In this article, we investigate the stochastic resonance (SR) effect in a finite array of noisy bistable systems with nearest-neighbor coupling driven by a weak time-periodic driving force. The array is characterized by a collective variable. By means of numerical simulations, the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and the gain are estimated as functions of the noise and the interaction coupling strength. A strong enhancement of the SR phenomenon for this collective variable in comparison with SR in single unit bistable systems is observed. Gains larger than unity are obtained for some parameter values and multi- frequency driving forces, indicating that the system is operating in a non-linear regime albeit the smallness of the driving amplitude. The large SNR values observed are basically due to the fact that the output fluctuations are small and short lived, in comparison with their typical values in a linear regime. A non-monotonic behavior of the SNR with the coupling strength is also obtained.
Energy harvesting of ambient vibrations using a combination of a mechanical structure (oscillator) and an electrical transducer has become a valuable technique for powering small wireless sensors. Bistable mechanical oscillators have recently attracted the attention of researchers as they can be used to harvest energy within a wider band of frequencies. In this manuscript, the response of a bistable harvester to different forms of ambient vibration is analysed. In particular, harmonic noise, which has a narrow spectrum, similarly to harmonic signals, yet is stochastic, like broad-spectrum whit…
The occurrence of stochastic resonance in bistable systems undergoing anomalous diffusions, which arise from density-dependent fluctuations, is investigated with emphasis on the analytical formulation of the problem as well as a possible analytical derivation of key quantifiers of stochastic resonance. The nonlinear Fokker-Planck equation describing the system dynamics, together with the corresponding Ito-Langevin equation, are formulated. In the linear-response regime analytical expressions of the spectral amplification, of the signal-to-noise ratio and of the hysteresis loop area are derived…
We propose and experimentally demonstrate detecting small single-cycle and few-cycle signals by using the symmetric double-well potential of a radio frequency superconducting quantum interference device (rf-SQUID). We show that the response of this bistable system to single- and few-cycle signals has a non-monotonic dependence on the noise strength. The response, measured by the probability of transition from initial potential well to the opposite one, becomes maximum when the noise-induced transition rate between the two stable states of the rf-SQUID is comparable to the signal frequency. Com…
Stochastic Resonance in Periodic Potentials Revisited
Constriction-based Josephson weak-links display a thermal bi-stability between two states exhibiting zero and finite voltages. This manifests in experiments either as hysteresis in weak-links current voltage characteristics or as random telegraphic signal in voltage. In the latter case, a noise-driven amplification of a sinusoidal excitation of the device is observed, at frequencies matching the characteristic switching frequency in telegraphic signal, a phenomenon known as stochastic resonance. The observed behavior is understood using a two-state model of stochastic resonance and is exploite…
We study noise induced thermally activated barrier crossing of a Brownian particle that hops in a periodic ratchet potential where the ratchet potential is coupled with a spatially uniform temperature. The viscous friction is considered to decrease exponentially when the temperature $T$ of the medium increases as proposed originally by Reynolds. The results obtained in this work show that the mean first passage time of the particle is considerably lower when the viscous friction is temperature dependent than that of the case where the viscous friction is temperature independent. We then explor…

The inverse stochastic resonance (ISR) phenomenon consists in an unexpected depression in the response of a system under external noise, e.g., as observed in the behavior of the mean-firing rate in some pacemaker neurons in the presence of moderate values of noise. A possible requirement for such behavior is the existence of a bistable regime in the behavior of these neurons. We here explore theoretically the possible emergence of this behavior in a general bistable system, and conclude on conditions the potential function which drives the dynamics must accomplish. We show that such an intrigu…
