Nearest neighbor random walks in the quarter plane that are absorbed when reaching the boundary are studied. The cases of positive and zero drift are considered. Absorption probabilities at a given time and at a given site are made explicit. The following asymptotics for these random walks starting from a given point $(n_0,m_0)$ are computed : that of probabilities of being absorbed at a given site $(i,0)$ [resp. $(0,j)$] as $i\to \infty$ [resp. $j \to \infty$], that of the distribution's tail of absorption time at x-axis [resp. y-axis], that of the Green functions at site $(i,j)$ when $i,j\to \infty$ and $j/i \to \tan γ$ for $γ\in [0, π/2]$. These results give the Martin boundary of the process and in particular the suitable Doob $h$-transform in order to condition the process never to reach the boundary. They also show that this $h$-transformed process is equal in distribution to the limit as $n\to \infty$ of the process conditioned by not being absorbed at time $n$. The main tool used here is complex analysis.
In this article we are interested in finding positive discrete harmonic functions with Dirichlet conditions in three quadrants. Whereas planar lattice (random) walks in the quadrant have been well studied, the case of walks avoiding a quadrant has been developed lately. We extend the method in the quarter plane -- resolution of a functional equation via boundary value problem using a conformal mapping -- to the three-quarter plane applying the strategy of splitting the domain into two symmetric convex cones. We obtain a simple explicit expression for the algebraic generating function of harmon…
Using Mazur's theorem on torsions of elliptic curves, an upper bound 24 for the order of the finite Galois group $\mathcal{H}$ associated with weighted walks in the quarter plane $\mathbb{Z}^2_+$ is obtained. The explicit criterion for $\mathcal{H}$ to have order 4 or 6 is rederived by simple geometric argument. Using division polynomials, a recursive criterion for $\mathcal{H}$ having order $4m$ or $4m+2$ is also obtained. As a corollary, explicit criterion for $\mathcal{H}$ to have order 8 is given and is much simpler than the existing method.
In this work, we focus on the stationary analysis of a specific class of continuous time Markov-modulated reflected random walks in the quarter plane with applications in the modelling of two-node Markov-modulated queueing networks with coupled queues. The transition rates of the two-dimensional process depend on the state of a finite state Markovian background process. Such a modulation is space homogeneous in the set of inner states of the two-dimensional lattice but may be different in the set of states at its boundaries. To obtain the stationary distribution, we apply the power series appr…
This work deals with the stationary analysis of two-dimensional partially homogeneous nearest-neighbour random walks. Such type of random walks are characterized by the fact that the one-step transition probabilities are functions of the state-space. We show that its stationary behaviour is investigated by solving a finite system of linear equations, two matrix functional equations, and a functional equation with the aid of the theory of Riemann (-Hilbert) boundary value problems. This work is strongly motivated by emerging applications in flow level performance of wireless networks that give …
We consider discrete (time and space) random walks confined to the quarter plane, with jumps only in directions $(i,j)$ with $i+j \geq 0$ and small negative jumps, i.e., $i,j \geq -1$. These walks are called singular, and were recently intensively studied from a combinatorial point of view. In this paper, we show how the compensation approach introduced in the 90ies by Adan, Wessels and Zijm may be applied to compute positive harmonic functions with Dirichlet boundary conditions. In particular, in case the random walks have a drift with positive coordinates, we derive an explicit formula for t…
We construct harmonic functions in the quarter plane for discrete Laplace operators. In particular, the functions are conditioned to vanish on the boundary and the Laplacians admit coefficients associated with transition probabilities of non-symmetric random walks. By solving a boundary value problem for generating functions of harmonic functions, we deduce explicit expressions for the generating functions in terms of conformal mappings. These mappings are yielded from a conformal welding problem with quasisymmetric shift and contain information about the growth of harmonic functions. Further,…
We consider Activated Random Walks on arbitrary finite networks, with particles being inserted at random and absorbed at the boundary. Despite the non-reversibility of the dynamics and the lack of knowledge on the stationary distribution, we explicitly determine the relaxation time of the process, and prove that separation cutoff is equivalent to the product condition. We also provide sharp estimates on the center and width of the cutoff window. Finally, we illustrate those results by establishing explicit separation cutoffs on various networks, including: (i) large finite subgraphs of any fix…
Let $X = (X_1, X_2)$ be a 2-dimensional random variable and $X(n), n \in \mathbb{N}$ a sequence of i.i.d. copies of $X$. The associated random walk is $S(n)= X(1) + \cdots +X(n)$. The corresponding absorbed-reflected walk $W(n), n \in \mathbb{N}$ in the first quadrant is given by $W(0) = x \in \mathbb{R}_+^2$ and $W(n) = \max \{ 0, W(n-1) - X(n) \}$, where the maximum is taken coordinate-wise. This is often called the Lindley process and models the waiting times in a two-server queue. We characterize recurrence of this process, assuming suitable, rather mild moment conditions on $X$. It turns …
We deal with a discrete-time two-dimensional quasi-birth-and-death process (2d-QBD process for short) on $\mathbb{Z}_+^2\times S_0$, where $S_0$ is a finite set, and give a complete expression for the asymptotic decay function of the stationary tail probabilities in an arbitrary direction. The 2d-QBD process is a kind of random walk in the quarter plane with a background process. In our previous paper (Queueing Systems, vol. 102, pp. 227-267, 2022), we have obtained the asymptotic decay rate of the stationary tail probabilities in an arbitrary direction and clarified that if the asymptotic dec…
In this paper we consider three classes of interacting particle systems on $\mathbb Z$: independent random walks, the exclusion process, and the inclusion process. We allow particles to switch their jump rate (the rate identifies the type of particle) between $1$ (fast particles) and $ε\in[0,1]$ (slow particles). The switch between the two jump rates happens at rate $γ\in(0,\infty)$. In the exclusion process, the interaction is such that each site can be occupied by at most one particle of each type. In the inclusion process, the interaction takes places between particles of the same type at d…
