In this work we study the properties of maximal and minimal curves of genus 3 over finite fields with discriminant -19. We prove that any such curve can be given by an explicit equation of certain form. Using these equations we obtain a table of maximal and minimal curves over finite fields with discriminant -19 of cardinality up to 997. We also show that existence of a maximal curve implies that there is no minimal curve and vice versa.
We compute explicit rational models for some Hilbert modular surfaces corresponding to square discriminants, by connecting them to moduli spaces of elliptic K3 surfaces. Since they parametrize decomposable principally polarized abelian surfaces, they are also moduli spaces for genus-2 curves covering elliptic curves via a map of fixed degree. We thereby extend classical work of Jacobi, Hermite, Bolza etc., and more recent work of Kuhn, Frey, Kani, Shaska, Völklein, Magaard and others, producing explicit families of reducible Jacobians. In particular, we produce a birational model for the modul…
We consider generalizations of Szpiro's classical discriminant conjecture to hyperelliptic curves over a number field $K$, and to smooth, projective and geometrically connected curves $X$ over $K$ of genus at least one. The main results give effective exponential versions of the generalized conjectures for some curves, including all curves $X$ of genus one or two. We obtain in particular exponential versions of Szpiro's classical discriminant conjecture for elliptic curves over $K$. In course of our proofs we establish explicit results for certain Arakelov invariants of hyperelliptic curves (e…
An invariant of a model of genus one curve is a polynomial in the coefficients of the model that is stable under certain linear transformations. The classical example of an invariant is the discriminant, which characterizes the singularity of models. The ring of invariants of genus one models over a field is generated by two elements. Fisher normalized these invariants for models of degree n=2,3,4 in such a way that these invariants are moreover defined over the integers. We provide an alternative way to express these normalized invariants using modular forms. This method relies on a direct co…
The Hasse-Weil-Serre bound is improved for curves of low genera over finite fields with discriminant in {-3,-4,-7,-8,-11,-19} by studying optimal curves.
We prove a genus formula for modular curves of $D$-elliptic sheaves. We use this formula to show that the reductions of modular curves of $D$-elliptic sheaves attain the Drinfeld-Vladut bound as the degree of the discriminant of $D$ tends to infinity.
The purpose of this note is to suggest an analogue for genus 2 curves of part of Gross and Zagier's work on elliptic curves. Experimentally, for genus 2 curves with CM by a quartic CM field K, it appears that primes dividing the denominators of the discriminants of the Igusa class polynomials all have the property 1) that they are bounded by d, the absolute value of the discriminant of K, and 2) that they divide d-x^2, for some integer x whose square is less than d. A slightly stronger condition is given in Section 3. Such primes are primes of bad reduction for the genus 2 curve and primes of …
We compute the canonical model of the cover of Shimura curves $X_0(2) \to X(1)$ for the cubic field of discriminant 13^2 described at the end of Elkies' paper "Shimura curves for level 3 subgroups of the (2,3,7) triangle group". Last, we list the coordinates of some rational CM points on X(1).
We outline a general algorithm for computing an explicit model over a number field of any curve of genus 2 whose (unpolarized) Jacobian is isomorphic to the product of two elliptic curves with CM by the same order in an imaginary quadratic field. We give the details and some examples for the case where the order has prime discriminant and class number one
We prove that the discriminant of a nonsingular space curve of genus $g\geq 2$ is stable with respect to the standard action of the special linear group.
Let $C$ be a hyperelliptic curve of genus $g$ over the fraction field $K$ of a discrete valuation ring $R$. Assume that the residue field $k$ of $R$ is perfect and that $\mathrm{char}\ k > 2g+1$. Let $S = \mathrm{Spec}\ R$. Let $X$ be the minimal proper regular model of $C$ over $S$. Let $\mathrm{Art}\ (C/K)$ denote the Artin conductor of the $S$-scheme $X$ and let $ν(Δ_C)$ denote the minimal discriminant of $C$. We prove that $-\mathrm{Art}\ (C/K) \leq ν(Δ_C)$. The key ingredients are a combinatorial refinement of the discriminant introduced in this paper (called the metric tree) and a recent…
We present explicit models for non-elliptic genus one Shimura curves X_0(D, N) with Gamma_0(N)-level structure arising from an indefinite quaternion algebra of reduced discriminant D, and Atkin-Lehner quotients of them. In addition, we discuss and extend Jordan's work in his Ph. D Thesis on points with complex multiplication on Shimura curves.
Let $C$ be a hyperelliptic curve of genus $g$ over the fraction field $K$ of a discrete valuation ring $R$. Assume that the residue field $k$ of $R$ is perfect and that $\mathop{\textrm{char}} k \neq 2$. Assume that the Weierstrass points of $C$ are $K$-rational. Let $S = \mathop{\textrm{Spec}} R$. Let $\mathcal{X}$ be the minimal proper regular model of $C$ over $S$. Let $\mathop{\textrm{Art}} (\mathcal{X}/S)$ denote the Artin conductor of the $S$-scheme $\mathcal{X}$ and let $ν(Δ)$ denote the minimal discriminant of $C$. We prove that $-\mathop{\textrm{Art}} (\mathcal{X}/S) \leq ν(Δ)$. As a …
We give a criterion to distinguish between a genus three Jacobian and its [-1] twist in terms of the product of the 36 even theta nulls. We also express the product of the 36 theta nulls in terms of the discriminant of a genus three curve. The results are arithmetic in nature and thus add to previous work over C on the product of the even theta nulls. They generalize previous work of Ritzenthaler and Lachaud for Abelian threefolds which are (2,2,2) isogenous to a product of elliptic curves. This answers a 2003 of letter of Jean-Pierre Serre to Jaap Top.
Hausel introduced a commutative algebra -- the multiplicity algebra -- associated to a fixed point of the C^*-action on the Higgs bundle moduli space. Here we describe this algebra for a fixed point consisting of a very stable rank 2 vector bundle and zero Higgs field for a curve of low genus. Geometrically, the relations in the algebra are described by a family of quadrics and we focus on the discriminant of this family, providing a new viewpoint on the moduli space of stable bundles. The discriminant in our examples demonstrates that as the bundle varies, we obtain a continuous variation in …
The discriminant of a smooth plane cubic curve over the complex numbers can be written as a product of theta functions. This provides an important connection between algebraic and analytic objects. In this paper, we perform a new approach to obtain this classical result by using determinantal representations. More precisely, one can represent a non-singular cubic form as the determinant of a matrix whose elements are linear forms. Theta functions naturally appear in this representation and thus in the discriminant of the cubic.
Let F be the cubic field of discriminant -23 and O its ring of integers. Let Gamma be the arithmetic group GL_2 (O), and for any ideal n subset O let Gamma_0 (n) be the congruence subgroup of level n. In a previous paper, two of us (PG and DY) computed the cohomology of various Gamma_0 (n), along with the action of the Hecke operators. The goal of that paper was to test the modularity of elliptic curves over F. In the present paper, we complement and extend this prior work in two ways. First, we tabulate more elliptic curves than were found in our prior work by using various heuristics ("old a…
We give an Arakelov theoretic proof of the equality of conductor and discriminant for arithmetic surfaces over number fields. This was first proved by T. Saito for relative curves over discrete valuation rings.
We compute a formula for the discriminant of tautological bundles on symmetric powers of a complex smooth projective curve. It follows that the Bogomolov inequality does not give a new restriction to stability of these tautological bundles. It only rules out tautological bundles which are already known to have the structure sheaf as a destabilising subbundle.
We prove that the Poincare' polynomial of the moduli space of smooth genus 4 curves is 1+t^2+t^4+t^5. We show this by producing a stratification of the space, such that all strata are geometric quotients of complements of discriminants.
This paper is devoted to the classification of connected components of Prym eigenform loci in the strata H(2,2)^odd and H(1,1,2) in the Abelian differentials bundle in genus 3. These loci, discovered by McMullen are GL^+(2,R)-invariant submanifolds (of complex dimension 3) that project to the locus of Riemann surfaces whose Jacobian variety has a factor admitting real multiplication by some quadratic order Ord_D. It turns out that these subvarieties can be classified by the discriminant D of the corresponding quadratic orders. However there algebraic varieties are not necessarily irreducible. …
In this note we give examples of Zariski's pairs $B_{1,m}, B_{2,m}$ ($m \in N$ and $m \geq 5$) of plane cuspidal curves such that (i) $B_{i,m}$ is the discriminant curve of a generic morphism $f_{i,m}:S_i \to P^2$, $i=1, 2$, (ii) $S_1$ and $S_2$ are homeomorphic surfaces of general type, (iii) $f_{i,m}$ is given by linear three-dimensional subsystem of the mth canonical class of $S_i$.
Let $(l,f):(C^2,0)\rightarrow (C^2,0)$ be the germ of a holomorphic mapping such that $l=0$ is a smooth curve which is not a branch of the singular curve $f=0$. The direct image of the critical locus of this mapping is called the discriminant curve. In this paper we study the pairs $(l,f)$ for which the discriminant curve is non-degenerate in the Kouchnirenko sense.
In this paper, we develop a new approach to the discrimi-nant of a complete intersection curve in the 3-dimensional projective space. By relying on the resultant theory, we first prove a new formula that allows us to define this discrimi-nant without ambiguity and over any commutative ring, in particular in any characteristic. This formula also provides a new method for evaluating and computing this discrimi-nant efficiently, without the need to introduce new variables as with the well-known Cayley trick. Then, we obtain new properties and computational rules such as the covariance and the inv…
For any number field, we prove that there exists a stacky curve of genus one half defined over the ring of its integers violating the local-global principle for integral points.
Let $(f, g)$ be a pair of complex analytic functions on a singular analytic space $X$. We give ``the correct'' definition of the relative polar curve of $(f, g)$, and we give a very formal generalization of Lê's attaching result, which relates the relative polar curve to the relative cohomology of the Milnor fiber modulo a hyperplane slice. We also give the technical arguments which allow one to work with a derived category version of the discriminant and Cerf diagram of a pair of functions. From this, we derive a number of generalizations of results which are classically proved using the disc…
We explain how we computed equations for all genus 4 curves defined of the field with 2 elements, up-to-isomorphism, and some of the data we obtained. We give descriptions also of nice models for genus 4 curves over characteristic 2 fields, in both the hyperelliptic case and the trigonal case.
We present a table containing the maximal number of rational points on a genus 3 curve over a field of cardinality q, for all q<100. Also, some remarks on Frobenius non-classical quartics over finite fields are given.
One of the big questions in the area of curves over finite fields concerns the distribution of the numbers of points: Which numbers occur as the number of points on a curve of genus $g$? The same question can be asked of various subclasses of curves. In this article we classify the possibilities for the number of points on genus 4 hyperelliptic supersingular curves over finite fields of order $2^n$, $n$ odd.
We study the problem of efficiently constructing a curve C of genus 2 over a finite field F for which either the curve C itself or its Jacobian has a prescribed number N of F-rational points. In the case of the Jacobian, we show that any `CM-construction' to produce the required genus-2 curves necessarily takes time exponential in the size of its input. On the other hand, we provide an algorithm for producing a genus-2 curve with a given number of points that, heuristically, takes polynomial time for most input values. We illustrate the practical applicability of this algorithm by constructing…
We will describe the topological type of the discriminant curve of the morphism $(\ell, f)$, where $\ell$ is a smooth curve and $f$ is an irreducible curve (branch) of multiplicity less than five or a branch that the difference between its Milnor number and Tjurina number is less than 3. We prove that for a branch of these families, the topological type of the discriminant curve is determined by the semigroup, the Zariski invariant and at most two other analytical invariants of the branch.
We show how to calculate the Euler characteristic of a local system associated to an irreducible representation of the symplectic group of genus 3 on the moduli space of curves of genus 3 and the moduli space of principally polarized abelian varieties of dimension 3.
The Bogomolov Conjecture is a finiteness statement about algebraic points of small height on a smooth complete curve defined over a global field. We verify an effective form of the Bogomolov Conjecture for all curves of genus at most 4 defined over a function field of characteristic zero. We recover the known result for genus 2 curves and in many cases improve upon the known bound for genus 3 curves. For many curves of genus 4 with bad reduction, the conjecture was previously unproved.
We give lower bounds for the degree of the discriminant with respect to y of separable polynomials f in K[x,y] over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero. Depending on the invariants involved in the lower bound, we give a geometrical characterisation of those polynomials having minimal discriminant, and give an explicit construction of all such polynomials in many cases. In particular, we show that irreducible monic polynomials with minimal discriminant coincide with coordinate polynomials. We obtain analogous partial results for the case of nonmonic or reducible polynomials by …
The discriminant, $D$, in the base of a miniversal deformation of an irreducible plane curve singularity, is partitioned according to the genus of the (singular) fibre, or, equivalently, by the sum of the delta invariants of the singular points of the fibre. The members of the partition are known as the {\it Severi strata}. The smallest is the $δ$-constant stratum, $D(δ)$, where the genus of the fibre is $0$. It is well known, by work of Givental' and Varchenko, to be Lagrangian with respect to the symplectic form $Ω$ obtained by pulling back the intersection form on the cohomology of the fibr…
In this paper we show that in a stable range the cohomology of the space of regular algebraic sections of a line bundle $\mathscr{L}$on a curve $X$ is isomorphic to the cohomology of the space of regular $C^{\infty}$sections of the same line bundle.
For affine plane curves defined over the rationals of genus at least two, we show that a decision algorithm for the existence of solutions also yields a search algorithm for all solutions.
In this paper we give a formal expression to the limits of dual plane curves by using the method introduced by Katz. As an application, we give a formula to compute the vertices of $C(0)$ a plane curve in $C(t)$ a one-parameter family of plane curves and we show that those vertices depend only on the first $τ$ terms of that family, where $τ$ is the general type of $C(t)$.
We study singularities obtained by the contraction of the maximal divisor in compact (non kaehlerian) surfaces which contain global spherical shells. These singularities are of genus 1 or 2, may be Q-Gorenstein, numerically Gorenstein or Gorenstein. A family of polynomials depending on the configuration of the curves computes the discriminant of the quadratic forms of these singularities. We introduce a multiplicative branch topological invariant which determines the twisting of a non-vanishing holomorphic 1-form on the complement of the singular point.
Higher rank Brill-Noether theory is completely known for curves of genus $\leq 3$. In this paper, we investigate the theory for curves of genus 4. Some of our results apply to curves of arbitrary genus.
We study real double covers of $\mathbb P^1\times\mathbb P^2$ branched over a $(2,2)$-divisor, which have the structure of a conic bundle threefold with smooth quartic discriminant curve via the second projection. In each isotopy class of smooth plane quartics, we construct examples where the total space of the conic bundle is rational. For five of the six isotopy classes we construct $\mathbb C$-rational examples that have obstructions to rationality over $\mathbb R$, and for the sixth class, we show that the models we consider are all rational. Moreover, for three of the five classes with ir…
We study the moduli space of genus 3 hyperelliptic curves via the weighted projective space of binary octavics. This enables us to create a database of all genus 3 hyperelliptic curves defined over $\mathbb Q$, of weighted moduli height $\mathcal h =1$.
We compute equations for a Hurwitz curve of genus 17 and we conclude that the canonical ideal of any Hurwitz curve of genus 14 or 17 is generated by quadrics.
We determine all genus 2 curves, defined over $\mathbb C$, which have simultaneously degree 2 and 3 elliptic subcovers. The locus of such curves has three irreducible 1-dimensional genus zero components in $\mathcal M_2$. For each component we find a rational parametrization and construct the equation of the corresponding genus 2 curve and its elliptic subcovers in terms of the parameterization. Such families of genus 2 curves are determined for the first time. Furthermore, we prove that there are only finitely many genus 2 curves (up to $\mathbb C$-isomorphism) defined over $\mathbb Q$, which…
