A polycrystalline sample of FeSe, which adopts the tetragonal PbO-type structure (P4/nmm) at room temperature, has been prepared using solid state reaction. We have investigated pressure-induced structural changes in tetragonal FeSe at varying hydrostatic pressures up to 0.6 GPa in the orthorhombic (T = 50 K) and tetragonal (T = 190 K) phases using high resolution neutron powder diffraction. We report that the structure is quite compressible with a Bulk modulus around 31 GPa to 33 GPa and that the pressure response is anisotropic with a larger compressibility along the c-axis. Key bond angles of the SeFe4 pyramids and FeSe4 tetrahedra are also determined as a function of pressure.
We have synthesized a Ba-doped FeSe superconductor using liquid ammonia, and investigated in detail the structure and composition of the Ba-FeSe phase. In the superconducting phase, both the Tc and the shielding fraction are almost unchanged even if the nominal composition of Ba is varied in the region from 0.3 to 0.7. The optimized Tc is 38.8 K. We have determined the structure of the superconducting phase with X-ray powder diffraction (using synchrotron radiation) and here describe the co-intercalation of Ba and NH3 molecules between the FeSe layers.
The newly discovered superconductor FeSe1-x (x=0.08, Tconset=13.5 K at ambient pressure rising to 27 K at 1.48 GPa) exhibits a structural phase transition from tetragonal to orthorhombic below 70 K at ambient pressure - the crystal structure in the superconducting state shows remarkable similarities to that of the REFeAsO1-xFx (RE = rare earth) superconductors
Inelastic neutron-scattering experiments have been carried out on polycrystalline samples of the FeSe$_{1-x}$ superconductors. We report the phonon density of states for FeSe$_{1-x}$ with Tc$\approx$8 K. The phonon cutoff frequency is observed around 40 meV. No significant change is observed across the superconducting transition. The measurements support the published first-principles calculations [A. Subedi et al., Phys. Rev. B \textbf{78}, 134514 (2008)].
The iron-based superconductor FeSe offers a unique possibility to study the interplay of superconductivity with purely nematic as well magnetic-nematic order by pressure (p) tuning. By measuring specific heat under p up to 2.36GPa, we study the multiple phases in FeSe using a thermodynamic probe. We conclude that superconductivity is bulk across the entire p range and competes with magnetism. Our analysis suggests that superconducting and magnetic fluctuations exist over a wide temperature range above the respective bulk transition temperatures, whenever magnetism is present. These observation…
Interface-enhanced high-temperature superconductivity in one unit-cell (UC) FeSe film on SrTiO3(001) (STO) substrate has recently attracted much attention in condensed matter physics and material science. Here, by ex situ transport measurements, we report on the superconductivity in FeSe ultra-thin films with different thickness on STO substrate. We find that the onset superconducting transition temperature (Tc) decreases with increasing film thickness of FeSe, which is opposite to the behavior usually observed in traditional superconductor films. By systematic post-annealing of 5 UC FeSe film…
We have investigated the effect of atomic substitutions in the FeSe system, which exhibits the simplest crystal structure among the iron-based superconductors. An enhancement of the superconducting transition temperature Tc was observed with the substitution of S or Te for Se; the Tc increased with S substitution by up to 20 %, and also increased with Te substitution up to 75 %. In contrast, Co or Ni substitutions for the Fe site significantly suppressed superconductivity. In this work we present a detailed description of the substitution technique employed to determine Tc in the FeSe system.
The superconducting FeSe films were successfully fabricated using the electrochemical synthesis. The composition ratio of Fe and Se can be controlled by the electric potential and pH value. We found that the FeSe films deposited at the electric potential -1.75 V and pH 2.3 show the superconducting transition at 3.5 K. The establishment of this electrochemical synthesis technique will provide many advantages for application.
The electronic structure of the strained FeSe0.5Te0.5 superconductor has been investigated from first principles. Our calculation results indicate that the influence of hydrostatic, biaxial or uniaxial compressive stress on the density of states at the Fermi level is insignificant. The overall shape of the Fermi-surface (FS) nesting function for FeSe0.5Te0.5 at ambient pressure resembles that of its parent compound, FeSe, but under the ab-plane compressive strain. In these two systems, changes of their FSs under various stress conditions are qualitatively almost the same. However, in FeSe0.5Te…
Monolayer FeSe grown on SrTiO$_3$ provides a new playground for high-Tc superconductivity. A recent study shows the importance of stripy instability for superconductivity enhancement in FeSe/SrTiO3. However, it is still under debate whether such a stripe phase is ubiquitously bound to the interfacial superconductivity. Here, we report on molecular beam epitaxy growth and low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy study of FeSe films on BaTiO$_3$(001). We find that the stripe phase is more prominent in FeSe/BaTiO$_3$. Long-range stripes exist in bilayer and triple-layer FeSe films at 4 K and…
Here we establish a combined electronic phase diagram of isoelectronic FeSe1-xSx (0.19 > x > 0.0) and FeSe1-yTey (0.04 < y < 1.0) single crystals. The FeSe1-yTey crystals with y = 0.04 - 0.30 are grown by a hydrothermal ion-deintercalation (HID) method. Based on combined experiments of the specific heat, electrical transport, and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, no signature of the tetragonal-symmetry-broken transition to orthorhombic (nematic) phase is observed in the HID FeSe1-yTey samples, as compared with the FeSe1-xSx samples showing this transition at Ts. A ubiquitous dip-like …
Temperature (12K $\le$ T $\le$ 300K) dependent extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) studies at the Fe K edge in FeSe$_{1-x}$Te$_x$ (x = 0, 0.5 and 1.0) compounds have been carried out to understand the reasons for increase in T$_C$ upon Te doping in FeSe. While local distortions are present near superconducting onset in FeSe and FeSe$_{0.5}$Te$_{0.5}$, they seem to be absent in non superconducting FeTe. Of crucial importance is the variation of anion height. In FeSe$_{0.5}$Te$_{0.5}$, near superconducting onset, the two heights, $h_{Fe-Se}$ and $h_{Fe-Te}$ show a nearly opposite be…
We present the results of paramagnetic LDA band structure calculations: band dispersions, densities of states and Fermi surfaces, for the new iron based high-temperature superconductor LiOHFeSe. Main structural motif providing bands in the vicinity of the Fermi level is FeSe layer which is isostructural to the bulk FeSe prototype superconductor. The bands crossing the Fermi level and Fermi surfaces of the new compound are typical for other iron based superconductors. Experimentally it was shown that introduction of Fe ions into LiOH layer gives rise to ferromagnetic ordering of the Fe ions at …
The superfluid density, ρ_s, of the iron chalcogenide superconductor, FeSe_1-x, was studied as a function of pressure by means of muon-spin rotation. The zero-temperature value of ρ_s increases with increasing transition temperature T_c (increasing pressure) following the tendency observed for various Fe-based and cuprate superconductors. The analysis of ρ_s(T) within the two-gap scheme reveals that the effect on both, T_c and ρ_s(0), is entirely determined by the band(s) where the large superconducting gap develops, while the band(s) with the small gap become practically unaffected.
The angular-dependent magnetoresistance (AMR) of the ab plane is measured on the single crystals of FeSe1-xSx (x = 0, 0.07, 0.13 and 1) and FeSe1-yTey (y = 0.06, 0.61 and 1) at various temperatures under fields up to 9 T. A pronounced twofold-anisotropic carrier-scattering effect is identified by AMR, and attributed to a magnetic-field-induced spin nematicity that emerges from the tetragonal normal-state regime below a characteristic temperature Tsn. This magnetically polarized spin nematicity is found to be ubiquitous in the isoelectronic FeSe1-xSx and FeSe1-yTey systems, no matter whether th…
Identifying the symmetry of the wave function describing the Cooper pairs is pivotal in understanding the origin of high-temperature superconductivity in iron-based superconductors. Despite nearly a decade of intense investigation, the answer to this question remains elusive. Here we use the muon spin rotation/relaxation (muSR) technique to investigate the underlying symmetry of the pairing state of the FeSe superconductor, the basic building block of all iron-chalcogenide superconductors. Contrary to earlier muSR studies on powders and crystals, we show that while the superconducting gap is m…
We study the momentum-integrated quasiparticle interference (QPI) in the FeSe-based superconductors. This method was recently proposed theoretically and has been applied to determine the pairing symmetry in these materials experimentally. Our findings suggest that, if the incipient bands and the superconducting (SC) pairing on them are taken into consideration, then the experimentally measured bound states and momentum-integrated QPI can be well fitted, even if the SC order parameter does not change sign on the Fermi surfaces. Therefore, we offer an alternative explanation to the experimental …
We propose a simple method of calculating inhomogeneous, atomic-scale phenomena in superconductors which makes use of the wave function information traditionally discarded in the construction of tight-binding models used in the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations. The method uses symmetry based first principles Wannier functions to visualize the effects of superconducting pairing on the distribution of electronic states over atoms within a crystal unit cell. Local symmetries lower than the global lattice symmetry can thus be exhibited as well, rendering theoretical comparisons with scanning tunneli…
The discoveries of iron-based superconductors with relatively high transition temperature are under intense experimental and theoretical investigation. Here we present magnetotransport measurements on FeSe superconductor under hydrostatic pressure. We show that in Fe-deficient tetragonal FeSe binary compound, the onset of superconducting transition is almost doubled under 1.98GPa pressure and the estimated upper critical field of 26.7Tesla is increased to 47.5Tesla.
We have investigated the electronic structures of newly discovered superconductor FeSe1-x by bulk-sensitive photoemission spectroscopy (PES). The large Fe 3d spectral weight is located in the vicinity of the Fermi level (EF) and it decreases steeply toward EF . Compared with results of band structure calculations, narrowing the Fe 3d band width and the energy shift of the band toward EF are found, suggesting a mass enhancement due to the weak electron correlation effect. Meanwhile, Fe 2p core-level PES reveals a strong itinerant character of Fe 3d electrons. These features are very similar to …
Recent superconducting transition temperatures (Tc) over 100 K for monolayer FeSe on SrTiO3 have renewed interest in the bulk parent compound. In KCl:AlCl3 flux-transport-grown crystals of FeSe0.94Be0.06, FeSe0.97Be0.03 and, for comparison, FeSe, this work reports doping of FeSe using Be, among the smallest of possible dopants, corresponding to an effective chemical pressure. According to lattice parameter measurements, 6% Be doping shrank the tetragonal FeSe lattice equivalent to a physical pressure of 0.75 GPa. Using this flux-transport method of sample preparation, 6% of Be was the maximum …
In the recent work by Song et al. [Science 332, 1410 (2011)], the scanning tunneling spectroscopy experiment in the stoichiometric FeSe reveals evidence for nodal superconductivity and strong anisotropy. The nodal structure can be explained with the extended s-wave pairing structure with the mixture of the $s_{x^2+y^2}$ and $s_{x^2y^2}$ pairing symmetries. We calculate the anisotropic vortex structure by using the self-consistent Bogoliubov-de Gennes mean-field theory. In considering the absence of magnetic ordering in the FeSe at the ambient pressure, orbital ordering is introduced, which bre…
We have carried out a detailed study to investigate the existence of an insulating parent phase for FeSe superconductor. The insulating Fe4Se5 with specific Fe-vacancy order shows a 3D-Mott variable range hopping behavior with a Verwey-like electronic correlation at around 45 K. The application of the RTA process at 450 celcius degree results in the destruction of Fe-vacancy order and induces more electron carriers by increasing the Fe3+ valence state. Superconductivity emerges with Tc ~ 8K without changing the chemical stoichiometry of the sample after the RTA process by resulting in the addi…
We study the effect of a single non-magnetic impurity in A$_{y}$Fe$_{2-x}$Se$_{2}$ (A=K, Rb, or Cs) superconductors by considering various pairing states based on a three-orbital model consistent with the photoemission experiments. The local density of states on and near the impurity site has been calculated by solving the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations self-consistently. The impurity-induced in-gap bound states are found only for attractive impurity scattering potential, as in the cases of doping of Co or Ni, which is characterized by the strong particle-hole asymmetry, in the nodeless $d_{x^…
Our valence band photoelectron spectroscopic studies show a temperature dependent spectral weight transfer near the Fermi level in the Fe-based superconductor FeSe1-xTex. Using theoretical band structure calculations we have shown that the weight transfer is due to the temperature induced changes in the Fe(Se,Te)4 tetrahedra. These structural changes lead to shifts in the electron occupancy from the xz/yz and x2-y2 orbitals to the 3z2-r2 orbitals indicating a temperature induced crossover from a metallic state to an Orbital Selective Mott (OSM) Phase. Our study presents the observation of a te…
The influence of uniform pressures $P$ up to 5 kbar on the superconducting transition temperature $T_c$ was studied for the FeSe$_{1-x}$Te$_x$ ($x=0$, 0.85, 0.88 and 0.9) system. For the first time, we observed a change in sign of the pressure effect on $T_c$ when going from FeSe to tellurium rich alloys. This has allowed to specify the pressure derivative d$T_c$/d$P$ for the system as a function of composition. The observed dependence was compared with results of the {\em ab initio} calculations of electronic structure and magnetism of FeSe, FeTe and FeSe$_{0.5}$Te$_{0.5}$, and also with our …
The latest discovery of high temperature superconductivity signature in single-layer FeSe is significant because it is possible to break the superconducting critical temperature ceiling (maximum Tc~55 K) that has been stagnant since the discovery of Fe-based superconductivity in 2008. It also blows the superconductivity community by surprise because such a high Tc is unexpected in FeSe system with the bulk FeSe exhibiting a Tc at only 8 K at ambient pressure which can be enhanced to 38 K under high pressure. The Tc is still unusually high even considering the newly-discovered intercalated FeSe…
The electronic structure of the iron chalcogenide superconductor FeSe_{1-x} was investigated by high- resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). The results were compared to DFT calculations showing some significant differences between the experimental electronic structure of FeSe_{1-x}, DFT calculations and existing data on FeSe_{x}Te_{1-x}. The bands undergo a pronounced orbital dependent renormalization, different from what was observed for FeSe_{x}Te_{1-x} and any other pnictides.
FeSe with the PbO structure is a key member of the family of new high-$T_c$ iron pnictide and chalcogenide superconductors, as while it possesses the basic layered structural motif of edge-sharing distorted FeSe$_4$ tetrahedra, it lacks interleaved ion spacers or charge-reservoir layers. We find that application of hydrostatic pressure first rapidly increases $T_c$ which attains a broad maximum of 37 K at $\sim$7 GPa (this is one of the highest $T_c$ ever reported for a binary solid) before decreasing to 6 K upon further compression to $\sim$14 GPa. Complementary synchrotron X-ray diffraction …
We investigated the pressure effects on the FeSe superconductor and the related compounds. Pressure dependence of superconducting transition temperature (Tc) for FeSe0.8S0.2 exhibits a dome-shaped behavior below 0.76 GPa. On the other hand, the Tc of FeSe0.25Te0.75 linearly increases up to 0.99 GPa. Here we discuss the relation between the physical pressure effects and the chemical pressure effects on the FeSe system.
We review a variety of theoretical and experimental results concerning electronic band structure of superconducting materials based on FeSe monolayers. Three type of systems are analyzed: intercalated FeSe systems A_xFe_2Se_{2-x}S_x and [Li_{1-x}Fe_xOH]FeSe as well as the single FeSe layer films on SrTiO_3 substrate. We present the results of detailed first principle electronic band structure calculations for these systems together with comparison with some experimental ARPES data. The electronic structure of these systems is rather different from that of typical FeAs superconductors, which is…
We report on a detailed investigation of the electronic phase diagram of FeSe_1-x under pressures up to 1.4GPa by means of AC magnetization and muon-spin rotation. At a pressure \simeq0.8GPa the non-magnetic and superconducting FeSe_1-x enters a region where long range static magnetic order is realized above T_c and bulk superconductivity coexists and competes on short length scales with the magnetic order below T_c. For even higher pressures an enhancement of both the magnetic and the superconducting transition temperatures as well as of the corresponding order parameters is observed. These e…
Single crystal synchrotron X-ray diffraction as a function of temperature and pressure has revealed a complex biphase mixture in superconducting FeSe. Based on our experimental results we construct a phase diagram where structural behavior and superconducting properties of FeSe are found to be correlated. We show that below 6 GPa, where pressure promotes the superconducting critical temperature, the FeSe structure is composed of 2D layers of edge-shared FeSe4 tetrahedra, while above 6 GPa the superconductivity is strongly suppressed on formation of a new orthorhombic polymorph characterized by…
We investigated chemical pressure effects in electron-doped (e-doped) FeSe by fabricating an electric-double-layer structure with single crystalline FeSe films on LaAlO$_3$ with Se substituted by isovalent Te and S. Our method enables transport measurements of e-doped FeSe. Electron doping by applying gate voltage of 5 V increases $T_{\mathrm c}$ of the FeSe$_{1-x}$Te$_x$ and FeSe$_{1-y}$S$_y$ films with $0 \leq x \leq 0.4$ and $0 \leq y \leq 0.25$, while the e-doped $x=0.5$ film showed lower $T_{\mathrm c}$ than that of the undoped one. Both positive and chemical pressure suppress $T_{\mathrm…
57Fe-Mossbauer spectra of superconducting beta-FeSe, the Li/NH3 intercalate product and a subsequent sample of this intercalate treated with moist He gas have been measured in temperature range 4.7 - 290 K. A correlation is established between hyperfine parameters and critical temperature Tc in these phases. A strong increase of isomer shift upon intercalation is explained by a charge transfer from the Li/NH3 intercalate to the FeSe layers resulting in an increase of Tc up to 42 K. A significant decrease of the quadrupole splitting above 240 K has been attributed to diffusive motion of Li+ ion…
We have studied the structural and superconducting properties of tetragonal FeSe under pressures up to 26GPa using synchrotron radiation and diamond anvil cells. The bulk modulus of the tetragonal phase is 28.5(3)GPa, much smaller than the rest of Fe based superconductors. At 12GPa we observe a phase transition from the tetragonal to an orthorhombic symmetry. The high pressure orthorhombic phase has a higher Tc reaching 34K at 22GPa.
We study the angular dependence of the dissipation in the superconducting state of FeSe and Fe(Se$_\text{1-x}$Te$_\text{x}$) through electrical transport measurements, using crystalline intergrown materials. We reveal the key role of the inclusions of the non superconducting magnetic phase Fe$_\text{1-y}$(Se$_\text{1-x}$Te$_\text{x}$), growing into the Fe(Se$_\text{1-x}$Te$_\text{x}$) pure $β$-phase, in the development of a correlated defect structure. The matching of both atomic structures defines the growth habit of the crystalline material as well as the correlated planar defects orientatio…
We have computed the correlated electronic structure of FeSe and its dependence on the A1g mode versus compression. Using the self-consistent density functional theory - dynamical mean field theory (DFT-DMFT) with continuous time quantum Monte Carlo (CTQMC), we find that there is greatly enhanced coupling between some correlated electron states and the A1g lattice distortion. Superconductivity in FeSe shows a very strong sensitivity to pressure, with an increase in Tc of almost a factor of 5 within a few GPa, followed by a drop, despite monotonic pressure dependence of almost all electronic pr…
We report on the structural phase transitions in the S doped FeSe superconductor by powder synchrotron X ray diffraction at high pressures up to 18.5 GPa under compression and decompression modes. In order to create high quasi hydrostatic pressures, diamond anvil cells filled with helium as a pressure transmitting medium were used. It was found that at ambient pressure and room temperature, S doped FeSe has a tetragonal structure. Under compression, in the region of 10 GPa, a phase transition from the tetragonal into the orthorhombic structure is observed, which persists up to 18.5 GPa. Our re…
We report the phase diagram for the superconducting system (${^{7}}$Li${_{1-x}}$Fe${_{x}}$OD)FeSe and contrast it with that of (Li${_{1-x}}$Fe${_{x}}$OH)FeSe both in single crystal and powder forms. Samples were prepared via hydrothermal methods and characterized with laboratory and synchrotron X-ray diffraction, high-resolution neutron powder diffraction (NPD), and high intensity NPD. We find a correlation between the tetragonality of the unit cell parameters and the critical temperature, $T_{c}$, which is indicative of the effects of charge doping on the lattice and formation of iron vacanci…
We investigate the relation of the critical current density (Jc) and the remarkably increased superconducting transition temperature (Tc) for the FeSe single crystals under pressures up to 2.43 GPa, where the Tc is increased by ~8 K/GPa. The critical current density corresponding to the free flux flow is monotonically enhanced by pressure which is due to the increase in Tc, whereas the depinning critical current density at which the vortex starts to move is more influenced by the pressure-induced magnetic state compared to the increase of Tc. Unlike other high-Tc superconductors, FeSe is not m…
In contrast to its bulk crystals, the FeSe film or layer exhibits better superconductivity performance, which attract much interest in its fundamental research as well as potential application. In present work, transition from insulator to superconductor and significant enhancement of superconductivity were achieved in the high quality (00l) oriented FeSe films via controlling the thickness as well as the Fe/Se ratio. The highest Tc up to 15.2 K (almost 2 times higher than those of bulk crystals) and Hc2 up to 35.5 T are obtained in our atmosphere-stable FeSe thin film with practical thickness…
We report X-band EPR and $^{125}$Te and $^{77}$Se NMR measurements on single-crystalline superconducting FeSe$_{0.42}$Te$_{0.58}$ ($T_c$ = 11.5(1) K). The data provide evidence for the coexistence of intrinsic localized and itinerant electronic states. In the normal state, localized moments couple to itinerant electrons in the Fe(Se,Te) layers and affect the local spin susceptibility and spin fluctuations. Below $T_c$, spin fluctuations become rapidly suppressed and an unconventional superconducting state emerges in which $1/T_1$ is reduced at a much faster rate than expected for conventional …
New FeSe-based intercalation superconductors, $A_x$(C$_8$H$_{11}$N)$_y$Fe$_{1-z}$Se ($A$ = Li, Na), with $T_\mathrm{c}$ = 39-44 K have been successfully synthesized via the intercalation of alkali metals and 2-phenethylamine into FeSe. The interlayer spacings, namely, the distances between neighboring Fe layers, $d$, of $A_x$(C$_8$H$_{11}$N)$_y$Fe$_{1-z}$Se ($A$ = Li, Na) are 19.04(6) and 18.0(1) Å, respectively. These $d$ values are the largest among those of the FeSe-based intercalation compounds and are understood to be due to the intercalation of two molecules of 2-phenethylamine in series…
Polycrystalline samples of FeSe$_{0.5}$Te$_{0.5}$ were synthesized using a conventional solid-state reaction method. The onset of bulk superconductivity transition was confirmed by SQUID magnetometry at 12.5~K. $^{57}$Fe Mössbauer spectra in transmission geometry were recorded at temperatures between 6.0 and 320 K. Both the isomer shift and the total absorption started to drop about $T_c$, indicating a softening of the lattice. The drop is estimated to correspond to at least 60~K from the original Debye temperature $θ_{\rm D}\approx 460$~K. Seebeck measurements indicate that the samples are $n…
Unlike the parent phases of the iron-arsenide high Tc superconductors, undoped FeSe is not magnetically ordered and exhibits superconductivity with Tc~9K. Equally surprising is the fact that applied pressure dramatically enhances the modest Tc to ~37K. We investigate the electronic properties of FeSe using 77Se NMR to search for the key to the superconducting mechanism. We demonstrate that the electronic properties of FeSe are very similar to those of electron-doped FeAs superconductors, and that antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations are strongly enhanced near Tc. Furthermore, applied pressure e…
The coupling between superconductivity and othorhombic distortion is studied in vapor-grown FeSe single crystals using high-resolution thermal-expansion measurements. In contrast to the Ba122-based (Ba122) superconductors, we find that superconductivity does not reduce the orthorhombicity below Tc. Instead we find that superconductivity couples strongly to the in-plane area, which explains the large hydrostatic pressure effects. We discuss our results in light of the spinnematic scenario and argue that FeSe has many features quite different from the typical Fe-based superconductors.
The 12%-S doped FeSe system has a high Tc of 30 K at a pressure of 3.0 GPa. We have successfully investigated its microscopic properties for the first time via $^{77}$Se-NMR measurements under pressure. The antiferromagnetic (AFM) fluctuations at the optimal pressure (~3 GPa) exhibited unexpected suppression compared with the AFM fluctuations at ambient pressure, even though the optimal pressure is close to the phase boundary of the AFM phase induced at the high-pressure region. In addition, we revealed that the SC phase at an applied field of 6.02 T exhibited a remarkable double-dome structur…
Anomalously large fluctuation diamagnetism around the superconducting critical temperature has been recently observed on iron selenide (FeSe) [S. Kasahara et al., unpublished]. This indicates that superconducting fluctuations (SCFs) play a more significant role in FeSe, which supposedly has two-band structure, than in the familiar single-band superconductors. Motivated by the data in FeSe, SCF-induced diamagnetism is examined in a two-band system, on the basis of a phenomenological approach with a Ginzburg-Landau functional. The obtained results indicate that the SCF-induced diamagnetism may b…
This is a "perspective" inspired by the forthcoming article, "What makes the $T_c$ of monolayer FeSe on SrTiO so high: a sign-problem free quantum Monte Carlo study," by Z-X. Li, F. Wang, H. Yao, and D-H. Lee, arXiv:1512.06179.
We use inelastic neutron scattering to study the effect of an in-plane magnetic field on the magnetic resonance in optimally doped superconductors FeSe$_{0.4}$Te$_{0.6}$ ($T_c=14$ K) and BaFe$_{1.9}$Ni$_{0.1}$As$_{2}$ ($T_c=20$ K). While the magnetic field up to 14.5 Tesla does not change the energy of the resonance, it particially suppresses $T_c$ and the corresponding superconductivity-induced intensity gain of the mode. However, we find no direct evidence for the field-induced spin-1 Zeeman splitting of the resonance. Therefore, it is still unclear if the resonance is the long-sought single…
Motivated by the high superconducting transition temperature of monolayer FeSe on SrTiO3, we propose a potential three-dimensional high-temperature superconductor superlattice FeSe-SrTiO3 and study its structural stability and electronic structure using density functional theory. We find that the binding energy between the FeSe and SrTiO3 layers is about 0.7 eV per (Fe2Se2) unit and that it saturates already within a single TiO2 atomic layer of SrTiO3. In addition we analyzed the dynamical stability of the superlattice and compared it to the case of bulk SrTiO3.
To elucidate the magnetic structure and the origin of the nematicity in FeSe, we perform a high-pressure $^{77}$Se NMR study on FeSe single crystals. We find a suppression of the structural transition temperature with pressure up to about 2 GPa from the anisotropy of the Knight shift. Above 2 GPa, a stripe-order antiferromagnetism that breaks the spatial four-fold rotational symmetry is determined by the NMR spectra under different field orientations and with temperatures down to 50 mK. The magnetic phase transition is revealed to be first-order type, implying the existence of a concomitant st…
Recently it has been suggested that the role of electron-phonon coupling in the mechanism of iron-based superconductors may have been underestimated and that the antiferromagnetism and the induced xy potential may even have a dramatic amplification effect on electron-phonon coupling. To substantiate the recently announced xy potential in the literature, we create a two-channel model to separately superimpose the dynamics of the electron in the upper and lower tetrahedral plane. The results of our two-channel model support the literature data. While the scientists are still searching for a univ…
We investigate the pressure dependence of the upper critical fields (μ$_0$$H$$_{c2}$) for FeSe single crystals with pressure up to 2.57 GPa. The superconducting (SC) properties show a disparate behavior across a critical pressure where the pressure-induced antiferromagnetic phase coexists with superconductivity. The magnetoresistance for $H//ab$ and $H//c$ is very different: for $H//c$, magnetic field induces and enhances a hump in the resistivity close to the $T_c$ for pressures higher than 1.2 GPa, while it is absent for $H//ab$. Since the measured μ$_0$$H$$_{c2}$ for FeSe samples is smaller…
The field and temperature dependencies of the longitudinal and Hall resistivity have been studied for high-quality FeSe${}_{1-x}$S${}_{x}$ (x up to 0.14) single crystals. Quasiclassical analysis of the obtained data indicates a strong variation of the electron and hole concentrations under the studied isovalent substitution and proximity of FeSe to the point of the majority carrier-type inversion. On this basis, we propose a `doped semimetal' scheme for the superconducting phase diagram of the FeSe family, which can be applied to other iron-based superconductors. In this scheme, the two local …
The iron-based superconductors are characterized by multiple-orbital physics where all the five Fe 3$d$ orbitals get involved. The multiple-orbital nature gives rise to various novel phenomena like orbital-selective Mott transition, nematicity and orbital fluctuation that provide a new route for realizing superconductivity. The complexity of multiple-orbital also asks to disentangle the relationship between orbital, spin and nematicity, and to identify dominant orbital ingredients that dictate superconductivity. The bulk FeSe superconductor provides an ideal platform to address these issues be…
