The superconducting FeSe films were successfully fabricated using the electrochemical synthesis. The composition ratio of Fe and Se can be controlled by the electric potential and pH value. We found that the FeSe films deposited at the electric potential -1.75 V and pH 2.3 show the superconducting transition at 3.5 K. The establishment of this electrochemical synthesis technique will provide many advantages for application.
High-quality crystalline FeSe is successfully synthesized in 5 minutes by an electrochemical deposition technique via increasing the solution temperature. The synthesis of FeSe have been controlled by the applied voltage, synthesis time and pH value. The obtained samples were summarized as a phase diagram at each temperature and applied voltage. The best synthesis temperature to produce high-quality crystalline samples was found to be 70°C.
FeSe film is successfully fabricated onto Rolling Assisted Biaxially Textured Substrate (RABiTS) tapes by an electrochemical deposition technique. The deposited FeSe films tend to become high crystallinity with a decrease in the applied voltage to -1.0 V, and the compositional ratio of Fe to Se approaches 1:1. The sample deposited at -1.0 V shows a superconducting transition approximately 8.0 K in the magnetic susceptibility.
Among the recently discovered iron-based superconductors, ultrathin films of FeSe grown on SrTiO3 substrates have uniquely evolved into a high superconducting-transition-temperature (TC) material. The mechanisms for the high-TC superconductivity are ongoing debate mainly with the superconducting gap characterized with in-situ analysis for FeSe films grown by bottom-up molecular-beam epitaxy. Here, we demonstrate the alternative access to investigate the high-TC superconductivity in ultrathin FeSe with top-down electrochemical etching technique in three-terminal transistor configuration. In add…
In this study, we investigated the gate voltage dependence of $T_{\mathrm c}$ in electrochemically etched FeSe films with an electric-double layer transistor structure. The $T_{\mathrm c}^{\mathrm {zero}}$ value of the etched FeSe films with a lower gate voltage ($V_{\mathrm g}$ = 2.5 and 3.3 V) reaches 46 K, which is the highest value among almost all reported values from the resistivity measurements except for the data by Ge et al. This enhanced $T_{\mathrm c}$ remains unchanged even after the discharge process, unlike the results for electrostatic doping without an etching process. Our resu…
We have successfully synthesized FeSe films by the electrochemical deposition in the electrolyte containing FeCl_{2}\cdot4H_{2}O, SeO_{2} and Na_{2}SO_{4}. The composition ratio of Fe and Se was controlled by the synthesis voltage and pH value. The FeSe film with the composition ratio of Fe : Se = 1 : 1 is fabricated at a voltage of -0.9 V and pH 2.1 in our electrochemical deposition. This sample has a highly crystalline tetragonal FeSe structure and exhibits a superconducting transition at 8.1 K, comparable to FeSe synthesized by other methods.
The iron-based superconductor FeSe offers a unique possibility to study the interplay of superconductivity with purely nematic as well magnetic-nematic order by pressure (p) tuning. By measuring specific heat under p up to 2.36GPa, we study the multiple phases in FeSe using a thermodynamic probe. We conclude that superconductivity is bulk across the entire p range and competes with magnetism. Our analysis suggests that superconducting and magnetic fluctuations exist over a wide temperature range above the respective bulk transition temperatures, whenever magnetism is present. These observation…
Here we establish a combined electronic phase diagram of isoelectronic FeSe1-xSx (0.19 > x > 0.0) and FeSe1-yTey (0.04 < y < 1.0) single crystals. The FeSe1-yTey crystals with y = 0.04 - 0.30 are grown by a hydrothermal ion-deintercalation (HID) method. Based on combined experiments of the specific heat, electrical transport, and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, no signature of the tetragonal-symmetry-broken transition to orthorhombic (nematic) phase is observed in the HID FeSe1-yTey samples, as compared with the FeSe1-xSx samples showing this transition at Ts. A ubiquitous dip-like …
We present the results of paramagnetic LDA band structure calculations: band dispersions, densities of states and Fermi surfaces, for the new iron based high-temperature superconductor LiOHFeSe. Main structural motif providing bands in the vicinity of the Fermi level is FeSe layer which is isostructural to the bulk FeSe prototype superconductor. The bands crossing the Fermi level and Fermi surfaces of the new compound are typical for other iron based superconductors. Experimentally it was shown that introduction of Fe ions into LiOH layer gives rise to ferromagnetic ordering of the Fe ions at …
We report the superconductivity at above 30 K in a new FeSe-layer compound K0.8Fe2Se2 (nominal composition) achieved by metal K intercalating in between FeSe layers. It is isostructural to BaFe2As2 and possesses the highest Tc for FeSe-layer materials so far under ambient pressure. Hall effect indicates the carriers are dominated by electron in this superconductor. We confirm that the observed superconductivity at above 30 K is due to this new FeSe-based 122 phase. Our results demonstrate that FeSe-layer materials are really remarkable superconductors via structure and carrier modulation.
Recent superconducting transition temperatures (Tc) over 100 K for monolayer FeSe on SrTiO3 have renewed interest in the bulk parent compound. In KCl:AlCl3 flux-transport-grown crystals of FeSe0.94Be0.06, FeSe0.97Be0.03 and, for comparison, FeSe, this work reports doping of FeSe using Be, among the smallest of possible dopants, corresponding to an effective chemical pressure. According to lattice parameter measurements, 6% Be doping shrank the tetragonal FeSe lattice equivalent to a physical pressure of 0.75 GPa. Using this flux-transport method of sample preparation, 6% of Be was the maximum …
The electronic structure of the iron chalcogenide superconductor FeSe_{1-x} was investigated by high- resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). The results were compared to DFT calculations showing some significant differences between the experimental electronic structure of FeSe_{1-x}, DFT calculations and existing data on FeSe_{x}Te_{1-x}. The bands undergo a pronounced orbital dependent renormalization, different from what was observed for FeSe_{x}Te_{1-x} and any other pnictides.
We report on the synthesis of large single crystals of a new FeSe-layer superconductor Cs0.8(FeSe0.98)2. X-ray powder diffraction, neutron powder-diffraction and magnetization measurements have been used to compare the crystal structure and the magnetic properties of Cs0.8(FeSe0.98)2 with those of the recently discovered potassium intercalated system KxFe2Se2. The new compound Cs0.8(FeSe0.98)2 shows a slightly lower superconducting transition temperature (Tc=27.4 K) in comparison to 29.5 in K0.8(FeSe0.98)2). The volume of the crystal unit cell increases by replacing K by Cs - the c-parameter g…
The importance of electron-hole interband interactions is widely acknowledged for iron-pnictide superconductors with high transition temperatures (Tc). However, high-Tc superconductivity without hole carriers has been suggested in FeSe single-layer films and intercalated iron-selenides, raising a fundamental question whether iron pnictides and chalcogenides have different pairing mechanisms. Here, we study the properties of electronic structure in the high-Tc phase induced by pressure in bulk FeSe from magneto-transport measurements and first-principles calculations. With increasing pressure, …
The high upper critical field characteristic of the recently discovered iron-based superconducting chalcogenides opens the possibility of developing a new type of non-oxide high-field superconducting wires. In this work, we utilize a buffered metal template on which we grow a textured FeSe$_{0.5}$Te$_{0.5}$ layer, an approach developed originally for high temperature superconducting coated conductors. These tapes carry high critical current densities (>1$\times10^{4}$A/cm$^{2}$) at about 4.2K under magnetic field as high as 25 T, which are nearly isotropic to the field direction. This demonstr…
The Fe isotope effect (Fe-IE) on the transition temperature T_c and the crystal structure was studied in the Fe chalcogenide superconductor FeSe_1-x by means of magnetization and neutron powder diffraction (NPD). The substitution of natural Fe (containing \simeq 92% of ^{56}Fe) by its lighter ^{54}Fe isotope leads to a shift of T_c of 0.22(5)K corresponding to an Fe-IE exponent of α_Fe=0.81(15). Simultaneously, a small structural change with isotope substitution is observed by NDP which may contribute to the total Fe isotope shift of T_c.
We demonstrate that the differential conductance, $dI/dV$, measured via spectroscopic imaging scanning tunneling microscopy in the doped iron chalcogenide FeSe$_{0.45}$Te$_{0.55}$, possesses a series of characteristic features that allow one to extract the orbital structure of the superconducting gaps. This yields nearly isotropic superconducting gaps on the two hole-like Fermi surfaces, and a strongly anisotropic gap on the electron-like Fermi surface. Moreover, we show that the pinning of nematic fluctuations by defects can give rise to a dumbbell-like spatial structure of the induced impuri…
Superconducting FeSe films were electrochemically deposited on rolling-assisted biaxially textured substrate (RABiTS) tape. We observed zero resistivity in the as-electrodeposited FeSe film prepared on the RABiTS when the appropriate voltage was applied while it was dipped into the solution. When the RABiTS tape was dipped in the solution without applying voltage, a thin Se film was deposited on the substrate. The compositional ratio of the FeSe film got closer to the stoichiometric ratio with decreasing the dipping time before applying voltage.
We report on the local electronic structure of oxygen incorporated FeTe and FeSe films and how this relates to superconductivity observed in these films. In the case of FeTe, intially grown films are measured to be non-superconducting, but become superconducting following oxygen incorporation. In FeSe the opposite happens, initially grown films are measured to be superconducting, but experience a quenching of superconductivity following oxygen incorporation. Total Fluorescence Yield (TFY) X-ray absorption experiments show that oxygen incorporation changes the initial Fe valence state in both t…
Our study of FeSe$ _ {1-x}$Te$ _ {x}$ crystals with x $<$ 0.15 shows that the phase separation in these compositions occurs into phases with a different stoichiometry of iron. This phase separation may indicate structural instability of the iron plane in the studied range of compositions. To explain it, we discuss the bond polarity and the peculiarity of the direct $d$ exchange in the iron plane in the framework of the basic phenomenological description such as the Bethe-Slater curve. With this approach, when the distance between iron atoms is close to the value at which the sign of the magnet…
Superconducting FeSe0.8Te0.2 thin films on SrTiO3, LaAlO3 and CaF2 substrates were electrochemically etched in an ionic liquid DEME-TFSI electrolyte with a gate bias of 5 V. Superconductivity at 38 K was commonly observed on all substrates after etching the films with a thickness above 30 nm, in spite of different Tc of 8 K, 12 K and 19 K before the etching on SrTiO3, LaAlO3 and CaF2 substrates, respectively. Tc returned to the original value by removing the gate bias. The Tc enhancement on the thick film indicates no relationship between the Tc enhancement and any interface effects between th…
We report on muon-spin rotation/relaxation (\muSR), electrical resistivity, magnetization and differential scanning calorimetry measurements performed on a high-quality single crystal of Cs_0.8(FeSe_0.98)_2. Whereas our transport and magnetization data confirm the bulk character of the superconducting state below T_c = 28.5(2)K, the \muSR data indicate that the system is {\it magnetic} below T_N = 478.5(3)K, where a first-order transition occurs. The first-order character of the magnetic transition is confirmed by differential scanning calorimetry data. Taken all together, these data indicate …
The field and temperature dependencies of the longitudinal and Hall resistivity have been studied for high-quality FeSe${}_{1-x}$S${}_{x}$ (x up to 0.14) single crystals. Quasiclassical analysis of the obtained data indicates a strong variation of the electron and hole concentrations under the studied isovalent substitution and proximity of FeSe to the point of the majority carrier-type inversion. On this basis, we propose a `doped semimetal' scheme for the superconducting phase diagram of the FeSe family, which can be applied to other iron-based superconductors. In this scheme, the two local …
Tetragonal iron selenide, FeSe, the layered parent compound of the recently discovered superconducting arsenide family, has previously been shown to be non magnetic and superconducting with a critical temperature near 8 K. There has, however, been a lack of consensus as to whether selenium vacancies present due to large deviations from ideal stoichiometry are required to give rise to the superconductivity. Here we describe the results of experiments that demonstrate simply that superconducting iron selenide can only be synthesized as a pure material when near stoichiometric (i.e. FeSe). Signif…
The field and temperature dependencies of the longitudinal and Hall resistivity have been measured for FeSe${}_{1-x}$S${}_{x}$ (x=0.04, 0.09 and 0.19) single crystals. The sample FeSe${}_{0.81}$S${}_{0.19}$ does not show a transition to an orthorhombic phase and exhibits at low temperatures the transport properties quite different from those of orthorhombic samples. The behavior of FeSe${}_{0.81}$S${}_{0.19}$ is well described by the simple two band model with comparable values of hole and electron mobility. In particular, at low temperatures the transverse resistance shows a linear field depe…
Iron selenide (FeSe) is an iron-based superconductor which shows unique properties, including strongly anisotropic superconducting gap, paramagnetism in undoped compound and extremely small Fermi pocket size. In this work, we demonstrate that the sizes of electron and hole pockets in FeSe monolayer become much smaller than those in bulk. The Fermi energy is in the order of a few meV and can be fine-tuned by the thickness of graphene layers underneath. Despite the low carrier density, the FeSe monolayers grown on trilayer or multi-layer graphene are superconducting. The superconducting gap size…
The successful fabrication of one monolayer FeSe on SrTiO$_{3}$ represented a real breakthrough in searching for high-T$_{c}$ Fe-based superconductors (Ref. 1). Motivated by this important discovery, we studied the effects of tensile strain on one monolayer and bulk iron-chalcogenide superconductors (FeSe and FeTe), showing that it produces important magnetic and electronic changes in the systems. We found that the magnetic ground state of bulk and monolayer FeSe is the block-checkerboard phase, which turns into the collinear stripe phase under in plane tensile strain. FeTe, in both bulk and m…
The influence of various strains on crystal and electronic structures of superconducting FeSe has been studied ab initio. We consider changes in the Fermi surface nesting with a vector Q=(0.5,0.5)*(2π/a) as crucial for rising superconductivity (SC) mediated by spin-fluctuations (SF). Our results indicate that the c-axis strained FeSe exhibits the most imperfect nesting, which enhances SF and, hence, also SC. In turn, the ab-plane compressive strain slightly weakens this} nesting while the tensile strain destroys it completely. These findings are consistent with reported earlier experimental de…
We present a combined analysis of neutron scattering and photoemission measurements on superconducting FeSe(0.5)Te(0.5). The low-energy magnetic excitations disperse only in the direction transverse to the characteristic wave vector (1/2,0,0), whereas the electronic Fermi surface near (1/2,0,0) appears to consist of four incommensurate pockets. While the spin resonance occurs at an incommensurate wave vector compatible with nesting, neither spin-wave nor Fermi-surface-nesting models can describe the magnetic dispersion. We propose that a coupling of spin and orbital correlations is key to expl…
Thin film growth of iron chalcogenides by pulsed laser deposition (PLD) is still a delicate issue in terms of simultaneous control of stoichiometry, texture, substrate/film interface properties, and superconducting properties. The high volatility of the constituents sharply limits optimal deposition temperatures to a narrow window and mainly challenges reproducibility for vacuum based methods. In this work we demonstrate the beneficial introduction of a semiconducting FeSe$_{1\text{--}x}$Te$_x$ seed layer for subsequent homoepitaxial growth of superconducting FeSe$_{1\text{--}x}$Te$_x$ thin fi…
Superconductivity with zero resistance transition temperature (Tc) up to 8.4 K and 8.3 K can be obtained by doping cobalt and sodium in alfa-FeSe with the nominal composition of Fe0.92Co0.08Se and Na0.1FeSe, respectively. The electrical resistivity and AC magnetic susceptibility of the prepared samples, measured with physical property measurement system (PPMS), unambiguously consistent with each other to indicate that the samples are superconductive. The respective doping mechanisms for cobalt and sodium into the parent alfa-FeSe are the Fe-site substitution and the interlayer insertion. It is…
Iron-based superconductors are well known for their complex interplay between structure, magnetism and superconductivity. FeSe offers a particularly fascinating example. This material has been intensely discussed because of its extended nematic phase, whose relationship with magnetism is not obvious. Superconductivity in FeSe is highly tunable, with the superconducting transition temperature, $T_\mathrm{c}$, ranging from 8 K in bulk single crystals at ambient pressure to almost 40 K under pressure or in intercalated systems, and to even higher temperatures in thin films. In this topical review…
Thermal conductivity measurements in magnetic fields have been carried out for FeSe$_{0.3}$Te$_{0.7}$ single crystals as-grown and annealed at 400 {\degree}C for 100 h in vacuum ($\sim$ 10$^{-4}$ Pa). It has been found that the thermal conductivity in the {\it ab}-plane, {\kab}, of the annealed crystal shows an enhancement at low temperatures just below the superconducting transition temperature, {\tc}, owing to the thermal conductivity due to quasiparticles, while {\kab} of the as-grown crystal does not. This suggests that FeSe$_{1-x}$Te$_{x}$ is a strongly correlated electron system. It has …
Tetragonal beta-FeSe obtained by hydrothermal reaction is not superconducting and transforms to a triclinic structure at 60 K unlike superconducting FeSe from solid state synthesis, which becomes orthorhombic at 90 K. In contrast, tetragonal iron sulphide FeS from hydrothermal synthesis is superconducting at 4.8 K but undergoes no structural transition. Our results suggest that the absence of superconductivity in hydrothermally synthesized FeSe may be associated to the low-temperature structure with zigzag chains of iron atoms, which is different from the known orthorhombic Cmme structure of s…
We report the first-principles study of superconducting critical temperature and superconducting properties of Fe-based superconductors taking into account on the same footing phonon, charge and spin-fluctuation mediated Cooper pairing. We show that in FeSe this leads to a modulated s$\pm$ gap symmetry, and that the antiferromagnetic paramagnons are the leading mechanism for superconductivity in FeSe, overcoming the strong repulsive effect of both phonons and charge pairing.
Mechanism of unconventional superconductivity in FeSe has been intensely scrutinized recently because of a variety of exotic properties unprecedented for other iron-based superconductors. A central unanswered question concerns the origin of the interaction that causes the nematic transition at $T_s=90\,K$ without accompanying magnetic order. Elucidating the nature of spin excitations in the normal state is a key to addressing this issue. Here we report, from inelastic neutron-scattering measurements in FeSe single crystals, that high-energy spin excitation spectra of FeSe exhibit characteristi…
Recent experiment reported the evidence of dispersing one-dimensional Majorana mode trapped by the crystalline domain walls in FeSe$_{0.45}$Te$_{0.55}$. Here, we perform the first-principles calculations to show that iron atoms in the domain wall spontaneously form the ferromagnetic order in line with orientation of the wall. The ferromagnetism can impose a $π$ phase difference between the domain-wall-separated surface superconducting regimes under the appropriate width and magnetization of the wall. Accordingly, the topological surface superconducting state of FeSe$_{0.45}$Te$_{0.55}$ can giv…
Superconducting FeSe has been investigated by measurements of the magnetic susceptibility versus temperature and Moessbauer spectroscopy at various temperatures including strong external magnetic fields applied to the absorber. It was found that isomer shift exhibits sharply defined increase at about 105 K leading to the lowering of the electron density on iron nucleus by 0.02 electron/a.u.^3. Above jump in the electron density is correlated with the transition from the P4/nmm to the Cmma structure, while decreasing temperature. Moessbauer measurements in the external magnetic field and for te…
The emergence of nematic electronic states accompanied by a structural phase transition is a recurring theme in many correlated electron materials, including the high-temperature copper oxide- and iron-based superconductors. We provide evidence for nematic electronic states in the iron-chalcogenide superconductor FeSe0.4Te0.6 from quasi-particle scattering detected in spectroscopic maps. The symmetry-breaking states persist above Tc into the normal state. We interpret the scattering patterns by comparison with quasi-particle interference patterns obtained from a tight-binding model, accounting…
We prepare single layer potassium-doped iron selenide (110) film by molecular beam expitaxy. Such a single layer film can be viewed as a two-dimensional system composed of weakly coupled two-leg iron ladders. Scanning tunneling spectroscopy reveals that superconductivity is developed in this two-leg ladder system. The superconducting gap is similar to that of the multi-layer films. However, the Fermi surface topology given by first-principles calculation is remarkably different from that of the bulk materials. Our results suggest that superconducting pairing is very short-ranged or takes place…
Electronic correlations were long suggested not only to be responsible for the complexity of many novel materials, but also to form essential prerequisites for their intriguing properties. Electronic behavior of iron-based superconductors is far from conventional, while the reason for that is not yet understood. Here we present a combined study of the electronic spectrum in the iron-based superconductor FeSe by means of angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and dynamical mean field theory (DMFT). Both methods in unison reveal strong deviations of the spectrum from single-electron a…
Tetragonal FeSe is a superconductor with a transition temperature Tc of 8 K and shows a huge enhancement of Tc with applying pressure. Tetragonal FeTe has a structure very analogous to superconducting FeSe, but does not show superconducting transition. We investigated the pressure effect of resistivity on FeTe. The resistivity at room temperature decreased with increasing pressure. An anomaly in resistivity around 80 K shifted towards a lower temperature with increasing pressure.
The in-plane thermal conductivity $κ$ of the iron selenide superconductor FeSe$_x$ ($T_c$ = 8.8 K) were measured down to 120 mK and up to 14.5 T ($\simeq 3/4 H_{c2}$). In zero field, the residual linear term $κ_0/T$ at $ T \to 0$ is only about 16 $μ$W K$^{-2}$ cm$^{-1}$, less than 4% of its normal state value. Such a small $κ_0/T$ does not support the existence of nodes in the superconducting gap. More importantly, the field dependence of $κ_0/T$ in FeSe$_x$ is very similar to that in NbSe$_2$, a typical multi-gap s-wave superconductor. We consider our data as strong evidence for multi-gap nod…
The thermal conductivity of the iron-based superconductor FeSe was measured at temperatures down to 50 mK in magnetic fields up to 17 T. In zero magnetic field, the electronic residual linear term in the T = 0 limit, κ_0/T, is vanishingly small. Application of a magnetic field H causes no increase in κ_0/T initially. Those two observations show that there are no zero-energy quasiparticles that carry heat and therefore no nodes in the superconducting gap of FeSe. The full field dependence of κ_0/T has the classic shape of a two-band superconductor, such as MgB2: it rises exponentially at very l…
A complete phase diagram and its corresponding physical properties are essential prerequisites to understand the underlying mechanism of iron based superconductivity. For the structurally simplest 11 (FeSeTe) system, earlier attempts using bulk samples have not been able to do so due to the fabrication difficulties. Here, thin FeSexTe1-x films with the Se content covering the full range were fabricated by using pulsed laser deposition method. Crystal structure analysis shows that all films retain the tetragonal structure in room temperature. Significantly, the highest superconducting transitio…
We review our recent experimental results on the electronic nematic phase in electron- and hole-doped BaFe$_2$As$_2$ and FeSe. The nematic susceptibility is extracted from shear-modulus data (obtained using a three-point-bending method in a capacitance dilatometer) using Landau theory and is compared to the nematic susceptibility obtained from elastoresistivity and Raman data. FeSe is particularly interesting in this context, because of a large nematic, i.e., a structurally distorted but paramagnetic, region in its phase diagram. Scaling of the nematic susceptibility with the spin lattice rela…
The discovery of superconductivity in alkali-ammonia co-intercalated FeSe has generated intensive interest because of their highest Tc (~ 45 K) among iron-chalcogenide superconductors with bulk form. Here, we report the phase diagrams of two series of Li/Na-ammonia co-intercalated FeSe1-zTez. When superconductivity is suppressed by Te doping, the magnetic ordering states are emergent. Moreover, a novel phase Lix(NH3)yFe2-δTe2 with possible antiferromagnetism is discovered. This strongly indicates the intimate relation between superconductivity and magnetism in these materials, like in other ir…
Intercalation of organic cations in superconducting iron selenide can significantly increase the critical temperature (Tc). We present an electrochemical method using beta-FeSe crystals (Tc ~ 8 K) floating on a mercury cathode to intercalate tetramethylammonium ions (TMA+) quantitatively to obtain bulk samples of (TMA)0.5Fe2Se2 with Tc = 43 K. The layered crystal structure is closely related to the ThCr2Si2-type with disordered TMA+ ions between the FeSe layers. Although the organic ions are not detectable by X-ray diffraction, packing requirements as well as first principle DFT calculations c…
We perform in-plane optical spectroscopy measurement on (00l) FeSe thin-film grown on SrTiO$_3$ substrate by pulsed laser deposition method. The study indicates that the low frequency conductivity consists of two Drude components, a broad one which takes up most of the spectral weight and a very narrow one roughly below 100-150 \cm. The narrow Drude component locates at so low frequencies that no such behavior was observed in iron pnictides. The overall plasma frequency is found to be smaller than the FeAs based compounds, suggesting a stronger correlation effect. Similar to iron pnictides, a …
The FeSe nematic phase has been the focus of recent research on iron based superconductors (IBSs) due to its unique properties. A number of electronic structure studies were performed to find the origin of the phase. However, such attempts came out with conflicting results and caused additional controversies. Here, we report results from angle resolved photoemission and X-ray absorption spectroscopy studies on FeSe with detwinning by a piezo stack. We have fully resolved band dispersions with orbital characters near the Brillouin zone corner which reveals absence of a Fermi pocket at the Y poi…
The iron chalcogenides FeSe and FeS are superconductors composed of two-dimensional sheets held together by van der Waals interactions, which makes them prime candidates for the intercalation of various guest species. We review the intercalation chemistry of FeSe and FeS superconductors and discuss their synthesis, structure, and physical properties. Before we review the latest work in this area, we provide a brief background on the intercalation chemistry of other inorganic materials that exhibit enhanced superconducting properties upon intercalation, which include the transition metal dichal…
Single monolayer FeSe film grown on Nb-doped SrTiO$_3$(001) substrate shows the highest superconducting transition temperature (T$_C$ $\sim$ 100 K) among the iron-based superconductors (iron-pnictide), while T$_C$ of bulk FeSe is only $\sim$ 8 K. Antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations were believed to be crucial in iron-pnictides, which has inspired several proposals to understand the FeSe/SrTiO$_3$ system. Although bulk FeSe does not show the antiferromagnetic order, calculations suggest that the parent FeSe/SrTiO$_3$ films are AFM. Experimentally, due to lacking of direct probe, the magnetic st…
The influence of tensile strain in the ab-plane on crystal and electronic structure of FeTe has been studied ab initio. In superconducting FeSe the Fermi surface nesting with a vector q~(0.5,0.5)(2π/a) is believed to be crucial for rising superconductivity mediated by spin-fluctuations. The results presented here indicate that tensile-strained FeTe also exhibits such conditions. Furthermore, the Fermi surface changes, related to the increase of the lattice parameter a of this telluride, are opposite to analogous effects reported for FeSe. Since a recently reported transition from the double-st…
The discoveries of iron-based superconductors with relatively high transition temperature are under intense experimental and theoretical investigation. Here we present magnetotransport measurements on FeSe superconductor under hydrostatic pressure. We show that in Fe-deficient tetragonal FeSe binary compound, the onset of superconducting transition is almost doubled under 1.98GPa pressure and the estimated upper critical field of 26.7Tesla is increased to 47.5Tesla.
We report the crystal structure, superconductivity and normal state properties of two iron-based materials, Li0.15(C3H10N2)0.32FeSe(P-4) and Lix(C3H10N2)0.32FeSe(P4/nmm, 0.25<x<0.4) with superconducting transition temperature from 40~46K. The determined crystal structures revealed a coupling between Li concentration and the oritation of 1,2-Diaminopropane molecules within the hyper expanded FeSe layers. Further fitting on resistivity in terms of the Lawence-Doniach model suggests the two superconductors belong to the quasi-two dimonsional system. With increasing temperature, a differences in c…
It is known that iron selenide superconductors exhibit unique characteristics distinct from iron pnicitides, especially in the electron-doped region. However, acomprehensive study of continuous carrier doping ang the corresponding crystal structures of FeSe is still lacking, mainly due to the difficulties in controlling the carrier density in bulk materials. Here, we report the successful synthesis of a new family of bulk Lix(C3H10N2)0.37FeSe, which features a continue superconducting dome harboring Lifshitz transition within the wide range of 0.06~0.68. We demonstrate that with electron-doped…
The recent discovery of high temperature superconductivity in a layered iron arsenide has led to an intensive search to optimize the superconducting properties of iron-based superconductors by changing the chemical composition of the spacer layer that is inserted between adjacent anionic iron arsenide layers. Until now, superconductivity has only been found in compounds with a cationic spacer layer consisting of metal ions: Li+, Na+, K+, Ba2+ or a PbO-type or perovskite-type oxide layer. Electronic doping is usually necessary to control the fine balance between antiferromagnetism and supercond…
