Tetragonal iron selenide, FeSe, the layered parent compound of the recently discovered superconducting arsenide family, has previously been shown to be non magnetic and superconducting with a critical temperature near 8 K. There has, however, been a lack of consensus as to whether selenium vacancies present due to large deviations from ideal stoichiometry are required to give rise to the superconductivity. Here we describe the results of experiments that demonstrate simply that superconducting iron selenide can only be synthesized as a pure material when near stoichiometric (i.e. FeSe). Significant selenium deficiency or excess gives rise to secondary magnetic phases, and a suppression of the superconductivity.
Synthesis of monolayer FeSe on SrTiO3, with greatly enhanced superconductivity compared to bulk FeSe, remains difficult. Lengthy annealing within a certain temperature window is always required to achieve superconducting samples as reported by different groups around the world, but the mechanism of annealing in inducing superconductivity has not been elucidated. We grow FeSe films on SrTiO3 by molecular beam epitaxy and adjust the stoichiometry by depositing additional small amounts of Fe atoms. The monolayer films become superconducting after the Fe deposition without any annealing, and show …
There are several FeSe based superconductors, including the bulk FeSe, monolayer FeSe thin film, intercalated KxFe2-ySe2 and Li1-xFexOHFeSe, etc. Their normal states all show metallic behavior. The key player here is the FeSe layer which exhibits the highest superconducting transition temperature in the form of monolayer thin film. Recently a new FeSe based compound, CsFe4-xSe4 with the space group of Bmmm was found. Interestingly the system shows a strong insulator-like behavior although it shares the same FeSe planes as other relatives. Density functional theory calculations indicate that it…
Cryogenic scanning tunneling microscopy is employed to investigate the stoichiometry and defects of epitaxial FeSe thin films on SrTiO3(001) substrates under various post-growth annealing conditions. Low-temperature annealing with an excess supply of Se leads to formation of Fe vacancies and superstructures, accompanied by a superconductivity (metal)-to-insulator transition in FeSe films. By contrast, high-temperature annealing could eliminate the Fe vacancies and superstructures, and thus recover the high-temperature superconducting phase of monolayer FeSe films. We also observe multilayer Fe…
The tetragonal FeSe phase is an intensively investigated iron based superconductor. In this study we examined the influence of Ag addition on the superconducting properties of selenium deficient polycrystalline FeSe0.94. The samples were obtained by solid state reaction and melting methods. XRD analysis shows the presence of tetragonal phase and EDX analysis establishes inhomogeneous Ag distribution in the grains. The superconducting properties were investigated by fundamental and third harmonic AC magnetic susceptibility. The intergranular critical current determined from AC magnetic suscepti…
We report on an apparent low-energy nanoscale electronic inhomogeneity in FeSe$_{0.4}$Te$_{0.6}$ due to the distribution of selenium and tellurium atoms revealed through unsupervised machine learning. Through an unsupervised clustering algorithm, characteristic spectra of selenium- and tellurium-rich regions are identified. The inhomogeneity linked to these spectra can clearly be traced in the differential conductance and is detected both at energy scales of a few electron volts as well as within a few millielectronvolts of the Fermi energy. By comparison with ARPES, this inhomogeneity can be …
Synthesis, electrical and magnetic characterization of superconducting FeSe0.85 compound is reported. An anomaly in the magnetization against temperature around 90K is observed. Magnetic characterization of a commercial compound with nominal FeSe stoichiometry is also presented. The overall magnetic behaviors as well as the magnetic anomaly in both compounds are discussed in terms of magnetic impurities and secondary phases. Keyword: A. Superconductors
We have performed density functional theory (DFT) calculations using the linearized augmented plane wave method (LAPW) with the local density approximation (LDA) functional to study the electronic structure of the iron-based superconductor Iron-Selenium (FeSe). In our study, we have performed a comprehensive set of calculations involving structural, atomic, and spin configurations. All calculations were executed using the tetragonal lead-oxide or P4/nmm structure, with various volumes, c/a ratios and internal parameters. Furthermore, we investigated the spin polarization using the LDA function…
The recently discovered iron arsenide superconductors, which display superconducting transition temperatures as high as 55 K, appear to share a number of general features with high-Tc cuprates, including proximity to a magnetically ordered state and robustness of the superconductivity in the presence of disorder. Here we show that superconductivity in Fe1+dSe, the parent compound of the superconducting arsenide family, is destroyed by very small changes in stoichiometry. Further, we show that non-superconducting Fe1+dSe is not magnetically ordered down to low temperatures. These results sugges…
We report on a comparative study of the crystal structure and the magnetic properties of FeSe1-x (x= 0.00 - 0.15) superconducting samples by neutron powder diffraction and magnetization measurements. The samples were synthesized by two different methods: a 'low-temperature' one using powders as a starting material at T =700 C and a "high-temperature' method using solid pieces of Fe and Se at T= 1070 C. The effect of a starting (nominal) stoichiometry on the phase purity of the obtained samples, the superconducting transition temperature Tc, as well as the chemical instability of FeSe1-x at amb…
Our study of FeSe$ _ {1-x}$Te$ _ {x}$ crystals with x $<$ 0.15 shows that the phase separation in these compositions occurs into phases with a different stoichiometry of iron. This phase separation may indicate structural instability of the iron plane in the studied range of compositions. To explain it, we discuss the bond polarity and the peculiarity of the direct $d$ exchange in the iron plane in the framework of the basic phenomenological description such as the Bethe-Slater curve. With this approach, when the distance between iron atoms is close to the value at which the sign of the magnet…
Since the discovery of high-temperature superconductivity in the thin-film FeSe/SrTiO$_3$ system, iron selenide and its derivates have been intensively scrutinized. Using ab initio density functional theory calculations we review the electronic structures that could be realized in iron-selenide if the structural parameters could be tuned at liberty. We calculate the momentum-dependence of the susceptibility and investigate the symmetry of electron pairing within the random phase approximation. Both the susceptibility and the symmetry of electron pairing depend on the structural parameters in a…
Thin film growth of iron chalcogenides by pulsed laser deposition (PLD) is still a delicate issue in terms of simultaneous control of stoichiometry, texture, substrate/film interface properties, and superconducting properties. The high volatility of the constituents sharply limits optimal deposition temperatures to a narrow window and mainly challenges reproducibility for vacuum based methods. In this work we demonstrate the beneficial introduction of a semiconducting FeSe$_{1\text{--}x}$Te$_x$ seed layer for subsequent homoepitaxial growth of superconducting FeSe$_{1\text{--}x}$Te$_x$ thin fi…
We synthesized tetragonal alpha-FeSe by melting a powder mixture of iron and selenium at high pressure. Subsequent annealing at normal pressure results in removing traces of hexagonal beta- FeSe, formation of a rather sharp transition to superconducting state at Tc ~ 7 K, and the appearance of a magnetic transition near Tm = 120 K. Resistivity and ac-susceptibility were measured on the annealed sample at hydrostatic pressure up to 4.5 GPa. A magnetic transition visible in ac-susceptibility shifts down under pressure and the resistive anomaly typical for a spin density wave (SDW) antiferromagne…
Iron-chalcogenide single crystals with the nominal composition FeSe$_{0.5}$Te$_{0.5}$ and a transition temperature of $T_{c}\simeq14.6$ K were synthesized by the Bridgman method. The structural and anisotropic superconducting properties of those crystals were investigated by means of single crystal X-ray and neutron powder diffraction, SQUID and torque magnetometry, and muon-spin rotation. Room temperature neutron powder diffraction reveals that 95% of the crystal volume is of the same tetragonal structure as PbO. The structure refinement yields a stoichiometry of Fe_1.045Se_0.406Te_0.594. Add…
Stabilized FeSe thin films in ambient pressure with tunable superconductivity would be a promising candidate for superconducting electronic devices yet its superconducting transition temperature (Tc) is below 10 K in bulk materials. By carefully controlling the depositions on twelve kinds of substrates using pulsed laser deposition technique, high quality single crystalline FeSe samples were fabricated with full width of half maximum 0.515? in the rocking curve and clear four-fold symmetry in phi-scan from x-ray diractions. The films have a maximum Tc 15 K on the CaF2 substrate and do not show…
