and regularity results and derive geometric properties for the solution and the free boundaries.
We study the exterior and interior Bernoulli problems for the half Laplacian and the interior Bernoulli problem for the spectral half Laplacian. We concentrate on the existence and geometric properties of solutions. Our main results are the following. For the exterior Bernoulli problem for the half Laplacian, we show that under starshapedness assumptions on the data the free domain is starshaped. For the interior Bernoulli problem for the spectral half Laplacian, we show that under convexity assumptions on the data the free domain is convex and we prove a Brunn-Minkowski inequality for the Ber…
We investigate the limiting behavior of solutions to the inhomogeneous $p$-Laplacian equation $-Δ_p u = μ_p$ subject to Neumann boundary conditions. For right hand sides which are arbitrary signed measures we show that solutions converge to a Kantorovich potential associated with the geodesic Wasserstein-$1$ distance. In the regular case with continuous right hand sides we characterize the limit as viscosity solution to an infinity Laplacian / eikonal type equation.
We present a construction of harmonic functions on bounded domains for the spectral fractional Laplacian operator and we classify them in terms of their divergent profile at the boundary. This is used to establish and solve boundary value problems associated with nonhomogeneous boundary conditions. We provide a weak-$L^1$ theory to show how problems with measure data at the boundary and inside the domain are well-posed. We study linear and semilinear problems, performing a sub- and supersolution method, and we finally show the existence of large solutions for some power-like nonlinearities.
In this paper we consider PDE's problems involving the anisotropic Laplacian operator, with Robin boundary conditions. By means of Talenti techniques, widely used in the last decades, we prove a comparison result between the solutions of the above-mentioned problems and the solutions of the symmetrized ones. As a consequence of these results, a Bossel-Daners type inequality can be shown in dimension 2.
We use a characterization of the fractional Laplacian as a Dirichlet to Neumann operator for an appropriate differential equation to study its obstacle problem. We write an equivalent characterization as a thin obstacle problem. In this way we are able to apply local type arguments to obtain sharp regularity estimates for the solution and study the regularity of the free boundary.
In this work we use reiterated homogenization and unfolding operator approach to study the asymptotic behavior of the solutions of the $p$-Laplacian equation with Neumann boundary conditions set in a rough thin domain with concentrated terms on the boundary. We study weak, resonant and high roughness, respectively. In the three cases, we deduce the effective equation capturing the dependence on the geometry of the thin channel and the neighborhood where the concentrations take place.
We study the boundary integral operator induced from the fractional Laplace equation in a bounded smooth domain. For $1/2 < α? < 1$, we show the bijectivity of the boundary integral operator $S_{2α} : L^p(\partial Ω) \rightarrow H^{2α-1}_p (\partial Ω), 1 < p < 1$. As an application, we show the existence of the solution of the boundary value problem of the fractional Laplace equation.
In this paper we study the $p$-Poisson equation with Robin boundary conditions, where the Robin parameter is a function. By means of some weighted isoperimetric inequalities, we provide various sharp bounds for the solutions to the problems under consideration. We also derive a Faber-Krahn-type inequality.
We study the existence, uniqueness and regularity of solutions of the equation $f_t = Δ_p f = \text{div} (|Df|^{p-2} Df)$ under over-determined boundary conditions $f = 0$ and $|Df| = 1$. We show that if the initial data is concave and Lipschitz with a bounded and convex support, then the problem admits a unique solution which exists until it vanishes identically. Furthermore, the free-boundary of the support of $f$ is smooth for all positive time.
We present explicit formulas for solutions to nonhomogeneous boundary value problems involving any positive power of the Laplacian in the half-space. For non-integer powers the operator becomes nonlocal and this requires a suitable extension of Dirichlet-type boundary conditions. A key ingredient in our proofs is a point inversion transformation which preserves harmonicity and allows us to use known results for the ball. We include uniqueness statements, regularity estimates, and describe the growth or decay of solutions at infinity and at the boundary.
In this paper, we prove the existence of a weak solution for the Dirichlet boundary value problem related to the $p(x)-$Laplacian $$ -\mbox{div}(|\nabla u|^{p(x)-2}\nabla u)+u\in -[\underline{g}(x,u),\overline{g}(x,u)], $$ by using the degree theory after turning the problem into a Hammerstein equation. The right hand side $g$ is a possibly discontinuous function in the second variable satisfying some non-standard growth conditions..
We turn back to some pioneering results concerning, in particular, nonlinear potential theory and non-homogeneous boundary value problems for the so called p-Laplacian operator. Unfortunately these results, obtained at the very beginning of the seventies, were kept in the shade. We believe that our proofs are still of interest, in particular due to their extreme simplicity. Moreover, some contributions seem to improve the results quoted in the current literature.
Boundary conditions for Bismut's hypoelliptic Laplacian which naturally correspond to Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions for Hodge Laplacians are considered. Those are related with specific boundary conditions for the differential and its various adjoints. Once the closed realizations of those operators are well understood, the commutation of the differential with the resolvent of the hypoelliptic Laplacian is checked with other properties like the PT-symmetry, which are important for the spectral analysis.
We consider a pseudo-differential equation driven by the fractional $p$-Laplacian with $p\ge 2$ (degenerate case), with a bounded reaction $f$ and Dirichlet type conditions in a smooth domain $Ω$. By means of barriers, a nonlocal superposition principle, and the comparison principle, we prove that any weak solution $u$ of such equation exhibits a weighted Hölder regularity up to the boundary, that is, $u/d^s\in C^α(\overlineΩ)$ for some $α\in(0,1)$, $d$ being the distance from the boundary.
In this article, we investigate the initial and boundary blow-up problem for the $p$-Laplacian parabolic equation $u_t-Δ_p u=-b(x,t)f(u)$ over a smooth bounded domain $Ω$ of $\mathbb{R}^N$ with $N\ge2$, where $Δ_pu={\rm div}(|\nabla u|^{p-2}\nabla u)$ with $p>1$, and $f(u)$ is a function of regular variation at infinity. We study the existence and uniqueness of positive solutions, and their asymptotic behaviors near the parabolic boundary.
In the paper we consider a boundary value problem involving a differential equation with the fractional Laplacian $(-Δ)^{α/2}$ for $α\in\left( 1,2\right) $ and some superlinear and subcritical nonlinearity $G_{z}$ provided with a nonhomogeneous Dirichlet exterior boundary condition. Some sufficient conditions under which the set of weak solutions to the boundary value problem is nonempty and depends continuously in the Painleve-Kuratowski sense on distributed parameters and exterior boundary data are stated. The proofs of the existence results rely on the Mountain Pass Theorem. The application…
We present a notion of weak solution for the Dirichlet problem driven by the fractional Laplacian, following the Stampacchia theory. Then, we study semilinear problems on bounded domains $Ω$ with two different boundary conditions at the same time: the shape of the solution outside $Ω$ and a weighted limit to the boundary. We allow the nonlinearity to be positive or negative and we look for solutions blowing up at the boundary. Our starting observation is the existence of s-harmonic functions which explode at the boundary: these will be used both as supersolutions in the case of negative nonlin…
We obtain, by using the Leggett-Williams fixed point theorem, sufficient conditions that ensure the existence of at least three positive solutions to some $p$-Laplacian boundary value problems on time scales.
We study the regularity up to the boundary of solutions to the Neumann problem for the fractional Laplacian. We prove that if $u$ is a weak solution of $(-Δ)^s u=f$ in $Ω$, $\mathcal N_s u=0$ in $Ω^c$, then $u$ is $C^α$ up tp the boundary for some $α>0$. Moreover, in case $s>\frac12$, we then show that $u\in C^{2s-1+α}(\overlineΩ)$. To prove these results we need, among other things, a delicate Moser iteration on the boundary with some logarithmic corrections. Our methods allow us to treat as well the Neumann problem for the regional fractional Laplacian, and we establish the same boundary reg…
In this paper we consider a two-phase free boundary problem ruled by the infinity Laplacian. Our main result states that bounded viscosity solutions in $B_1$ are universally Lipschitz continuous in $B_{1/2}$, which is the optimal regularity for the problem. We make a new use of the Ishii-Lions' method, which works as a surrogate for the lack of a monotonicity formula and is bound to be applicable in related problems.
We study an inverse problem for nonlinear elliptic equations modelled after the p-Laplacian. It is proved that the boundary values of a conductivity coefficient are uniquely determined from boundary measurements given by a nonlinear Dirichlet-to-Neumann map. The result is constructive and local, and gives a method for determining the coefficient at a boundary point from measurements in a small neighborhood. The proofs work with the nonlinear equation directly instead of being based on linearization. In the complex valued case we employ complex geometrical optics type solutions based on p-harmo…
In this paper we study the limit as $p\to \infty$ in the evolution problem driven by the $p-$Laplacian with dynamical boundary conditions. We prove that the natural energy functional associated with this problem converges to a limit in the sense of Mosco convergence and as a consequence we obtain convergence of the solutions to the evolution problems. For the limit problem we show an interpretation in terms of optimal mass transportation and provide examples of explicit solutions for some particular data.
In this paper we prove Schauder estimates at the boundary for sub-Laplacian type operators in Carnot groups. While internal Schauder estimates have been deeply studied, up to now subriemannian estimates at the boundary are known only in the Heisenberg groups. The proof of these estimates in the Heisenberg setting, due to Jerison, is based on the Fourier transform technique and can not be repeated in general Lie groups. After the result of Jerison no new contribution to the boundary problem has been provided. In this paper we introduce a new approach, which allows to built a Poisson kernel star…
We obtain necessary and sufficient existence conditions for solutions of the boundary value problem $$ Δ_p u = f \quad \mbox{on } M, \quad \left. \left| \nabla u \right|^{p - 2} \frac{\partial u}{\partial ν} \right|_{ \partial M } = h, $$ where $p > 1$ is a real number, $M$ is a connected oriented complete Riemannian manifold with boundary, and $ν$ is the external normal vector to $\partial M$.
(Version 3) We study the problem of finding functions, defined within and on an ellipse, whose Laplacian is -1 and which satisfy a homogeneous Robin boundary condition on the ellipse. The parameter in the Robin condition is denoted by beta. The general solution and various asymptotic approximations are obtained. The integral of the solution over the ellipse, denoted by Q, is a quantity of interest in some physical applications. The dependence of Q on beta and the ellipse geometry is found. Several methods are used.
In this paper we derive boundary integral identities for the bi-Laplacian eigenvalue problems under Dirichlet, Navier and simply-supported boundary conditions. By using these identities, we first obtain the uniqueness criteria for the solutions of the bi-Laplacian eigenvalue problems, and then prove that each eigenvalue of the problem with simply-supported boundary condition increases strictly with Poisson's ratio, thereby showing that each natural frequency of a simply-supported vibrating plate increases strictly with Poisson's ratio. In addition, we obtain boundary integral representations f…
The solutions of boundary value problems for the Laplacian and the bilaplacian exhibit very different qualitative behaviors. Particularly, the failure of general maximum principles for the bilaplacian implies that solutions of higher-order problems are less rigid and more complex. One way to better understand this transition is to study the intermediate Dirichlet problem in terms of fractional Laplacians. This survey aims to be an introduction to these type of problems; in particular, the different pointwise notions for these operators is introduced considering a suitable natural extension of …
We investigate unique continuation properties and asymptotic behaviour at boundary points for solutions to a class of elliptic equations involving the spectral fractional Laplacian. An extension procedure leads us to study a degenerate or singular equation on a cylinder, with a homogeneous Dirichlet boundary condition on the lateral surface and a non homogeneous Neumann condition on the basis. For the extended problem, by an Almgren-type monotonicity formula and a blow-up analysis, we classify the local asymptotic profiles at the edge where the transition between boundary conditions occurs. Pa…
In this paper we show how to use a Tug-of-War game to obtain existence of a viscosity solution to the infinity laplacian with non-homogeneous mixed boundary conditions. For a Lipschitz and positive function $g$ there exists a viscosity solution of the mixed boundary value problem, $$ \{\begin{array}{ll} \displaystyle -Δ_{\infty}u(x)=0\quad & \text{in} Ω, \displaystyle \frac{\partial u}{\partial n}(x)= g (x)\quad & \text{on} Γ_N, \displaystyle u(x)= 0 \quad & \text{on} Γ_D. \end{array}. $$
We study the regularity of the free boundary in the obstacle problem for the fractional Laplacian under the assumption that the obstacle $φ$ satisfies $Δφ\leq 0$ near the contact region. Our main result establishes that the free boundary consists of a set of regular points, which is known to be a $(n-1)$-dimensional $C^{1,α}$ manifold by the results in \cite{CSS}, and a set of singular points, which we prove to be contained in a union of $k$-dimensional $C^1$-submanifold, $k=0,\ldots,n-1$. Such a complete result on the structure of the free boundary was known only in the case of the classical …
We prove the attainability of the best constant in the fractional Hardy--Sobolev inequality with boundary singularity for the Spectral Dirichlet Laplacian. The main assumption is the average concavity of the boundary at the origin.
