We review a variety of theoretical and experimental results concerning electronic band structure of superconducting materials based on FeSe monolayers. Three type of systems are analyzed: intercalated FeSe systems A_xFe_2Se_{2-x}S_x and [Li_{1-x}Fe_xOH]FeSe as well as the single FeSe layer films on SrTiO_3 substrate. We present the results of detailed first principle electronic band structure calculations for these systems together with comparison with some experimental ARPES data. The electronic structure of these systems is rather different from that of typical FeAs superconductors, which is quite significant for possible microscopic mechanism of superconductivity. This is reflected in the absence of hole pockets of the Fermi surface at Γ-point in Brillouin zone, so that there are no "nesting" properties of different Fermi surface pockets. LDA+DMFT calculations show that correlation effects on Fe-3d states in the single FeSe layer are not that strong as in most of FeAs systems. As a result, at present there is no theoretical understanding of the formation of rather "shallow" electronic bands at M points. LDA calculations show that the main difference in electronic structure of FeSe monolayer on SrTiO_3 substrate from isolated FeSe layer is the presence of the band of O-2p surface states of TiO_2 layer on the Fermi level together with Fe-3d states, which may be important for understanding the enhanced T_c values in this system. We briefly discuss the implications of our results for microscopic models of superconductivity.
Monolayer films of FeSe grown on SrTiO$_3$ substrates exhibit significantly higher superconducting transition temperatures than those of bulk FeSe. Interaction of electrons in the FeSe layer with dipolar SrTiO$_3$ phonons has been suggested as the cause of the enhanced transition temperature. In this paper we systematically study the coupling of SrTiO$_3$ longitudinal optical phonons to the FeSe electron, including also electron-electron Coulomb interactions at the random phase approximation level. We find that the electron-phonon interaction between FeSe and SrTiO$_3$ substrate is almost enti…
The enhanced superconductivity in monolayer FeSe on titanates opens a fascinating pathway towards the rational design of high-temperature superconductors. Utilizing the state-of-the-art oxide plus chalcogenide molecular beam epitaxy systems in situ connected to a synchrotron angle-resolved photoemission spectroscope, epitaxial LaTiO3 layers with varied atomic thicknesses are inserted between monolayer FeSe and SrTiO3, for systematic modulation of interfacial chemical potential. With the dramatic increase of electron accumulation at the LaTiO3-SrTiO3 surface, providing a substantial surge of wor…
Iron selenide (FeSe) is an iron-based superconductor which shows unique properties, including strongly anisotropic superconducting gap, paramagnetism in undoped compound and extremely small Fermi pocket size. In this work, we demonstrate that the sizes of electron and hole pockets in FeSe monolayer become much smaller than those in bulk. The Fermi energy is in the order of a few meV and can be fine-tuned by the thickness of graphene layers underneath. Despite the low carrier density, the FeSe monolayers grown on trilayer or multi-layer graphene are superconducting. The superconducting gap size…
Based on recent high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurement in monolayer FeSe grown on SrTiO$_{3}$, we constructed a tight-binding model and proposed a superconducting (SC) pairing function which can well fit the observed band structure and SC gap anisotropy. Then we investigated the spin excitation spectra in order to determine the possible sign structure of the SC order parameter. We found that a resonance-like spin excitation may occur if the SC order parameter changes sign along the Fermi surfaces. However, this resonance is located at different locations in momen…
To elucidate the mechanisms behind the enhanced $T_c$ in monolayer (1ML) FeSe on SrTiO$_3$ (STO), we grew highly strained 1ML FeSe on the rectangular (100) face of rutile TiO$_2$, and observed the coexistence of replica bands and superconductivity with a $T_c$ of 63 K. From the similar $T_c$ between this system and 1ML FeSe on STO (001), we conclude that strain and dielectric constant are likely unimportant to the enhanced $T_c$ in these systems. A systematic comparison of 1ML FeSe on TiO$_2$ with other systems in the FeSe family shows that while charge transfer alone can enhance $T_c$, it is …
Combining the recent scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) measurements, we construct a tight-binding model suitable for describing the band structure of monolayer FeSe grown on SrTiO$_{3}$. Then we propose a possible pairing function, which can well describe the gap anisotropy observed by ARPES and has a hidden sign-changing characteristic. At last, as a test of this pairing function we further study the nonmagnetic impurity-induced bound states, to be verified by future STM experiments.
Monolayer films of FeSe grown on SrTiO$_3$ substrates are electron doped relative to bulk and exhibit a significantly higher superconducting transition temperatures. We present density functional calculations and a modified Schottky model incorporating the strong paraelectricity of SrTiO$_3$ which demonstrate that the doping may be due to charge transfer from SrTiO$_3$ impurity bands driven by work function mismatch. Physically relevant levels of Nb doping are shown to lead to doping of the FeSe compatible with observation. The coupling of electrons in FeSe to polar phonons in the depletion re…
The discovery of higher-temperature superconductivity in FeSe monolayers on SrTiO$_3$ (STO) substrates has sparked a surge of interest in the interface superconductivity. One point of the agreement reached to date is that modulation doping by impurities in the substrate is critical for the enhanced superconductivity. Remarkably, the universal doping of about 0.1 electrons per Fe, \textit{i.e.}, so-called ``magic'' doping, has been observed on a range of Ti oxide substrates, which concludes that there likely is some important interaction limiting the FeSe doping. Our study discovers that the po…
Determination of the pairing symmetry in monolayer FeSe films on SrTiO3 is a requisite for understanding the high superconducting transition temperature in this system, which has attracted intense theoretical and experimental studies but remains controversial. Here, by introducing several types of point defects in FeSe monolayer films, we conduct a systematic investigation on the impurity-induced electronic states by spatially resolved scanning tunneling spectroscopy. Ranging from surface adsorption, chemical substitution to intrinsic structural modification, these defects generate a variety o…
Synthesis of monolayer FeSe on SrTiO3, with greatly enhanced superconductivity compared to bulk FeSe, remains difficult. Lengthy annealing within a certain temperature window is always required to achieve superconducting samples as reported by different groups around the world, but the mechanism of annealing in inducing superconductivity has not been elucidated. We grow FeSe films on SrTiO3 by molecular beam epitaxy and adjust the stoichiometry by depositing additional small amounts of Fe atoms. The monolayer films become superconducting after the Fe deposition without any annealing, and show …
Recent observation of $\sim$ 10 times higher critical temperature in FeSe monolayer compared with its bulk phase has drawn a great deal of attention because the electronic structure in the monolayer phase appears to be different than bulk FeSe. Using a combination of density functional theory and dynamical mean field theory, we find electronic correlations have important effects on the predicted atomic-scale geometry and the electronic structure of the monolayer FeSe on SrTiO$_3$. The electronic correlations are dominantly controlled by the Se-Fe-Se angle either in the bulk phase or the monola…
We investigate the electronic and magnetic properties of FeSe monolayer on the anisotropic SrTiO$_3$ (110) surface. With compressive strain along $[1\bar{1}0]$ direction from the substrate, the monolayer FeSe possesses a staggered bipartite iron lattice with an height difference around 0.06Å~ along the out-plane direction. The staggering causes stronger magnetic frustration between the collinear and checkerboard antiferromagnetic orders, and the strain elongates one electron and two hole pockets along the strain direction and the remaining hole pocket along the orthogonal direction. The strain…
It was observed recently (K. Shigekawa et al, PNAS 116, 2470 (2019)) that while monolayer iron chalcigenide FeSe on SrTiO3 (STO) substrate has a very high critical temperature, its chemical and structural "twin" material FeS=STO has a very low Tc if any. To explain this the substrate interfacial phonon model of superconductivity in iron chalcogenides is further developed. The main glue is the oxygen ion (60mev) vibrations longitudinal optical (LO) mode. The mode propagates mainly in the TiO2 layer adjacent to the monolayer (and genrally present also in similar highly polarized ionic crystals l…

We investigate superconductivity in a two-band system with an electron- and hole-like band, where one of the bands is away from the Fermi level (or incipient). We argue that the incipient band contributes significantly to spin-fluctuation pairing in the strong coupling limit where the system is close to a magnetic instability, and can lead to a large Tc. In this case, Tc is limited by a competition between the frequency range of the coupling (set by an isolated paramagnon) and the coupling strength itself, such that a dome-like Tc dependence on the incipient band position is obtained. The coup…
We investigate the effects of electron-phonon coupling, as well as of spin and charge fluctuations on the superconducting state in a single layer of FeSe on SrTiO$_3$ substrate. These three bosonic mediators of Cooper pairing are treated on equal footing in a multichannel, full-bandwidth, multiband, and anisotropic Eliashberg theory of the interacting state. Our self-consistent calculations show that an s-wave symmetry of the superconducting gap is compatible only with a complete absence of spin fluctuations. When spin fluctuations are present, the sign-changing nodeless d-wave pairing symmetr…
The successful fabrication of one monolayer FeSe on SrTiO$_{3}$ represented a real breakthrough in searching for high-T$_{c}$ Fe-based superconductors (Ref. 1). Motivated by this important discovery, we studied the effects of tensile strain on one monolayer and bulk iron-chalcogenide superconductors (FeSe and FeTe), showing that it produces important magnetic and electronic changes in the systems. We found that the magnetic ground state of bulk and monolayer FeSe is the block-checkerboard phase, which turns into the collinear stripe phase under in plane tensile strain. FeTe, in both bulk and m…
We present a novel method for embedding spin and charge fluctuations in an anisotropic, multi-band and full-bandwidth Eliashberg treatment of superconductivity. Our analytical framework, based on the random phase approximation, allows for a selfconsistent calculation of material specific characteristics in the interacting, and more specifically, the superconducting state. We apply this approach to bulk FeSe as representative for the iron-based superconductors and successfully solve for the superconducting transition temperature $T_c$, the gap symmetry and the gap magnitude. We obtain $T_c \app…
Monolayer FeSe exhibits the highest transition temperature among the iron based superconductors and appears to be fully gapped, seemingly consistent with $s$-wave superconductivity. Here, we develop a theory for the superconductivity based on coupling to fluctuations of checkerboard magnetic order (which has the same translation symmetry as the lattice). The electronic states are described by a symmetry based ${\bf k}\cdot {\bf p}$-like theory and naturally account for the states observed by angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy. We show that a prediction of this theory is that the resulta…
We show that electron-phonon coupling can induce strong electron pairing in an FeSe monolayer on a SrTiO3 substrate (experimental indications for superconducting Tc are between 65 and 109K). The role of the SrTiO3 substrate in increasing the coupling is two-fold. First, the interaction of the FeSe and TiO2 terminated face of SrTiO3 prevents the FeSe monolayer from undergoing a shear-type (orthorhombic, nematic) structural phase transition. Second, the substrate allows an anti-ferromagnetic ground state of FeSe which opens electron-phonon coupling channels within the monolayer that are prevente…
The monolayer FeSe with a thickness of one unit cell grown on a single-crystal SrTiO$_{3}$ substrate (FeSe/STO) exhibits striking high-temperature superconductivity with transition temperature $T_{c}$ over 65K reported by recent experimental measurements. In this work, through analyzing the distinctive electronic structure, and providing systematic classification of the pairing symmetry , we find that both $s$-and $p$-wave pairing with odd parity give rise to topological superconducting states in monolayer FeSe, and the exotic properties of $s$-wave topological superconducting states have clos…
This review discusses the main experiments and theoretical views related to observation of high-temperature superconductivity in intercalated FeSe compounds and single layer films of FeSe on substrates like SrTiO_3. We consider in detail the electronic structure of these systems, both theoretical calculations of this structure at hand and their correspondence with ARPES experiments. It is stressed that electronic spectrum of these systems is qualitatively different from typical picture of the spectrum in well studied FeAs superconductors and the related problems of theoretical description of s…
Motivated by the high superconducting transition temperature of monolayer FeSe on SrTiO3, we propose a potential three-dimensional high-temperature superconductor superlattice FeSe-SrTiO3 and study its structural stability and electronic structure using density functional theory. We find that the binding energy between the FeSe and SrTiO3 layers is about 0.7 eV per (Fe2Se2) unit and that it saturates already within a single TiO2 atomic layer of SrTiO3. In addition we analyzed the dynamical stability of the superlattice and compared it to the case of bulk SrTiO3.
The iron-based superconductor FeSe offers a unique possibility to study the interplay of superconductivity with purely nematic as well magnetic-nematic order by pressure (p) tuning. By measuring specific heat under p up to 2.36GPa, we study the multiple phases in FeSe using a thermodynamic probe. We conclude that superconductivity is bulk across the entire p range and competes with magnetism. Our analysis suggests that superconducting and magnetic fluctuations exist over a wide temperature range above the respective bulk transition temperatures, whenever magnetism is present. These observation…
We show that the superconducting transition temperature Tc of FeSe1-xTex can be computed to reasonable values in a modified McMillan approach in which the electron-phonon coupling is amplified by the antiferromagnetism and the out-of-plane phonons triggered by the tetrahedral lattice sites. This interplay is not only effective at ambient pressure, but also under hydrostatic compression. According to our model, the theoretical Tc of the compressed FeSe0.5Te0.5 agrees with experiment results. More importantly, by taking into account the interfacial effect between an FeSe monolayer and its SrTiO3…
Interface-enhanced high-temperature superconductivity in one unit-cell (UC) FeSe film on SrTiO3(001) (STO) substrate has recently attracted much attention in condensed matter physics and material science. Here, by ex situ transport measurements, we report on the superconductivity in FeSe ultra-thin films with different thickness on STO substrate. We find that the onset superconducting transition temperature (Tc) decreases with increasing film thickness of FeSe, which is opposite to the behavior usually observed in traditional superconductor films. By systematic post-annealing of 5 UC FeSe film…
The origin of enhanced superconductivity over 50 K in the recently discovered FeSe monolayer films grown on SrTiO$_{3}$ (STO), as compared to 8 K in bulk FeSe, is intensely debated. As with the ferrochalcogenides A$_{x}$Fe$_{2-y}$Se$_{2}$ and potassium doped FeSe, which also have a relatively high superconducting critical temperature ($T_c$), the Fermi surface (FS) of the FeSe/STO monolayer films is free of hole-like FS, suggesting that a Lifshitz transition by which these hole FSs vanish may help increasing $T_c$. However, the fundamental reasons explaining this increase of $T_c$ remain uncle…
Monolayer FeSe grown on SrTiO$_3$ provides a new playground for high-Tc superconductivity. A recent study shows the importance of stripy instability for superconductivity enhancement in FeSe/SrTiO3. However, it is still under debate whether such a stripe phase is ubiquitously bound to the interfacial superconductivity. Here, we report on molecular beam epitaxy growth and low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy study of FeSe films on BaTiO$_3$(001). We find that the stripe phase is more prominent in FeSe/BaTiO$_3$. Long-range stripes exist in bilayer and triple-layer FeSe films at 4 K and…
Here we establish a combined electronic phase diagram of isoelectronic FeSe1-xSx (0.19 > x > 0.0) and FeSe1-yTey (0.04 < y < 1.0) single crystals. The FeSe1-yTey crystals with y = 0.04 - 0.30 are grown by a hydrothermal ion-deintercalation (HID) method. Based on combined experiments of the specific heat, electrical transport, and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, no signature of the tetragonal-symmetry-broken transition to orthorhombic (nematic) phase is observed in the HID FeSe1-yTey samples, as compared with the FeSe1-xSx samples showing this transition at Ts. A ubiquitous dip-like …
We present our investigations on the superconducting properties of monolayers of FeSe$_{0.5}$Te$_{0.5}$ grown on the 3D topological insulator Bi$_{2}$Se$_{1.2}$Te$_{1.8}$ using low temperature scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS). While the morphology and the overall transition temperature resemble those of similarly doped bulk crystals, the spatially resolved spectroscopic data at 1.1K shows a much larger spatial inhomogeneity in the superconducting energy gaps. Despite the gap inhomogeneity all the spectra can be fitted with a two-fold anisotropic s-wave gap function. The two-fold nature of…
The discovery of high-temperature (Tc) superconductivity in monolayer FeSe on SrTiO3 raised a fundamental question whether high Tc is commonly realized in monolayer iron-based superconductors. Tetragonal FeS is a key material to resolve this issue because bulk FeS is a superconductor with Tc comparable to that of isostructural FeSe. However, difficulty in synthesizing tetragonal monolayer FeS due to its metastable nature has hindered further investigations. Here we report elucidation of band structure of monolayer FeS on SrTiO3, enabled by a unique combination of in-situ topotactic reaction an…
Monolayer FeSe films grown on SrTiO3 (STO) substrate show superconducting gap-opening temperatures (Tc) which are almost an order of magnitude higher than those of the bulk FeSe and are highest among all known Fe-based superconductors. Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) observed "replica bands" suggesting the importance of the interaction between FeSe electrons and STO phonons. These facts rejuvenated the quest for Tc enhancement mechanisms in iron-based, especially iron-chalcogenide, superconductors. Here, we perform the first numerically-exact sign-problem-free quantum Monte C…
Temperature (12K $\le$ T $\le$ 300K) dependent extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) studies at the Fe K edge in FeSe$_{1-x}$Te$_x$ (x = 0, 0.5 and 1.0) compounds have been carried out to understand the reasons for increase in T$_C$ upon Te doping in FeSe. While local distortions are present near superconducting onset in FeSe and FeSe$_{0.5}$Te$_{0.5}$, they seem to be absent in non superconducting FeTe. Of crucial importance is the variation of anion height. In FeSe$_{0.5}$Te$_{0.5}$, near superconducting onset, the two heights, $h_{Fe-Se}$ and $h_{Fe-Te}$ show a nearly opposite be…
We present the results of paramagnetic LDA band structure calculations: band dispersions, densities of states and Fermi surfaces, for the new iron based high-temperature superconductor LiOHFeSe. Main structural motif providing bands in the vicinity of the Fermi level is FeSe layer which is isostructural to the bulk FeSe prototype superconductor. The bands crossing the Fermi level and Fermi surfaces of the new compound are typical for other iron based superconductors. Experimentally it was shown that introduction of Fe ions into LiOH layer gives rise to ferromagnetic ordering of the Fe ions at …
Solvothermal intercalation of ethylenediamine molecules into FeSe separates the layers by 1078 pm and creates a different stacking. FeSe(en)0.3 is not superconducting although each layer exhibits the stripe-type crystal structure and the Fermi surface topology of superconducting FeSe. FeSe(en)0.3 requires electron-doping for high-Tc similar to monolayers of FeSe@SrTiO3, whose much higher Tc may arise from the proximity of the oxide surface.
We study the temperature evolution of the quasiparticle bands of the FeSe monolayer on the SrTiO$_3$ (STO) substrate from 10 to 300 K by applying the anisotropic, multiband and full-bandwidth Eliashberg theory. To achieve this, we extend this theory by self-consistently coupling the chemical potential to the full set of Eliashberg equations. In this way, the electron filling can accurately be kept at a constant level at any temperature. Solving the coupled equations self-consistently, and with focus on the interfacial electron-phonon coupling, we compute a nearly constant Fermi surface with re…
Superconductivity is significantly enhanced in monolayer FeSe grown on SrTiO3, but not for multilayer films, in which large strength of nematicity develops. However, the link between the high-transition temperature superconductivity in monolayer and the correlation related nematicity in multilayer FeSe films is not well understood. Here, we use low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy to study few-layer FeSe thin films grown by molecular beam epitaxy. We observe an incommensurate long-range smectic phase, which solely appears in bilayer FeSe films. The smectic order still locally exists a…
Identifying the symmetry of the wave function describing the Cooper pairs is pivotal in understanding the origin of high-temperature superconductivity in iron-based superconductors. Despite nearly a decade of intense investigation, the answer to this question remains elusive. Here we use the muon spin rotation/relaxation (muSR) technique to investigate the underlying symmetry of the pairing state of the FeSe superconductor, the basic building block of all iron-chalcogenide superconductors. Contrary to earlier muSR studies on powders and crystals, we show that while the superconducting gap is m…
We study the momentum-integrated quasiparticle interference (QPI) in the FeSe-based superconductors. This method was recently proposed theoretically and has been applied to determine the pairing symmetry in these materials experimentally. Our findings suggest that, if the incipient bands and the superconducting (SC) pairing on them are taken into consideration, then the experimentally measured bound states and momentum-integrated QPI can be well fitted, even if the SC order parameter does not change sign on the Fermi surfaces. Therefore, we offer an alternative explanation to the experimental …
We propose a simple method of calculating inhomogeneous, atomic-scale phenomena in superconductors which makes use of the wave function information traditionally discarded in the construction of tight-binding models used in the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations. The method uses symmetry based first principles Wannier functions to visualize the effects of superconducting pairing on the distribution of electronic states over atoms within a crystal unit cell. Local symmetries lower than the global lattice symmetry can thus be exhibited as well, rendering theoretical comparisons with scanning tunneli…
The pairing mechanism in different classes of correlated materials, including iron based superconductors, is still under debate. For FeSe monolayers, uniform nematic fluctuations have been shown in a lattice Monte Carlo study to play a potentially important role. Here, using dynamical mean field theory calculations for the same model system, we obtain a similar phase diagram and provide an alternative interpretation of the superconductivity in terms of local orbital fluctuations and phase rigidity. Our study clarifies the relation between the superconducting order parameter, superfluid stiffne…
