A closed subgroup H of the affine, algebraic group G is called observable if G/H is a quasi-affine algebraic variety. In this paper we define the notion of an observable subgroup of the affine, algebraic monoid M. We prove that a subgroup H of G is observable in M if and only if H is closed in M and there are "enough" H-semiinvariant functions in K[M]. We show also that a closed, normal subgroup H of G (the unit group of M) is observable in M if and only if it is closed in M. In such a case there exists a determinant $χ: M \to K$ such that $H\subset ker(χ)$. As an application, we show that in this case the affinized quotient $M/_{aff} H$ of M by H is an affine algebraic monoid scheme with unit group G/H.
We study the geometry of algebraic monoids. We prove that the group of invertible elements of an irreducible algebraic monoid is an algebraic group, open in the monoid. Moreover, if this group is reductive, then the monoid is affine. We then give a combinatorial classification of reductive monoids by means of the theory of spherical varieties.
Let $G$ be a connected reductive group over a perfect field $k$. We study a certain normal reductive monoid $\overline M$ associated to a parabolic $k$-subgroup $P$ of $G$. The group of units of $\overline M$ is the Levi factor $M$ of $P$. We show that $\overline M$ is a retract of the affine closure of the quasi-affine variety $G/U(P)$. Fixing a parabolic $P^-$ opposite to $P$, we prove that the affine closure of $G/U(P)$ is a retract of the affine closure of the boundary degeneration $(G \times G)/(P \times_M P^-)$. Using idempotents, we relate $\overline M$ to the Vinberg semigroup of $G$. …
We show that any normal algebraic monoid is an extension of an abelian variety by a normal affine algebraic monoid. This extends (and builds on) Chevalley's structure theorem for algebraic groups.
We classify commutative algebraic monoid structures on normal affine surfaces over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero. The answer is given in two languages: comultiplications and Cox coordinates. The result follows from a more general classification of commutative monoid structures of rank 0, n-1 or n on a normal affine variety of dimension n.
We study commutative associative polynomial operations $\mathbb{A}^n\times\mathbb{A}^n\to\mathbb{A}^n$ with unit on the affine space $\mathbb{A}^n$ over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero. A classification of such operations is obtained up to dimension 3. Several series of operations are constructed in arbitrary dimension. Also we explore a connection between commutative algebraic monoids on affine spaces and additive actions on toric varieties.
We describe the local structure of an irreducible algebraic monoid $M$ at an idempotent element $e$. When $e$ is minimal, we show that $M$ is an induced variety over the kernel $MeM$ (a homogeneous space) with fibre the two-sided stabilizer $M_e$ (a connected affine monoid having a zero element and a dense unit group). This yields the irreducibility of stabilizers and centralizers of idempotents when $M$ is normal, and criteria for normality and smoothness of an arbitrary $M$. Also, we show that $M$ is an induced variety over an abelian variety, with fiber a connected affine monoid having a de…
Let M be an irreducible normal algebraic monoid with unit group G. It is known that G admits a Rosenlicht decomposition, G=G_antG_aff, where G_ant is the maximal anti-affine subgroup of G, and G_aff the maximal normal connected affine subgroup of G. In this paper we show that this decomposition extends to a decomposition M=G_antM_aff, where M_aff is the affine submonoid M_aff=\bar{G_aff}. We then use this decomposition to calculate $\mathcal{O}(M)$ in terms of $\mathcal{O}(M_aff)$ and G_aff, G_ant\subset G. In particular, we determine when M is an anti-affine monoid, that is when $\mathcal{O}(…
In 2021, Dzhunusov and Zaitseva classified two-dimensional normal affine commutative algebraic monoids. In this work, we extend this classification to noncommutative monoid structures on normal affine surfaces. We prove that two-dimensional algebraic monoids are toric. We also show how to find all monoid structures on a normal toric surface. Every such structure is induced by a comultiplication formula involving Demazure roots. We also give descriptions of opposite monoids, quotient monoids, and boundary divisors.
We present some fundamental results on (possibly nonlinear) algebraic semigroups and monoids. These include a version of Chevalley's structure theorem for irreducible algebraic monoids, and the description of all algebraic semigroup structures on curves and complete varieties.
We study the algebraic $K$-theory and Grothendieck-Witt theory of proto-exact categories of vector bundles over monoid schemes. Our main results are the complete description of the algebraic $K$-theory space of an integral monoid scheme $X$ in terms of its Picard group $\operatorname{Pic}(X)$ and pointed monoid of regular functions $Γ(X, \mathcal{O}_X)$ and a description of the Grothendieck-Witt space of $X$ in terms of an additional involution on $\operatorname{Pic}(X)$. We also prove space-level projective bundle formulae in both settings.
In this paper we study regular irreducible algebraic monoids over $\fldc$ equipped with the euclidean topology. It is shown that, in such monoids, the Green classes and the spaces of idempotents in the Green classes all have natural manifold structures. The interactions of these manifold structures and the semigroup structures in these monoids have been investigated. Relations between these manifolds and Grassmann manifolds have been established. A generalisation of a result on the dimension of the manifold of rank $k$ idempotents in the semigroup of linear endomorphisms over $\fldc$ has been …
By a generalized Tannaka-Krein reconstruction we associate to the admissible representations of the category O of a Kac-Moody algebra, and its category of admissible duals a monoid with a coordinate ring. The Kac-Moody group is the Zariski open dense unit group of this monoid. The restriction of the coordinate ring to the Kac-Moody group is the algebra of strongly regular functions introduced by Kac and Peterson. This monoid has similar structural properties as a reductive algebraic monoid. In particular it is unit regular, its idempotents related to the faces of the Tits cone. It has Bruhat a…
Let $k$ be a field of characteristic zero, and let $X$ be a projective variety embedded into a projective space over $k$. For two natural numbers $r$ and $d$ let $C_{r,d}(X)$ be the Chow scheme parametrizing effective cycles of dimension $r$ and degree $d$ on the variety $X$. An effective $r$-cycle of minimal degree on $X$ gives rise to a chain of embeddings of $C_{r,d}(X)$ into $C_{r,d+1}(X)$, whose colimit is the connective Chow monoid $C_r^{\infty }(X)$ of $r$-cycles on $X$. Let $BC_r^{\infty }(X)$ be the motivic classifying space of this monoid. In the paper we establish an isomorphism bet…
Consider an algebraic semigroup $S$ and its closed subscheme of idempotents, $E(S)$. When $S$ is commutative, we show that $E(S)$ is finite and reduced; if in addition $S$ is irreducible, then $E(S)$ is contained in a smallest closed irreducible subsemigroup of $S$, and this subsemigroup is an affine toric variety. It follows that $E(S)$ (viewed as a partially ordered set) is the set of faces of a rational polyhedral convex cone. On the other hand, when $S$ is an irreducible algebraic monoid, we show that $E(S)$ is smooth, and its connected components are conjugacy classes of the unit group.
In this note, we show that the epimorphic subgroups of an algebraic group are exactly the pull-backs of the epimorphic subgroups of its affinization. We also obtain epimorphicity criteria for subgroups of affine algebraic groups, which generalize a result of Bien and Borel. Moreover, we extend the affinization theorem for algebraic groups to homogeneous spaces.
In this work we show that the homogeneous space of an affine algebraic group $G$ by a one-dimensional unipotent subgroup $H$ is affine if and only if the subgroup is not contained in any reductive subgroup of $G$.
In this paper, we study affine commutative algebraic monoid structures on affine spaces over an arbitrary field of characteristic zero. We obtain full classification of such structures on $\mathbb{A}_K^2$ and $\mathbb{A}_K^3$ and describe some generalizations on $\mathbb{A}_K^n$ for any dimension $n$.
We give the classification of the maximal infinite algebraic subgroups of the real Cremona group of the plane up to conjugacy and present a parametrisation space of each conjugacy class. Moreover, we show that the real plane Cremona group is not generated by a countable union of its infinite algebraic subgroups.
We give conditions for the Mayer-Vietoris property to hold for the algebraic K-theory of blow-up squares of toric varieties in any characteristic, using the theory of monoid schemes. These conditions are used to relate algebraic K-theory to topological cyclic homology in characteristic p. To achieve our goals, we develop for monoid schemes many notions from classical algebraic geometry, such as separated and proper maps.
We prove that for each $n \geq 2$, there exists a ruled variety X of dimension n such that Bir(X) contains connected algebraic subgroups which are not lying in a maximal one.
Given a connected simply connected semisimple group G and a connected spherical subgroup K we determine the generators of the extended weight monoid of G/K, based on the homogeneous spherical datum of G/K. Let H be a reductive subgroup of G and let P be a parabolic subgroup of H for which G/P is spherical. A triple (G,H,P) with this property is called multiplicity free system and we determine the generators of the extended weight monoid of G/P explicitly in the cases where (G,H) is strictly indecomposable. The extended weight monoid of G/P describes the induction from H to G of an irreducible …
An algebraic version of a theorem due to Quillen is proved. More precisely, for a ground field k we consider the motivic stable homotopy category SH(k) of P^1-spectra equipped with the symmetric monoidal structure described in arXiv:0709.3905v1 [math.AG]. The algebraic cobordism P^1-spectrum MGL is considered as a commutative monoid equipped with a canonical orientation. For a commutative monoid E in the category SH(k) we identify the set of monoid homomorphisms from MGL to E in the motivic stable homotopy category with the set of all orientations of E. This result was stated originally in a s…
Given a connected reductive complex algebraic group $G$ and a spherical subgroup $H \subset G$, the extended weight monoid $\widehat Λ^+_G(G/H)$ encodes the $G$-module structures on spaces of global sections of all $G$-linearized line bundles on $G/H$. Assuming that $G$ is semisimple and simply connected and $H$ is specified by a regular embedding in a parabolic subgroup $P \subset G$, in this paper we obtain a description of $\widehat Λ^+_G(G/H)$ via the set of simple spherical roots of $G/H$ together with certain combinatorial data explicitly computed from the pair $(P,H)$. As an application…
Let $G$ be a connected semisimple algebraic group and let $H \subset G$ be a connected reductive subgroup. Given a flag variety $X$ of $G$, a result of Vinberg and Kimelfeld asserts that $H$ acts spherically on $X$ if and only if for every irreducible representation $R$ of $G$ realized in the space of sections of a homogeneous line bundle on $X$ the restriction of $R$ to $H$ is multiplicity free. In this case, the information on restrictions to $H$ of all such irreducible representations of $G$ is encoded in a monoid, which we call the restricted branching monoid. In this paper, we review the …
We construct algebraic cobordism spectra MSL and MSp. They are commutative monoids in the category of symmetric T^{2}- spectra. The spectrum MSp comes with a natural symplectic orientation given either by a tautological Thom class th^{MSp} in MSp^{4,2}(MSp_{2}), a tautological Borel class b_{1}^{MSp} in MSp^{4,2}(HP^{\infty}) or any of six other equivalent structures. For a commutative monoid E in the category SH(S) we prove that assignment g -> g(th^{MSp}) identifies the set of homomorphisms of monoids g : MSp -> E in the motivic stable homotopy category SH(S) with the set of tautological Tho…
We determine when an antiinvolution on an adjoint semisimple linear algebraic group extends to an antiinvolution on a $J$-irreducible monoid. Using this information, we study a special class of compactifications of symmetric varieties. Extending the work of Springer on involutions, we describe the parametrizing sets of Borel orbits in these special embeddings.
We investigate for which linear-algebraic groups (over the complex numbers or any local field) there exists subgroups which are dense in the Zariski topology, but discrete in the Hausdorff topology. For instance, such subgroups exist for every non-solvable complex group.
Let $G$ be a semisimple affine algebraic group defined over a field $k$ of characteristic zero. We describe all the maximal connected solvable subgroups of $G$, defined over $k$, up to conjugation by rational points of $G$.
We investigate Levi subgroups of a connected reductive algebraic group G, over a ground field K. We parametrize their conjugacy classes in terms of sets of simple roots and we prove that two Levi K-subgroups of G are rationally conjugate if and only if they are geometrically conjugate. These results are generalized to arbitrary connected linear algebraic K-groups. In that setting the appropriate analogue of a Levi subgroup is derived from the notion of a pseudo-parabolic subgroup.
We develop a structure theory of connected solvable spherical subgroups in semisimple algebraic groups. Based on this theory, we obtain an explicit classification of all such subgroups up to conjugation.
